What’s more, there may be some distractions because life often gets in the way, but good habits are a necessity. So let’s start our day off in the right direction with a morning power routine. Here are two simple things that you can do to overcome the life-in-the-way dilemma.

1. When you first wake up, you are at your most sensitive and highly impressionable stage. Stop

the habit of checking your email and messages first thing in the morning. Instead, you should prioritize. Use the first 60 - 90 minutes and create a routine or ritual for something important that is conducive to keeping you healthy and fit. If you intentionally use the first part of the day for morning exercising, meditation, practice yoga, or doing breathing exercises and follow up with eating a healthy breakfast (fresh fruit is always good) and quiet your mind, you will develop a vision for what is essential to do for the

day.

2. When you actually start your working day, for the first couple of hours focus only on those activities that are high-value and productive. Check your to-do list and tackle those things that will yield you big returns both now and in the future.

In the world of businesses these will be marketing, improving your product or service, and working on your client/customer list. However, in most cases there are messages and emails that require attention, and people who are demanding your time, so

the important stuff actually gets placed on the back burner.

If you can organize your day investing the first couple of early day work hours so that the important jobs get done first, the ones that actually make you money and the other jobs take second place, it becomes a game changer.

A quick foot note: It is also important to note that you need to take a break within the day to re-energize and recharge your batteries. Have some quiet moments within the day, listen to motivating music, go for a

walk, eat a nourishing meal, and surround yourself with positive people. These will help ward off any upsetting energies that weigh you down, so you can continue making progress throughout the day.

Be Prepared to Buy Now

ome great home buying opportunities still exist in Harlem, especially in the area of Housing Development Fund Corporation Cooperatives (HDFC) coop units. However, most of these units required a 20% down payment. Therein is the problem for most prospective first time buyers. They do not have all of the money required for the down payment. They have not been able to adequately save enough money for the down payment because of their monthly rent and other living expenses.

The majority of these units are designed for the low to moderate income buyer. But there is a catch involved with this purchase, making it extremely difficult to complete.

If, your annual income exceeds

the limit usually 80-120% of the area median income (AMI) you make too much money and are ineligible to purchase the unit. On the other hand, if you meet the income limit, you do not have the money saved for the down payment.

Most first time buyers with income below 80% AMI are eligible for the Home First Down Payment Assistance grant program through New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

But there are still some additional requirements that must be met in order to apply for this grant: (1) be a first time home buyer; (2) buy in New York City; (3) complete the home buyer education workshop. HCCI is an authorized housing counseling

Here is another problem that the first time buyer has to overcome, not every bank is an authorized lender with HPD. Only a few of the authorized lenders will approve an HDFC mortgage. So finding a lender who will approve an HDFC unit is significantly reduced, which in turn reduces the probability of being eligible for the Home First grant program.

Troy Powell Leads Ailey II to New Heights

Ailey’s Children Program also prevented Powell from falling prey to the neighborhood. “I grew up in East Harlem, which, at the time, where there was a lot of violence, a lot of drugs, and a lot of gangs. Luckily for me, I was supported by my family, I was the youngest of seven. I had a mother who supported seven kids and supported my dreams of dancing.

I loved it, she loved it, and we didn’t have the means to pay for a private school, or attend a dance school that charged thousands of dollars.”

That Harlem kid has now grown to be the director of Ailey II. What are some of his duties? “I wear a lot of hats…my main duty is most of the artistic stuff, trying to really encourage this young artists…We are human beings first, we are dancers second.”

What can we expect from the upcoming program, with all dancers handpicked by Powell in the same way he was by Ailey himself? “Both programs are very diverse,” he said, before elaborating on the programs.

The All New Program features choreography by Kyle “JustSole” Clark, Jean Emile, Ray Mercer, and Ailey dancer Jamar Roberts. “This is

the first time that Ailey II is really doing a hip-hop piece,” said of one of the pieces in the All New Program. The Returning Favorites Program features hits from recent seasons by choreographers Jennifer Archibald, Dwight Rhoden, and Manuel Vignoulle.

