Celebrities Talk Diversity at 47th Annual NAACP Image Awards

Since 1967, the Image Awards has celebrated “outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts, as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors,” according to the NAACP website.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith attended the Image Awards after publicly announcing that they would not attend the Academy Awards due to the lack of diversity. After the Smiths and director Spike Lee announced their plans to skip the Oscars this year, several actors of color have been more vocal about their views on diversity in Hollywood.

“We don’t need to ask for acceptance from anyone,” said “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson when she received her award for outstanding actress in a drama series. “We are enough, we’ve been enough and we always will be enough.”

Creed actor Michael B. Jordan went home with two awards for outstanding actor in a motion picture and entertainer of the year. “Straight Outta Compton” received an award for outstanding motion picture.

he 47th annual NAACP Image Awards was a hit at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, Calif., as Black entertainers showed their support for one another and the show, while some expressed concerns over the lack of diversity in other major award shows like the Academy Awards.

“I think it’s very unfortunate that we are not included more often in the Oscars. Whether to boycott it or not that’s up to each individual’s discretion,” said Andra Fuller, star of TV One’s “Here We Go Again.”

“The boycott will bring awareness.

If you want us to be at your award shows, then recognize us.”

The Image Awards honor the achievements of African Americans in television, music, literature and film. ABC’s “black-ish” star Anthony Anderson hosted the show, opening with a “Straight Outta Compton” rap performance spoof that talked about the lack of diversity in this year’s award season.

“Hollywood needs to know that this is what diversity is supposed to look like,” Anderson said after his performance.

Both films were snubbed during the nomination process for the Academy Awards.

“I’m excited to have the NAACP Image Awards to recognize African American artist and talent. But, it doesn’t say to me that we don’t have a role or place at the Oscars. We’re not mutually exclusive. We can be here tonight celebrating each other and we can be there on the [February] 28th,” said attorney Areva Martin.

Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph noted the importance of viewing African American-branded award shows in the same light of shows like the Academy Awards.

“We shouldn’t look to others to validate how wonderful and beautiful we are,” Ralph said. “I am a great actress and I’ve been in the game for a long time. Remember, we weren’t always celebrated by others that’s why we created shows like this.”

The show paid great attention to those in entertainment and public service. Sanaa Lathan received the award for best actress in a motion picture for her role in “The Perfect Guy.” Pastor Jamal Bryant, Jussie Smollett of the hit show “Empire,” activist group Concerned Student Collective 1950 at the University of Missouri at Columbia, and five other recipients received the NAACP Chairman’s Award, which honors those with distinguished public service.

The ceremony also featured performances by Smollett, singer Alice Smith and Grammy Award-winning artist John Legend, who received the NAACP President’s Award for his philanthropy.

John Legend said that, “Despite the daunting problems, I am hopeful that our generation will demand and achieve radical change in our lifetime.”

Store current files in filing cabinets. Older ones can be kept in boxes if

Bookkeepers use four different storage methods. File folders are useful for invoices, payment information, payroll data, employee information, and customer information.

Three-ring binders can hold your General Ledger, Journals, and Chart of Accounts. You should also keep a copy of last month and the current month records here in case of a computer problem.

Expandable files are

useful for managing your purchase ledger and supplier accounts. File invoices in a 12-month file in the month that they are due, then when the month arrives transfer them into a 30-day folder for the day they are due. If your accounts are computerized you can set this up on your system rather than use files.

If using a computer, ensure that you backup daily and store in a safe place.

Discarding Paperwork.

Anything tax-related must be kept for at

least three years, but you can discard it after seven years.

However, anything to do with employees must be kept for a minimum of three years after the employee has left your company. After seven years you may discard it.

It may seem obvious, but anything related to current company assets or any pending legal issues should be retained. As always, check with your accountant and attorney before throwing away any old paperwork.

Millennials: Tips on How to Invest for a Brighter Financial Future (Statepoint)

he majority of Americans say retirement investing is a priority, but more than half consider Social Security a top-three source for funding retirement, and 40 percent of millennials expect Social Security (along with 401(k)s and pensions) to fund their golden years, according to Capital One Investing’s Financial Freedom Survey.

