October is "Breast Cancer Awareness Month." In this issue we present the promotional efforts by Megabus with their pink buses. (see page 15) Being a Breast Cancer Survivor, the month of October has new meaning for me. I appreciate more th efforts to raise awareness of Breast Cancer and fundraising for the American Cancer Society and other entities researching a cure for breast cancer. I know that there have been many advances in the treatment of breast cancer and I have certainly benefited from earlier research since I had triple negative breast cancer, which is a rare and very aggressive form of Breast Cancer. I encourage everyone to participate in the October 20th American Cancer Society Run for Breast Cancer. I will continue to feature articles of Breast Cancer Awareness throughout the month of October.

hen companies announce a commitment towards achieving more corporate diversity, what do they really mean? For too many young African Americans, these commitments seem more like empty promises.

To date, there have only been fourteen black CEOs at Fortune 500 companies, and according to Fortune, there are just three in 2019. So how can corporations remove barriers and create access for emerging, multicultural leaders?

Diverse Partnerships to Drive Change Since 1987, Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has prepared and identified students at 47 publicly supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to thrive in the business sector. When Hennessy, the world’s best-selling Cognac, approached TMCF with an innovative idea involving HBCU graduate students, especially those earning MBA degrees – there was an immediate organizational alignment to improve the current corporate narrative. Together, TMCF and Hennessy conceived the Hennessy Fellows program with the goal of building a pipeline of diverse corporate leaders from HBCUs. The Hennessy Fellows initiative is the latest example of Hennessy’s commitment to supporting African American commu-

nities. In 1794, Hennessy arrived in the U.S. and has consistently demonstrated a progressive vision to amplify multicultural voices since. Never settle.” with its new fellowship program in partnership with TMCF. Yet, ascending to the highest levels of corporate leadership requires having access to more than just an ivy-league education.

African American leaders need opportunities to learn development skills, build their network, develop business acumen, and gain tangible professional experiences. Not to mention, the unspoken corporate rules that many HBCU students don’t have ready access to. with up to $20,000 per academic year, a $10,000 annual stipend for educational expenses, as well as VIP access to various professional networking events.

Unlike their counterparts, student loan debt weighs more heavily on students of color, which can often present barriers for things like applying for unpaid internships or frequenting profession-

al events. An estimated 86.8% of black students borrow federal student loans to attend four-year public colleges, as opposed to 59.9% of white students, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Hennessy Fellows seeks to offset these financial burdens – focusing on graduate-level candidates who don’t have as many financial assistance opportunities – with an investment designed to maximize students’ full potential across educational, professional and personal pursuits.

Wegmans Introduces Brooklyn Leadership Team with Nearly 80 Years of Combined Wegmans Experience

W

egmans Food Markets today announced the leadership team spearheading the grand opening and management of its newest store in Brooklyn, New York, opening Sunday, Oct. 27 at 7 a.m. in the Navy Yard.

The Brooklyn store received applications from more than 10,000 job seekers and hired 540, most of whom are from nearby neighborhoods in the borough. More than 200 of the new hires were first identified and referred by the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) Employment Center.

“We’re pleased with the results of working collaboratively with the BNYDC Employment Center.

Their efforts to find great local candidates helped us provide more jobs to residents near our store,” said Wegmans Vice President and District Manager Todd Ferrera.

“We’re thrilled to follow through on our longstanding promise to the community of opening a high-quality affordable grocery store in the Navy Yard and advance our mission to connect local residents with quality jobs,” said BNYDC President & CEO David Ehrenberg. “By hosting 108 events, our Employment Center team helped Wegmans recruit more than 200 hires from the local community. We’re proud that our efforts led to 1,560 applications for positions at Wegmans -- with nearly 40 percent of those applicants living in NYCHA properties and more than 90 percent living in Brooklyn.”

