After Cancellation Sparks Criticism, Queens Museum Agrees to Host Israel Anniversary Celebration

By Michael V. Cusenza After weathering a maelstrom of pointed criticism from elected officials and international dignitaries, the Queens Museum recently reversed its decision and once again agreed to host a re-enactment of the 1947 United Nations vote establishing the state of Israel.

Last Wednesday, the museum decided to cancel the event that was originally set for Nov. 29 due to negative feedback it had received from “Palestinian friends of the museum.”

However, according to a Politico New York report, a spokeswoman confirmed later that day that the museum had reassessed its position.

“After a productive conversation with Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon, the Queens Museum will work with the Israeli Mission on the proposed commemoration of the 1947 vote,” Vyoma Venkataraman said via email. “We are deeply committed to all the communities we serve through our meaningful arts programming and we are

looking forward to making this a successful event.”

After a stinging rebuke of the borough cultural institution, City Comptroller Scott Stringer applauded the change of heart.

“This is no doubt the right thing to do,” Stringer said. “What we’ve watched across the country over the past few days — neo-Nazis

marching in the streets of America promoting symbols of hate — has been a shock. By reversing course and holding this important event, the museum is fixing what had been a mistake and correcting what was a terrible message to send to communities across the five boroughs.

I’m pleased this event will proceed.”

The museum’s decision to cancel sparked

an avalanche of sharply worded statements last Wednesday afternoon.

“I firmly disagree with the Queens Museum’s decision to deny the Permanent Mission of Israel to the United Nation's space request to hold a commemoration of the creation of the State of Israel,” said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. “Holding the event in the very halls of the historic 1947 vote would have had a special, meaningful significance, and the denial to the request is especially disappointing. The Queens Museum should revisit the interpretation of their own policies to ensure less discretion and more clarity for future space rental requests. As an alternative venue, I’ve offered Queens Borough Hall to the Mission of Israel for its upcoming commemoration this November.”

The building in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park that hosts the Queens Museum was the original home of the United Nations. On Nov. 29, 1947, in that edifice, the UN General Assembly adopted the Partition Plan for Palestine, allowing for the birth of the State of Israel.

Rally Demands Better Bus Service in Five Boroughs

By Michael V. Cusenza Elected officials joined the Bus Turnaround Coalition on Tuesday in Manhattan to demand better bus service in the five boroughs.

The rally sought to address the problems that plague the 2.5 million daily bus riders – the often forgotten victims of the transit crisis: frequent overcrowding, slow travel speeds, and inaccurate schedules.

According to Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx), chairman of the Assembly Committee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions, the improvement needs of an aging and neglected bus system are typically overshadowed by the attention given to the subway system, which serves 5 million people a day. Despite high-profile troubles with subway service and planned service changes – the “Summer of Hell” – bus ridership has declined 2 percent compared to last year over the same time period, Dinowitz noted at Tuesday’s event, which took place at the Warren Street and Broadway bus stop near City Hall.

lutions to improve the bus system: In order to help speed up buses and reduce bus bunching, the agency should deploy a robust transit signal priority network by 2018; and ensure that alldoor boarding is a prominent part of the MTA’s plans for implementation of the MetroCard replacement payment system.

According to the coalition, transit signal priority reduces bus “dwell time” at traffic lights by holding them green at intersections for a few extra seconds as buses approach to allow them to cross the intersection and maintain a constant speed. Now, advocates and elected officials are calling on the MTA to expand transit signal priority, currently operating on small handful of select bus routes, citywide.

The BTC has also advocated for all-door boarding, which the coalition has said would also help to reduce dwell time at bus stops. According to the group, the MTA’s Select Bus Service has demonstrated how much more quickly buses can move when riders pay before boarding: With the introduction of off-board payment collection, dwell time reduced 40 percent on the M15, Bx12, and B44.

Republican Ulrich Endorses Democrat David in Council District 28 Race

“Richard David will make a great member of the New York City Council,” Ulrich said at Monday’s event at Lefferts Boulevard and Liberty Avenue in South Richmond Hill. “He is honest, hardworking and embodies the American dream for so many people of West Indian descent. I support him and urge my Democratic friends in Council District 28 to vote for him on Sept. 12.”