“With the future of Social Security uncertain, all Americans, and millennials in particular, should be proactively planning for their financial futures,” said Yvette Butler, president of Capital One Investing, a full-service brokerage. “There are consequences to sitting on 4

the sidelines, most importantly a smaller nest egg in the long-term.”

Capital One Investing found 93 percent of millennials say that distrust of the markets, lack of knowledge, little understanding of pricing and costs, and general complexities make them feel less confident about investing.

“Now more than ever, the onus is on the individual investor to plan for a financially stable future,” said Butler. “The industry needs to offer millennial investors educational tools and transparent products that will support them as they do so.”

With that in mind, Butler offers several ideas that may help young-

er investors establish a straightforward financial plan they can stick to.

• Start early: The earlier you start planning and investing, the better. Once you have an emergency fund saved, you may want to consistently contribute to a diversified retirement account to try to maximize your long-term gains.

Even small amounts invested today can add up over time. Tools like the ShareBuilder Investment Plan enable you to invest a set dollar amount and buy fractional shares of stocks, ETFs and mutual funds.

• Go online: An online investing account is easy to open and doesn’t require a lot of cash to get

started, and online investing and mobile apps give you increased on-the-go flexibility.

Low-cost portfolio building tools that take into account your investment horizon and risk tolerance can also help develop a strategy that works for you.

• Get educated: From stocks and bonds to mutual funds, ETFs, IRAs and 401(k)s, there are a lot of strategies and vehicles out there, and it may seem overwhelming at first. In fact, according to Capital One Investing’s survey, more than half of investors of all ages say their lack of knowledge and experience in investing hinders them from feeling confident about taking

action. You may eliminate this barrier by exploring free financial resources and educational tools that can help you sort out the facts and learn about tried and true investing principles.

• Ask for help: A trusted professional can offer unbiased advice, and may help you develop an investing strategy you can follow and adjust, while instilling confidence about your future.

Journalist and former New York Association of Black Journalists President Michael J. Feeney has died. He was 32.

eeney passed recently from complications while being treated for a staph infection in his kidneys, according to his mother Reba Willis.

He previously worked for the New York Daily News, The Record in Bergen County, N.J., the Associated Press and was also a freelance writer for Ebony magazine, NBC News and TheGrio.com.

Prior to his death, Feeney was preparing for a position he accepted at CNN as an entertainment

reporter.

National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) President Sarah Glover said Feeney was a true leader in the organization.

“I am shocked to learn of Michael’s passing. He was a respected leader within NABJ having served with distinction as chapter president of the New York Association of Black Journalists for years.

His leadership led to that chapter receiving the NABJ Chapter of

the Year Award,” Glover said. “He was a tenacious journalist who possessed a passion and energy for telling stories reflective of diverse communities — stories which otherwise might not have been told.”

Social media has been buzzing over Feeney’s passing since Sunday.

Several notables offered their condolences.

“Just heard that Michael Feeney, young dynamic journalist died this morning. A good brother and fine journalist. Sad

news, RIP Michael,” Rev. Al Sharpton said via Twitter.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called Feeney a “leader” and a “rising” star in a tweet.

“My condolences to the friends and family of Michael Feeney. Rest in peace,” he said.

A native of Teaneck, N.J., Feeney was a 2005 graduate of Delaware State University. Upon being honored with NABJ’s Emerging Journalist of the Year Award in 2010, he went on a

speaking tour which took him to several Black college campuses.

He was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fra-

ternity, Inc. Feeney is survived by his mother, sister, Maria Feeney and a twin brother, Anthony Feeney.

he challenge for many first time low to moderate income prospective buyers is obvious. They do not have enough money saved for the down payment and closing costs. Most of these families are struggling to meet their current monthly living expenses. The high cost of living in New York City is making it almost impossible to save any money for buying a home.

When you couple this problem with the inflated values of home prices in the area, it becomes a nearly impossible task for low to moderate income buyers to achieve their dream of homeownership. The annual incomes for most low to moderate prospective buyers have failed

to significantly keep up with inflation. So in order to buy a home today, you must create a plan of action that will help you in combating this income deficit. It is difficult to aggressively save money when all of the money coming into the household is going out to pay the bills. A new strategy must be put in place.

Young People Can Impact the World by ‘Standing on the Shoulders’ of Mentors

key battle strategies and how to organize people to make lasting change. “Marches and rallies don’t solve problems, but basically raise people’s awareness of what’s going on,” King says.

