or Chicago-based investor and philanthropist John Rogers, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition’s annual Wall Street Project in New York City is a must-attend event.

The three days of seminars and speeches in the Big Apple every winter is a chance for Rogers, the son of a Tuskegee Airman, and other African American businessmen and women to share notes and strategies on how to break into, survive and ultimately thrive in the largely White world of Wall Street by gaining access to capital.

But for African Americans, Wall Street is riddled with potholes. Many of the country’s major hospitals, and other institutions with huge portfolios to invest “have never worked with Black firms,” Rogers says. “They have never had their ‘Jackie Robinson moment.’”

Even now, with a Black man in the White House, Wall Street, Rogers says, can feel like “modern day Jim Crow.”

It was at this conference where Rev. Jackson first introduced Rogers, chairman of Ariel Investments, to the CEO of General Motors.

Today, General Motors is one of Ariel’s largest clients.

“There is no talent deficit,” Rev. Jackson says.

“There is an opportunity deficit.”

This year was the conference’s 19th year and was held from Feb. 16 through Feb. 18 at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel. This year’s lineup of heavy hitters included John Thompson, CEO of Microsoft, Sheila C. Johnson, founder and CEO, Salamander Hospitality and co-founder of Black

Entertainment Television and United States Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY).

There were panels on “Corporate Finance and Equity Syndicates,” “Corporate Board Diversity,” “Global Economic Expansion Opportunities” and “Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Reconnecting and Sustaining Relationships with Wall Street.”

There were two international sessions, which featured high ranking U.S. and foreign government officials. “Global Economic Expansion” featured panelists from different industries from across the globe, including Akwasi Opong-Fosu, Minister of State, Office of the President of Ghana and the keynote speaker, H.E. Eucatio Bakale, Minister of Economy, Planning & Public Investment, the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. That panel was followed by “The South Africa – US Business Forum” with Florizelle

Liser, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Africa, Mzwandile Masina, Deputy Minister of the Department of Trade & Industry, South Africa and Elizabeth Thabete, Deputy Minster, Department of Small Business, South Africa.

The Wall Street Project uses Operation Breadbasket’s model of research, education, negotiation and reconciliation to challenge Corporate American to end its shameful, multi-billion dollar trade deficit with minority vendors and consumers. “Unless we knock on the right doors, the doors will not come open,” Rev. Jackson says.

Sadly, the Wall Street Project has often been a voice in the wilderness.

Richard Manson, CEO and president of SourceMark, a medical and surgical supply company, says, “Had we listened and taken action” 19 years ago when Rev. Jackson started pushing for more engagement with Wall Street, more

awareness of the street’s vast power, “I think we’d be a lot better shape than we are now.”

For Rev. Jackson, the Wall Street Project is part of “the fourth stage of our struggle” for freedom and equity. The first stage was surviving the horrors of slavery, a 242-year sojourn.

The second was “the season of Jim Crow and lynching when 4,500 African Americans were lynched.” The third stage was fighting for and winning the right to vote.

Those stages of the struggle left Black people “out of slavery, out of Jim Crow, with the right the vote” and almost “starving to death” because “we were denied access to capital.”

“We are free,” Rev.

Jackson says. “But not equal. Effort and excellence means a lot. Inheritance and access means more.”

Access and opening doors is what the Wall Street Project is all about.

“We have never lost a battle we fought,” Rev. Jackson says. “And we have never won a battle we did not fight.”

taff from New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli’s office will attend community events around the state this month to help residents search for lost and forgotten money, also known as unclaimed funds.

DiNapoli oversees 33 million unclaimed funds accounts valued at $14 billion until the money can be returned to its rightful owners.

“I encourage everyone to come out and search for money that may be waiting for them,” DiNapoli said. “We return more than a million dollars a day to residents across the state, but we want to do more. It’s your money, we want to give it back.”

The billions in unclaimed funds come from old bank accounts, utility deposits, uncashed checks, insurance claims, stocks and other sources that have been dormant for a number of years. Some accounts hold money that has been lost and forgotten since the 1940s.

