pon observing the current national political scene it is apparent that the concept of Emotional Intelligence needs to be brought to the forefront of the campaign. Never before in the history of America can I recall this low of a level of Emotional Intelligence in the arena of National Politics to become the most powerful leader in the free word.

It is a proven fact that our own intellect will only get us so far in this world, our ability to get along with others and express empathy with others is so important to have a cohesive planet. High emotional intelligence makes it

imperative to feel for others and at the same time regulate our own behaviors.

Today’s leaders must strengthen their thinking skills. It was once said that “Thinking is some of the Hardest Work”, and apparently we see this concept on a national scale in today’s politics.

It is never too late to acknowledge the fact the own intelligence will take us only so far; matter of fact we can get to a level of success where our character can’t sustain our success.

That is understandable. But what sometimes a great opportunity will come up and catch them completely off guard. They have not saved enough money or they need to improve their credit. As a result, they will miss out on a tremendous home buying opportunity.

This is an unfortunate situation that just happened to some potential buyers a few weeks ago. The apartment building was converted into a condo-

connecting with her heritage, her own rural North Carolina origins and her original music transpires the black American vernacular traditions she grew up with, singing spirituals and line-singing hymns with her family in their small country church. Her words though “trapped between the cracks of my own insanity..gathering the pieces” took us to another dimension, where modern frenetic life’s attempt to disrupt our interior peace, is defeated by love and faith. Her original songs generate from the tradition that connects sacred and secular, protest and passion, and merge with the influences from her travels that bring a universal resonance to her

deeply rooted American music.

Called a “post-modernist Bessie Smith” with “a voice that would sound equally at home on an opera stage or a disco 12-inch” (Village Voice), the composer and vocalist Imani Uzuri has collaborated with an eclectic array of artists including Herbie Hancock, John Legend, Vijay Iyer, and Robert Ashley. 7 Ways New Technology Can Improve How Students Learn

or the last decade, there have been great shifts in the ways students study and learn, as education companies have developed new digital learning platforms. Educators say that content is more engaging and interactive now, and the benefits of these changes have been far reaching.

Recently, the Association of American Publishers hosted webinars where educators discussed digital learning platforms. Here are a few of their insights about the way new technologies and course materials are improving higher education: 1. Increase student en-

Harlem Academy: Not A Charter School

W

hen people see the name Harlem Academy, they often assume it is one of the local charter schools. In fact, it is a private school for gifted children from Harlem, Washington Heights, and the Bronx.

With a focus on advanced and engaging instruction, contribution to community, and family partnership, the school’s mission is “to guide students to thrive at the highest academic levels, so they can one day make a mark on the world.”

Every family must make a tuition contribution, but it is set on a sliding scale to ensure that the school is affordable to all. Some families pay as little as $40 per month, while others with higher incomes pay more.

“Ultimately, making this program available to low-income

students is at the core of what we do,” says Admissions Director Jennifer Prince, “and applying families should know that no student is ever turned away for financial reasons.”

Harlem Academy is structured as a private school for many reasons. While charter schools are required by law to admit students using a lottery, Harlem Academy has competitive admissions to identify children with high potential.

Once students are selected, the program is designed to nurture their talents and support them in meeting their academic and personal goals.

Founded in 2004, Harlem Academy already has a strong track record of success. The vast majority of its graduates have earned full scholarships to top private high schools, including Chapin, Hotchkiss,

Lawrenceville, Peddie, Riverdale, and Spence.

The school sets high expectations for hard work, collaboration, and ongoing improvement. They offer an extended day program (7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) that includes electives and study hall. Classes are kept small with fewer than 20 students, so that teachers can connect with each student and run seminar style courses. Advisory is also an important part of each week, with students perpetually learning how to best live up to the school creed and pillars: initiative, integrity, compassion, and determination.

“But Harlem Academy is not just about hard work,” insists Head of School Vincent Dotoli. “It’s equally important to have fun and enjoy learning.

We act out the crazy plots of

Shakespeare’s plays. We study the brain with Columbia University neuroscientists. We engage with primary sources in history to understand what really happened. We play chess.

We sculpt. We knit. We explore New York City’s rich resources, and we travel outside

the city to experience forests, farms, and universities.”