According to police reports, on Friday, Aug. 18, around 6:35 p.m., the suspect tried to break into a Centerville Avenue residence while the homeowner was inside. No items were stolen, and no injuries were reported.

According to investigators, the young man was recorded by the home’s surveillance cameras. He is either white or Hispanic, last seen with a beard, wearing dark-colored

Former ‘Civic Virtue’ Site now ‘Women’s Plaza in Queens’

By Forum Staff Queens Borough President Melinda Katz on Tuesday hosted the ribbon-cutting for the newly-restored “Women’s Plaza in Queens,” a public space dedicated to borough females.

The plaza is located in Kew Gardens at the northeast corner of Union Turnpike and Queens Boulevard, adjacent to Borough Hall, on the site of the “Triumph of Civic Virtue” statue.

“Queens has been home to so many incredible, trail-blazing women across all industries, from business to politics, sports to entertainment,” Katz said. “The ‘Women’s Plaza in Queens’ – located in our borough’s civic center – is a visible, meaningful tribute to all the women of Queens who have made a lasting positive impact in New York City and around the globe. This newly-restored public space at Queens Borough Hall should be utilized by many, and will serve as a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much further we must go.”

“Civic Virtue” was a 17-foot-high marble statue that depicted a male nude standing on top of two female figures representing “Vice” and “Corruption.” It was commissioned by Mayor George B. McClellan, Jr. in 1909 and designed by Beaux-Arts sculptor Frederick MacMonnies. The statue was installed and resided at City Hall until it was relocated by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia in 1941 to the grounds of the then-new Queens Borough Hall, where it

remained for over 70 years. “Civic Virtue” finally found a permanent home in December 2012 at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, where MacMonnies’ father, mother and brother are interred, Katz noted.

In 2014, Katz endorsed former Borough President Helen Marshall’s idea to repair and restore the remaining structure and surrounding plaza, and to repurpose and dedicate it to the women of the World’s Borough.

The base that is the centerpiece of “Women’s Plaza in Queens” remained in place after “Civic Virtue” was removed, but its condition had deteriorated due to prior years of neglect and exposure to the elements. The base was recently repaired and cleaned as part of a restoration project funded by Katz and Mayor Bill de Blasio, which began in May 2016 by the City Department of Design and Construction and contractor Perspective Construction Company. The $960,000 capital project restored the damaged stonework, improved landscaping, and installed plantings, new lighting and benches for public use. The site now also includes a ceremonial plaque indicating that the plaza has been rededicated in honor of the women of Queens.

“The recently completed renovations for the new ‘Women’s Plaza’ will enhance the community while paying tribute to the women of Queens,” said U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing). “Thanks to Borough President Katz, and all involved in this initiative, for working to recognize the women of our great borough.”

Nits are the empty white egg shells which are left when lice hatch. They look like dandruff, but stick to hair and cannot be easily brushed out.

Lice are spread from close hair-to-hair contact. Don’t believe any myth which says they do not jump or fly—they crawl–– period, and generally cannot survive longer than 24 hours off the host. Head lice soon die when away from hair, and don’t live in clothes and bedding, etc.

Reconstruction of M Line Fresh Pond Bridge to Wrap up on Sept. 1: MTA

By Forum Staff The reconstruction of the Fresh Pond Bridge on the M line will be successfully completed on Sept. 1 as scheduled, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Friday.

According to the agency, this will conclude the first phase of a $163 million project to replace two deteriorating M line overpasses.

During Phase 1, the MTA said it rebuilt the century-old Fresh Pond Bridge using modern building materials. According to the agency, the span is vital to M service, carrying trains to its Queens terminus and providing access to subway car storage yards.

Completion of the first phase of the project will allow the restoration of train service to four stations on the Myrtle Avenue line in Queens, the MTA noted.

Phase 2 work on the elevated tracks atop the Myrtle Viaduct will begin on Saturday, Sept. 2. This century-old, 310-foot-long concrete structure connects the M with the JZ lines and has been in daily, non-stop use since it was built in 1913. The aging concrete deck has deteriorated after decades of heavy use and exposure to inclement weather, and must be replaced along with the tracks and other infrastructure.