Residents who cannot make it to the events can search for and claim their money by using the online claiming system or by calling 1-800-221-9311.

ne hundred one years ago, Booker T. Washington penned a letter to the editors of America’s leading black newspapers. In it, he contended that health, more than any other measure, was the single most important aspect to achieving progress and parity for African-Americans.

In May, we remember Washington’s call to action, celebrate the gains that have been made, and renew our shared commitment to the work that remains during National Minority Health Month. And as our families, neighborhoods, churches, schools and businesses band together to tackle the many barriers that still impede minority health, there are no nobler warriors to be found than those in our community health centers.

Indeed, community health centers (CHCs) serve some of the nation’s highest-risk, most medically vulnerable populations, with more than 70 percent of patients living below the federal poverty line. And more than two-thirds of the patients who seek care at CHCs are members of racial or ethnic minorities. In 2014, Hispanic patients made up 34 percent of the health center population, and African-Americans accounted for 23 percent.

That’s why when it comes to reducing disparities and truly reclaiming black health, CHCs are our best chance for success and our brightest hope for equity.

Not only do these sites provide vital access points to clinical care, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, they also address the less visible, but equally important social determinants of health. In a coordinated effort with social service agencies and local nonprofits, CHCs work to alleviate food and housing insecurity, provide education and job training, and connect patients to proactive financial planning services.

In Louisiana, for example, the Daughters of Charity Services of New Orleans (DCSNO) – a system of community-based health centers throughout greater New Orleans and part of Ascension, the nation’s largest not-for-profit health system – is working to combat the diabetes epidemic at the local level. Its Diabetes Prevention Program is delivering targeted interventions to at-risk individuals, with the goal of reducing participants’ body weight by 7 percent and increasing their physical activity to 150 minutes per week, by providing educational sessions

on nutrition, physical activity, managing stress and overcoming barriers to health. DCSNO is also partnering with local organizations to provide vouchers for fresh fruits and vegetables at local farmers’ markets.

This supportive and holistic approach provides a promising model to advance minority health. Studies show that CHCs perform especially well when it comes to providing timely preventive services for vulnerable populations and managing chronic illnesses that disproportionately affect minority communities, such as hypertension and diabetes. They also boast a lower average cost per patient, per day than other physician settings, saving the American healthcare system an estimated $24 billion a year.

CHCs are so effective because they are deeply rooted in a sense of place. We know that where we live, work and learn matters just as much to our health as our family medical history, and health centers are often situated in the heart of minority neighborhoods. The fact that CHCs are so embedded in the areas they serve – they’re even governed by a board of patient-directors – often makes them better positioned to address the unique needs

of racial and ethnic minority populations. As providers and public health officials continue to wrestle with the challenge of delivering culturally relevant care, community health centers present accessible and ideal locations.

The Affordable Care Act continues to provide quality coverage to those who need it most, and community health centers remain a key player in carrying out the promise of healthcare reform. As we observe National Minority Health Month, we’re called to celebrate community health centers for their impressive outcomes and commit to their future success. Investing in these innovative models of care means supporting health strategies that work, are safe and leave no one behind.

here is not much financial assistance available for low to moderate income prospective home buyers. However the New York State Department of Housing and Community Renewal (HCR) has a Section 8 program that can be used to assist first time home buyers to qualify for a mortgage. Rather than supplementing your monthly rental payments the vouchers can be applied toward your monthly mortgage payments.

HCR will require the Section 8 recipient to complete an approved home buyer education workshop. You must also receive financial money management counseling prior to the purchase of the home.

You must be approved for a mortgage. The same application requirements must also be taken into consideration- two years consistent employment and clean credit history. You must provide the following documents for the pre-approval- two years tax returns and W2; 2 month pay stubs; and 3 months bank statements to illustrate you have adequate funds to cover the down payment and closing costs. You must provide your Section 8 award letter so the loan officer can determine your housing payment and debt to income (DTI) ratio.

Jazz Day is the culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month, which draws public attention to jazz and its extraordinary heritage throughout April.

