Payday Loan Victims to be Compensated

anhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., announced the guilty pleas of CAREY VAUGHN BROWN, 57, as well as two companies he operated and controlled, CREDIT PAYMENT SERVICES, INC. (“CPS”) and MYCASHNOW.COM, INC. (“MYCASHNOW”), to Criminal Usury in the First Degree for engaging in a scheme to make multiple short-term, high-interest loans – known as “payday” loans – to Manhattan residents. As part of a plea agreement executed May 12, 2016, BROWN has already forfeited $3 million, and is bound by the terms of the agreement to pay an additional $6 million in forfeiture to victims. Under the terms set forth in a forfeiture order, a compensation fund will be set up by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office’s Asset Forfeiture Unit to compensate verified victims of BROWN’s payday lending scheme. BROWN is also required to perform 250 hours of community service under the plea agreement.

“Payday loans victimize

those least able to afford the exorbitant and completely unrealistic terms of those loans, and often result in a lifetime of debt and credit problems for the unfortunate borrowers,” said District Attorney Vance. “Recognizing just how much harm payday loans can bring, Google stated this week that it will no longer permit such advertisements on its website. The defendants in this case have admitted to engaging in a scheme to make usurious loans to New Yorkers. With these guilty pleas and the establishment of a compensation fund, we have taken a step toward righting the wrongs brought by some members of this exploitative industry.”

Payday loans are generally defined as loans of $1,000 or less that are typically intended to be repaid from a borrower’s next paycheck. These loans often carry interest rates exceeding 300 percent of the principal when calculated on an annual basis for the initial term of the loan. Borrowers are often unable to repay the loan after the first twoweek period. In such cases,

payday lenders routinely extend loans, charging new fees for the extensions.

Many borrowers end up paying double the amount of the principal loan or even more. In New York State, it is a crime for an unlicensed lender to charge more than 25 percent per annum interest on any loan less than $2.5 million.

As part of his guilty plea, BROWN admitted that, between 2001 and 2013, he owned, controlled, or was the final decision-maker for MYCASHNOW, an online payday lender that, at BROWN’s direction, made loans to customers featuring an annual percentage rate of well over 25 percent. These loans were made around the country, including to customers in New York. BROWN also admitted that, between 2001 and 2013, he owned, controlled, or was the final decision-maker for multiple companies, including CPS, ACH FEDERAL, LLC; CLOUDSWELL, INC., a/k/a BASENINE, a/k/a TERENINE; AREA 203 MARKETING, LLC; SUPPORT SEVEN,

LLC; MILLENNIUM FINANCIAL CONCEPTS, INC.; and, later, OWL’S NEST, LLC, all of which, at BROWN’s direction, actively supported MYCASHNOW in making payday loans to New York residents.

Co-defendants RONALD BEAVER, 57, JOANNA TEMPLE, 60, previously pleaded guilty to Attempted Criminal Usury in the Second Degree on December 14 and December 17, 2015, respectively, for their roles in the payday lending scheme. BEAVER served as the chief operating officer and TEMPLE served as legal counsel for BROWN’s payday lending business; SCENIC CITY LEGAL GROUP, P.C., a

company TEMPLE formed after deriving at least 90 percent of its business from BROWN’S payday organization, also pleaded guilty to Attempted Criminal Usury in the Second Degree.

Assistant District Attorneys Kevin Wilson and Julieta V. Lozano, Deputy Chief of the Major Economic Crimes Bureau, prosecuted this matter, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Chris Conroy, Chief of the Major Economic Crimes Bureau, and Executive Assistant District Attorney David Szuchman, Chief of the Investigation Division. Senior Investigators Matthew Winters and Veronica Rodriguez, Forensic

Accountant Investigator Francine Wexler of the Forensic Accounting and Financial Investigations Unit, Investigative Analyst Hyatt Mustefa, and former law fellow Katherine Gora assisted with the case. Assistant District Attorney Lynn Goodman, Chief of the Asset Forfeiture Unit, is handling the compensation plan funded by the forfeited proceeds.

District Attorney Vance thanked the New York State Attorney General’s Office, Special Agent Robert Akers of the U.S. Secret Service Chattanooga Regional Office, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee for their contributions to this case.

Chef Marcus Samuelson, CITI and "No Kid Hungry Presented a "Breakfast Party" at East Harlem School

arcus Samuelsson, world-renowned chef and owner of Harlem’s Red Rooster and Streetbird, along with Bravo television host Bevy Smith, and Jaynine Taylor, owner of NYC’s Best Dressed Cupcakes partnered with Citi and No Kid Hungry to present a “Breakfast Party” at East Harlem Scholars Academy located at 1573 Madison Avenue on Monday, May 16, 2016.

