This week we celebrate “Father’s Day.” This is when we celebrate the men in our lives – our fathers, grandfathers, uncles, step fathers and those men who are like a father in our lives. The statistics are alarming. 72 Percent of African-American Children are Born to ... homes without fathers. 75% of all adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers come from fatherless homes. 63% of youth suicides are from a fatherless home. That is why we celebrate “Men Who Mentor.”

The Harlem Community Newspapers have been honoring and highlighting men who mentor youth as our “Father’s Day” focus for more than 8 years. Last year we brought in several other publishers and together we honored 10 men who mentor youth. Mentors are most important in our community, because of the statistics. So again this Father’s Day we honor – “Men Who Mentor” – Thank you. (see pages 16-19)

Harlem Teacher Honored with Lincoln Center Arts Teacher Award

incoln Center Education, in partnership with the New York City Department of Education presented the 2016 Lincoln Center Arts Teacher award to Dana Monteiro, a high school music teacher at the Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem. The Lincoln Center Arts Teacher Award—part of DOE’s annual Big Apple Awards, a teacher recognition program open to all full-time teachers in public schools across New York City—is presented to an arts teacher for making a difference in the lives of his or her students and for going above and beyond in their role as an arts educator.

Mr. Monteiro is the fourth recipient of this outstanding recognition, and will receive a $3,500 classroom grant to enhance and further his work with students, as well as access to Lincoln Center opportunities.

Mr. Monteiro has 15 years of teaching experience, and throughout his career has maintained a clear focus and dedication to his students via his passion for music. He is a student of Brazilian samba, a musical form that encourages communication, engagement, and improvisation, and has brought these ideals to his classroom. In teaching percussion and samba rhythms to his classes, he has fostered group activity, discussion, and creativity to scores of students, developing a sense of community among them while also teaching them about the culture of the art form.

He is recognized for a non-traditional and forward-thinking approach, and his belief in the importance of arts education in urban schools. His students have performed at TED Talks, the Clinton Global Initiative with the Roots, Brasilfest at South Street Seaport, Carnival with Alô Bra-

sil at the World Café in Philadelphia, Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Broward County Performing Arts Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He has also started Harlem Samba, a Brazilian percussion ensemble modeled after the samba school baterias of the Rio de Janeiro carnival. The group’s members are students, alumni, and friends of the Frederick Douglass Academy, a high-performing public high school in Harlem, New York City.

MUHAMMAD ALI WILL INSPIRE ME UNTIL THE DAY I DIE

“Where you been, boy?”

When I heard those words in June 1966, I knew I was going to have rough time in the U.S. Navy. My immediate reply to that Petty Officer was, “Who are you calling a boy? I am a man!”

I was twenty-one years old, already an angry, Black man who experienced separate bathrooms, water fountains, restaurants at Greyhound bus stops that had “Coloreds served round back” signs posted on their front doors, and having to sit in the balcony of the local theater in Winston-Salem, North Carolina during my two years of high school there.

I was already angry about Medgar Evers, Schwerner, Goodman, and Chaney, and Malcolm X. So I knew at that very moment when I was called a “boy” by this southern White guy, I would be a marked man on that ship because of my belligerence and unwillingness to go along to get along.

Ten months later, when Muhammad Ali refused to step forward to be drafted, I took a step up, got on his shoulders and have been there ever since. My view from that perch has given me the spirit, the drive, the commitment, and the dedication to do what I have done for decades now. His example gave me the audacity and temerity to stand before anyone, White, Black or otherwise, to state my case and stand my ground. A backbone is much

stronger than a wishbone; Ali had backbone, and he passed it on to me without ever knowing it.

Ali and those few athletes who stood with him were giants in a land of cowering, timid, “yessah” men.

He was bold, brash, brave, and brutal in his in-your-face assessment of society’s ills. Ali was the personification of dreams, the realization of hopes, and the culmination of victory, with his fists as well as his voice, which could only be silenced

by Parkinson’s disease.

