ith these words Mayor de Blasio opened the roundtable with Community and Ethnic Media heldWednesday February 17 at City Hall with Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Nisha Agarwal, the new Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs.

“This Administration understands the need to broaden and deepen its reach across communities in the five boroughs in order to keep all New Yorkers informed and we can do that better with YOUR full participation. That is why we are going to do more in the area of advertising in your media.” added De Blasio.

The Mayor and Speaker announced a deeper engagement with community press through interviews and roundta-

bles, as well as new initiatives to better relate with citizens with limited English proficiency. Among these is the creation of Language Access Cabinets in key City agencies, with senior level communications staff that will focus on ensuring all New Yorkers are able to seek City services in their own language. Since 2014, this administration

has more than doubled its financial investment in language access, including funding for interpretation, translation and related equipment and increased it’s spending from $2,400,000 to more than $4,700,000 in 2015 and Plans to increase spending to more than $ 9 million in 2016. Commissioner Agarwal also announced that by calling

311 and saying “language access” in the language that they speak, citizens will be able to log a complaint if they did not have access to interpretation when seeking key city services. In 2015, 311 handled 500,000 calls for IDNYC, 41% of which were in a language other than English.

The Mayor also announced the creation of a new ethnic and community media directory with the names and contact information of ethnic and community media serving a broad and diverse readership that will be used by City Agency communications staff, the City Council, and Borough Presidents’ staff to share op-eds, press releases and other information. The directory will also allow City agencies to create more focused ad campaigns for target de-

mographics. To this end the City has trained 75 Agency Directors of Communications to better communicate with these publications using the directory, and additional methods and tools Lastly, the Mayor announced three new seats in City Hall’s press rooms available for ethnic and community media.

The Mayor thanked members of the media for their continued work keeping New York City’s diverse population informed, and the City Council for working with the City in addressing the needs of all New Yorkers.

Some interesting data Language Diversity: · One out of three New Yorkers is an immigrant. · New Yorkers speak over 200 languages. · Roughly a quarter of City residents, 1.8 million,

are limited English proficient.

Administration’s Ad Buy Spending: · Ad budget with ethnic and community media more than tripled since FY13 o 2013: under $400,000. o 2014: over $861,000. o 2015: more than $1.3 million. o 2016: Ad buy data for FY16 is expected to outpace previous years. · For the City’s IDNYC campaign, for example, $818, 000 was spent across ethnic media and ethnic and community radio. · Mayor de Blasio’s 2014 DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) campaign was the first mass marketing campaign ever in NYC history targeted at immigrants.

B.P. Brewer invites Manhattan youth to join Council of Young Leaders

M

anhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, earlier this month, opened applications for the Council of Young Leaders of Manhattan, a new body her office is forming to involve young people ages 14-18 in the work and decisions of city government.

“Young New Yorkers have the greatest stake in what government does -they will inherit our city,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “On subjects from urban planning to police-community relations,

it’s been my experience that our borough’s young people have ambitious, creative ideas. It’s been my pleasure to appoint a great group of teens to our Community Boards, and through the Council of Young Leaders, we will give even more of our borough’s young people the tools and access they need to speak to their government.”

The Council of Young Leaders’ formation follows Brewer’s extensive recruitment of teens to apply for and serve on Community Boards following the enactment of

state legislation allowing the appointment of two 16- to 17-year old members per Community Board. In the new law’s first year in effect, Brewer appointed six Community Board members aged 16-17.

Membership on the Council is open to all young people ages 1418 residing, studying, or working in the borough of Manhattan. Applications will be accepted online until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4.

ontroversy is still swirling around Beyonce’s performance at the Super bowl, dressed in all Black sporting Black berets akin to the Black Panthers, giving the Black Power salute, giving praise to Malcolm X with the formation of an “X” on the field by her and her crew. This coming on the heels of releasing her new video “Formation” which expresses concern for Black

lives and Black pride, praising of her southern roots while rebuffing the police and their killing of Black folks. I say, great marketing; however, she is making a statement loud and clear as well. Beyonce and Jay-Z have huge platforms and are utilizing them to speak out as they should. Money can’t buy you love as sure as it can’t change the color of your skin.

