any low to moderate first time home buyers are convinced they cannot afford to purchase a home in Harlem. Most of their belief stems from realizing the soaring home market values are beyond their means. They know banks have lower lending limits than in the past. To further exacerbate the situation most low income families have not received sufficient salary increases to keep pace with inflation and can barely maintain their monthly living expenses.

hroughout its history the APOLLO has consistently been THE most famous theatre in the world, a model of innovation and excellence, the birth place of legends! A creative sacred place that put HARLEM in a very prominent position on the music maps of the entire world. ...Therefore what better place to be this February to celebrate Black History Month?

The special Black History Month programs that the Apollo is presenting are artistically exciting and historically grounded, celebrating through music and dance, comedy and films the fight, the endurance, the resilience and the achievements of the civil rights movements and

its leaders.

On February 4, the Apollo returned to its comedic roots with an Apollo Live Wire discussion on the history of comedy followed by the Apollo Comedy Club which featured Me Me Simpson, Kareem Green and John Laster. The story of comedy at the Apollo offers insights into the history of Black humor, politics, and entertainment through the voices of an impressive list of extraor-

dinary comedians who have performed there: Butterbeans & Susie, Moms Mabley, Flip Wilson, Timmie Rogers, Redd Foxx, Dick Gregory and Chris Rock to name a few. The discussion moderated by Mel Watkins, journalist and author of On The Real Side, Leighann Lord, comedian and Bob Sumner, producer of Def Comedy Jam and Apollo Comedy Club curator, took us on a journey to discover some of these artists

Portraits of New York High Society at The Museum of the City Of New York

T

he Museum of the City of New York presents Picturing Prestige: New York Portraits, 17001860, an ensemble of iconic New Yorkers presented by intricate and elegant portraits, which were commissioned as status symbols and painted by the very best artists a young nation had to offer. Picturing Prestige is currently open to the public.

Visitors will see familiar figures, such as the renowned John Trumbull portrait of Alexander Hamilton that inspired the image on our ten-dollar bill, and will also come face-to-face with New

Yorkers like Richard Varick, of Varick Street in Greenwich Village, and the Brooks family, of Brooks Brothers fame, whose names are part of the city’s fabric but whose stories remain untold to a broad audience. This unique exhibition draws from the City Museum’s permanent collection to reveal the evolution of a dynamic city through its leading merchants, politicians and patrons, as well as the development of portraiture itself, one of New York’s oldest visual art forms.

February is Gum Disease Awareness Month

r. Donna Williams of Morningside Dental Care in Harlem, helped to launch the “Gum Disease Awareness” campaign in New York two years ago. Dedicated to raising the awareness about the prevalence and dangers of gum disease, Dr. Williams reached out to her political leaders for help. Now in 2016, New York is among 48 states that proclaim February “Gum Disease Awareness” month.

A recent study claims that women who have reached their menopause stage and are suffering from any kind of gum disease have a higher chance of suffering from breast cancer too. Research-

ers are still studying the link between gum disease and breast cancer.

Currently, they found that the bacteria that is present in the mouth may also start affecting the breast tissues if they get into the circulatory system. Gum disease is a health threat that has also been linked to heart disease, stroke, some cancers and even stillbirths. Experts agree that up to 85% of Americans suffer from some form of gum disease, and most don’t know it.

The “Gum Disease Awareness” effort will draw public attention to the dangers and widespread nature of the disease. Gum disease is one of the most common diseases in the United States.

Often symptoms of gum disease are ignored until the disease is in advanced stages, when tooth loss is common.

With the help of Dr. Williams, New York has joined the other states and adopted Gum Disease Awareness Month in order to educate its citizens about widespread health threat of gum disease and the importance of prevention and treatment.

Gratitude: The Quality of Being Thankful

A

common cause of depression is the inability to recognize our blessings. If you are reading this dialog and you are depressed, be thankful, the mind of the universe is sending you a message.

We become depressed because we focus on depressing things, things that we fear and don’t want. What you think about often will manifest in your reality.

When we think about the life we would like to have with faith and without fear and doubt we have the ability to transform the reality of our lives; for this we should be thankful.

Gratitude is the quality of being thankful. Simple words like “thank you” is an easy way to show gratitude. It can be difficult to show gratitude if you are not aware that you have been born with the blessing of thought manifestation and all that you need to be happy. Nothing or no one outside of yourself can truly make you happy. The foundation of happiness is internal; we are all socially programed to believe that the key to our happiness is external.

Often our thoughts of depression come from our social-

alentine’s Day is this weekend, and I know that you are expecting me to write about all sorts of Valentine’s related things—gift ideas to consider buying hot, sexy lingerie to surprise your significant other, getting one of those glamour photos, etc . . .

