With Just Days remaining to file tax returns, Congressman Charles Rangel Urges Eligible New Yorkers to use Free Tax Services from Food Bank for New York City

C

ongressman Charles Rangel (NY-13) is urging all eligible New York residents to use free tax assistance services provided by Food Bank For New York City and to save money and time during the final days of tax season, highlighting the IRS Free File program.

As noted by Congressman Rangel, the tax filing deadline for 2016 has been extended by days, allowing taxpayers until April 18, 2016 to complete and file their returns.

“The tax services offered at Food Bank For New York City, including Free File, make doing your taxes simple, fast and free,” said Congressman Rangel, who helped create the EITC

program in 1975. “They help working families keep money in their pockets and help claim credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit, one of our most important anti-poverty tools,” the Congressman said.

In general, people earning $62,000 or less – 70 percent of all taxpayers – are eligible to use namebrand tax preparation software products to prepare and securely file their tax return online at no cost.

The Free File program is a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and tax preparation software companies that provides millions of people access to brand name software so they can prepare and securely file

their taxes at no cost. The software uses a simple interview-style process to help people identify all the credits and deductions for which they are eligible.

Since its debut in 2003, over 40 million taxpayers have saved more than $1.3 billion in tax preparation costs through the IRS Free File program.

Each year, tens of thousands of taxpayers receive a smaller refund because they fail to claim all of their eligible credits and deductions, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable federal tax credit originally co-sponsored by Congressman Rangel. Estimates indicate up to 25 percent of people eligible for the Earned In-

come Tax Credit (EITC) fail to claim it and miss out on a refundable federal tax credit of up to $6,200 (certain states also have a similar EITC).

Food Bank For New York City, recognized by the IRS as one of the largest coordinators of civilian tax assistance in the country, offers the Free File program at 16 of its tax sites.

The majority of individuals and families reached are living in the city’s high Meal Gap neighborhoods.

The city’s official measure of food insecurity, the Meal Gap pinpoints where hunger lives on a local level, allowing Food Bank to geo-target its tax preparations sites to areas where working New Yorkers will

benefit from them the most.

“For 14 years, Food Bank For New York City has helped low and moderate-income New Yorkers across the five boroughs file their tax returns,” said Brady Koch, Chief Programs Officer, Food Bank For New York City. “We were one of the first community organizations to embrace Free File, by providing the skills and education New Yorkers need through experienced tax coaches. Together we help to empower New Yorkers to obtain the tax credits to which they are eligible without spending any of their own money to get their refund.”

t has come to my attention that many prospective first time buyers are under a terrible misconception. They believe that by attending the Home Buyer Education Workshop, they will automatically qualify for the Home First Down Payment Assistance program offered through New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

This program can provide a first time home buyer with 6% of the purchase price up to $15,000 that can be used for either down payment or closing costs. But you must meet all of eligibility requirements: (1) be a first time home buyer; (2) buy in New York City; (3) complete the home buying workshop; (4) meet the household size and income

guidelines; (5) use an authorized lender; and (6) the purchase price does not exceed the maximum limits.

The problem is most low to moderate income prospective buyers still earn an income too high to qualify for this grant program. They then get discouraged and decide to stop considering buying a home. They stop because of not having enough money saved to go forward with the process. Not being eligible for the grant should not stop you from becoming a homeowner.

You cannot allow anything to stop you from achieving your goal.

I will use synthetic hair braids to wrap a 30-foot street light pole in Marcus Garvey Park. I am making a total of 1,916 braids to mark the date Garvey settled in Harlem and will use Jamaican and African inspired colors to create a textural design that will wrap around the circumference of the pole and rise up to its top. The title of the installation is derived from the Marcus Garvey quote “Up, you mighty race, accomplish what you will.” My choice to use colorful hair braids as my material relates to Marcus Garvey’s Black Nationalist and Pan African ideologies of unity and self-determination and the African women entrepreneurs in Harlem who use their hair braiding

Head of Passes Is Poignant Theatre!

T

heatre can make you experience a part of life you wouldn’t normally be exposed to. It should entertain, enlighten and inspire. Theatre is supposed to make you ponder a situation. You are supposed to be captivated and then taken to a place and buy into a story and characters.

All that happens when you go to the Public Theatre production “Head of Passes.” This stunning drama by playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, with direction

by Tina Landau delivers a story that will capture your attention and keep it.

McCraney tells the story of a family in Louisiana, who live in Head of Passes, an area that is by the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. A classically

beautiful house is the home of Shelah, an ill woman who is the last family member living in the house. Her children are grown and include Aubrey, Spencer and her half-daughter Cookie.