Reflecting on her long search for a school that would challenge her son, one fifthgrade parent said, “I had my child in five schools before we found Harlem Academy. None of them were pushing my son

to grow the way this school does.”

Mistress of Ceremonies and Harlem Business Alliance board member Adrianne C. Smith opened the program and led an engaging evening with inspiring acceptance speeches from each honoree. The surprise of the evening came at the end of the program when Congressman Charles Rangel took the stage to award HBA Executive Director, Regina Smith with the Legends Award. As a parting courtesy from Congressman Rangel, HBA received an official Proclamation declaring March 29th as “Black Business Matters Day”.

At the close of the evening guests were treated to HBA client Mere Viola’s Sweet Delights dessert buffet of macaroons, red velvet mini cakes, blueberry bread pudding and more including a gift bag sponsored by Serengeti Tea. he Apollo Theater has been celebrating the life and legacy of the great Charlie Parker with numerous events during the last couple of weeks. Each one has been a great source of unexpected and precious insight into the history of music and the legacy of Jazz musicians!

Wednesday, March 30 Jonelle PROCOPE, Apollo President and CEO could not hide her enthusiasm when she officially announced “The induction of be-bop architect and Apollo legend Charlie “Yardbird” Parker into the Apollo Walk of Fame…which was first unveiled in 2010, and is an example of the Apollo’s role as cultural an-

chor for the Harlem and Upper Manhattan community. It is our way of publicly paying tribute to the Apollo’s Legends…whose legacies have forever altered the American entertainment landscape.

How to Avoid Going Too Far When You Whiten Your Teeth

H

ow your teeth look says a lot about you.

That’s why many people opt for teeth-whitening procedures at the dentist’s office or whitening strips that can be purchased for use at home.

They want a bright smile that can serve them well in a job interview, in meeting the opposite sex or just to impress the world in general.

But teeth whitening can also come with negatives.

For example, many people are choosing to ditch the strips, says Dr. Barry Bartusiak, who has lectured on

dentistry throughout the country and formerly was dentist to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“More recently, the concern has been, ‘Do my teeth look too white?’ Because that’s a dead giveaway that they’re unnaturally so,” he says. “Just as most people want hair coloring to look natural, folks also want their teeth to be a convincing shade of healthy white.”

So they are choosing natural ways to whiten their teeth, without drastic measures such as bleaching agents, which can strip the enamel that protects the sensitive core of

the tooth from erosion.

“One alternative is a natural toothpaste that uses activated charcoal to whiten teeth, such as Black Is White, (www. curaprox.com),” Bartusiak says. “Activated charcoal has been a recent trend in skin care – since it’s proven to cleanse impurities – and has proven itself to be highly effective in dental care.”

Options to consider in the effort to rid your teeth of yellowish stains and return to a natural, brighter smile include: • Strawberries and other fruit. Some foods can help whiten teeth. Strawberries, for

example, contain acids that help break down stains. Apples and other fruit can do the same. The downside of this approach, though, is that fruit contains sugar and those acids also can erode the enamel if left on the teeth too long, so it’s still important to rinse and brush your teeth after eating them.

• Baking soda. One time-honored option for a toothpaste substitute is baking soda.

Baking soda helps with whitening because it acts as a mild abrasive that can remove surface stains from teeth.

• Activated charcoal. It seems counter-

intuitive that something black like charcoal could whiten teeth, but it does, Bartusiak says.

Activated charcoal (a treated and purified form of the charcoal used on grills) can absorb the stains on teeth.

While some Americans have experimented with activated charcoal in a do-it-yourself way and reported their findings on the Internet, the Swiss company Curaprox has now introduced its Black Is White charcoal-activated toothpaste to the U.S. market.

“Having whiter teeth is important to a lot of people,” Bartusiak says. “But it’s also

important to achieve that goal in a way that’s safe for your dental health.”

Dr. Barry Bartusiak is a Fellow of The Academy of General Dentistry and five-time president of his local Dental Society. He was also a previous board member of the American Cancer Society and dentist to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dr. Bartusiak is a “Hometown Hero” on local media station in Pittsburgh, a published author in the dental field and a national spokesman for Curaprox (www. curaprox.com).

