Congratulations Cheryl Wills on being honored by the Israeli Consulate during their annual recognition of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King event. I have been inspired by your books to begin to trace my own family’s roots. Keep up the good works you do in the community by inspiring our youth and others to research their family history. Small Business Owners Listen Up! – Series 2 By Derrick Howard, Accountant, Sr. Tax Associate, The Koger Group, Inc.
M
any small business owners unfortunately are inadequately prepared
when it comes to managing cash flow or endeavoring to raise money. While it can be difficult to forecast every financial need when running a business. The following are just two financial shortcomings for small business owners to avoid and important tips to consider when dealing with the financial management of a business: 1. Cash reserves. The first situation is a lack of
insufficient, cash reserves. It is often common for small business to suffer from negative cash flow during their existence. The brutal fact is that however well you think you may have forecast requirements, running a business will almost always cost more than one planned. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that there is a sufficient estimate of cash reserves on hand to cover
any unforeseen speedbump before positive cash flow comes into play. 2. Cash flow forecasting. The second common failing is a lack of cash flow forecasting. Predicting future cash flow needs is vitally important for a small business, without knowing future cash flow needs, a small business does not know how much cash will be needed to operate, or ser-
vice debt. Knowing or estimating what should be held in reserve, as part of the cash flow budgets is a useful and necessary tool of managing cash flow. Without knowing the figures, a small business owner cannot know how much cash can be allocated for operating, servicing debt, or held as reserves. A cash flow budget is an essential tool, it is critical to estimate as accurately as
possible future cash flow needs. Rather than trying to “wing it”, in order to achieve a sound financial strategy one should always discuss cash flow and reserves with their accountant or financial advisor.

*For the Apple Bank BONUS Savings account, interest earned on daily balances of $2,500 or more at these tiers: $2,500-$24,999: .10% Annual Percentage Yield (APY), $25,000 and up: .75% APY. There is no interest paid on balances of $0-$2,499. APYs disclosed effective as of January 5, 2016. APYs may be changed at any time at the Bank’s discretion. There is a minimum of $2,500 required to open the Apple Bank BONUS Savings account. $2,500 minimum daily balance is required to avoid $10 monthly maintenance fee. Fees may reduce earnings. Funds used to open this account cannot be from an existing Apple Bank account. Maximum deposit amount is $1,000,000 per household. **Special bonus feature: A .25% simple interest rate bonus will be paid on each anniversary date of account opening on the lowest balance for that year (anniversary date to anniversary date). No bonus is paid if the account balance is less than $2,500 on the anniversary date. Additional deposits during a given anniversary period do not affect the bonus interest payment. Deposits made to the account on any anniversary date will be used to calculate the lowest account balance for the next anniversary period. The bonus interest is calculated on the lowest balance on deposit from one anniversary date to the next anniversary date. Simple interest rate bonus is subject to change at any time after first anniversary date of account opening. Hypothetical example of how bonus works: Assume an account is opened on January 12, 2016 for $50,000. A $10,000 withdrawal is made on July 12, 2016. No other withdrawals are made prior to the January 12, 2017 anniversary date. The low balance is now $40,000, so $100 in bonus interest will be paid on January 12, 2017. apple bk - HARLEM NEWS - BONUS SAVINGS IN COLOR - 1-2016.indd 1

Home Buying In Harlem Be Prepared to Buy Now
C
Homeowners
by Rev. Charles Butler
an anyone afford to buy a home in Harlem? Yes we are still exploring this issue. This is the most serious challenge facing low to moderate income prospective first time home buyers today. The prices of homes in Harlem are getting higher and higher. But many first time prospective home buyers are stepping up their level of commitment to accept this challenge. They have decided to pursue their dream of becoming homeowners and will allow nothing to stop them. Their attitude in completing the home buying process is commendable. They thoroughly understand it will still take a great deal of hard work and perseverance. Here are a few tips to keep
in mind: (1) Continue to save as much money as possible for your purchase. Bank your tax return. Reduce your monthly living expenses by using a monthly household budget. Create additional income. If necessary take on a second job. Understand as a prospective first time home buyer you will need at least the minimum down payment amount that can be anywhere from 3-5% of the purchase price. If you are considering a multi-family home, expect a down payment as high as 20%. (2) Increase your credit score. The higher your score the more you will be able to negotiate a lower interest rate. Remember most lenders will want to see 3-4 active lines

