GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE!-

October was "Breast Cancer Awareness Month." During the month I reflected on my own battle with breast cancer treatment in 2017. When chemo is involved it does become a battle ground and you may be left with battle scars. I recall when my finger nails, toe nails, palms of my hands, bottom of my feet and tongue all turned jet black. Fortunately the chemo worked and did its job of killing the cancer and left me with enough good cells to carry on and be here to talk about it. Now I try to inform others of something that is not talked about a lot and that is the short term after affects of chemo. It is not just about losing your hair. The good news is that over time the color comes back in your hands and feet. I would say that everything goes back to normal but there is nothing normal about having cancer.

Being a "survivor" now becomes a part of your norm. I thank God for giving me more time.

Veterans: Show Potential Employers You Are a Team Player (Statepoint)

f you’re a veteran, you have proven you can work on teams and, in many cases, lead them. Yet corporate recruiting experts say it’s crucial to properly frame your experience to maximize your chances of getting hired.

“Veterans bring many valuable skills and qualities to the corporate environment,” says Jerry Quinn, head of Military & Veteran Talent External Recruiting and Enterprise Military & Veteran Initiatives at Wells Fargo. “These include traits like strategic planning, critical thinking, problem-solving, communications and adaptability. overnor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the groundbreaking for a new $1.4 million community playground at PS 115 as part of the Vital Brooklyn Initiative, the Governor’s community development program for underserved neighborhoods in Central Brooklyn.

“Playgrounds and open green spaces are a crucial part of our Vital Brooklyn initiative that has helped create vibrant, thriving communities in Central Brooklyn,” Governor Cuomo said. “This safe and modern new community playground will be a new resource for children and families to enjoy the countless benefits of outdoor recreation, while supporting the health and wellbeing of more than 16,500 people.”

The groundbreaking took place for the new $1.48 million playground at PS 115, 1500 East 92nd St., Brooklyn, which serves a community of more than 16,500 people.

It includes an artificial turf field, running track, basketball practice hoops, play equipment, game tables and benches, trees, impervious pavers, a stage, a gazebo with a living “green roof,” an outdoor classroom, colorful art and a drinking fountain.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation funded the project under Governor Cuomo’s Vital Brooklyn initiative.

The New York City Council, through Member Alan Maisel, also earmarked $250,000 for the project.

Students, staff, parents and community members designed the new playground through The Trust for Public Land’s NYC Playgrounds Program. Five such playgrounds, serving more than 135,000 Brooklyn residents, have already

opened under the Vital Brooklyn initiative since September 2018, and all the remaining projects should all be open by next summer.

“The Vital Brooklyn Initiative is focused on improving quality of life and transforming Brooklyn for the future,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul.

“Children and families should be able to enjoy modern, safe, and accessible playgrounds, and that is why they are a central part of our efforts to improve neighborhoods in Brooklyn. This groundbreaking continues our efforts to invest in projects that grow the economy and increase recreational opportunities for New Yorkers.”

Vital Brooklyn is transforming eight asphalt schoolyards into playgrounds designed by local students, with new equipment, multi-purpose fields, grass, trees and in some cases, green infrastructure that will lessen the harmful impact of heavy rains on the city’s stressed combined sewer system.

Council Member Alan Maisel said, “I am pleased to be a partner in the new, state-of-the art playground at PS 115 in Canarsie, Brooklyn. As a former educator, I know first-hand how vital playgrounds are for school children and the community-at-large for exercise, recreation and team-building skills. I am especially pleased that local students assisted in the design of the area which will feature kid-friendly and desired equipment. Having the students and local youth play an active role in the design is a wonderful idea.”

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams said that he’s glad that the children and families of Canarsie will soon benefit from a new community playground.

“This investment will enhance vitally important greenspace for our borough, while providing a dynamic and engaging recreation space that contributes to improved public health,” said BP Adams.

In addition to the $10.6 million effort to enhance playgrounds, Vital Brooklyn has renovated 21 of 22 designated community gardens and improved three of four designated recreation centers in Central Brooklyn.

The five playgrounds already opened are located at: • PS 156/ IS 392, 104 Sutter Ave. • PS 145, 100 Noll St. • PS 213/The New Lots School, 560 Hegeman Ave. • NS 354/KIPP Academy Middle and Elementary Schools at 1224 Park Place • Winthrop School Campus, 905 Winthrop St. The playground projects are also supported by the not-for-profit Trust for Public Land, which help coordinate additional funding from city Department of Environmental Protection and from private philanthropy.