A

ll things happen for a reason is a well-known Taoist concept. Taoist master and author Wu Wei often writes about how what people call a coincidence is really a message from the mind of the universe. We should always try to learn from any mishap that we encounter.

Sometimes it takes a while to get the message; we often keep doing the same thing over and over again looking for a different outcome. By the time you read this article I will be discharged from a 40 plus stay at the Amsterdam rehab facility. The need

to slow down and live life in the Now; is a powerful message that I will embrace with new passion due to this experience.

As we grow older it is wise to keep in shape, my injuries would have been a lot more difficult to overcome if I was not in pretty good shape. If I was in better shape I am sure my injuries would not have been as bad. I will have about two months of rehab at home and in the gym; I will continue after my legs are back to normal. Tai Chi and Qigong are excellent exercises for the 40 plus generation. I plan to become more consistent with my Tai Chi after my rehab is over I have

already started my Qigong and Ki energy exercises and will continue after rehab. I got the message.

On April 30, Dr. Robert Woodbine will coordinate the 9th annual celebration of World Tai Chi and Qigong Day in Harlem. As in the past eight years that event will take place on the plaza of St. Nicholas Park located at 135th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue.

Tai Chi and Qigong practitioners from the Tri-State area will give free demonstrations for children, adults and seniors. This would be a great opportunity if you would like to be introduced to a wonderful way to keep in shape no matter your age.

A

h, life is funny.

Every once in a while it gives you a wake-up call, and when it does the alarm seems to go off even louder than usual.

Maybe it has happened to you lately or maybe it has been a while, but regardless; whenever it happens life manages to get your attention immediately. How do you react? There are, of course, many ways to respond. Some of us ignore it and continue along our merry way.

There are those of us who hear it and pull the covers back over our head and sleep through it. Or maybe you’re the type to swat at it hoping to stop the ring.

Could it be that you always decide instead to hit the snooze button?

How about those noble few who jump up immediately and rush to make changes? No matter where you fall in the mix, one thing is for sure . . . you have to make a decision to do one thing or another!

Now this is a bit abstract, so humor me . . . Doing nothing requires the tenacity to

ignore the call completely, because if you heard it once, surely you will be destined to hear it again. Making a decision to respond later means that you have but a short while before you hear it again. If you respond immediately, before thinking about what life is trying to tell you then you risk making a mistake. The truth is that whatever you decide to do there is risk involved. You have no way of knowing until you do something.

Confusing huh? Based on your own perspective there are reasons to hesitate or not. So what to do?

We have a tendency to think that we have plenty of time to do what we want with our lives. As each day passes, there are things like work and family that tend to consume all of our time and it’s easy to put things off.

Tomorrow’s another day, right? Wrong. You never know what tomorrow will bring, but wouldn’t it be nice to “get a jump on” what you might want it to bring? I think that life’s wake-up calls are subliminal messages to encourage us to shake things up a bit. It is a signal to expand our possibilities in order to live a fuller life. There

are obviously drawbacks and benefits to any response whether it is good, bad or indifferent; the choice is yours alone.

As tempting as it is to say that anyone has the right answer, you hold the key to the adventure called life. Only the possibilities are endless, a lifetime isn’t; why wait?

Think about it. See you next week.

ou’ve heard the stories.

Great-Grandpa made hooch in the basement during Prohibition.

Grandma was arrested for protesting back in the ‘60s. Your great-grandma once chased a man off with a gun.

Scandalous then, maybe, but quaint family stories now. You cherish those rebel-rousing ancestors of yours – but in “My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me” by Jennifer Teege and Nikola Sellmair, some tales may lie buried.

At thirty-eight years old, Jennifer Teege had everything she wanted: a degree, success, a hus-

band, two healthy sons, and a bright future.

And then, while idly browsing in a nearby library, she says, “I found the book.”

Photos inside it seemed familiar – then recognizable.

They were pictures of her birth mother and the grandmother Teege loved. And between the pictures was a story that was “the key to my family history, to my life”: the mother who gave Teege up for adoption was the child of one of Germany’s most notorious Nazis.

The grandmother who cared for Teege as a child was the mistress of Amon Goeth, commandant of Plaszów concentration camp.

Did her adoptive parents know the truth?