The MTA also announced that Phase 2 work on the elevated tracks atop the Myrtle Viaduct, located between the Myrtle Avenue and Central Avenue stations, will begin on Saturday, Sept. 2.

which is located between the Myrtle Av JMZ and Central Av M stations, involves building a concrete deck structure and safety walkways and installing new third rail, low-vibration tracks, new steel columns, new foundations, and new drainage. The work requires a full suspension of train service on the overpass to allow for its complete demolition and to provide unfettered access for workers. The work is expected to take eight months, ending in spring 2018. The demolition and reconstruction will ensure a smoother rider and quieter

track operations thanks to the new rails and infrastructure, the transit agency noted.

“Work is on schedule for this critical M line reconstruction project that is sorely needed on the Myrtle Avenue Line. Without rebuilding the Myrtle Viaduct and the Fresh Pond Bridge, we would not be able to continue to run M trains safely because the deteriorating condition of these structures are getting to a point beyond what our crews can fix during routine maintenance,” said MTA Managing Director Ronnie Hakim.

“We thank our customers for their patience and we hope they will agree that the shortterm inconvenience now will be worth the improved reliability moving forward.”

During the final phase of the Myrtle Viaduct reconstruction, the MTA noted that M service operates in two sections: as local weekday service between Broadway Junction and Forest Hills-71 Av, and as a shuttle train service making all station stops between the Middle Village-Metropolitan Av terminus and Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs LM. The shuttle train will serve Metropolitan Av, Fresh Pond Rd, Forest Av, Seneca Av and Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs, running every 10 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes during overnight hours. At Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs, shuttle train customers can switch to the L line or free shuttle buses for service to the Myrtle Av JMZ station. Customers paying with a MetroCard who have exited at either Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs LM or Myrtle Av JMZ and then transferred to the free shuttle bus can re-enter the subway station at the other end of the shuttle bus route, allowing customers to connect between Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs LM and Myrtle Av JMZ without paying twice.

For service to Knickerbocker Av or Central Av, which will continue to be closed during this work, customers can transfer to free shuttle buses to the Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs LM and Myrtle Av JMZ stations.

Three Men Sentenced to Lengthy Prison Terms after Gunpoint Burglary Conviction Trial was first in Queens to use police body cam video as evidence

By Forum Staff Three men have been sentenced to long terms of incarceration – ranging from 18 years to 25 years to life in prison – for the violent gunpoint home invasion that terrorized a family of five in Jamaica in June 2015, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

This was the first case in the borough where jurors were presented with police body cam video as evidence during the trial, Brown noted.

Aasim McPhee, 35, of Richmond Hill; John Hymes, 49, of Manhattan; and Robb Bull, 28, address unknown, were convicted in June of first-degree burglary, first- and second-degree robbery, first-degree attempted robbery, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. Last week, sen-

tenced Bull to 20 years in prison to be followed by five years’ post release supervision; Hymes, who, Brown noted, is a persistent felon, was sentenced to 25 years to life; and McPhee was ordered to serve 18 years in prison, also to be followed by five years’ post release supervision.

According to trial records, around 12:30 a.m. on June 4, 2015, one of the occupants of a home on 105th Avenue heard loud banging on the front door. He called 911, but before he could relay any information Hymes walked into the man’s ground-floor bedroom and pointed a gun at him, ordering him to floor. Bull rushed up the stairs to the second floor and yelled out that he was the police and put a gun to a 17-year-old girl’s head. The teen ran to her mother’s room with Bull behind her. He ordered both women to the floor and demanded money.

According to court records, all three defendants ransacked the home with both Bull and McPhee demanding money from the victims. Moments later, responding police entered the house and announced themselves. Police Officer Timothy Brosnan, who was participating in the City Police Department’s pilot body cam pro-

gram, turned his camera on and captured 28 minutes of video footage. That video footage showed the apprehension of both Bull and McPhee. The two men were trying to escape and had exited the house through a rear second-floor window, but were found on the roof. Upon entering the backyard, Brosnan observed Bull standing

on the roof and McPhee crouched down and crawling toward the neighbor’s house. In December 2016, Merrill Lynch notified the husband’s son, who has power of attorney over his father’s financial affairs, of numerous checks that had been written from his father’s cash management account that appeared to be forged.

The checks were all payable to Simmons and had been negotiated through her checking account. A review of the father’s financial accounts for the calendar year 2016 showed forged checks totaling more than $170,000 from two separate bank accounts and payable to Simmons.

