The conference was a national forum and discussion about promoting and advancing women in the construction industry.

DDC Commissioner, Feniosky Peña-Mora, accepted the Building Innovation Award, presented by the Women Construction Owners & Executives group, for the agency’s commitment to creating opportunities for Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (M/WBE).

“Changing the path your life is on takes guts, belief, audacity, self-confidence, and a willingness to do so.”

He says a few ways to accomplish that include: • Don’t compare yourself to others.

Many people look to someone who is successful and gauge how

they measure up to that person. But comparing yourself to others can lead to frustration, anger and disappointment – the opposite of harmony. Instead, be your own measuring stick.

Work today to be better than you were yesterday, and vow to become even better tomorrow.

• Avoid the “I can’t” attitude. People come up with lots of reasons to avoid taking risks and making changes.

“I can’t do this.” “I don’t know enough.”

“It’s too hard.” “I’m too old.” “I’m not experienced enough.” If such thoughts rule your decisions, fear wins out before the game even gets started. Ignore those doubts and concentrate on the reasons why you can accomplish your goals.

PROTECTING THE RIGHT TO VOTE: DEMOCRACY AWAKENING

hen we think about the right to vote, it is and should be understood to be a civic sacrament in the temple of democracy. However, this presidential election will be the first in 50 years without the full protection of the Voting Rights Act. In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was enacted with the blood, sweat and tears of Americans from all across the country. But 50 years later, we’re still dealing with a multi-hued, multi-racial, multi-ethnic form of bias and discrimination at the ballot box.

To combat this assault on the right to vote, the NAACP has come together with more than 260 organizations – representing the labor, peace, environmental, student, racial justice, civil rights and money in politics reform movements – to stage a mass convergence this month on Washington, D.C. and call for democracy reforms.

April 16-18, thousands of activists mobilized in the nation’s capital for Democracy Awakening, a three-day event featuring a rally, march, teachins, lobbying and civil disobedience. Democracy Awakening plans to fight back against business as usual in Washington, D.C., and demand a democracy

that works for everyone. This means restoration of full voting rights, breaking the stranglehold corporations and the wealthy have on elections, and demand Congress hold hearings and vote to fill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy.

People all across the country, African-Americans, Latinos, students, and senior citizens feel as though the civic sacrament of the right to vote is being threatened. As a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s misguided Shelby County decision in 2013, which invalidated Section 4(b) of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, millions of Americans are now denied the strong protection of their right to vote.

Since then, we have seen state legislature after state legislature engage in a Machiavellian frenzy of voter disenfranchisement.

More than 30 states have imposed voter ID laws, which on their face seem innocuous.

But, when we keep in mind which American voters don’t possess these ID’s, we have reason to be alarmed.

Consider the state of Texas.

Because of voter ID laws, it is estimated that between 500,000 to 700,000 eligible citizens do not possess the prerequisite I.D. – disproportionately affect-

ing low-income citizens, African-Americans, and Latinos.

We know that voter ID laws also disproportionately disenfranchise the elderly. For example, 93-year-old Rosanell Eaton is legally challenging North Carolina’s voter ID law. She has voted for 70 years – but, because she was born at home, because her name does not match the name on the birth certificate or match the name on the voting roll, her franchise – notwithstanding the fact that she voted for 70 years – is at risk.

Students also are being put at risk. In Texas, a law essentially said, if you have an ID that allows you to carry a concealed weapon, it is deemed sufficient as civic proof of identification to vote. But a library card – an I.D. that allows you to carry a book of Shakespeare or of chemistry – is deemed an insufficient form of proof to vote.

Consider North Carolina, once the most progressive state in the country with respect to voting rights. But, in a few short years in the wake of Shelby, we saw a massive rollback in terms of that franchise. Among the measures that were curtailed or constrained: “pre-registration,” which allowed 17-year-olds who were about to turn 18 in time for

a new election to register early; Sunday voting and early voting.

Instead of curtailing and restraining the right to vote, we should be expanding it. It is, once again, the time to stand up and fight for our right to vote.

The NAACP is committed to breaking down barriers to the ballot box and maximizing the vote. We don’t argue or campaign for any candidate, for any party. But, we do campaign against any threat to make any citizen less of a citizen and less of a member of this democracy.

Together, we will demand fundamental reform that makes our democracy work and enables us to tackle our great challenges.

his home buying process is not for the faint of heart. Do not become intimated by the raising home values. Just understand exactly what it takes if you are going to successfully compete for a home in this market.

A profile of my successful home buyers can provide you with a key to what will be required from you: (1) they had adequate savings. This should not come as a surprise. Depending on what type of property you are buying, you will need approximately $20 - 25K or more for the down payment and closing costs. Have the personal discipline to eliminate wasteful spending. Stick to your budget. Make financial sacrifices. For example, con-

sider taking a two- or threeday vacation rather than two weeks.

They also had a stable and solid income. This is now extremely important because banks are only lending about 2 ½ - 3 ½ times your annual income. So the more money you make, the more you will be able to afford. However, for low to moderate income buyers, you may have to put an even larger amount down in some cases 30-40% of the purchase price!

