PORT AUTHORITY SETS RECORD FOR INCLUSION OF MINORITY, WOMEN-OWNED AND SMALL BUSINESS ENTERPRISES IN AGENCY CONTRACTS IN 2015

he percentage of Port Authority contract awards for Minority, Women-owned and Small Business Enterprises (MWSBEs) increased significantly in 2015, and represented nearly a quarter of all agency contract spending for that year, the Port Authority announced recently.

MWSBEs received $315 million worth of contracts last year, or 24 percent of total Port Authority contracts. This amount

reflects an increase of 18.3 percent and 17.3 percent over the prior two years, respectively.

“The 2015 MWSBE participation rate in agency projects reaffirms the Port Authority’s commitment to diversity and inclusion as the backbone of our regional economy,” said Lash Green, Director of the Port Authority’s Office of Business Diversity and Civil Rights. “I credit Governor Cuomo especially for setting

an MWSBE participation goal of 30 percent. By meeting this goal, our region and its small businesses together reap the fruits of a vital economy.”

Participating MWSBE businesses contribute substantial economic benefit to the Port District and the region, including supporting nearly 2,453 job-years and generating $154 million in wages and $531 million in regional economic activity.

This is what winning 70 + city contracts looks like.

The largest portion of the $315 million provided in 2015 came from Port Authority prime and sub-contracts, which totaled $195 million.

Roughly $66 million was from World Trade Center projects and $54 million from aviation tenants. Over the years of WTC rebuilding, approximately $1.3 billion worth of site contracts have gone to MWSBEs thus far.

taged Business Enterprises (DBE) activity from new WTC tenants and the agency’s partners on the Goethals Bridge Modernization Program and the George Washington Bridge Bus Station project yielded $72.5 million in awards, which boosts the $315 million amount to $387.5 million.

MWSBE programs are typically city or state designations, while DBEs are federal programs regulated by the U.S. Department of Trans-

portation.

The Port Authority also continues to build the pipeline of qualified businesses through its Mentor Protégé Program, an initiative to increase the number of certified businesses big enough to bid successfully on larger constructions projects. Fifteen MWSBEs participated in 2015, with 67 of the businesses having participated in the program since 2002.

RANGEL AND COMMUNITY LEADERS WEAR ORANGE TO CALL FOR END OF GUN VIOLENCE

C

ongressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents New York’s 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, joined New York State Assemblyman Keith Wright and leaders of the Harlem community to host a Wear Orange rally. The rally was part of a national initiative to call for an end to gun violence and to raise awareness about the issue by wearing orange.

“The Wear Orange campaign has united people all across our nation to stand up for gun safety,” said Rangel.

“Gun violence prevention is often pushed into the national spotlight after a tragedy has occurred, however, we must continue the conversation and the advocacy until we can put an end to the gun violence epidemic. We have suffered far too many of these traumatic events.”

Orange became the color of the movement to end gun violence after the 2013 shooting of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton. The Chicago high school student was tragically shot and killed just a week after she marched in President Barack Obama’s second inaugural parade.

Her friends chose the color orange, inspired by hunters that wear orange to distinguish themselves in the woods, to commemorate the life of their slain friend. June 2nd would have been Pendleton’s 19th birthday.

The panel discussion was followed by a screening of Brave New Film’s 2016 film, ‘Making A Killing: Guns, Greed and the NRA.’ The film takes an investigative look into the gun industry, recounting gun tragedies that include unintentional shootings, domestic violence, suicides, mass shootings and trafficking, and explores what can be done to end to this profit-driven crisis.

“I will continue to urge my colleagues to recognize the urgency of gun safety and to help protect anoth-

er life from being taken too early,” said Rangel. “There are commonsense measures that people on both sides of the issue can support.”

Rangel has repeatedly called for congressional action to prevent gun violence. On November 30, 2015, which marked the twenty-second anniversary of the enactment of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, Congressmen Charles Rangel and Hakeem Jeffries introduced H.R. 541, a Resolution that would designate the month of June as National Gun Violence Awareness Month. This would promote nationwide efforts to prevent shootings, especially during the summer months when crime spikes in most areas of the country. The Rangel-Jeffries bill follows the example of a similar resolution that was unanimously passed by the New York State Legislature as part of a five-year push to reduce gun

violence across the State. Since the first annual Gun Violence Awareness Month in June 2013, New York City has seen all violent and gun related crime reduced by 5.6%.