The new millennials are engaged in social

politics of today, like Black folks were in the 60’s. As singer Marvin Gaye proclaimed in his album “What’s Going On” or like Olympic athletes John Carlos and Tommie Smith’s symbolic “Black Power” salute during the ’68 Olympics and as many others did in their eras.

Now there are slogans like “Take Back Our Country” and “Make America Great Again”.

he housing market is heating up. In an attempt to attract a larger portion of the market, several lenders are becoming very aggressive with new first time home buying mortgage products. This is a good thing for prospective first time low to moderate income buyers.

Now there will be more financial incentives available to assist you with the closing costs expenses. Many lenders have started to realize the need to develop a more attractive mortgage product in order to compete for a share of the market. Banks are creating portfolio products eliminating Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI), providing closing costs assistance and offering competitive interest rates.

In spite of these incentives the primary problem has not been resolved. This is the fair market values of homes in the Harlem community are continuing to soar. The asking prices for many of the properties today in Harlem remain unreachable for most low to moderate income buyers.

Most banks are still not able to approve a loan application with a debt to income ratio (DTI) greater than 43% of your monthly gross income. This ratio is the maximum amount you can afford to spend for housing plus your minimum monthly credit debt. If a lender exceeds this DTI they must justify their rationale for approving that loan amount.

“The position of Chief Diversity Officer is often called one of the most difficult and controversial jobs in Corporate America. And there are days when I would agree! The NYUL established

The New York Urban League was founded by a group of prominent New Yorkers concerned with the poor state of blacks migrating to New York City from the south. From its inception it provided employment and connections for migrating blacks bridging the adjustment from the agricultural/rural life to the industrial urban center.

Each decade following, “The League” provided critical services such as emergency aid for the unemployed during the Great Depression; formed the Committee for Interracial Voluntary Hospitals to provide care and work in local hospitals; negotiated the opening of employment for blacks in

the Champions of Diversity awards ceremony in 2004, inspired by corporate America’s outpouring of support for the 2003 U.S. Supreme Court decision that upheld the basic principles of affirmative action.

Riled by Glass Ceilings: Perseverance, Skill Credited for Historic Growth in Black Female Entrepreneurship

iven the pioneering success of Madam C. J. Walker, America’s first self-made black woman millionaire, people wanted to know how she got started in business ownership only decades after the end of slavery in America.

Her answer was short and simple: “I got my start by giving myself a start.”

As for her astronomical success as owner of an Indianapolis-based hair and skin care factory, Walker had yet another pithy saying: “Perseverance is my motto.”

More than a century later, these morsels of wisdom still work - at least according to economic experts and advocates who have observed the historic rise of black women entrepreneurs over the past 18 years. According to an American Express Open study released in 2015, there’s been a 322 percent growth in black female-owned businesses since 1997, making black women the fastest-growing entrepreneurial group in America.

The same self-start, perseverance and faith employed by Walker is still motivating Black

women in 2016, says Julianne Malveaux, an economist and former president of Bennett College for Women.

“African-American women have earned degrees, have moved up the ladder, and have found corporate America sometimes wanting and have found the mainstream difficult,” Malveaux says. “Therefore, the 322 percent increase is a function of people being very skilled and talented and not finding space for themselves in the traditional pipelines. And so they are going into creating their own.”

Margot Dorfman, CEO of the U.S. Women’s Chamber of Commerce, agrees. “Women of color, when you look at the statistics, are impacted more significantly by all of the negative factors that women face. It’s not surprising that they have chosen to invest in themselves,” Dorfman told Fortune magazine.

Yet, Malveaux points out, it is crucial to note that despite the growth of black women entrepreneurs due to their talent and tenacity, they are still a huge minority when compared to white women.

BlackEnterprise. com reports that women in general now own 30 percent of all businesses in the United States, accounting for some 9.4 million firms. African-American women control 14 percent of these companies, or an estimated 1.3 million businesses. In contrast, white women own 6.1 million, the lion’s share of the women-owned firms, according to the National Women’s Business Council.

