Building a Financial Emergency Kit for Your Family

By Nathaniel Sillin hat would a sudden financial emergency be in your life? It could be a storm causing massive property damage to your home.

It could also be something more personal, like an accident that would cut off your ability to make a living.

Whatever it is, if someone else had to step in to help you in an emergency situation, it’s important to have a plan in place so they know what to do.

A financial emergency kit is a crucial component in financial planning. In short, a financial emergen-

cy kit involves identifying and planning for potential financial emergencies that could affect you and your loved ones. Building a successful one goes beyond sorting paperwork – it involves looking at a variety of potential situations in your life and then asking, “What’s the worst that could happen?”

You will want to create a kit – a set of physical or digital documents and instructions – that can help you or someone else you trust manage in a crisis. Here are some items you’ll likely want to include: 1. Estate documents. Estate planning is really the high-

est form of financial emergency planning, because it addresses the ultimate personal financial emergencies – medical incapacitation or death. Would your family have easy access to this material if something happened to you? In your family financial emergency kit, estate documents would include copies of current wills (for you and your spouse or partner), your advanced directives (which instruct doctors on end-of-life or other stages in medical care), health/financial powers of attorney (which designate specific individuals to step in to manage your money

or healthcare if you cannot do so) as well as other documents that provide additional guidance for operating businesses and managing and distributing other assets you have.

Make sure these documents are always current and that contact information is included for all the qualified experts you used to prepare them – estate or business attorneys, tax professionals and financial planners.

2. Insurance policies. Being able to find home and auto policies in a natural disaster is a no-brainer, but it’s important to think a little more broadly. File as much policy and contact detail as you can for any health, disability, business, life and accident coverage you have – and remember that it’s particularly important to note or file documentation on this coverage at work, too.

Sometimes we sign up rather blindly for workbased benefits only to realize how important they may be in a financial emergency.

3. Tax materials. If a family member dies or becomes incapacitated, tax matters still need to be attended to.

If you work with a tax professional, make sure their contact information is in the digital or physical kit (see indexes, contacts and guides, below), but it’s also important to keep past returns and relevant

supporting data based on your individual tax situation.

4. Investment, savings and retirement documents. If you work with a qualified financial planner or tax expert, you may have access to a particular system that lists and track this information in an organized way that many of us don’t have at home. However you plan and track your investments, it should be included in your kit.

5. Indexes, contact sheets and guides.

Some people need a little guidance, others need a lot. A family financial emergency kit needs to be usable by all designated family members. Put yourself in the role of a friend or family member who’s been called in to help you in a crisis. If you had to step in to settle an estate, healthcare or disaster emergency for a friend or family member and they weren’t around to advise you, what information would you need to get started? In any category of information you include in a financial emergency kit, include a separate file or digital instruction that details people to call, account numbers if necessary, relevant online and physical addresses and other key data to advise that person about what’s in front of them and what they should do. If you work with qualified financial ex-

perts, make sure their contact information is included.

6. Easy access to essentials under lock and key. If you’re away from home when damage occurs or if family members need to access vehicles or other spaces, make sure you have keys and access codes locked safely in your emergency kit. You will also want to ensure that your emergency contacts have the necessary access to your emergency kit in order to retrieve these materials. You or loved ones might also need access to funds, particularly cash in an emergency. If you don’t have a bank account established strictly for emergencies that allows specific family members to write checks or make cash withdrawals, you should consider it.

Bottom line: Building a financial emergency kit requires some thinking, but it can help you avoid major losses and speed up decision making in a crisis.

Work with people you trust to make it accessible and useful to your family and trusted individuals.

PA and PTA Elections are Underway By: NYC Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña

arents are our partners in lifting up each school community and ensuring students receive a high quality education. A parent’s involvement can come in many different ways – through participation on a committee, leading school tours, volunteering to support an after school program or helping to recruit fellow parents to best support their students. This spring, schools across the City are preparing for Parent Association (PA) or Parent Teacher Association (PTA) elections and I urge families to consider running for a seat for the PA or PTA elections.

