In celebration of Father’s Day, the Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic held their annual bike race around Marcus Garvey Park this past Sunday on Father’s Day.. It was a family event as the bikers were as young as 6 years old.

There were also races of professionals from around the world as the grand finale. It was a great way to spend Father’s Day for the entire family. (see page 13) The Apollo Theater held their annual fundraiser Spring Fling last week. Earlier in the day Prince was inducted into the Apollo Walk of Fame. Tribute to Prince continued as parts of the movie featuring Prince, “Purple Rain” was played along with his music during the reception. (see page 10)

DISCOVER THE UNEXPECTED: CONTINUING THE LEGACY OF FREEDOM’S JOURNAL IN 2016

istory is more than the memory and documentation of the past. We all learn from the trials, tribulations and triumphs of prior generations. History sets the stage for the transformation of the present into the future. Such is the case today for more than 45 million African Americans and millions of others across the United States.

This year is another national election year. The value and purpose of the right and responsibility to vote is more important today than in 1965 when the Voting Rights Act was first made law. Yet, if we somehow forget that the right and opportunity to vote were only gained as a result of struggle, sacrifice and vigilance, then too many of us will take for granted both the past and the present.

The genius of the Black Press in America has always been its audacious courage to print and distribute the truth even in the face of injustice and inequality. Frederick Douglass said it best when he declared, “Freedom is a constant struggle.” Douglass was

a writer, publisher, orator, scholar and a freedom fighter.

Next year will mark the 190th anniversary of the Black Press. On March 16, 1827, John Russwurm and Samuel Cornish began Freedom’s Journal in New York City as the voice of Black America. From the very first publication of the Black Press up to today, our newspapers covered local, state, national and international news about the conditions and progress of African people as well as all of humanity.

Keeping the legacy of Freedom’s Journal alive in 2016 is vital and mandatory.

The struggles for freedom, justice, equality and empowerment continue with new vibrancy and urgency. Each generation has to rise to the occasion pushing forward to ensure that the quality of life in our communities is improved and celebrated.

Today, there are more than 206 African American-owned newspapers and media companies in the United States who are members of the National Association of Newspaper Publishers (NNPA).

any prospective first time home buyers are realizing how competitive buying a home can be. There are many scams out there. You must remain vigilant and alert at all times or you could lose a lot of money. Since the housing crisis of 2008, the federal government has placed stronger lending regulations on financial institutions. However, there still appears to be many lenders in our community who are not regulated by the government.

Most regulated institutions will only lend a first time home buyer 2 ½ to 3 ½ times their annual income. Some of the unregulated lenders have provided pre-approval amounts for many unsuspecting buyers up to 8-10 times their annual income. This

is why it is important to attend a home buyer education workshop.

The Home Buyer Workshop will emphasize two aspects of the home buying process. The first is creating a monthly household budget.

Your budget, if used properly, will allow you to calculate (1) how much you can save each month in preparation for your purchase; (2) how much you can afford to spend on a home and (3) how soon you will be ready to buy.

The second aspect is making sure you can comfortably afford your monthly mortgage payment. This is a key factor to becoming a successful homeowner.

J

ust outside the Oval Office hangs a painting depicting the night of December 31, 1862. In it, African-American men, women, and children crowd around a single pocket watch, waiting for the clock to strike midnight and the Emancipation Proclama-

tion to take effect. As the slaves huddle anxiously in the dimly lit room, we can sense how even two more minutes seems like an eternity to wait for one’s freedom. But the slaves of Galveston, Texas, had to wait more than two years after Lincoln’s decree and two

months after Appomattox to receive word that they were free at last.

Today we commemorate the anniversary of that delayed but welcome news. Decades of collective action would follow as equality and justice for African-Americans advanced

slowly, frustratingly, gradually, on our nation’s journey toward a more perfect union. On this Juneteenth, we remember that struggle as we reflect on how far we’ve come as a country.

The slaves of Galveston knew their freedom was only a first step, just as the

bloodied foot soldiers who crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge 100 years later knew they had to keep marching.

Juneteenth is a time to recommit ourselves to the work that remains undone.