“Most of the gun violence in our State occurs in New York City, but this is not just a local issue,” added Rangel. “There are more than 285 million guns in circulation in this country. It’s a national problem that requires a national solution. The

n June 5, 1981, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a report on what would later be understood as the first documented cases of AIDS. The past 35 years tell a story that bends from uncertainty, fear, and loss toward resilience, innovation, and hope.

We’ve learned that stigma and silence don’t just fuel ignorance, they foster transmission and give life to a plague. We’ve seen that testing, treatment, education, and acceptance can not only save and extend lives, but fight the discrimination that halted progress for too long. And we’ve reaffirmed that most American of ideas - that ordinary citizens can speak out, band ourselves together like a breathtaking quilt, and change the course of our communities and our nation for the better.

Over these 35 years, American ingenuity and

leadership has shaped the world’s response to this crisis. From the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program to the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), we’ve saved millions of lives at home and around the world. My administration implemented our nation’s first comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy, and we’ve updated it through 2020.

We’ve invested in research and evidence-based practices that have given us revolutionary tools like treatment as prevention and pre-exposure prophylaxis. We’ve made critical investments to help eliminate waiting lists for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program. We’ve continued efforts to support the promise of a vaccine. And the Affordable Care Act has resulted in millions of individuals gaining affordable, high-quality health coverage – all without de-

While there is more work to do – the economically disadvantaged; gay and bisexual men, especially those who are young and Black; women of color; and transgender women all continue to face huge disparities – I’m confident that if we build upon the steps we’ve taken, we can finish the job.

Nearly five years ago, I said that an AIDS-free generation is within reach, and today, the global community is committed to ending this epidemic by 2030.

This will take American leadership, smart investments, and a commitment to ensure that all communities are heard and included as we move forward.

So today, let’s call the names. Let’s remember those we lost too soon.

And let’s rededicate ourselves to ending this epidemic once and for all.

O’Melveny Honored NY Scholarship Winners at Tweed Courthouse Ceremony

O

’Melveny awarded college scholarships to 15 talented public high school juniors from across New York City at the firm’s 14th Annual New York Scholarship Awards ceremony on May 25th at the Tweed Courthouse. For the third year running, the ceremony featured remarks from New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, who has praised O’Melveny’s program as a “phenomenal” model for the private sector’s support of public education.

O’Melveny’s New York Scholarship Program partners with the Fund for Public Schools and the New York City Department of Education to encourage high school juniors who demonstrate the

firm’s values of excellence, leadership, and a commitment to community service to continue to excel. Each year, the firm provides scholarships to three students from a public high school in each of the five boroughs: Bronx Leadership Academy High School, Brooklyn’s Benjamin Banneker Academy for Community Development, Manhattan’s Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change, Queens’ High School for Arts and Business, and Staten Island’s Curtis High School.

The Program has awarded nearly US$1.5 million to New York City public high school students since its inception in 2003, and O’Melveny has awarded more than US$9 million in scholarships globally

since 1992, when the firm began awarding scholarships in honor of O’Melveny’s former Chairman and later Secretary of State, Warren Christopher.

The 2016 O’Melveny Scholars were selected through an extensive application process that included a review of the students’ financial need, GPA and attendance records, enrollment in college preparatory classes, and community involvement. Each school then nominated the top applicants to submit essays and recommendations to an O’Melveny committee of attorneys and staff, who interviewed the applicants and selected the scholars.

In addition to the monetary support the scholarships provide, the scholars are offered college readiness workshops

and mentoring from O’Melveny employees, who volunteer to provide support and guidance throughout the college admission process and beyond.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for these scholarship winners, and I thank O’Melveny for making a real difference in these students’ lives and the Fund for Public Schools for their support of this program. When we build

Percy Sutton’s CCNY SEEK Program Celebrates 50 Years

ifty years later, City College of New York’s pioneering Percy Ellis Sutton SEEK Program continues to be a pathway to success for many students that would otherwise have found a college education daunting. The acronym for “Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge,” SEEK began as a pre-baccalaureate program at City College in 1965. In 1966, the New York State Assembly passed legislation creating SEEK and the program was expanded to other CUNY senior colleges.

Michelle Lian - Harlem Teacher Presented with Excellence Award

E

ver since Michelle Lian was a child, she wanted to be an educator — and follow in the footsteps of a relative famous for his contributions to the field of urban education. “My great uncle, Angelo Patri, started urban education reform in the Bronx in the 1940s. He now has a school named after him and books written about him. Much of the work I do today is inspired by his efforts nearly 70

years ago,” says Lian.

