Earlier this week I watched the 911 Memorial service on tv. As I listened to the names of those who lost their lives on that day and saw their faces, I am reminded - “every day of life is a gift.” Most of those people walked out of their homes and went to work with plans. They had plans for lunch, plans for dinner, plans for the weekend and plans for their future. Thank you God for the gift of this day and may I honor you by making my life a blessing for my family, my community and the world.

Nia Franklin Wins Miss America T

he genius, intelligence, beauty and spirit of Black women, which continues to transform the world, shined brightly again Sunday as Nia Franklin became the first Miss America in the post-swimsuit era.

“It took a lot of perseverance to get here,” Franklin, the freshly crowned beauty queen, said after her win. “I want to thank my beautiful family, my mom and my dad, who is a survivor of cancer.”

An opera singer, Franklin is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and earned her master’s degree in music composi-

tion from UNC School of the Arts, according to her biography as reported by CNN. She moved to New York after being accepted at the Kenan Fellow program at Lincoln Center Education in Manhattan.

During the competition, Franklin described how music helped her find her identity.

“I grew up at a predominately Caucasian school that was only five percent minority, and I felt out of place so much because of the color of my skin,” Franklin said. “But growing up, I found my love of arts, and through music that helped me to feel positive about myself and

about who I was.”

Her win set Twitter and all of social media ablaze.

“Congratulations to our new Miss America,” famed radio and television personality Donnie Simpson said. “Nia Franklin represented New York and won the crown last night. She’s obviously very smart, very talented and absolutely stunning. I’m so proud.”

Another popular radio show host, Michael Lyle, Jr., also couldn’t contain his joy for Franklin.

“Huge congratulations.

Well-deserved and another reason why Black Girls Rock,” Lyle said.

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper

Publishers Association – the trade organization that represents 220 African American-owned newspapers across the country – said Franklin’s win is just another statement on the outstanding achievements of Black women today.

Franklin, who plans to advocate for the arts during her tenure as Miss America, told reporters that she

was also happy that the swimsuit competition – which had been part of the overall contest throughout its 92-year history – had been discontinued.

“I’m happy I didn’t have to wear a swimsuit,” she said. “I’m more than just that.”

ew York City Mayor Bill De Blasio signed into Legislation the Co-Naming Fannie Pennington Way along with the full approval of N.Y. City Council and Harlem Councilman Bill Perkins and Manhattan’s Community Board 10 and the Harlem Community.

Fannie Pennington was an activist, orga-

nizer and fundraising coordinator for her childhood friend, Pastor and the United States Congressional Representative Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. at the Democratic Club and at the Abyssinian Baptist Church. She served on the Abyssinian Baptist Church Progressive Ladies Usher Board, the Welcome & Hospitality Committee & the

Courtesy Guild. She also hosted, welcomed and accommodated many Civil Rights leaders and dignitaries who visited Harlem and the church such as, Malcolm X, Moms Mabley, Rev. Jesse Jackson and Reverend/ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Fidel Castro, Mary McLeod Bethune, Emperor Hailie Selassie, Explorer Matt Henson, Ambassador/Georgia

Mayor Andrew Young, and Gil Noble. Fannie served as an usher for Abyssinian Baptist Church and Pastor Reverend Calvin Otis Butts III and loved bringing him lemonade instead of water to the pulpit.

She was employed by the New York City Board of Elections and volunteered numerous Get Out The Vote Drives. Fannie was a

lifetime member of the Alfred Isaac Democratic Club renamed as the Fred Samuel Democratic Club. In 2015 she was honored and named as an NAACP History Maker. Fannie was a trailblazer whose municipal efforts commenced from the days of the post-Harlem Renaissance era and long after. She proudly marched and organized the Harlem contingent

for the great March On Washington following in the footsteps of her beloved cousin Ella Baker the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement.

On March 11, 2013, Harlem Congressman Charles B. Rangel celebrated the life of HARLEM’S MATRIARCH Ms. Fannie Emma Pennington with a Congressional Proclamation.

he complaints about the lack of affordable housing in Harlem is getting louder every day. Yes, it is true, low to moderate income individuals and families are being priced out of the community. Many prospective first-time home buyers are starting to consider relocating to in other boroughs. The home buying process is difficult to complete under normal circumstances but with no affordable properties available it is impossible.