Launched in 2017, Governor Cuomo’s Vital Brooklyn effort targets some of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in New York State, including Bushwick, Bedford Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Canarsie, East New York, East Flatbush, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Cypress Hills/ Ocean Hill and Prospect Lefferts Gardens. Focusing on these Central Brooklyn communities, the initiative addresses a critical need for green space in a city where 73 percent of low-income neighborhoods fail to meet the city’s standard of 2.5 acres of parkland for every 1,000 residents.

OPINION: Importance of Educators of Color for Black & Brown Students

By Ron Rice, Senior Director, Government Relations at the National Alliance of Public Charter Schools have been a Black student, education policymaker, and now an advocate for providing the best educational opportunities for all our children. One reality that I’ve had to face and embrace through each of these stages in my life and career is that the prevalence of leaders of color like me is a major contributor to educational success and whose lack thereof stifles that potential. As a student of color, those examples helped me thrive; and today they inform my advocacy.

This month, my organization, the National Alliance of Public Charter Schools released its highly-anticipated report, “Identity and Charter School Leadership: Profiles of Leaders of Color Building an Effective Staff” which examined the ways that school leaders of color’s experiences and perspectives influence how they build school culture, parent and community relationships, and effective staff.

This needed report affirmed what I and many fellow school leaders of color have witnessed first-hand in schools from New Jersey (where I advised the state Department of Education) to Massachusetts, California, Louisiana, Missouri, Wisconsin, and

North Carolina, where school leaders of color were studied.

The report’s finding is clear: our children of color thrive with diverse and experienced teachers who understand their challenges and have a personal, unwavering dedication to their success.

Most importantly, our report is instructive as well because it sheds light — through the profiles of three public charter school leaders of color from Louisiana, North Carolina, and California — on the principles that can help match our best current and future teachers with our nation’s students. Three of those principles that resonated with my two decades in education policy are: First, fill our school leadership pipeline with talented educators of color who come from nontraditional backgrounds and

fields of study. But how do we dispel the myth that there are not enough qualified and passionate people of color who can and want to fill this educational pipeline? One way to do this comes from Eric Sanchez, co-founder of Henderson Collegiate — a network of three schools serving elementary, middle and high school in Henderson, North Carolina. Instead of only recruiting future educators from traditional education programs, Eric also recruits graduates from university programs focusing on social justice and ethnic studies.

And this encouragement doesn’t end once the teachers reach the classroom — we must provide clear pathways for these teachers to pursue school leadership.

Second, school leaders and education policymakers of all colors must be committed to seeing and promoting diversity as an asset, not a deficit; an opportunity, not an obstacle. Imagine how better prepared our children will be for the world of tomorrow if they have been taught the history behind their identity, the language behind their culture, and the geography behind their journey. While nearly all schools struggle with activating this principle for the benefit of our students, our report demonstrates that public charter schools are making substantial progress where traditional public schools haven’t.

Third, achievement and demonstrated success — not myths, preconceptions, and inherited political biases — must be the basis upon which we support the best educational opportunities for all our children.

For example, by their design, public charter schools have the flexibility to create and finetune curricula, teaching methods, and optimal outcomes that traditional public schools do not.

So, why would we ever consider putting obstacles in any educational paths that are showing real achievement?

Race and identity of both our educators and students is only one factor in the holistic successes we are all working towards. However, it’s also true that all schools across our country in every community have historically not valued students’ diversity and identity as assets to enrich the education they receive. Public charter schools are making real progress to expose this blind spot and make the needed course corrections to ensure the success we’ve seen for some students are the norm for all.

Most people understand the importance of sticking to a plan, but as your life changes and you work toward new goals, your spending habits will likely shift as well.

When you don’t account for these changes, it’s easy to fall short of your goals.

Learning to adapt to changes is key to creating a healthy relationship with your finances. Taking control of your money means customizing your plans to your needs, so it’s important to remember to be flexible and open to change.

To make sure your spending plan works, track and adjust your spending on a regular basis. Here’s what that might look like.

Know when to adjust your spending plan

1. Your income changes. This includes both increases and decreases: events like a promotion, a job loss, a raise, or other changes.