At weekly CEC meetings, town halls, school visits or even the grocery store, I talk to parents and grandparents and we always agree: we want the best education for each child and all children in the community. While we’ve seen a tremendous spike in parent involvement—in the first four months this year, 38% more families attended parent-teacher conferences than in the year prior, school based workshops increased by

60% and parent attendance at workshops went up 59% compared to last year—we want even more families involved. Public school parents are an integral piece of the puzzle and family input, advocacy and support will help students succeed.

Here are the facts: every parent or guardian of a student is automatically a member of their school’s PA or PTA. Each year, parents vote to select their Executive Board: President, Recording Secretary and Treasurer. Schools have until the last day of classes to hold elections but are strongly encouraged to do so before June 15. Election results are announced immediately

after and members take office on July 1st.

When I was in school, my mother who knew very little English, was reticent to come to school and seek guidance from teachers. Parents: regardless of the language you speak at home, you play a central role in your child’s education.

Every parent has something to contribute to their school community.

As a principal I depended on my PTA for multiple things. We met monthly to develop school initiatives, create partnerships with community organizations, receive input on how to strengthen teacher and parent relationships, and organize activities.

Under the leadership of Yolanda Torres, the Division of Family and Community Engagement offers a series of leadership trainings for parents to become leaders in their communities. Since Yolanda has been leading this critical work, we’ve seen expansions in ESL workshops for families and parent leadership seminars and launched our first Grandparents ad-

visory group. We’ve even expanded cooking classes and Zumba classes, since we heard from families that this is what you wanted. Yolanda shares my vision and is determined to reach every parent in every neighborhood of our great city.

Having a strong parental presence in schools helps to create welcoming school environments and is an integral part of supporting students on their academic journey.

This support and partnership between families and school staff will lead to improved student outcomes. Jones was a shy girl growing up, but it was onstage where she captured attention. “I always loved to dance. As a child I remember being on stage and hearing people clap. I loved

that feeling and when I performed, I knew that’s what I wanted to do,” added Jones.

Jennifer studied dance from age six through undergraduate education as a dance major at County College of Morristown, in New Jersey. Upon graduating she trained at the Broadway Dance Center, and it was there where she heard The Rockettes were holding auditions.

Jones was the only Black woman chosen out of 221 wom-

en who auditioned for the rare opening on the line. “When I auditioned, I felt like all eyes were on me,” said Jones. “The news was so historic, that Jones found out she made the team while watching an 11 o’clock news broadcast that ran the headline, “Radio City Music Hall just casted its first African-American Rockette.”

uper Bowl XXII of 1988 was a groundbreaking event between the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos.

However, it was not the game that made it so historical, but the Something Grand halftime show performance where Dancer Jennifer Jones made her debut as the first African-American Radio City Music Hall Rockette. Following her groundbreaking performance, Jones traveled the country dancing professionally for over 18 years. In 2001, she joined the cast of the Tony Award-winning Broadway show, 42nd Street, and continued to perform until she retired in 2005.

Jones will be honored at Harlem School of the Arts’ (HSA) Harlem City Music Hall Dance Spectacular, which was

Community Works Shining a Spotlight on Black Shakespeare

ore than 200 community participants filled MIST Harlem on Monday, May 23, 2016, for a unique look at the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s legacy through performance and art by actors and artists who showed how pursuit of theater has driven their professional lives and provided a legacy for Harlem.

It was the first of a series of three free public programs planned in the next month by Community Works in association with MIST Harlem and the Harlem Arts Alliance at MIST Harlem highlighting various artistic contributions to Harlem’s rich cultural menu over decades.

Each features discussion or performance by cultural historians or art-makers who continue to develop the legacy of the arts to show that “Harlem is . . . A State of Mind.”

On Monday, a group of fine artists created instant visual interpretations inspired by the words and performances of three classical actors/ teachers who told the story of Black Shakespeareans in New York from the 1800s to present day. The program, entitled “A Touch of Sable,” featured theater performances by actors/ teachers Dathan B. Williams, Debra Ann Byrd and Tauriq Jenkins of Take Wing and Soar Productions.

What made it unique, 10

of course, was the unusual combination of reflecting the experience of black actors approaching Shakespeare in both Black theater and theater companies of mixed race, coordinated with the personal stories of those actors involved. Their stories reflected determination, humor, luck and tenacity to pursue careers in the theater that require talent, flexibility and self-direction.

