n an unexpected turn of events, Janice Gauthier, former Interim Superintendent of Schools, recently informed the School Committee that she will be leaving the district on March 19 after nearly five decades as an Everett educator. However, on February 29, Gauthier had accepted the role of senior advisor to new Superintendent Priya Tahiliani. Seventy-two hours later, Gauthier submitted her resignation letter. She also chose to use 12 vacation days, which will carry her until March 18 – one day prior to her resignation date. School Committee Vice Chairman Frank Parker was one of the many individuals who were taken aback by Gauthier’s abrupt decision. “I was really shocked with the news; I was completely taken by surprise,” he said. “Call it retirement, call it resigning –she quit.” In her letter, Gauthier said she was “constructively eliminated” from her prior position as the district’s curriculum director. In addition, Gauthier has also claimed discrimination, saying she was “denied equal consideration” during the su-

perintendent search process. Gauthier voiced her level of displeasure after the four superintendent finalists were announced during the School Committee meeting on November 13, 2019. “I stepped up when this city needed somebody the most and I couldn’t get an interview,” she said. “Forty-nine years in this district and I couldn’t get an interview, that’s what hurts.”
