GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE Holiday Lights now grace the streets of New York marking the kick off of the Christmas holiday season and decorations. Of course Fifth Avenue retailers show off the most elaborate window displays.

However, the 125th Street BID started the tradition of dressing 125th Streets with holiday lights several years ago. The street is lit with a parade of decorated vehicles in the evening. During the day there are activities at different retail and restaurant locations throughout the day. (see page 12) Congratulations to Journalist Audrey J. Bernard who was honored at Lincoln Center Club Dizzy this past weekend.

n November 20, 2015, The Greater New York Chapter of the Links Incorporated, Health & Human Services with the Community Partnership; AARP, Steinway Children & Family Services, Esplanade Gardens NORC, The Carter Burden Lenard Covelo Senior Center, Health Advocates for Older People, Alzheimer’s Association, NYC Chapter, Harlem Advocates for Seniors and the New York Foundation for Seniors sponsored the forum, “Revitalizing Your Home, Beautiful Living for the Second Half of Your Life”. The seminar discussed how to adapt your home for your retirement years. Topics included home

safety assessments, kitchen safety and special lighting for seniors’ homes.

Rosemary Bakker, certified interior designer and gerontologist, discussed great decorating ideas for aging in place. She focused on how to arrange, modify and simplify your home for your greatest ease and enjoyment. She discussed the best choices for furniture, mattresses, lighting and floor coverings. Ms. Bakker is the Living Comfortably and Safely at Home Coordinator for Health Advocates for Older People. During the last 15 years, Ms. Bakker has assumed a leading role in promoting the role of the environment and smart technologies to optimize the health, function and well-being of the

As an example, she asked us all to think about how many ‘cute’ coffee mugs we own and then to think about the reality of how many of

them we actually use – if we got rid of all but two or three, we could have a lot more space. The options for the things we are parting with are many; donations to churches or shelters provide tax deductions, flea markets and/or Craigslist could provide much needed cash.

Welcomed by Dr. Marcella Maxwell, Deborah Whitfield from the Links, Inc. and Nancy Houghton, Health Advocates for Older People, the forum was hosted by Brookdale Ctr. on Healthy Aging, Hunter College/CUNY. Seniors attended from Esplanade Gardens NORC, Leonard Covelo Senior Center, Central Harlem Senior Services, Brown Gardens and Dyckman Houses. There was a lively question and answer discussion and everyone was treated to a delicious pre-Thanksgiving luncheon!

Spearheaded by the GNY Links, the Community Partnership Educational Seminars are designed to inform and empower seniors to recognize and cope with the complexities, causes and symptoms related to elder abuse and healthcare in the greater Harlem Community and Chinatown. Their primary objective is to target community-based elder African American, Caribbean, Latino and Asian women and men, ages fifty-five plus whose health and well-being might be compromised by domestic violence and health complexities as they find themselves aging with diminishing support and access to services.

an anyone afford to buy a home in Harlem? This question continues to be the topic of conversation among prospective first time home buyers. Although we have been discussing this issue for quite some time, there still does not appear to be an acceptable answer.

What are low to moderate income families to do in the midst of this housing crisis? They want to remain in their beloved Harlem community, but are being price out of the market. This reality is leaving them with no option except to either buyer a smaller, more affordable unit based on their income or move out of the city. They are tired of making their landlord rich. But positioning themselves to become first time home buyers is

New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) offers a grant program to eligible first time buyers. However, the tight income stipulations will exclude many low to moderate buyers from taking advantage of this program. To further complicate matters, the Housing Development Fund Corporation (HDFC) cooperatives are still the most affordable units in Harlem. But now the challenge is finding a

You often hear people say ‘I wish it could be Christmas every day.’ Well, Christmas is every day in the year when we understand its true meaning. Christmas represents the spiritual rebirth, or the birth of the Christ in each one of us. Christmas Day is December 25th on the calendar. But Christmas is the awakening of the spirit of lovingness and givingness in the heart. So, any day can be Christmas…in the heart. Each day can be the beginning of a new year and a new life of spiritual awareness.