A group of visual artists then used those themes to create original art works while audience members looked on. The artists included Andrea Arroyo, Genevieve Andre, JaSon Auguste, Aleathia Brown, Paul Deo and Shuri Jackson.

The audience also was able to enjoy the “Harlem is. . . A State of Mind” art exhibition at MIST Harlem, which features original artwork by 14 emerging and master artists. That exhibition will continue through June 30.

The programs are being offered free of charge by Community Works, a nonprofit that works to bridge differences among neighborhoods using the arts, with support from the Harlem Community Development Corporation (HCDC). The programs are linked to a larger effort to show off Harlem’s cultural history citywide, including a recently concluded “Harlem is . . . Downtown”

Langston Hughes Festival attracts 250 Harlem children

35-year tradition continued at The City College of New York on Thursday, May 26, when 250 mostly local Harlem students, grades K through six, participated in the 2016 Langston Hughes Choral Speaking Festival.

The event ran from 10am to noon at the Aaron Davis Hall, Theater ‘A.’ The young participants performed imaginative renditions of Hughes’ poetry and fiction. Performances ranged from choral reading and dramatization to interpretive dance, musical tributes and original poetry or prose.

The festival was founded by the late Raymond R. Patterson (1929-2001), pro-

fessor emeritus of English at City College and is supported by CCNY’s Division of the Humanities and the Arts.

Three Avoidable Errors That Could Upend Your Retirement Plans

s older Americans approach retirement, many may be realizing their financial planning isn’t what it should have been.

That could mean they need to postpone retirement – or abandon the idea altogether.

“Most people don’t spend much time even thinking about retirement,” says Stephen Ng, author of “10 Financial Mistakes You Should Avoid: Strategies Designed to Help Keep Your Money Safe and Growing” (www.stephenngfg. com).

“They see it as a far-off time when they will have magically accumulated the money they need to jet around the world, pay for

their grandchildren’s education, or otherwise have fun.”

That leaves them unprepared for the reality, Ng says. They may need to work part-time just to get by. It’s possible they will outlive their money.

“There’s no reason to work hard your whole life, but end up without the money you could have had because you failed to avoid common mistakes people make,” Ng says.

He says three examples of avoidable errors are: • Failing to understand taxation. Most money is taxable right away, but in some cases, such as with individual retirement accounts, taxes can be deferred. A third category,

Ng says, is tax-free money. Examples of tax-free investments include municipal bonds, life insurance proceeds and 529 education savings plans.

“Your goal should be to shift as much taxable money as possible into the tax-deferred or taxfree categories,” he says.

• Acting without enough specialized advice. You might assume one financial advisor could handle all your investment needs.

But that’s not necessarily the case, Ng says. The strongest plans usually benefit from multiple specialists. An eldercare attorney could be helpful for those 60 or older. A certified public accountant could assist you with tax-avoidance strategies.

Nearly a third of millennials (ages 18 to 34) hope to purchase a home within the next year, but more than 40 percent may not have the credit to do so, according to a survey from TransUnion, a leading credit bureau.

Mortgage lenders will look at your credit score and report when you apply for a mortgage, so make sure your information is up to date. It’s best to check your report three months before you start looking at new homes to make sure your score is in a healthy range.

• Start planning early: Your credit score is built over a lifetime of spending. Keep an eye on your score and track how your spending habits affect it.

• Build credit: Consumers with low or no credit should take steps

to build a healthy credit score. How? Paying bills on time, making sure you’re keeping a low credit utilization ratio (the amount of credit you’re using out of your available credit), and even asking your landlord to report rent payments to a credit bureau such as TransUnion are all ways you can build credit.

• Shop around: Research mortgages and interest rates to receive a competitive offer. Your credit score is of the utmost importance since lenders will check your score and report to make sure you will be able to responsible pay back the mortgage loan.

Cuomo Announced Aggressive Public Awareness Campaign to Educate New Yorkers on the Dangers of the Zika Virus

G

overnor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the launch of an aggressive public awareness campaign to educate New Yorkers on the dangers of the Zika Virus. The campaign’s launch marks the latest step forward in implementing the Governor’s comprehensive sixstep action plan to combat Zika. Already, more than 7,000 larvicide tablets have been distributed to eliminate Aedes mosquitoes potentially carrying the virus. Additionally, New York City and the 57 other counties in New York have all received approval from the state Department of Health on

local Zika action plans.