His impact on my life has lasted for fifty years, and it will continue until I die. When they stripped him of his title and took away his right to earn a living, I became even angrier at the government for such a gross injustice. Years later, watching him fight the daily rounds of his real “Fight of the Century,” against such a relentless opponent as Parkinson’s, my commitment to help others grew even stronger.

Now that I am in the fight of my life, against my greatest opponent, ALS, which is similar to Parkinson’s in some ways, I think about Muhammad Ali often. I think about his children, especially his “Little Girl” Laila, in the same vein I think about my daughter, Kiah. And I pray that I will be strong like he was until the end. Ali’s strength made me a better person. I have the courage of my convictions and the fearless sacrificial mindset of that

man among men.

In today’s society of “make money without making waves,” prominent athletes should learn from Ali. It was not enough to wear hoodies when Trayvon was killed, not enough to turn shirts inside out and throw them on the basketball court in response to a racist franchise owner, not enough to wear “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirts after Eric Garner was choked to death, not enough to stand in front of the Walmart where John Crawford was killed for checking out a BB Gun, not enough just to voice outrage after Sandra Bland died inside a jail cell despite not committing a crime, and not enough to say, “I haven’t really been on top of this issue,” when twelve yearold Tamir Rice was executed for carrying a toy gun in the “Open Carry” State of Ohio. Empty gestures are temporary and cause no real changes.

It’s easier to speak highly of Muhammad Ali than it is to do what he did. I am proud to say that I did what he did, and will continue. I am reminded of the following quote from Ta-Nehisi Coates’ 2003 article titled “Compa$$ionate Capitali$m”: “Forty years [after his death], it’s easy to quote Malcolm and put him on a postage stamp—now that we’ve killed him. He never complained and there was a lot he could have complained about.

While working as a medical assistant at Brooklyn’s Long Island College Hospital, he took a job that of-

There are men who live their entire life with unspoken anguish and heartache.

Many diseases and health afflictions have been shown to be the result of such long-suffering stress. How many men are withholding a story inside that would shake the world if they truly revealed that experience.

We read about men and we talk about men, but who is listening to men. We see their strengths, but we don’t dare explore what we think might be their weaknesses.

Who are men talking to?

With this mindset, I have written the play “The Flip Side of the Coin” The Brothers Speak! The cast

sometimes a second job at night to provide for his family. He never complained or talked about the struggle inside of him and how it felt. His solitude was grounded in a calm persona that presented a worry free existence. He did not want his wife or his children to feel less than the people he worked under.

By the time I was entering high school, my parents purchased a home, my father went back to school and made a turnaround to work at the Northport Veterans Hospital on Long Island. After he survived a major heart attack, I thought about the years of humiliation my father had to swallow in silence. He was a quiet man, short on words, yet profoundly wise

enterPoint Retreats will be conducting a series of three six-day recovery retreats, in Fall of 2016, for women veterans who were deployed during OEF/ OIF. These retreats are funded by the Readjustment Counseling Services division of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and will be entirely free of charge, including airfare, for eligible women Veterans. This will be a continuation of the successful series of six retreats run in 2011, 2012, and 2015. Over 200 women veterans have been served on these retreats, with the vast majority reporting positive increases in general well-being and a reduction in stress symptoms as a result of their participation.

This is a wonderful opportunity for women veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Global War on Terrorism campaigns

and who are actively in the process of transitioning to civilian life. The retreats are

nourishing, educational, and healing, and provide a peaceful and supportive natural en-

vironment for women veterans to reconnect with others, to learn specific, body-centered tools for recovery from PTSD or chronic stress, and to re-orient towards a fulfilling life of ease and satisfaction.

To be eligible, women veterans must have been deployed in OEF/ OIF, and have completed at least three sessions of counseling in the past six months.

Veterans who are not currently in counseling, but would like to

participate in the retreats can get started now on the three-session requirement by contacting their local Veterans Center.

Retreats will be held at the following locations and on the following dates. Veterans are asked to attend the one closest to their home if possible.

"Hamilton" Shined Brilliantly at the Tony Awards

amilton ruled at the 70th Annual Tony Awards that celebrate excellence in Broadway theatre.