The beauty of the Christmas story is that we don’t have to have regrets, because we are offered the opportunity to begin anew, to enter into a new life, to be mentally and spiritually reborn. Please affirm: ‘Today I have a new beginning. I am

reborn.’

I like to think of Christmas as signifying a new birth for all individuals – a beginning again. Even though it is nearly 2,000 years since Jesus the Christ was born in Bethlehem, this same Christ is born daily in our

hearts. This is the eternal, changeless Christ. Just as the Wise Men followed the star in the East to the baby who was laid in the manger, there is right within us the wise thoughts that lead us as divine Wisdom or Intuition to the place where

t is Christmas time again, looks like 2015 is slipping swiftly away and a new year is close at hand. Right about now shopping, shopping, shopping is on everyone’s mind.

What do I give and where do I go to get it?

There is no shortage of high tech gizmos. Anything and everything imaginable has come to fruition. Smartphones are not just smart, they are hand-held wizards. Drones and hover boards are leaping off store shelves.

Credit cards are dipped, slid or tapped and the deed is done.

A bunch of people will be paying to the piper for months after their shopping sprees.

Some folk chose to shop at home from their favorite chair.

Online shopping channels QVC and HSN are mesmerizing with discounts and flex pay options. Too comfortable can be a 10

dangerous thing when money is spent easily from a warm cozy setting. Simply place the order, decide your choice payment plan, then sit back and wait for delivery day. You can send the present in holiday wrap, if you so choose. How easy is that? So easy that you may get comfortably distracted and overspend.

What a rude awakening that can be when the bill arrives.

Sadly, gift giving is often not a sentimental journey, but a burdensome act.

Not only have prices multiplied sky high, the number of gifts presented is critically reviewed. One package, no matter how beautifully wrapped can be considered less than ample gifting. Is that all there is, might be in question.

Embarrassment, even shame is often part of the equation when the giver feels they have not given sufficiently after two or three presents are received from the same person. In many households and relationships, Christmas is a competition based on who gets the most. Who are you trying to impress?

It is Christmas; the name encompasses the reason for the season. For Christians it is remembering the

love of God through the gift of his only son who came to give us life more abundantly.

Somehow the great gift became a source of world-wide commercialization that has created debt and disappointment for a multitude of people, essentially, the have nots.

Gifting is serious and should not be taken lightly. Generosity may be sweet at a great cost. Careful you don’t get financially out of control.

Spending can be short changed if you focus on what you have in your hand. You may not have much, but it can be memorable.

Forty years ago my

mother purchased a set of silver bracelets.

I loved the swirl of silver in the detailed design.

She loved them and wore them constantly. One day, my mother prayed over the bracelets and placed them on my wrist. Through the years, I prayed as I wore them. They held a special place in my heart right up to the day my mother passed.

One evening at a mid-week worship service at the Abyssinian Baptist Church, a thought popped out like a bolt from the blue. I remembered what my mother said, “Give something you love to somebody.

Before you give it, pray for them.” I understood the purpose of the bracelets was for me to pass on the blessing.

I made my way down the aisle and gifted one bracelet. The person was surprised, yet humbly accepted. I said, “Whenever you look at this bracelet, remember someone prayed for you.”

I am happy to see she wears the bracelet and I am honored that by her choice, she lets me know. I pray for her.

In 2014, I worked with a youth assistant, Jada Harper, well mannered, smart, pretty and patient

with a spirit of joy and helping hands.

Jada is a God-conscious young woman in college now. She is the recipient of my mother’s last bracelet.

I am praying for her.

Christmas is a symbol of giving with a special meaning. You can be a symbol of blessing by giving a gift that is more than a gesture of expectation. Be blessed beloved, make it a Merry Christmas.