Not this year! Valentine’s Day is, simply put, the commercialization of romance! Advertisers send a subliminal, yet very powerful message that everybody should be in a relationship, and that

something is wrong with you if you are not. Valentine’s Day is also a day that you can use to let all the people in your life know that you love them, which means you’ll have different expressions of love for each. So, instead of giving into the hype, consider giving a gift from the heart instead.

If you are in a relationship, don’t put so much weight on what your significant other gives you on V-Day. How does he or she treat you the other 364 days of the year? If they treat you well, then don’t quibble if you don’t get the flowers, candy or whatever you feel you should get . . . If he/she

treats you badly that means it is time to rethink the relationship.

If you are single, don’t get caught up in what others are getting—show some love to your family and friends and most importantly to yourself! If it will make you feel better, get your own flowers and candy.

Are you a parent? Do something unexpected for your children. At breakfast or dinner do something silly; “draw” hearts on their plates with ketchup or write “I love you” in chocolate syrup on their ice cream or cake. Yes, you run the risk that they will tell you it’s corny, but what you’ll

For family members, instead of the standard card giving, share some family love across the country with a conference call. If your family is local, keep “the ties that bind” with an impromptu potluck or dessert party.

Your sister-friends and male friends usually have the least expectations of receiving acknowledgement on Valentine’s Day. Not because they don’t think you care but like you, they may be addressing their own Valentine’s Day issues. Give them a gift that is one of the best and easiest

to give; just pick up the phone and say, “Happy Valentine’s Day, I love you my friend.” Or whatever message of love and support you would like to convey.

As for those of you who are reading this but feel blue because you are afraid that no one will acknowledge you on Valentine’s Day, please allow me — Happy Valentine’s Day! See you next week.

“The Parker Sisters: A Border Kidnapping” REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

our neighbors said they’d keep an eye on your house for you this summer.

They’d get the mail in, and grab the newspaper while you were on vacation. They’d do everything for you – and, as in the new book “The Parker Sisters”

by Lucy Maddox, you should be glad if they watch your children, too.

Along the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland, Thomas McCreary “earned a reputation” as slave catcher, did jail time in 1849 for kidnapping, and was mistrusted by many, Black and white. Still, he’d managed to find work as a mail carrier in both states, which

may’ve given him opportunity to observe the comings-and-goings of Elizabeth and Rachel Parker, two free Black children.

Elizabeth, somewhere around 10 years old, was a headstrong, “difficult” child who’d left (or been kicked out of) her family’s home years before and had worked and lived with a series of white families. The latest was near-destitute; Maddox hypothesizes that Elizabeth’s presence in the Donnelly household may have been on purpose, so that McCreary might have an easier chance to snatch her.

Two weeks later, Elizabeth’s older sister, Rachel, was taken in broad

daylight, right in front of the family who employed her. Rachel’s abduction, says Maddox, probably made neighbors notice that Elizabeth, who was already on her way to a slave auction in Baltimore, was gone.

The man who employed Rachel, Joseph Miller, was outraged over her kidnapping. There had been similar trouble before nearby; the Federal government and individual states had long argued over the laws governing escaped slaves, free Blacks, and slave catchers who generally lied about both. Miller and his neighbors sprang into action and, says Maddox, “Within twenty-four hours, the

abductions of the Parker sisters would no longer be local matters.”

Neither would they be resolved happily or quickly.

Says author Lucy Maddox, Rachel and Elizabeth spent months in jail, while their legal status and identities were resolved. In the meantime, one man lost his life and another got off “scotfree.”

I’m normally not a fan of books that offer dozens of names to keep track of, but that profuseness somehow works in “The Parker Sisters.”

That may be because Maddox explains in detail the significance of what happened by telling the history behind the laws that made this event possible (and illegal). Readers will

by Lucy Maddox appreciate the story’s movement between North and South, and the clarity of explanation, even on the smallest of details. There are some big surprises in here, too – particularly in what happened to Elizabeth Parker.

On the matter of murder, Maddox is rather like a detective, which is another well-done aspect of this book. Officials tried to explain the death as a suicide, but she walks readers through events and clues to prove otherwise.

Despite all that’s appealing, and because it’s packed with a lot, this isn’t an easy book to read – but it’s worth it. If you’re a lover of a good tale or a historian, par-

ticularly, “The Parker Sisters” is a book you’ll want to keep your eyes on.

“With this kind of brush, you can actually improve gum health by gently messaging them, which stimulates blood flow to the area,” Vanstrom says. “I’m seeing more patients suffer from gum recession and disease at a younger age, including some in their 30s and 20s. That’s why it’s important to implement good habits when kids are young!”