Samuelson, Smith and Taylor asked the students, mostly aged six and seven, questions about the importance of breakfast, what foods they really enjoy,

and what dishes they assist their parents with preparing.

From there, it was fun for the students, as they participated in the making of two healthy breakfast dishes made with ingredients like fresh fruit, pancakes, whipped cream, and more. By the look on the faces of the students, they not only enjoyed the event, but their teachers probably had to deal with a group with extra energy and enthusiasm.

Festival, which begins Wednesday, May 18, 2016. “The genesis of Harlem eat up is really to expand and inspire the restaurant and hospitality community in Harlem. I’m fortunate enough to have two restaurants and employ 200 people in Harlem but there are also a lot of smaller restaurants that don’t get the highlight that they deserve.”

Samuelson also answered why Harlem EatUp! Is a great event.

“You can bring the whole family. A lot of events are for free so it’s not about just one economic scale, it’s re-

ally a democratic festival for everyone.” As someone who attended last year, I can attest that it is a wonderful event and am looking forward to it this week.

of the great restaurants and cuisines and open them up to everybody and create a fun event in Morningside Park were people could go taste different things and really experience the Harlem culture and community. We signed up for it. We’re very active here, we have branches here, we have a deep partnership with

the Apollo and we’re going to have Citi Bike soon. It is a community that we’re investing in.”

The native Nigerian multimillionaire is the chairman of Heirs Holdings, Transcorp, and the United Bank of Africa, as well as the founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation.

After delivering the keynote address on April 26, 2016 at the Global Food Security Symposium in Washington, D.C. at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center before an international audience of government officials and business leaders, Elumelu gave an exclusive videotaped interview to the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA).

“Today, Africa is the land of profound opportunity, development, investment and empowerment,” Elumelu emphasized.

Concern was expressed about the lack of overall positive and constructive information about Africa’s commercial and business development in the media. Elumelu stated, “In Africa, with the proper engagement particularly in the energy and

agriculture sectors, there can be significant return on investment (ROI).”

During his keynote address on the challenges of the issue of food security for the world’s growing population that increasingly is becoming urbanized, Elumelu affirmed, “I believe that if we transform the agricultural sector, we transform the African continent.”

Elumelu defined the term Africapitalism as “an economic philosophy that embodies the private sector’s commitment to the economic transformation of Africa through investments that generate both economic prosperity and social wealth.”

Elumelu continued: “We see Africans taking charge of the value-adding sectors and ensuring that those value-added processes happen in Africa, not through nationalization or government policies, but because there is a generation of private sector entrepreneurs who have the vision, the tools and the opportunity to shape the destiny of the continent. Africapitalism is not capitalism with an African twist; it is a rallying cry for empowering the private sector to drive Africa’s economic and social growth.”

Tony Elumelu practices what he preaches. A year ago, The Tony Elumelu Foundation launched a $100 million entrepreneurship program with the goal of seeding and supporting education and development of 10,000 African entrepreneurs over the next ten years. Elumelu is also an advisor to President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

According to recent government studies, it is estimated that 6.3 billion people will live in urban cities by 2050 and that will certainly strain supply of food the world’s population unless plans are made now to produce more sustainable global food production. In other words, there will be a tremendous future market demand for international food development businesses.

do not recall ever seeing the housing market this competitive. Prices are literally exploding and are practically out of reach for prospective low to moderate income home buyers. What this means for those now entering the housing market is there is little affordable property available.

You must now face the unavoidable truth that you cannot afford to own property in Harlem. This is a sad but apparently true statement. Many Harlem residents have been priced out of the housing market. You are now being forced to make a difficult decision. You must either continue to pay rent for an apartment that provides no investment return or look to other areas of the city to pur-

chase a home. Neither of these choices is ideal if you want to remain in Harlem.

However, here are some other viable solutions to consider if you want to make buying a home in Harlem a reality: (1) buy with family members or trusted friends. Kamilah Forbes Appointed Executive Producer of Apollo Theater

he Apollo Theater today announced the appointment of Kamilah Forbes as the Theater’s new Executive Producer. A director, producer, and co­founder of Hi­ARTS/ Hip Hop Theater Festival, Forbes will join the Apollo in September 2016.