“New York State has put forward the nation’s most robust action plan to combat Zika and eliminate this deadly disease at its source,” Governor Cuomo said. “This public awareness campaign will ensure New Yorkers understand the threat Zika poses and how we can stop its transmission. By providing New Yorkers with the information they need, we can protect the public health and put an end to Zika once and for all.”

New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said, “The Department of Health is focused on

reducing the risk of Zika virus transmission in New York State. Governor Cuomo’s six-point action plan provides local governments with the support and guidance necessary to address Zika and minimize its impact; and the public awareness campaign provides the information residents need to avoid the risk of Zika transmission.”

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus transmitted primarily by the Aedes aegypti mosquito in South and Central America. The virus can also be sexually transmitted. Although Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are not present in New York, a related species

named Aedes albopictus is active in the downstate region. Scientists have not yet determined if Aedes albopictus – the type in New York – transmits Zika. There are 70 different species of mosquito in New York State and Aedes albopictus make up just three to five percent of the total population. Mosquito season in New York runs from April through September.

The greatest danger facing those who contract Zika is a birth defect known as microcephaly.

This disease occurs in babies of mothers who are infected with the Zika Virus while pregnant. Zika may also cause a rare dis-

order called Guillain Barré Syndrome, which can cause temporary paralysis. The World Health Organization declared Zika a public health emergency of international concern in February.

The state will distribute free Zika protection kits to pregnant women in the target region.

The Zika protection kits contain educational materials, insect repellent, condoms and larvicide tablets to treat standing water. A total 20,000 kits will initially be distributed to healthcare providers throughout the region. A photo of a Zika protection kit is available here.

The Controlling of Self

he controlling of self is not as difficult as some might think once you learn to move yourself out of the way. That voice in your head telling you that you can’t do something is you.

I often write about how thought manifestation can create your reality. When you allow yourself or your subconscious mind to believe that you can’t accomplish a goal, your subconscious mind will obey your thought like a genie and create mental and physical obstacles to manifest your self-fulfill-

ing prophecy.

Learning to control one’s self is learning to control that voice in your head which at times only seeks short term pleasure.

“I don’t want to get out of bed”, “I don’t feel like going to work” are shortterm pleasure-seeking thoughts that can sometimes get the best of us if we don’t focus on the long-term consequences of those short-term pleasure-seeking thoughts.

It is important to focus on your ability to control your thoughts which are often connected to your emotions.

I was once told that our

emotions are like strong, fast horses pulling a chariot (which is your body), you (or your will) are the driver of the chariot. If the horses run out of control the body will follow. Only you the driver can keep the horse on the path that you want to follow. I am sure many of you have found your chariot off the path in the bushes wondering how you got there.

You were not in control of your horses.

We all have the ability to control our emotions. Many of us are just not aware that we have that power. We use our thought manifestation

abilities in non-productive ways when we are not aware of our abilities.

What you think strongly about can manifest into your reality. If you have negative thoughts about yourself and your abilities those thoughts will manifest. Fear and doubt are the main obstacles that prevent us from understanding our true self and abilities.

Self-control is very difficult without the understanding of self. We can do or be what we believe that we can do or be. We must learn to have faith in our abilities. Visualize a long term goal, keep that

vision in your mind when your short term thoughts take you off course. Your long term vision will help you get back on the path of your goal. Your internal genie will only do what you will it to do. Be careful about your thoughts.

Always keep the eye on the prize. It will seem difficult at times to stay on the path but your ability to manifest your thoughts into reality will provide you with a way to achieve your goal. Use your gifts productively and control the voices in your head.

The only thing that can stop you from realizing your vision is you.

ately, everywhere you look there are signs calling to you– Sale! Sale! Sale! The urge to shop, for some of us, is pretty powerful. It’s hard to resist an opportunity to save by purchasing something-anything that you “just gotta have,” that you really only created an impulse need for–simply because it’s on sale.