We remember that even in the darkest hours, there is cause to hope for tomorrow’s

light. Today, no matter our race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation, we recommit ourselves to working to free modern-day slaves around the world and to honoring in our own time the efforts of those who fought so hard to steer our country truer to our highest ideals.

ne Hundred Black Men, Inc. (OHBM), in collaboration with Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E., and the Office of the District Attorney of Manhattan, continues its Gun Buyback Campaign to end gun violence in New York neighborhoods. The OHBM “Honor Thy Father” Gun Buyback Campaign partners with churches, community centers, and corporate affiliates to remove illegal guns from the street, and to strategically target the culture of violence that has created an epidemic among young Black and Latino males. On Saturday, June 18, 2016, OHBM hosted its second Gun Buyback event at Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem.

ducing the number of illegal guns that are available on

the street, OHBM has initiated steps to reach the hearts

and minds of young people that willfully or reluctantly engage in violent behavior. One of our overarching goals is seeking to change a culture that encourages gun violence as a legitimate manner to resolve conflicts.

This effort includes a series of five town hall meetings from May 2016 to May 2017. Together with theirpartners, OHBM will manage a campaign that: 1. Incentivizes the removal of illegal weapons from the street.

2. Addresses the root causes of youth violence.

3. Provides positive male role-models and mentoring to discourage youth from becoming violent offenders.

The Illusions of Reality

“Fantasies change reality. That is their purpose.

They cannot do so in reality but they can do so in the mind that would have reality be different.” This quote from the text section of “A Course in Miracles” is a profound way of addressing the illusions of reality.

Reality is truth according to the teaching of A Course in Miracles which is a study of philosophical thought promoted by the Foundation for Inner Peace.

We live in a socially programed society; much of our concept of reality is perceived facts which cre-

ate illusions of reality. What do you fear? What is it that you don’t like about yourself or your environment?

Why do you feel a certain way about certain people, places or things? The answers to most of the above questions rest on a foundation of perceived facts that have nothing to do with the truth.

What happens when you allow yourself to become depressed? A story is played over and over in your mind. Something happened or something did not happen. The reasons that justify the depressed state are illusionary perceptions that create mental facts. The

path towards deprograming is learning to question the reasons for your anger, depression, sadness, loneliness or any feelings created by an illusion of reality or a perceived truth.

The truth cannot be perceived, the truth is what it is. Perceptions of the truth can only create an illusion of reality, an illusion that can become a psychological prison and a danger to self and others.

Stress is the foundation of most illnesses. Fear and doubt are the two main elements of stress; the perceived truths about self and others manifest from thoughts influenced by fear

and doubt.

It is not easy to admit that most of us see our world through the eyes of a socially programed being with perceptions of truth based on illusions of reality. Meditation, Tai Chi, Ki Training and treatments can be useful tools in deprograming because these types of exercises can allow you to spiritually, mentally and physically step outside of the matrix.

You cannot realize being in the matrix until you are able to step out of it.

When you step outside of the mental matrix you are in the Now. All illusionary thoughts of the past and of

oes this sound like you? The week’s not even over and you’re already stressed about your weekend chores: washing, ironing, cooking and cleaning, errands, family obligations and preparing for the next week (such as planning for what you couldn’t get done over the weekend).

You know the drill. So, it’s no surprise that you are feeling a bit frazzled, and wishing for some, “Calgon take me away” downtime. And don’t feel guilty; it’s okay to take a few precious minutes for

weekend self indulgence.

Manicures, pedicures, facials, getting your hair done, dinner at a nice restaurant and the like are great—and might help you look and feel better—but they are fleeting moments. So how about thinking of another way to indulge? You can still do the regular stuff but, what I am about to suggest is just an additional component, another perspective; one that may actually have longer-lasting results in making you feel better and “beautiful” in spite of your stress.

First start by counting your blessings, then assess how significant your problems really are. We all go

through stressful times, but regardless of what you are experiencing, you won’t have to look far to find someone who has is less fortunate. At least you are able to consider spending a couple of bucks on yourself to do something.

Look beyond yourself and do something completely selfless for someone else.

Skip your manicure, pedicure or facial, and instead give it as a gift certificate to someone who has never received one or who is going through personal or financial hard times.

There is also something else you can give to others, and it’s free—a smile, that’s right, smile with a love that comes from your

heart! It may sound corny, but as the old song goes, “What the world needs now is love sweet love.”

