Cuomo Allocates $4M for Child Advocacy Centers to Enhance Abuse Investigations

By Forum Staff Twenty-six State-approved Child Advocacy Centers will share more than $4 million to enhance services provided to children who are victims of crime, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday.

The centers are located across New York and will use the funding to offset the cost of purchasing and installing video recording equipment, as well as hiring specially trained staff to interview young victims of sexual and physical abuse.

Facilities in the five boroughs are set to receive the lion’s share of the funding. Safe Horizon will get $826,113 of the $4 million for its CACs in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

“This critical funding will help provide a safe haven for children who have suffered from abuse and help them take the first step on the road to recovery,” Cuomo said. “With this funding, Child Advocacy Centers will be better equipped to partner with law enforcement to bring the abusers to justice while offering effective emotional support services to child victims and their families.”

and victim advocates to partner with center staff and respond to allegations of child abuse.

This collaborative approach helps to reduce trauma experienced by child victims, assists their families, provides necessary support services and allows for thorough investigations to hold offenders accountable.

According to the administration, the grant funding will allow the Child Advocacy Centers to either hire a specially trained forensic interviewer or an appropriate consultant to

handle interviews with child victims. These professionals create an environment that provides children with a safe space to disclose abuse, reduces the number of times they must tell what happened, and helps children with their healing process. All centers also will purchase a variety of equipment to facilitate those interviews and allow multidisciplinary team members to communicate in real time while cases are being investigated, including video recording and conference call equip-

ment, laptops, cell phones and smart boards.

The grants are administered by the State Office of Victim Services and are funded through the federal Victims of Crime Act and the state’s Criminal Justice Improvement account, both of which are funded through fines, fees and surcharges paid by certain offenders after conviction in state or federal court.

The OVS worked with the State Office of Children and Family Services – which approves and also funds Child Advocacy Centers – to determine how the funding could best support the centers’ work. OVS delivers additional funding to 18 CACs to provide direct services to children and families; those centers are part of a network of 223 victimassistance programs across the state that is funded by the agency.

“As a former prosecutor, I can speak to the complex and heart-wrenching nature of child abuse cases and how essential it is to have services readily available to traumatized children and their families,” said OVS Director Elizabeth Cronin. “Child Advocacy Centers provide these critical services and this additional funding will allow those Centers to ensure that interviews are conducted by specially trained individuals in a manner and setting that is least intrusive to the child victims of physical or sexual abuse.”

Sub-Vendor Spending now Available at City’s Online Transparency Resource

By Forum Staff Detailed sub-vendor spending will be displayed on Checkbook NYC – the online transparency resource for City contracting, payroll, spending, revenue, and budget data, Comptroller Scott Stringer announced on Friday.

According to Stringer, Checkbook NYC’s sub-vendor dashboard will include additional information, such as: A widget outlining the number of contracts citywide that require sub-vendor data to be reported and, if such a requirement exists, if the data has been submitted; A second widget showing how many proposed sub-vendors have been approved or rejected by agencies’ chief contracting officers, across the entire city; How many proposed sub-vendors are at each stage of the approval process at each agency; and How many sub-contracts have been entered into by prime vendors by agency.

Stringer also noted that in addition to allowing every interested party outside of government to view information on sub-vendors, this information will also enable: Prime vendors and Agency Chief Contracting Officers to see which vendors have declared and entered sub-vendor information on prime contracts, as required by the Mayor’s Office of Contract Services; Prime vendors to review the status of all their contracts and sub-vendor data; and Sub-vendors to cross-reference information entered by prime vendors with their own accounts payable systems to ensure proper, prompt payment from prime vendors.

According to the Comptroller’s Office, Checkbook NYC is a first-of-its-kind online transparency tool that provides up-to-date information about the City’s finances. The updates announced on Friday are the third update to Checkbook NYC since Stringer took office. Previously, the Comptroller’s Office added data from the City Economic Development Corporation and included information about minority- and women-owned businesses.

“This is the start of the process — not the end. Right now, there’s a small amount of subvendor information in Checkbook. It won’t be filled overnight. Over time, we know more information will be added and we know it will yield a more open government,” Stringer said.