Generally, black businesses - owned by men and women - still lag grossly behind those owned by whites, says Malveaux. “The issue is that African Americans are less likely to

have access to capital and African-American women are even less likely than that. In terms of access to capital, no African American has a level playing field.”

The Wall Street Journal reported in 2014 that black-owned businesses, which once received 8.2 percent of all loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, had dropped to only 2.3 percent.

From a black man’s perspective, it has been inspiring to observe the growth of entrepreneurship among determined black women, says Howard R. Jean, co-founder of the Black

Male Entrepreneurship Institute. He concludes the growth is spurred, in part, by black women increasingly realizing their worth.

“It comes to a point when women have stopped begging for a seat in the boardroom and began creating their own,” Jean says.

“Realizing their value on the open market and capitalizing on the certification pools that increase their opportunities for success in business, women are now in a position of influence in the business community.”

“Now, we gather to celebrate Black History Month, and from our earliest days, black history has been American history.We’re the slaves who quarried the stone to build this White House; the soldiers who fought for our nation’s independence, who fought to hold this union together, who fought for freedom of others around the world. We’re the scientists and inventors who helped unleash American innovation. We stand on the shoulders not only of the giants in this room, but also countless, nameless heroes who marched for equality and justice for all of us.

Down through the decades, African American culture has profoundly shaped American culture -- in music and art, literature and sports. I want to give a special acknowledgment to my lovely wife because just last week she hosted a performance of African American women and girls in dance. And we had luminaries like Debbie Allen and Judith Jamison working with the next generation of outstanding young black dancers. I understand it was a pretty special event. It was, apparently, an incredible event. I was not invited.

My dance moves did not make the cut.

So we are so proud to honor this rich heritage.

Nonprofit Ski Facility Helps 150 NY Youth Get Active this Winter

n Friday, February 19th 2016 an estimated 150 youth from the local YMCAs of NY which serve Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, along with chaperones from the organizations visited the National Winter Activity Center in Vernon, NJ for lessons in skiing, snowboarding, and much more.

The National Winter Activity Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the nation’s first dedicated winter sport facility created for youth only. The NWAC (otherwise known as “The Center”) exclusively serves youth 6 – 17 years old, from all economic backgrounds through partnerships with youth organizations. The Center’s mission is to improve the overall health

and fitness of our nation’s youth by providing access to winter sport activities, skill development, healthy meals and mentoring.

This past Friday’s events was one of seven-sessions as part of a program in which local youth are enrolled. They are instructed on a 1-to-8 ratio by PSIA and United States

Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) trained “coaches.” The children were fully equipped with gear and met with their coaches to receive on-snow training, with a snack and meal in between.

In total, participating children will experience about 40 hours of outdoor activity during a time of year when

they typically opt to stay indoors and become sedentary.

“National Winter Activ-

ity Center provides a one of a kind opportunity for youth who would typically not have the chance to experience winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding,” said Schone Malliet, Founder and CEO of the National Winter Sports Education Foundation (NWSEF). “Part of our goal is to help reverse the low retention rate in winter sports, while combating childhood obesity and inspiring a lifelong habit of regular exercise during the winter months.”

The NWAC hopes to impact several thousands of lives and inspire a new generation of skiers in children of all economic backgrounds this winter. The organization

has set benchmarks of introducing 4,200 children to snow sports over the next three years, retaining 50 percent as adaptors and encouraging 10 percent to eventually enter the world of competitive winter sports. Additionally, NWAC will also have competitions as part of the renovations including a complete development of the Competition Trail. U.S. Ski Team athletes will visit and ski with the kids, providing motivation and instruction.

Obama Administration Commits to School Diversity with "Stronger Together" Initiative

ddressing a crowded room of magnet school educators and supporters last week, Acting U.S. Secretary of Education John King explained his personal commitment to school diversity and the importance of reducing racial isolation in schools.