Pay your bills on time to avoid late fees that can lower your score. (3) Remain positive throughout the process. Do not entertain any negative thoughts. DAYMOND JOHN HOLDS BOOK SIGNING IN HARLEM FOR HIS NEW BOOK “THE POWER OF BROKE”
D
aymond John will be signing his new book, The Power of Broke. at MIST, 46 West 116th Street @ Lenox in Harlem on Thursday, January 19th at 7pm. Daymond John takes an insightful look at individuals who’ve launched their own powerful brands and careers from a place of desperation, harnessing the “power of broke” to think creatively, alternatively, and aggressively in order to make a meaningful mark. Daymond John shares stories from his own groundbreaking career, as he re-fash-
ioned the fashion industry in his own way, offering his own hardwon insights on what it takes to get noticed in a crowded room, in a crowded field, or in a crowded marketplace. “The Power of Broke is a mindset that I’ve used throughout my business career,” says Daymond John. “I truly believe this is what separates the entrepreneurs from the “wantrepreneurs.” In his new book, John shows readers that success often finds us in desperation mode, when we have no choice but to go for it – hard. He
interviewed influential friends, partners, colleagues and industry pace setters from the fields of fashion, media, technology, finance, entertainment, sports, education, entrepreneurship and social networking. Taken together, these stories, interwoven with his own, provides readers with a template for how to make things happen in their own lives and careers, and to harness the absolute “power” that occurs when the odds are long and the deck is stacked against us. The Power of Broke is published by Crown Business Books, a subsidiary
of Random House. Those attending the event will have an opportunity to record a 2 minute video of their own “Power of Broke” stories and testimonials to share on social media providing motivation and momentum for others to pursue their own entrepreneurial efforts. Book signing event sponsors are: MillerCoors, Black Hawk Imports - Wine & Spirits, Canei Anniversario, ORS Hair Care, eLo Lip Care, Dr. Miracle’s, Grand Central Beauty and The Brownstone. A portion of the proceeds from the book
signing event will provide admission and a hard cover edition of the book for students from Bayside High School in Queens, New York, Daymond John’s Alma Mater. $30 General Admission ticket includes: book and attendance at live on-stage interview and book-signing opportunity. Doors open at 7:00pm. Seating is first come first served. From his sensationally popular role on TV to his newly appointed status as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, Daymond John’s name has
become synonymous with success. Ever since he started the global apparel brand FUBU, For Us, By Us, with no funding and a $40 budget, John has been practicing The Power of Broke. He devised a creative campaign that eventually launched the FUBU brand into a $6 billion global phenomenon. Blackout for Human Rights and Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA) hosted #MLKNOW, an event that celebrated the words and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Riverside Church in Harlem New York on the holiday honoring Dr. King. The event, hosted by director Ryan Coogler, featured some of today’s most talented young artists, including Michael B. Jordan, J.
Cole and Anika Noni Rose, as well as veterans like Harry Belafonte, Chris Rock, and Octavia Spencer. The event featured actors and actresses not only reciting the words of Dr. King But the event not only celebrated the words of MLK but numerous other black male and female leaders from the past. Coogler noted that a major source of inspiration for the event were the continuous murders of black people by those responsible for protecting us. Writer of the hit Broadway show “Ham-
ilton” Lin-Manuel Miranda opened the program reciting a speech that Dr. King gave at the same venue at Riverside Church on April, 4, 1967. Actor Michael B. Jordan read a speech by Fred Hampton, evoking the fire and passion one would believe would have impressed Hampton himself. Ever the comedian, Chris Rock followed Jordan, joking “I really appreciate having to follow the heartthrob” to laughter, before reading a speech by James Baldwin, who, ironically, was the only male whose work was used
who wasn’t murdered. Other highlights included Andre Holland delivering a speech by Malcolm X, whose words resonated with the audience, Anika Noni Rose as Sojourner Truth, Condola Rashad as Shirley Chisholm, Adepero Oduye as Ida B. Wells, Tessa Thompson as Angela Davis, and Octavia Spencer as Dr. King. The legendary Harry Belafonte, who was escorted to the stage by Jordan, Coogler and his brother and introduced as an “OG”, read the work of Patrice Lumumba, before discuss-
ing his relationship with Dr. King. “We met in my home to discuss strategy” Belafonte said, adding that “the next big campaign was to be the Poor People’s Campaign. He added that Dr. King said “we are intergrating into a burning house,” and in response to that, he iconic leader said “we’re just going to have to become firemen.” The event also featured performances by India Arie, Jussie Smollett, Anika Noni Rose, Karenga Bailey, and more. There were many leaders who were celebrated yesterday, but Dr.
King was the star of the show. Perhaps the best quote I heard was recited by Miranda using the late Reverend’s words from his speech at Riverside Church. “Procrastination is still the thief of time,” and still is nearly 50 years after his speech.