Total Solar Eclipse a Big City Hit

By Michael V. Cusenza For a brief period on Monday afternoon, the city that never sleeps, the greatest and busiest metropolis in the world, stopped to appreciate the first total solar eclipse visible in the continental United States in 38 years.

“Amazing to see something cosmic bring

so many New Yorkers together,” tweeted Police Commissioner Jim O’Neill. “For just a few minutes, nothing else mattered.”

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the celestial event is a solar eclipse in which the moon passes between the sun and Earth and blocks all or part of the sun for up to about three

hours, from beginning to end, as viewed from a given location. For this eclipse, the longest period when the moon completely blocks the sun from any given location along the path was about 2 minutes and 40 seconds. NASA noted that everyone in North America and parts of South America, Africa, and Europe witnessed at least a partial solar

eclipse, where the moon covered part of the sun’s disk.

“The divided United States of America will unite today, sharing a cosmic event predicted by the methods and tools of science,” astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson posted on Twitter early Monday morning.

Borough Health Centers Set to Receive Share of $6.4 Million in Federal Funds

Cusenza Two borough community health centers will receive a portion of the $6,400,528 in federal funds recently allocated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand (both D-N.Y.) announced on Thursday.

According to the elected officials, the Health Center Quality Improvement funds are rewards for 62 New York-based healthcare centers that have exceeded or met quality standards and patient care goals.

Dominican Man Gets 24-Year Prison Term after Cold-Case Killing Conviction

Rafael Rodriguez, 47, was the last person seen with the Corona woman in November 2002 and at that time he was overheard threatening to kill and dismember her.

District Attorney Brown said, “The defendant did all he could to elude justice, but today the Court sentenced him to a very long term of incarceration to punish him for this vicious crime and protect society. At ‘Poorly Marked, Poorly Organized’ Rockaway Intersection, Pols Call for Safety Measures Pheffer Amato, Addabbo pledge to rally support for bill that would boost crossing-guard coverage

Cusenza Students, parents, community leaders, and elected officials on Monday called on the City Department of Transportation to immediately install safety enhancements at the intersection of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 102nd Street in Rockaway Beach in time for the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach), State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach), and City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) represent what they have characterized as a “poorly-marked, poorly-organized intersection that hundreds of students walk across every day,” and urged the administration to make it “ready for school, which starts in two weeks.”

Pheffer Amato and Addabbo also talked about a bill they introduced earlier this year that would bring crossing guard levels in the blocks around high schools up to the expanded level already provided for streets around K – 8 schools. The legislation would require crossing guards to be placed on the corners of every city block that hosts a pub-

lic or private high school during arrival and dismissal.

“The DOT needs to make simple adjustments, like repainting crosswalks and installing proper signs and lights. There are eight schools, including five high schools, within a two-block radius of here,” Pheffer Amato said. “We’re standing up together, today, to call attention to a particularly bad in-

tersection, with a particularly high demand, which the DOT should prioritize. We’re also requesting that the NYPD add crossing guards to this particular school zone. On a citywide and statewide basis, myself and Senator Addabbo have introduced a bill in the legislature to mandate that students are guarded, no matter their age.”

According to Addabbo, in 2015

there were approximately 2,300 crossing guard posts throughout the five boroughs, although vacancies were reported to be as high as 200, he noted. Since then, the City and Local 372, the crossing guard union, have come to an agreement to raise pay for crossing guards and make other reforms to draw interested candidates to the field.

“During the academic year, the lives of well over one million City children hang in the balance as students travel back and forth to school on local streets. Sadly, in recent years, a number of innocent children were struck and killed on their way to or from class, and we need to take all steps necessary to prevent similar tragedies,” Addabbo added. “The safety of our children must be paramount, which is why Stacey and I are advocating for state legislation to increase the number of school crossing guards near all of our City schools. This measure would not only increase the safety of our children, but would increase credible job opportunities.”

Christ the King HS Names Geri Martinez New Principal

By Forum Staff The Board of Trustees of Christ the King High School on Friday announced that Geri Martinez has been appointed principal of the Middle Village school.

According to CK, Martinez began her career at Stella Maris High School as a guidance counselor, and later served as assistant principal. Martinez then became principal of Stella Maris, a role she held for 14 years.