I have lived in many different countries and attended jazz concerts in innumerable venues… nothing compares to the emotions THIS place stirs up in you. It embraces you with its warm at-

Nash tip toing on clarinet and saxophone and the whole band, corally (as Pentecostal Ulysses put it) giving the best of themselves. And believe me that was a real treat!.

To enrich this already wonderful experience, Ulysses Owens introduced, “a Lady I heard one night I was at a concert in a club in Harlem.

Her powerful and soulful voice reached me before I even saw her ..in that moment I knew I had to share a musical experience with her. I had played at Lincoln Center various times, with other bands, but never as a headliner. When last year they invited me to perform with musicians of my choice I immediately reached out to her, and she agreed! It is my pleasure to invite to the stage the great Miss Alyson Williams.”

When Alyson walked on stage with her magical voice and captivating personality the audience knew, the spirit and culture of Harlem was in the house. She began with interpreting ‘It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing ‘

followed by a deep blues rooted ‘Storming rain’ that gave me shivers.

The concert was a success that compelled the audience to a standing ovation.

After the performance I had the opportunity of talking to the band and

ask a few questions. I was intrigued to know why they titled this concert ‘Celebrating Ellington and beyond’. Ulysses gave me the answer: “Ellington was one of the greatest composers not only of Jazz but of all kinds of music. To

celebrate his legacy it is therefore important to go beyond by projecting his music forward, that is why we played his compositions together with arrangements written by our band members.”

Alyson added that Ellington represents the essence of jazz and this concert was for her ‘authentic and at the same time a new beginning to his legacy’ I left Dizzy’s Club lighthearted and grateful for this musical enriching experience that will remain etched in my memory and spirit.

African American Women Have Less Accurate Mammograms

A

frican American women are referred for fewer breast biopsies after having a mammogram than white women, yet they have a higher rate of unnecessary biopsies or false positive results, according to a study presented at Touro College Research Day. Organized by the Touro Research Collaborative, Touro College Research Day was held at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Touro College of Pharmacy campus at 230 West 125th Street in Harlem.

“If a woman has dense breasts, mammography is likely to miss tumors and she is more likely to have

false positive results,” says Joseph Indelicato, PhD, Chair of Touro College Research Collaborative, Touro College School of Health Sciences. “African American women have a higher rate of dense breasts than white women, so I wanted to see if this could be one of the reasons why African American women are diagnosed with later stage breast cancer and have a poorer survival rate,” he says.

In this study, women waiting to have a mammography at screening facilities were asked to take a breast cancer risk assessment and to answer 27 questions about previous biopsies. The study included 11,414 women

from Long island ages of 35 to 69.

Of the white women, 37.7 percent of those who had received a breast biopsy were diagnosed with cancer compared to only 25.2 percent of African American women who had a biopsy. This suggests that more African American women underwent unnecessary biopsies. White women were also 23.5 percent more likely to be referred for biopsies than African Americans, meaning that mammography is likely missing cancers in African American women. This could potentially lead to African American women being diagnosed with later stage breast cancer. Indeed, white women were

70 percent more likely to have cancer detected than African Americans.

“Black women are getting unnecessary biopsies, and the surgeries are much less useful for them,” says Indelicato. “White women, on the other hand, are more likely to get an accurate mammogram.”

Women with dense breast tissue are advised to talk to their doctors about having a follow up exam, such as an ultrasound, though there are no guidelines that state that these women should get an ultrasound. Some states require screening facilities to inform women that they do have dense breasts and that they should discuss follow up testing with their physicians.

“Before this study, nobody has ever looked at the differential rate of positive biopsies in African American women and white women,” says Indelicato.

“We want to make doctors and women more aware of the importance of the limitations of mammograms in African Americans.”

Colon Cancer: What to Know about Getting Tested

C

olon cancer is a significant health risk, however, less than half of people aged 50 and older get tested for colon cancer. But early detection can save lives.

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the US, yet it has a 90 percent cure rate when detected early, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

“We say the best screening is the one that actually gets done,” says Dr. Judy Yee, professor and vice chair of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at University of California, San Francisco.