“You’ve got to have that backdrop of organization if you’re talking about institutional change.”

Following King’s advice, Chain is organizing a multiracial student group consisting of blacks, Latinos and forward-thinking white students who may have different perspectives on the same problem. Seeing his vision coming together, Chain says he is amazed at what he is achieving by listening to King.

“He’s showing us how to create a mass organization and how to organize people. And he’s shaping me on how to be a more profound leader and how to develop well thought-out ideas,” Chain says. “He’s actually molding me to become a leader. And I’m truly grateful for that.”

of young people are angry at the elders from the civil rights movement,” she says. “They said that it seems that after Dr. King got assassinated they dropped the ball and they feel like they are fighting the same fight that their parents and grandparents were fighting.”

Bright recently organized a forum featuring young activists on a panel and elders in the audience. She discovered that the youth needed to be heard. But when young people also listen, they are sometimes “lost for words when asked how they are going to do certain things...We don’t know how powerful we are together.”

That’s where the wisdom of the elders come in, Chain says.

“If you want to go far, you really have to learn from someone who’s done it before you. They may not be caught up in the same social evolution as you with technology and other things. But they understand the principles, and that’s something that I’ve been adopting in my life.”

hen Jajuan Chain, a history major at Morehouse College in Atlanta, needed to interview someone for a class assignment, he reached out to 1960s civil rights icon Lonnie C. King Jr., a founding member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and founding chairman of The Committee on Appeal for Human Rights.

After their first encounter, neither King, 79, nor Chain, 22, ever expected that within weeks they would become mentor and protégé working on an organizational project involving Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other universities in Atlanta that Chain believes will impact the rest of his life.

Chain says that King is taking the time to share his experience to train him as a young leader. And their collaboration is working. “We want more than a movement,” Chain says. “We want something that’s going to last for generations, something that’s going to have substance that will not only have a national impact, but an international impact.”

Unlike King and Chain, clarity and understanding between young and older generations has not always been the case during recent uprisings against police killings of unarmed African Americans over the past several years. From Slave Ships to ‘Black Lives Matter’: Nation’s Newest Smithsonian to Tell Story of African Americans

n 1955, Mamie Till, the grieving mother of Emmett Till, said she wanted the world to see what had been done to her son.

Sixty years later, the glass-topped coffin that displayed the mutilated body of the 14-year-old victim of racial hatred is among thousands of compelling artifacts slated for display in the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington.

Anticipation builds as the museum, opening in September 2016, prepares to receive visitors from around the world. It will tell the story of American history like never before - from an African-American perspective.

When the doors open, the three-floor, 400,000-square-foot facility will not only display ancient artifacts but also showcase more current events and how they fit into the continuum of American history.

“We want to be the place where people come and say, ‘OK, this just happened.

What’s the background to this? What preceded this?’” says John Franklin, a museum director. So items from recent oc-

currences such as the Black Lives Matter campaign and the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March will be included.

The five-acre museum site, located on Constitution Avenue, between the Washington Monument and the National Museum of American History, will be the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African-American life, art, history and culture. Among the exhibits: * An underground gallery tracing artifacts from a sunken slave ship from the 1500s to the administration of President Barack Obama, America’s first African-American president. * Slave artifacts, including items that belonged to Harriet Tubman. * Segregation artifacts, including a railroad car showing Colored-only and White-only quarters. * Black incarceration, illustrated by a guard tower and a cell from Louisiana’s Angola Prison, formerly a slave facility named for the African country. * A section called the power of place, illustrating the unique experiences of African Americans in the

The evening celebrated Black excellence in film, media and activism honoring Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay, Black Lives Matter, actress and playwright Danai Gurira, actor Hill Harper and MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry. The sold out soiree was a packed house attended by the cast of the award winning play Eclipsed, actress Susan Kelechi Watson, Emmy award winning hair stylist Lavette Slayer and Marvet Britto.

The evening was hosted by 103.9FM’s on-air personality Terry Bello who kept the night flowing with jokes and lively commentary. The night opened with a performance by vocalist Jeremy James followed by a heart felt video message from the Revolution Award for Trailblazing Achievements recipient Ava DuVernay.