“I was a kid who benefited from intentional school diversity, and I’m a parent who prioritizes that in how I think about the education of my children,” he said, describing his experiences at two intentionally diverse schools in New York City (P.S. 276 in Canarsie and Mark Twain Junior High in Coney Island). “Teachers at those two schools saved my life,” he declared. “They are the reason I am standing

King’s children both attend diverse public schools in Montgomery County, MD, which, as he noted, has been working to implement intentional strategies to integrate both housing and education for decades. Now, he wants to encourage other communities to adopt that approach.

Thanks in large part to Secretary King, the Obama administration has now made a meaningful commitment to reducing racial and socioeconomic isolation in our nation’s schools, by proposing a $120 million request in the 2017 budget to fund the “Stronger Together” initiative. The new competitive funding program would offer planning and

implementation grants for voluntary, community-developed socioeconomic integration plans. The proposed 2017 budget also includes an increase in funding for the Magnet Schools Assistance program, another school integration program.

The Stronger Together program would supply four implementation grants (averaging $25 million each) for up to five years to support communities currently implementing strategies to improve racial and socioeconomic diversity. Stronger Together would also award 10 one-year planning grants (averaging $2 million each) to help support activities such as: fostering family and community engagement; assessing economic

stratification; evaluating the adequacy of transportation infrastructure; increasing capacity for data collection, etc.

Studies consistently show that school integration by race and socioeconomic status is strongly associated with a range of short and long term benefits for all racial groups. As a whole, however, our nation’s schools remain overwhelmingly isolated by race and class, even as our country becomes increasingly diverse. Such isolation is not benign; rather, it fuels a vicious cycle of structural educational inequity and, too, strips us of opportunities to build community across lines of difference.

shall’s observation that, “Unless our children begin to learn together, there is little hope that our people will ever learn to live together,” is now supported by a strong research base demonstrating the benefits of racial integration-not

just for student achievement, but also for reducing interracial prejudice and strengthening relations between racial groups. This research should encourage us all to take integration strategies more seriously.

Giving inmates the opportunity to earn college degrees can be a hard sell, though, because the average taxpayer is more concerned with educating their own children and grandchildren than with educating prison inmates, Zoukis says.

They want to see prisoners punished, not put on a track toward a degree, but that’s short-sighted, he says.

“Most of the public is unaware that educating

prisoners can have an impact – a positive one – on our economy and on the safety of our communities,” Zoukis says.

Here’s how: Prisoners who take classes while incarcerated have a 13 percent lower likelihood of committing another offense and ending up back behind bars, according to a Rand Corp. study in 2014 that reviewed years of data. Those prisoners also are more likely to become employed once they are released.

The Rand report says that for every $1 spent on correctional education, there was a $5 reduction in overall corrections spend-

ing.

Right now, though, a high school diploma or the GED equivalent is as far as prisoners can go in most prisons across the country, says Zoukis, who is incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution Petersburg in Virginia, a medium-security facility.

“It’s better than nothing, and will reduce recidivism, but a GED isn’t going to qualify someone for anything other than an entry-level job,” Zoukis says. “The further we can go beyond that, the higher the level of education we can bring into prisons, the greater the chances are that an ex-prisoner will

have an economically stable life and won’t be a repeat offender.”

Zoukis has worked on his own college degree from Adams State University in Colorado via correspondence. He expects to earn a bachelor’s degree by the end of 2016 and hopes to have an MBA by the time he is released from prison in 2018.

But Zoukis has faced roadblocks on the way to working toward a degree, and he believes changes need to happen to make the path smoother for those who will follow him.

any of you who read my articles may have noticed that they have been absent for the last two weeks. The reason is an unfortunate mishap; I had a strange fall that left both legs in a cast from thigh to ankle and four fractured toes on my right foot. Yesterday I was able to get into a wheel chair. Today I am writing my first article since my accident. Most of the doctors that have treated me have been amazed on the unique-

ness of my situation.

Some might view this to be a terrible experience I must confess those “why me” thoughts crossed my mind a few times.

My journey towards recovery started when I chose to use this experience as a vehicle to improve my mind, body and spirit. All healing begins internally, I realized this was an excellent opportunity to work on my self-healing techniques; abilities that we often take for granted.

The same mental thought that we use to raise our arms can also be used to influence the internal

workings of our body.

