Cutting Your Medical Bills via Smartphone

hat if your next doctor’s visit could happen by smartphone from anywhere in the world? It could happen sooner than you think.

It’s called telemedicine, or telehealth: The use of Internet-connected devices to communicate information about diseases, symptoms and other health data. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is driving innovators in healthcare and technology to develop apps and devices that offer greater access to healthcare products and services at a lower cost. In fact, the global telehealth market is expected to grow from $440.6 million in 2013 to $4.5 billion by 2018, according to Colorado-based research firm IHS. How could this affect you?

Though apps that measure everything from your daily walk or run to your heart rate are already available, an incredible

range of options are coming.

Here are some of the current and future product development trends in smartphone and wearable healthcare: Physical activity and vitals tracking. While many major health systems and hospitals allow you to download apps that let you schedule appointments, see lab results and even communicate by email or text with your doctor, such offerings have no diagnostic

value… yet. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently released policy statements on what it calls “mobile medical apps” that will actually allow tracking of vital health data for direct interpretation by trained health professionals.

GPS Medicine. Let’s say you need to fill a prescription and you want to know the cheapest place to buy it within a 10-mile radius of your office. Using technology sim-

ilar to the restaurant, movie and service-finding sites you probably use now, developers are considering similar models for medical supply and service-pricing data that could save you money in real time.

Diagnosis by selfie. Who knew taking a selfie could help improve your health? This new technology allows patients to take a photo of a non-life-threatening injury or rash using their cell phones (http://www.wsj.

com/articles/the-future-ofmedicine-is-in-your-smartphone-1420828632). Then, an algorithm processes the image, evaluates it and texts back the diagnosis. Developers are coming up with sensors to collect symptom- and condition-related health data, which could mean that in the future, physicians will have a lot more to work with than a mere photo.

Virtual appointments.

Healthcare legislation is also expected to spur use of handheld devices to create 24/7, real-time communication between patients and practitioners for the cost of a co-pay – or less. In a 2014 report, consulting firm Deloitte said that there would be 100 million health “eVisits” globally, potentially saving over $5 billion in costs compared to those incurred by traditional physician visits.

But before you start downloading this new technology, research the following: Who made the app and

what do the developers really know about my condition?

What about privacy?

What’s in the app’s usage agreement and how safe is the payment, prescription or medical data required to use the app?

What does my primary care doctor or my insurer think about me using this app?

Could using it affect my coverage in any way?

What does it really cost to use the app and how might it affect data charges on my smartphone or tablet bill?

Bottom line: The ability to manage your healthcare by smartphone is a revolutionary concept. But before you dive in head first, learn as much as you can about the technology and whether your current health professionals and networks support it.

arlem based Milliner, Evetta Petty, of Harlem’s Heaven Hat Shop showed an exciting collection of hats, during Fashion Week. It was held on Wednesday evening, Feb. 17 at The XL Lounge in the luxurious “The Out Hotel” in midtown Manhattan. It was packed with fashionistas and supporters of this Fashion

Showcase for Charity. Three designers of color participated in the showcase. Harlem’s Heaven Hats, Eliz Jewelry, and Chulo Men’s Underwear.

It was a fun evening of fashion, dance, and spoken word.

The hats were truly fantasy pieces, featuring big red silk roses, burgundy feathers, and orange silk butterflies. The finale was a black angel hat

with wings. Evetta showed a broad range of creativity with this collection and it was very well received. Evetta wants everyone to wear hats this Spring.

Why Aren’t We Discussing Voter Suppression During an Election Year?

There are many peculiar things about the 2016 election cycle, but one of them is what is not being discussed.

There are two items that immediately jump to mind and, believe it or not they both have to do with elections. The first is, that in the state of Michigan, there have been a series of silent coups taking place in which Black-majority cities are losing control over their own affairs to a White, Republican Governor Snyder who intervenes supposedly in order to address various crises. This matter most recently became very public in the context of the travesty surrounding the revelation of water poisoning in Flint, Michigan. In the recent past, Flint was run by an emergency manager appointed

by the governor.

Despite the existence of these silent coups, very little attention has surfaced in the mainstream media. Certainly part of the reason is that these are Black-majority cities in question and, as a result, the problem of the deprival of democracy can seem to only affect Black people. I hate to put it that way, but that is the reality of the situation.

The fact that these silent coups have been taking place, and yet there has been little to no outrage in nonblack communities, should alert us to a growing danger of declining democracy.