The house is full of holes in the roof and when guests are invited for a party, the living room is full of buckets and pots to catch the falling water. Shelah has a heavy heart, as she tries to prepare herself to tell her children about her failing health. Aubrey has invited family and friends to her

mother’s home to celebrate her birthday, but it seems that heavy rain is keeping friends away. The only friend to come is Shelah’s best friend Mae. Creaker and his son Crier are hired for the party to wait on the guests, but instead of finding containers to put down on the floor of the living room to catch the incoming rain water. The plans for the party fall through, but that is the least of Shelah’s worries.

ence learns each person’s issues. Aubrey loves his mother and wants her to leave the old house. Spencer is the son who does everything wrong and Cookie is the step-daughter whose life is out of control and she has a deep, dark secret. This family has serious issues to deal with and their problem touch one’s heart.

McCraney’s story is based on the book of Job in the bible, so that kind of gives you a hint of what Shelah is about to go through, but you could never imagine to what

extent her misfortune is felt or the way that things aggressively occur. When people suddenly abruptly have their lives destroyed anyone who question God and wonder why, but the next step is do you curse him or look to understand his wisdom?

The fact that McCraney set the play in Louisiana truly makes one think of what the victims of Hurricane Katrina must have felt as their homes were flooded, loved ones perished and all their possessions were destroyed.

“Head of Passes” is poignant theatre.

I don’t want to share details about what happens to Shelah’s family, you need to experience it first-hand.

The high-stepping show was produced by T. Fraser Productions with sparkling commentary by noted designer/fashionista Beverly Olivacce who also introduced The Links at the top of the show.

McDonald’s USA recognizes some of these exceptional youth through its annual 365Black Community Choice Youth Award, returning for the third consecutive year. How to Build Authenic Character in Youth Sports "Not everyone deserves a trophy"

I

n fact, unearned rewards can be harmful, because artificially inflating a child’s self-esteem merely for participation in sport sends the wrong message, warns psychologist Jason Richardson.

“There are plenty of incarcerated felons with an inflated self-view and there are extremely successful people grappling with a more moderate self-concept, so self-esteem alone is not the measure by which we should prepare our children for greatness,” says Richardson, a PanAm Games gold medalist who is also known as

“Dr. JRich” among colleagues.

Richardson isn’t alone. Last year, Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker James Harrison returned two participation trophies given to his two sons, awarded not for a specific victory that they’d earned, but simply for being student-athletes.

Anyone can give and get a trophy, but the true value of youth sports is in the occasional tough lessons – and successes – children experience through hard work and merit, says Richardson, author of “It’s All BS! We’re All Wrong,

And You’re All Right!” (www.drjasonrichardson. com).

He offers practical tips parents can share with their kids.

• Stop saying “the problem is …” Fill in the blank. Too many people say the problem is with the coach, the school, the other kids, the equipment, the schedule – and so on. This kind of thinking implies failure because it immediately rules out your child’s goals. Instead, say things that rule in positive outcomes, such as, “I/We/ You can do this!”

• Make failure a teachable moment. Sports can

test a kid’s emotional fragility. They may want to give up with failure, but that’s a terrible lesson. If your child missed a free throw that would’ve won the team the game, encourage free-throw practice the next day. Better yet, ask them what they are going to do differently next time! Use a coach’s staple: remind your child that Michael Jordan was cut by his high school basketball team during his sophomore year. Parents can always reward persistence and effort.

• Don’t let your child’s ego run wild. The flipside of low self-esteem due to failure can

be cockiness with success. Children have far less experience keeping the ego in check, so if he/ she is the best athlete in school, they may become arrogant. Try to catch this early; people evolve at different rates. Temper their ego by showing examples of humility, respect and gratitude. Use examples of great athletes who have overcome slumps or adversity.

• Show them how to be a better student. It may seem odd that a star quarterback can memorize every detail of a complex playbook, but has trouble with class studies. If he’s having trouble with

chemistry, for example, place the playbook next to the textbook and show him the parallels of complexity. Don’t let him believe he’s “just a jock.”

How to Get Hired Right Out of College With The Right Internship

mproving economic conditions have finally caught up to millennials, providing them with a brighter job market, according to the United States Department of Labor.

But a recent Federal Reserve Bank of New York report says the devil is in the details. Not all new college graduates are doing equally well. The kind of degree they earned is an enormous factor in the job hunt.

