Earlier this year, City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) sponsored a bill to co-name the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Forest Parkway after Thomson, the executive director of the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation and the Woodhaven Business Improvement District who worked tirelessly for the past 40 years to promote and protect the interests of the mom-and-pop shops along Jamaica Avenue.

Thomson died in January.

NYFAC Board Calls for Internal Investigation of Autism Organization and CEO

By Michael V. Cusenza The board of directors of a Howard Beach-based autism advocacy agency has organized an internal investigation of the nonprofit and its chief executive officer.

The New York Families for Autistic Children board this week retained Jerry Solomon of Barclay Dennis, LLP, to head up the probe, according to the Queens Chronicle. Solomon subsequently contracted Madison Avenue accounting firm The Bonadio Group to assist with the inquiry.

Solomon has confirmed the internal investigation, but would not divulge its targets or scope. NYFAC founder, President and CEO Andrew Baumann has been temporarily relieved of his duties. The board of directors has tapped Steven Freeman as interim CEO. The investigation is expected to take a couple of weeks to complete.

At the outset, it seemed rumor mills were working overtime regarding the story.

“The FBI did not raid the place on Friday, there were no raids,” Solomon told the Queens Eagle. “No law enforcement agencies are involved, this is an internal investigation.”

A spokesman for the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney’s Office noted that the agency does not confirm nor deny the existence of investigations. State Attorney General Barbara Underwood, who vets all New York nonprofits, did not return a request for comment.

Solomon served for 25 years as a regional director for the State AG’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. His practice areas at Barclay Damon include: white collar crime, health care and human services, health care controversies, and commercial litigation.

According to its website, since 1998, NYFAC has been “motivating and inspiring individuals diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder — and their families — to live life to the fullest.” The organization has more than 150 employees and provides more than 20 different programs to its clients.

New FAA Legislation Directs Agency to Address Borough Aircraft Noise Concerns

Key provisions to address excessive aircraft noise concerns were included in the recently passed Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Bill, according to the New York elected officials who helped author those elements of the measure.

The legislation, which was signed into law by President Donald Trump on Friday, Oct. 5, includes U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s (D-N.Y.) provision to require the FAA to designate a regional ombudsman in each FAA region to serve as a point of contact with the public, including community groups, to address noise, pollution, and safety issues. It also includes a provision pushed by Gillibrand and Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing) to require the FAA to finalize its study into alternatives to the current 65 Day-Night Sound Level metric for measuring the impact of aircraft noise to people on the ground.

Additionally, the bill directs the agency to work with an institution of higher education in order to conduct a study on health risks to residents exposed to a range of noise levels from such flights.

State Urges New Yorkers to get Flu Shot

By Forum Staff Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday reminded all New Yorkers to get a flu shot during the upcoming flu season, which generally begins in October and runs through May. In encouraging Empire State residents to get vaccinated, Cuomo recalled last year’s heavy flu season in which there were 23,377 flu-related hospitalizations and six pediatric deaths in New York. Over the last four years, there have been a total of 25 pediatric flu deaths in the state.

Additionally this week, the State launched a public-service advertising campaign to further remind New Yorkers to get vaccinated. The State Department of Health, Office of Children and Family Services, State Office for the Aging and State Education Department will coordinate efforts to target educational materials to those most at risk, including children, pregnant woman and older adults. The State DOH is also providing access to flu educational materials that can be printed and posted to help raise awareness, Cuomo noted.

Earlier this year, the governor signed an emergency executive order allowing pharmacists to administer flu vaccines to children ages 2 to 18 during the 2018 flu season. tion codifying the order into law, meaning that now a pharmacist can administer the vaccine to any person age 2 or older. The governor urged New Yorkers to take advantage of the expanded access and get vaccinated.

“Getting a flu shot still remains the best way to stay healthy during this season,” the

governor said. “It is critical for all New Yorkers, especially older adults, young children and pregnant women, to get vaccinated as soon as possible and to take other necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus in New York.”

According to DOH, the flu can cause se-

vere illness. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may also have vomiting and diarrhea.