You are an integral part of the world environment, so contribute your love to it.

Then you will see how the joy of giving to others will make you glow from the inside out in a way that no cosmetic treatment ever could. Your true beauty will radiate from that internal glow—a radiance that no lipstick, moisturizer, hairstyle or facial could ever duplicate. Basically, think of my suggestion of feeling better and beautiful through “selfless indulgence” as in the old make-up rule: “Before you apply foundation,

ather’s Day has come and gone again. Have you made any progress in your father/child – child/father relationship? It remains an interesting subject to me when I observe the interaction between the two. In an absentee father scenario is the onus on the children to reach out to the father? Or should the absent father reach out to the children? This dilemma has existed for as long as we have been doing this.

Speaking with Coach Steven Lynn, creator and leader of the Fatherhood Initiative Project, his opinion is that the fathers should reach out to the child/children he has

been apart from.

I agree, but I also feel that the children should at least make an attempt to reach out to their fathers.

The issues between mother and father, unfortunately, overshadow any relationship that could possibly exist between fathers and children. This absence of the father affects both children (male or female) negatively and certainly deprives them of an important part of their development and socialization There are many easily identified reasons that the abyss between mothers and fathers exist and continues to get deeper. The one thing that will never cease to exist

is the love that fathers have for their children – regardless of the situation or circumstances. The problem gets deeper when the fathers fail to demonstrate that love to their children. Many times the gap between the parents has become so wide and so volatile that the children ultimately suffer.

I encourage you, parents and children, to observe the positive and loving interaction between fathers and their children.

The positive presence, even if not under the same roof, has a lasting effect on the children. After all – aren’t the children our main concern – regardless of our adult foolishness?

The many folks who attended the home going service at St. Stephen’s Church on West 116th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd was a living testimony to the great work this man has done for our community. His association with Rev. Vernon Williams and the founding of Perfect Peace Ministries was a major step in his life as well as the development of “Perfect Peace” in our community. He was a great baseball enthusiast as well as a great little league coach.

My son, William, III, was fortunate to have been one of his little league students on the Harlem Reds Little League team coached by Coach Maurice Fawcett.

From June 14th through June 17th my friend Rev. Joseph T. Bright, Jr., celebrated his 40th Pastoral Anniversary.

WALK TALL GIRL PRODUCTION’S “BROADWAY IN BROOKLYN”

Produced by Walk Tall Girl Productions, the outdoor extravaganza will include live excerpt performances of Broadway musicals from talent who are currently performing or have performed on the Great White Way. Headlining the showcase is the hit production “Motown the Musical,” the Tony Award-nominated show based on legendary music producer Berry Gordy’s autobiography that will be returning to Broadway for a limited 18 week-engagement starting on Tuesday, July 12. “This version of the show has some scenic chang-

The Greater Allen Cathedral Connecting to the Community to Uplift, Educate and Empower

T

he Greater Allen A. M. E. Cathedral of New York (GAC) is a change agent in the Jamaica Queens community. In addition to preaching and teaching the word of God, GAC has an array of ministries doing God’s work to address the needs of the church’s members and the community. GAC is engaged in bringing and sharing resources to empower uplift and improve the quality of life for all.

The Lydia Project is a new ministry at GAC that celebrated Juneteenth with a display of over seventy five dolls of color.

During the month of June, African Americans celebrate Juneteenth and it meaning as a part of the history of the United States.

Juneteenth symbolizes the end

of slavery and is celebrated in 200 cities and states such as Texas and Oklahoma have made it a legal holiday. Some celebrations are large and other small, but they all are meaningful. The Lydia Project’s Ministry Coordinator is Sister Barbara Scott a retired educator in the New York City School System. Scott

has never stopped teaching. She teaches the Word of God to children of all ages, 365 days a year and shares her knowledge of the richness of African American culture and history. “The Lydia Project is a new woman rising out of the bible verse Acts 16:14 and culturally enlightens many of us who don’t know about

Also, Allen Church has several Community Programs that were created to improve the quality of life in the surrounding Jamaica area; these programs are Allen Neighborhood Preservation & Development Corporation, Allen Community Senior Citizen Center, Allen Senior Transportation and Allen Women’s Resource Center.