Ava addressed the need for the images of people of color and women to have caregivers and talked about her long standing relationship with ImageNation saying, “ImageNation was one of the very first organizations I aligned with when I was launching AFFRM in 2010. AFFRM is now ARRAY and ImageNation has been there with us every step of the way.”

Ava also gave a personal message for each of the other honorees saying about Danai, “I feel fortunate to live in a world where a voice like that not only exists but is being amplified and is shining so beautifully” and sharing her love for Melissa Harris-Perry’s MSNBC show saying, “She is a triumph sitting there on that show every week, a trimph for women, a triumph for people of color, a triumph for people who believe in justice and dignity, a triumph for nerds.”

Long-Term Care Planning

ith about 10,000 Americans turning 65 each day, many families are making decisions about elder care.

Due to the complexity and importance of these decisions, elder-care planning should include working with financial and estate-planning professionals who are experts at protecting assets and paying for care, if needed.

Several avenues exist to pay for elder care needs.

Traditional avenues, such as Medicaid, have strict requirements for eligibility. To meet Medicaid requirements, many families

are forced to exhaust their assets, and less wealth is passed to future generations. Families are being left impoverished. Most of us know folks who have lost family homes and prospective inheritance due to the financial burden of long-term elder care. This substantial loss is due to the lack of professional planning. Longterm elder care planning is not limited to Medicaid impoverishment creation.

Spending down does not have to be the only option.

If you have the opportunity to position your assets in a way to be useful to you and your family, you should take the opportuni-

ty. Make the commitment to do it.

I, like many others, am amazed that I am no longer in my 20s and that the aging process does not comply with how I feel.

Still, planning is imperative. Seventy percent of people turning 65 can be expected to use some form of long-term care in their lifetime. We often look to our own knowledge of the past for the information on how to insure our future. But our knowledge is limited. We are not all aware of the various veterans’ benefits or the use of irrevocable trusts and qualified annuities. Working with the right team

PONDER THIS! What We Think Matters

E

very thought creates something. Thinking is not something we choose to do; it is as natural as breathing and as consistent as automatic pilot. On our own, we cannot cease from doing either no matter how hard we try.

What we think about is the crux of it.

Our brain was created

to be the command center, headquarters of the thought processor of the body.

When the brain is functioning properly, it transmits either a GO or NO instruction that activates a chain reaction to engage the gears of this profound locomotive, that is our body.

Even when we are at rest as we know it, the commands are still coming forth. From the outer skin to the deepest bone, to the blood cascading from the pumping of the heart, every organ, muscle, artery and joint knows its duty. We are wonderfully created.

However, the body remains a puzzle to the trained medical minds and scientists. If there is a weak link

anywhere within, it is that we are not diligent in our focus on good health and wellness. I believe it is because of what we bring to the plate, no pun implied, but we are weak to our intake, and we do know better. We ingest to appease our appetite and then in hindsight, we ask, what was I thinking? I believe our thoughts can either make us or break us.

Let’s be real. It’s not easy to think positive all of the time. We are engulfed by frustration, our own and others. We are embedded in deadly daily news on the screen, in our face, twenty four hours a day. Now, we can receive urgent alerts and broadcasts on smartphones under the tunnels of the

city via Wi-Fi. There is no rest for the weary. We are warned by the NYPD not to shut our eyes or snatch a nap on the subway since recent incidents of face slashing.

Harlem’s Poet Laureate, Langston Hughes wrote, “I don’t dare start thinking in the morning, if I thought thoughts in bed, them thoughts would bust my head, so I don’t dare start thinking in the morning.” Such words warn that there are thoughts you can have upon awakening that will set the remote control of your mind to a channel that will determine how your day will be, before it begins.

The kind of thinking that can promote a meltdown or a complete shutdown.

By Hazel Rosetta Smith You wish you didn’t have to get out of bed, dread the subway, hate the job, resent the boss and barely tolerate the other workers who don’t acknowledge your presence anyway. How can you expect anything other than what you have thought into existence? Perhaps things are not what they appear to be? Maybe you are not who you think you are? Maybe your negative brand is what others see?

Surely you don’t want to wake up and discover you can’t physically get up, the trains are reportedly not running on schedule and you have already been late too many days. Then the phone rings and that boss you talk bad about is calling

to say you are fired. What then? Dark thoughts just might conjure up stuff you really don’t want to think about.