People infected with the flu may have respiratory symptoms without a fever. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people who are very sick or people who are sick and at high risk of serious flu complications be treated early with flu antiviral drugs. Antiviral drugs work best when started within two days of symptoms first appearing. There are currently no shortages of antiviral drugs, and manufacturers report they expect to meet projected seasonal demands.

Adults aged 65 years and older, people with certain chronic medical conditions, young children and pregnant women are among those at highest risk for serious flu complications, which may require hospitalization and result in death. Because the flu virus can spread through coughing or sneezing, it is especially important for family members and people who have regular contact with high-risk individuals to be vaccinated. In addition, all healthcare workers should be vaccinated against influenza to protect their health and the health of their patients.

DOJ Establishes Transnational Organized Crime Task Force Michael V. Cusenza The U.S. Department of Justice this week unveiled a series of measures aimed at dismantling gangs and cartels, including the formation of a Transnational Organized Crime Task Force.

According to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the panel will be led by the deputy AG and will be composed of experienced prosecutors. It will be organized into one subcommittee for each of the five target groups: Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13; Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion; the Sinaloa Cartel; Clan del Golfo; and Lebanese Hezbollah.

New York federal prosecutors are set to play key roles on the task force. The MS-13 subcommittee will be led by Assistant U.S. Attorney John Durham of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

The administration’s aggressive move against such international criminal cohorts began in February 2017, when President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing the federal government to “ensure that federal law enforcement agencies give a high priority and devote sufficient resources to efforts to identify, interdict, disrupt, and dis-

mantle transnational criminal organizations.”

Sessions subsequently directed the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force, and the DOJ Criminal Division to identify top transnational criminal groups “that threaten the safety and prosperity of the U.S. and its allies.” As a result of the review, Sessions designated the five aforementioned organizations as the top transnational crime threats.

Additionally, since taking office in January 2017, borough native Trump has visited Long Island twice to discuss law enforcement efforts regarding MS-13 and its threat to Nassau and Suffolk counties. On Oct. 23, 2017, Sessions formally designated MS-13 as a priority target for OCDETF. “The day I was sworn in as attorney general, President Trump sent me an executive order to dismantle transnational criminal organizations—the gangs and cartels who flood our streets with drugs and violence,” Sessions said on Monday. “We embrace that order and we carry it out every single day. Today, to increase our effectiveness, I am putting in place new leadership to drive our transnational organized crime efforts and forming a Transnational Organized Crime Task Force of experienced prosecutors that will coordinate and optimize the department’s efforts to take each of these groups off of our streets for good.”

By Michael V. Cusenza Bipartisan legislation to permanently reauthorize and finance the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund has been introduced in both chambers of Congress, the bills’ authors announced on Friday.

According to U.S. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Cory Gardner (R-CO), Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), and U.S. Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan), Jerrold Nadler (DBrooklyn and Manhattan), and Peter King (R-L.I.), the measure would ensure that Sept.

11 first responders who become sick with certified Sept. 11 illnesses in the future would be covered by the VCF program.

Earlier this month, VCF Special Master Rupa Bhattacharyya said that the repository that was created to provide compensation for anyone (or a personal representative of a deceased individual) who suffered physical harm or was killed as a result of the terrorist-related aircraft crashes of Sept.

11, 2001, or the debris removal efforts that took place in the immediate aftermath of those crashes, may run out of money prior to its end date of Dec. 18, 2020.

“Thousdands of firefighters, police officers, federal and local law enforcement officers, medical workers, construction workers, and other heroes risked their lives

for us after we were attacked on 9/11. They didn’t back down when we needed them, and now, as cancer rates in the 9/11 first responder community are higher than ever and the 9/11 death toll continues to rise 17 years after the attacks, Congress needs to stand up for them,” Gillibrand said.

“We simply cannot turn our backs on our 9/11 heroes and let the Victim Compensation Fund expire. I urge my colleagues to do the right thing, protect our heroes and their families, and pass this bipartisan bill to permanently reauthorize the VCF now.

Anything less would send a cruel message to our heroes and their families that Congress is shrugging their shoulders at their suffering. We can and must pass this vitally important bipartisan bill now.”