That these cities can be deprived of local control and, in effect, disenfranchise the voters, means that such an approach can be taken in

any city. This is not a problem limited to the situation facing African Americans. A precedent has been set and, as has been demonstrated time and again throughout the history of the United States, if the ruling elite—or a segment—wants to push through a nefarious measure, they first implement it in communities of color. Once it is successfully implemented in communities of color, there are no longer any arguments about its legitimacy when used more broadly.

The disenfranchisement of the Black vote in the South with Jim Crow at the turn of the 20th century, which ended up disenfranchising much of the poor White vote, is a case in point.

Yet here we are in an election year, and there has been near silence about this effort to suppress the black vote.

These silent coups should be added to other mean-spirited efforts to restrict the ability of citizens to vote. Using the duplicitous suggestion of widespread voter fraud, the Republicans have whipped up a panic—largely among whites—about alleged il-

legitimate voters affecting election outcomes. While the chances of voter fraud are less than the chance of being hit by lightning, the Republicans have met with success in moving various onerous steps to restrict voting times, days, as well as eligibility. These efforts gained renewed Republican vigor in the aftermath of the 2008 election of President Obama.

What a coincidence!

Here we are in the 2016 and this suppression of democracy has received almost no attention from the candidates. While I would not expect the Republicans to highlight their own authoritarian moves, it is curious that this has not been a central theme for either Senator Sanders or former Secretary of State Clinton.

Apparently the conclusion is that we, the voters, will have to make this central to the 2016 election cycle.

Be Prepared to Buy Now

ith almost two months of the year now behind us, the home buying season is heating up. First quarter new home sales are exceeding all projected goals. You are going to have to become mortgage ready very quickly to purchase a home this year. Most lenders are getting caught up in this home buying frenzy and have introduced new enhanced mortgage products to the market to assist first time low to moderate income buyers.

You must have enough money saved for the down payment and closing costs.

You must also have a solid credit history. Most lenders will require a minimum of 24 months clean credit history.

They will usually require you to have at least three active lines of credit. If you do not have three active accounts, some lenders will accept letters from non-traditional lines of credit to establish a payment history such as your rent, utilities or cell phone companies.

Your credit score can be another concern. Many first time mortgage products will require a minimum credit score of 650.

Here are some suggestions to help you increase your score: (1) always pay your bills on time. Late payments will lower your score. It might help to use an automatic payment system, if you get too busy to send in the payment. (2) Pay more than the minimum amount. Paying more than the

minimum amount will help to reduce the outstanding balance faster. (3) Keep your balance to about 30% of your overall credit limit. This will indicate you can use your credit wisely. (4) Only open new credit accounts when necessary. An inquiry is made every time you apply for a new account, which will lower your score. (5) Keep your accounts active by regularly using them. The Legends of Harlem Lecture Series - Impact of Historic Restaurants By Christy Williams “The Legends of Harlem Lecture Series’ was moderated

by Tren’ness Woods-Black and featured a panelist that included Mr. Kenneth Woods – Sylvia’s, Ms. Debra Wallace – Wells Supper Club, Ms. Michelle Marsh – Copelands and Ms. Mona Lopez – Showmans Jazz Club.

The world famous Sylvia’s has served as a meeting spot from local community leaders to presidential candidates. Kenneth

In 1978, Al and Jessie Howard opened this lounge and legendary performers like Jimmie “Preacher” Roberts, Pearl Baily and Count Basie have performed in this historic lounge. She attributes the success of Showman’s to respecting the business and the people that work in the establishment. Showman’s is more like a family atmosphere.

Ms. Debra Wallace had a unique affiliation with the Well’s family who owned and operated another historic restaurant, Wells Supper Club. She met Mrs. Wells when she was a young patron and became reacquainted after many years. She spoke of how Mr. Wells attributed his success to hard work and a good sense of people and he believed in giving the people what they wanted. He

He spoke of Johnson’s Luncheonette, where his mother waitressed and how his mother didn’t believe in taking out loans or credit. Whatever she wanted, she purchased through money she saved. Sylvia believed that you should educate the young and bring them into the business.

She was very meticulous and at a time in the 80’s when businesses were leaving Harlem, Sylvia was offered the opportunity to purchase the building next to where her restaurant was. She bought it! His brother Van is credited as being the “Visionary” for Sylvia’s diversified successes.

