uildings Commissioner Rick Chandler announced the upcoming start of the Department’s annual No-Penalty Deck and Retaining Wall Inspection Program, a citywide initiative running between May 15th to June 25th, which allows New Yorkers to request a free inspection of their decks, porches, and retaining walls.

Over time, weather and shifting of soil can cause these structures to weaken, deteriorate or lean. This program gives homeowners the opportunity to ensure these structures are safe before a dangerous deck accident or costly retaining wall failure occurs. If repairs are needed, and the conditions found do not pose an immediate safety hazard to property owners, the Department will withhold issuing any viola-

tions to allow property owners sufficient time to make corrective repairs.

“The Department has already seen a number of deck and retaining wall failures this year, and this program provides the opportunity for homeowners to ensure their property is structurally sound,” said Buildings Commissioner Rick Chandler. “Failing to maintain decks, porches or retaining walls can result in accidents, damage to buildings, and excessive repair costs for homeowners.”

Beginning May 15, property owners can request a free inspection of their decks, porches, or retaining walls to ensure they are structurally sound and in compliance with all City regulations by calling 311. During the assessment, inspectors will check for poten-

tially dangerous conditions, such as cracking, rotting, bulging, leaning and other warning signs that can lead to potential structural failure.

The No-Penalty Retaining Wall Inspection Program was first launched in 2005, and later building upon the success of the initiative, the Deck and Porch Inspection Program was created in 2010. The Department has performed over 500 inspections since the launch of these initiatives, preventing many structural failures and costly repairs for homeowners.

By law, homeowners are required to maintain their decks, porches, and retaining walls in a safe and code compliant manner at all times. New Yorkers are encouraged to call 311 to report non-compliant conditions

Brewer Announced 312 Community Board appointments, including 81 new members

anhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer announced this year’s slate of appointments to Manhattan’s 12 Community Boards. The appointments took effect earlier this month and include 81 new members, more than a quarter of the 312 appointments.

“Manhattan’s community boards are at the center of negotiations and decisions on the size and character of new real estate development, how our parks and public spaces are used and cared for, and what government can do for our neighborhoods,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “As our applicant pool continues to grow,

we will keep striving to build Community Boards that are fully reflective of our neighborhoods.”

Applications for Community Board membership from those not currently serving increased by 12 percent in 2016, while total applications increased by 9 percent.

round of appointments, more than 20 percent of Community Board members identify as African-American or black, 16 percent identify as Latino or Hispanic, and nearly 4 percent identify as Asian or Pacific Islander.

Community Board members reflect a diverse set of career paths as well. 28 percent of Community Board members report they are self-employed and nearly 10 percent are business owners, while private sector workers (19 percent), nonprofit employees (16 percent), city government workers (12 percent), and retirees (14 percent) each make up a significant chunk of the boards’ membership.

everal prospective first time home buyers have expressed their discouragement over the lack of available affordable housing in Harlem. They are ready to give up on their dream of becoming a homeowner because the process is too stressful. I have stated during my workshops that the home buying process is very difficult. The statistical data points out that only about 10% of those wanting to buy a home will be able to successfully complete the process.

However, if you have a good plan in place and follow the steps that are taught in the home buying seminar, you can achieve your dream of becoming a homeowner. Here are some suggestions to assist you:

(1) Be ready when an opportunity becomes available. You must have your money saved.

You will be able to get a jump on the competition if you already have a pre-approval from your lender. Real estate agents will know you are serious about completing the process.

(2) Maintain a healthy credit score. Aim for having your score over 700. Use your credit wisely.

Keep your balance below 30% of the maximum limits. Remember lenders want to see 24 month clean credit history with at least three-tofour active accounts. Some lenders will use non-traditional credit such as rent receipts, utility bills etc.

(3) Expand your search. If you are not finding available affordable properties within the Harlem community, you may

THE MEETING is a fictional Harlem story and takes place in Harlem’s historic Theresa Hotel where Malcolm X and his body guard Rashad meet Dr. King be-

fore Malcolm X’s fateful assassination in Harlem’s Audubon Ballroom.

Actors Daniel Carlton is Malcolm X, Michael Green is Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr, and Ron Wilkes as Rashad gave adrenalin fueled performances. The chemistry between the actors was authentic and captivating.

The actors skillfully portrayed two legendary leaders on stage. Malcolm and Martin were iconic personalities who were known to millions around the world and Carlton and Green captured the essence of these two leaders.