According to the special master, the VCF has expended more than $2.5 billion since its 2015 reauthorization; it has more than $3 billion in funding remaining with just under two-and-a-half years left to go.

“Nationwide, brave 9/11 responders and survivors put their lives on the line at Ground Zero. Because of their exposure to toxins they continue to fight serious illnesses. We have come too far and in order to ensure that our 9/11 heroes receive the very best medical care and treatment we must enlist political support from all regions and parties,” King added.

Miller Honors Richmond Hill Readers

Assemblyman Mike Miller recently presented State Excellence in Reading certificates to three students from PS 254 in Richmond Hill for accepting the elected official’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Miller sponsored the event in coordination with State libraries to inspire kids to read on a regular basis throughout the summer break. Many students throughout

the 38th Assembly District participated in the challenge and pledged to turn pages for at least 15 minutes each day for at least 40 days during the months of July and August.

EDITORIAL PLENTY OF ROOM Many of us have been looking forward to this time of year for the last three months; since that first bead of sweat inched down our faces in June we’ve been pining for pumpkin spice everything and foliage that seems only Gotham can do.

However, there are too many people across the five boroughs that see that first 62-degree day as a portent of the punishment just around the corner. The 60,000+ homeless New Yorkers know that the Big Apple’s unforgiving winter is just licking its chops, ready to pounce on the helpless in just a few weeks’ time.

This crisis will haunt this administration—and our beloved city—long after Mayor Bill de Blasio & Co. move on to the next office.

The latest bit of bad news comes hidden inside a New York Post report with the headline: “Buyers see bargains in oversaturated hotel biz.”

“New York City’s hotel-building boom has led to an oversupply of rooms,” the lede reads, “and enticing deals for aggressive acquirers who believe prices have finally hit a bottom.”

According to the Post’s story, in 2007, there were 73,692 hotel rooms

and 357 hotels. By 2017, that number jumped to 115,532 rooms and 632 hotels. Another 18,960 rooms will join the already oversaturated market by 2020, the tabloid groaned on Monday.

In Queens, hotels—boutique and chain—are popping up left and right— mostly left, as the Western swath of the World’s Borough seems to be bearing the brunt of the boom.

So, what do new hotels have to do

with the undomiciled? They are a portent of things to come.

In this city, today’s hotel is tomorrow’s shelter.

In February 2017, Hizzoner unveiled what he characterized at the time as a “comprehensive boroughbased plan to reduce the footprint of New York City’s homeless shelter system and drive down the population of homeless New Yorkers relying on

shelter.”

Titled “Turning the Tide on Homelessness, Neighborhood by Neighborhood,” the 114-page vision to address the homeless crisis outlines the timing and logistics of ending the use of 360 cluster sites and commercial hotel facilities. Replacing the sites will be 90 traditional shelters distributed across the five boroughs, de Blasio promised.

According to the administration, the new network will be able to more effectively house the homeless near the communities, jobs, school, houses of worship and support systems needed to help them get back on track.

With this plan, the mayor pledged to “completely eliminate the use of cluster apartment units by the end of 2021 and commercial hotel facilities by the end of 2023; reduce the current number of shelter sites by 45 percent.”

Since then, the homeless population has only increased. Before you know it, hotels-as-shelters will follow the same track. It’s as if we can see the end of the movie before the screenwriter has finished the final page of dialog.

The Post story is not about more hotels in the city—it’s about the shelters that are waiting around the corner.

Reputed MS-13 Members Charged in Summer Stabbing in Jamaica

By Forum Staff Two reputed members of the MS-13 street gang, both Jamaica residents have been charged with stabbing a teenage boy, back in August, in the shadows of the Long Island Railroad Station in Jamaica.

The defendants pummeled the victim before stabbing him multiple times in the back, torso and arm.

“The two defendants in this case are alleged to be members of the notorious MS-13 street gang. A young man, just a teenager, was viciously beaten and stabbed repeatedly and is lucky to be alive today. This kind of brutality is unacceptable in a civilized society and shows a disregard for human life,” said DA Richard Brown.

