r. Martin Luther King, Jr. once wrote, “It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important.” Those students who are protesting campus racism need to keep that quote in mind as they assert their right to feel safe and comfortable on campus.

When the protests have been well defined and include an end game, such as the University of Missouri protests that toppled a President and Chancellor, they have been effective. When protests broadly address issues like comfort, they are less successful.

And while it is satisfying to force a President (or a faculty member for that matter) to resign, the conditions of campus life will not necessarily change because there is a new leader. Structural racism is so firmly embedded in our culture that it will take years, if not decades, of focused work

and commitment to eliminate it.

Unfortunately, too many are less dedicated to eliminating institutional racism than they are to maintaining the status quo. Consider, for example, the rhetoric during these Republican Presidential debates.

Or, consider the clumsily racist question Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia posed when he asked whether black students should attend “lesser schools” than schools like the University of Texas.

Student activism was one of the highlights of 2015. Without waxing nostalgic, though, I’d suggest that some of these young activists take a page from the playbook written in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when protests shut campuses down for weeks. Student protests led to curriculum review on some campuses, the development of academic departments like African American studies and Ethnic Studies, the addition of faculty of color, a commitment to enroll more students of color, and more. “Back in the day,” we were far less concerned with “feeling” comfortable than with being empowered. We wanted change, and we were willing to fight for it. And, the change we wanted was tied to metrics.

More scholarships, more facul-

ty, more student admits. Not necessarily more comfort.

From my perspective discomfort is a good thing. Discomfort is a sign that something is wrong. Clearly there is much that is wrong on our campuses and in our nation. Racism is alive and well, though it shows itself in different forms than it did decades ago. The signs don’t say “white” or “colored” anymore. Few “civilized” Whites use the n— word, but expletives are hardly necessary when there is a coded language of exclusion.

Too many of us prefer complacency to discomfort. We prefer to think that everything is fine. Too many would like to pretend that inequality and injustice are minor matters until a headline shakes us out of complacency – a young man shot 16 times while he is on his back, a young woman supposedly hanging herself in a jail cell. Then there is protest, and anger, and rage. Still, too little done to develop a sustainable attack on the racism that plagues our nation.

Student activists of 2015 could learn from the sixties activists, and they can also teach “mainstream” leaders twenty-first century organizing techniques. And across generations, there must be teaching and learning about complacency and discomfort,

about what change looks like, and about what people are willing to give up to get change.

This 2016 election year promises lots of conversation about justice and change. Some political leaders will talk of “overregulation”, while others will suggest that we must pass new laws. Some will suggest that affirmative action is no longer necessary, while others are clear that there remains unequal access to higher education.

When questions of law are debated, I find it useful to consider Dr. King’s view of law – it won’t make you love me, but it will keep you from lynching me and, as he said, “that’s pretty important.” Dr. King described himself as a “drum major for justice,” not a drum major for comfort. The campus activists who are raising critical questions are motivated by justice and cannot allow themselves to be sidelined with conversations about comfort. Comfort will always be elusive in a racist society. And that’s a good thing.

Interest rates have now started going up again. We are still in a sellers’ market, meaning the demand for affordable homes exceeds the available supply. These factors are making homeownership extremely difficult for the low to moderate income first time buyers.

Hopefully, your employer will provide you with a cost of living increase, but that is usually absorbed in higher monthly living expenses.

So here are a few tips you can use to increase your savings as you prepare for homeownership: (1) Create a monthly household budget. This is the primary tool you have to use in the home buying process. Your budget will tell you how much you can save each month, how soon you will be ready to buy and how much you can afford to spend on a home. (2) Pay yourself first.

Set a goal to save a specific amount of money each month.

Do this as soon as you get paid.

Push yourself to aggressively save as much as possible. Review your budget periodically to make sure you are working towards meeting your goal.

Eliminate all wasteful spending. (3) Pay off all outstanding

Feb 4-7 The Harlem Fine Arts Show will return to the historic Riverside Church . Why Better Understanding Yourself Can Help You Set Goals

hen many of us think about making goals and keeping them, we think about external items, such as our bank accounts or our waistlines. But some experts believe that it’s best to turn inward when making positive changes.