Macy’s Herald Square Spreads Holiday Spirit to Kids at 65th Annual Operation Happy Children

EW YORK, NY – December 1, 2015 – Christmas arrived early for nearly 300 children from across the city at the 65th annual Macy’s Operation Happy Children at the Macy’s Herald Square store last Tuesday.

The store opened its doors early to welcome the pre-school age children to a magical morning that started with a special private breakfast filled with lively holiday songs sung by Stephanie Marie Hanvey and spun by DJ Blaze. From there, Macy’s volunteers donning elf hats led the children to the magical Christmas wonderland of Macy’s Santaland®. Once inside, their eyes lit up as they gazed at the twinkling lights, colorful Christmas trees, and

festive holiday décor before their visit with the one-andonly Santa Claus. Each child received a toy and book of their choice from Santa Claus and they received an exclusive Macy’s Snoopy plush toy, winter hat and a lunch to take with them.

This year marked the 65th year that Macy’s has helped spread the holiday cheer to underserved children from New York City’s five boroughs. The store partnered with the New York City Department of Homeless Services and the Hispanic Federation to invite children from 15 social services programs that provide transitional housing, foster care, help for domestic violence survivors, and other family programs.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for these children to take part in,” said Diana Caba, Director of Economic Empowerment for the Hispanic Federation, a network of social services nonprofits that work to uplift families in Hispanic communities. “This is something that they probably wouldn’t get to do. A lot of these children are from families that aren’t leaving their neighborhoods and wouldn’t be specifically seeking out Santa Claus.

Team captain Cathy Anderson, who remembers the time when former Mayor David Dinkins attended the event, has been volunteering with Operation Happy Children for 20 years. “It’s such a blessing to see these kids – to see their joy and happiness,” said Anderson, who works in the marketing department, and led the children to the Santaland® line. “Everyone deserves happiness.”

At the end of the event, Macy’s associate and 12-year volunteer Florence Fitzpatrick hand out boxed lunches for the children to take with them as they boarded their buses or headed home. “This time of year, it’s just a great feeling to be giving back…I know on Christmas that these children can open their presents and say that they have a Christmas gift and that Macy’s cared enough to give back. This is what makes me love what I do.”

The 5-week engagement at New York City Center continues this week with new productions of Ailey classics Cry and Love Songs on Tuesday, December 8th.

If you don’t stand at work, I’m sure you know plenty of people who do and are familiar with their health complaints – sore and swollen feet and legs, tired muscles, low back pain and achy necks and shoulders, among many others.

The feet, legs, back and neck hold the body in an upright position and suffer the most when one stands on the job. The feet are particularly vulnerable; swelling, achiness, calluses, bunions, corns, fallen arches (flat

feet), pain in the arches (a symptom of plantar fasciitis), varicose veins, sprains and athlete’s foot are common. Work stations designed to ease the effects of standing are great, but not used everywhere: just ask a retail salesperson, security guard or factory worker.

What can workers do to alleviate some of the foot problems and injuries common in occupations that require standing? We (I include myself – doctors stand a lot) can all try to protect our feet and legs with the proper shoes and hosiery.

• Shoes have to fit well from the moment you try them on. Shop in the late afternoon or evening when feet are at their maximum size.

• Make sure you can wiggle your toes and that the shoe grips your heel firmly. The shoe should support your arch.

MMR Vaccine and African American Males

few weeks ago, while doing research on an article about the health risk of the Flu vaccine that contained Thimerosel , (see www.theartofwarogers.info) I came across alarming research showing evidence that African American males who received the MMR vaccine for Measles and Mumps before 36 months of age had a 340% increase risk of having Autism.

This information was kept in rap, it

got pass my radar. It seems that on August 27th 2014 Dr. William W. Thompson, Ph.D a Senior Scientist with the Centers for Disease Control gave a press conference where he revealed that scientist at CDC had knowledge of evidence of an alarming rate of autism cases in children receiving the MMR vaccine before reaching three years of age.

According to documents provided by Dr. Thompson to independent researchers evidence that the rate of autism cases in African American males who received the

MMR vaccine before reaching 36 months was two to three times greater than any other groups researched; was known as early as 2003.