Dani Cruz, 25, of Princeton Street and Maxwell Martinez, 24, of 164 Street, both of Jamaica, were arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on a complaint charging them with second-degree attempted murder and first- and second-degree assault.

Cruz and Martinez each face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

proximately 10:25 p.m. on August 31, the defendants approached the unidentified victim in the vicinity of Sutphin Boulevard and 94th Avenue. The victim, a 17-year-old boy, was riding a bike when he was struck with an unknown object, causing him to fall off the bicycle.

The defendants then repeatedly punched and kicked the teenager.

They continued to beat the victim and then began stabbing him over and over in his back, torso and arm.

The teen was then taken to the hospital where he was treated for extensive nerve damage to his arm and had surgery.

Cruz and Martinez were spotted blocks from the scene of the stabbing at a bodega, located at 143-09 95th Ave., where they were arrested on unrelated charges. Cruz was inside the bodega and Martinez was in the rear of the location, attempting to gain access to the basement.

The defendants’ clothes and shoes were recovered and submitted to the Office of the Medical Examiner for DNA testing, where it was determined that the blood recovered from the defendants’ clothing and footwear were a match for the victim’s blood. Subsequently, both defendants were arrested for the stabbing of the 17-year-old victim.

Cruz stated at the time of his arrest that he “was in the deli the entire time. I never left,” but did admit to being a member of MS-13. Cruz allegedly added that he was “drinking and did not remember what happened that night.”

Martinez, also affirmed his affiliation with MS-13 and said “the blood on my pants are from cuts I have. I had one construction accident ... I did not stab anyone.”

Mara Salvatrucha (MS), also known as MS-13 (the 13 representing their affiliation to the Mexican mafia), is an international criminal gang that originated in Los Angeles, California, in the 1980s. Members of MS-13 are characterized by tattoos covering the body, including the face, and by the use of their own sign language. They are notorious for their violence and a sub- cultural moral code based on merciless retribution. Their wide-ranging activities have drawn the attention of the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who have initiated wide-scale raids against known and suspected gang members, arresting hundreds across the United States.

By Forum Staff A Far Rockaway man has pleaded guilty to his role in a crew of bandits that robbed four banks last year, according to federal prosecutors.

Leroy Scott, 28, recently copped to charges of armed bank robbery and firearms possession.

According to court documents, on Aug. 21, 2017, Scott acted as a lookout for fellow crew member Pedro Benitez, who entered the Bridgehampton Savings Bank in Hewlett, L.I., ordered customers and employees to the floor at gunpoint and demanded money from bank employees. Another crew member, Troy Tavares, waited outside in a vehicle. Benitez fled the bank with more than $12,000 and Tavares

In pleading guilty, Scott admitted that he had also participated in two additional robberies that the crew committed during the summer of 2017, both in Nassau County. In each of those robberies, Scott had assisted in the planning and acted as a lookout for Benitez.

In total, the robbery crew stole more than $70,000 from four banks between July and September of 2017.

Scott is the last crew member to plead guilty in the case. When sentenced, he faces up to 25 years’ imprisonment for the bank robbery charge and a minimum of seven years’ imprisonment for the firearms charge.

City Bringing New Pedestrian Lighting Treatments to Jamaica Avenue

New distinctive pedestrian lighting treatments are coming to Jamaica Avenue in Woodhaven, City officials announced on Thursday.

The new lighting will run along the thoroughfare under the elevated J/Z subway tracks from Forest Parkway to 109th Street, according to the Department of Transportation. As part of the first phase of the project, installations are now complete at nearly a dozen locations between 91st Street and Woodhaven Boulevard. DOT will continue installing the lighting treatments throughout the fall.

The project, which boasts poles that were first introduced to the borough at the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, was funded with $1.4 million in capital contributions from Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) and Borough President Melinda Katz.

Ulrich called the lights “a victory” for Woodhaven, adding that they “will not only make our streets safer, they will also add a unique aesthetic vibe to one of the busiest commercial corridors in Queens— all at a minimal impact to our environment.”