2. Your situation changes. This includes moving, getting married, having a child, or having a loved one pass away.

3. Your financial goals change. Maybe you’re ready to start saving for a wedding or a down payment on a house. Or, maybe you want to pay off student loans or credit card debt in the near future.

Adjust expenses in your spending plan Look for opportunities within your expenses to make changes. Here’s how to do so: 1. Re-examine where your money is going. It’s valuable to keep regular tabs on how you are spending money.

made, such as going out to eat more, or making slightly more expensive purchases.

Perhaps you’ve been promoted at work and want to splurge a little on yourself with new clothes. It’s OK to enjoy your accomplishments, but be sure to think about

how this may affect the rest of your spending plan in the long-term. Look for balance: if you want to start spending 10% of your income on clothing or entertainment when you used to spend 5%, then look for ways to cut in other areas.

2. Find opportunities to reduce spending. As you re-evaluate your plan, look for things you continue to pay for but don’t actually use. This might be a subscription or service that doesn’t offer what you need anymore. For example, if you recently got married, you and your spouse may want to consider consolidating your subscriptions to help cut costs. Be sure to review expenses that are coming out of your account automatically that you may have forgotten about.

3. Find opportunities for discounts and deals. Every year or so, take another look at what you’re paying for items like insurance, internet, or other utilities. You could benefit from finding a new service provider or negotiating a lower rate. Perhaps you’ve even shopped at a store enough that you’re eligible for discounts. Being

aware of these opportunities can help with your financial goals. Small changes like this can add up and make a big difference when you’re working toward a goal such as saving up for a down payment on a house or paying off student loans debts.

Don’t forget to make adjustments to your plan as you go through these steps.

arlem School of the Arts held its 2019 Mask Ball Gala on Monday, October 21st at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. Through generous donations, HSA raised over $1 million and set record-breaking attendance in support of world class art education programs in our community.

It was a night to remember, with creative interpretations of our masquerade theme, a New Orleans-style second line procession to dinner, inspiring words from our honorees Dorothy and Lupita Nyong’o, Michelle Ebanks, and Racquel Oden, and of course incredible performances from our HSA students and alumni, including vocal soloist Yancy Garcia, keyboardist Desmond Scaife, Jr., and violinist Majid Khaliq.

The Public Theater makes Ntozake Shange’s last wish come true: 'For Colored Girls' revamped with live music and songs

or colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf ‘by late legendary playwright/poet Ntozake Shange is back at The Public Theater for the first time since it premiered in March1976 and it has already been extended till December 8th, by popular demand. It is a must see show.

The success of this show is historical. Three months after its run at the Public, the show was performed at the Booth Theater on Broadway- produced by Joseph Papp and Woodie King Jr. - where it continued until July 1978 and ran for 742 shows, becoming the second play by a black woman to be performed on the Great White Way - preceded only by Lorraine Hansberry’s ‘A raisin in the sun’ in 1959 – and the production was nominated for the Tony

Award for Best Play.

Shange’s modern theater work remains as poignant, explosive and current today as it was groundbreaking when she wrote it in1974 - tackling taboo subjects like rape, abandonment, abortion and domestic violence. In 2010 she even updated it adding the poem “positive”, referencing the Iraq War and PTSD. For Colored Girls consists of a series of poetic monologues accompanied by dance movements and

music – an innovative form Shange defined as the choreopoem - told by seven women of color who weave their interlinked life stories scarred by violence, struggle, racism, loss and oppression in a very sexist society, into a multidimensional portrayal of sisterhood, love and empowerment.

One of the novelties in this beautiful revival at the Public Theater is based on a wish expressed by Mrs. Shange before passing last year: that the poems be ac-

companied by live original music and songs performed by the protagonists. Once again, Shange’s and the Public’s love for art have produced a masterpiece.

The protagonists are seven nameless African-American women only identified by the colors they are wearing. They are passionately played by Jayme Lawson as lady in red; Danaya Esperanza lady in orange; Adrienne C. Moore lady in yellow; Okwui Okpokwasili lady in green; Sasha Allen

lady in blue; Celia Chevalier lady in brown, and Alexandria Wailes lady in purple.