“There’s no question that your field of study significantly alters your prospects, but even having chosen the right field is

no guarantee,” says Matt Stewart, an entrepreneur and co-founder of College Works Painting (www. collegeworks.com), an internship program that provides practical business experience for college students.

“How you approach your field, such as engagement at an internship, can boost your professional prospects immensely.”

Do you have Flat Feet and Consistently Experience Foot Pain?

H

ave you ever seen your footprints in the sand or on a wet surface, and noticed that your feet are flat – that you can see a complete impression of the bottoms of your feet with no arch in the middle of the inside of the foot? You probably have

flat feet (also called fallen arches).

In a normal foot, several tendons anchored in the foot and the lower leg pull in combination to form the arch. But about a quarter of all adults have little or no arch. Though children are born with flat feet, or flexible flat feet as they are known, usually an arch forms between the ages of three and five.

The lack of an arch can also be caused by some health conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, diabetes, and pregnan-

cy), broken bones, or damage to the tendons in your foot, causing a collapsed arch.

It’s a fairly common problem. But, if you have flat feet and consistently experience foot pain, if your feet or ankles are tired or achy, or if you often feel chronic discomfort in your hips, legs, lower back or knees, you should have your feet evaluated by a podiatrist. Why? Because your feet support your entire body, and flat feet can throw your skeleton out of its prop-

er alignment and cause joint problems as well.

The strain on your skeleton and joints caused by flat feet can cause the above symptoms, as well as bunions, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis (heel pain) and other foot issues.

Flat feet will not go away on their own. A podiatrist can analyze your foot structure and your gait (how you walk), and can recommend corrective and therapeutic measures, from custom insoles (orthotics) that will help align and sup-

port your foot, to medications to reduce inflammation, to exercises to strengthen the tendons in your feet, including the Achilles tendon. Surgical solutions are only recommended for severe cases.

Life is What You Make It

here is an old saying “You are who you think you are.” Like most old sayings, there is a visible and invisible truth to them. The invisible truth to the above statement is due to social programing. Most people do not know who they are; they often let social programing give them the illusion of who they think that they are. When you learn to understand who you really are and the abilities that were given to you at birth; you can become who and what you want to be.

In most cases a lack of

productivity in personal development is a lack of understanding of self. Many will blame other people or things on an unhappy or difficult life. This truth may be difficult to embrace but no one or thing can truly make your life happy or unhappy.

Life is truly what you make it. The foundation of happiness and sadness is internal.

Happiness and sadness are frequencies of mind energy. Sadness, anger, envy and hate are low frequencies of mind energy; and can be harmful to your health.

Happiness, hope, faith and love are high frequencies of mind energy; they are very important for good health.

Without good health it is dif-

ficult to enjoy the material world. Since high frequencies of mind energy are key factors in preserving good health, positive thoughts are important no matter whom you think you are.

Some might say if I am unhappy it is difficult to have positive thoughts. My thoughts would be as stated before: no one or situation can make you angry or unhappy; you make yourself angry or unhappy. It is easy to place the blame on someone or something else. We are programed to think a certain way. The next time you find yourself unhappy or angry try to deprogram yourself and change the frequency of your thought

from negative to positive.

The difficulty in doing this will give you an idea of how deep your social programing is.

You are what you think you are and you are special.

This does not mean that you are better than anyone else; it just means that you have the ability to change your life anytime you wish.

Thought manifestation is one of the special gifts that we often misuse. What we think about the most will manifest into our reality.

When you understand that you have all that you need to be happy right now, it can change your life. As the saying goes “when you understand that you don’t need

anything, you will be able to have everything”. Life is truly what you make it if you understand who you are. Don’t let the illusionary social programed-self that you think you are make your life unhappy. Find your real self and allow happiness and love to flow into your life.

Life with My Plant

F

or the last couple of weeks I have been lamenting about a change that is occurring in my life. Now I know that lamenting is a pretty strong word to use to describe my reaction to the change, but it is truthful nonetheless. It all started with a plant that was given to me when my daughter was born many years ago, the pink plastic “It’s a girl” sign is still in the vase. If you are surprised that a plant given to me that long ago is still living, don’t be. If by chance you are wondering why on

Earth I would still have it around, I have no explanation other than that I watered it and nurtured it all those years, and it survived.

So why write about a plant?

Because it shares a great number of similarities with the way I happen to live my life! We are all older, my daughter, myself and The Plant. We have all gone through life, experiencing it in our own way. The Plant has been a spectator in my life and I feel that we have a close and somewhat symbiotic relationship. Really . . . The Plant and I have been there for each other.