Upon the closing of the Rockaway Park school, she served as assistant principal of Bishop Kearney High School in Brooklyn, and most currently, interim principal of BKHS. “After a thorough review of highly qualified candidates, we at Christ the King are pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Geri Martinez as principal,” said Board Chairman Serphin Maltese. “Her experience and enthusiasm as an educator for

over 30 years will be a wonderful fit with the hard work and efforts put in by the faculty and administration to make Christ the King a pillar of academic excellence.”

Martinez holds a degree in school counseling and State certification in administration and supervision. She has also been teaching at St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn for more than 16 years, and serves on a host of educational and Catholic-affiliated organizations.

“I have been blessed in my life to always be able to do what I love to do, working with faculty and students, meeting the challenges of each day and searching for the next step in the continuum of professional and personal growth for all,” Martinez said.

“I now look forward to my new role as principal of Christ the King High School.”

Three Borough Elementary Schools Will Join DOE's Computer Science Initia-

“Computer Science for All – particularly at the elementary school level – is an investment in our future,” Mayor de Blasio said.

By Forum Staff Twelve more City elementary schools – including three in Queens – will participate in the Software Engineering Program Junior for the 2017-2018 school year.

Public School 97 in Woodhaven, PS 354 in Jamaica, and PS 181 in Springfield Gardens, are among the dozen schools set to join the 11 that participated in 2016-2017, the program’s debut year.

According to the administration, SEPjr is the first schoolwide initiative for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade to learn foundational computer science concepts through both computer-based and “unplugged” activities – including block-based coding, robotics, programming “robotic friends” in the class to complete a task, and learning about loops and functions through song and dance. The program is part of the City’s Computer Science for All initiative, which aims to bring computer science to every elementary, middle, and high school by 2025 through public-private partnerships facilitated by the Fund for Public Schools.

“As we move towards our vision of equity and excellence for all students, I am excited to bring SEPjr to 12 more elementary schools this year,” said Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña. “SEPjr is a one-of-a-kind program, and it demonstrates our commitment to Computer Science for All – which means providing even our youngest learners with the opportunity to learn valuable CS concepts and improve skills like collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving. Computer Science for All shows the commitment of our educators to constantly improving their craft and bringing new, engaging topics back to their students.”

This spring, the de Blasio administration announced 38 additional high schools committing to add the AP Computer Science

Principles course for the 2017-2018 school year. Additional elementary, middle, and high schools will also offer a variety of new computer science coursework this fall.

“Computer Science for All – particularly at the elementary school level – is an investment in our future,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “As we continue to expand programs like SEPjr, the AP Computer Science Principles course, and other computer science pathways, we are ensuring that our kids have the skills they need to be the next generation of creators and leaders.”

According to the Department of Education, through computer science education, students learn to think and solve problems, collaborate and build relationships with peers, communicate and create with technology, and better understand technology we interact with daily.

“I am glad to see continued expansion of programs such as the SEPjr program for our schools. Continued effort to give our children early computer science skills and education will help benefit them in the 21stcentury economy. I am also happy to see that PS 97 The Forest Park School is a part of this expansion for 2017-2018,” said Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven).

FAR FROM OVER In Wednesday’s New York Daily News, Gotham Gazette editor Ben Max penned an op-ed headlined “So far, one lame mayoral election.”

“This is not how it is supposed to go. Ideally, less than three weeks from Primary Day and three months from Election Day, New York City would be experiencing a robust, interesting, substantive, competitive campaign to see who will be mayor for the next four years,” Max wrote. “Instead, we’ve been dealt a dud. But it’s not so much that it’s a snoozer, it’s that it’s a gutter ball.”

Admittedly, this “race” doesn’t seem to be amounting to much of one. Mayor Bill de Blasio, the overwhelming favorite to win re-election in November, is set to face off in the first debate of the season tonight, and we’d venture to guess that more than half of the voting New York public couldn’t name who BdB will joust with on the Symphony Space stage tonight at 7 p.m.

The “leading” GOP candidate, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, is reportedly trailing BdB by 35 points in some general election polls.

Do your homework. The man Dietl derisively refers to as Big Bird may have a gargantuan lead and campaign coffers overflowing with cash, but actions and empty promises speak louder than bank accounts.