MetroPlus Health Plan Hosts One Patient, One Provider, One Network, OneCity Health Luncheon

n Thursday, April 14, MetroPlus Health Plan hosted a luncheon for Health & Hospital’s One City/Health Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program. MetroPlus invited DSRIP partners to an informational luncheon with the theme, One Patient, One Provider, One Network at the New York Academy of Medicine, bringing together Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and providers that make up the partnership of the OneCity Health organizations.

MetroPlus discussed their health insurance options as well as their ongoing and extensive community programs.

One of DSRIP’s principal objectives is to establish a continuum of care for all New Yorkers through community collaborations and partnerships. The luncheon gave the opportunity for partnership members to meet, greet, network, strategize and learn about MetroPlus products, services and different ways MetroPlus can collaborate with OneCity Health community partners. Over 100 guests from DSRIP partner

For rescue-animal advocate Cheryl Smith, who founded a non-profit that assists pets in need, the May observance is a time to recognize many of the things that really matter in life.

May is Asthma Awareness Month Mount Sinai Doctors Offer Tips on Staying Healthy

F

or those with asthma, springtime brings an increase in symptoms, making awareness of symptom triggers and health risk factors particularly crucial. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 25 million or 8% of the US population suffer from asthma. The cost associated with care and absences from work due to illness is over $56 billion each year. A diagnosis of asthma can lead to limited physical activity, absences from work or school, and frequent emergency room visits.

“Asthma is a lifelong disease that causes wheez-

ing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing,” said Linda Rogers, MD, Associate Professor of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Director of the Clinical Asthma Program at Mount Sinai-National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute. “While there is no cure for asthma, a personalized care plan including appropriate medications and education on triggers and proper care techniques can prevent attacks from occurring, helping patients lead a full and active life.”

Ways Students Can Use Summer Vacation to Prepare for the Future

s your family thinking about the skills and experience your child needs for college and future success? Yet, more than half of middle level students haven’t started prepping for college, according to statistics from the National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS).

Personal Finance Gifts for the New Graduate

ollege graduation season is upon us.

How about a gift that will really mean something to a student in your life?

The way I see it, the best graduation gift isn’t just a check in an envelope – it’s coming up with a few great, memorable ideas to help a new grad get a great financial start in life. At a time when money skills for young adults have never been more important, consider the following: Buy them a session (or more) with a money coach.

If you already work with a qualified financial planner or professional tax preparer,

why not pay for a session or two for the new grad to help them work out their first budget as a working adult? Take the time to talk with the professional about specific financial issues the grad will need to address as well as their first, formal budget setup if they’ve never budgeted before.

Help them get a start on their retirement savings.

Again, most of these gift ideas can come from one person or a group throwing in cash contributions.

Consider taking your new grad out to open a Roth IRA (https://www.irs.gov/ Retirement-Plans/RothIRAs) or Traditional IRA

(https://www.irs.gov/Retirement-Plans/Traditional-IRAs). Early retirement investing is one of the most important lessons any new college grad can learn.

If they’re continuing school, create a 529 plan or contribute to an existing one. Many new college graduates return to school to start a master’s degree or other advanced training. If such an idea makes sense for your finances, consider opening or contributing to a 529 college savings plan (https://www.irs.gov/ uac/529-Plans:-Questionsand-Answers) to support their continuing education.

ings plan set up by a state or educational institution that offers tax advantages and potentially other incentives to make it easier to save for college and other post-secondary training for a designated beneficiary, such as a child or grandchild. A friend or a relative can set one up and name anyone as a beneficiary – the new grad, another relative, even yourself – and there are no income restrictions on doing so.

You’ll also be free to change the beneficiary if necessary.

One suggestion – before you act, talk it over with the new grad or his or her family members to make sure this is the best approach for

helping with their future education.

If your new grad loves a company, consider buying them a few shares. Again, evaluate this decision against your own finances and parental opinion, but if there is a particular company the new grad has bought merchandise from or otherwise has taken a great interest in, consider going with them to a brokerage to buy a few shares in the company. Make it a lesson not only in the purchase process, but in the valuation, tax and ownership issues anyone has to deal with as a long-term shareholder.