CT Colonography (CTC) or “virtual colonoscopy” -- a less invasive, safe and sedation-free alternative to the colonoscopy -- is increasing colorectal screening rates. CTC uses hightech, low-dose X-rays to

produce moving images of the colon, which doctors examine to detect colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps.

If you’re interested in avoiding a colonoscopy, but want to get the screening needed to verify your

colorectal health, consider the following about CTC, an ACS recommended screening test: • Comprehensiveness: The exam can detect abnormalities outside of the colon, including early-stage cancers in the liver, kidney and lungs, and can pinpoint potentially dangerous conditions, like aneurysms. In this way, it serves as two or even more detection tests in one.

• Accuracy: CTC is just as accurate as a colonoscopy for detecting clinically significant polyps and cancers; however, you don’t have to undergo sedation. There’s no need to take time off work or have someone drive you from the hospital.

• Affordability: This exam costs a fraction of the price of a standard colonoscopy and is covered by several major insurers. Your insurance company can verify whether CTC is covered under your plan.

• Non-Invasive: While a colonoscopy is the standard procedure, there is a small risk of serious complications associated with the test. However, CTC is non-invasive, as no needles or scopes enter the body. Only a small tube is placed in the bottom of the colon to help distend the colon for viewing.

• Improved Screening Rates: Availability of CTC screening significantly boosts colorectal

cancer screening rates, according to studies at National Military Medical Centers in Bethesda, MD, and San Diego.

The US Preventive Services Task Force recently released draft recommendations naming CTC as an “alternative screening test,” and Medicare is currently reviewing coverage of this test in order to provide seniors with a lifesaving alternative.

Bottom line: not enough people are getting screened for colon cancer.

Whatever screening alternative you prefer, make sure you schedule this vital appointment and encourage loved ones to do the same.

Blue Light and Your Eyes: What You Need To Know

B

y the time average American children reach age 17, their eyes will have spent the equivalent of nearly six years looking at digital devices, according to findings from a new survey by VSP Vision Care.

While the survey shows that parents are concerned with increasing screen time, it found that nearly 60 percent have little to no awareness of blue light -- the high-energy light emitted from digital devices -and its impact on vision.

As blue light enters the eye, it causes visual strain

because it is defocused in front of the retina and scatters, creating an effect visually perceived as glare. The eyes are then forced to work overtime to focus and process the wavelengths of light.

From smartphones, to tablets, laptops, televisions, and even CFL and LED lighting, today’s family is surrounded by devices that produce blue light. As we spend increasing amounts of time staring at screens, blue light exposure is reaching unprecedented levels.

This has led to an alarming increase in reports of

digital eye strain, especially amongst children who are experiencing tired, sore eyes, headaches and trouble focusing.

“At home, in classrooms and at work, our eyes are exposed to blue light,” says VSP optometrist, Dr. Gary Morgan.

“Technology continues to

change the way we live and allows us to be more efficient and connected, but despite its benefits, we must be mindful of the impact of increased blue light exposure on our eyes.”

• Observe the 20/20/20 Rule: Give eyes a break every 20 minutes and spend 20 seconds looking at something at least 20 feet away.

• Maintain Digital Distance: Find a comfortable working distance from your screen. This is especially important for children, since the intensity of light increases exponentially the closer our eyes are to light sources. Children have shorter arms and therefore receive a more intense dose of blue light from devices. They should hold devices as far away from their eyes as is comfortable.

• Lower Screen Brightness: Turn down the brightness level of device screens to reduce blue light exposure, especially during evening hours.

• Limit Screen Time Before Bed: Blue light can slow melatonin production, which helps us sleep. Reducing exposure to blue light a couple of hours before bed may make it easier to go to sleep.

The Third Eye

e often hear about the concept of the Third Eye. Like many secrets of life, only a few truly understand the concept and power of a misused and misunderstood gift that was given to us at birth. In ancient Egypt the eye symbol was associated with the Eye of Horus or Ra. The opening of the Third Eye meant the achievement of enlightenment through various incarnations and the understanding of the mystery of God. For centuries the mystery schools of ancient Egypt taught disciples to tran-

scend the duality of mind and understand contrast as a way to find truth.