Although less seasoned than the original cast Shange performed as the ‘lady in orange’ and Trezana Beverley was the first African-American actress to receive a Tony Award for “Best Featured Actress in a Play” as the ‘lady in red’ – the current, young cast, is powerful, poignant and believable.

n Sunday, October 27, about 50 volunteers formed assembly lines in the Student Center of Brooklyn College in South Midwood to pack 10,000 rice and beans meals each containing six servings to be delivered to food pantries in the Bahamas. The event called “Feed Bahamas” aimed to feed those struggling in the archipelago nation after the destruction caused by Hurricane Dorian at the start of September. The Category 5 hurricane was the strongest storm on record to make landfall in the Bahamas.

Non-profit the Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club bought food supplied by The Outreach Program and assembled volunteers including girl scouts from Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Academy in Brooklyn.

Non-profit the Brooklyn College Rotaract also helped pack the meals while non-profit The Outreach Program organized the duties and food measurements for each assembly line.

The Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club plans to send the food to the Rotary Club of East Nassau in the Bahamas where the food will be given to the locals there.

According to figures announced on September 27 by Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Minnis, 56 deaths have been confirmed in the Bahamas since the storm and 600 people have been calculated missing.

In the Bahamian government’s first count around mid-September, the government announced approximately 2,500 people were missing.

United States Customs and Border Protection said about 4,000 hurricane refugees are living in the U.S. with many of them in Florida. Parts of the Bahamas are still destroyed amid recovery efforts.

Incorporating this knowledge into classroom instruction is a practical measure. When a greater percentage of students get the material the first time it’s delivered, teachers ultimately have more time to help everybody else get up to speed.

Schools Can Play an Instrumental Role in Empowering Young Leaders (Statepoint)

F

rom encouraging dialogue on mental health to initiating grassroots fundraising efforts for pediatric cancer, students across the country are choosing issues they’re passionate about and generating real change. Parents, educators and community members may ask a pertinent question: how can we develop this initiative in every child?

While some might view leadership as an innate quality, new research commissioned by Lead4Change suggests that students can emerge as leaders with the right school curriculum.

The independent research study measured change in key leadership skills in middle and high schoolers who complet-

ed the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program, a curriculum that teaches students to lead, create and implement team projects to meet a need in their community. Before and after participating in the program, students completed a survey that measured several different behavioral factors.

The study found that students experienced significant changes in their growth, including leadership skills (60 percent of students improved), respect for others (54 percent) and ambition and innovation (53 percent). Fifty-six percent of participants gained greater commitment to vision -- they were more capable of describing a compelling image of what our future could look like and were able to identify milestones to reach that vision.

One example of the program’s success was at Wantagh Middle School on Long Island, N.Y. Following a school survey that measured students’ mental health, a young student group melted old crayons to create aromatherapy candles to reduce stress. Proceeds were donated to the Born This Way Foundation,

an organization committed to supporting young people’s wellness. Students also took their story to the school board, requesting action. They led efforts in their school to create designated quiet restorative rooms.

“We learned to embrace failure and use it as a tool to get better,” says Patti An-

dreolas, a teacher who oversaw the project. “It became more about the journey and watching the students evolve.”

The survey also examined specific qualities integral for leaders, finding a statistically significant increase in students’ ability to engage, motivate and guide others to achieve goals that result in their desired changes. For example, after the Lead4Change program, students at Menchville High School in Newport News, Va. were united by a drive to improve their community, developing a comprehensive plan that included collecting food, volunteering for a local food bank, participating in anti-bullying campaigns and creating a “Teacher Positivity” campaign.

“As a group, we learned to incorporate everyone’s

ideas and delegate work to achieve our main goals,” says Ashley Johnson, a 10th grader involved in the project. “Personally, the project helped me with prioritizing, time management and learning to balance responsibilities.”

While making an impact can seem difficult due to the complexity of issues affecting communities, leadership curriculum gives students the skills to address these matters head-on. The study found that younger students and those with lower scores at the start of the program benefitted the most from participating, demonstrating that anyone can become a leader when the proper skills are nurtured.

he transition from childhood to adolescence is a complex time for kids, but it’s also a complex time for you, and you may find yourself unsure how to give your children more independence and when to stay involved. But when it comes to doctor’s visits, medical experts emphasize the importance of empowering teens to talk to their doctors one-on-one.