Sacred Commerce

hile I was recuperating in a rehab facility a few weeks ago from an injury, a friend Johnanne Winchester suggested that I read a book titled “Sacred Commerce” by Ayman Sawaf and Rowan Gabrielle. Johnanne’s mission is to create a global awareness that health, prosperity and the pursuit of happiness are gifts that should not be limited to just a few in the world, but can be realized by greater numbers in the world populations.

I expressed my appre-

ciation for the work that Johnanne does with the United Nations and other groups that focus on world issues. I also explained that I had a greater concern with similar issues faced by children and families who live in Harlem and other urban communities in America.

Johnanne suggested the understanding and practice of sacred commerce can be used to address both local and global issues.

“Sacred commerce is the “party-cipation” of the community in exchange of information, goods, and services that contributes to the revealing of

the divine (beauty, goodness, and truth) in all and where spirituality is the bottom line,” according to the research of Sawaf and Gabrielle. Profit is the only bottom line in commerce as we know it today. There are four bottom lines in sacred commerce, they are: people, planet, profit and spirituality.

Sacred commerce is not a new age concept.

Its practice can be traced back to ancient Egypt around 1500BC where a Merchant Priesthood was developed under the reign of Queen Hatshepsut to practice and teach it. Similar to the wisdom in the seven principles of

the Kybalion (see www. theartofwarogers.info) the sacred commerce concept has been kept from the masses. Moving out of Egypt and carried to the East by the prophet Mohammad into Europe by the Knights Templar and preserved by the Freemasons for centuries.

As we continue our journey of human development many of the secrets and concepts of our past have started to reappear to guide us into the future. The ancient concept of reintroducing spirituality into commerce, creating goods and services not only for self-profit, but to the bene-

fit of people and the planet will again be taught to the masses by a new cadre of merchant priests. I believe the positive reinforcement of this new way of doing business will allow a greater number of people to experience the gift of abundance.

The ability to lift people out of poverty and the needs of survival is the goal of sacred commerce.

The gift of abundance is having access to resources you need; at the time you need them. It has nothing to do with stockpiling money or assets. Abundance can then open other avenues of expression such as positive relation-

ships, creativity, and the pursuit of happiness and spirituality; as stated in the Sawaf/Gabrielle book.

The sacred commerce concept my seem unrealistic in today’s marketplace but keep in mind it was the concept that built the foundation of commerce as we know it today. It has taken a back seat to greed, power and material passion. Times are changing, if you are reading this perhaps you have been selected to become a merchant priest that will learn to use and teach others the ancient concept of bring spirituality back into commerce for the betterment of humankind.

Celebrating Bonds

C

elebrations always bring relationships to mind. On Mother’s Day I took a walk and I couldn’t help but notice people and their groupings. There were, of course mothers and their children, husbands and significant others.

So, I sat down on a bench to people watch and as folks walked by I could catch snippets of their conversations and “dissect” each group as they passed. One such group consisted of two

couples, “banker type” husbands, their wives, children and pets. The husbands were pushing the strollers and talking shop. Part of the conversation centered on bonds—fixed income securities with fixed interest. People who typically buy bonds want protection of their principal investment, security, guarantees and consistency . . . all stable elements. It was the word “bonds” that caught my attention because it summed up Mother’s Day! The groups of people were re-enforcing their bonds with their moms.

Although the bonds are emotional, everyone

was in a sense protecting their investment of love, time and commitment.

We tend to look for security within our family unit. Guarantees are hard to come by these days; so nurturing and maintaining our bonds is important to us. By consistently providing our own form of fixed interest, we keep our principal intact, allowing us to build upon the future of the bond. The result: Security; which stabilizes us.

“Brown is the New White”

our vote matters.

At least that’s what they tell you, but you have your doubts. You’re ONE of millions of people who’ll go to the polls in November. You’re a raindrop in the sea, a needle in a voting haystack. But as you’ll see in “Brown is the New White” by Steve Phillips, you are more powerful than you think.

In 1968, the year Martin Luther King was assassinated, about 12 percent of the U.S. population comprised “people of color.” Forty years later, on the night that Barack Obama was elected president, 36 percent

of Americans were African American, Latino, Asian American, Arab American, or Native American.