It might seem strange that the CDC would keep this research buried for 12 years. Not so strange if you remember that the CDC, which was created in the early 1960s only revealed the Tuskegee Syphilis Study in 1972.

The Tuskegee Syphilis Study began in 1932 when 339 African American men took part in a study that focused on the results of untreated

syphilis. The study was conducted by the Public Health Service (later to become CDC).

A CDC scientist leaked the syphilis study to the press, and a New York Times story on July 23, 1972 became one of many articles that forced the CDC to terminate the study.

Most of the 339 Black men who participated in the study had died but their wives and children were also infected over a 40-year period.

The evidence provided to congress by Dr. Thompson connecting autism with

early MMR vaccinations to African American males is now public record.

The important thing to remember is if you or someone close to you is expecting a child, especially an African American male child, research now provides evidence that MMR vaccinations before 36 months is not recommended. I advise expecting parents to do your research.

t is, without a doubt, that time of the year again.

No it isn’t tax time, but with all that has to be done, it can be a taxing time. There are crowds of people to contend with wherever you go. There are traffic jams, long lines and people with frayed nerves. Ah, but it is also a season of reflection, celebration, a time to rejoice and feel good and a time to be with family and friends.

Then there are an endless number of parties and a chance to eat, drink (responsibly) and be merry.

In spite of the commercialization, it is one of the

few times when you can still count on seeing the delight and awe of the season through the eyes of a young child. It is a time when memories are made.

Everything sparkles. The twinkling lights on the Christmas tree, the gleaming ornaments, shimmering tinsel, glistening icicles and swirls of Angel’s Hair. I still love sitting in a darkened room with just the mesmerizing lights of the Christmas tree for company! The scent of pine needles, cinnamon, nutmeg, sage, linger in the air. Remember the sweet taste of ribbon candy, candy canes, fudge, pumpkin bread, fruit cake, Christmas cookies and other goodies?

Yes, it is possible to close your eyes and recall the moments as vividly as when

they occurred. It is . . . a wonderful time of the year.

It is also a very expensive time of the year.

For some it’s an excuse . . . to over-spend . . . over-extend . . . over indulge. But wait. There is a chance to put everything into perspective! Before you step out the door to go shopping consider these suggestions: • Create a budget.

What???? You say? That’s right put a cap on it, and stick to it.

• Leave the credit cards at home. If you don’t have the money to pay for it, then you are spending too much already. Forget about the mileage points and other incentives, think instead about the high interest rates that you’re charged and the fact that over time, you could

eventually pay more than double for those gifts!

• You know the checks that the credit card companies send? Shred them.

• How much is too much?

Well, it depends on your circumstances, but there are plenty of people who are more than able to spend to their little heart’s content, but don’t. They also have more to do with their money than to blow large sums just because it’s the holiday season.

• Make a list . . . and check it twice. Do you really have to buy for everyone? I think not. How important is it to have thirty people on your list? Surely you can whittle it down to a precious few.

• Why are you buying?

Feeling guilty? Don’t.

• Consider making gifts.

No, it isn’t corny. Shopping isn’t a talent, creating something with your talent is.

• Give the gift of time and service. Think about what you can do to help someone with something.

• Don’t pooh-pooh gift cards. Face it. Some folks are just hard to buy for . . .

• Be creative. Set a dollar amount and challenge friends and family members to find the perfect gift within that range. The smaller the amount, the greater the challenge, but the goal is really to surprise your recipient by presenting a thoughtful present.

It is possible to enjoy the holiday season without going into debt. What counts are the meaningful moments spent with people you love.

Long after the gifts have been unwrapped . . . the only one’s still thanking you will

be the credit card companies.

You can be as creative as the card companies are in encouraging you to incur debt to stay out of it. Think about it. See you next week.

C

hestnuts roasting on an open fire seem so cozy.