Forbes’ diverse body of work includes leadership roles in the nonprofit and commercial fields, developing presentations engaging artists from around the globe. Notable credits include What’s Going On, a partnership with the Kennedy Center on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s seminal album; One Mic: Hip Hop Culture Worldwide, a month-­ long festival that brought together more than 75 artists for a range of performances and education programs; serving as associate director of the recent Broadway revival

he winner of Tony and Drama Desk choreography awards for the soulful adaptation of The Wiz featuring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson and an Emmy for choreography of HBO film The Josephine Baker Story, Mr. Faison has spent the last two decades using his eponymous Firehouse Theater in West Harlem to explore ways to tell life stories as well as give students an insight into career opportunities on, off and around the stage.

“George Faison has had an incredible 30 year ca-

reer as a famed dancer and celebrated Broadway choreographer,” said Charles Thompson, SBI’s executive director. “He could have simply stopped there. Instead, he renovated an abandoned firehouse in Harlem and made it his mission to create an incubator for black and brown students to experience theater and dance in a master class setting.”

Dubbed Straight Outta Harlem, the gala will provide funding for full-time staff and production equipment for SBI’s Performing Arts Experience at A. Phil-

lip Randolph High School.

SBI is seeking sponsorship to upgrade the historic 1,000-seat auditorium, develop its student tech program and invite local

theater, dance and filmmakers to present their work in Harlem.

The evening’s festivities will begin with an open bar cocktail reception where

guests will have a chance to mingle on the terrace or bid in the silent auction whilst enjoying gourmet appetizers from local Harlem restaurants topped off with a multi-media showcase by students enrolled in the SBI Performing Arts Experience.

Attendees will also enjoy live performances from four internationally recognized musicians: Belgian singer and Zap Mama vocalist Marie Daulne, classically trained composer and violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain, singer Jennifer Jade and pianist and com-

poser Kwami Coleman.

Breynnan Lark in “Les Miserables” Talks About Broadway Debut

W

hen you go to the Imperial Theatre on West 45th Street to enjoy the phenomenal musical “Les Miserables,” you will be surprised to see the show’s magnificent use of non-traditional casting and you’ll be glad for it. Breynnan Lark is playing Eponine, a featured role in the show and her Broadway debut. She is absolutely delightful and touching as Eponine—the adult role.

It’s interesting to see this

This character is a pivotal one in this musical and Lark does a fantastic job of portraying this role.

Talking about the role, she explained, “I never imagined Eponine would ever be a role I would get to take on. So it was shocking in all the best ways, and I also think it is a testament to the universe sort

of just aligning itself when you trust it!” And align itself, it did, after Lark had four auditions, while she was still a student at AMDA. Her agents sent her out and her final callback was with the entire team. What got her the role was “luck, preparation, timing and a team that had faith in me,” Lark shared.

“Time flies when you’re having fun,” Lark said, as she thought about doing this role for over a year now. Her craft comes from her being a “hands on kind of girl…I learn a lot by doing and watching,” Lark remarked.

It’s great to know what you want to do with your life and for Lark that happened at a “very young age. It was something that felt innate. Entertaining made me feel confident during some insecure times. It was an outlet for me to connect with others as well as an escape,” explained the young actress.

Looking at her role models she named Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Martin Luther King and Oprah. She also named her mother and was glad to share, “I have been so abundantly blessed to have parents that have always supported my crazy dreams!”

Eponine is a role that takes a lot out of an actress, but each performance must be fresh and on-point. Considering her role, Lark said, “It’s tough at times! But I think learning to be in the moment and to not be so judgmental on my self is the first step. I had to realize I am a human and not a robot.

sistency is the goal, but being nice to yourself is also important.”

But often there is a survivor benefit that allows the person’s surviving spouse to continue to receive a check after the pensioner dies. Choosing the survivor’s benefit, though, means the pensioner receives a reduced amount while alive. “Some people choose the highest dollar amount so they have the most money coming in each month,” Bombara says. “But if they choose the largest amount, their spouse gets nothing when they die.”

• Weigh Social Security decisions. A surviving spouse can be eligible for their deceased partner’s full Social Security

benefit, but when they claim that benefit is a major factor in how large those monthly checks are.

For example, a surviving spouse can qualify for reduced benefits as early as age 60, but they can get full benefits if they are at their full retirement age.

