or the second time in two weeks, School Committee Member-at-Large Lester McLaughlin made a motion to “reconvene [the] Superintendent Search Committee to consider all candidates,” and for the second time it did not pass.

Neither interim Superintendent of Schools Janice Gauthier nor Assistant Superintendent of Business Affairs Charles Obremski were given the opportunity to apply for the position. Gauthier has been in the district for 49 years and Obremski has been in the district for 32 years.

McLaughlin originally made his motion during the School Committee’s December 2 meeting, saying internal candidates should have been considered during the search.

“I’m upset that people who’ve spent a lifetime making the Everett Public School system what it is never got a shot,” he said at that meeting, adding that none of the four superintendent finalists have experience leading a school district.

Ward 3 Member Frank Parker said there was no wrongdoing on the part of the Search Committee or the School Committee. “Let’s be clear, every candidate was considered,” he said.

Winter “flowerbomb” aims to surprise and delight bus line commuters

n concert with BostonBRT, city officials recently unveiled the winter “flowerbomb,” a brilliant floral display at the School Street bus stop on Broadway.

“We’re just trying to show people that it’s good to ride the bus; it’s not a bad thing,” Mayor Caro DeMaria said during the December 18 event. “It’s important that we not only prioritize but really celebrate our

buses and the people who ride them.”

Constructed by Krissy Price of Pollen Floral Design in Boston, the arrangement consists of a “lush tapestry of dried florals and birch branches, all sprinkled with LED ‘twinkle fairy lights.’”

The ultimate goal is to create the region’s first Gold Standard Bus Rapid Transit corridor, which would feature enclosed bus stops. The installation of permanent level-boarding

“Riders deserve the basics of comfort and shelter, but we can go bigger and bolder to transform the simple bus stop into a truly beautiful place to be, even in the wintertime,” said Mary Skelton Roberts, co-director of climate at the Barr Foundation. “This is about getting people to think differently about buses; it’s not just about getting to a destination.

If we can bring joy to people – we love that idea.”

Adrian Gill of Ad Hoc Industries said flowers are a “universal sign of giving.”

“At this time of year as we continue to consider the experience of bus riders, the timing is just right,” he said. “It’s not only about the metrics in public transportation, it’s about the people. Why not make the bus stop a beautiful place to wait?”

There are approximately 10,000 riders who take the bus from Broadway every day. Therefore, city officials installed bus-only travel lines to alleviate congestion during rush hour. This has since proven to reduce travel time from Everett Square to downtown Boston by 20 percent.

“We are going to find a superintendent who is from outside this district; any change to that will be over my dead body,” Abruzzese said during the forum.

However, Abruzzese denied making that statement. “What I stated was would I support someone that was not recommended by the Search Committee; my answer was ‘over my dead body,’” said Abruzzese.

Unlike two weeks earlier, McLaughlin’s motion was not seconded; therefore a vote was not needed as the motion died on the floor.

Looking ahead to the New Year, Gold-Boots said the coalition will turn its attention to the $1.5 billion Student Opportunity Act, which was signed into law by Governor Charlie Baker last month. She said the coalition’s objective will be to ensure that all stakeholders of the Everett Public Schools have the chance to give input on how those funds are used.

Currently, Everett is expected to receive at least $19 million from the Student Opportunity Act.

he Everett Kiwanis concluded an amazing year of service on Tuesday with its Angel Tree Project where the club donated a total of $2,550 in $25 gift cards (102 cards) to the City of Everett Department of Human Services to be distributed to teens ages 12-16 years old and $500 in $25 gift cards to the Director of Guidance

embers of the Builders Club and other students at the Keverian School worked with the Malden YMCA to donate food to 100 low-income families last Thursday afternoon. “ The administration and staff at the school have worked closely with community members and the Malden Y to collaborate to make sure our students and families have all the resources they need,” Assistant Principal Janet Taylor said. “The Y supplied fresh produce, eggs, canned goods, rice and fresh fruit.”

Teachers collect toys for Portal To Hope

nder the leadership of teachers MaryBeth Benedetto and Nelda O’Neill, the faculty and staff of the Madeline English School collected an impressive array of toys and games for the organization Portal To Hope (PTH). The effort generated an eclectic range of playthings for elementary- and middle school-aged children. The donations were arranged in an artistic display in the school lobby on Thursday, December 12 before they were collected by representatives from PTH, a nonprofit organization committed to helping victims of domestic violence that serves the communities of Everett, Lynn, Malden, Medford and Winthrop.

tem to your tap. The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) and the Everett Department of Public Works perform thousands of tests each year to ensure Everett’s water is safe and of the highest quality.

However, lead in drinking water continues to be a concern. The MWRA has been below the lead action level system-wide for many years now, but there are still many lead service lines within MWRA member communities, including in Everett. Service lines are the pipes that connect the water main in the street with the pipes in a home. Lead was widely used in service lines until 1944, and lead is common in many of the older cities and towns in Massachusetts. Homeowners and the

cities have replaced many lead service lines, but some remain.

Over time, lead from pipes can leach into drinking water.