Excerpt from President Obama State of the Union Address
Harlem Community Newspapers | January 21, 2016
“Tonight marks the eighth year that I’ve come here to report on the State of the Union. … And I understand that because it’s an election season, expectations for what we will achieve this year are low. But, Mr. Speaker, I appreciate the constructive approach that you and the other leaders took at the end of last year to pass a budget and make tax cuts permanent for working families. So I hope we can work together this year on some bipartisan priorities like criminal justice reform and helping people who are battling prescription drug abuse and heroin abuse. So, who knows, we might surprise the cynics again. But tonight, I want to go easy on the traditional list of proposals for the year ahead. Don’t worry, I’ve got plenty, from helping students learn to write computer code to personalizing medical treatments for patients. And I will keep pushing for progress on the work that I believe still needs to be done. Fixing a broken immigration system. Protecting our kids from gun violence. Equal pay for equal work. Paid leave. Raising the minimum wage. All these things still matter to hardworking families. They’re still the right thing to do. And I won’t let up until they get done. We live in a time of extraordinary change -10
change that’s reshaping the way we live, the way we work, our planet, our place in the world. It’s change that promises amazing medical breakthroughs, but also economic disruptions that strain working families. It promises education for girls in the most remote villages, but also connects terrorists plotting an ocean away. It’s change that can broaden opportunity, or widen inequality. And whether we like it or not, the pace of this change will only accelerate. America has been through big changes before -- wars and depression, the influx of new immigrants, workers fighting for a fair deal, movements to expand civil rights. Each time, there have been those who told us to fear the future; who claimed we could slam the brakes on change; who promised to restore past glory if we just got some group or idea that was threatening America under control. And each time, we overcame those fears. We did not, in the words of Lincoln, adhere to the “dogmas of the quiet past.” Instead we thought anew, and acted anew. We made change work for us, always extending America’s promise outward, to the next frontier, to more people. And because we did -- because we saw opportunity where others saw only peril -- we emerged stronger and
better than before….. First, how do we give everyone a fair shot at opportunity and security in this new economy? Second, how do we make technology work for us, and not against us -- especially when it comes to solving urgent challenges like climate change? Third, how do we keep America safe and lead the world without becoming its policeman? And finally, how can we make our politics reflect what’s best in us, and not what’s worst? ….. We agree that real opportunity requires every American to get the education and training they need to land a good-paying job. The bipartisan reform of No Child Left Behind was an important start, and together, we’ve increased early childhood education, lifted high school graduation rates to new highs, boosted graduates in fields like engineering. In the coming years, we should build on that progress, by providing Pre-K for all and offering every student the hands-on computer science and math classes that make them jobready on day one. We should recruit and support more great teachers for our kids. And we have to make college affordable for every American. No hardworking student should be stuck in the
red. We’ve already reduced student loan payments to 10 percent of a borrower’s income. And that’s good. But now, we’ve actually got to cut the cost of college. Providing two years of community college at no cost for every responsible student is one of the best ways to do that, and I’m going to keep fighting to get that started this year. It’s the right thing to do. … I believe that in this new economy, workers and start-ups and small businesses need more of a voice, not less. The rules should work for them. And I’m not alone in this. This year I plan to lift up the many businesses who’ve figured out that doing right by their workers or their customers or their communities ends up being good for their shareholders. And I want to spread those best practices across America. That’s part of a brighter ing the rest of the world -- except when we kill future. I told you earlier all terrorists -- or occuthe talk of America’s pying and rebuilding economic decline is whatever society is unpolitical hot air. Well, raveling. Leadership so is all the rhetoric means a wise applicayou hear about our en- tion of military power, emies getting stronger and rallying the world and America getting behind causes that are weaker. Let me tell you right. It means seeing something. The United our foreign assistance States of America is the as a part of our national most powerful nation security, not something on Earth…. separate, not charity. ,,, The point is AmerThe future we want ican leadership in the -- all of us want -- op21st century is not a portunity and security choice between ignor- for our families, a ris-
ing standard of living, a sustainable, peaceful planet for our kids -- all that is within our reach. But it will only happen if we work together. It will only happen if we can have rational, constructive debates. It will only happen if we fix our politics.,,, …I stand here confident as I have ever been that the State of our Union is strong. Thank you. God bless you. God bless the United States of America.”