• Seek professional advice if you’re confused. A financial professional can help you better understand the options available for both your pension and your Social Security. A professional also can provide advice on how to manage your assets so that the surviving spouse is in better shape to handle a potential drop in income.

ennis Richmond, Jr. is a 21-yearold Yonkers, New York resident. He is a senior African and African American studies major with a minor in education, attending Claflin University. Claflin University is a private, coeducational, liberal arts Historically Black College (HBCU) in Orangeburg, South Carolina. His stated goal is to work hard to ob-

tain a PhD and to become one of the largest HBCU advocate in the State of New York. He has continued to, “…beat the drum for HBCUs. He will be speaking to students through the National Action Network’s Youth Huddle about HBCUs According to Richmond, “HBCUs have given us the platform that we have today as African Americans.

During the Reconstruction Era in the 1870s, HBCUs started to educate the sons and daughters of former slaves. In the 1960s, many civil rights organizations were led by HBCU alum and current HBCU students. Today, these institutions continue to pave the way for thousands of African American college students and their communities.”

The Urban League State of Black America Report has stated that approximately 70% of Students who attend HBCUs graduate and 70% who attend other colleges and universities – do not graduate.

Since December 2014, Richmond has been speaking to students across New York and says he has no plans to stop anytime soon.

rt & culture is certainly alive at Pratt School of Design. In fact, the schools 2016 under graduate and post graduate students have it in abundance. The internationally renowned institution held its annual PRATT DESIGN 2016 exhibition to much fanfare. The annual event, which takes place annually at the institution’s sprawling Brooklyn campus, provided its graduating class of 2016 an opportunity to exhibit their creations before faculty, alumni, design industry professionals, family, friends and future employers.

I was not only blown away by the outstanding display of ingenuity and creativity, but floored by the social consciousness crafted in the majority of the work. Whether it was reimagining efficient living space for the disabled or refashioning

the staple highchair into functional furniture that grows with the family, the exhibition had something for everyone.

Interior Designer Christina Vincent was one of many Post Graduate students who used her culminating graduate project to address a social issue prevalent in society. The Austin Texan innovator’s work took on the issue of affordable housing through the lens of minimization among the wealthy.

Her project which addresses a term she coined “Luxury Micro Living” examines living without excess. According to Vincent “the overarching theme is to reducing the amount of things we own. We keep buying, keep collecting more and more stuff. The project requires residents to minimize,” and

provides incentives for those that do.

For the project Vincent reimagined turning 4 floors that currently houses multimillion dollar luxury penthouses at 432 Park Avenue the tallest residential skyscraper in the hemisphere into a communal space to house 32 residents.

“Residents will receive reduced rent on the condition that they would have to get rid of all their stuff with the exception of the thing they really care about,’ said Vincent.

“It is remains luxury living but forces people to live in a small cabinet and have them share kitchen space and living space with their roommates,” Vincent said. Another condition resident are required to make furniture and other art

object out of consumer waste.

For this project Vincent imagined repurposing plastic bags that would clog up landfills into fringes, chard broken glass into optical ambiance and recycled t-shirts into art.

“Right now there is no public entrance for people to enter the building,” says Vincent.

For her project, the communal space will turn into public space allowing the general public access to the exclusive residents.

Other projects range from environmentally friendly fashion made from refurbished material to creative solutions to assist disable residents sustain and strive in their own environment. One graduate students turned the eyesore, cumbersome crutch into a stylish luxury accessory.

Understanding and Use of the Third Eye

he journey toward understanding and using the Third Eye starts with accepting that we are a part of everything in our universe and everything in our universe is a part of us. We are connected by vibrations. Just as vibrations can carry audio and visual sounds and images to our material devices, our third eye gives us the ability to overcome the illusions of time and space and connect and receive the vibration of the mind of the universe.

While training to be-

come a Taoist master we were taught an exercise called heaven and earth.

Part of the exercise was used to focus attention on opening the Third Eye by concentrating on the area between the eyebrows with the eyes closed. The objective of this exercise is to allow the student to tune into the vibration of the universe. Taoism teaches that the Third Eye is the point between the two physical eyes, and expands to the middle of the forehead when open.

We still teach the heaven and earth exercise at the Harlem Ki Center.

The Pituitary Gland and the Pineal Gland are located in the area of our Third Eye. It is believed both by many modern scientists and ancient men of wisdom that the Pineal Gland can receive and visualize the highest frequencies that vibrate in our universe.

The wisdom of ancient Egypt cannot truly be obtained by only reading books. Most books, articles and teachings are interpretations of wisdom that we already possess. The wisdom of ancient Egypt tells us to “Know Thyself.” Only then can you receive the

vibrations of wisdom and truth.