Ferrera also acknowledged the vital role that Doug Steiner, chairman of Steiner NYC, has played in bringing Wegmans to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

“Doug had a vision and a mission to develop this property and bring jobs and a one-of-a-kind shopping

experience to Brooklyn, and we are proud to help bring that vision to life,” said Ferrera.

“We have over 20 years of experience and a solid track record with Steiner Studios at the Brooklyn Navy Yard,” added Steiner.

“And we have a relationship with Wegmans dating back over 20 years, having developed multiple stores for them outside the city, so this was a great fit. We’re ecstatic to have helped bring so many new, great jobs to Brooklyn. Plus, this leadership team proves that the opportunities for advancement are real. It doesn’t get much better than this.”

Impeaching a President

ouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to move for an impeachment inquiry into President Trump has rocked Washington. The news of the resulting investigation has also unified Democrats, particularly those like Rep. Maxine Waters of California, who has argued for some time that Trump should face impeachment.

“Donald Trump has admitted to abusing the power of the presidency by asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to launch an investigation into his political opponent in order to get dirt that the Trump campaign could exploit in the 2020 U.S. presidential election,” Waters stated. Trump allegedly asked Zelensky to dig up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden, the current frontrunner to be the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election.

“This action within itself – where the president is seeking the cooperation and assistance of a foreign government in uncovering dirt on his opponent – is unlawful, unconstitutional, and unpatriotic. I am elated that the Congress of the United States will move forward in an expedited manner to investigate and impeach this president,” Waters said.

Still, experts and historians told NNPA Newswire that the probability of impeaching Trump remains extremely low. The idea of impeachment as drafted into the Constitution by its framers, is designed to establish the process whereby we can remove a President from office that was engaged in unlawful activity, said David Reischer, an attorney and CEO of LegalAdvice.com.

Section 4 of Article Two of the United States Constitution reads: “The President, Vice President and all Civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

The Constitution requires a two-thirds super-majority among Senators voting for conviction because the framers wanted to establish that removal from high office via any process that, thereby, overturns the vote (the will) of the electorate, justifies

and requires a high burden of proof, according to experts.

“Like the Mueller report, while the allegations against the president are serious, the allegations stop just short of actually concluding that a crime had been committed,” stated Reischer.

Removal is not the only reason to launch a formal impeachment inquiry, according to Sam Nelson, an associate professor and chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Toledo.

“Many observers have focused on the futility of impeachment given that a Republican-controlled Senate will almost certainly not vote to remove the President,” Nelson noted.

He added that the impeachment investigation into President Richard Nixon proved that the proceedings could move public opinion when there is evidence presented in an open forum.

Additionally, an official inquiry strengthens the hand of the six committees already investigating the president

and his administration, Nelson told NNPA Newswire, adding, “These committees are locked in legal battles with the White House over subpoenas, witness testimony, and executive privilege.”

“Courts are more likely to side with Congress in the exercise of its Article I power to investigate an impeachment than when they are engaged in regular oversight.

“And, perhaps most importantly, impeachment exists in the Constitution to be a deterrent to unconstitutional, criminal or illicit behavior by presidents, judges and other government officials,” he said.

Impeachment is the ultimate backstop for the constitutional separation of powers and Congress’s co-equal role in the constitutional design, according to Nelson. Impeachment, even if the Senate does not vote for removal, should act as a deterrent not just to Trump but also to future presidents of both parties, he said.

“To not open an impeachment inquiry given the gravity of the most recent allegations against the president is to give him, and all future presidents, vast, unchecked power to ignore the Constitution, the other branches of government, and the public interest,” stated Nelson.

So, what’s the process to impeach the president?

Historian and radio show host Michael Hart said it begins when one member of the

House drafts articles of impeachment against an elected official.

Impeachment is the same as an indictment in U.S. criminal courts.

Following the drafting of the articles of impeachment, the Speaker of the House decides whether to entertain the idea by convening an impeachment committee.

“This is done to discuss the merits the merits of the charges – and there could be many – and determine if support for the move is there,” Hart stated.