During the reign of Akhenaten, one of the last great Egyptian Pharaohs, the Aten was installed as the principle of the one God of Egypt. Aten stood for the awakening of the Third Eye that sees the “soul within or the “sun within. The wisdom of the ancient mystery schools once taken out of Egypt became guarded secrets. The knowledge could only be acquired by being initiated into secret societies like the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons. Benjamin Franklin and a number of America’s founding

fathers were Freemasons, a reason that the all seeing “Eye in the Pyramid” is in the Great Seal of the United States and on the U.S. Dollar Bill.

The Kybalion (see www. theartofwarogers.info) published in 1908 gave the masses the ability to learn about the secret wisdom and knowledge of the ancient Egyptian mysteries.

In 1938, Vera Stanley Alder published “The Finding of The Third Eye”. The Alder book provides the common person an insight to the secret mysteries and scientific explanation of the Third Eye. Alder writes from both a scientific and spiritual

concept when explaining the power and workings of the Third Eye. Science in the mid-thirties conducted research that proved without a doubt that all things in the universe are vibrating. Low rates of vibration form visible objects, higher rates of vibration form less visible things like gas but this frequency of vibration cannot penetrate solids. Sound and heat vibration frequencies can pass through solids. The vibration of color can only be seen up to a certain frequency. Any color vibration above violet like ultra-violet and X-rays cannot be seen. Thoughts are also

vibrations that use ether as their vehicle of transportation rather than heavier air particles. “Ether is that indefinable substance in which supports the earth and all the atoms of the air,” writes Alder.

We all have two organs that allow us to experience all vibrations. They are the Pituitary Gland and the Pineal Gland. The Pituitary Body is located behind the root of the nose, and is very sensitive to vibrations. The Pineal Gland is located in the middle of the head behind and just above the Pituitary Gland. This gland contains pigment similar to that found in the eyes. It

is connected by two nerve cords with the optic thalamus; it controls the vibration of light upon the body.

For this reason many scientist now suggest it is the remnant of a third physical eye.

We all have the gift of a Third Eye that can see what our two eyes cannot.

thought it would be good to consider a different kind of list, of spiritual must-haves, to apply to all seasons to come. Perhaps if we all adopt some basic principals we can improve the quality of our lives and the lives of those we come in contact with on a daily basis. Drum roll please . . . going forward resolve to…

three words (with a chuckle, I might add), but never really practicing the intent. Well, it’s a new day! Let go of the turmoil that threatens to bog you down, and move forward in peace, knowing that a higher power has everything under control. Know it from the very center of your spirit. Even as negativity and turmoil surround you, you can wear a spiritual armor stronger than any protection human beings can devise.

(8) Release your creative energy! Do you secretly want to be an artist, but haven’t pursued it because you feel silly or that you don’t have the time or talent? Who cares! This is about exploring your interests.

Following your passion could lead to a new job or hobby or become a source of self-expression and joy that flows through to other areas of your life. You will be a more joyful person.

(9) Find the courage to release the child within you! This one is a tough one, because we have “grown up”, and being grown means a certain amount of seriousness is in order.

Nonsense! Lighten up!

I am not suggesting that you put on blinders, but that you let yourself be awed by the wonder and sheer majesty of life—

and by the divine sense of humor we experience every day.

(10)Exercise free choice. Choose something you feel you need in order to make a difference in your life in 2016 and go after it.

Know that it’s all up to you. Nothing and nobody is dictating your path of action.

So there you have it.

Of course if you make these 10 must-haves a part of your life, the world won’t change overnight and neither will you. But I promise you that you will set the

(1) Respect yourself and others. By respecting the differences that make each one of us unique, we have an opportunity to experience the rich mosaic that life has to offer. It sounds simple: Accept a person regardless of race, religion, creed, color or country of origin.