RANGEL HONORS DR. KING AND HIS LEGACY
C
Harlem Community Newspapers | January 21, 2016
ongressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on January 18, 2016: “On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, our nation honors the life of a remarkable man who dramatically changed our nation and the world for the better in the pursuit of justice, equality and freedom for all. Though his life was tragically cut short, his legacy continues to inspire us in our ongoing march towards a building a land where people would be judged by the content of their character, rather than their background. Until his death in 1968, Dr. King led the Civil Rights Movement and helped spur passage of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. In
12
1965, I proudly marched from Selma to Montgomery with Dr. King and John Lewis, who would later become my friend and colleague in the House of Representatives. I witnessed Dr. King’s faith, leadership and courage firsthand, which has been a constant source of strength and motivation through my 45 years serving in Congress. As we honor the memory of Dr. King, who once said, ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice’, let us keep working
towards a world without prejudice and poverty. We must strive to improve income inequality, reduce gun violence, and increase access to education and healthcare if we are to achieve the dream poignantly laid out by Dr. King at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. I will not stop working to make that dream a reality with President Obama in our final year in office. However, it will be up to all of us and those who come after to build upon our progress towards a better future.”
A Statement from CUNY -Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Day By: Chancellor James B. Milliken
T
he Chancellor of CUNY made the following statment regrding MLK Day. “The City University of New York is built on many principles, but none is more important than our dedication, for more than 160 years, to opportunity, social justice and inclusion. While some universities have mottos, at CUNY we have causes, providing New Yorkers, particularly those underrepresented in our society, the education and skills they need for achieving their dreams and building better communities.
The national holiday recognizing that great American, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is particularly meaningful to us at CUNY because he articulated so brilliantly, and advanced at such cost, the values to which we, too, are committed. His struggle reminds us that constructing a just society is hard work, and that the battle against discrimination must continue so that all of us have the opportunity to set our ambitions high, and reach them. At the heart of Dr. King’s message was a belief that the battle to overcome division benefited not just those excluded
from the benefits of a free society but our entire country, which was denied the creativity and energy of those left out. CUNY was built on that principle and we – and our city and state – have thrived because of our embrace of underrepresented New Yorkers, including immigrants from all over the world, who bring optimism and fresh thinking to our classrooms. As we recall the life and work of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, I hope we can reflect on and rededicate ourselves to his vision of justice and inclusion.”