It makes no difference how good your external health care regiment may be, if your mental and spiritual healing abilities are not working your overall healing will be negatively affected.

I came up with the title of this article after reflecting on a conversation I had with a close friend Carrie Robinson. I was explaining to Carrie how moved I was with the many calls visits and well-wishers from friends, associates and relatives; Carrie’s response was that’s because you have made so

many positive deposits to others. After thinking about that conversation for a while I realized it came to me that there are many deposits and withdrawals in the bank of life.

Helping others can be viewed as a positive action or a deposit, thinking only of self at the expense of others can be viewed as a negative action or a withdrawal.

If you have more withdrawals than deposits your account will become bankrupt in the bank of life. I am grateful for all the well-wishers. I will be in rehab

Perfect Practice Makes Perfect!

sat unable to take my eyes off of the dazzling performance that was unfolding on the circus stage. Around me, the crowd was squealing and gasping then breaking into appreciative applause. Through the ooh’s and aah’s was the anticipation of yet another seemingly incredible feat that would defy gravity or at the very least seem to be extraordinary manipulations of the human body. Everyone, including me, left the circus’ big tent talking about yet another incred-

ible production. Yes, I sat there on the edge of my seat, like a child, my heart pounding, holding my breath, hands over my mouth, wide eyed, cheering and clapping wildly when the impossible feats were successfully accomplished. During the performance I began to look at the performers and it was the fluidity and gracefulness of each and every move that really captured my attention.

All of a sudden, the circus was more than its individual acts. It made me think about life.

Our bodies are exceptional machines! As individuals we are exceptional too. Everyone

that was watching the show had one (a body), but few could manage to attempt even one of the acrobatic feats! The graceful athleticism would not have been possible without the performer’s commitment to self control and discipline each and every day. The feats looked easy because the artist’s strength and power acquired over time made it all appear effortless and totally possible. Imagine practicing and committing each day of your life to fine tuning yourself!

Whatever your goals are you have to commit to practicing in order to develop the skills required to achieve them.

You don’t have to “fly

through the air with the greatest of ease!” No matter what it is you want to do, the basic requirements to achieve it, are self control and discipline. Why not discover your strength and realize the quiet deliberateness of inner power?

You will appear to have achieved your “feats” effortlessly with fluidity and grace too. Perfect practice makes perfect.

“Before I Forget”

ou can’t remember what you came into the room for.

That happens with disturbing frequency. Forgetting your glasses, losing your keys, it really bothers you because you’re not sure if it’s a normal part of aging or something else. And in the new book “Before I Forget”

by B. Smith & Dan Gasby with Michael Shnayerson, the worry isn’t yours alone.

For most of her life, B. Smith was a whirlwind of activity. She was a model, and had her own line of household goods, TV shows, and restaurants she co-owned with her husband, Dan Gasby. She was known for her sense of style and her ele-

gance.

And then, a few years ago, something uncharacteristic began to happen: the woman who was put together, inside and out, began to display emotional outbursts, use inappropriate language, and her fashion sense faltered. Her memory faded until it frightened the couple and they sought help.

Smith, as it turned out, had mild-stage Alzheimer’s.

A take-charge kind of guy, Gasby did his research.

“Some 5.2 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s,” he says; half a million people die of it every year. Perhaps due to higher rates of diabetes and heart disease, it hits the black

community the hardest: by age 85, “half of all African Americans have it.”

Knowing the facts can be empowering, but they don’t make dealing with the disease any easier. Smith lost things constantly; “hoarded” clothing, to Gasby’s irritation; and, though she was previously fastidious, ignored sloppiness. She shut family out physically and friends, emotionally. Longago recollections were sharp, but her short-term memory was all but lost.

When things got worse and Smith was inadvertently put in a dangerous situation, the family found expert advice, only to learn that there was little they could do. Alz-

heimer’s has no cure. It can barely be “managed.” They would just have to deal with the day-to-day challenges and learn to cope…

Of his wife, and their plans one day, author Dan Gasby says, “She sits…at the breakfast table, the love of my life, waiting quietly for me to tell her what to do.”