Ulrich Announces Expansion of Sanitation Services along Cross Bay Boulevard

And the remaining $60,000 of the initiative will expand trash pick-up services in problematic areas throughout the district, Ulrich said, including Beach Channel Drive, 116th Street, Cross Bay Boulevard, 102nd Street, Coleman Square, Liberty Avenue, 160th Avenue, 165th Avenue, East 20th Street, 159th Road, 157th Avenue, 102nd Street and West 12th Street, among others.

“We are thrilled to be able to partner with the Council member to make sure that we are defining our services based on what the community really needs,” Garcia added. “The additional baskets that [the Councilman] has funded, as well as the mechanical broom service, will help take this community to a new level.”

Hate Graffiti Found in Forest Park

By Michael V. Cusenza City Parks Department staffers recently discovered antiSemitic and anti-gay messages scrawled on numerous rocks and tree trunks inside Forest Park, according to a report on a widely recognized blog that chronicles green spaces in the five boroughs.

The “disturbing graffiti,” which included swastikas and phrases such as “I Kill GAY PPL” and “KILL GAY ppl,” was found last week in Forest Park off the orange trail between Park Lane South and the closed road by 112th Street, Geoffrey Croft, founder of NYC Park Advocates, wrote on A Walk in the Park.

Cops Still Searching for South Ozone Park Safe Thieves

By Forum Staff The de Blasio administration on Tuesday announced that the 2016-17 school year was the safest on record, with an 18-percent decrease in major crime since the 2014-15 year.

The City Police Department also shared safety data showing that the number of school-based arrests and summons in schools has continued to decrease.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the positive numbers are a result of strengthened collaboration between the NYPD and the Department of Education, which has improved safety while using school discipline programs that are “fairer and more effective.” Additionally, according to the administration, there has been a large decline in schools designated by the State Education Department as “persistently dangerous.”

Safety data also demonstrates an 8-percent decrease in school-related arrests and an 11-percent decrease in the number of summonses issued by the School Safety Division during the 2016-17 school year,compared to the 2015-2016 school year.

“All students need a safe and supportive learning environment to succeed in the classroom and make a positive impact in the community. Thanks to the hard work of the NYPD and the Department of Education, families can rest assured that our school buildings are safe places,” de Blasio said. “The impacts of our investments in school climate and mental health programs are clear: Crime is at an all-time low and graduation is at an all-time high.”

The NYPD and DOE noted that they have focused on referring more minor incidents to school administrators in lieu of criminal justice responses. According to the agencies, by holding youth accountable and implementing school-based interventions, the City is minimizing their court involvement and giving students resources and opportunities to stay on the path toward college and careers.

“While we continue to make progress on Vision Zero this year, one cyclist fatality is still too many,” de Blasio said. “The conclusion of this excellent multi-agency study – that cycling has grown safer at the same time that its popularity has soared – means that our Vision Zero efforts, including redesigning streets to add protected bike lanes, are making a real difference. With detailed and specific plans to make further improvements that protect cyclists in neighborhoods around the City, this study will help us keep that momentum going for years to come.”

• Bicycle lanes – Between 2006 and

2016, the majority – 89 percent – of cyclist fatalities occurred on streets without a bicycle lane.

• Intersections – A majority of cyclist fatalities and severe injuries occur at intersections. Study results reveal the majority of cyclist fatalities (65 percent) and those killed/severely injured (89 percent) happen at intersections.

• Creating new “Priority Bicycle Districts” – A number of neighborhoods in the five boroughs have significant cyclist fatalities and severe injuries, but are underserved by the bicycle network. The study identifies 10 Priority Bicycle Districts, community boards with comparatively high numbers of cyclist fatalities and severe injuries and few bicycle lanes. These districts – seven in Brooklyn and three in Queens – represent 14 percent of the city’s bicycle network, but now have 23 percent of cyclist fatalities or severe injuries.

“With the tremendous growth of cycling in New York City, comes the responsibility of all users of our roadways to be cognizant of bicyclist safety,” said NYPD’s Chief of Transportation Thomas Chan.

“Drivers need to be aware of the vulnerability of bicyclists and drive in a manner conducive to bicyclist safety. At the same time, bicyclists must also obey the rules of the road and have the proper equipment to ensure their visibility.”

Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Two Cops following Jamaica Traffic Stop

By Forum Staff A Queens man has been charged with the attempted murder of two police officers, ]after being pulled over earlier this week for running a stop sign and driving with a defective taillight. It is alleged that the defendant dragged one officer with his vehicle and clipped the other officer in the arm while attempting to escape arrest.