DOE’s Language Access Expansion Builds Important Bridge to City’s Public School Families By Steven Choi, Executive Director, NY Immigration Coalition
F
or years, advocates and community based organizations have urged the New York City Department of Education to increase the translation and interpretation services to public school parents and guardians with limited English proficiency. On Monday, I was honored to join NYC Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, a true champion for the immigrant community to announce a series of initiatives aimed at easing language access for parents in schools. Immigrant families face tremendous obstacles – speaking to their child’s teacher or principal should not be one of them. With
nearly half of public school students – almost half a million families – speaking a language other than English at home, it is essential that these families have the ability to participate in their child’s school lives. That’s why the New York Immigration Coalition and
our Education Collaborative of member organizations representing Asian, Arab, Caribbean, African, Latino, and other immigrant families, launched our “Build the Bridge” Campaign that advocated for increased translation and interpretation for im-
p.m. In the past, schools had to contact the Translation and Interpretation Unit, which then connected the call – a step that has been eliminated. This will help reduce wait time for an interpreter, and allow teachers and staff to call non-English speaking families after business hours. Interpreters are available in 200 languages. In addition, starting this month, members of the Citywide and Community Education Councils will also receive additional language support. We want our elected parent leaders to be representative of our diverse school system and want to make sure they are able to communicate among
migrant parents. And we are grateful that the DOE has stepped up and heard our calls. The DOE’s language access expansion efforts are a significant step that will help notably reduce language gaps in our schools. The expansion includes the creation of nine new full-time positions in the Borough Field Support Centers and Affinity Groups that will determine the specific needs of each school, and build the necessary supports so that parents receive quality translation and interpretation services. The expansion also includes new direct access to over-the-phone interpreters available after 5
themselves no matter the language they speak. Having the ability to communicate with parents in a language they understand and in a timely fashion is key to the DOE’s work with parents. We will continue working to ensure that immigrant students and parents are provided with culturally competent services to further strengthen this bridge to immigrant families that the DOE with help and support from advocates has built. We celebrate this groundbreaking accomplishment and thank Chancellor Fariña and the DOE for their continued efforts to improve services for immigrant families all across our City.

hand sanitizer throughout the day to combat contamination. Keep Your Cool Even the best preparation can leave your family susceptible to cold and flu. Fever and chills could be a sign you’re getting sick. Remember, a fever isn’t always a bad thing. It means your body is working hard to fight off infection. But for parents of small children, putting feverish kids to bed at night can still be unnerving. New technology can help you rest at night. For example, TempTraq, available at Amazon.com, is a Bluetooth wearable temperature monitor in the form of a soft, comfortable patch. It records your child’s temperature every 10 seconds for 24 hours, sending the data to your smartphone via a free, downloadable app. You can view real-time data or receive
alerts when your child reaches a user-set “red zone” level. “A 24-hour temperature monitor that continuously records a child’s temperature readings could alleviate many parent’s concerns when caring for a sick child,” says Aris Eliades, director of Nursing research, Akron Children’s Hospital. “The child can rest, the parent can be alerted if anything changes, and we as nurses and physicians get needed information to make better decisions for patients.” Find yourself with a stubborn fever? Adults can use it too. Consider keeping TempTraq in your medicine cabinet for unexpected fevers all season long. Take proactive steps for a healthy household. And, when all else fails, grab a hot cup of tea with honey and lemon, a warm blanket and a good movie.