Maintaining the Harlem legacy is really important to him. His advice to young business owners/entrepreneurs is that they

must love people. Kenneth said something very poignant to the audience, “Pay rent to the real estate even after becoming the landlord.”

Ms. Michelle Marsh represented the Historic Copeland’s Restaurant. When asked why she was the perfect person to represent Copeland’s, Mr. Copeland started Reliable Catering with only $750 in 1970. The catering business was very successful.

6 Million Migrated and 60 Paintings Told the Story

he post slavery phenomena of The Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to the North was called “one of the largest and most mass internal movements in history” by Professor Nicholas Lemann, Professor of Journalism at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Artist Jacob Lawrence put The Great Migration in pictures, painting a series of works depicting different aspects of the migration, including its effect on the South, such as his painting of dry crops and soil because of the loss of labor. Even more astounding than the 60-piece series is the fact that this artist completed the series in 1941 when he was only 23 years old.

Other interesting facts about the series are that 1) the paintings were done in tempera

and 2) in order to maintain a consistency in style, color and form, Jacob Lawrence worked on all 60 paintings at the same time. He shows us crowded train stations, families walking with their belongings in sacks thrown over their shoulders, he shows us citizens of foreign countries returning home and more. The series captures freedom visually as well as capturing historic massive change.

MOMA exhibited this series from April 3, 2015 to June 9, 2015 entitled one way ticket. It is surely one of the largest artist documentation of American History as well as African American History. Works by Jacob Lawrence are in the collections of MOMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, the University of Washington, and some of his works are on display in

Meany Hall for the Performing Arts. In particular his painting “Theatre” that was commissioned for the space. His work is also in the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering. His last commissioned work was installed in New York’s Times Square Subway Station. It is a mosaic entitled New York in Transit.

Jacob Lawrence was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey

and, as with most artists, his love for Art manifested in his youth. His family moved to Harlem when he was 13. His mother enrolled him in the Utopia House Settlement Arts and craft classes. Despite the fact that he later dropped out of school at 16 years of age and began working, he never lost his love for or interest in art and led a life of accomplishments. He researched African

American History at the 135th Street library, took Art lessons from talented teachers Charles Alston, Augusta Savage and Henry Bannarn and married artist Gwendolyn Knight. Jacob Lawrence also served on the first integrated crew of the Coast Guard’s USCGC Sea Cloud and often sketched while he served. Mr. Lawrence and his wife moved to Washington in 1970. His life is inspiring from beginning to end. Mr. Lawrence continued to paint up until a few weeks before his death on June 9, 2000. He was 82.

For a time, it was assumed that because she was enslaved that she was illiterate, influencing her need to create images to convey a story. However, historian Kyra Hicks did extensive research on Harriet Powers and confirmed that Harriet Powers was literate, having

been taught to read with the help of the white children of the family she was owned by. A book entitled “This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers Bible Quilt and Other Pieces, by Kyra Hicks is available at numerous bookstores and museums.

An Appreciation of Life

A

s many of you may know I had an accident a few weeks ago and I am currently at a rehab facility on 112th Street and Amsterdam Avenue called the Amsterdam House.

It has been an interesting experience. I have a thigh to ankle cast on both legs which makes it difficult to get around. All things happen for a reason and one of the benefits of my current situation has been the opportunity to reflect on many of the things that we often take for granted;

like going to the bathroom without help.

We often think about the many obstacles in our lives, we have anxiety about reaching our future goals or we allow thoughts of the past to cause depression, we are very seldom in the present, and we very seldom appreciate the little things in life like going to the bathroom or just waking up in the morning and getting out of bed without help. The few weeks that I have been in rehab at Amsterdam House has allowed me to appreciate these very simple things in life.

I have no doubt that I will leave Amsterdam House with a greater appreciation of life. This experience is allowing me to practice two important Taoist concepts: “Happiness and Healing are both internal”. Nothing outside of self can truly make you happy and all healing starts from within. These concepts may not be easy to process but if you are given the opportunity to internalize the wisdom of these two concepts you will develop a better appreciation of life.

Unconditional love is the greatest healing energy that we all have. It is

truly a gift from the mind of the universe. It is for this reason if you ever find yourself on the mend from an accident or illness do your best to stay positive.

Try not to allow yourself to sink into the darkness of negative thoughts. Fear and doubt will delay your healing, take it from me as I am currently putting this theory into practice.