Today, Lian’s work toward closing the achievement gap would certainly make him proud. Lian is a kindergarten and second grade teacher at Success Academy Harlem 2, where 97% of children are black or Hispanic, and 80% receive free or reduced price lunch. She was recently honored as a winner of Success Academy’s 2016 Excellence Awards for her skill as an educator. Lian

was one of 85 educators to receive an award, and she was selected from among 1,400 faculty members across the organization’s 34 schools.

Lian helps children make dramatic academic gains and avoid the skill deficits that hold back children in underserved neighborhoods. Since her graduation from Loyola University in 2010, she has focused on educating SA Harlem 2’s special needs

children, which make up 17% of all students at the school. “I feel so honored and lucky to be inspiring young minds each day,” says Lian. As a second grade lead teacher, she helps her colleagues sharpen their craft on a daily basis. “Michelle goes out of her way to make sure everyone has what they need,” says the school’s principal, Kaitlin McDermott.

Alkaline Water

e all know that water is very important for our health, but the type of water can be deadly.

There are many types of drinking water options available but it is important to understand some drinking water can be more helpful to your overall self-health strategies then others.

I believe the best water to drink to maximize your health is ionized alkaline water. On a pH scale from 3.0 to 10, ionized alkaline water is between 9.0 and 10. Most

commercial bottled water is in the 5.0pH range; New York tap water is around 7.0. The higher the pH value in your drinking water the better it is for your health.

New York City has some of the best tap water in the country but the many chemicals used to make it safe have taken away much of its natural health value. Many of the chemicals used in our water system have been found to be harmful and toxic; chlorine is one of those controversial chemicals. There is a strong movement currently trying to get New

York to reduce or eliminate the use of chlorine in the treatment of the city’s tap water due to research showing harmful health reactions to chlorine-treated water.

Ionized water machines will filter out chemicals and toxins in regular tap water, transforming normal tap water into healthy ionized alkaline water with a point 9.0 or better pH value.

The best machines will produce the highest pH value of 10 in the ionized alkaline water that they transform from tap water.

The reason why the high pH value is so important

in preserving health is its ability to reduce the acidity in the body. Excess acids in the body will attack and destroy healthy body tissue. The body protects itself from this by creating fat cells.

Alkaline water can neutralize the acidity of the body and the high pH value in alkaline water will reduce the body’s need to produce fat and cholesterol to protect itself from harmful acids.

Most people who drink and cook with ionized alkaline water will experience weight loss, another benefit. When detoxing the use of alkaline water

ast week I urged you to shop responsibly if you felt the overwhelming need to hit every sale in town. This week, if you still feel the urge to shop, there are a few more things to consider before pulling out your wallet. So, drum roll please . . . . The list of guidelines continues, numbers four to ten: • Yes, a sale is a sale, and bargains are bargains, but remember that there is always something on sale somewhere at all times.

Don’t just run out and buy just because there’s a sale,

unless you need a specific item.

• Don’t go shopping if you have bags of clothing, accessories, shoes — anything that you haven’t worn or still has the tags attached.

• If you have to hide your purchases once you get home, return it to the store (if you can’t shop honestly what’s the point . . .).

• If you purchase something, check the store’s return policy, because you may need to follow the guideline above.

Before you even consider shopping, remember that you probably have more than you need, and perhaps by using a little

creativity and accessories you can work magic with what you already own.

•Remember, the clothes that you wear (or don’t), can’t collect interest nor increase in value (okay, unless we’re talking Chanel originals-and I mean sewn by Coco herself).

• Money is a powerful tool. Use it wisely to empower yourself. Used unwisely, the debt you incur will enslave you.

Face it, you can shop until you drop but buying something new won’t necessarily help you look or feel better-that comes from the inside. If you have money to spend and you sincerely want to shop for something or if you saved up to shop that’s

one thing; but shopping for the sake of shopping can become a problem.

There is plenty of time this year to invest the money you’ll save in something that will result in rewarding you with a spiritual, emotional or financial return. Before you shop, stop and think about it. See you next week.

I

n every love life, there’s always “The One That Got Away.”

He got away because you were both too young, too scared, too broke, or too different.

Things were said that couldn’t be unsaid, done that shouldn’t have been done. It just didn’t work out then, but now…? In the new novel, “I Almost Forgot about You” by Terry McMillan, he’ll never get away twice.

It should have been an ordinary run-of-the-mill Monday.

That’s the way it started for optometrist Georgia Young: new prescriptions, return clients, follow-ups, and one new Monday-morning patient who – big

surprise! - turned out to be the daughter of a man Georgia dated in college and had fallen for.