Just humming that tune warms you up, right? Roaring flames on hearth or sand always seem welcoming, even romantic – except when they go out of control. And as for the person who puts out a fire like that, as you’ll see in “Firefight” by Ginger Adams Otis, flames aren’t all they battle.

Sometimes, the fight runs deeper, as Wesley Williams learned on January 10, 1919.

That was the day Williams left his young family in their Bronx apartment to report to his new job as New York City’s first (according to newspapers) black firefighter. It was

a 45-minute ride to Little Italy, and he knew he could never be late.

What he faced that day, and for months, wasn’t what he hoped to get from the job.

He’d receive a $1,500-a-year salary and benefits of which few black men would dare to dream. He also received discrimination, subtly and overtly, but Williams persevered and thrived: in later years, he worked his way up to battalion chief.

That was no easy feat for an African American man in early-to-mid 1900s America.

Though black citizens represented a good part of New York City’s population, black “smoke eaters” were few in both police

and fire departments; often, just three percent of the entire department. Early-on, they had little security or clout, which is why Williams formed the Vulcans, a fraternal order for African American firefighters, in 1938. Still, Jim Crow hazing, testing biases, and lack of urgency in City Hall kept many potential African American recruits from the FDNY. Some 80 years after Wesley Williams became a firefighter, the situation was different, but similar: racism lurked quietly in pockets of the FDNY, testing continued to be a thorny issue, and there was still a disparity in numbers for “Bravest” African Americans. The Vulcans had long lobbied for change,

with limited success and so, post-9/11, they took a drastic and controversial step…

In a way, I saw “Firefight” as two distinct books in one.

First, readers may be shocked to learn of the racial imbalance perpetuated in such a large and esteemed department in one of our largest cities, and what had to be done to set things right. That account of modern-day struggles is how author Ginger Adams Otis kicks her book off, and though she winds recent happenings nicely around that of the past, the many names and legal skirmishes can become overwhelming for readers outside New York.

Fortunately, the history of New York firefighting and the decades-old story of Wesley

Williams comprise the other half of this book, and the latter is compelling. It weaves through Otis’ account of the present and tempers it; indeed, if your mind wanders, it’ll snap back when Williams’ name appears again.

Fire buffs in particular will appreciate this book, as will anyone who loves a peek into the past with a dash of excite-

ment. Yes, part of it may be a challenge to follow but the other half of “Firefight” will inflame you.

ast week Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams hosted his Annual Interfaith Breakfast at Brooklyn Borough Hall to highlight the multi-faith diversity of Brooklyn, and present some of the longest-serving clergy leaders in

To do so, Borough President Adams launched his “Seeds of Kindness” campaign, which is designed to help empower our most vulnerable Brooklynites by helping them reach a level of independence.

Building off the results of a 2015 Harvard report that found that the lack of adequate transportation hinders social mobility, Borough President Adams called upon members of communities of faith to provide donations of weekly and monthly MetroCards to the “Seeds of Kindness” campaign, in order to ensure families and individuals can have access to mass transit. Doing so would make certain that they are able to connect to

the referral appointments, which are important steps to obtaining housing, employment, and needed benefits in an effort to improve their social mobility and reduce poverty in the borough.

“These generous donations of MetroCards can be the gift that creates new opportunities, such as connecting people to seasonal employment during the holidays and beyond. Access to affordable transit is one of the most certain ways to improve social mobility,” says Veronica Vanterpool, executive director of the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a non-profit policy watchdog.

The breakfast was opened with prayers from faith leaders across the borough, including Rabbi Andy Bachman, Reverend Richard Beaty, Pastor

Amy Kienzle, Pastor Michael Turner Lewis, Guru Dileepji Maharaj, Imam Ibrahim Sen, and Bhupinder Singh.

The breakfast was highlighted by performances by The Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir (BIC) and a reading of the famous Hafiz poem, “I Have Learned So Much” by artist Vishavjit Singh.