I’m not pointing fingers; I’m guilty of loving a good sale too. BUT, I have to face a few cold facts, so go with me for a minute . . . Often what looked fabulous in the fitting room, didn’t look so

great after getting home to my own mirror. What I finally realized was that I was shopping for all the wrong reasons. Instead of shopping I really needed to address what was really bothering me, because shopping didn’t help me feel better.

So, as I see it, maybe that impulse is a great time to reflect on changes I need to make in my life. And since it makes sense to work on the worst habits first–I chose shopping.

All of you kindred spirits out there; please keep reading. Don’t get me wrong.

I’m not going to advocate that one should never shop again, because like I said, I love sales. But what I will say is that if you are going to shop, shop responsibly.

So, here a few guidelines

for you to implement before you start charging down the aisles to shop. Before you go consider doing the following three things: Go through your closet (as well as your other family members), and contribute undamaged or slightly worn clothing, shoes, handbags and other accessories to a local organization or shelter that works with the less fortunate to empower themselves.

Having “good” clothes can really be a great new start for someone. As you go through, be honest with yourself, if you haven’t worn it in a year or it’s too small–it’s out!

Before you go shopping, ask yourself if you really, really need to shop.

Your time and energy might be better spent improving yourself in other ways or

spending time with family and friends.

Ask yourself why you want to shop. Are you lonely? Down in the dumps?

Have your ex’s credit card number? If you’ve got it like that financially, and have a need to spend, then you might consider putting some of your disposable income to better use– like putting something away for your child’s college education, starting an annuity, saving for a down payment on a home, adding to your retirement fund, taking a class to grow professionally or giving to charity . . .

If after asking yourself these three questions, and you still feel the need to shop—Wait until next week’s column. I have a few more things for you

I

remember a while back I heard Bishop T.D. Jakes of the Potters House preach a sermon that still resonates with me to this day. The gist of it was that a good portion of the Bible was written from a jail cell.

I’m pretty sure his overall message had something to do with the church’s outreach ministry, which I understand to be significant. What struck me then and remains with me now is the reality of God’s Word and direction coming from the steadfast faith of those imprisoned. What is it about being a believer, a walking, talking believer that somehow frightens those in power so much, that a jail cell is an

inevitable and practical answer?

History suggests that professing one’s belief in Jesus Christ as Lord can literally be a death sentence. The Bible teaches us that eventually our belief will be put to the test. The thing is have you ever wondered why God’s teachings are so feared by those who believe in other religions, or no religion at all?

At one time I used to say Jesus’ message made so much sense that even if He didn’t exist, we should invent Him. Now that I’m saved, I guess you could say I’m a candidate for institutional oppression. If you’re a believer, there are things in this world that want you dead. The odd thing about what Bishop Jakes said was and is that I

don’t view myself as a threat to anyone based on my belief in one God, the Holy Trinity and the truth of Jesus Christ. But the world in which I live does.

I suppose a larger issue might be have I done anything or said anything that should land me in jail; if jail is defined as that spiritual place that present day Sadducees and Pharisees want to send people like you and me? If I haven’t said or done anything, then maybe I better get going, stir some things up. In their day, the apostles, Paul and others were indeed looked upon as threats to the so-called establishment. That meant governments and principalities, as well as the church hierarchy of that day.

anyone would argue that on His worst day, Jesus was the quintessential revolutionary. It still amazes me how such principles of unconditional universal love for humankind got him killed. And then it always hits me that this philosophy will ultimately attack and undermine entrenched institutional power of all kinds especially that contained within the church. That’s when I realize that if you are a believer in Christ, you are most certainly a threat to man. Man craves power and Christianity abdicates all power to Jehovah.

We stand as representatives of that truth and stand trial everyday with the world as our judge and jury, or so it sometimes appears. That explains that tar-

get on the backs of believers throughout history and should remind us all that there is indeed a target on all of our backs. It’s a light, a very bright light illuminating the darkness that surrounds many a non-believer.

All I can encourage you to do in the face of all this is to stay the course and know our defense attorney has already argued this case. The prosecuting attorney has already lost. So when you’re alone in your cell, remember this battle you’re in is over. The verdict is in. We win. Be humble in your victory.

But numbers-crunching isn’t the only thing that is revolutionizing the game.