Is there a sentence more heartbreaking than that? I don’t think so, and you’d be likewise hard-pressed to find a book that will affect you more than “Before I Forget.”

Would you blame anyone if you saw a pity-party in this book? Probably not, but there’s no whining in Gasby’s words, nor will you find “poor me” in what B. Smith contributes (with

Michael Shnayerson). Instead, there’s resignation here; a we’ll-get-throughthis wrapped in a love story that gets more and more poignant as the story progresses. Gasby, who is fierce about Alzheimer’s education, also offers upto-date information and advice on what worked for him and Smith, and what doesn’t.

Without being a spoiler, there is no happy ending to this book, save but the sheer love that makes it soar. If you’re an Alzheimer’s caretaker, or are facing the disease yourself, you absolutely will want this memoir. “Be-

Davis, a blind black man born in 1896, was from a very poor family in South Carolina. At an early age he was playing guitar and in a leading band of the region.

In the late 1930s he became a Christian minister and he and his wife moved up to New York City. Davis struggled as a street and church performer while also giving guitar lessons.

In the 1950s he was discovered by music collector Alan Lomax and became known in the NYC music scene where he began to play at clubs like the Village Gate. Davis had a multi-

voice guitar picking technique that simulated played out chords on the piano.

Davis performed at the Newport (R.I.) Music Festival and received royalty checks for the use of his song “Sampson and Delilah” and others that were performed by Peter, Paul

BP ADAMS AND MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE PRESIDENT CREW JOIN FORCES TO LIFT UP THOUSANDS OF BROOKLYN STUDENTS THROUGH GROUNDBREAKING “PIPELINE” PROGRAM

M

edgar Evers College (MEC) President Dr. Rudy Crew and Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams announced a joint effort to expand the Brooklyn Pipeline at Medgar Evers College (Pipeline), an ambitious effort to help thousands of local students from disenfranchised communities in and around Central Brooklyn to succeed in college and careers. To date, the Pipeline has delivered enrichment and developmental learning opportunities to more than 1,000 public school students, taught hundreds of parents to better support their children’s education, and facilitated professional development training to teachers and school leaders in partnership with more than 80 schools across the borough.

As MEC resumes Pipeline programming for 2016, Borough President Adams announced he will double down on his financial and institutional commitment to provide resources in the coming fiscal year, which

will build on the Pipeline’s success to ensure that students and families in the program receive comprehensive academic support from kindergarten through college. Over the past two years, Borough President Adams has allocated millions of dollars in capital funds to Pipeline schools.

“Medgar Evers is an oasis of hope in Central Brooklyn, where too many students in our backyard are living in the shadow of an economic boom,” said Dr. Crew. “Each year, vast numbers of students arrive on campus requiring years of remedial education. With the help of Brooklyn Borough President Adams, we are attacking that situation headon. We are building an ambitious pipeline that will help our most disadvantaged kids succeed in school, starting in kindergarten and continuing all the way past graduation.”

Dr. Crew, who served as New York City Schools Chancellor from 1995 – 2000, said that shortly after arriving at his post as MEC president in 2013,

he was alarmed that nearly 86 percent of MEC freshmen were receiving one to two years of remedial education each year. The developmental coursework they needed was consuming limited financial aid and delaying their ability to earn a degree.

With the encouragement of Borough President Adams, Crew devised what has become the Pipeline Program, a largescale endeavor offering remedial training to neighborhood K-12 students, teachers, and parents at MEC’s campus. Since the launch of Pipeline programming in summer 2014, the percentage of MEC freshmen required to take remedial coursework has decreased to fewer than 68 percent.

Borough President Adams supported the effort by pouring millions of dollars from his discretionary funds into Pipeline schools to build out STEM labs and other modern facilities. To support the Pipeline, Borough President Adams has allocated more than $3 million in cap-

“I am proud to oversee a true research and development administration, where we are not afraid to tackle big problems with outside-the-box pilot approaches that have game-changing potential,” said Borough President Adams. “Our partnership with Dr. Crew and Medgar Evers College has fostered a unique education solution to previously intractable challenges in Central Brooklyn and throughout the borough. Last year, I dedicated millions to schools in the Pipeline, and this year I intend to do even more as Brooklyn Borough Hall and the college formalize our partnership to improve outcomes for children and families that need wraparound educational sup-

port.”