(2) They had a solid credit history. In today’s market, very few lenders will offer you a mortgage with a weak credit score. Most banks are requiring a minimum score of 680 or higher. The higher your score,

n Saturday, April 2, 2016, lifestylist and media professional Harriette Cole, in partnership with Harlem Park to Park, hosted more than 200 entrepreneurs at the very first DREAMLEAPERS retreat, an allday event designed to help people access and activate their dreams. The inaugural event offered attendees the wisdom of more than 20 industry professionals who shared their expertise to help entrepreneurs “leap” into their greatness.

As the day-long retreat continued, attendees learned how to grow their businesses by listening to real- life stories during a panel entitled, “Keeping it Real.” The panelists included Sidra Smith (GatePass Entertainment), ShirleyAnn Robertson (Prudential) and Mike Warner (Egami Consulting Group).

These accomplished experts offered invaluable tools that people can use to manifest their dreams.

For the “Financing Your Dream” panel, Harriette picked seven financial professionals to share businessfinancing tips like acquiring loans and learning how to use other people’s money.

The One Mind

n Taoism and many other ancient philosophies the concept of one mind reflects the belief that we are all connected and that connection stems from a universal mind. It is also believed that humans are the only living creatures on earth that have difficulty making the one mind connection. While it is understood that we are on the top of the food chain, our ability to manifest thoughts into reality have been both a blessing and a curse. The desire to control and to acquire material things have taken most of us away from the

connection to the universal mind, some in a greater degree than others.

The desire by a few to keep the minds of the masses programed has kept the power of the mind a secret for centuries. Social programing has led many of us to believe that we need something outside of ourselves to have peace of mind. Love, wealth, and health are all in our power to manifest if we can find the faith in our ability to use our internal connection to the universal mind to manifest them into our reality.

As I grow older I realize that good health is the foundation to having a peaceful mind.

It was for this reason when Dr. Robert Woodbine introduced me to the one mind wellness concept of World Tai chi and Qi Gong Day (www.worldtaichiday. org) eight years ago, I was happy to work with him to coordinate the first Harlem celebration of this one mind concept. On the last Saturday in April thousands of people spanning more than 80 nations come together at 10am in their time zones to focus on a one mind of vision wellness and world peace.

This year on Saturday April 30 the ninth annual Harlem celebration of World Tai Chi and Qi Gong day will again take place starting at 10am in the plaza

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING: CONFIDENCE PLUS DISCIPLINE EQUALS POWER

have two words for you today; confidence and discipline. Both of which, when viewed spiritually, exude Godly principles.

Put this on the Holy Spirit, but discipline is an amazing thing. When applied to faith, be it natural or supernatural, the result is spiritual confidence. Spiritual confidence and discipline, without ego or arrogance, gives you an attitude of awareness and knowledge and dare I say power? The example I’d like to use is of those saints in the Upper Room, when the Holy Spirit came upon

them on the day of Pentecost and instilled everyone there with well, confidence and discipline. These people ultimately came to demonstrate a level of faith that was used via the power and grace of God to spread the Word of God all over the world. If you look at the before and after of this Pentecostal happening, you’ll begin to see my point. Prior to this, the faithful were huddled in secrecy, being faithful to the belief that what Jesus had told them, was indeed true.

That ‘Other” turned out to be the Holy Spirit, who imbued them with more of what they already had. Now their confidence in the truth of Jesus, coupled with their discipline

The question then becomes, in what is your confidence and discipline based?

Where do you get the necessary power to have your gifts fortified? Does your faith give you the strength to acquire the discipline necessary to know what you should be doing in the Lord’s name and then do it? I believe the result is the power to know that you can do anything through Christ Jesus, provided you were called to do it. I also believe scripture illustrates to us that without spiritually based discipline, it is practically impossible

to stand up to the trials and tribulations of life, but also impossible to withstand the temptations that seek to control our sometimes out of control behavior. The good news here is that wherever the Holy Spirit resides, change will occur, the right kind of change. Of those anointed in the Upper Room, many were faced with the opportunity to make their lives easier, if they would simply maintain the secrecy of their faith. Spiritually based faith and confidence gave each the power to boldly speak the truth. Remember Peter denied Christ three times without confidence.

Some would call that cowardice. After Pentecost, he was buoyed by confidence

and discipline. Power is the Word that comes to mind here.

You remember Paul at Ephesus? “When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.”

Acts 19:6. Here, these twelve men were already baptized but knew nothing of the Holy Spirit. After, we are told, they began to preach the gospel. Can’t you see the power gained and their growing confidence?

There is nothing restrictive about this kind of discipline.

It is in fact quite liberating.

They knew that they knew the same way we know that we know. It’s that change thing again. It’s called being set apart and not having to apologize or keep it a se-

cret. I believe it lets us stand up as Christians in the face of criticism, adversity and temptation. We may still fall, but we will not fail because our infrastructure has been fortified. Let me be clear. I believe that discipline coupled with confidence invites the Holy Spirit to take up permanent residence in your soul. It’s what I’m looking for and what I’m praying for, for me and for you.