• Avoid a negative stigma toward oral hygiene. “Another bad legacy parents sometimes impart to their children is to put a stigma on brushing,” he

says. “In many homes brushing is considered a chore, probably because parents see it that way.”

An easy way to take the work out of oral hygiene is to have easy-to-use products that feel good. Fun products that are visually stimulating are good for smaller children, who are usually more prone to making a game out of brushing and flossing time. There are other products on the market that make flossing easier.

• Be mindful of the development of casual bad habits. For many, especially children, it’s easy to develop bad oral habits – thumb-sucking, nail-biting, straw-chewing, ice-crunching and teeth-grinding, to name some. And, because they’re

not as strong as adults, children may be prone to using their teeth to open plastic bags and such. Of course, the habits of our childhood often stay with us in adulthood, so lead first by example, and make sure your child doesn’t pick up these habits on their own or through someone else.

tate Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/ Westchester), The Bronx Chamber of Commerce and Bronx Community Board #2 hosted a successful interview fair with Baldor Specialty Foods on Friday at The Hunts Point Recreational Center. Nearly 100 job seekers attended the fair and interviewed for 120 positions in divisions such as human resources, accounting, driving, customer service, and more.

“I am happy to partner with businesses, such as Baldor Specialty Foods, to identify new job openings and connect local residents with these employment opportunities,” said Senator Klein.

“Tonight we experienced an amazing turnout in a focused environment and our skilled workforce had very successful interviews. Bronx H.I.R.E. job seekers have gone through aptitude testing, participated in resume writing classes, at-

tended interview skill workshops, and received other workforce development assistance.”

“The Bronx Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner with Senator Jeff Klein’s Bronx H.I.R.E. program and work with businesses to identify job openings and connect local residents with available jobs such as today’s Baldor Specialty Foods Interview Fair. The Bronx Chamber will continue to spearhead local job fairs

Adams Joined with other legislators on New Bill to set aside Space in Public Buildings for Mothers to Nurse or Breastfeed Earlier this month, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and Council Members Robert E. Cornegy, Jr., Laurie A. Cumbo, and Corey Johnson joined forces to introduce legislation that would require the City to create dedicated space for nursing moms in municipal government offices that serve the public. Should Intro 1063-2016 become law, New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) job centers and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) offices, New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) borough offices, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) facilities, and other public-facing locations associated with City agencies will be outfitted with private, non-bathroom spaces where mothers can relax and nurse their babies or pump milk, should they so choose.

Member Cornegy’s Bedford-Stuyvesant district office at Restoration Plaza opened in 2014, and the ribbon on the “lactation lounge” at Brooklyn Borough Hall was cut by Borough President Adams the following year “We should do all we can to support mothers who choose to have a private space to nurse their child, understanding that breastfeeding is a critical component to promote overall public health,” said Borough President Adams.

“As Chair of the Women’s Issues Committee, I would like to acknowledge the incredible women throughout this city and beyond that unequivocally breastfeed their children anytime and anyplace,” said Council Member Cumbo, chair of the Committee on Women’s Issues. “This is a personal decision for every woman, which ought to be respected within our society. This legislation will create additional safe spaces for nursing mothers to feed and care for their child(ren) without public scrutiny.”

“As far as I’m concerned, mothers have the right to care for their child wherever and whenever they need to,” said Council Member Johnson, chair of the Committee on Health.

BP KATZ’S PARENT ADVISORY BOARD TO DISCUSS COLLEGE ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID

he Queens Parent Advisory Board, chaired

by Borough President Melinda Katz, will meet on Thursday, February 25 to discuss “The College Admissions Process and How to Fund Your Child’s College Education.”

“Applying for colleges can be complicated for both students and parents, and higher education has become more and more expensive so we need to make sure parents and students have the information

they need to make appropriate decisions about their futures,” Queens Borough President KATZ said.

“Our next Parent Advisory Board meeting will help clarify the college admissions process for parents, and offer guidance on how their kids can apply for grants, scholarships and other forms of financial aid that can help cover the cost of attending college.”

The Parent Advisory Board meeting will feature presentations by:

• Officials from the State University of New York (SUNY) and the City University of New York (CUNY) about the admissions process and their scholarship, grants and financial aid programs such as the Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK) program and the Equal Opportunity Program; •Representative from the Foundation Center about their online database of scholarships and grants available to

students who may not qualify for financial aid; and •Representative from the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation about Governor Andrew Cuomo’s “529 College Savings Plan” and his new “Get On Your Feet” Loan Forgiveness Program, which offers up to 24 months of federal student loan debt relief to recent college graduates living in New York State.