Choose to think about the sunny side of things. Live in an attitude of gratitude, love with all your heart and be happy, just because. Think about performing at your personal best in all that you do. Acknowledge the good in others. Give positive thinking a try, you just might surprise yourself.

J

ust a few blocks downtown, folks are making decisions (again) about something we take for granted, something we need and must have to be accepted as fully functioning members of society each day. I’m going to give you a few hints, so see if you can guess . . . Membership is restricted and entrée into their world is by invitation only. They are coming from all over the world, as members of an aristocracy of sorts. They convene twice a year in exclusive groups to see and be seen, and to support one another’s initiatives.

They are judge and jury. Their

power is immeasurable, but they are harmless. They are feared. They are loved. They believe that they know you and what you want them to do for you . . .but they never ask your opinion. And in the end, you take what they give you.

Do you know who they are?

If you guessed the captains of the fashion industry, arbiters of style or fashion mavens, then you are right!

And they decide what is going to be in style! Yep, Fashion Week is in full swing. Thousands of retailers, fashion journalists and celebrities from all over the world are gathering to view the collections. Designers big and small have put all of their creative efforts, energy and thousands of dollars into designing a col-

lection and producing a show to garner the favor of a very fickle and jaded audience. But this is The Big Time! Their efforts culminate in a 20-minute show for the aristocracy; and those few precious minutes could mean the difference between success and failure. The goal is to gain admittance to the club, attain celebrity status or at the very least be granted the title of, “The New Visionary” or “Someone to Watch.”

Yes, there will be winners and losers but what about us?

After the movers and shakers see the shows they will return to their respective kingdoms to determine what you and I will wear in the fall of 2016. It’s a little scary really. What if we don’t like their choices? Do they know that

we don’t like stripes or that we are moving towards orange as “The New Black”? How do they manage to make those choices without consulting us?

Do they have any idea how many times we have tried to shop for something special and come up empty handed because we couldn’t find anything? Mind you, the stores were full of things to buy. Our problem: the color isn’t right, it was too short or made in the wrong fabric and on top of it all; it was cut to fit a worm’s body. The bottom line, it wasn’t fitting us or our lifestyle! So, you ask, what to do? How can you have an impact on what is chosen by retailers? I can only think of one way, prayer. That’s right prayer! You see, retailers

can only chose from what is shown to them, so pray for the designers. Pray that they get it right and that they will speak for us. Pray that they give us clothes we can wear.

Pray that they create with at least a size 10 mind-set! Pray that they have their finger on the pulse of our workplaces, malls and halls of power; if they do, they can’t fail. But alas, the sad truth is that they aren’t even thinking about us, but that shouldn’t stop us from thinking about them! If you don’t see what you are looking for in the fall—you’ll know why. If you miss this chance to mind meld with the designers you will have another opportunity to in the fall of 2016, that’s when the aristocracy meets again to choose

what we will be wearing in the spring of 2017. Think about it. See you next week.

he weather has been frightfully cold. It is an opportunity for us to reach out to the elderly and the young mothers in our buildings to make sure that everything is warm and everybody is okay. Those of you who have pets should keep them in the house on cold days like these.

There is no joy in the conviction of P.O. Peter Liang. He violated department procedures and was irr4esponsible in his actions in regard to the killing of Akai Gurley in a Brooklyn Housing Project. Indeed it was an accidental shooting, but there was enough carelessness

“The Invisibles: The Untold Story of African American Slaves in The White House” REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

I

f the walls could talk, imagine what they’d say.

They’d reminisce about family meals, holidays, celebrations and romance, take sides in arguments, and watch children grow. If those walls could talk, they’d tell of triumph, disappointment, beginnings, and endings. And, as in the new book, “The Invisibles”

by Jesse J. Holland, they’d talk of freedom and history.

When Barack Obama moved into the White House in 2009, he was, by far, not the first black man to live there. From the beginning, as soon as America had a president, there were slaves residing in the Executive Mansion

; in fact, says Holland , “ten of the first twelve presidents [were] slaveholders at some point in their lives.”