t’s that time of year again. From minor colds to severe flus and fevers, seasonal sicknesses are unpredictable and can sneak up on your family at any time. Unfortunately, even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cannot predict the timing, severity and length of a seasonal virus. Luckily, there are steps you can take to ward off illness and better monitor symptoms when you’re sick. Check in with Your Doctor Make an appointment with your primary care physician to get a look at the family’s vitals. These are good indicators of overall wellness. Plus, it’s a great time to schedule that annual flu shot, if you haven’t already done this. If you’re pregnant, have kids, or are a caregiver to elderly parents, it’s an even better idea to get vaccinated, as these are the most at-risk groups for complications from flu. If you don’t have time to schedule a full exam, many pharmacies like CVS offer quick, in-store vaccinations. Practice Healthy Living Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Get enough sleep, eat the right foods to ensure proper nutrition, drink plenty of water and exercise regularly. Avoid close contact with sick people, and maintain a safe distance from others when you are sick. If necessary, stay home from work or school to keep your germs from spreading. Cover your mouth and nose with a sleeve or tissue when coughing or sneezing. Sanitize doorknobs, light switches and work areas with germ-killing soap. Ayurveda: The Science of Life, Prevention and Longevity By William A. Rogers
y first introduction to natural healing wellness methods was the study of Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurveda pronounced “eye-oor-vay-dah” is considered by many in the East as the mother of all healing arts; it is known as the science of life, prevention and longevity. Ayurveda has its roots in India, where 2,000-year old Ayurvedic writings have been found. This knowledge is also recorded in of the Vedic texts: the Atharva and the Rig, which are more than 5,000 years old. Ayurveda was studied in other ancient cultures. China, Egypt, Tibet, and West Africa all adapted it into their own natu-
ral healing systems. The early Greeks brought Ayurveda to Europe from Egypt. I studied Ayurvedic medicine under Dr. Alex Guervaz at the New York Ayurvedic Center. Dr Guervaz is a medical doctor specializing in pathology and allopathic medicine. Dr. Guervaz studied under the well-known Seami Sada Shiva at the famous Bayville, New York Ayurvedic Center. I became a certified Ayurvedic medicine practitioner in 1995. My certification was awarded by the Hindi Sahitya Sammeian University in Allahabad India. Ayurveda specializes in holistic natural remedies and pre-
vention, and it focuses on rebuilding the cells and tissues to support longevity. Ayurvedic healing tools are herbs, yoga exercises, Vedic massages, steam therapy, and sauna aromatherapy. An Ayurvedic practitioner will use a personalized method of conducting a healing program by analyzing the individual’s constitution, also called the “health blueprint” or “body type.” This information is obtained through questionnaires that identify your body’s characteristics, known as the three doshas, or tridosha: Vata (air), Pitta (fire) or Kapha (water). Pulse and urine analysis are
also used. It was during this time that I was introduced to Uropathy, the study of urine therapy (see www.theartofwarogers.info). The focus of Ayurvedic healing is on the search for the root cause of illness by using methods related to the five senses: taste (herbs) smell (aromatherapy), touch (oil massages), sound (mantras) and sight (color therapy). In addition, it promotes a healthy balance of five natural elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. Dr. Scott Gerson writes in his book Ayurveda: The Ancient Indian Healing Art that “All matter is composed of the five elements, which are the
building blocks of existence, but only living matter has the three doshas, the three forces which govern all processes. The term dosha means ‘that which darkens or causes things to decay,’ reflecting the fact that, when out of balance, the doshas are causative forces in the disease process.”
While I no longer practice Ayurveda medicine, like many of my ancient ancestors, I adapted Ayurveda healing strategies in Ki treatments and training at our Harlem Ki Energy Center. For further information or to make an appointment to visit the Ki Energy Center call 646 329-6727.

arigold, (aka Calendula), is used to reduce inflammation and promote wound healing. It is used to treat a variety of skin diseases and has been effective in treatment of skin ulcerations, eczema, and juvenile acne, where improvement was seen in as little as three-to-four days of treatment. Compresses of calendula blossoms are helpful for varicose veins. Calendula is one of several herbs used traditionally to treat conjunctivitis and other eye inflammations as it helps to reduce the swelling of eye infections. Years ago my cat had developed an ulcer-like
formation on his eyeball. I initially took him to the Vet, whose only response was surgery. I treated him myself with an herbal eyewash three times a day, containing marigold, and when I took him to a different Vet months later, his eye organs were completely intact and he had his full vision. An infusion is good for digestion and relieves colitis and symptoms of menopause. As an anti-fungal agent, marigold can be used to treat athlete’s foot, ringworm, and candida. Calendula also possesses anti-septic and anti-inflammatory effects due to its flavonoid content. In mouthwashes and gargles,
calendula soothes sore throat or mouth tissue; in solutions, it has been uses to treat hemorrhoids. It is also used as an anti-spasmodic to relieve menstrual cramps. Hear me when I say, for the love of all things dipped in chocolate – back down, withdraw, and extract yourself from this situation. If just for this one time, sit on your

he beginning of January has taken us past the New Year’s celebrations and the resolutions we make for the new year. Now it’s time to bring some sober thoughts into our existence. The celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday is an opportunity for us to reflect on the life as well as the teachings of this great American icon. People wonder what Dr. King would say about this or that. The answers are clear. Rev. King would probably be disappointed at the high rates of crime in the Black communities around the country. He probably would be siding with the workers of America in their demand for a living wage. He certainly would have been