Glockner says that “cutting-edge professional sports diagnostics” can determine which exercises and motions can enhance physical performance with-

out causing injury. He says that “sophisticated scales” now measure “force and explosiveness.” Team doctors use technology to promote muscle balance and flexibility and they can predict specifically where on the body an injury might take place.

And yet – it still all boils down to the human factor: coaches and general managers are needed to sort through the information and determine what’s important. And even if they do pick the right information, players are still fallibly human.

52 CAN DO’S: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions for each week of the year Ahhh, summertime! It’s finally here. What better way to start the season than with a Healthy Lifestyle Makeover (“HLM”)?

I believe a healthy lifestyle is a journey where fitness and nutrition are harmoniously woven into one’s daily routine to produce a state of wellness. Begin by choosing a specific theme that holds deep and personal meaning for you, then build your daily activities around it as an anchor

to stay on track!

For me, the month of June actually holds three themes – ironically all of which connect in a special way in relationship to health and wellness.

Black music month!

“Food fight” is an empowering rap video by the group Earth Amplified featuring the rap artist Stic of Dead Prez that tells the story of a kid who lives in a world where the food at the local corner store is killing his neighborhood - literally.

(Check it out on You Tube it’s amazing!)

One of the biggest hardships gripping our community is the health crisis –and much of it we have the power to prevent with healthier habits. Beginning this month, make a com-

mitment to dance your way into health by exercising at least once a day to one of your favorite inspirational songs until you sweat –even if you have to dance in your chair! The average song is about four minutes. That’s seven songs in seven days, four minutes a day. You’ll not only transform your body, but your mind and spirit with the power of music!

Happy Father’s Day! Most special for me is that June represents a celebration of fathers. As the proverbial “Daddy’s girl”, I give thanks to my Dad (who went to be with the Lord two years ago) for helping create in me a sense of awareness at a very young age that my health was in my hands. I always tell the

story of my Mom’s famous “chunky spaghetti” expertly packed with so many succulent peppers, mushrooms, beans, onions and tomatoes–we never missed the meat! But I could always tell when my Dad (raised as a Seventh Day Adventist) was under the weather because he would chomp on crushed garlic with his eggs in the morning. Daddy said “garlic is a medicinal food that fights inflammation!”

Summer Solstice!

Here in the Northern Hemisphere summer officially starts on June 21, which is called the summer solstice. Not only is there more daylight between sunrise and sunset than at any other time during the year, but it also means harvesting of summer vegetables such as leafy greens, tomatoes, melon and midsummer planting for harvest in the Fall. Eat in accordance with the seasons. Trust that your taste buds know the

Lu offers the example of a woman craving sugar or salt during her menstrual cycle.

“Assuming she listens to the wisdom of her body and satisfies her craving, she’ll have some chocolate or eat some potato chips. This woman is doing something natural.”

• You may have heard of the adage, “you are what you eat.” Lu says to also consider the phrase, “you are what you think,” and avoid a steady diet of negative emotions, which you then must digest and process. Your thoughts impact your body and health, he

says.

• The next time your stomach is upset, consider reaching for something natural. Ginger can be eaten or used topically to deal with stomach discomfort, reduce inflammation and even lower pain from arthritis.

Girlfriends Breakfast of Empowerment Unites Women and Teens in the Queens Community

riends of friends invited their friends to attend the 4th Annual Girlfriends Breakfast of Empowerment hosted by Girlfriends Pathways to Empowerment (GP2E), this past Saturday at Occasions Banquet & Catering Hall.

The motto of GP2E is “Girlfriends come together to empower one another young and old. Girlfriends help uplift and support one another to achieve their dreams and aspirations.

We laugh, we cry, we pray and we persevere. We find the best in one another. We watch our dreams come true by supporting each other. We Are Girlfriends of Empowerment!”

In 2012, CEO and Founder Regina Lashley had the first breakfast for girlfriends and GP2E was then established in February 2014. GP2E is a Sisterhood whose focus is to empower “Girlfriends are women and teens coming together from all walks of life,” states Regina Lashley, “We use our resources to help each other make better choices and transform our lives.

In addition to our NY chapter, we have two other chapters in Charlotte, North Carolina and Pensacola, Florida.