The MWRA has developed a $100 million, zero-interest loan program to help communities remove these lead service lines, and Everett has implemented Phase 1 of a Lead Services Replacement Project. The Water Department focused on the neighborhoods west of Main Street and north of Waters Avenue, replacing service lines at approximately 150 properties with known or suspected lead water services.

Per Everett Water Department Rules and Regulations, service lines on private property are the responsibility of the property owner and not the responsibility of the City of Everett; however, to resolve potential

health concerns, the City continues to fund the entire cost to replace the affected water service lines, the typical cost of which is $5,000 to $7,000 per service.

Preliminary design of Phase 2 is already underway, with Tata & Howard, Inc. providing engineering services to the City as was the case during Phase 1. Construction of Phase 2 is anticipated to take place in 2020. The City is making a proactive effort to aid the community at large through a systematic, area-by-area approach to replacing suspected lead service lines.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stable housing, employment and access to medical treatment are all significant components of successful reentry,â&#x20AC;? said Koutoujian. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All of these are more diďŹ&#x192;cult, if not impossible, to gain and sustain without government-issued ID. Helping the men in our custody obtain this necessary tool prior to release will better position them for success. I want to thank Ms. Werst and Sen. Eldridge for their leadership and collaboration.â&#x20AC;?

As part of the MSO eďŹ&#x20AC;ort, a staff member has been designated to assist eligible, sentenced individuals without a valid ID to work with the Registry of Motor Vehicles to com-

plete and process paperwork prior to release. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Seven years ago, I began working with Dot Werst to expand her Boston Share Network State ID program from homeless shelters, to expand it to inmates upon being released from state prison,â&#x20AC;? said Eldridge. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m proud and deeply appreciative of SheriďŹ&#x20AC; Peter Koutoujian for expanding the Prisoner ID program to the Middlesex County House of Correction. This expansion would not have been possible without the persistence and compassion of Dot Werst, and we were pleased to visit the county jail in Billerica, to see the program in action.â&#x20AC;?

Comedian Wayne Brady to perform at Encore Boston Harbor Jan. 19 A

five-time Emmy Award winner and Grammy nominee, Wayne Brady, will perform at Encore Boston Harbor on Sunday, January 19. Tickets are now on sale for the resort’s first ever comedy show.

Cameron Couto newest wave in Tide hockey C

ameron Couto put on skates at the age of four and hasn’t taken them off since – he sleeps, eats and breathes hockey.

The dynamic freshman – along with a few other freshman members of this year’s Crimson Tide team – hopes to build a new era in Tide hockey history and bring the Tide back to the playoffs and atop the standings. There will no doubt be a learning curve for the young team; however, one thing they promised to show everyone is that they will play

their hearts out each and every game for the city of Everett. Win or lose, they will be in every game. They have already proven to be a resilient team as evidenced by their opening game: Trailing 3-0 going into the third period, the Tide rallied for four goals to win their first game of the season. During the game, Couto was on the ice for nearly 30 minutes, leading the pop unit and closing out the game with a three-minute shift on defense to help secure the victory.

Everett college student completes intensive research project

ORCESTER – Isaiah Aridou of Everett, a member of the class of 2021 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, was part of a student team that recently completed an intense, hands-on research project in Boston. The project was titled An Assessment of the

Preference of Urban Residents for Green Space. In their project summary, the students wrote: “The goal of our project was to identify types of green space that urban residents prefer in their communities and how their preferences can promote climate change resiliency.”

T How to Manage a Loved One’s Social Media Afterlife Dear Savvy Senior, How do I go about changing or canceling a person’s social media accounts when they die? My sister passed away several months ago and her social media accounts are still active.

Inquiring Sister Dear Inquiring, I’m sorry for your loss. This a question that’s become more frequent in recent years as most Americans have participated on some type of social media platform. Here’s a rundown of how you can change or cancel some different social media accounts after a loved one dies.

Facebook Let’s start with the biggest and most frequently used social media platform on the Web today. When someone with a Facebook profile dies, there are two different things someone with authority over their account can do. You can either “memorialize” it or “delete” it.

A memorialized account serves as a place where friends and family can share stories, photos or memories to celebrate the deceased person’s life, with the word “Remembering” shown next to the deceased person’s name. Once an account is memorialized, content the person shared is still visible on Facebook to the audience it was originally shared with, however, the user’s profile will not show up in public spaces such as people you may know, ads or birthday reminders.

If you don’t wish to memorialize your sister’s profile, you can also have her account permanently deleted from Facebook.

Facebook allows users (when they’re alive) to choose a “legacy contact,” which is a person chosen to look after their account once they’ve passed away, or users can request to have their account permanently deleted after they die. (To do either of these tasks, click on “Settings” on the top right of Facebook, then click on “General” on the left-side menu and then on “Manage Account.”)

If your sister didn’t set up a legacy contact before she passed, you can submit a memorialization request at Facebook.com/help – type in “How do I report a deceased person on Facebook that needs to be memorialized?” in

the search bar. You’ll be asked to provide proof of death by providing a copy of either an obituary, death certificate or memorial card.