No situation is all bad.

Look for the benefit that can be found in any tragedy. It might not always be easy to find, but if you look hard enough you will be able to find something of benefit and when you find that light let it over-

come your darkness.

It is my hope that perhaps one person will read this and find a way to rise from the negative dark thoughts that often attach themselves with illness or tragedy and bring the healing light of unconditional love to themselves or someone close to them.

If it was not for my accident I would not have had the insight to write this dialogue, so if it can be of benefit to someone it will reinforce my belief that all things happen for a reason and with faith one can bring light to any dark issue.

Connect to Nature, No Matter Where You Live

n this age of smartphones and streaming video, it is easy to forget about the world beyond our little screens. And for the 80 percent of Americans living in urban areas, the natural world can seem even more remote.

But experts say it’s important to find the time to disconnect, unplug, and appreciate what nature does for you.

Surprisingly, you don’t have to travel outside your town to enjoy nature or benefit from it.

“Your very own neighborhood is likely home to a wide variety of trees,” says Lisa Allen, Missouri State Forester and chair of the National Association of State Foresters (NASF) urban and community forestry committee. “From your backyard to the park, trees offer residents improved quality of life and a healthier local environment.”

But trees are at risk from a number of threats, such as invasive pests. So a healthy community forest doesn’t exist without proper planning, management and community investment. Fortunately for urban dwellers, thousands of communities nationwide understand the need for green infrastructure, and are actively working with their state forestry agency to manage these landscapes.

Beyond enjoying the trees around you, you can get involved by helping to raise awareness about the many benefits trees offer. Start a local eco-appreciation society, get involved in local street cleanups, or ask your children’s school to incorporate environmental education into the curriculum. Lastly, stay current on community forestry issues.

Are You As Healthy As You Think?

his week’s article is a gentle reminder, from me to you, to take care of yourself. It may sound like a very simple concept: Taking care of yourself may sound like a very simple concept, and many of us think that we do, but we really don’t. We work out for a stronger, healthier body. We take the time for manicure’s, pedicure’s, facials, waxing, going to the beauty shop . . . all the things that help us to create the appearance that everything is in order. Looking waxed, buffed, polished and spit-shined on the outside just isn’t enough. How

about your insides? Are your tissues pink and healthy?

Have you done everything possible to insure that your veins and arteries, your muscles . . . and all your vital organs are functioning at optimum capacity? And yes, have you checked for lumps, bumps, lesions and other abnormalities? If you haven’t then shame on you! The one thing you should never do is to play games with your health. Your physical, mental and emotional well-being are essential to the quality of your life. So, the reminder . . . Take Care of Yourself!

Maybe you have lost a friend, relative or know of someone who has battled, is battling or survived a health challenge. Maybe you have

had to deal with a challenge of your own yourself. One thing is for sure; it might be scary to think about the possibility of having an issue but even scarier is . . . not knowing. There is no excuse for not assuming the responsibility for your own health.

Don’t stop reading now. I know that you know what I am talking about! We tend to ignore health issues until it happens to happen to us.

Why is it that we have to wait for a “Disease Awareness Month” to think seriously about any aspect of our health? Maintaining your health is a full time, year round job. You owe it to yourself to take the time to maintain your insides as well as you do your outside. If you aren’t afraid to change your hair color or consider

losing a few pounds by embarking on a weight-training program, than surely you can take a few precious moments out of one day in 364 to be good to yourself by getting a mammogram. Your breasts . . . no your family, friends and most importantly, you will be relieved and happy even, that you did.

Now, I don’t know you personally and you don’t know me, but woman to woman . . . Please take care of yourself! Be a good friend; remind your BFF to take care of herself! Stop thinking that it happens to everybody else . . . it can happen to you.

Are you any wiser about the many people that paved the way for us?

On WHCR daily newscasts there were daily references to people in history that you never would have heard of.

Isn’t it great to celebrate Black History with the addition of so many people to our investigation and celebration besides the usual folks that we were taught about in school. In church we had Black History Services, but for a long time it was the same folk year after year. Finally, in the fullness of time, many church schools began seeking out more black pioneers in many

The service, beginning at 3:30pm will feature the Men of Tabernacle presenting “The Fruit of the Spirit. The men of Tabernacle are led by Rev. Joseph T. Bright, Jr. their Pastor.

The Men’s Day Celebration will be on Sunday, March 13th beginning at 11:00am. Rev. Isaiah Owens will be the guest preacher.

ou know your own mind.