“Your entire body, down to the tiniest part of you, is truly a bundle and expression of energy, expressed through digestion, thinking patterns, metabolism and lifestyle choices,” says Maria É Garre, a teacher and therapist of yoga and Ayurveda. “Un-

derstanding your energy type can help you set and maintain your goals.”

Garre says the first step toward understanding your life in a more connected way is to appreciate the qual-

ities and functions of the elements and how they relate to body and mind. She recommends a simple energy quiz from Gaia, a streaming-media provider, offering guidance on living a more conscious

The quiz is based on ancient Eastern teaching to help people discover which of the five basic elements—space, air, fire, water and earth—is most influential in them.

o you know which New Year’s resolution is among the most popular year after year?

If you said, “I’m going to lose weight,” you’re absolutely right. Many people have very aggressive weightloss goals at the beginning of the year. Others want to shed the extra one or two pounds they put on during the holiday season. But while we all have the best of intentions when we begin a new diet, studies show that more than a third of us will give up our new diets within the first week.

However, all is not lost (pun intended). It IS possible to lose weight safely and successfully over the long term.

You just need to understand the basic principles of weight loss as well as the proven tips and techniques that can help you shed those extra pounds.

A Formula for Weight Loss It’s long been known that weight management plays an important part in preventing chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and coronary artery disease (CAD).

When it comes to the various ways to approach weight loss, there is evidence that weight loss achieved through a combination of nutrition and physical activity is most effective at reducing risk factors for conditions such as CAD. It all boils down to a

The Age of Aquarius in 2016

ast Sunday I attended a 2016 New Year Forecast lecture at the Apollo Theater presented by the Wisdom Temple which featured a presentation by Astrologists Gale Armstead.

Gale’s talk about the new Aquarian age and how to prepare for it as we move into the New Year motivated me to do further research to write my first article for 2016.

Astrologers maintain that an astrological age is a product of the earth’s slow precessional rotation and last for 2,160 years on average (26,000-year pe-

riod of precession/ 12 zodiac signs = 2,160 years) In Sun sign astrology the sign of Aquarius comes before Pisces but in astrological ages the signs move in the opposite direction allowing the Age of Aquarius to follow the Age of Pisces.

Enlightenment and the expansion of consciousness were the two main factors that Gale and many astrologers predict will be experienced by a greater number of people in this beginning shift from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. The Mayan Great Cycle and early Egyptian astrological predictions agreed that 2012 would be the true beginning of the shift

ending one cycle and the start of a new cycle.

Astrologist Vera Reid attributes many of the current World crises to the transition from the external material mental energy of the Age of Pisces to the incoming internal spiritual mental energy of the Age of Aquarius which takes 280 years to complete. If the cycle shift started in 2012, we most likely will not be around in 2292 (276 years from now) when the cycle is completed; but we are blessed to be a part of the beginning.

Reid believes that some people will experience mental enlightenment in advance of others and will be recognized

as new leaders in the beginning of the new age.

Astrologist Sandra Weaver also believes that the great turmoil in the world during this early stage of Aquarius is a way of making room for new values of love, brotherhood, unity and integrity.

Weaver states that “the Aquarian Age points to the direction of our own evolution in consciousness. We are each being asked to make a choice.

We can cling to the old outdated values or adopt the new evolving ones.

Our happiness and peace depends on our choice and the change will take place whether we like it or not.

Nothing beats recognition when you’ve finished a project. Good job! Well done! Hearing those things is pretty awesome. But imagine working silently for years of your life while saving lives, and almost nobody notices. In the new book “Breakthrough!” by Jim Murphy, you’ll read about one man’s accomplishment and how it went nearly ignored for decades.

At just about eight pounds, eighteen-month-old Eileen Saxon was obviously small for her age, and she was weak. Doctors couldn’t agree on whether she could survive surgery or not, but they did agree on one thing: she would die without it.

It was late November 1944, and Dr. Alfred Blalock was standing in a surgical room, in front of Eileen’s little body.

Behind him was his assistant, Vivien Thomas, an African American man who’d perfected the procedure that was to be performed.

They were about to make history.

Fourteen years before that night, thirty-one-year-old physician and researcher Blalock, a white man born of privilege, was looking for an assistant in his Baltimore laboratory. A carpenter by trade, Thomas had grown up in an industrious family that put an emphasis on education; he’d been saving his money to go to medical school, in fact, when the

Great Depression erased it. His curiosity appealed to Blalock, who hired the African American man for $12 a week.