Bro. Bill De Fossett – host of The 3G Experience radio program, WHCR-90.3 FM (www.whcr.org) against the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and wherever else there is a threat of war. I believe that Dr. King would be doing the same thing now as he did back then. As we celebrate this great man of God we should reaffirm ourselves to the principles that he stood, lived, fought, and ultimately died for. You should go to a King celebration somewhere and just by your presence, indicate a continued level of support for him. Please stop walking with your ear-buds in and your eyes on the screen of your iPhone. The numbers of pedestrians struck by vehicles and bicycles so far this year are phenomenal. People are getting robbed of their cell phones.
Every day a phone is stolen. Please wake up and pay attention! To celebrate its 30th Anniversary, WHCR-90.3FM is asking 30 friends of each program host to send in a donation of at least $30.00. The 3G Experience is counting on its listeners and friends! (hint –hint). You can visit the website at www.whcr. org and make your donation. It may be sent directly to WHCR – 90.3 FM by mail, to 160 Convent Avenue, New York, NY 10031. You may also go to their secure website, www.whcr.org and follow the prompts and use your credit or debit card. When you do, make sure that you click on The 3G Experience
as your favorite gospel radio program. I would like to thank all of you who have sent in your donations in support of The 3G Experience. Our worldwide reach has been extended via the internet. We are in contact with folks from around the world. It is a blessing to share the love of God and The 3G Experience in far off places like Australia, Morocco, Cyprus and of course across the country. Follow Bro. Bill on Facebook or on the air at WHCR.90.3 FM or www. whcr.org. Thursday morning from 6am- 10am.Other communication may be sent to PO Box 446, New York, NY 10039

“Best Friends Forever”
by Kimberla Lawson Roby
REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor
Y
ou’d do almost anything for your best friend. You’d take a bullet, take her in, or take her anywhere she needed to go. You keep her kids and her confidences. And, as in the new novel, “Best Friends Forever” by Kimberla Lawson Roby, she’d do the same for you. Probably. Celine Richardson was absolutely furious at her husband, Keith. It was bad enough that he came home at 5 a.m., but lying about where he’d been was the last straw. It was obvious that Keith was cheating on Celine – but what Celine couldn’t figure out was why. He claimed that she acted like she never had time for him, and Celine had to admit
that she’d been awfully busy for the last few months. Building her business took a lot of her time, but didn’t they have date nights? Sure, she’d been preoccupied now and then, but when they sent their 10-yearold daughter, Kassie, to spend the weekend with Celine’s best friend, Lauren, didn’t Celine and Keith spend alone-time together? They did, but that wasn’t good enough for him. He was cheating on Celine with some tramp, but he wouldn’t come out and admit it. And yet – that wasn’t the worst thing in Celine’s life. Just a few days before Keith’s first lie, she found a lump in her breast and, after rounds of doctor visits and too many tests, her worst fears were
confirmed. It was malignant, but Keith was full of excuses why he couldn’t accompany her to the hospital and Celine knew instantly that she could never again rely on her husband for support. Still, she wasn’t alone. With the help of her best friend and her brother - and no thanks to her no-good, absent husband - she’d be just fine. But Keith wasn’t done, and neither was cancer. Celine’s recovery didn’t go well, and her soon-to-be-ex had a bombshell to share, one that she sensed wasn’t the whole story. And just when Celine thought she couldn’t take any more, Lauren spoke her mind… Friendship, as you know, is never one-sided. It’s a giveand-take, and that includes “Best Friends Forever.”
From the very first scene in which a delicious scandal erupts, author Kimberla Lawson Roby gives her fans a story that’s sordid and scary but also, in an odd way, spiritually uplifting. Roby’s Celine is a strong, God-loving woman who’s totally out of patience, but I enjoyed that she’s given a lifeline as well as two surprises, one right after the other. While that ultimately leads to what I felt was an abrupt ending that left me hanging, it also
gave me hope that we haven’t heard the last of these characters. And the takeaway? I liked it, and I think you will, too: readers get a great girlfriends novel that’s easy to read, super-quick to finish, and that can happily be passed around or recommended for a book group. If that sounds like a dream read for you, then get “Best Friends Forever.” It
could be a book you’ll do anything for. “Best Friends Forever” by Kimberla Lawson Roby c.2016, Grand Central Publishing $20.00 / $24.00 Canada 183 pages

Tips to Beat the Winter Blues (Statepoint) If you have been feeling down lately, you’re not alone. The mid-winter blues are a common phenomenon. When clinically diagnosed, it is formally referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The National Institutes of Health characterizes SAD as a type of depression that can leave those who suffer from it with less energy and
feelings of sadness and anxiety. While light therapy, talk therapy and medications are often prescribed to those diagnosed with SAD, there are also some lifestyle measures anyone can take to beat the blues. • Exercise regularly. Exercise is not only great for your physical health, it can also be beneficial to your mood, boosting endorphins and raising self-esteem.
• Make plans. When the weather outside is frightful, it may be tempting to spend every night curled up indoors. However, making a conscious effort to stay connected with friends and family can combat feelings of loneliness. • Take a vacation. Plan a vacation somewhere sunny and warm, to get a dose of summer fun during the long, cold winter.