The awards, held on Sunday at the Beacon Theatre, saw Hamilton come away with 11 Awards including best musical; best book and original score—Lin-Manuel Miranda; best director of a musical— Thomas Kail; best lead actor in a musical—Leslie Odom, Jr.; best featured actor in a musical—Daveed Diggs; best featured actress in a mu-

sical—Renee Elise Goldsberry; best choreography—Andy Blankenbuehler; best orchestration— Alex Lacamoire; best costume design of a musical—Paul Tazewell and best lighting design of a musical-Howell Binkley. It was a night to remember as Miranda and each of the people in his group of winners got up and thanked the company members and their families.

Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, but does it through the non-tra-

ditional casting of using only a Black and Hispanic cast to play the roles. It is a musical to behold.

And it has something that you won’t find in most Broadway musicals, the use of rap to tell the story and get the audience hyped up. This is a show that is difficult to get tickets to and it has a almost cult following already.

Goldsberry shared, “people stand outside the theatre that don’t have tickets to the show and do sing a-longs with strangers.”

Miranda remarked that “Hamilton is everything that’s inside of me.”

In addition to “Hamilton”, the fantastic revival of “The Color Purple” won the Tony for best revival of a musical and its star Cynthia Erivo, making her Broadway debut, won the Tony for best leading actress in a musical.

This year was the first time that four Black artists won these categories. How wonderful it was to have this mark the 70th Anniversary of the Tony Awards.

Then Tony award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell was presented with the Isabelle Stevenson Award for his 20 years of volunteer work with The Actors Fund. A humanitarian group that helps people in the industry in any way that they need help— financially, housing, professionally.

Detroit, Michigan Theatre teacher/director Marilyn McCormick, made her mark as being the second African American to be honored with the Tony for Theatre Ed-

ucation, given out by the Tony’s and Carnegie Mellon University. She received this distinctive honor because of her work with her theatre students through the decades, who have gone on to have careers in the business.

This is just a marvelous season for Blacks on Broadway.

There are so many shows to choose from: “Hamilton,” “The Color Purple,” “Eclipsed” and “Shuffle Along” and then of course the main stays like “The Lion King.”

Although “Shuffle Along” did not win Tony Awards this year, it is a brilliant production that enlightens audiences about the history of Blacks in musical Theatre on Broadway. It is a musical that has the crème de la crème, Tony winners—Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald, Billy Porter, Brandon Victor Dixon, and Joshua Henry. The choreography

They then paid visits to several members of Congress to discuss issues of importance including Jobs, Educa-

CUNY’s Black Male Initiative Aims to Help Students Soar

L

ast week, Mohammed Omar reached a major milestone in his life: He graduated – with honors – from the City University of New York with a degree in economics.

Omar, 32, a nontraditional student from East Harlem, finished his fouryear program in just two and a half years, and he’ll start his new job as a tax associate for a Fortune 500 company next week.

Omar said the university’s Black Male Initiative (BMI), a CUNY program designed to boost the number of men of color in higher education, was what helped make the difference.

while he was getting his associate’s degree at Borough of Manhattan Community College, and he said he relished knowing there was a place where he could go and get help at almost any time.

“For me,” Omar added, “I was able to do what I did because of services like this. College is a really difficult experience for a young urban man. This kind

of program really helps in motivating and helping students get over difficult courses and difficult times during their college journey.”

The Black Male Initiative is a university wide, multi-pronged program that works to retain underrepresented students – especially young black and Latino men – while boosting their grade point averages and

their graduation rates.

“We do so through a holistic approach,” Jermaine Wright, university director of the Black Male Initiative said. “We realize that underrepresented students are no different from other students, except they lack opportunity. We hope to give them these tools so that they can be successful.”

The BMI helps students through culturally competent peer-to-peer mentoring, tutoring and academic enrichment like conferences, workshops and lectures. The BMI also hosts socio-emotional programs, like “Barber Shop Sessions,” where students can chat informally about issues impacting them.