According to DOT, funding for the project has made it possible for the agency to install new poles with LED luminaires that provide better lighting for both the street and the sidewalk. The implementation will come in phases and is possible because of the City’s commitment to upgrade LED lighting, which enhances visibility for all, boosts the look of the streetscape and saves on energy costs. LED lights are intended to help the City reduce its overall carbon footprint by more than 30 percent by the year 2030.

“Around the City, we have heard from small businesses and New Yorkers near elevated trains who feel safer and more secure when streets and sidewalks down below are more brightly lit,” said DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. “This new lighting will not only improve quality of life for commuters and shoppers along Jamaica Avenue, these new energy-efficient LED treatments provide a sustainably lit and safer retail and community environment.”

Food allergies or food intolerances affect nearly all of us at some time. People having unpleasant reactions to food often wonder if it had something to do with what they had to eat.

One out of three people believe food allergies have something to do with another family member having the same allergy. In reality though, numbers show only about 5% of children and 4% of teens and adults have family related allergies.

The difference between clinically supported food allergies and what people think is causing the problem is maily because of reactions brought on by what we call a food intolerance.

Lactose intolerance is something we've all heard about and seen many products that deal with the condition.

It’s important to know the difference between intolerance and a true allergic reaction.

A food allergy is an abnormal response to food triggered by the immune system.

The immune system is not responsible for symptoms of a food intolerance, even though these symptoms can resemble one another.

Being allergic to milk is very different from not being able to digest it due to lactose intolerance.

with true alergies to certain foods, have to identiy the allergies beacuse it could save their lives. People who have true food allergies must prevent these allergic reactions because they can cause devastating illness and, in some cases, be fatal.

An allergic reaction to food can affect the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory tract, and, in the most serious cases, the cardiovascular system. Reactions can range from mild to severe, including the potentially life-threatening condition known as anaphylaxis. In the U.S., food allergy symptoms send someone to the emergency room every three minutes.

Mild symptoms may include one or more of the following: hives, Eczema,redness of the skin or around the eyes,i tchy mouth or ear canal,nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, nasal congestion or a runny nose, sneezing, slight dry cough, odd taste in mouth and uterine contractions.

If you experience any of these symptoms you should discuss them with your pharmacist or physician right away.

Remember, being prepared for an allergic reaction can often mean the difference between an unpleasant experience and a life threatening situation.

Ozone Park Civic Group Leads Fifth Shelter Rally

By Michael V. Cusenza The Ozone Park Block Association on Friday led another rally, its fifth since June, decrying the City’s plan to establish a homeless shelter at 101st Avenue and 86th Street for 113 single adult men with mental illness.

Civic President Sam Esposito singled out U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan) for her presence at the latest demonstration in front of the proposed shelter site.

“I really need to acknowledge our Congresswoman Velazquez, who took the time out of her busy schedule and supported us,” Esposito said in a Facebook message posted shortly after the event. “Our congresswoman informed me that she has been on the phone today with the Department of Homeless Services and the Mayor’s Office. Along with [State] Sen. [ Joe] Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) and Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven), the three of them have been working the phones to come to an agreement. We are eternally indebted to these elected officials for standing up for something

they believe in and for representing Ozone Park.”

Esposito later posited on the social media platform that he thinks that the tide is turning in the community’s favor.

“We believe that, in the end, we are going to win,” he said. “You may

have differences with the administration, but they are responding to our needs. And they are working closely with these elected officials to come to an agreement that will be amenable to all.”

Esposito noted this week that a hearing on the matter is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 22.

But as the suit wends its way through the labyrinthine civil court system, Esposito implored his followers to stay positive—and respectful.

“I am asking everyone to please refrain from the nasty comments publically against the mayor or DHS,” he said on Friday. “Please have the respect to NOT bad mouth them. I have it from reliable sources they are listening and they are trying to change the situation.

Stringer Plan Would Nix Two-Tiered Transit System for Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx Straphangers

By Forum Staff City Comptroller Scott Stringer on Tuesday called on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to drop Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road fares to the price of a MetroCard swipe ($2.75) for all trips within the five boroughs.