There are three factors to consider when you are preparing for a purchase: (1) you want to purchase property that you can comfortably afford. This means even under financial duress you will still be able to make your monthly mortgage payment. Most lenders want

you to have a minimum of 3-6 months of mortgage payment in some reserve account after closing. So, it becomes very important not to borrow more money than you can comfortably afford to repay.

(2) You must make sure the property meets your needs. If you are a family of 5, a one-bedroom apartment is too small. If you have young children, you will want a backyard or be near a park area. Other factors to take into consideration are transportation, shopping, and the quality of the schools in the neighborhood.

(3) You must consider the condition and safety of the neighborhood. The best home buying deals are usually found in distressed neighborhoods because the property values are

usually significantly below the market rate. This was the situation in about Harlem a few decades ago. You may recall the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) was trying to give these same homes away that are now going for over three million dollars!

But now the Harlem community has become much more attractive. People from all over the city are now interested in becoming homeowners in Harlem and most of them can afford to pay market value.

he 5th Annual Harlem Fashion Week (“HFW”) has completed three of its four dates of events and I couldn’t hold back any longer without telling HCN readers about them. 2018 Harlem Fashion Week runs from September 6th through September 22nd. On Thursday, September 6th the kick-off event was an Opening Night Charity Gala held at Renaissance Restaurant located at 2245 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd on the Northeast corner of 132nd Street that started at 7pm. Chef Cisse prepared some delectable and hearty appetizers that held me for the entire evening.

On Saturday, September 8th the scene moved to the Museum of the City of

New York located at 1220 5th Avenue for the three runway shows that featured 19 designers, including REBDOLLS, an international clothing brand that caters to the plus-size woman.

Three runway shows were planned at 6:15 pm, 8 pm and 9:30 pm respectively.

I attended the 6:15 pm that featured designers, Adama Paris, N/USAM, Aisha Nasa, Mansah Clothing Jyuri Lee and REBDOLLS. Adama Paris’ creations had a unique design aesthetic that reflected her African roots with a Eurocentric flare as the press release stated; she was the sea-

On Saturday, September 22nd HFW will conclude its 5th season with an Independent Fashion Industry Summit; “Individual Threads, One Fabric” at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture 515 Malcolm X Blvd. and the keynote speaker for this event is Jennifer Cunningham, senior editor of BOSSIP. The HFW events were sponsored by Harlem Tourism Board, Harlem News and the National Black MBA Association.

We need to stand up and take care of the health needs of the elderly, the overweight. I believe that we have to go out and vote on Thursday, September 13th and in November to support Obama care so that hopefully one day Obama care will be up there with Medicare and Medicaid.”

Next George Hulse introduced the panel moderator, Dr. Susan Beane, Healthfirst’s Vice President, Medical Director to begin the panel discussion and she did so by posing the following questions to the panel members, “How do we stay healthy?” and” How do we live longer

The five panel members were Dr. Anjna Ganatra; a family physician, Colette Wilson-Simpson; a nursing care manager who deals with substance misuse, abuse or addiction, Kaitrin Roberts; an Assistant District Attorney in the Manhattan DA’s office in charge of drug strategy, Dr. Keneca Boyce; a mental health and social work expert and Dr. Anthony Iorio, a podiatrist who deals with amputees.

I’ll summarize their comments into the following points: Good health begins in your home and in our communities. As a doctor I am a partner with my patients and I like to stress preventive health care such as annual screenings versus waiting until you know something is wrong.

People from all walks of life, age groups and ethnic backgrounds can be substance abusers; no one is immune. You can get hooked on prescription drugs just as you can with street drugs and you need more than will power to get off drugs that you are addicted to.

The opioid epidemic of the 21st century is getting the attention today that black and brown people thought that heroin, cocaine and crack crises should have received in the 20th century, but it didn’t because they only impacted our communities. However, the drug fentanyl is an opioid that is in cocaine, crack and fake prescription drugs today that is so fast acting, users are in a crisis that time is of the essence before they overdose.