“During routine doctor visits, it’s important for adolescents to feel comfortable discussing their health care needs with their physicians,” says Dr. Maria Trent, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Adolescent Health.

“Often, it is only during confidential, one-on-one

conversations that teens are able to get the information and resources that they need to be healthy and safe.”

When teens and young adults aren’t sure if what they tell their doctors is confidential, they are less willing to discuss sensitive topics or may skip care altogether, suggests research published in the Journal of Adolescent Health. This is especially true for adolescents who report engaging in risky behaviors or report experiencing psychological distress, meaning those who need care the most may not be seeking it from their doctors.

You, your teens and their doctors should work together to ensure that confidential, one-on-one care is a part of every visit.

NY State Dept of Health Annouces New Services to Help E-Cigarette Users

T

he New York State Department of Health today announced new services for e-cigarette users seeking help to stop vaping, including free quit-coaching and nicotine replacement therapy through the New York State Smokers’ Quitline. The Department added the service to the Quitline to address the growing need to help users of e-cigarettes break their dependence on vaping. In addition, the Department announced the release of a Request for Applications (RFA) to award $16 million for the next fiveyear round to support healthcare systems in their efforts to help smokers and vapers quit through proven cessation methods, as well as the launch of a new statewide ad campaign to educate teens and their parents about the dangers of vaping.

To address the recent national vaping illness epidemic, the Department collaborated with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, which administers the

Quitline, to develop eligibility criteria and evidenced-based practices for the Quitline to assist e-cigarette users and provide Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) treatment.

NRT, particularly combination therapy with a patch and gum or lozenge, typically doubles the odds for successful quitting with cigarette users.

Those interested should contact the Quitline by calling 1-866-NY-QUITS (1866-697-8487) any day of the week beginning at 9:00 a.m. A specially trained Quit Coach will assess users of e-cigarettes for type of product, frequency of inhalation and dependence.

Based on the assessment, a user may be eligible to receive complimentary patches, gum, lozenges or a combination of these products. Quit Coaches also will help users develop a personalized quit-plan and guide them to consult their healthcare professionals and health insurance plans for additional stop-smoking medication and support. The Quitline is available for New Yorkers of

all ages, including adolescents.

Similar to the eligibility guidelines for cigarette users, users of e-cigarettes who qualify for the Quitline’s free NRT will receive a starter kit with a minimum two-week supply and can receive up to two kits per year – the second after 90 days from the first shipment.

New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said, “The ongoing outbreak of vaping-associated pulmonary illnesses plaguing New Yorkers and people across the country is a stark reminder of the addictive nature and potential dangers of e-cigarettes. We are proud to expand our existing services to further assist people struggling with nicotine addiction in all forms to quit once and for all.”

Andrew Hyland, PhD, Director of the Quitline and Chair of Health Behavior at Roswell Park, said, “Traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes have one unfortunate

thing in common: the nicotine makes the products incredibly difficult to quit. Thanks to the Department of Health, we are pleased to be able to expand our services to help more New Yorkers.”

In addition, the Department of Health is releasing a Request for Applications (RFA) to award $16,375,000 for the next five-year round to improve the delivery of healthcare services to help smokers and vapers quit through proven cessation methods. Organizations funded through this initiative will work with health systems throughout the state to ensure they have effective protocols and systems in place to help people addicted to nicotine quit. The organizations will address tobacco use disparities among people with low educational attainment, low income and poor mental health by supporting health systems efforts to change.

Recognizing the problem of addiction to nicotine from all forms of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, this

funding opportunity includes work focused on addressing emerging nicotine delivery products. Grantees will become well-versed in the emerging science of e-cigarette concerns and how health systems should respond, including implementation of new protocols for providing treatment with counseling and FDA-approved cessation medications.

With an anticipated start date of July 1, 2020, a total of $16,375,000 over a fiveyear period will be awarded to support contracts in nine regions across New York State and one statewide Center for Health Systems Improvement.

The program will help reduce disparities in tobacco use by providing resources and technical assistance to medical and mental health care organizations that primarily serve populations disproportionately affected by tobacco use. In NYS, such populations include those with the lowest incomes, the least education and those struggling with mental illness and substance use disorders.

Funded organizations will provide critical resources to healthcare organizations that are needed to adopt and implement comprehensive policies and system changes.