What goes around comes around, the planets, the seasons, age, the energy of thought all follow the universal code of circular vibrations. There are ancient theories about a golden age on the continent of Atlantis where the circular code of knowledge vibrations that made it great also destroyed it.

It is believed that many of those who escaped the destruction of Atlantis developed the wisdom of ancient Egypt. The circular code of knowledge vibrations

just love it when someone says something to me that inspires me to think about things differently. Case in point; over the weekend I went to dinner with a couple of friends.

As conversations go . . . we managed to talk about our various interests and, of course, work! We have a great deal in common; we are entrepreneurs, and we have a lot of creative energy and ideas that we would like to pursue.

We look forward to our dinners because it is an op-

portunity for each of us to seek guidance and frank input from one another. Our conversations are enlightening, thought provoking and sometimes downright eye-opening! If you work for yourself, you know what I mean . . . it’s easy to get stuck and frustrated because the solution that you are seeking to a challenge is often right in front of you, and you don’t recognize it because you are too close to the situation! I call it the “vacuum cleaner effect.”

Much like a vacuum cleaner, which sucks up everything in its path, the “vacuum cleaner effect” happens when you work alone and rely only upon your own perceptions and expertise. Nothing comes

in unless you allow it, and nothing goes out unless your machine malfunctions big-time, then stuff spews all over the place!

Only then are you forced to look outside of your vacuum cleaner for answers or input. Now, you and I both know that to limit your interaction with others also limits your perspective.

Think about all the good information you are missing out on!

Now, back to my friends. . . When I shared my challenge with them of course they were able to look at it from their point of view and they even gave me some concrete suggestions. The issue that appeared to be so complicated and perplexing to me became crystal clear in a matter of moments. No

one waved a magic wand, but though their unfiltered vision; they managed to see possibilities that eluded me!

Well, my girlfriends were right on the money!

No matter how many times I remind myself to step outside of my cozy, creative environment; from time to time, I find myself in my vacuum cleaner dealing with the effect! So, I asked my friends how they manage to overcome the aforementioned “effect” and their answer was quite simple, “Audrey,” they said. “It always boils down to how much you enjoy wallowing in that dusty vacuum cleaner bag.

“Trombone Shorty”

would dance along with the bands in the parades. Man! That was fun! There were balloons, beads, and music, which “made everyone forget about their troubles for a little while.”

That also made Troy want to become a musician even more, so he and his friends created instruments from odds and ends they found around Tremé; Troy was happy to find a beat-up trombone, and he fixed it up good.

That’s the best part of being a musician: you can make music from almost anything.

So he was ready.

At the next parade, he grabbed his trombone, jumped right in, and started marching with the band. Because he was a little guy and the trombone is a big instrument, Troy’s brother gave Troy the nickname of “Trombone Shorty,” which is what

everybody called him from then on.

“I took that trombone everywhere,” Troy says, “and never stopped playing.”

He even took it to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and he played along with the musicians. He was so loud and so good that Bo Diddley called Trombone Shorty onstage and asked him to jam.

Trombone Shorty knew then that he could have his own band, so he did. Every day after school, his band practiced their music until they were able to perform “all around New Orleans” – and they still perform today!

Lately, you’ve played air guitar to a Prince song and were a drummer on your kitchen table. If your kids caught your love of music, they might likewise dream the dreams found inside

tale aloud to a twoyear-old, I think children ages four-to seven will like it better.

o not let anyone “poke holes” in your dream. Let’s consider the woodpecker, unique in nature possessing various adaptations for its lifestyle. The woodpecker has one of the longest tongues amongst birds its size, measuring five to six inches covered with sticky spiky hairs. Used to snatch insects, the tongue is launched and retracted

with great efficiency.

The bird’s sharp beak is used like a chisel. Drumming is the term used to describe the woodpecker’s speedy blows on any solid surface, wood or metal. It is done as a signal to claim its territory, drill a nest and ultimately attract a mate during the courtship ritual.

When the female woodpecker hears the sound of the drumming, she comes by to observe the male and the location he has staked out.

The 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act and state wildlife laws have classified woodpeckers as nongame migratory birds.

Legal assistance is available for removal. Once the

sirable spot, it is difficult to reverse its agenda. It will use its stiff tail feathers to prop itself like a leaning post and remain on the job until the job is completed.

The damage it brings can be dangerous to infrastructure and its drumming can be detrimental to peace of mind.