Recently The Plant has begun to change dramatically. Its leaves are no lon-

ger as full and lush, most of them have withered, yellowed and shriveled and died. No matter what I do, it will not revive. These changes to The Plant come at a time in my own life when my daughter is living her own life and needs less of, or from me. I wondered if The Plant realized that it was time for it to move on as well and was signaling me in its time honored way, to do the same. After all, I raised, nurtured and loved my daughter right into adulthood . . . and I am proud to have done so successfully.

I will admit that I have a habit of holding on to things, situations too long.

Holding on is an easy trap to fall into and it becomes

easier still, to get really comfortable with the status quo. But alas, life has other plans. Change will come. Nothing is forever.

The Plant has been with me throughout the many changes that have already occurred in my life, probably noting my reaction to the ride. Now it’s no longer amused with my inability to let go voluntarily and no longer tolerating my stubbornness. This is the end of the line. I will have to go forward without my plant as I knew it.

My daughter has a family of her own. Letting her go wasn’t easy, but I realize that her growth away from me is part of life’s cycle. In her growth lies an opportunity for me to continue. Just

like my plant, that part of my life cannot be revived; in its place are fond memories.

And The Plant . . . ?

Well, the other day, I noticed that a new shoot was pushing its way up through the soil. It is as if The Plant and I are somehow starting all over again as infants. I can’t wait for us to begin this new journey! Remember, don’t stunt your own growth by stubbornly clinging to the past and refusing to let go. Grow on . . . Think about it. See you next week.

“We Love You, Charlie Freeman”

nything’s worth a try.

Never done it before? Then give it a whirl, you have nothing to lose. You might actually like it.

You might grow to love it. And then again – as in the new book “We Love You, Charlie Freeman” by Kaitlyn Greenidge, the experiment might go horribly awry.

The shiny new car just didn’t seem right.

Nothing did, really. Leaving their home, moving to another state, having to make new friends, Charlotte Freeman hated it all. And this experiment her parents had gotten them into, well, no.

Her mother, Laurel, sure was excited about it, though.

Ever since she was young, Laurel had been fascinated

with sign language, and she taught both her daughters to sign as soon as they were old enough to understand the motions. But a chimpanzee? A chimp the Freemans would raise as a child, while they taught it sign language?

Charlotte couldn’t ever imagine spending the rest of her teenage years pretending that a chimpanzee was her brother. She was leery of the “doctor” who ran the program, and of the ancient woman who’d founded the whole thing. They were white; the Freemans were black and Charlotte suspected that race had something to do with why The Toneybee Institute had hired her mother, but it didn’t matter.

What mattered was that

Charlotte and her little sister seemed to be losing their mother’s love to a chimpanzee.

Nobody’d called Ellen Jericho by her real name in years.

They all called her by her Star of the Morning name, Nymphadora, which was a name that made her proud, and which was the name she’d given Dr. Gardner when they first met.

They made their acquaintance because he’d been bothering the town’s children with his obsessive sketching. Her Star sisters asked her to ask him to stop, which Nymphadora did – brokering a deal with him to sketch her instead, in poses that he chose.

She didn’t expect to fall in love with him, nor was she prepared to stumble upon the horrible reason why Gardner

CAN DO TIP Week #20: Keep ya’ head up as you keep it moving! Part III

Contract your biceps (make a muscle) as though you are showing off your biceps.

Hold contraction for 2 seconds then release back to starting position.

From starting position, contract your biceps, only this time bring your fists toward your chest which will also engage your triceps. Hold contraction for 2 seconds then release back to starting position. Repeat from starting position.

III Leg Lifts This exercise is excellent for strengthening the legs, knees, and core. Make sure to use a sturdy chair and grip the sides of it for balance.

Starting position: Sit in a chair, your back straight and tall, contract your abs. Extend your right leg forward.

Lift your right leg, raising it up and down for 20 seconds. Keep the leg straight and stiff, try not to allow your foot to touch the floor

in between lifts. Return to starting position.

Extend or widen your right leg straight out to the side (heel facing the floor), and then bring it back to the center. It’s as though you are opening your legs wide one leg at a time.

Repeat 20 seconds.

Finally, flex the hip to lift and rotate the knee forward as though

peddling on a bicycle.

It’s okay to lean back slightly but remember to keep the back tall, core muscles contracted. Repeat 20 seconds.