While that still doesn’t sound like a very high number, Phillips says that, for a politician looking to win in 2016, those demographics belie an “equation that’s been hiding in plain sight”: add progressive White voters, and “ America has a progressive, multiracial majority right now…”

That’s good news for Democrats – the party most often favored by progressives and people of color – but it’s not the final word. Drawing a line from Selma to Obama’s

election, Phillips says that understanding the interests and histories of each individual group (including progressive Whites) is essential for forward movement, politically. It’s also important to know how those groups vote and the issues they care about, because if the “truth of the lives of the New American Majority” is ignored, “they will ignore you…” Phillips says.

Stirring things up, as he points out, are conservatives who actively court “communities of color” and Republicans who’ve shown that they’re trying to embrace new thinking.

Author Steve Phillips pulls together plenty of intriguing ideas, history, and cause-and-effect tales but too many stats, which often muddy his points.

He seems to go off-topic, sometimes slightly, but enough to cause me to stop and wonder where this was going. And yet,

what he says is compelling and impossible to ignore; to wit, we are on the verge of something that could be exciting, if we only coalesce.

To reach that point, there are suggestions here, some of which may be controversial and some of which will require serious work. Still, though this book is definitely on the heavy side, what you’ll eventually learn is meaningful, particularly in this election year. For anyone over 18, “Brown is the New White” could be a book that matters.

They need to cultivate “great cultural competence and expertise.” And they’ll have to “educate themselves about the realities of the lives of people of color.”

Jam-packed with statistics, numbers, and thoughts that whirl around the pages, ‘Brown is the New White” is interesting, but it’s not a book to finish in a weekend. There’s so much in-

PONDER THIS! Some Things to Learn from Noah’s Ark

T

he story of Noah and the Ark is known to Christians as biblical text and perhaps to others as folklore, a good yarn to tell. From the plot we read that Noah was both shocked and leery of God speaking to him about an oncoming heavy rain that would

engulf the entire world as he knew it. To make Noah’s concern even greater, no where do we read that he was a carpenter and in any way capable of taking on such a nautical endeavor.

Yet, in absolute obedience to God, Noah took on the command wholeheartedly and even engaged his sons to participate, much to their chagrin. Surely, Noah must have been a recipient of humiliation and insult. His commitment and daily diligence would have made him the joke of the community as they watched him build the

huge boat on dry land.

Through it all, Noah did as he was told and lo and behold, the ark was built to specific dimension, filled with family and paired species as directed and the rain did come.

Those who are familiar with the story know how it ends and inquiries have flourished for centuries long about where the ark landed and is it still somewhere to be found. Finding the ark to prove its validity may not be as important as giving thought to what we can learn from the story that is helpful to us in these present days.

is a purpose and a plan for your life. The ark was built by amateurs, but they didn’t give up.

An old story speaks great truth today. We may be going along hanging tough in the rough, but as we are going, we are growing and that is good. If you do not have faith in what you do, then what you do may be in vain.

I recently had a conversation with a mom who was frustrated by the many conflicting

reports about what’s healthy to eat and what’s not. It seems one minute, fish is good for the heart –but the next “you have to be careful about the mercury!”

Today whole wheat is healthy; tomorrow “wheat causes belly fat”, etc. Her attitude, and with good reason was, why try so hard to eat healthy if in the end, the “healthy choice” would be proven wrong. I finally asked her what she felt she was doing right with regards to her eating habits.

She mentioned how she loved eating salad on a daily basis, and then proceeded to tell me about the delicious bottled salad dressing she uses (which I knew contained ingredients neither she nor I could pronounce). Yet, I complemented her for eating more

salad but suggested she make homemade instead of store bought salad dressing most of which are filled with preservatives, unhealthy fats and lots of sodium. Before she could argue, I suggested she research online recipes for vinaigrettes with lime, sea salt and cilantro; creamy dressings made with avocado instead of buttermilk and blue cheese; spicy recipes with jalapeño, garlic and tomato. Her eyes lit up, “I can’t wait to try that!”

Donating blood helps save lives in the emergency room

Red Cross urges blood and platelet donation in recognition of Trauma Awareness Month 2,600 hospitals nationwide, including 87 throughout the New York-Penn Region.

“It’s the blood products on the shelves that helps save lives in an emergency,” said Nick Gehrig, communications director, Red Cross Blood Services.

“When seconds matter, having a readily available blood supply is critical to trauma patient care.”

When there is not time to determine a patient’s blood type, such as in trauma situations, type O negative blood and type AB plasma are what emergency personnel reach for because they can be given to patients with any blood

type. Less than 7 percent of the population has type O negative blood, and only about 4 percent of the population has type AB blood. Donors with these blood types are an important part of the trauma team and encouraged to donate as often as they are eligible.