“We, the Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir (BIC), were indeed blessed by being included in BP Adams’s Annual Interfaith Breakfast on December 3,” said Frank A. Haye, Artistic Director & Founder of The Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir. “We believe the power of music transcends our cultural, political, financial, and religious differences to expose that which we truly share: faith, hope, and love.”

The breakfast was held a day following the tragic mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, and many of Borough President Adams’s comments emphasized the healing power of faith for those who are hurting inside.

Mayor DeBlasio and Queens Officials Break Ground on Hunter’s Point South Phase II

be developed by the City’s Department of Housing, Preservation and Development. The NYC Economic Development Corporation’s construction of the phase II infrastructure, roadways, and waterfront park is expected to be completed in 2018.

Housing construction will commence immediately thereafter.

“We’re building a new neighborhood from the ground-up, from its streets to its parks to its transit. This is going to be the biggest affordable housing project built in a generation, and it’s going to ensure that this corner of Queens – despite all the market pressures driving up rents – will remain a diverse place for working people,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The groundbreaking is great news for the current and future residents of Long Island City. This $100 million investment into building new streets, sewer lines, infrastructure upgrades, as well as the expansion of Hunters Point South Park, will ensure all Long Island City residents have the quality of life they deserve. We must build multiple new schools and more affordable housing units in addition to those built here already to make sure

we have all of the services families need to thrive,” said Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer.

“The Phase II of Hunters Point South will not only provide additional units of affordable housing in Western Queens but will also include open space for much needed schools” said Assembly Member Catherine Nolan. “As our community continues to grow these improvements to the current infrastructure are much needed.”

“The rapid development of Long Island City has priced too many of our neighbors who helped make our community so desirable out of their own neighborhoods,” said State Senator Michael Gianaris. “Today’s announcement renews our commitment to maintaining the character of our community by keeping it from being affordable only for the wealthy.”

“This administration is committed to creating strong, livable neighborhoods where all New Yorkers have the opportunity to succeed and support their families,” said NYCEDC President Maria Torres-Springer. “New York City has not seen an affordable housing development like Hunter’s Point South

Hunter’s Point South is a massive, multiphase project. The Phase I infrastructure, roadways, and waterfront park was completed by NYCEDC in August 2013, and will support mixed-use developments totaling more than 2,000 housing units. The park includes a central green, a playground, a waterside promenade and additional recreation space, as well as a 13,000-square-foot pavilion housing comfort stations, concessions, an elevated café pla-

za, and a maintenance facility for the Department of Parks and Recreation.

The Hunter’s Point South project has led to the creation of 3,400 linear feet of new roadways that are now open to the public. The infrastructure, roadway, and park design was led by Arup, which served as the project’s prime consultant and lead engineer. Landscape architecture firm Thomas Balsley Associates and architecture firm Weiss/Manfredi designed the park. The design was driven by a commitment to creating a vibrant recreational environment for New Yorkers and visitors while adhering to principles of sustainability.

These include the pursuit of alternative transportation options, such as the inclusion of a protected bikeway, introduction of a bioswale along the length of the park, extensive planting of native species of grasses and trees, use of environmentally sustainable wood, the remediation of formerly contaminated industrial areas, and the solar orientation of the site and comfort station to optimize passive heating and cooling, and solar energy generation.

ast month, Mayor Bill de Blasio broke ground on a new infrastructure for the largest new housing complex built in New York City in nearly 40 years, and the largest affordable housing construction project to date under the Housing New York plan. Phase II of Hunter’s Point South will create nearly 3,000 new apartments, at least 60 percent of which will be affordable to low-, moderate-, and middle-income families. Between phases I and II, Hunter’s Point South will build 5,000 new apartments.

The groundbreaking marks the commencement of work on vital infrastructure at the Hunter’s Point South site, consisting of a new street network with sewers, water main and utility work, as well as the new 11-acre waterfront park. The site will include 100,000 square feet of retail space as well as new community facility space. And the new citywide ferry system launching in 2017 will link the neighborhood directly to the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan.