“We have the ability to

speak about salient topics like police brutality, exonerations – things that are critical to men of color,” Wright said, adding (it’s a place) “where they get the space to vent without being judged.”

And the proof of BMI’s success are in its numbers: black and Latino students in the BMI program working towards their associate’s degree had an average GPA of 2.47 in 2014 compared to a 2.18 GPA of their counterparts who weren’t enrolled.

The BMI program is entirely free, and to be eligible, participants must be CUNY students. However, the initiative’s student mentors must have at least a 3.0 GPA and have been in the program for at least a

year to be considered. If accepted, the student mentors receive $1,000 stipends for the year.

The Black Male Initiative was borne back in 2004 out of university officials’ desire to increase the number of underrepresented students – and particularly students of color – in the CUNY system. The then university chancellor convened a task force, which recommended establishing the initiative.

Since then, the program has more than doubled its number of participants from about 1,400 to more than 3,000, Wright said.

The gala event recognized male mentors who have devoted their time and resources to help educate, elevate and inspire young people. MetroPlus was proud of honoree Donald Joseph LaHuffman, medical manager at MetroPlus Health Plan who was honored for his work as a mentor at the Eagle Academy, Purple and Gold Leadership Academy and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

Donald, who directs and coordinates medical and health care needs of MetroPlus enrollees, was also recognized for establishing the Eric A. Fulton Scholarship award, named for a deceased friend.

Awards are given to high school seniors accepted at a university or community college who demonstrates character; and are, as Don-

ald states, “a diamond in the rough with at least a 2.5 GPA”.

Donald’s mentoring focus this year is linking with more established entities through his chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Psi Lambda Lambda and other institutions such as Big Brother, Big Sister organizations, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Fatherhood Initiative and CUNY’s Black Male Initiative 20172018, to name a few.

Being a mentor and working with young black men is a true endeavor of the heart and takes a special man who is willing to be a father figure and devote the time, energy and effort to our community’s young men. With the knowledge that a very high number

of children in the black community grow up without a father in the home we asked Donald why he felt so strongly about being a mentor. He stated, “My upbringing, having a dad, extended family, positive male role models who demonstrated character, love and fairness daily and the mentoring I receive in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.” This summer Donald and his Omega Psi Phi chapter are supporting a workshop on Black Male Initiatives through the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. In addition the Omega Psi Phi, Inc., Fatherhood Initiative, Omega Trailblazers, Harlem Little League baseball team and scholarship awards will continue.

ever possible. Never make a decision for children that they reasonably can make for themselves. “Parents who make decisions unilaterally rob children of the opportunity to practice the art of making good choices,” Herst says.

• Let children make mistakes. This might seem counterintuitive in terms of happiness.

Most people, after all, don’t feel happy when they make a mistake.

But when you allow children to make mistakes they learn that their actions have consequences, so over the long haul they become more confident in their decision-making abilities.

• Delegate responsibility to children.

Put them in charge of household chores and let them take responsibility for their actions.

By assigning a responsible job to a child, the parent is saying that the child will perform in a mature way, Herst says.

• Provide children with pleasant experiences. Too often, parents have a set of convictions about what a child should do, not what the child might

want to do and enjoy. But children, like adults, enjoy repeating pleasant, gratifying and successful experiences, while avoiding unpleasant ones.

So parents should take steps to make sure special experiences for a child are pleasant and rewarding.

Herst says it’s important that parents start early in taking steps to raise happy children who will grow into happy adults.

“Once a youngster has progressed through puberty into adolescence, most of the parenting work is already finished,” Herst says.

“If a good foundation hasn’t been built by then, it’s probably too late.”

Any good parent wants to raise happy, well-adjusted children, but the way they go about it often undermines that goal.

“As a rabbi, I’ve watched a lot of parents over the years,” says Rabbi Roger Herst, author of “A Simple Formula for Raising Happy Children” (www.rogerherst.com). “Many of them don’t seem to be achieving what they want for their children.

They try hard, they mean well, yet they still miss the mark.”

But it doesn’t have to be that way, he says.