This is 1 set. Repeat sequence on the left leg for 2 sets.

he YM & YWHA of Washington Heights & Inwood’s Center for Adults Living Well is excited for the launch of a free Tai Chi for Arthritis class, funded by the Department for

Speaking of mood, this “Thank Heaven Its Only 7” minute workout routine should put you in a good one, especially since most of it can be completed at home while sitting in a chair!

Remember to breathe throughout this routine. (Round 1) Do exercises 1 and 2 for 60 seconds with 20 seconds of jumping jacks after each. Exercise 3 according to directions.

(Round 2). Repeat exercises 1 and 2 for 45 seconds with 15 seconds of jumping jacks.

STRETCH AND REST I Core Knee Up Sit on a sturdy chair in a tall position with your back straight, squeeze in your tummy (abs) and grip your hands at both sides of the chair slightly behind you for balance.

Starting position: Sit slightly toward the edge of the chair, the balls of your feet only lightly touching the floor.

Lean back and inhale. Exhale as you bring both knees toward the ceiling and back down to the floor to starting position. Repeat, making sure you feel no pain in your lower back.

II Arm Contractions This exercise is great for toning the biceps and triceps through isometric contraction.

Starting position: Sit up straight and tall, arms extended to both sides, palms facing up and make a fist.

New York City Department of Design and Construction, Councilmember Laurie Cumbo and Brooklyn Public Library Celebrate Reopening of Eastern Parkway Branch

T

he New York City Department of Design and Construction announced the completion of a roof restoration at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Eastern Parkway Branch on Monday, April 4th, effectively re-opening the 102-year-old Carnegie Library to the public. City Council Member Laurie Cumbo joined the ceremony along with Brooklyn Public Library officials and students from Brooklyn’s Public School 532.

The work included re-fitting and restoring the historical limestone roof in addition to installation of a new roof drainage system.

These improvements aim to make the building resilient against storms and overall deterioration due to aging.

“DDC is proud to help facilitate the reopening of Eastern Parkway Library” said DDC Commissioner Feniosky Peña-Mora. “This Carnegie Library has been a space to foster intellectual curiosity since the 20th century and we’re happy to preserve the historical features of the library while ensuring that the building is resilient in the 21st century.”

Students from P.S. 532 - New Bridges presented Councilmember Cumbo with thank you cards for her part in getting City Hall to support the restorations. The Eastern Parkway Branch opened in 1914 and was last renovated in 1975.

ast week, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams hit the mic for the launch of BK Sings, his first-of-its-kind borough-wide karaoke competition to find Brooklyn’s best amateur singers. Bars and restaurants across the borough will offer Brooklynites the opportunity to perform their favorite songs and compete to represent their neighborhood, leading into a final musical showdown that will crown the best karaoke singer in Brooklyn. Participants must be Brooklyn residents who are 18 years of age or older and are not engaged in a professional singing career. Judges will evaluate based on their execution of the song, which cannot contain any explicit lyrical content, as well as their stage presence and audience appeal.

Champions at local contests will move on to compete in regional semifinals, which will

determine the singers for the final round that will be held at Hill Country Barbecue Market in Downtown Brooklyn on Sunday, May 1st. The first prize winner will receive a karaoke machine as well as the opportunity to sing at an upcoming public event at MCU Park in Coney Island. Additionally, the second prize winner will win a tablet computer, and the third prize winner will earn a gift card good for dinner for two at Suede Restaurant in East Flatbush.

Chazaq Big Event Draws Big Names in Politics and Entertainment at Queens College

ueens College’s Colden Auditorium was filled to capacity for the second year running as local Queens-based organization Chazaq held its 4th Annual Big Event. Living up to its name, everything about the event was “big,” from the size of the audience (over 2,000 in attendance), to the high-profile personalities involved, to the concepts invoked by the evening’s speakers.

The borough’s leadership was well represented, with New York State Assemblymen Mi-

chael Simanowitz and David Weprin, New York State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, and City Council Members Karen Koslowitz and Rory Lancman all making personal appearances. Also in attendance were representatives of

Congresswoman Grace Meng, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, and New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer. The presenters also included U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (his second consecutive appearance); even Mayor

Bill de Blasio himself stopped by!

“Chazaq is such a wonderful and extraordinary organization,” declared de Blasio, “and the impact you have made... It is so important to support Chazaq because you have touched so many lives and you’ve strengthened the community

in so many ways.” The Mayor went on to extol the various social, cultural, and religious programs hosted by Chazaq, and to discuss, with a sense of gratitude, the contributions of the immigrant population to the greater New York community.