She never told the guy she loved him, though, and she never would… because he was dead.

Shaken to the core, Georgia began to think about all the men she’d slept with, and the ones she’d fallen in love with.

How would life have changed if she’d stayed with any one of them? She’d been divorced twice; would that number have been higher or lower? Would she have more than her two daughters, live somewhere other than San Francisco, travel, cook for two?

At nearly 55 years old, she figured she’d never find love

again, but she at least needed closure. With the urging of her BFF, Wanda, Georgia made a list of the men she’d once loved, and she promised herself she’d find them - not because she wanted to rekindle anything, but because she had so many questions for them and for herself.

Finding her ex-husbands was easy. Michael happened to be moving back to California, and Niles was out of jail for his white-collar crime; both were happy and had moved on with their lives. Georgia was even able to stop hating them.

But Abraham wouldn’t be easy to find. Neither would Lance. There were two Jameses, two Harolds, Thomas, Horace,

by Terry McMillan and others, and one white guy that Wanda remembered, and added to the list. Georgia knew she’d never find them all, especially since she had a business, a busy family, and a life to live.

Still, they were all men she’d remember forever. But would they remember her?

Show of hands: who hasn’t spent girlfriend-time talking about boyfriends? Probably nobody, so “I Almost Forgot about You” is a comfortably familiar story.

That’s not to say that it’s same-old, though. Like she did in many of her other novels, author Terry McMillan gives readers a cast of strong-minded, smart women who lean on other strong-minded, smart women.

In this book, however, we see a few more bruises from living,

rather than from relationships: Georgia and her friends are looking toward retirement, a little less stress, and no more drama. Even so, they get drama anyhow, and you’ll be glad for it.

Definitely, this is a novel for anyone who’s lost a love and wondered, “What if…?”

It’s a book you’ll want to share with your BFFs. “I Almost Forgot about You” is a book you

shouldn’t let get away.

Three the Hard Way! Black Superheroes on the Big Screen

icance of the Black Panther, one has to keep in mind what African images tended to be in Western fiction of 50 years ago. The best known character based in Africa at that time was Tarzan, who regularly battled black “savages.” The images of Africans were usually those of poor, ignorant people who lived in huts and threw spears.

Marvel Comics flipped all those stereotypes. In their universe, the African country of Wakanda was so wealthy and advanced, it had to hide itself from the rest of the unready world. Yes, some of their residents lived in huts and carried spears, but their huts were made from indestruc-

tible metal and the spears could shoot lasers. Wakanda’s king, the Black Panther, was a formidable force on every conceivable level: a brilliant inventor, hunter, and tactician who lacked super powers yet could backslap most powered characters with ease. The Black Panther symbolizes sophistication and coolness while Wakanda represents Africa’s potential if it had never been conquered or unduly influenced by outside forces.

Ta-nehisi Coates is currently writing the “Black Panther” monthly comic, but Coates and Boseman aren’t the only notables connected to the character.

In Captain America: Civil War, Anthony Mackie plays Falcon for the fourth time. The Falcon debuted on the silver screen in 2014 (in Captain America: The Winter Solider), but has existed in comics since 1969.

teenagers. But while the comic and the characters have adapted somewhat, the gist still remains the same; i.e., for 75 years Cap has always had the sensibilities of an idealistic man from the forties and for 47 years the Falcon is always more knowledgeable about modern times.

In comics published during the turbulent late sixties and early seventies, the Falcon enlightened Captain America about race relations and “life in the ghetto.” In 2016, he’s teases Cap about not knowing about Social Media. Both men are gifted athletes and world-class fighters.

In the comics, the Falcon is also connected to the Black Panther because the Panther created the wing mechanism that allows the Falcon to fly.

What you may not know is the movie debuted one black super hero on screen and featured three black heroes that have existed for decades.

Chadwick Boseman is specializing in playing black “firsts.” In 42, he starred as Jackie Robinson, the first black player in Major League Baseball. In Captain America: Civil War, he plays the Black Panther, comics’ first black superhero.

Introduced in 1966, the Black Panther was created by the legendary comic team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the pages of the “Fantastic Four” #52.

With each celebration comes the request that we women bake our most special treats to share --pineapple coconut, sweet potato, chocolate, red velvet, green forest cake, you name it. I admit, my mouth began to water until

I thought about an article I began two weeks ago on the subject of food dyes present in many foods on the market and share some natural alternatives that can be used specifically in baking, plus highlight some companies that have reduced or eliminated food dye based on consumer demand.