When George Washington fought in the Revolutionary War, his “favorite” slave, Billy Lee, went with him so it was natural that Washington would bring Lee to New York , to the first presidential mansion. Lee reportedly loved New York but when he suffered physical disabilities, Washington summarily replaced him, sending him back to Mt. Vernon where Lee was later one of a handful of slaves who comforted Washington as he died.

As a child, Oney Judge was brought up to learn sew-

ing at Martha Washington’s knee. Years later, Washington would say that she thought of Judge as a “surrogate daughter,” but she was more than willing to give Judge away in order to keep her enslaved. Judge, by the way, was one of a few slaves known to have escaped from a president.

Thomas Jefferson brazenly took a slave to France , where slavery was disallowed; the slave, who was the brother of Jefferson ’s “concubine,” Sally, did not try to escape. When Dolley Madison fell on hard times after leaving the White House, her husband’s former slave gave her money. Andrew Jack-

son kept slaves in the White House stables; they were jockeys and Jackson loved racing ponies. James Monroe spoke out against slavery, even as he owned slaves. Andrew Johnson possibly had a “’colored concubine.’” And just one ex-slave of a president was “honored by a holder of that office.”

Wow. Please practice saying that word – “Wow!” – because you’ll need it even more when you start reading “The Invisibles.”

In just under two-hundred pages, author Jesse J. Holland packs so many interesting stories, so many jaw-dropping facts that, even though there were small errors and minor repetition, I

by Jesse J. Holland very much regretted this books’ shortness. Holland ’s storytelling skills have a way of making a reader hungry for more, and the tales he tells are surprising and even inspirational.

Some of those tales – mixed in between those of the presidents’ slaves - precede the White House, to look at slavery from the nation’s very beginning, even before there was a president. That’s where we learn that an African immigrant was the owner of the first legal slave…

Admittedly, die-hard historians might not find much new here, but I simply couldn’t put this book down.

If you want something that’s short on pages but long on

interest, “The Invisibles” is the one you’ll be talking about.

CAN DO TIP Week #14 Wade in the Water: Give it some “flava” Pt. 3

52 CAN DO’S: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions for each week of the year Due to the interest of readers concerning the Wade in the Water series, during the month of February I’ll go “back to basics” for a month-long mini-expose’ of the role water plays in our lives and how this substance that makes up about 60% of our bodies may very well be one of the simplest solutions for optimal health and well-being.

But first…A Black Histo-

ry Moment: Wade in the Water remains one of my favorite songs, which happens to be a Negro spiritual– (checkout my performance of this song a couple years ago www.ThehealthyMotivator. com) because the lyrics, like most other negro spirituals, contained survival tools --specific instructions directing fugitive slaves to avoid capture by slave masters on their path to freedom. Taking the water route as opposed to land to throw the bloodhounds off their trail was a common strategy since it is more difficult to pick up scent through the water. Special thanks to Bro. Calvin Earl, a performance artist, historian who in 2007 succeeded in moving U.S. Congress to a unanimous vote to recognize the African Amer-

ican spiritual as an official National Treasure.

A century and a half later, the role of water has not changed. It saves lives if used properly. This week we take a look at fruit infused water. Luscious lime, gorgeous grapes, tantalizing tangerines, mouthwatering melon; the appearance of infused water is so appealing to the eyes – it makes choosing water over soft drinks and juices a definite “can-do!”

Infused water is made by combining plain water (preferably filtered water) with a single or combination of fruits, vegetables, even herbs for a refreshing, virtually calorie and sugar free beverage. Plus your children will absolutely LOVE the vibrant colors without the artificial “coloring”! Better yet, let them create their own

infused water flavors!

Steps to take BEFORE Infusing To get reduce intake of germs, bacteria and pesticides, wash tough skin fruit like oranges, lemons or smooth skin like grapes and cherries in baking soda, white vinegar and cold water. For porous, delicate fruit like berries simply soak in water and vinegar for a couple minutes then rinse carefully with cold water. Normally 2-4 parts water to 1 part vinegar and 1 part baking soda works for me. The trick is to peel and thinly slice your fruit enabling the most flavor to come through without the bitter rind. For soft berries, slightly squeeze or muddle the fruit in order to release the essence of the flavor before dunking. Use a large

Journalist and former New York Association of Black Journalists President Michael J. Feeney has died. He was 32.