The Department of Health has also launched a statewide TV advertising campaign aimed at educating teenagers and their parents about the dangers of vaping. The Public Service Announcements can be viewed here. According to Department data, nearly 40 percent of 12th grade students and 27 percent of high school students in New York State are now using e-cigarettes. High school use in 2018 (27.4%) is 160 percent higher than it was in 2014 (10.5%).

The Harlem Miles

O

n Sunday November 3rd the 49th annual New York City Marathon will take place throughout the five boroughs making it the largest marathon in the world. In 2018, 52,812 runners crossed the finish line in Central Park. The New York Marathon started in 1970. Fred Labow and Vince Chiappetta were the founders. The event has been organized by the New York Road Runners since the beginning.

For the first six years the marathon was held in Central Park. It became a five-borough run in 1976 thanks to then Manhattan Borough President Percy E. Sutton and the Rudin Family. Jack and Lewis Rudin wanted to have an event that was in honor of their father Samuel Rudin the head of one of the most influential real estate families in New York City and an active runner. Jack and Lewis were close friends with Percy Sutton who was on of the most influential elected official of color in New York.

Sutton used his office to reach out to the four borough presidents to coordinate the five borough 26.219 mile run. The Rudin Family was the major sponsor of the event. Runners

who run this race often talk about hitting what is called the wall around the 21st and 22nd mile. Hitting the wall mean what it sounds like.

You feel like you just ran into a brick wall running as fast as you can.

The 21st mile starts when the runners are at 138th Street and 5th avenue mile 22 is at 121st street and Mount Morris Park West.

This is where many of the amateur runners start to feel that their mind is giving the body orders that the body can’t follow. The New York Road Runners organization has always been members of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce a civic and business origination that Sutton was an executive board member of.

One year the Road Runners approached GHCC with the idea of doing something to help motivate runners to break through the wall and continue for the next five miles through Harlem and into Central Park to the Finish line. In 2009 the Harlem Miles musical welcome was created.

The program has five musical stage sites that welcome runners from around the corner to around the world to Harlem.

Site number 1 is at 135th and 5th Avenue this stage features gospel and spiritual music. Site 2 is at 125th and 5th Avenue this stage features R&B. Site 3 is the mainstage and is located on the 22nd mile marker at 121 street and Mount Morris Park West (5th Ave.) this stage will feature a musical

tribute to “The Sound of Motown.” Site 4 is at 117th street and 5th Avenue, this stage will feature Latin and Caribbean music. Ssite 5 is at 110th and 5th Avenue and will be the Jazz stage.

The Harlem Miles has become a popular part of the New York Marathon giving runners the encouragement to continue, even though many of the later runners take the opportunity to stop and dance, before continuing.

n the day you took your first steps, your parents were very proud.

They took pictures of you standing by yourself with a one-tooth smile on your face, and then they called Grandma and Grandpa to tell them you were walking! It was reason to celebrate and you walk now without thinking about it, but in the new book “Her Own Two Feet”

by Meredith Davis and Rebekah Uwitonze, first steps aren’t always second nature.

One thing was for sure: Rebekah Uwitonze was independent.

Born with her feet twist-

ed sideways and backward, her shoulders stiff, and her middle fingers bent to her palms, Rebekah never let her problems stop her from anything. She could feed herself – she wasn’t a baby! – and though it took awhile to figure out how to quickly reach the bathroom a few feet from her back door, she otherwise got around just fine.

So what if she crawled, or lurched about on the tops of her feet? So what if folks in her Rwandan village told her parents to let her die when she was born? So what if some people said she was “cursed”? As long as Rebekah stayed strong and

Yes, she’d seen doctors: when she was small, they tried to turn her feet but it hurt a lot.

It didn’t work, either, nor did a second attempt, so when a white stranger came to her parents’ home and offered to take Rebekah to America to fix her feet, she was afraid.

She remembered being left at the hospital, and how much it hurt. Still, as Papa said, “Chance comes once” and so Rebekah went with a translator on her first airplane trip from one continent to another.

But Bugesara, Rwanda was nothing like Austin, Texas! In Texas, dogs are

allowed in the house and on the bed. There were new foods to try, a trampoline to play on, and new holidays to experience. Rebekah learned English, made new friends, and ate French fries while her surgeries healed and she learned to walk again.

But then it was time to leave Texas and go home.