“For one thing, parents who think they are being good parents by barking orders are kidding themselves,” Herst says. “Kids don’t listen, they imitate.

The Month of June

une is my favorite month. Many of my milestones and life experiences have taken place in June, including my birth. June has always provided me with both happy and sad reflections. June 2016 will be no different. I shall always remember it to be the month that the Greatest transcended.

As a young man growing up in the 60’s and 70’s Muhammad Ali was a hero and inspiration to me and many young Black men during that period in American

history. It was a time of redefining and discovering who we were and who we were not.

When you have the courage and faith to believe in yourself, you can achieve what many consider greatness. Ali taught us by example that we all had the ability to be great if we truly believed in ourselves; this is why he will always be the Greatest.

June is also the month when summer begins.

In Taoist wellness strategies the heart (Yin) and the small intestine (Yang) are the two vital organs affected by June,

the month that represents the element of fire and the red planet of Mars.

Hearts of fire create love.

Desire is a very appropriate theme for the month of June.

The 2016 Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic will take place on June 19, 2016, the day that I was born a few decades ago. This historic event was created by an African-American police officer David Walker.

In the beginning the cycling event was focused on bicycle racing and cycling safety awareness programs for community youth.

In a few years this annual June event, which is always held on Father’s Day, became a premiere attraction of the United States Cycling Federation attracting national and international cycling champions as well as local cyclists from Harlem and the greater New York area to compete. Nelson Beasley Vails was one of the local cyclists who competed in this event. Nelson was a bike messenger who lived in the projects on 115th street and Lenox Avenue.

ter than many of the professional cyclists each year at the Skyscraper Classic, allowed him to be discovered by scouts and become a national and international champion himself. t’s your turn to rally the troops. In case you have somehow forgotten, Father’s Day is just around the corner, June 19, as a matter of fact. Most men feel that Father’s Day doesn’t have quite the same emotional impact that Mother’s Day has and so this is your opportunity to prove them wrong.

First of all remember your own father, then help your children (young or old) express their love and appreciation to their dad in very thoughtful ways. It’s easy to run out and buy him his favorite cologne and after shave, socks, a tie, shirts, cufflinks or a sweater; but take on the challenge of finding that really special something

that will surprise him. Here are a few ideas . . .

Think about starting his day with a time honored tradition: Breakfast in bed! That’s right, Dad would love it if instead of wondering what’s for breakfast, it’s served to him before his feet even touch the floor in the morning. Be sure to enlist the children in creating the menu, preparing the meal and setting the tray; and don’t forget a single flower in a small bud vase for a touch of mushiness . . . he’ll like it too.

Is he a weekend athlete? If he plays tennis, is a biker or golfer, how about a few classes with a pro to help him improve his technique? Is there a special piece of equipment that he has his sight set on buying? Would he enjoy tickets to a sporting event? Private sessions with a personal trainer to improve his physical condition are a good idea, that way maybe

he will avoid injuries that affect most “weekend warriors.”

What are his hobbies? Is he an artist, musician? Think about giving him the gift of a class to help him expand his creative side. Is there a gallery that he would like to visit or a concert he wants to go to? Have one of his favorite paintings, collages or sculptures framed or mounted for display or encourage him to have a small exhibit of his art at home or a jazz session; and invite family, friends and neighbors to attend. Everyone could pitch in to create the invitations and cater his debut!

Commemorate a special moment with the children. It is just as simple as it sounds, frame a picture! Search through family photographs to find one that brings back poignant memories; maybe it was the birth of a child and Dad holding the baby in his

arms for the first time. Was he frolicking with the children on the playground, at the beach, in the living room floor? Did you attend an event as a family and someone took a picture that was really nice? Maybe he caught a big fish or scored the winning point while playing baseball, football, basketball; any moment of glory is good.

Does he collect anything? I have a friend who collects elephants! Another collects baseball caps, still another finds old fishing lures interesting. If he is a collector, then do a little research on the subject and look for an unusual addition to add to his assortment of items. If you have difficulty finding an item, consider a book that is the definitive guide to help him identify his treasures.