Donors of all blood types are currently needed.

Blood donation appointments can be scheduled by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1800-733-2767).

Donated blood helped save Diana Heredia’s life

following a car accident.

Suffering from four broken ribs, a lacerated liver and a punctured lung, Heredia received about five units of blood. “I was in pretty bad shape – hospitalized for about 28 days,” she said.

“Ever since I’ve tried to recruit blood donors, have blood drives and give blood as much as possible.”

About donating blood or platelets A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required when checking in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds

and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. BP Adams Announced Adopt-A-Shelter Animal Day

rooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams announced that he will host Adopt-a-Shelter Animal Day at Marine Park on Saturday, April 30, with dogs and cats available for adoption and additional resources for pets and their owners. The event, organized in collaboration with the Animal Care Center of New York, Foster Dogs, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, and Rescue City Pet Adoption Center, allowed visitors to meet potential new members of their families and start the process of adoption. renew or purchase a dog license with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Borough President Adams was joined at the announcement by representatives of the partner organizations and four shelter dogs: Bruce, Buddha, Rosemary, and Zoey.

“How do we define our family?” said Borough President Adams.

“Our family includes more than our parents and our brothers and sisters. The family also includes the cats, the birds, the dogs, and our other pets. Owning a pet supports the development of children, teaching them to assume responsibility. I encourage Brooklynites and all New Yorkers to come out on Saturday to meet these shelters animals who will become loyal friends.”

of sweet, fun, beautiful animals in need of homes,” said Risa Weinstock, executive director of Animal Care Centers of NYC. “Helping them requires community support, and we’re so grateful to Borough President Adams for encouraging pet adoption--something that clearly benefits pets and people alike.”

“The Alliance for NYC’s Animals is delighted to be a part of Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams’ Adopt-A-Shelter Animal Day,” said Stephanie Mattera, spokesperson for the Alliance for NYC’s Animals. “Our adoption van will be onsite featuring cats from Brooklyn Animal Action, one of our 150 Alliance Participating Organizations. The Alliance is committed to saving the lives of NYC’s homeless animals. We

recognize that collaboration is essential to accomplishing this mission and that adoption events give animals the best chance of finding their forever homes. It’s a privilege to be a part of this wonderful event, and we thank Borough

Saliya is a beautiful woman that recounts her experiences growing up as the daughter of a nurse running a health care post in a mostly rural area in Zambia and how that life led her to immigrate to the US. Adaku is an intelligent young woman, quite satisfied with her new life in America, who begrudgingly looks back at her past in Malawi

where her father ran a lucrative coffin making business.

Both characters reveal their past regrets and current pains. Suitable for all ages.

New York City Department of Design and Construction Hosts 50 Kids for 2016 Take Your Child to Work Day

“Our STEAM initiative’s ‘Take Your

Child to Work Day’ is an excellent program because it connects the people who currently build the city to the future generation of public builders,” said DDC Commissioner Feniosky Peña-Mora.

“Our projects put an emphasis on community engagement, resiliency, sustainability, equity and healthy living. This program is a perfect way to connect our agency to the youth of the city in a way that

exposes them to the work that we do and lets them interact with the buildings they see in their daily routines.”

The DDC STEAM education initiative hosts programs for New York City youth yearround. Its Young Engineers Program, which delivers educational programming about engineering, architecture and construction, has taught over 200 New York City public school students in 6th and 7th grade about sustainable city planning and the built environment. Last year, STEAM hosted 42 children for Take Your Child to Work Day.

“Take Your Child to Work Day is a great opportunity to educate kids about their parents’ professions as well as expose them to ideas, designs, concepts and technologies they might not otherwise be exposed to in traditional school curriculums,” said Deputy Commissioner of Community Partnerships and STEAM Initiatives, Lee Llambelis. “While other kids might just be sitting in an office cubicle, we’re happy to bring interactive STEAM programming to the children that come to DDC’s office.”

n observance of national Take Your Child to Work Day, 50 kids filled the DDC’s office atrium on Thursday, April 28, to spend the day making large scale three-dimensional study models of DDC projects from across the five boroughs, including the Bronx Museum of Art, Central Park Precinct in Manhattan, Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn, Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island and the Queens Botanical Garden.