Despite claims by the FDA of no links between food dyes and behavior disorders like hyperactivity and ADD; advocacy organizations like Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) have published research that states otherwise and food companies appear to be listening: As of 2016, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese will use paprika, annatto and turmeric for colors instead of

yellow #5 and #6 linked to “several cancer-causing chemicals” and “hyperactivity and behavioral problems” according to a recent 56-page report, Seeing Red

by CSPI. Nestle Foods will remove artificial flavors and colors like Red #40 and Yellow #5 from all of its chocolate candy products.

Mars Inc, makers of dozens of candy products including Skittles and M&M’s, plans to do the same over the next five years.

By 2017, the sandwich chain Subway will begin using banana peppers colored with turmeric instead of Yellow No. #5 and turkey preserved with vinegar rather than propionic acid.

Dozens of online sources provide detailed information on how to bake your favorite dessert treats using the colors found in Mother Nature and not from a chemical lab.

Care2.com has excellent articles along with links providing step-by-step directions on using the juice and pulp of vegetables, fruits and even spices like saffron and turmeric (a substitute for Yellow #5 and #6) to color your culinary creations. For instance, beet juice for red velvet cake – boiled, juiced or straight from the can is your best bet. Spinach juice, Macha powder (green tea powder) or a few drops of liquid chlorophyll will work wonders for green forest cake or yummy kale cupcakes with coconut icing. Purple and blues are made with the liquid from boiled red

dversity naturally sounds like a bad thing, but an opportunity to overcome a difficult situation can actually be a valuable gift, say experts.

“Times of adversity are simply stepping-stones to live a better life,” says Coach Michael Taylor, author of the new book, “Adversity is Your Greatest Ally.” “They’re neither good nor bad until you choose to label them.”

Born in the projects, a victim of child abuse and a high school dropout, Taylor was well-acquainted with hardship in childhood, and has been no stranger to it in adult-

The Bronx Puerto Rican Parade 2016

T

he Bronx Puerto Rican Parade marched on Sunday June 5 from Poe Park by 192nd St and Grand Concourse, up the Grand Concourse to Van Cortlandt Ave East. Parade President Ruben Rios and Chairman Francisco Gonzalez led this year’s parade committee with help from the Market Advertising Solutions (MAS) organization, facebook.com/MASMarketingNY/. The parade theme was “Tainos and the Indians of the Americas.”

The Tainos were the original inhabitants of Puerto Rico and they called “Borinquen.”

At a kick off event on Friday morning, June 3 at Jimmy’s Grand Café, the Queen, Princesses and Princes introduced themselves to the audience. Elizabeth Ruiz Delgado was very excited to be selected Queen of the women’s division. She won this title after

100-year Old Co Op City Resident received Proclamation to secure a good life for their two girls and two sons. Christiana Francis, a longtime resident of Co-op City, and her brother Elias Auguste, who lives in St. Lucia, continue to embody those successful efforts today.

Ms. Francis was educated in St. Lucia and became a professional dressmaker. In 1981, she retired to come to the U.S. and live with her daughters Sylvia Anthony and Lucille Francis in the Bronx.

Ms. Francis is a cherished member of Sharon Seventh Day Adventist

Church, where she has volunteered to assist in community service work.

She is such a widely admired member that she is fondly known as Mother Francis or Sister Francis; and Now at the blessed age of 100, Ms. Francis is to be commended for distinguishing herself not only for the length of her incredible life but for the impact she has had in so many lives. Queens BP KATZ SECURES FULL FUNDING FOR SOUTH HOLLIS LIBRARY CAPITAL UPGRADES

South Hollis Community Library is a neighborhood anchor, providing much-needed resources for the community, including vital after-school programs for children and teens. Active construction is estimated to begin in 2019, with an estimated completion date in 2022.

UEENS, NY – Borough President Katz and Queens Library President and CEO Dennis Walcott, joined by elected officials, community leaders and Friends of the South Hollis Library, today announced capital investments for planned renovations and significant upgrades at the South Hollis Community Library. The renovation will include new children’s, teens and adult areas, more computers for customers to use, a new program room, new self-service check out and check-in, a completely new décor and more space for customers.

“These are substantial investments for the long-awaited renovations at the local library, and for the children, seniors and families of South Hollis,” said Borough President KATZ. “The public funds will allow for capital upgrades that will transform the interior into a state-of-the-art community hub of learning, literacy and culture.”

The $8.25 million capital renovations will be made possible with the $3 million allocation