Despite racial differences and an initially rocky working relationship, the two men eventually got along fine and everything might’ve continued as it was – until Dr. Helen B. Taussig came along.

Taussig was an anomaly: she was female, at a time when few doctors were; she was also dyslexic and had a hearing disability, but she was laser-focused on treating babies born with heart defects. She knew there had to be a cure – so she took her ideas to Blalock, who instructed his assistant to start researching.

And he did: it was Vivien Thomas who discovered how to save the lives of those babies and children. It was Thomas, a “reserved and quiet man,” who engineered the tools to do it.

And it was Thomas who was almost ignored by history…

Much as I loved it, I struggled with “Breakthrough!”

The peeks back at mid-century medicine are fascinating, but parents should be aware that there’s quite a bit of detail about animal research, which may greatly bother sensitive kids.

Author Jim Murphy is quick to offer humaneness, but I shuddered.

And yet, there are bigger things that kids will find disturbing. They’ll likely wonder how a brilliant African-American man was passed over by

fame, while his colleagues were lauded. Murphy is quick to explain that, too; his thorough research is interesting and easyto-grasp and I think readers will be happy to see a decent ending to this particular chapter of discrimination.

Though there are plenty of medical terms and advanced language in this book, I think kids as young as 13 should be

able to handle it, especially if they’re science-minded. Heed the cautions and, for them, “Breakthrough!” is the way to go.

he first baby of 2016 born in the Bronx was Novahlyn Caraballo, born at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln at 12:22 am on New Year’s Day. Her mother, Rosana Alvarez, was also born at Lincoln years earlier and still lives nearby. Both the 6 lb 4.9 oz baby girl and her mother are doing well.

BAM and the National Book Foundation present Eat, Drink & Be Literary, Feb 16—June 8

B

AM’s popular Eat, Drink & Be Literary series, presented in partnership with the National Book Foundation, will host eight award-winning writers from February 16 through June 8. The diverse group of participants have produced award-winning novels, literary histories, plays, poems, and short stories. Several, including Bill Clegg, Karl Ove Knausgard, and Darryl Pinckney, find inspiration in their personal histories, reflecting on themes of addiction, family, and race. The works of Marlon James, Yiyun Li, and Zadie Smith

capture the vibrant patois and culture of Jamaica, China, and London, respectively, while photographer Sally Mann and poet Eileen Myles find evocative ways to explore feminism and sexuality.

Authors will read from their work and share inspirations, creative processes, and anecdotes with the audience over dinner in BAMcafé. These evenings offer literary devotees— writers and readers alike— the opportunity to socialize in an informal setting that also encourages in-depth discussion.

Doors open at 6pm and

dinner begins at 6:30pm.

The meal—featuring a seasonal menu devised by Great Performances with James Beard award winners and local Brooklyn chefs— includes dessert, wine, and live music. The evening continues with a reading by the author, a moderated discussion, a Q&A with the audience, and a book signing. The Greenlight Bookstore at BAM kiosk provides books for purchase.

Tickets for Eat, Drink & Be Literary are $60, which includes admission to the reading, dinner, wine, tax, and tip. Subscription (four or more) tickets are $51.

ueens Council on the Arts is excited to announce the upcoming High School of Art School Alumni Exhibition: Chapter 2. Chapter 2 is a group show featuring the work of High School to Art School program alumni. HS2AS is a scholarship-based portfolio development program for high school students run out of Queens Council on the Arts, located in Astoria. In HS2AS, students acquire the knowledge and skills that allows them to work successfully with a variety of media and subjects, and create an impressive and tech-

accomplishments. This exhibition showcases the impressive talent of our students, as well as the diversity of their interests.

The exhibition will open Thursday, January 7 from 6pm – 8pm until June at the Edison Price Lighting Gallery, which is located at 4150 22nd Street in Long Island City. Edison Price Lighting is famous for defining the aesthetics and functionality of modern lighting. They are known for their minimalist designs, and using only locally sourced materials. Edison Price has provided lighting for countless museums and galleries, including shows at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The National Gallery of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