“This case clearly illustrated how dangerous police work is and why police officers are not permitted the luxury of assuming that any traffic stop is a routine matter,” said DA Brown. “In this case, the defendant is accused of showing that he has no regard for authority and is a menace to society by his senseless and violent actions. He now faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.”

Officer Gaspertti was standing at the front driver’s side door of the vehicle and his partner, Officer Arlistico, was located on the front passenger side.

Freistat refused to exit the vehicle when told to do so and when Officer Gaspertti opened the front driver’s side door in an attempt to get the defendant out of the vehicle, Freistat accelerated the vehicle forward

at a high rate of speed, trapping Officer Gaspertti with the vehicle’s opened driver’s side door and dragging him until Freistat struck a parked vehicle.

As Officer Arlistico again approached the vehicle and attempted to open the front passenger’s door, Freistat allegedly drove the vehicle in reverse, forcing Officer Arlistico to jump out of the way to avoid being struck by the vehicle. Freistat then allegedly drove the vehicle forward and struck Officer Arlistico with the vehicle’s passenger door as he drove past him with Officer Gaspertti still trapped inside the driver’s side door and being dragged by the vehicle until Freistat struck two more parked vehicles.

As he was being placed under arrest, Freistat flailed his arms and twisted his body in an attempt to avoid being handcuffed. A knife was recovered from the floor of the vehicle.

Officer Gaspertti was taken to a local Queens hospital for various injuries, including numerous lacerations, bruising, swelling, substantial to his face and body and a broken right patellar (kneecap). Officer Arlistico was also taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. In executing a court-authorized search warrant on Freistat’s vehicle, police allegedly recovered a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol containing eight rounds of ammunition.

Police Search Kissena Park for Two Bodies: Reports

By Forum Staff Two brothers from Australia recently were caught trying to smuggle gun parts onto an airplane departing John F. Kennedy International Airport by concealing some of the components in their underwear, the Transportation Security Administration announced on Tuesday.

According to the TSA, as each man entered the advanced imaging technology scanner at the checkpoint at JFK the machines signaled alarms in different sections of their bodies to include their pockets and groin areas. A closer search revealed that each man was wearing two sets of clothing in an unsuccessful attempt to conceal parts of air pistols, which were hidden in their pockets as well as concealed in their underwear. TSA officers retrieved their checked baggage, and a look inside revealed additional gun components scattered throughout their luggage along

TSA officials notified Port Authority Police who arrested the men on multiple charges.

A Saturday evening Newsday report indicated that cops were digging in an area of the Flushing park at 164th Street and Underhill Avenue in search of two victims of the ultraviolent transnational MS-13 gang that an informant claimed were buried there.

The Police Department would neither confirm nor deny the search, which apparently proved fruitless. According to that same Newsday story, the dig “concentrated on a particular spot where NYPD cadaver dogs got a ‘hit,’ sources said. Animal bones were found, but no human remains, one of the sources said Saturday night.”

The report also indicated that the information was provided by a prisoner who “claimed bodies were buried in the park and took detectives to one of the locations, where the dogs alerted.”

Queens Village Man Sentenced to up to 50 Years in Prison for Sex-Trafficking Teen Girls

By Forum Staff A Queens Village man has been sentenced to up to 50 years in prison for sex trafficking and promoting prostitution of two teenage girls – ages 18 and 19.

The defendant was identified as Ricardi Dumervil (a/k/a “Dirty”), 29, of Queens Village.

Dumervil was convicted of two counts of sex trafficking, one count of second-degree promoting prostitution and two counts of third-degree promoting prostitution following a jury trial last month. Dumervil received consecutive terms of 12 ½ to 25 years in prison on each of his sex trafficking convictions, for a total of 25 to 50 years in prison. “The defendant has now been held accountable for his despicable acts of inducing fear of physical harm into two young women so that he could treat them as chattel, commodities to be sold to others for cash, which he then

pocketed for himself.”

Trial testimony showed Dumervil forced a 18-yearold and 19-year-old girl into prostitution between April 1, 2014, and March 7, 2015, by instilling a fear in them that he would physically injury them if they did not comply with his demand to engage in sexual activity with various individuals in exchange for money, which they were required to turn over to him.

DA Brown noted that Dumervil’s conviction is the latest in a long string of sex trafficking convictions – 35 – obtained by his office since State legislation strengthening penalties against human trafficking took effect on November 1, 2007.