52 CAN DO’S: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions for each week of the year “Whenever I feel the need to exercise, I lie down until it goes away.” - Paul Terry I have found that one of the best ways to motivate oneself towards positive change is to minimize the pain and maximize the payoff by building healthful habits around what you already love to do! Commercial exercise I call it “commercial exercise” because its exercise you do while “couch potting” in front of the television during
your favorite television shows. The average adult, between the ages 35-49 watches 33 hours, 40 minutes of television a week. That’s about 5 hours per day! (According to a local newspaper citing 2014 Nielson ratings). While this certainly seems like way too much television, for the purposes of this article – let’s explore the benefits of chair exercises during television commercials. Here’s the breakdown: An hour-long TV show contains about 15 minutes of commercials; a half-hour TV show about 8 minutes. That’s 23 minutes in total. Add one more comedy show, that’s a total of two hours of television and approximately 30 minutes of commercials. Hmmm…did you know that the American Heart Association recommends minimum
push your bottom up a couple of inches from the chair as though you are getting ready to stand up, but don’t –sit back down. You should feel tension in the backs of your arms (triceps). Repeat for 2 sets of 8-10 reps. Overhead press: Sit up straight, contract tummy. Bend your arms, so your elbows form a right angle, and your fingertips face up toward the ceiling. Raise your arms up straight toward the ceiling then back to original right angle position. Repeat at moderate-fast pace until you begin to fatigue. 3 sets of 12-15 reps. Knee up: Slide toward the edge of the chair, grip both sides of the chair and raise up your right knee toward the ceiling. Repeat the same on your left knee. Repeat alternating right and left knee at a steady pace until you feel the burn in your

Bronx Gentrification Conference
Fitzroy Christian – CASA tenant leader.
T
he Bronx Gentrification Conference on Jan 10, 2016, was a well-attended discussion on development and gentrification at the New Settlement School at 1501 Jerome Avenue. It began with a movie “A Decade of Fire” directed by Vivian Vazquez. At that time, tenant groups such as Banana Kelly, and Nos Quedamos were key to get-

ting residents to work together to end the destructive trend. The CASA (Community Action for Safe Apartments) Theater group put on a relevant skit. In it, a group of developers come in and see the potential to derive an income by rezoning the district and renting out apartments or selling condominiums. They offer
area residents the option of securing affordable housing, but the neighborhood standards of what is affordable are much lower than those of the developer. This sums up the two sides arguing in the Bronx and other areas of New York City that are faced with rezoning or up-zoning. The next movie was an in-depth look at the mostly immigrant workers of Je-
rome Avenue. They work in auto shops and supplies stores, as well as in groceries, restaurants, and as street food vendors. Even the local graffiti guy became a hired decorative artist and a part of the neighborhood commercial scene. The Bronx Documentary Center contributed to making this film. See www.bronxdoc.org. Finally, a panel was formed featuring filmmaker Vivian Vazquez, Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Commissioner Vicki Been, photographer Rhynna M. Santos, and CASA Tenant Leader Fitzroy Christian. Commissioner Been is looking toward redevelopment in the Bronx because there is a demand for more housing, and has
approved a $70 million anti-harassment fund to get legal help to tenants to prevent landlords from harassing them to get out of rent-controlled apartments. Mr. Fitzroy of CASA reiterated his theme from the skit that people in the neighborhoods need protection. The Bronx Coalition for a Community
by Howard Giske Vision has developed a plan for development for the Jerome Avenue corridor that would have safeguards in place to prevent displacement of residents, and protect some of the businesses in the area. For more information on CASA please see www.casapower.org or call 718-716-8000.