And look out world when that happens. Like someone once said to me, I’m a different kind of soldier.

Believe it or not, so are we.

CAN DO TIP Week #21: Make Exercise Your Spiritual Coffee! (Part I)

Although the health benefits are debatable, there’s no doubt for many, drinking coffee every day is habitual.

Why not develop a healthier morning ritual?

Listed below are two of my favorite strength-building exercises from Bed Aerobics Fitness Flow® that I do upon waking in the morning before

my feet hit the floor which helps condition my body. The affirmations I recite during the exercise I call “pillow quotes”, help me condition my mind and spirit.

“Hip Flap” Pillow Quote: “In every instance, despite resistance, I’ll go the distance for transcendence!”

Muscles targeted: hips, glutes, and core Setup: Lie down on your left side, angle your body on the diagonal of the bed where your head is angled at the top corner of bed and your feet in the opposite corner at the bottom end of the bed. Prop your head up with your left hand but keep your right hand directly in front of you stabilized on the bed for balance and to prevent your upper body from shifting back and forth during the exercise.

Bend your right knee to fold over your bottom left leg. Rest your knee on the bed. Anchor your big toe and second toe on top of your left ankle bone and keep them there.

Lift your right knee up toward the ceiling as high as you can, then lower knee gently back to the bed. Continue to lift (flap) your knee up and down at a moderately fast pace for 8 repetitions.

(Complete 2 – 4 sets of 8-10 repetitions on each side).

For a more intense workout, press your toes behind your calf and lift.

“Temple” Pillow Quote: “Victory is simple when I first seek the temple!”

Muscles targeted: Shoulders, arms, upper back, and obliques Setup: For this exercise you can either sit upright on

the side of the bed, or kneel, whichever is most comfortable.

Raise both of your hands up to the ceiling as high as you are able, palms facing out.

Press the palms of your hands together above your

head while keeping your arms as straight as possible.

Lower your palms to the crown (top) of your head and raise them again, up and down for 8 repetitions.

(Complete 2 – 4 sets of 8-10 repetitions).

Important note: Relax and

breathe abundantly throughout these exercises. Resist the temptation to hike your shoulders up during the lift in the “Temple” as this will cause unnecessary tension that could limit your range of motion. As always, speak with your doctor before engaging in any new exercise activity, particularly if you suffer from high blood pressure or joint pain.

During Spring into Action, volunteers personally connected with almost 400 Brooklyn residents from underserved neighborhoods.

“We believe volunteers can help meet the pressing needs in Brooklyn, like job readiness, financial literacy and youth development.

Spring into Action is unique in that it’s the only major volunteer initiative focused on Brooklyn’s low-income communities,” said Kristina Reintamm, Director of Community Education and Engagement at BCS. “There are so many people here who want to get involved--we’re proud to be an organization that works to foster community collaboration.”

rooklyn Community Services (BCS) Fourth Annual Spring into Action, held March 20 to April 5, was packed with over 20 impactful and educational projects, which featured over 300 volunteers from companies and the community who spent approximately 600 hours making a difference in Brooklyn’s underserved neighborhoods.

At Spring into Action, volunteers were involved with interactive projects at 13 BCS program sites, which specialized in early learning for children, educational afterschool programs, youth development, adults with mental illness, women at a homeless shelter and adults with developmental disabilities. Highlights included an urban ecology outreach with 73 trees stewarded in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Coney Island’s Kaiser Park being cleaned up and the BCS Transitional Living Community (TLC) Urban Garden prepped for spring. There were education projects like youth ages 14-18 being mentored by local professionals and middle school students at two public schools learning about 10 different professions at Career Day events. Children ages 3-5 developed their reading literacy skills. Healthy lifestyles were promoted through adults with mental illness participating in free yoga and aerobics.

Low-income adults with mental illness received free tax preparations and youth had free financial literacy training.

Queens Borough Cabinet to review Data2go.nyc demo and local Foreclosure Prevention Program for Seniors

he Social Science Research Council’s Measure of America initiative will present a demonstration of DATA2GO.NYC to the Queens Borough Cabinet, chaired

DATA2GO.NYC is a free, easy-to-use online data tool that combines local, state and federal data about New York City into an interactive mapping tool, allowing users to compare and analyze all 59 community boards by 350 indicators including health, po-

The Cabinet will also hear a presentation from Jewish Association Serving the Aging’s (JASA’s) Legal Services for the Elderly in Queens (LSEQ) about the foreclosure prevention program through its Senior Initiative Project. Funded through the Center for New York City Neighborhoods, the program educates and assists senior homeowners in Queens who are threatened by financial, homeowner and consumer scams.

The presentation will be held at Queens Borough Hall, 120-55 Queens Boulevard in Kew Gardens on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 9:30 am.

The Queens Borough Cabinet is chaired by the Borough President under the New York City Charter and comprised of the District Managers of each Community Board in the Borough and representatives from city agencies. It focuses on city service delivery and agency responsiveness across the borough and hears presentations on these issues from City officials and others.