In his new report, “Expanding Access in One Swipe,” Stringer notes that while commuter rail stations are often the only mass transit option for the 1.4 million residents of 31 neighborhoods in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx, expensive ticket prices— nearly four times as costly as a MetroCard swipe—leave locals stranded and forced to take lengthy trips on overcrowded roads, subways, and buses. Simply lowering fares and allowing free transfers between commuter rail, subways, and buses for all trips in the city would have system-wide benefits and help alleviate the transit crisis, the comptroller said.

As part of his new analysis, Stringer called on the MTA to improve job access, reduce commute times, extend the reach of the transit system, and relieve overcrowding by: • Reducing fares for all in-city commuter rail trips and making more local stops. The MTA should take full advantage of its rail assets, the comptroller advised. Whether traveling via bus, subway,

or commuter trail, all in-city MTA trips should cost $2.75 and allow free transfers.

Moreover, LIRR and Metro-North trains should make more local stops in neighborhoods like St. Albans, Queens Village, Laurelhurst, Murray Hill, Spuyten Duyvil, Tremont, and Williamsbridge, so that New Yorkers can actually take advantage of this rapid rail service.

• Connecting bus service with commuter rail stations. For many commuters, the gaps between bus and rail infrastruc-

ture makes transferring between the systems and using rail altogether too difficult.

In Northeast Queens, for instance, while dozens of bus lines converge at the terminus of the 7 Train, several LIRR stations are multiple blocks from a single bus stop, with similar patterns in Northwest Bronx and Southeast Queens. As a more equitable fare policy is introduced, NYC Transit Bus and MTA Bus should provide more frequent service to these commuter rail stations, Stringer said.

• Making all commuter stations Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible.

Stringer noted that half of the Metro-North and LIRR stations in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx are not currently ADAaccessible. Much like the existing paywall that surrounds commuter rail stations, these physical barriers to access have the effect of denying service to thousands of young families, seniors, and other mobility-impaired travelers every day. This should be rectified as soon as possible, Stringer demanded, adding new elevators, ramps, and wayfinding upgrades for the sight- and hearing-impaired.

The comptroller said his proposal to open up commuter rail service at 38 Queens, Brooklyn, and Bronx stations would cost an estimated $50 million per year.

“New Yorkers shouldn’t be held hostage by the MTA to get home to their families, and they shouldn’t have to spend extra hours crammed on the subway and bus to make ends meet,” Stringer added. “Affordable Metro-North and LIRR service would give New Yorkers more time with their family and friends, cut congestion on our streets and in our subways, and expand economic accessibility for hundreds of thousands of people. The MTA should stand clear of the doors, not hold service from the straphangers who need it most.”

City Announces Expanded Enforcement, Design Changes along Northern Boulevard

By Forum Staff The City will take “dramatic steps” under its Vision Zero initiative to make increasingly infamous Northern Boulevard safer, Transportation and Police Department officials recently announced.

City DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg and NYPD Chief of Transportation Thomas Chan last week participated in Walk-to-School Day to highlight enforcement and safety enhancements planned for Northern Boulevard, ahead of a series of community workshops to develop a comprehensive redesign of the corridor.

The 11-mile thoroughfare, which extends the entire length of Queens, from Astoria to Douglaston, had six traffic fatalities in 2017, and has seen four fatalities so far this year, according to DOT statistics.

“Since the de Blasio Administration launched Vision Zero in early 2014, we have made many roadway safety improvements along Northern Boulevard each year, but tragically, this work has not been enough,” Trottenberg said. “So today DOT and NYPD are standing together on Walkto-School Day to announce a strong new enforcement effort. And we will kick off our first work shop next week with residents, elected officials, and other stakeholders to

Expanded enforcement is one key element of the new efforts on Northern Boulevard. The NYPD has already begun a sevenweek comprehensive enforcement program going along the entire boulevard. Called the High Visibility Enforcement program, the new pilot will run from Oct. 1 through Thanksgiving, with each precinct along the major thoroughfare — the 108,109,111, 114, and 115 — involved in the expanded enforcement effort, which will be overseen

by Patrol Borough Queens North.