Teege had contact with her mother until she was 7 years old and she knew her father was Nigerian; why didn’t anyone say anything about the bigger secret of their lives? And how could Teege ever reconcile the gentle grandma she loved with the woman who surely knew what was going on at the camp, but who chose to ignore it in favor of a life of comfort?

Though it felt like picking at a painful scab, Teege needed to know everything about her grandfather, a man she understood would have been outraged at her very existence.

She toured his home near

Plaszów, and visited sites of former concentration camps. She looked hard at old photos, and contacted her birth parents to find closure.

“I want to walk upright, to live a normal life,” she says. “There is no such thing as inherited guilt.

Everybody has the right to their own life story.”

ike every year in March, women Members of Parliaments, Ministers and dignitaries as well as NGO and Civil society representatives from all over the world gather at the UNITED NATIONS to discuss and promote gender equality issues.

“This session of the CSW marks the beginning of the count down to 2030 to the future we want, in which no one is left behind. A future in which there is substantive gender equality…… As we acknowledge progress made, especially in the last 20 years, we also note that for many women and girls at risk, that change is not happening fast enough. For example, it is forecast that it will take 50 years to achieve parity in political participation,

and 118 years for true pay equality between women and men at the current pace of change. To break these trajectories and achieve Planet 50-50 by 2030 will take dramatic steps and the adoption of business un-usual by all of us…This session should benefit from the historic efforts and experience of millions of women all over the world that have brought us here, and from the contribution of many Member States.It will also benefit from the force and inspiration of younger generations who are weighing in on this agenda with a clear eye to the future they will inhabit” said UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka at the opening of the 60th session of the Commission on the Status

The CSW is a global policy-making body established 1946 with a resolution by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Its mandate is to prepare recommendations on promoting women’s rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields dedicated exclusively to promoting gender equality and the em-

powerment of women as well as evaluate progress in the implementation of the agreed conclusions (2013) on ‘The elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls’. The Commission also discussed its multi-year program of work. The nineday session includes a ministerial segment with round tables and other high level interactive di-

alogues, a general discussion, as well as interactive dialogues and panel discussions. Stakeholders organized many side events to draw attention to critical aspects of the work on gender equality.

Usually held for ten days in March, the session provides an opportunity to review progress towards gender equality and the empowerment of women, identify challenges, set global standards and norms and formulate policies to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide. further the cause of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

hen was the last time you went to a circus and was really shocked by what you saw? When was the last time you felt your heart pound and found yourself yelling to friends—What was that? Well you will be doing that when you go to see UniverSoul Circus, now in its 23rd year and current-

fantastic! Then, of course there’s the Soul Train Line where audience members compete—shaking their groove things. This is a show that showcases the audience in ways that no other circus does.

And then there are the acts, which are multi-cultural and international.

There are Olate Dogs from Chile, Ethiopian Pole climbers; Colombian aerialist, Chinese Bicyclists, of course the beloved Trinidadian and Tobago born dancers, limbo artists and stiltwalkers. There are also beautifully tattooed, muscular, toned Russian Bar performers from Cuba. This year there is a very incredible act in the circus which I’ve never seen done in this way before and I won’t say more than that. The thrills and fright that you will feel as you watch it is worth the admission price alone. The act is out of California. But,

CAN DO TIP Week #20: Keep it Moving! Part II

52 CAN DO’S: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions for each week of the year “Ooh-oo child, things are gonna get easier” – Five Stairsteps,1970 Over the past couple of decades scientists have increasingly correlated exercise with reductions in stress, anxiety and depression and boosts in mood, self-esteem and even brain power!

Below is my “Thank Heaven it’s only 7” minute workouts!

Here’s how it works: (Round 1) Do each exercise for 60 seconds with 20 seconds of jumping jacks or running in place after each. Begin

(Round 2). Do each exercise for 45 sec. with 15 seconds of jumping jacks. STRETCH AND REST, you’re done –for now! Repeat entire sequence 2 – 3 times per day.

Wall squats (“wall sits”) Benefits: Wall squats are excellent for strengthening the upper thigh muscles and core (your body’s center of gravity). Instructions: Stand with your back against a wall, feet hip-distance apart.

Place your feet at a comfortable distance away from the edge of the wall (about 1 – 2 feet).