If all else fails, give him complete control of the television remote for an entire week!

T

wo heads are better than one.

Another body can make work lighter, both in mood and in task. A partner can support you, encourage you, inspire you, and sympathize with you. You solve easier with another mind on the problem. Yes, two heads are better than one, and in the new book “Running with the Champ” by Tim Shanahan (with Chuck Crisafulli), so are four feet.

People who knew Muhammad Ali probably wouldn’t be surprised that he met Tim Shanahan in 1970 because of a charity event.

Shanahan was working

with a Chicago organization, and needed a big-name sports hero to “deliver a motivational speech to the students.” His connections led to Ali, who invited Shanahan into his home and his life. They were friends almost instantly; days later, they became regular running partners.

It was a rather informal situation, says Shanahan: they ran when they could, near a park in Chicago. This was after Ali’s three-year boxing suspension, and both knew that the Champ needed encouragement; Shanahan, the better runner, gave it to him. The unlikely friendship began to deepen:

the black Muslim athlete who came from the wrong side of the Louisville tracks and the Catholic white guy born in Wisconsin would lay in the grass after their run, discussing their childhoods, favorite things, dreams, and life in general.

Being Ali’s friend was a wild ride through the years.

The Champ was often abrupt with his demands, both to Shanahan and to others; he didn’t suffer fools gladly, and expected his wishes to be quickly granted. He was generous, monetarily and time-wise, with nearly everyone he saw, giving away a good portion of his income (and, suppos-

Ali loved meeting celebrities, hated unsolicited advice, could be stubborn (especially in his career), and had a surprising jealous streak, but he was funny and larger-than-life. Then, around the time Ali retired, things changed: he started uncharacteristically losing his patience with many in his inner circle – including Shanahan.

In 1984, a diagnosis of “parkinsonism” explained everything…

In many such memoirs based on celebrity, you’ll often find a distracting amount of name-dropping and braggadocio. You might even expect that in a memoir about Muham-

mad Ali, but the surprise is that author Tim Shanahan (with Chuck Crisafulli) doesn’t focus on that alone.

Instead, “Running with the Champ” is a loving tribute to a friendship.

And yet – as in so many relationships between famous and not-famous, there were the not-so-good-times, and Shanahan includes those among his stories.

Here, we see a big-hearted athlete in action, and sometimes struggling. We also get a heartbreaking glimpse of Ali and his determination to hang on to the shreds of a career that was done.

For fans who’ve read everything they can on Ali’s fights, this is a look from a different angle at the man himself, from a fan-turned-

friend who may’ve never really known Ali at all. If you need a book about The Greatest, then, “Running with The Champ” may be one of the better ones.

igh school students nationwide can now apply to be among 100 students selected to participate in the 2017 Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE, the innovative, outside-the-classroom, mentoring program at Walt Disney World Resort. The 2017 Disney Dreamers Academy will mark the program’s 10th year.

Steve Harvey, syndicated radio and television personality, along with ESSENCE and Walt Disney World Resort will host selected Dreamers during

a four-day power-packed career and educational exploration in March 2017.

I’m the prettiest thing that ever lived”. --Muhammad Ali Growing up, I believed my father was Superman except instead of a red cape, he drove a red car for a while, and we kids nicknamed it the “red baron”.

He also had the most beautiful speaking and singing voice I’ve ever heard –a cross between Barry

White and Nat King Cole.

I thought he could do anything --leap tall buildings in a single bound, bend steel with his bare hands (given his 6 foot, 2 inch, 200+ lb. frame), play conga drums like Baba Olatunje, box like Muhammad Ali and even cook the aprons off of chefs from Julia Childs to Emeril Lagassi. Yes, there was a time I thought my Dad could do anything –except leave us so soon.

This Sunday as we prepare to acknowledge and celebrate Father’s Day all across the nation, let us remember to urge the men in our lives –particularly men of color, who suffer disproportionately from almost every major preventative disease and whom statistics show are less likely to have

routine medical checkups than any other population--to take charge of their health, for it is indeed their wealth.