After thinking things through, you have your opinions and while you’re willing to listen to what others say, you’re also willing to defend what you believe in. And, as in the new book “The Firebrand and the First Lady” by Patricia BellScott, your friends don’t necessarily have to agree with you.

Eleanor Roosevelt’s Camp Tera , nestled near New York ’s Hudson River , was initially meant to be a temporary, leg-up place for Depression-era women who were destitute and totally without resources. Though she was young, educated, and married, Pauli Murray was

Recovery-time aside, Murray ’s tenure at Camp Tera was beneficial: a friend had told her that Roosevelt answered all correspondence, and Murray took that to heart. In 1938, a few years after she was kicked out of Camp Tera for “disrespecting the first lady,” she wrote a protest letter to Roosevelt , requesting intercession in FDR’s stance on anti-lynching laws. Activism was Murray ’s passion and the answer she got wasn’t what she’d wanted but it did, as promised, come from Roosevelt .

Murray was born in 1910, the feisty granddaughter of a mulatto slave whose stories of injustice she grew up hear-

ing. Murray lost her mother when she was just three; a few years later, her father was institutionalized, then murdered; and her brother was lobotomized.

She, herself, had health problems and was often severely underweight; during one of her hospitalizations, she finally admitted that she was attracted to women, which was then considered to be a mental health issue.

It took awhile for Murray to tell Roosevelt all that. Before she did, and because of that first protest note, the two corresponded for years in letters that offered guidance, outrage, and rebuttal. The women didn’t always agree, but they always seemed to attempt

to understand one another’s take on issues. Murray supported Roosevelt in her widowhood. Roosevelt encouraged Murray in her activism.

It was a support that Murray imagined she felt long after Mrs. Roosevelt’s death.

I would not, under the broadest of terms, call “The Firebrand and the First Lady” a pleasure read.

That’s not to say that this book isn’t a pleasure – it’s just not something you’d pick up to relax with. Author Patricia BellScott goes deep into the politics and work of both Roosevelt and Murray (more the latter than the former) and that can be very dry. It’s informative - Bell-Scott tells a story that’s been largely hidden

for decades, about a woman who left her mark on social issues in many ways - but it’s far from lively.

Adding more details of Murray ’s personal life might’ve helped; that’s what I was hungriest for, but didn’t get enough of.

I think this is an important work of history and definitely worth reading but you’ll want to be in the mood for it, particularly if you usually like lots of energy in your stories.

If you’re a scholar or historian reading “The Firebrand and the First Lady,” though, the pace is some-

Don’t Blindly Accept Vision Loss: Your Guide to Glaucoma

the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) my patient roster includes many patients over the age of 65, which is often when people begin to notice changes in their vision and start asking questions about how to prevent glaucoma. Unfortunately, glaucoma is not preventable and vision loss from the disease is not reversible. Early detection however, does provide ways to protect your eyesight and prevent complete vision loss.

Here are a few tips our VNSNY teams share with our patients to help catch glaucoma early: Knowledge is Power: It is extremely important to understand the facts about the disease and ask your doctor the right questions. For example, make sure your ophthalmologist looks at the eye nerve and not just the more common diagnoses of

high eye pressure. Also, know your risk factors for the disease.

Among people who are at an increased risk for glaucoma are African Americans, Latinos and those with diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

Get Screened: It is important to complete regularly scheduled eye exams every six to 12 months for those patients over the age of 65. Additionally, make sure to get any kind of eye irritation checked out immediately.

Symptoms: While glaucoma symptoms develop slowly, and sometimes not at all, some symptoms to look out for can include: Hazy vision Trouble reading Peripheral Vision Loss Sudden sight loss Loss of contrast sensitivity (the ability to see shades of the

same color) Problems with glare Light sensitivity Once diagnosed, it is extremely important to make some lifestyle changes to help you stay safe at home and on track with your treatment.

Make a Schedule: Write down the name, dosage, and number of times your medications should be taken each day.

It’s also important to space out treatments. Develop a regimen to make your medications part of your daily routine, administering them in the morning, at night, or during meals.