“Both programs are different from each other,” Powell noted, meaning that you dance lovers will have to set aside two nights to enjoy the excellence of Ailey II. “It’s important that we show people different forms and different techniques.”

Finally, I asked Powell if he still performs. “I can still do it…part of my responsibility is full time, so I don’t perform anymore,” adding “I left as a full-time dancer in 2001. I’m more on the outside of dancing.” But Powell still has a desire to get on stage. “I really miss it. I miss it a lot…I do want to be able to start performing.” I get the feeling we have not seen the last of Troy Powell on stage despite his many tasks as artistic director. roy Powell is a native of Harlem who has spent a lifetime within the arts. He began his study with the institution as an adolescent, has performed with the company as an adult, and now is the artistic director of Ailey II. Harlem News spoke exclusively with the pioneer in the dance world on the heels of Ailey II’s performances March 30 – April 10 at Ailey Citigroup Theater.

We discussed Powell’s origins within the company. “I was actually handpicked by Mr. Ailey when I was nine and it was the most wonderful opportunity.” Powell continued, saying “he came to my elementary school in New York City in Spanish Harlem.

Little did I know that it was an audition!” Powell excelled in the audition, and was accepted into Ailey’s Children Program. “We accepted the offer and we studied at Ailey from fifth grade to eighth grade.”

Powell discussed how the opportunity helped him in numerous ways in addition to the dance instruction. “I was actually getting out of the neighborhood. It was almost like a class trip, me going, three times a week from Harlem to Times Square.” Studying in the children’s program taught Powell life lessons that are with him today. “It really gave me discipline and it really

When Women Lead, Companies Often Prosper

O

ften I am interviewed and asked about successful women in the workplace and my views on being one of the few to break the glass ceiling in the technology sector. My response has always been that I never saw a glass ceiling, so I did not provide myself an excuse not to break through it.

But various articles and statistics about women in leadership roles in the United States do prove that there is a disparity of women leaders in the workplace.

Currently, The Fortune 500 is led by only 25 female CEOs. In a recent study conducted

by Pew Research Center, 34 percent of respondents surveyed believe that

male executives are better than women executives at assuming risk.

Moreover, when asked about specific industries women could support, a significant portion felt that men would do a better job leading technology, finance, and oil and gas companies, whereas women would be strongest at running retail and food companies.

Although that survey bleeds traditional stereotyping of women, you still need to ask yourself: “Why aren’t more women promoted into the CEO position, but rather held back?” Historically, it seems that women do not have the consistent high-ranking executive sponsorship who

campaign for their advancement. Why is this?

As a gender, women are more than half the population and therefore leaping at the opportunity to prove themselves in the workplace. Often, they are out working men to earn 75 cents to every dollar their male counterparts earn for the same job.

Although women can keep up with the rigorous pace and workload at the office, maybe they can’t keep up with the social politics of the perceived “Good Old Boys Club.” Because of a lack of women in leadership roles, and the desire for career progression, women’s perceived need of survival overtakes their

personality or natural disposition to be a leader.

Typically in these scenarios, women will lose their strengths in an attempt to over compensate for not being equal or the same to men. Throughout my career I have heard more commentary about a woman’s disposition in a meeting or board room than I ever heard of a man’s.

Women are considered harsh or manlike if they speak up to their peers, and are considered weak and a follower if they don’t. Women are left in a quandary.

They are discussed, judged and evaluated every time they open their mouths.

Recent studies show

that a diversified executive team will produce up to 34 percent more revenue to a corporation than an executive team filled with the same gender. Corporations and stockholders are beginning to recognize the need for more gender balance within companies. This is leading them to adapt policies to stray away from the perceived “Good Old Boys Club” and create a more neutral friendly working environment to all minorities.

With the backing of corporate stockholders, women now have an opportunity to take accountability and remain true to themselves while engaging with peer groups.