As of December 31, 2016, the last available year for statistics, the office’s sex trafficking convictions totaled nearly one-third of the statewide total. Significantly, all of the defendants have been, or in Dumervil’s case will be, sentenced to serve state prison time.

Reputed Members of MS-13 Gang Charged with Fatal Shooting of Man outside Flushing Deli

“It is alleged that the defendants acting in concert with one another shot the victim once in the chest,” said District Attorney Brown. “This was a cold and senseless act of violence that ended the life of a 39- year-old father from El Salvador.” He noted that the defendants face the possibility of spending the rest of their lives behind bars. Identified as Roberto Abrego, 23, and

Last year news broke that New York was going to test water on Long Island for contamination from toxic groundwater near the old Grumman site in Bethpage, which previously housed the U.S. Navy. Decades ago it was determined that the site was toxic and the Navy and Grumman had spent millions of dollars to clean it up, but despite this, fears remained that there was some contamination that may have seeped from the site into the groundwater.

Governor Cuomo subsequently announced that the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) was going to seek financial compensation for damages to groundwater resources related to that contamination. As a transplanted Queens’s native who now lives in Bethpage, the news was troubling to say the least, but it is just one of many examples of a contaminated water supply. Just before midnight on Tuesday, May 30, Fernando Gonzalez Chavez was outside a deli located at 40-38 162nd Street in Flushing.

Surveillance video of the scene allegedly shows one of the defendants - wearing a hooded sweatshirt - walk up to Mr. Chavez and shoot him once in the chest. The two defendants were allegedly acting in concert with one another to kill Mr. Chavez.

The bullet perforated the victim’s lungs and struck his aorta. The 39-year-old father died at the scene.

If these types of examples are startling, then this one will really get to you. We are in the midst of a heartbreaking contamination event involving our service men and women and their families at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. From the 1950s through the 1980s, people living or working at the U.S. Marine Corps base there were potentially exposed to drinking water contaminated with industrial solvents, benzene, and other chemicals. It is estimated that almost one million people were exposed to contaminated water during this time.

The Veterans Administration (VA) has established a presumptive service connection for veterans, reservists, and National Guard members exposed to contaminants in the water supply at

Camp Lejeune from August 1, 1953 through December 31, 1987, who later developed one of the following eight diseases: adult leukemia, aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, multiple myeloma, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, or Parkinson's disease. These conditions are the only ones for which there is sufficient scientific and medical evidence to support the creation of presumptions. However, the VA will continue to review relevant information as it becomes available.

The presumptive service connection means that all Lejeune veterans with one of the eight conditions listed above will not have to provide documentation proving their conditions were caused by the tainted water.

President Barack Obama approved a $2.2 billion compensation program to pay disability compensation benefits. Disability Compensation is

a tax free monetary benefit paid to veterans with disabilities that are the result of a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service. Compensation also may be paid for postservice disabilities that are considered related or secondary to disabilities occurring in service, and for disabilities presumed to be related to circumstances of military service, even though they may arise after service. As many of these conditions develop over time, the veteran may no longer be on active duty. This will not disqualify a claim for compensation. If you or a family member were at Camp Lejeune, it is imperative that you know your rights. They are complicated and often misunderstood, thereby leading our veterans to miss out on benefits they are more than entitled to and definitely deserve. We are awed by our veterans’ commitment to this country and we thank them for their service.

106th Precinct Auxiliary force honored at this year’s celebration

Cusenza Thousands of City police officers and dozens of borough neighborhoods on Tuesday celebrated that unique bond between cop and community at the annual “National Night Out.” The 106th Precinct and the command’s community council hosted this year’s NNO event at Schneiderman Playground in Lindenwood. Under a clear summer sky, hundreds of families enjoyed myriad activities for children, giveaways, music, food and fun.

The celebration was capped by the presentation of a plaque to the 106th Precinct’s Auxiliary force, one of the largest and busiest in the five boroughs. Last year, its 101 members served more than 16,000 hours – the

most by any APO force in the department.

“They’re out here providing extra visible patrols that creates that omnipresence in the community,” Capt. Brian Bohannon, precinct commander, told The Forum. “Again, it’s an all-volunteer force; so I commend them for their service.”