To supplement the enforcement, DOT/ NYPD Street Teams will be placed along the corridor as well. These teams speak actively with drivers about Vision Zero priorities, including the importance of maintaining a safe speed and yielding to pedestrians. Since September, the teams have been going out twice a week, with plans to visit all of the senior centers and all of the schools on and near Northern Boulevard before the end of the year, Chan noted.

“The NYPD and our partners intend to strike the correct balance between education and enforcement, and we are doing that through intelligent leadership and comprehensive road redesign,” the chief added.

“Public safety in New York City will always be a shared responsibility with those we serve, whose input into this plan is imperative.”

Ross Lied to me about Census: Meng

By Michael V. Cusenza Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-Flushing) fired off a letter to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions demanding that he investigate Commerce Sec. Wilbur Ross for possible crimes related to making false statements with respect to documents required by law to be submitted to Congress regarding the 2020 Census.

The Meng missive comes after the Department of Justice submitted an additional document about the inclusion of a citizenship question in the 2020 Census—which would ask respondents if they are U.S. citizens—in the ongoing court case New York Immigration Coalition v. United States Department of Commerce.

According to Meng, the document reveals that Ross had spoken with former White House Senior Counselor Steve Bannon about adding a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. This contradicts the statement Ross made to Meng

– which Secretary Ross denied when testifying before Congress,” the congresswoman wrote.

“I don’t like being lied to. I’m absolutely incensed that Secretary Ross lied to me when I asked him if he had spoken with anyone in the White House about adding a citizenship question to the 2020 Census,” Meng said on Friday. “I’m asking Attorney General Sessions to investigate Secretary Ross. With the 2020 Census only 18 months away, we must have a full accounting of what happened.

The entire process around the citizenship question has been mismanaged and rushed.”

Meng has blasted the Trump administration for its decision to include the citizenship question in the next census.

Pfizer to Pay $200K+ to NY Consumers in Deceptive Advertising Settlement

The AG opened the investigation into Pfizer’s marketing of its copayment coupons to New York consumers following the receipt of a complaint from a consumer who obtained a deceptive Estring copayment coupon. After the probe, Pfizer agreed to change the text of the Estring, Quillivant, and Flector Patch copayment coupons to explain that patients could “pay as little as” a listed amount, a process Pfizer completed as of early 2018.

New York consumers are eligible to receive restitution under the settlement for the amount of their copayment that exceeded the “PAY NO MORE THAN” amount listed on the relevant Estring, Quillivant, or Flector Patch copayment coupon for the first use of the card. Consumers who want to report a deceptive advertisement of prescription drugs, including a deceptive copayment coupon, or who have any other healthcare related complaints, can reach the Attorney General’s Health Care Bureau Helpline at (800) 4289071 or file a complaint online at ag.ny.gov.

“Pfizer misled customers by promising a low copay for prescription drugs—only to leave them with major bills at the cash register. Now, they must take responsibility and provide restitution to the New Yorkers they deceived,” Underwood added.

Major biopharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc. has agreed to pay $500,000 in penalties, fees, and costs to the State of New York, as well as over $200,000 in restitution to consumers as part of a settlement with the State Attorney General following an investigation into Pfizer’s business and advertising practices for its copayment coupon program, NY AG Barbara Underwood announced on Thursday.

The settlement resolves allegations that Pfizer deceptively marketed its copayment coupon program for its Estring, Quillivant XR and Quillichew ER (“Quillivant”), and Flector Patch products when it distributed these copayment coupons to consumers throughout the state without clearly and conspicuously disclosing the material terms and conditions. As part of the program, consumers were told that they would “pay no more than” $15 or $20, for example, for those drugs—but ended up spending far more at the cash register, Underwood noted.

Pfizer’s copayment coupons stated in large, clear text that eligible consumers would “PAY NO MORE THAN” certain amounts out-of-pocket. For example, large, bold print on the Estring copayment coupon said that a consumer using the copayment coupon would “PAY NO MORE THAN $15” for a prescription.