(2) Feel compassion with an open, loving heart. Hate is contagious, but so is love. It is within each of us to think and feel with love.

Set aside your own interests to allow your spirit to hear unspoken pain and heartache. Respond with kindness, understanding and humility when asked to understand and comprehend the seemingly impossible.

(3) Develop understanding, and be gentle with yourself and others. People’s life experiences help shape their personality. No two people share the same perspective on anything even if they experience

it together. Make room for others and their experiences.

(4) Begin to value time, yours and everyone else’s. Life is short, too short to waste it procrastinating. When you think about it, it takes a great deal of time to procrastinate! Why not do something instead of putting it off? Ultimately you save time because you are freeing up energy to pursue other opportunities.

(5) Have a prayerful spirit. Take time each day to meditate or to pray for the welfare of the world and its people.

The universe needs your support.

(6) Commit to at least one kind act each day. How much time does it take to reach out and brighten someone’s day? To quietly acknowledge that the world doesn’t revolve around you? To realize that we all have to look beyond our own pain and circumstances to help others? To know that by taking time to be kind we are helping someone else heal?

(7) Work toward inner peace. I think it was Jasmine Guy’s character, Whitley in an episode of A Different World that I found particularly significant who said, “Relax, relate, release!” I found myself repeating those

“Britt-Marie Was Here”

Much as she loved her husband, Kent didn’t appreciate her. Britt-Marie wasn’t sure he even saw her anymore and so, deciding to leave him, she applied for a job. It had been decades since she’d done anything but keep a home and jobs were scarce, but there seemed to be one position for which she was qualified. And so, Britt-Marie went to work as a temporary recreation-center caretaker in Borg, a dying village alongside a half-abandoned road a few miles from town.

There was a pizzeria in Borg, an Everything Store, and a post-office, all in the same building, run by a wheelchair-bound woman who drank too much.

The village boasted a policeman, a man who received constant packages, a sight-challenged woman with a dog, and a soccer pitch, to which the village’s few children flocked.

Soccer was everything in Borg – mostly because there was little else.

Britt-Marie hated soccer.

She hated her predicament, too, but someone had to clean the rec center.

Someone had to give the kids somewhere to go, and step up as “coach” for their soccer team. Eventually, someone had to look at Britt-Marie and really see her…

“Hey! Look at me!” ou spent a fair amount of your childhood hollering that. Watch me. Look here. See what I’m doing, because nobody likes to be ignored. In fact, as in the new book “Britt-Marie Was Here” by Fredrik Backman, being invisible is the worst thing of all.

Civility is dead.

Britt-Marie feared that was the case these days.

In civil households, silverware is stored forks-knivesspoons in the drawer. Windows are clean, clothes are pressed, dinner is at six o’clock and not a minute later. These things are important.

She said that to Kent many times throughout their marriage, and he laughed. She also asked him repeatedly to put his dirty shirt in the hamper, but he always tossed it on the floor instead. It usually smelled of pizza and perfume.

Britt-Marie didn’t wear perfume.

ma? Bread is not rocket science folks. It basically includes 4 ingredients: flour, water, salt, and yeast –not the 15 - 25 or so ingredients that generally describe most bread food labels.

While bread is not necessarily a health food, it becomes much healthier if you bake it yourself using ingredients you can pronounce. I chose this recipe for its simplicity and taste. Have your child or grandchild make it with you. There is something comforting and even spiritual about the practice of baking bread as many people will attest. Add crushed nuts, raisins, and cinnamon if you like it a bit sweeter or eliminate the honey if you don’t.

Coconut Bread (Adapted from Coco-

nutmama.com) 6 Organic Eggs, at room temperature ½ Cup coconut oil, melted and cooled 1 Tablespoon raw honey (optional) ¾ Cup coconut flour 2 Tablespoons arrowroot powder (Note: optional, used as a thickener similar to cornstarch, only healthier for your body; being that it is not derived from corn which is typically associated with GMOs. Arrowroot is typically found in most supermarkets in the baking section) ½ Teaspoon sea salt 1 Teaspoon aluminum free baking powder Directions: Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

It’s a centuries old comfort food staple that’s become quite discomforting due to its association with GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) and gluten (the protein found in wheat).