Learn Eye-Drop Installation: It is extremely important to put eye drops in correctly, as they are usually the main form of treatment for glaucoma. It can be extremely difficult to apply drops properly, especially if living alone. Due to these

challenges, it can be helpful to have the assistance of home health aides, such as those at Partners in Care, a licensed home care agency that is a part of VNSNY. A home health aide or family caregiver can help ensure that correct drops dosages are administered, and that both the eye lids and lashes are kept clean. It is also beneficial to keep your eyes closed for two minutes after receiving the drops, to ensure effectiveness of the medication.

Living with Impairment: While life with glaucoma may be an adjustment, there are a variety of tools and resources that can help you cope and maintain a comfortable level of vision. I usually recommend patients get magnifiers or computer text enlargers to reduce stress caused from frequent squinting and straining to read. Additionally,

if you happen to have one, iPads and other large-screen tablets have been known to enhance visual clarity as they allow for a high contrast, crisp display.

While there is no cure yet for glaucoma and vision loss cannot be regained, there are treatment options that can help preserve visual function. It is important to remember to always communicate with your entire care team if something seems amiss with your vision.

We recommend that all our patients over the age of 65 make regularly scheduled visits to the ophthalmologist a regular part of their routine healthcare maintenance.

BCA’s 2016 SU-CASA Program Brings Art to Seniors in the Bronx

SU-CASA is a collaboration among the NYC Council, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) the NYC Department for the Aging (DFTA) and the city’s five local arts councils: Bronx Council on the Arts, Brooklyn Arts Council, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Queens Council on the Arts and Staten Island Arts. The program began as SPARC (Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide) in 2012 and was developed as part of Age-Friendly NYC, a citywide effort to make the City more livable for seniors. The newly-expanded program is funded in FY16 by the NYC Council.

Emmitt Thrower introduces “Seniortude: Living Life Artfully”, an interactive program at E. Robert Moore Senior Center, where he will produce an artistic video clip and live performance of participants’ experiences, talents, concerns and creative thoughts. Gina Clark, placed at Riverdale YMYWHA, will lead a fiction writing workshop.

In another writing residency, Wallace Boyd will lead seniors at Coop City Senior Center in “The New York City Senior Memoir Writing Project”, that will gather the rich stories of New York City’s elders and share them in neighbor-

hoods across the City.

On a musical note, Margo Brooks will lead her project “The Soundtrack of Lives” at Neighborhood Shopp CASA Boricua ISC. It is a delightful project of popular music and soulful tunes along with dramatic storytelling and comedy.

Keeping it warm and snug, Ruth Marshall will lead “My Comfort Blanket” at RAIN Boston Secor NSC, where participants will create their own personalized blanket. Richard Grunn will introduce senior participants at PSS City Island Senior Center to “Radio Theater” that will be based on original short pieces written by workshop attendees.

year with Walter Rutledge Jr. in his project “Those Were the Days My Friend” at Morris Park Senior Center. The residency will focus on designing a dance and theater performance based on the experience and interests of senior participants. At RAIN Bailey, participants will explore movement and swing dance with Rebecca Lloyd Jones’ “Sharing Story and History through Movement and Dance.”

Sarah Horne will introduce site-specific dance performances tailored to the capabilities of each senior at PSS Davidson NSC in her residency “What Moves You.” “Adventures in Clay Making” with Jo-

sephine Gonzalez will explore clay techniques and glazing, drawing on inspiration from clay creations from various cultures from around the world at Kips Bay Castle Hill SC. he Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) is proud to announce the selection of artists for the 2016 SU-CASA (previously SPARC) program. Ten talented Bronx artists will deliver arts programming to Bronx seniors centers across our borough. These local artists are providing a fun and interactive atmosphere for seniors to acquire creative skills, ranging from dance to theater to writing to knitting and more.

This initiative connects artists with seniors in senior center settings and positively impacts the well-being of older adults through multidisciplinary arts activities.

SU-CASA supports artists and organizations who are sensitive to the needs of older adults and who are interested in engaging their communities. Each senior center is unique and offers access to different types of spaces, resources and communities. Selected artists will work with the senior center population where they are placed and further refine project goals and coordinate a schedule for 60 hours of residency. 16 Bronx Senior Centers will have residencies of individual Bronx Artists and arts organizations.

2016 marks the first year that arts organizations have been eligible to apply for placement in the program. This year 10 Bronx artists were matched and placed to

The Queens International Night Market debuted in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Spring 2015. One of the most unique and attractive features of the Night Market, in addition to its nighttime operating hours, is the general $5 price cap on food, which helps ensure the event is accessible and affordable for as broad an audience as possible.