No doubt factors contributing to this fact includes: the male psyche which naturally resists any signs of weakness, a lack of health insurance and social services that specifically target the wellness of black men and the general distrust factor that many black men justifiably feel as a result of historical practices in the medical establishment (such as infamous Tuskegee Experiments) that contribute to reluctance of many black men in seeking medical care, often until it’s too late.

Women – let’s encourage our men to not just

“see a doctor”, but to partner with their doctor as an equal in developing a successful health strategy that will surely result in better outcomes. Adam C. Powell said it best: “what’s in your hands?” – and as my father beat the djembe I’m going to keep beating Powell’s message every chance I get because the answer really is: our health is in our hands! It’s all about simple solutions we CAN DO to minimize

what we won’t or can’t do based on a variety of circumstances.

A message for our men – we as women love you and want you present and active in our lives. Here’s what you CAN DO: find a low-moderate intensity exercise routine that you enjoy for a minimum of 30 minutes a day. Even if you’re limited in mobility, chair exercise and even light movement exercises in bed can be a very effective strategy for

gradually increasing mobility. Nutritious foods such as garlic, onions, green leafy cruciferous vegetables, and berries contain some of the strongest, cancer fighting, immune system building compounds on the market.

Bronx Residents Clean the Streets

Operation Cleaner Streets, a program headed up by Council Member King, strives to encour-

age community residents in the 12th District to pick up trash in front of their homes, bus stops and subway stations and heavily trafficked streets. The program was initiated when Council Member King took office in 2012. In the past, Operation Cleaner Streets has tackled business corridors along Gun Hill Road, White Plains Road and Boston Road.

By Keith L. Forest n Saturday June 4, 2016, eight Brooklyn-based youth entrepreneurs from the Build an Empire program unveiled their Brooklyn Creative Market Pop-up Shop. The youthrun and operated affair took place on the scenic rooftop of the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Over 65 young vendors showed up to peddle their creations, services and startup solutions. The event also featured live performances from a variety of talented young performers, live paintings and creative demonstrations and exhibi-

tions. Sponsored by Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Coca Cola, Kiva, and Project Enterprise, the affair attracted over 500 patrons aided in generating over $20,000 in sales.

Headed by Brooklyn-based entrepreneur Lloyd J. Cambridge, former Director of NYC Business Solution Center, “Build an Empire” was funded with a grant by Brooklyn Community Foundation and received support from Bridge Street Development Corp., Council Member Robert Cornegy, New Visions Charter School, Mott Hall Academy, Kiva and Project

Enterprise. “We need to focus on developing the entrepreneurial spirit in our young people,” stated City Councilman Robert E. Cornegy.

“They need to understand that this is their neighborhood and they can live here, work here, own a piece of the pie, and yes start an empire.”

Build an Empire is the brainchild of Brooklyn-based entrepreneur Lloyd J. Cambridge, who heads up Progress Playbook, an entrepreneur and startup educational consortium that supports dreamers, believers and doers build businesses that impact the world. Currently in its beginning stages, the program takes 8- to 10 individuals through an intense 10-week training program where they collaborate with a team of entrepreneurs, influencers and experts that aid the students in starting and operating a business.

Students learn basic skills in product development, marketing, finance and operations while coming up with creative ways to solve real world problems that present a business opportunity.

The affair culminates with the Creative Market pop-up shop, which provides participants a chance to market and sell their goods and services while offering them an opportunity to earn income and qualify to win a $1,000 grand prize to help support the launch of their own business. “Helping young people actualize their

The inaugural winner of the Build an Empire program was designer Aliyah Paterson. She attends Urban Ac-

tion Academy and will use her $1,000 grand prize to launch her startup fashion line Riot Girl. In addition to the cash prize, Paterson will receive support from a team of experts who will assist in developing, starting and successfully running her new venture. “The experience I

received in the Start an Empire project taught me that with access to the right networks, hard work and focus all things are possible”, said Paterson. “I look forward to growing my business with the information, network and resources that I gained through the project.”