Howard Beach-Lindenwood Civic President Joann Ariola noted that the 106th Precinct’s APOs are especially important – now more than ever.

“There are not many commands that can boast a volunteer force that would commit 16,000 hours to patrolling a community,” she said. “That’s why it upsets me to hear groups that purport to patrol, but have nothing to back it up.”

Vetrano Family to Host First-Anniversary Memorial Walk for Karina

By Michael V. Cusenza Cathie and Phil Vetrano on Wednesday evening were set to host a first-anniversary walk in honor of the memory of their daughter, Karina, who was killed as she jogged alone on a park trail near her Howard Beach home on Aug. 2, 2016.

“Residents of Howard Beach and surrounding communities – Join us on August 2nd, 2017 for our first anniversary walk dedicated to our angel Karina Vetrano, who was horrifically murdered in her hometown of Howard Beach,” reads the e-flyer heralding the event. “Meet at 6:30 p.m. at 165th Ave and 85th Street. Walk begins at 7 p.m. down 83rd to St. Helen’s, where we will have a moment of silence and prayer. Come together as a community and show that we do not stand for violence.”

On Wednesday morning, Phil Vetrano posted a message to the Karina Vetrano Memorial Reward Fund page on the GoFundMe site.

“As you all know it’s been a year since my baby girl was murdered by that filth, that loser animal.

But this post is about giving thanks. I want to personally thank all of you that have been there with support, the list is too long to mention individuals but I need to thank my family for staying so

close, Dorothy, whose undying friendship has been a comfort. Robert who has shown me there is life after death. And most of all the people of Howard Beach. I’ve been asked many times how has the community been with their support. My answer to them is: A community is a place where different people live together. Howard Beach is not a community, it is a neighborhood. The difference is a neighborhood is where everyone knows each other, where everyone knows your name and looks out for each other. In April, a grand jury returned a 13-count indictment charging Chanel Lewis, 21, with murder and sexual abuse in the death of Karina Vetrano.

According to the charges, Vetrano, 30, was jogging alone in Spring Creek Park in Howard Beach at approximately 6 p.m. on Aug. 2, when she was attacked by Lewis who sexually abused and strangled her. Vetrano’s body was discovered by her father and the police later that day lying in a marshy area, approximately 15 feet from a trail near 161st Avenue and 78th Street in the federal park.

Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan DAs Announce Dismissal of Nearly 700K Open Summons Warrants

By Forum Staff Four City district attorneys recently announced the unprecedented dismissal of nearly 700,000 summons warrants that are 10 years or older.

The warrants, which will be vacated in the next few weeks, were issued for failure to pay a ticket for a minor infraction, subjecting individuals to arrest as well as carrying other negative consequences, according to the chief prosecutors of Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan.

Approximately 100,000 warrants will be dismissed in Queens; 143,000 in Brooklyn; 166,000 in the Bronx; and 240,000 in Man-

hattan.

“The prosecution of thousands of 10-yearold and older summons part cases would pose serious factual and legal challenges. The NYPD has vetted the list and excluded the most flagrant violators who may still be prosecuted if apprehended,” said Queens DA Richard Brown. “We believe the people of Queens County will be better served by focusing our resources on more serious offenses.”

According to the district attorneys, the dismissals pose no risk to public safety as those individuals whose warrants are being vacated have not been arrested in the past 10 years or their warrants would have been triggered. The warrants stem from summonses issued for mi-

nor infractions such as riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, drinking beer in public, disorderly conduct, and being in a park after dark.

There are approximately 1.5 million open summons warrants citywide. These summons warrants, when left unresolved, subject those who have them to an automatic arrest when questioned by police on the street or during a traffic stop. They may also impede one’s ability to apply for citizenship, to secure employment or obtain public housing, and subject undocumented immigrants to deportation, the DAs noted.

Peralta Touts Bill to Provide Financial Assistance to Families of First Responders Killed in Line of Duty

By Forum Staff State Sen. Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst) on Thursday introduced legislation that would provide financial assistance to the spouse and/or dependents of police officers, firefighters and emergency medical services personnel killed in the line of duty.

The idea for the ‘Familia bill’ stems from the brutal killing of Det. Miosotis Familia last month.

The proposed law would establish the Police Officer, Firefighter, and Emergency Medical Services Family Housing Fund, which will provide up to $1,000 per month to help offset rent or mortgage payments for eligible families. The legislation intends to award monthly payments – up to a maximum of 10 years – to survivors of fallen public protection members for their housing expenses.