With some insight into the purpose driven lifestyle of the woodpecker, we may find some areas that are useful to our survival as well. Most importantly, like the bird, we need to strategize and set a plan of action. Like the woodpecker, there will always be conscientious steps taken to survive, but we are not migratory birds. Our mindset must be to thrive

With determination like the bird, we must prop ourselves against something stable and concrete and stay on the job until the job is done.

Let’s consider the bird’s sticky tongue that can reach great lengths to snatch what it needs. Our tongue can travel distances also, so to speak, spewing and extracting what it needs. Watch out for those who attach themselves to you with a hidden agenda of their own.

The bird’s beak strikes with speed. Too often, our noses strike speedily into the business of others, drilling hurtful words and privately shared aspirations of trusted friends.

It is unfair to harshly judge the woodpecker’s modem operandi. After all, the bird does what it has to do in a world that is not handing out favors.

There is one question to consider. Is someone poking holes in your dream?

Beloved, there can be no shame in your game; the woodpecker may have to go. However, I advise you to be certain and clear in your declaration, think deep and long. You may be the woodpecker!

52 CAN DO’S: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions for each week of the year Jesus proved you could fast for 40 days and 40 nights without food, but as I far as I know- the bible never mentioned anything about water!

Last week I asked the question, “what’s more basic than bread?” Well, try going without any water whatsoever for more than three – seven days and depending upon the external conditions (temperature and physical exertion), science attests you’ll probably die.

This week we highlight two more basics of a healthy life: water and beans –yes beans, you know the ones that are good for your heart and uh…well you know the rest.

Drink more water.

We know that water flushes out toxins and increases oxygen levels in the body, absorbs and distributes nutrients, and even burns fat (your body’s metabolism needs water to burn fat efficiently). But did you know drinking more water, especially in the morning when your blood is thicker (due to water loss while sleeping) protects against heart attacks and has also been associated with helping to lower high blood sugar levels (or hyperglycemia)? “An Evening with Friends” raises more than $400,000 for Professional Mentors serving high-risk children from Harlem and the Bronx

riends of the Children New York welcomed its new Executive Director Jerome D. Grant and over 400 guests to “An Evening with Friends” on Thursday, April 21, 2016, at the Edison Ballroom in mid-town Manhattan.

Attending the event were Friends Award winners Lawrence A. Larose, Partner, Chadbourne & Parke, and Kimberly R. Osgood, President, MBIA Foundation. In addition, the event welcomed Davis Polk, Partner James I. McClammy; American artist Richard Estes; former New York City Comptroller and current Managing Director of Goldin Associates, Harrison J. Goldin; Arcadio Casillas, President & CEO of Preferred Com-

pensation Corporation; PwC Managing Partner Gary C. Meltzer; and the 21 Friends NY Professional Mentors, who serve the organization’s 161 children from Harlem and the South Bronx.

Brooklyn Senior Games Held in Crown Heights

O

n Tuesday, May 10, New York State Senator Jesse Hamilton and New York City Council Member Robert Cornegy presided over the opening of the first-ever Brooklyn Senior Games.

Nearly one hundred seniors from throughout Brooklyn have participated in practice meets leading up to the week-long games. Nearly 200 athletes participated in the games Senator Hamilton ran the penultimate leg of the torch relay before the cauldron was lit jointly with senior athlete (swimming) Joyce Bolden, and Councilman Cornegy at St. Johns Recreation Center before a crowd of a hundred spectators.

Performers at today’s opening ceremonies included the Adaptive Glee Club, the Kip Jr. High School Band, Mei Yang Traditional Fan Dancers, Gianvito Botallico, Charles Caldeira, and DJ Danny.

The Adaptive Glee Club performed the US National Anthem, followed by Miles Davis performed by the Kip Jr. High School Band.

Next Mei Yang Traditional Chinese Fan Dancers performed. Gianvito Botallico sang “The Impossible Dream” accompanied on piano by Charles Caldeira.

DJ Danny served as the DJ for the morning.

The Brooklyn Senior Games promote a positive senior image and encourages life-long fitness activities. The Games will

celebrate Brooklyn seniors (age 50+) while offering competitive games like bowling, swimming, table tennis, track and field.

The Senior Games are presented by New York State Senator Jesse Hamilton & NYC Parks in partnership with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Councilman Robert Cornegy, State Senator Kevin Parker, and community partners, New York Police Department, New York Department of Transportation and the Fire

Department of New York.

Additional sponsors of the games include Dr. Lipnitsky of Pain Free NYC, Emblem Health, New York Road Runners (NYRR), Golden Krust, Humana and Super Food Town.