Women will only succeed if they demonstrate the will and power to not act like a man, but leverage their natural gifts: honesty, teamwork, compassion and persuasion.

The event featured a “Business Pitch event” and Atinuke Akinwunmi won

the business pitch competition sponsored by Women in the Black. Picked by a panel that included President Princess Jenkins, (who is also owner of Harlem’s The Brownstone) and Director Harriet Rosebud, (who is owner of Rosebud New York), Akinwunmi earned a $500 prize for giving the winning pitch for her business PurH20, beating out about 15 others who sub-

mitted their pitches as well.

Another highlight of the event was a photo shoot, as each and every business owner took a picture that will appear in this week’s paper, introducing her and her business to the community. Later in the event, all of the women in attendance gathered for one epic photograph that is featured on the cover of this week’s issue.

After the photo, the ladies

sat down for lunch, which featured baked chicken, salmon, salad, string beans, and something called Kingston Glazed Carrots that I couldn’t get enough of, also provided by J Rose Catering.

I met numerous women throughout the event and connected with some that I already knew, but one story stood out. I met Anngeannette Pinkston, CEO/President of SKII Magazine, a

magazine about celebrities and entrepreneurs that she launched July 2014. “Thursday was my first time attending,” she said of the event, adding “it was a wonderful affair...I would like to thank the owner of Harlem News for having such an elaborate event for women! Pinkston is a retired New York Police Department detective with 21 years on the force.

On a personal note, as a live-long Harlemite, I have read about this annual event in the pages of Harlem News since its inception. When I began my journey with Harlem Community Newspapers in 2014, I was excited over the possibility of being involved in this event. To be able to attend this event for the second year in a row was truly an honor. Indeed, Black, Asian, and Latina women rock, and they own businesses in Harlem and

The Bridge

I have now been in rehab for 45 days and it has been a very enlightening experience.

It has allowed me to test my internal healing abilities. During my years of martial arts training and during the time I trained to become a Taoist master in South Korea I learned techniques that allowed me to improve and bring balance to my mind, body and spirit. My past training has been a major factor in my ability to address this current ex-

perience but I am not sure if anything could have prepared me for the last 45 days.

The cast on both my legs are off and now the really hard work will begin; learning to walk again. This is a very painful therapy because after having both legs straight for so long they become stiff and very hard to bend.

The mind can entertain

thoughts of darkness or thoughts of light.

Thoughts of positive light will allow the healing spiritual energy to pass though the mind to strengthen and heal the body.

I am sharing this experience with you because I have been able to put theory into practice. Positive thoughts are healing; negative thoughts block spiritual energy and can be destructive to the healing balance of mind, body and spirit. If you are reading this article you might be experiencing some type of emotional or physical

pain; you might also be wondering “why is this happening to you?” I suggest that you embrace your pain as an opportunity for mental and spiritual growth.

Try to keep your thoughts positive and allow your mind to become a bridge between the spiritual world of the universal mind and your physical body.

Do not allow fear and doubt to attract negative low frequency dark thoughts. If you can do this you will find ways to overcome you physical or emotional pain. Not only

will you become a better person but you will be able to become a positive influence to others without trying to.

There is a saying that all things are beneficial, a very difficult concept to embrace but with faith you can allow your mind to become a bridge for spiritual and physical development and healing; if you can do this your ability to embrace this concept will be less difficult; take it from someone who is not just talking but will soon be walking, it works.

rom time to time I like to remind you to stop and smell the roses. There are many opportunities do so, but we tend to try and accomplish too many tasks, obligations and responsibilities within the limited number of hours we have each day. For the sake of this week’s article I am going to call those aforementioned tasks etc . . . “noise.” The “noise” is a constant din that forces itself into our consciousness and pushes us to keep up with the “Status-flow.”

It is because the world

can sometimes be a very noisy place that I thought it would be interesting to consider the beauty of silence.

In addition to the pressure that is imposed upon us to keep things moving, think for a moment about all the other “noise” each of us contributes to the environment: cell phones, loud conversations, boom boxes, laughter, the click of our heels on the pavement and even something completely natural like a sneeze! It all adds up to overload!