An analysis conducted by MEC of English and math proficiency at participating Pipeline schools illustrates how the gap in basic skills between students in Central Brooklyn and the larger population of students in New York City starts well before college. In 2014, elementary school students at participating Pipeline schools were 8 – 10 percent less proficient in English and 12 – 14% less proficient than New York City students generally. This gap further widened in middle school, with students at participating Pipeline schools 10 – 11 percent less proficient in English and 13 – 17 percent less proficient in math.

The Pipeline consists of programming for four central stakeholders: school leaders, teachers, parents, and students.

Current Pipeline programming includes: Parent Academy, attended by local parents, occurs bi-weekly.

It features modules and experiences designed to help parents

support their children inside and outside the classroom. Lessons cover a range of topics, including applying for financial aid, decoding critical numeric learning indicators, and effectively helping a child who struggles with reading. More than 300 parents at participating Pipeline schools have attended one or more sessions with each lesson typically attracting between 30 and 40 parents.

Just last year, MEC’s college enrollment rose by five percent. MEC has hired 11 new faculty members in the past year, and launched a Global Lecture Series, bringing experts in science, journalism, and technology to MEC’s campus. In the coming year, MEC will continue working with school leaders, teachers, parents, and students at every level to ensure the Pipeline Program remains responsive to the needs of its participating schools, families and students.

rooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College continues its 201516 season with The Beauty of Ballet, a free lecture demonstration presented by the School of American Ballet (SAB), on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 2pm. This event is free, with no tickets or reservations required.

The 45-minute, family-friendly presentation will illustrate how students develop into accomplished classical ballet dancers, alternating examples

of advanced classroom training exercises with the performance of excerpts from notable ballets.

School of American Ballet faculty member Katrina Killian (a former New York City Ballet soloist) and advanced students from SAB will be featured in the enchanting and informative introduction to the art of classical ballet.

How do ballerinas dance on their toes? How do dancers spin and turn without getting dizzy?

How do male dancers jump so high? Those questions and more will be answered during the

demonstration, and favorite moments from ballets such as The Sleeping Beauty, George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™, and Swan Lake will be performed to live music. The Beauty of Ballet is recommended for ages 4 through adult.

The School of American Ballet, the official training academy of the New York City Ballet, was established in 1934 by legendary choreographer George Balanchine and philanthropist Lincoln Kirstein as the first and most essential step in their quest to create an American classical

ballet company. Over the past 82 years, the Lincoln Center-based school has enrolled some 17,000 students, with over 2,000 having become professional dancers at New York City Ballet and countless other companies around the U.S. and abroad. Today, SAB is the premier ballet academy in the United States, training more students who go on to become professional dancers than any other school. SAB’s former students fill the ranks of the New York City Ballet and over 65 U.S. and a dozen international ballet companies. SAB’s faculty is

led by Peter Martins, New York City Ballet’s Ballet Master in Chief, and includes a number of current and past New York City Ballet principal dancers, many of whom worked directly with Balanchine. New York-area children enrolled at SAB are featured annually in New York City Ballet’s beloved production of George Balanchine’sThe Nutcracker™ at Lincoln Center. The School’s advanced students come to train at SAB from around the United States and abroad and represent some of the most promising young talent in the U.S. Students

Borough President Katz Recaps Milestone, Visions for Queens at State of the Borough Address

orough President Melinda Katz shared some of the milestones reached term in office and outlined the priorities for the future of Queens in her second annual Ste Address, delivered this morning at Colden Auditorium on the campus of Queens College.

Building upon last year’s theme of “If It’s Good For Our Families, It’s Good For Queens,” this year highlighted the ways in which the borough’s diversity is “an asset not just for Qu Yorkers.” She cited

the “inherent opportunity - by both necessity and design - to meet c creativity, more perspectives, and more innovation.