F

eeney passed recently from complications while being treated for a staph infection in his kidneys, according to his mother Reba Willis.

He previously worked for the New York Daily News, The Record in Bergen County, N.J., the Associated Press and was also a freelance writer for Ebony magazine, NBC News and TheGrio.com.

Prior to his death, Feeney was preparing for a position he accepted at CNN as an entertainment

reporter.

National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) President Sarah Glover said Feeney was a true leader in the organization.

“I am shocked to learn of Michael’s passing. He was a respected leader within NABJ having served with distinction as chapter president of the New York Association of Black Journalists for years.

His leadership led to that chapter receiving the NABJ Chapter of

the Year Award,” Glover said. “He was a tenacious journalist who possessed a passion and energy for telling stories reflective of diverse communities — stories which otherwise might not have been told.”

Social media has been buzzing over Feeney’s passing since Sunday.

Several notables offered their condolences.

“Just heard that Michael Feeney, young dynamic journalist died this morning. A good brother and fine journalist. Sad

news, RIP Michael,” Rev. Al Sharpton said via Twitter.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called Feeney a “leader” and a “rising” star in a tweet.

“My condolences to the friends and family of Michael Feeney. Rest in peace,” he said.

A native of Teaneck, N.J., Feeney was a 2005 graduate of Delaware State University. Upon being honored with NABJ’s Emerging Journalist of the Year Award in 2010, he went on a

speaking tour which took him to several Black college campuses.

He was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fra-

ternity, Inc. Feeney is survived by his mother, sister, Maria Feeney and a twin brother, Anthony Feeney.

The President’s budget is a contrast with the special interest agenda that has consistently defined House Republicans’ budget plans. Unfor-

tunately, Republicans are sinking to a new low in proving their contempt for President Obama and a budget that meets the needs of America’s growing communities. Without precedent in modern Congressional history, the Republican Chairmen of the House and Senate Budget Committees have refused to allow the Director of the Office of Management and Budget to present the President’s budget request and are not interested in hearing about a budget that invests in the future and

grows the wages of hard-working Americans.

“The President’s budget represents a sharp contrast with House Republicans’ plans to protect special interests, abandon seniors, cut education funding and undermine working families,” continued Rangel. “I will continue to stand with my House Democratic colleagues to fight for a budget that embraces the American Dream and secures a future of prosperity and opportunity for all.”

Journalist and former New York Association of Black Journalists President Michael J. Feeney has died. He was 32.

eeney passed recently from complications while being treated for a staph infection in his kidneys, according to his mother Reba Willis.

He previously worked for the New York Daily News, The Record in Bergen County, N.J., the Associated Press and was also a freelance writer for Ebony magazine, NBC News and TheGrio.com.

Prior to his death, Feeney was preparing for a position he accepted at CNN as an entertainment

reporter.

National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) President Sarah Glover said Feeney was a true leader in the organization.

“I am shocked to learn of Michael’s passing. He was a respected leader within NABJ having served with distinction as chapter president of the New York Association of Black Journalists for years.

His leadership led to that chapter receiving the NABJ Chapter of

the Year Award,” Glover said. “He was a tenacious journalist who possessed a passion and energy for telling stories reflective of diverse communities — stories which otherwise might not have been told.”

Social media has been buzzing over Feeney’s passing since Sunday.

Several notables offered their condolences.

“Just heard that Michael Feeney, young dynamic journalist died this morning. A good brother and fine journalist. Sad

news, RIP Michael,” Rev. Al Sharpton said via Twitter.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called Feeney a “leader” and a “rising” star in a tweet.

“My condolences to the friends and family of Michael Feeney. Rest in peace,” he said.

A native of Teaneck, N.J., Feeney was a 2005 graduate of Delaware State University. Upon being honored with NABJ’s Emerging Journalist of the Year Award in 2010, he went on a

speaking tour which took him to several Black college campuses.

He was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fra-

ternity, Inc. Feeney is survived by his mother, sister, Maria Feeney and a twin brother, Anthony Feeney.

Without precedent in modern Congressional history, the Republican Chairmen of the House and Senate Budget Committees have refused to allow the Director of the Office of Management and Budget to present the President’s budget request and are not interested in hearing about a budget that invests in the future and

grows the wages of hard-working Americans.