Now thinking about silence or anything resembling quiet can be a bit unnerving when you live in a city like New York.

I recall a trip to London, another hubbub of activity; but it is a very different city. Although the streets are bustling with activity, the noise was missing!

There weren’t any loud boom boxes, or rowdy young folks being well . . . young. People almost whispered their conversations to one another . . . there weren’t even any crying babies. Everyone seemed to be so . . . quiet!

It caught me by surprise.

Bishop Mary Freeman is the Pastor and Bishop William Anderson is the Assistant Pastor. Seven last sayings by Christ from the cross was the order of the evening. Seven preachers all expounding on the Seven Last Sayings.

Following that service we went to the Universal Temple of Spiritual Truth on 111 West 136th Street,

where Bishop James Bryant is the Pastor.

Bishop Bryant conducted a foot washing service. He washed the feet of the congregation in an extreme, Christ-like, symbol of humility and service.

The high service lasted until 2:00am! God got the Glory, Honor and Praise.

It was a great effort to keep up with Rev. Lisa D. Jenkins, Pastor of St. Matthew’s Baptist Church in Harlem.

Rev. Jenkins preached at three different services, with a different saying from the cross!

Wow! The sister is a fireball!

Rev. D’Eugene Rodgers, Pastor of Solomon Temple Baptist Church also had a beautiful afternoon service.

We visited Sunrise services on Resurrection Sunday at Trinity Baptist Church and Franklin Avenue Baptist Church.

Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, 350 East 165th Street, the Bronx, will present a Gospel Comedy Show on Friday, April 8th beginning at 7:30pm. Rev. James Morrison is the Pastor.

In South Africa, in the prison where Nelson Mandela was held, she learned that apologies are nice, but a phone call to a prisoner’s mother does even more.

In Uganda, where overcrowding leads to horrific conditions and corruption is “endemic,” she learns that prisoners are hungry for beauty in words. In Thai-

land, she toured women’s prisons where guards are required to know women by their names and faces, not their numbers. She visited Australia, which began as a penal colony; Singapore, a “Disneyland with a death penalty” and an exciting reentry program; and Norway, where prisoners can “spend up to half” their sentences off-premises.

When “Incarceration Nations” first crossed my desk, I expected to read horror story after horror story but, surprisingly,

Dreisinger uses her experiences as the founder of the Prison-to-College Pipeline program in New York to show how punishment is more effective if there’s a glint of hope tied up in it.

If you’re willing, in other words, to misbehave or break the law, you need to be willing to face consequences. But what if the crime doesn’t match the punishment? What if your sentence doesn’t have a period at the end? Or what if, as you’ll see in “Incarceration Nations” by Baz Dreisinger, you didn’t commit a crime at all?

As a white Jewish English professor who focuses on African American cultural studies and is passionate about working with about-to-be released prisoners, Baz Dreisinger says she’s used to surprising people. Her “peculiar blend of identities” is unique – and so was her idea of a two-year journey to visit prisons around the world.

The statistics that spurred her are “devastating:” More than 2 million people are behind bars in America, making the U.S. the “world’s largest jailer.”

There are more African Americans in jail today than were enslaved 166 years ago; one in fourteen black men is incarcerated in the States. American prisons hold 160,000 “lifers,” as compared to fewer than sixty lifers in Australia.

America’s prison model, says Dreisinger, is exported around the world. But the world, as she discovered, altered those plans.

In Rwanda, where violence between Hutus and Tutsis horrified us a gener-

Kings County’s Finest Honored as “Brooklyn Best”

O

n Wednesday, March 16, friends and family joined City Councilman Robert E. Cornegy at Grandchamp Kitchen and Market, 197 Patchen Ave, in honoring a few unsung heroes who are doing incredible works within the Bedford Stuyvesant community. “For all the tireless work each of you do, I thank you and love you”, said Councilman Cornegy, corporately acknowledging the commitment each honorary has made to their community and people in general.

