Data Show OD Deaths in NYC Remain at Epidemic Levels, yet City ‘Optimistic’ that Prevention Efforts ‘are moving us in the Right Direction’
The City Health Department on Monday released a report that confirmed 1,487 drug overdose deaths in 2017, 62 more deaths than the prior year. In contrast, in 2016 there were 437 more deaths than in 2015—a rate of increase that has officials encouraged. The same analysis also showed that, for the first time, the lethal synthetic opioid fentanyl (pictured in pill and crystal form) was the most common substance involved in drug-overdose deaths in the five boroughs.