Extend your arms forward as you bend your knees to slide your back down the wall until your legs are at a right angle (90 degrees), upper thighs parallel to the floor. Contract (squeeze) your abdominal muscles in toward your lower back.

Your knees should

be directly over your ankle joints. Careful that your knees do not extend over or behind your toes, which means you might have to adjust your foot distance away from or back toward the wall.

Want to strengthen your chest muscles, shoulders and arms without placing stress

on your back? Try wall push-ups!

Stand about 2 – 3 feet away from a bare wall. (Hint: the further you are away from the wall, the more intense this exercise).

Place your hands firmly on the wall, about shoulder width apart.

Raise up on the balls

Kick-Butt Arm Press I love this exercise not only because it works your hamstrings like nobody’s business but has full body cardio-strength components making it an ideal stress buster.

Extend your arms out to both sides and bend your elbows so that your palms are fac-

ing out; make a fist.

Slowly kick your left heel back toward your butt.

As you place your left foot back down on the floor, press your arms closed so that your elbows and forearms are touching (or as close to touching as is possible for you).

Now kick the right heel back toward your butt as you open your arms. Press your arms closed as you lower your right foot down.

Keep alternating and speed up butt kicks as you press your arms open and closed.

The Museum is planning a series of public programs that will explore topics relating to AIDS in collaboration with Visual AIDS, BronxWorks, New York African Film Festival, and other organizations. The Museum has also organized an Advisory Committee of artists, leaders in the Bronx, community organizers, and individuals involved with HIV/AIDS issues to work with the Museum on events, outreach, and programming. The Committee is chaired by artist, archivist, and activist Sur Rodney (Sur).

“This exhibition traces for the first time how cultural expression has been influenced

by HIV/AIDS, exploring how artists have grappled with the devastation of AIDS from the beginning of the outbreak in the 1980s, to its insidious presence today,” said Holly Block, Executive Director of The Bronx Museum of the Arts. “These artists give voice to perspectives that are too often suppressed, and the exhibition reveals how they have changed both the history of art in America and the response to this disease.”

Bronx Museum Director of Curatorial and Education Programs, Sergio Bessa, added, “The AIDS crisis has particular resonance in our region and in the Bronx, and we continue to feel the impact of HIV/AIDS. Through our presentation of this exhibition and a series of community engagement programs, we will promote dialog with our community on a topic that has been stigmatized for decades.”

UD Regional Administrator Holly Leicht to Moderate Panel of City Officials, Housing Developers, and Community Organizations Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr invites the public to an upcoming workshop designed to help Bronx residents successfully apply for affordable housing. The event will feature a panel discussion moderated by HUD Regional Administrator Holly Leicht, who oversees federal housing programs throughout New York and New Jersey.

Titled “Successfully Applying for Affordable Housing,” the event will take place on Wednesday April 13, 2016, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, 1040 Grand Concourse, Bronx NY. “Affordable housing and its role in the future of our

borough and our city has been the topic of discussion across the city for years. We have seen considerable new development in our borough, and my office is working to make sure that this new development works for everyone. I invite all Bronxites interested in applying for a new apartment to come to this workshop, hear from our speakers and learn more about this process,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “Finding affordable housing in New York City is a challenge under any circumstances, but it’s incumbent upon government at all levels to ensure that those most in need are aware of the resources that are available and understand how they can access those resources,” said Holly Leicht, HUD Regional Administrator for New York and New

Jersey. “HUD welcomes this opportunity to join Borough President Diaz, Jr. and many housing organizations to get the word out about how to navigate the process of identifying and applying for subsidized housing.”

In addition to remarks from Borough President Diaz and Regional Director Leicht, attendees will hear from speakers representing New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the New York City Housing Development Corporation, Phipps Houses, Bronx Pro Real Estate Management and the Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation. The event will also feature resource tables with one-on-one attention and materials related to housing matters and other services.

his summer The Bronx Museum of the Arts will present Art AIDS America, the first exhibition to examine the deep and ongoing influence of the AIDS crisis on American art and culture. The exhibition will feature more than 125 works in a wide range of media dating from 1981 to the present day, by artists including Félix González-Torres, Derek Jackson, Kia Labeija, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Martin Wong.