The Councilman was joined by Brooklyn Borough President Office’ Director of Business Development Josh Levin who was

accompanied by administrators Sean James and Karen Ford. The entourage present honorees Henry L. Butler, Darryl Copeland, Maxine and Lynworth Stephenson with citations on behalf of BP Eric Adams.

“I like to thank my wife and family for their support” said Civic Leader Honoree Henry Butler, who serves as Community Board 3’s District Manager. With his two sons Kevin and Miles looking on, Butler shared with the audience how his commitment and dedication to making a difference in the community he lives in is not for himself, but to make things easier for the next generation. Butler shared that his desire is to have

his sons “understand we are put on this earth to help one another. I want them to understand you have to be socially and politically engage if you truly want to bring about change…”

“It’s an honor to be able to give flowers to a per-

son while they can smell them,” stated Brooklyn’s Best Honors (BBH) Producer Keith L. Forest. “And Darryl Copeland certainly deserves his now.” Copeland, a trained vocal and talent coach who serves as the music director for BBH,

celebrated his induction by showcasing his talented students.

“Although it might not seem appropriate having such young adolescents attend an adult affair,” stated Copeland. “However, it is important that we expose them to different environment and allow them to get different experiences.” The evening included a glowing solo violin performance by Christina Deochand; positive lyrical rap by Shaqill Irving; and a solo performance by Donnai Peters who serenaded the crowd with her own stylized rendition of gospel singer Tosha Cobb’s “For Your Glory” Other honorees included husband and wife business

owners Maxine and Lynworth Stephenson. “We are honored to have been chosen as Brooklyn’s Best Honors honoree,” stated Maxine, who serves Chief Financial Officer for Zeen Inc. “You never know who is watching.”

Brooklyn’s Best Honors is an Urban ID Media production, a Brooklyn-based media and event-marketing agency. The quarterly receptions capture the wealth and diversity that profoundly exists in the County of Kings.

At the 2014 Academy Awards, Darlene sang her powerful acceptance speech on behalf of all of the performers in the winning documentary film, Twenty Feet From Stardom. As she raised the Oscar, the entire house stood with a cheering ovation lead by the wildly applauding Bill Murray.

It was another special moment in a great career. A GRAMMY Award soon followed for the soundtrack of the film.

Since the early sixties, as part of Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound hit factory,

Love has done it all-from major motion pictures like the highly successful Lethal Weapon series to Broadway hits like Hairspray and Grease. She also starred as herself in Leader of the Pack on the Great White Way, credited as Broadway’s first ‘jukebox musical.’ Darlene has appeared on numerous television programs, running the gamut from her weekly appearances on Shindig o a recent guest spot on the PBS special entitled Women Who Rock. An autobiographical film is currently on the drawing board with a development deal from Oprah Winfrey based on Love’s book, My Name is Love.

Darlene’s early career as lead singer for The Blossoms (who sang background vocals for The Righteous Brothers, Dionne Warwick, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis Presley, to name a few) set the stage for her emergence as a star.

Her Billboard hits include: “He’s A Rebel,” “The Boy I’m Gonna Marry,” “Wait ‘Til My Bobby Gets Home,” “He’s Sure the Boy I Love,” and the #1 holiday classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”, a song that she performed annually with Paul Shaffer and the CBS Symphony Orchestra on The Late Show With David Letter-

man for 29 years before David retired in 2015.

Darlene Love received her industry’s highest award when Bette Midler, a great fan of her work, inducted her into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During the celebration, the two ladies performed “He’s A Rebel” together. As part of the festivities, Darlene also sang “He’s A Fine, Fine Boy” backed by another distinguished fan, Bruce Springsteen.

Rolling Stone Magazine proclaimed Darlene Love to be “one of the greatest singers of all time” and that certainly rings true, but Paul Shaffer nailed it with greater veracity : “Darlene Love is Rock N’ Roll!”