Self-Publishing at the Bronx Book Fair

n Sunday May 8, at the Bronx Book fair, small presses displayed their publications, plus the event featured speaker panels.

Self-published authors had their works on display and for sale at the Bronx Library Center at 310 East Kingsbridge Road.

A panel discussed the

means to get the works of people of color published.

Ulises Gonzales is a literature professor at Lehman College of CUNY in the Bronx. He has published his works in the Barcelona Review in Spain and deals with Spanish literature. Ulises even started a self-published mag azine when he was still a student

and used to give it out to fellow students.

Also speaking, Carolyn Butts at age 25 was already publishing a literary magazine. She is involved with the arts at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation in Brooklyn, NY, and also is on the board of “African Voices,” a nonprofit that gives writing

workshops in New York City.

Carlos Aguasaco commented that City University of NY (CUNY) is a huge university, but unlike others, does not have its own university press. Instead, he collaborates with the Artepoética Press that publishes about a book a month. He is an Assistant Professor at CUNY of Latin American Studies and Spanish.

At the book tables, Mr. Rashaun J. Allen has been self-publishing his works for 7 years, since the age of 22. His book, “In the Moment” is poetry about love, and loss. A young girl is forced to make a decision about her life after a compromising situation develops. His other poetry book is called “A Walk Through Brooklyn.”

Rashaun learned to design the book covers, get an editor, copyright, get an ISBN number, and find out who were his audience and potential readers. He markets his book through www. amazon.com. Rashaun is currently teaching at the Stonybrook SUNY branch in Manhattan.

Gina Humber self-published her book, “It’s All Good.” It’s a children’s book that through pictures and stories promotes people working together of all colors and abilities / disabilities. Gina is a New York City special needs teacher, and markets her book at www.ginahumber.com.

Bronx Resident Colette Smith to Help the American Lung Association Educate Women By Sharing her Experience with Lung Cancer at Annual "Lung Force Walk" song and music, participants will celebrate the collective power of their breath while walking for the thousands of women and men in New York City that are diagnosed with lung cancer each year.

Smith first sought medical assistance when she began having palpitations. As several doctors began consulting on her health, Smith was surprised to learn that lung cancer was even a consideration, having never been a smoker.

After multiple tests, and still without an official diagnosis, Smith’s medical team determined that surgery was necessary. “Ultimately, a surgeon told me I just had to bite the

bullet and be prepared that they might find lung cancer. I had no idea that my symptoms were signs of lung cancer, but that operation probably saved my life.” Smith said. When she woke up from surgery, Smith was told that her doctors had found a tumor and were forced to remove the upper-left lobe of her lung.

Never a smoker and just living through her husband’s cancer, Smith left the hospital feeling angry and sorry for herself. “Before this, lung cancer wasn’t even on my radar. I was still wrapping my head around my husband’s battle with cancer, and suddenly I was facing my own

health challenges, and it was something I never saw coming..,” Smith said. Lung cancer diagnoses have more than doubled in women in the last 35 years.. After some time and with the help of a therapist, Smith decided to educate herself and get involved with LUNG FORCE. “I want people to know that you don’t have to smoke to get lung cancer. I want people to know that a diagnosis of lung cancer is not the end of your life,” Smith said.

Our LUNG FORCE Walk in New York City is a great event that works to raise awareness about lung cancer in women,” said Jeff Sey-

ler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “Colette’s story not only illustrates some of the hidden facts about lung cancer, but she gives a face to the startling statistics behind this disease; lung cancer is the number one cancer in women, yet only one percent of women know this. If we continue to educate others and help people like Colette share their stories, we can begin knocking these statistics down.”