Or, if you would rather have her account deleted go to Facebook.com/help, and type in “How do I request the removal of a deceased family member’s Facebook account?” This also requires proof of death plus verification that you’re an immediate family member or executor of the account holder.

Instagram Instagram’s policy on a deceased users’ account is similar to its parent company, Facebook. A deceased users’ account can either be memorialized or re moved, which you can request at Help.Instagram. com/264154560391256.

Like Facebook, to memorialize an Instagram account requires proof of death, but to remove an account you’ll also need to provide verification that you’re an immediate family member.

Twitter If your sister was a Twitter user, Twitter will work with anyone who is authorized to act on behalf of her estate, or with a verified immediate family member to have an account deactivated. To request the removal of your sister’s account, go to Help.Twitter. com/forms/privacy.

After you submit your request, Twitter will email you with instructions for providing more details, including information about the deceased, a copy of your ID, and a copy of the deceased’s death certificate.

LinkedIn If your sister also had a LinkedIn profile, the only option is to delete her account.

Nonprofit organizations as well as city-run programs that are entirely for public benefit (e.g., libraries, historical societies, youth enrichment programs) are eligible to apply.

“In 2019, the Foundation Trust provided over $300,000 in grants and scholarships to local communities,” said Foundation Trust Executive Director

Dr. Joseph Spinazzola. “We’re thrilled to expand our geographic reach to include Everett in 2020 and can’t wait to see the impactful programs that are being planned for the coming year.”

Foundation Trust grants can support program infrastructure, operations, initiative seeding, program expansion or evaluation in one or more of the Foundation Trust funding tracks: overcoming trauma and adversity, empowering atrisk youths and communities, restoring dignity and quality of care for adults living with

chronic conditions, and advancing inclusivity in the arts.

The Foundation Trust was established to “fill the gaps” left by larger foundations. By supporting the important ongoing work of local small to medium-sized nonprofit organizations, the Foundation Trust aims to enhance individual well-being and community development.

Interested nonprofit organizations and municipal-run programs in Everett are invited to submit Letters of Inquiry through Thursday, March 5, 2020.

Mayor designates December Fine-Free Month Everett public libraries will waive fees

M

ayor Carlo DeMaria is happy to announce that the City of Everett is partnering with Everett Public Libraries to waive all fees for the month of December.

“We want residents of all ages to use and enjoy the library. We all are forgetful sometimes, but that’s ok,” said DeMaria. “I hope people will take advantage of this rare opportunity to clear their ac-

counts and return to the library.”

Residents are encouraged to bring in items they have checked out but were unable to return on time. The library will eliminate all fines for that item. We are asking patrons to bring in those long overdue books, CDs, DVDs and other item, even if they have been overdue for months, weeks or years. There are some excep-

tions. Fees for damaged or lost items will not be waived.

The goal of this amnesty month is to both get overdue materials back into the Library and to foster community goodwill. Mark your calendar – you will not want to miss this opportunity to clear your account. If this month produces a strong turnout, the mayor may elect to declare another fine-free month in the future.

FREEZE ON WITHDRAWALS I

t is always a concern these days when it comes to elder financial abuse. Effective February of 2018, FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) promulgated Rule 2165 in order to help protect seniors.

Under this Rule, a Broker Dealer has the right to place a hold on the withdrawal of funds or securities from certain client accounts under certain circumstances. This Rule applies to accounts of “specified adults”- clients age 65 and older, or individuals 18 or older who the Broker Dealer reasonably believes have a mental or physical impairment that renders

the individual unable to protect his or her own interests.

A member firm has the right to place a hold on the withdrawal if the firm reasonably believes that financial exploitation of the specified adult has occurred, is occurring, has been attempted, or will be attempted.

The member firm has two business days to notify the following: 1. All authorized parties on the account (unless a party is unavailable or the member firm believes the party is the one involved in the financial exploitation; and 2. The trusted contact person as stated on the original application paperwork (unless the trusted contact person is unavailable or the broker-dealer reasonably believes he or she is involved in the exploitation).

The broker dealer must immediately initiate an inter-

nal review of the facts that caused the member firm to believe that there is (or will be) financial exploitation. The temporary hold on the withdrawal would only be good for 15 days. Only a court or regulator could increase the length of the hold.

There are many red flags that financial advisors should take seriously such as sudden, atypical or unexplained withdrawals, abrupt changes to one’s Will, Trust or Durable Power of Attorney, changes in beneficiary designations on insurance policies or IRA accounts, unusual or first-time wire transfers, especially to foreign countries, increasing lack of contact with, and lack of interest in the outside world, concern or confusion about missing funds in an account, etc.

As an elder law attorney and financial advisor, I have

seen plenty of these situations over the years. It is important to take action if any of these types of irregularities are occurring. I had one of my elderly clients several years ago wire over $150,000 to a foreign bank account

in Singapore. The money of course is gone. Bank employees are now trained to notify senior bank officials if there are any unusual transactions being conducted by any of its more vulnerable account owners.
