Attractions Not to Miss!

Spend the morning in Potomac Park (adjacent to the National Mall) visiting the sites that have special meaning for you, whether it’s the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial or the Washington Monument. Of course, there’s no lovelier spot in Washington than the steps of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. But, in marked contrast to all this grandeur, The Korean War Veterans Memorial has the most human and haunting scale of all—a squad of 19 men on wary ground patrol.

MEMORIAL is in West Potomac Park along the Tidal Basin. This expansive tribute to the nation’s 32nd president comprises five separate sections covering the four terms and 12 years (1933-45) FDR served. The outdoor «rooms» create an atmosphere that is a more secluded garden than an imposing monument. The Prologue Room contains a 10-foot statue of Roosevelt in a wheelchair, depicting the physical disability that inspired the man’s leadership. Room One focuses on FDR’s early presidential years. Sculptural groups in Room Two include a bread line— underscoring both the literal and figurative hunger many Americans experienced during the Depression years. In-Room

KOREAN WAR VETERANS

MEMORIAL is near the Lincoln Memorial. It was erected in gratitude to the 1.5 million American military personnel served in Korea from 1950 to 1953. The most striking aspect is the Field of Service, a group of stainless-steel statues depicting a squad of American soldiers on ground patrol. It is the 19 poncho-clad soldiers— representing the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marines, and Navy and different ethnic backgrounds—that convey a feeling of wariness and the unknown.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL is aligned with the United States Capitol and the Washington Monument. It honors a man whose personal life was marked by tragedy and disappointment, even as he led the nation through its greatest test, the Civil War. This stately structure is supported by 36 massive Doric columns representing the states in the Union at Lincoln’s death. Dominating the interior is a colossal, seated statue of Lincoln, carved from 28 blocks of Georgia marble. Two of Lincoln’s famous speeches—the eloquent Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address—are carved on the south and north walls. Looking east toward the Washington Monument from the top of the memorial steps, the expansive panorama takes in the 2,128-footlong Reflecting Pool.

MEMORIAL is on the Tidal Basin at W. Basin Dr. The memorial preserves the memory of faith leader and advocate for social justice Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The memorial’s design is based on a line from Dr. King’s «I Have a Dream» speech—»Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.» The focal point is an inspiring sculpture of Dr. King. His imposing frame emerges from the Stone of Hope, which stands 28 feet, 6 inches tall. Its position, facing the Tidal Basin, reinforces the advancement of opportunities King so tirelessly fought for. Inscriptions on the walls emphasize Dr. King’s four primary messages: justice, democracy, hope, and love.

GREAT MEADOW

A Dupont Circle standout is Obelisk. Dinner is a fixed-price, five-course affair that begins with an assortment of small plates. from the White House for American fare. Clyde’s is a neighborhood institution. The Old Ebbitt Grill is a favorite with journalists, political insiders, and tourists. The ambiance in both places is turn of the 20th century: mahogany and velvet booths. Old Ebbitt’s raw bar is one of the best in the District, with an extensive selection of oysters.

When it’s warm enough to sit outside, summer- or any day—is the time to visit Cafe du Parc in The Willard InterContinental hotel. The sun-dappled sidewalk tables with a view of Pershing Park are as close as you’re going to get to a Parisian bistro in Washington. Plus, a delightful spot to linger over a breakfast of croissants, pain au chocolat, and freshly brewed Illy coffee.

Italian or Ethiopian eateries in Penn Quarter, just north of the National Mall, have various restaurant options. Fiola is one of the most popular. Both elegant and rustic rosewood tables specialize in rich, indulgent Italian cooking. You cannot go wrong with classics like lobster ravioli or a Wagyu beef ribeye.

Washington has lots of Ethiopian eateries, and one we like is Ethiopic Restaurant. The vegetable sampler includes scoops of curried potatoes, lentils, collard greens, and other veggies. Tender cubes of beef sautéed in butter and simmered in fiery berbere sauce are guaranteed to break a sweat.

Indian Cuisine is a Washington favorite. Many consider Rasika to be DC’s best Indian restaurant. The palak chaat appetizer—fried baby spinach leaves with yogurt, tamarind, and date chutney—earns raves, as does black cod marinated in honey, dill, star anise, and red wine vinegar.

For Spanish, it’s Jaleo which sticks to what it does best—tapas. You’d expect the gazpacho to be excellent here, and it is.

For Burgers or Pizza, try ultra-casual Capitol Hill hot spot Good Stuff Eatery. The menu emphasizes «handcrafted burgers,» and Spike’s Sunnyside—topped with Applewood bacon and a fried egg on a brioche bun—is a good place to start.

Ben’s Chili Bowl has been a DC institution serving loyal customers for decades. The chili dog, a half-smoke in a warm steamed bun topped with mustard, onions, and homemade chili sauce, is a signature item.

If you’re headed to the Virginia side of the Metro area, you’ll also find a wide array of choices in every food category.

For award-winning Greek fare, Tavern Cretekou in Old Town cannot be topped. The inviting décor, festive atmosphere, and authentic Greek menu will transport you to the Greek Isles. This place is as real as it gets, One of the most relaxing and peaceful patios when weather permits.

Just west of Old Town is Tempo Restaurant, one of the area’s best-kept secrets.

This elegant but unpretentious neighborhood restaurant is where the locals dine. Tempo menu displays a blend of northern Italian and French cuisine, featuring fresh seafood. Specialties include Linguini Vongale, Sole Almondine, and dessert delicacies.

And suppose you’re interested in spending a pleasant, enjoyable afternoon on the Occoquan River. In that case, you need to head south to Harbour Grille on the river. A great place for simple fare or a wellprepared seafood dinner.  Enjoy a cocktail at the bar or on the huge patio, all served by a friendly and accommodating staff.