The exhibition, on view from July 13 through September 25, is organized by the Tacoma Art Museum in partnership with The Bronx Museum of the Arts.

For this presentation, additional works from The Bronx Museum permanent collection will broaden the offering of artistic responses to the AIDS crisis by artists particularly connected to the Bronx, such as Willie Cole, Glenn Ligon, Whitfield Lovell, and others.

n Saturday, March 26, the U.S. Wall Ball Association partnered with The City University of New York (CUNY) for its annual Prep For Success Handball Tournament at Dyker Beach Park Anthony Mosomillo Courts at Bay 8th Street and Cropsey Ave. in Brooklyn. The event featured more than 300 men and women, 21 years of age and younger, competing in Doubles Handball Tournaments. In the 1950s and ‘60s, African Americans in the United States listened to

various styles of music, including jump blues, R&B and doo-wop. Puerto Ricans in New York City shared these tastes, but they also listened to genres like mambo or cha-cha-chá and

bossa nova. There was a mixing of Puerto Ricans, Cubans, African Americans and others in clubs, whose bands tried to find common musical ground. Boogaloo was a result of this search, a marriage of many styles including Cuban son montuno, guaguancó, guajira, guaracha, mambo, and American R&B and soul.

With lyrics sung in both English and Spanish, this highly danceable and distinctly urban form of music reflected the amazing multicultural fabric of New York City.

QUEENS BOROUGH PRESIDENT KATZ ALLOCATES $1 MILLION TO BUILD NEW GYM AND FITNESS SPACE FOR AUTISTIC KIDS Critical Funding to Expand Facility and Programs in Queens

n recognition of World Autism Awareness Day (April 2), Borough President Melinda Katz today announced a $1 million allocation of her Fiscal Year 2017 discretionary capital funds toward the construction of a new, 3,800 squarefoot “Center for Physical Achievement” gymnasium and fitness space at the New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC) center in Howard Beach.

Children diagnosed with autism and other related disorders often have a difficult time socializing in an or-

ganized play environment.

Experts, however, say that recreational programs supervised by counselors using appropriate techniques can be very helpful in assisting children to develop, live healthy lifestyles and maximize potential.

The allocation will help NYFAC complete its $2 million project to build the new addition, which will include specialized exercise equipment modified for people with special needs.

The new space will also allow an expanded menu of recreational services and programs, including basketball, volleyball, tennis,

Today’s funding announcement comes one day before the 2016 World Autism Awareness Day, which is celebrated annually on April 2 in accordance with a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Autism organizations around the world mark the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events.

orough President Melinda Katz’s Hurricane Relief Task Force today reviewed the progress of the work thus far in Queens by the City’s “NYC Build it Back” Program, which is dedicated to assisting homeowners, landlords and tenants in the five boroughs whose homes and properties were damaged by Hurricane Sandy of October 2012. Over 60 percent of Queens homeowners in the Build it Back program have been served thus far, according to the Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations (HRO), with construction completed on hundreds of more homes in the past year.

“The Task Force –

including HRO and Build it Back – has done a steady job in conducting comprehensive outreach to Sandy-affected communities toward the rebuilding and resiliency efforts,” Borough President KATZ said. “A considerable amount of progress has taken place since Superstorm Sandy, the bulk of which since 2014 under the de Blasio administration. Much work still remains, however, and the Task Force continues to work together in close coordination with full community input. The city agencies on the Task Force have assured there will be no rest until all remaining items in the pipeline are complete.”

Queens has the largest population of Build it Back

Of the 2,389 Queens homeowners, 2,717 selected construction options through Build it Back; construction on 655 homes (24 percent) is now complete, up by 433 since May 2015 when Borough President Katz ap-

proved the amendment to the “Citywide Flood Resilience Text Amendment”, lifting the regulatory barriers that had previously burdened entire neighborhoods and prevented homes from fully rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy..

Of the 1,181 Queens homeowners (2,043 citywide) who selected the option to both repair and elevate their homes to comply with flood elevation standards, 28 have been completed to-date. Reimbursement checks have been issued to 2,254 Queens homeowners totaling $49.8 million (of the 5,555 totaling $109.5 million citywide) to cover the costs incurred in repairing their homes themselves.