“First responders risk their lives on a daily basis to protect and assist us in case of an emergency. When tragedy strikes them, we must ensure we take care of the survivors of our fallen heroes by providing them with additional benefits. Under the ‘Familia Bill,’ family members of officers, firefighters and emergency medical servic-

es officers can breathe easily knowing that they will be able to take care of their housing financial obligations,” Peralta said. “The Police Officer, Firefighter, and Emergency Medical Services Family Housing Fund will supplement the forms of assistance already received by the family members of fallen

heroes, including pension benefits and life insurance payments. It is a gap in benefits where family members end up turning, at times, to private and nonprofits organizations with no guarantees, potentially leaving victims’ loved ones with no safety net.”

According to Peralta’s office, the State

will appropriate $10 million to the Police Officer, Firefighter, and Emergency Medical Services Family Housing Fund, to be administered by the State comptroller.

“When police officers, firefighters or EMTs die protecting their fellow New Yorkers, their families are left with a double burden: the pain of losing a wife, husband, mother or father, and the practical challenge of carrying on without their loved one’s financial support,” said Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch.

“We applaud Senator Peralta for proposing legislation that will provide state-funded housing assistance to the families of first responders killed in the line of duty. This bill is a good first step towards repaying our sacred debt to the families of the fallen.”

Uniformed Firefighters Association President Gerard Fitzgerald added, “When a first responder dies in the line of duty, it is the family that suffers the most. This legislation would assist those families in need and provide a financial level of comfort. We support Senator Jose Peralta for sponsoring this bill as it would help our firefighters and the many brave brothers and sisters who put their lives on the line for our communities every day.”

EDITORIAL Aug. 2, 2016: a date that changed our world.

The battered, lifeless body of a beloved young woman was discovered by her own father lying in what would be her marshy grave inside Spring Creek Park; the details of Phil Vetrano’s daughter’s demise almost too heinous to comprehend.

On Aug. 2, 2016, Karina Vetrano, 30, was beaten, strangled, and sexually assaulted on her daily run inside the federal green space.

“For many months, there was a profound sense of sorrow and grief that swept over not only Howard Beach, but all of New York,” recalled City Councilman Eric Ulrich.

In the days after this unspeakable tragedy, we all learned of the special soul who offered so much to the world – animal advocate; prolific poet and lover of the written word; runner; speech pathologist. All of that snuffed out in a matter of moments, in such a vicious manner, by something that could not be classified as human.

The six months that followed seemed to last six years.

Then, in February, thanks in large part to the work of a City detective who calls Howard Beach home and couldn’t fathom giving up, some good news. Finally.

Lt. John Russo spent six months poring over records until a person of interest eventually emerged. With this new lead, detectives were able to obtain a DNA sample, linking East New York resident Chanel Lewis to the

TRIUMPH OUT OF TRAGEDY degree murder, two counts of first-degree

murder.

“Karina’s picture was a picture my family and I saw in every store we went into [and] every block we drove down,” Russo said. “We were constantly reminded, just being in the neighborhood, of this unsolved murder. I’ve met people that I didn’t know telling me that they were nervous about letting their children out, and now that the case is solved, it’s a little more comfort for everyone.”

Lewis was subsequently indicted in April on four counts of first-degree murder, five counts of second-

aggravated sexual abuse and two counts of first-degree sexual abuse. He has pleaded not guilty.

In the past 365 days, many positives have emerged like a phoenix from the ashes of this tragedy: More than $300,000 has been raised through several channels. In April, Karina’s alma mater, Archbishop Molloy High School, established a scholarship in her name “to help send deserving young women to Molloy in her memory.”

In June, the Briarwood school held the first annual “Walk/Run for Karina,” with all proceeds going to benefit the Karina Vetrano Memorial Scholarship.

Also this past June, thanks to a grassroots push led by the Vetrano family and community leaders, the New York State Commission on Forensic Science on Friday voted to approve Familial DNA Searching.

“This is a monumental accomplishment,” Phil Vetrano noted. “It’s unheard-of and unprecedented that this could possibly happen in five months.

This will be a tremendous tool for law enforcement and for justice. And it’s only because of Karina. Without her driving us forward, this never would have happened.”

Only because of Karina. All of these accomplishments. Life after death.