Participation for the LUNG FORCE Walk in New York City is free. However, LUNG FORCE Walk is a fundraising event and all participants are encouraged to

raise donations to support research, early detection, advocacy, education and awareness for lung cancer. BP Adams Announced Adopt-A-Shelter Animal Day

B

rooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams announced that he will host Adopt-a-Shelter Animal Day at Marine Park on Saturday, April 30, with dogs and cats available for adoption and additional resources for pets and their owners. The event, organized in collaboration with the Animal Care Center of New York, Foster Dogs, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, and Rescue City Pet Adoption Center, allowed visitors to meet potential new members of their families and start the process of adoption. In addition, there were opportunities to hear advice from Bite This, Brooklyn Bark, Dawgs All Day, and Honest Kitchen, learn safety tips for emergencies from the New York City Office of Emergency Management, and

renew or purchase a dog license with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Borough President Adams was joined at the announcement by representatives of the partner organizations and four shelter dogs: Bruce, Buddha, Rosemary, and Zoey.

“How do we define our family?” said Borough President Adams.

“Our family includes more than our parents and our brothers and sisters. The family also includes the cats, the birds, the dogs, and our other pets. Owning a pet supports the development of children, teaching them to assume responsibility. I encourage Brooklynites and all New Yorkers to come out on Saturday to meet these shelters animals who will become loyal friends.”

“We have hundreds

of sweet, fun, beautiful animals in need of homes,” said Risa Weinstock, executive director of Animal Care Centers of NYC. “Helping them requires community support, and we’re so grateful to Borough President Adams for encouraging pet adoption--something that clearly benefits pets and people alike.”

“The Alliance for NYC’s Animals is delighted to be a part of Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams’ Adopt-A-Shelter Animal Day,” said Stephanie Mattera, spokesperson for the Alliance for NYC’s Animals. “Our adoption van will be onsite featuring cats from Brooklyn Animal Action, one of our 150 Alliance Participating Organizations. The Alliance is committed to saving the lives of NYC’s homeless animals. We

recognize that collaboration is essential to accomplishing this mission and that adoption events give animals the best chance of finding their forever homes. It’s a privilege to be a part of this wonderful event, and we thank Borough

Restoration Project of Plaza Fountain at Queens Plaza

“I am pleased that the restoration of this site will include a significant tribute to the people who helped to build and shape our wonderful borough; the women of Queens County,” said City Councilmember Karen Koslowitz. “This new public space will now be able to be enjoyed by everyone, and will contribute to the quality of life enjoyed by the residents of our great borough.”

“I am thrilled that Borough President Katz and Council Member Koslowitz developed a wonderful plan and work has begun to repair and enhance the Queens Boulevard Plaza Fountain,” said State Senator Leroy Comrie. “It is a testament to the dedication and commitment of these outstanding public servants, that Queens residents will have a beautiful newly restored public space to enjoy. I applaud them both for their vision to include a plaque commemorating the legacy of the women of Queens, who have worked to make our borough the best place to live, work and play in our city.”

DOC presented the project’s progress to the New York City Public Design Commission in January 2016. The contractor is Prespective Construction Company, which submitted the winning proposal as part of the DDC’s competitive bid process. The restoration work is not anticipated to affect vehicular or pedestrian traffic patterns in the vicinity.

The project is projected for completion by Spring 2017.

estoration work began this week on the long-neglected, fenced-in fountain located in the plaza on the corner of Queens Boulevard and Union Turnpike, at the edge of the grounds of Queens Borough Hall.

The $720,000 restoration project contracted by the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DOC) will repair the damaged stonework at the base of the fountain, improve landscaping and install plantings, new lighting and benches for public use.

Once completed, the site will also include a ceremonial plaque indicating that the site has been rededicated in honor of the women of Queens.

“This restoration project will create a fitting tribute in a prominent location in our borough “to the women of Queens,” said Borough President MELINDA KATZ. “The site will soon host a visible, meaningful tribute to the women of Queens and become a public space utilized and enjoyed by all.”

“We are proud to partner with Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services for the historic restoration of the Queens Boulevard Plaza Fountain,” said DDC Commissioner Dr. Feniosky Pena-Mora. “We look forward to enhancing the community the City’s growth by designing and building a public space dedicated to the women of Queens.”