The town hall meeting was concluded and everyone left to attend the expo across the street in the outdoor plaza of the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building where 75 vendors were under tents. There were so many screenings you could receive from head to toe, health information you could get literature obtained and there were fun games for kids too. There was a DJ and a fitness instructor that worked the young and young at heart members of the audience. Healthfirst certainly throws a health expo that sets new standards every year in the village of Harlem.

Back to School, Back to You: A Parent’s Survival Guide (Statepoint)

arenthood is a demanding and busy job, particularly during back-to-school season. With lunches to pack, homework to check, projects to oversee and activities to drive the kids to and from, it’s no wonder many parents find it challenging to squeeze in time for self-care.

But, if you want to keep up with your kids, it’s important to carve out time for healthy eating and exercise. Here are some ways to make more time for your own health, according to Courtney McCormick, dietitian for Nutrisystem.

Be an Early Riser Relish early morning peace by getting moving an hour or two before the kids start stirring. Work in your morning fitness routine, meditate to mentally prepare for the day, do yoga and prepare a healthy

breakfast. The earlier you rise, the more such daily habits you can adapt.

Schedule It Schedule exercise the same you would a trip to the doctor’s office or hair salon. If it’s on a daily task list or calendar, you’re more likely to follow through. If positive reinforcement is a good motivator for you, use fun colored markers to record your various appointments and give yourself a big check mark or smiley face when you’ve completed a workout.

Get Prepped Nothing makes mornings more chaotic than having to pack lunches while trying to get everyone out the door.

“We thought there must be a way to help alleviate some of the burden.”

Using the new companion technology, children can communicate

their emotions by tapping colorful emoji cards to a sensor on the duck’s chest. Tap an emoji with a happy expression and it responds with delighted quacking. Choose the sad face and it lowers its head and sighs. Children can mirror their care routines through a compatible web-based app, including medical play and feeding and bathing their duck via augmented reality. It also dances, quacks, and nuzzles to help distract and calm them. Its exterior can even be removed, washed and sanitized.

Creation of the comforting companion is an extension of Aflac’s 22year, $122 million commitment to childhood cancer causes. Their goal is to provide this feath-

ered friend free of charge to all newly diagnosed children, nearly 16,000 each year according to the National Cancer Institute. Distribution, targeted to begin this coming winter, will be through hospitals, and the robotic duck will not be for general consumer sale.

Jiani’s treatment, which lasted three years and included various chemotherapies, as well as countless spinal taps and antibiotics, was completed in December 2017.

“There were some tough times, but through it all, she was a champion,” says Sanchez. “Knowing tough times for other children with cancer may be made a little easier with the help of technology makes me very happy.”

s we move out of the summer months a number of people who visit the Ki Energy Wellness Center asked about ways to develop a home exercise strategy. While becoming a member of a gym is a good way to stay in shape and to meet like-minded people; it is not always easy for busy people to maintain a consistent training schedule at the local gym. Many spend a lot of money to buy exercise machines that often become dust collectors for a host of reason. Over the past few years

mini-trampolines known as rebounders have become very popular due in part to the success of a device designed by Dave Hall called a Cellerciser.

I met Dave Hall about 10 years ago at the annual New Life Wellness expo in New York. I was impressed with Dave’s presentation on cellular health. A ten minute workout out on a Cellerciser allows for weight and movement to be applied to all the cells in the body (about 75 trillion) at the same time. The vertical or up-and-down movement on the Cellerciser creates a cellular massage. Research has shown that this type of movement can increase circulation, break up blockages, open blood vessels, improve lymphatic drainage and strengthen the cell membrane.

How Much Do Your Kids Know About Money?

ith consumer debt on the rise and many failing to adequately save for the future, experts say that financial illiteracy is a major problem for Americans -- and one that communities and parents have a joint responsibility to address, starting in childhood. And right now, most children are coming up short in this area.

Over 62 percent of the 15to 18-year-olds tested by the National Financial Educators Council received either a “D” or “F” on the 2017 National Financial Literacy Test. Without intervention, these young people could grow up without the skills needed to manage credit cards, loan debt or savings goals.