If the charges rise to the height of impeachment – as determined by the Speaker and under advisement from other caucus members, a formal declaration of impeachment is drawn, and hearings begin.

After the hearing, Congress decides whether to vote on impeachment.

If the vote succeeds, the Senate then must determine whether they will act.

“A little-known fact is that the impeachment of a president can be originated by a senator – but that senator would have to find a House member to sponsor and bring forward the call to the House,” Hart said.

Despite little chance of success, members of the House have used or considered impeachment as a way to taint a president, Hart noted.

“It’s a public condemnation, although it can be a risky one,” he said.

It can also bring forth needed facts, something Democrats and a growing list of other observers said is necessary for the current administration.

“An impeachment process is a viable option for the current House of Representatives given that the hearings will force several people in or close to the Trump Administration to testify before Congress under oath,” said D. Gilson, a writer who has taught popular cultural studies.

“Politically, this is smart as it will likely reveal misdeeds and contradictions leading up to the 2020 election. Judicially, this is smart as it requires folks to speak under oath, as opposed to on Twitter or Fox News,” Gilson stated.

Waters added that when coupled with Trump’s already shady history, there’s more than enough evidence for Congress to launch an impeachment query.

Waters continued: “This president has been documented by the Washington Post for having lied more than 12,000 times since taking office. Unlike any other president in modern history, Trump has refused to release his tax returns to the American people. Ingredients: • 3 pounds ground beef • 3 pounds ground pork • 3 tablespoons bacon drippings • 2 large onions, chopped • 1 bell pepper, chopped • 3 tablespoons red pepper • 5 cloves garlic, minced • 1 teaspoon oregano • 1 tablespoon cumin • 6 large fresh tomatoes, peeled and chopped (or 2 8-oz. cans tomatoes) • 1 small can green chilies • 2 teaspoons salt • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 2 12-oz. cans Dr Pepper • 2 cups water • 4 tablespoons chicken stock

• 2 cans kidney beans, drained • 2 jalapeños, finely diced • 1 6-oz. can tomato paste • 8 tablespoons chili powder Directions: • Render fat from bacon (save fat from cooked bacon).

• Sauté all vegetables and garlic in rendered fat.

• Separately brown all beef and pork; drain excess fat.

• Add beef and pork into the sautéed vegetables.

• Reduce Dr Pepper by 50 percent by bringing to a boil and simmering until quantity is half.

• Add all other ingredients and simmer for 1 to 2 hours.

The 57th Annual NYC Film Festival - IT IS ON!!

ollywood may make the movies but New York City if often the stage for the movies Hollywood makes. So it is only appropriate that The City That Never Sleeps and inspires thousands of producers and writers, should host a film festival yearly.

The New York City Film Festival runs from September 27th through October 13th.

Major films, documentaries, experimental films and retrospectives are all included in a noncompetitive atmosphere of anticipation and appreciation for film.

Amendment and the resulting practice of Mass Incarceration in the United States, was featured on opening night. If you have not seen «13th» or «When They See Us» (another DuVernay film), try having your own watch and discuss event with friends. Ava DuVernay is an Emmy, Peabody and BAFTA award winner to name just a few of her accolades. Ms. DuVernay is also the highest grossing African American female director in American box office history. Honoree Shendora Pridgen - executive director and global head of supplier diversity for Morgan Stanley, urged attendees to keep their eyes on the prize.

he New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce recognized 11 deserving women and one man at their annual awards event.

Eugenia Foxworth, the president of Foxworth Realty, was among the honorees Sept. 20 at New York Women of Excellence Awards and celebratory breakfast at the historic Battery Gardens restaurant in Lower Manhattan.

In her remarks, Foxworth said she opened Foxworth Realty in the middle of the recession back in 2008 and her office is in the same space as the Women’s Chamber of Commerce.

“I opened when the bottom fell out of the economy in the place where I was going into, but it felt good,” Foxworth said.

Hosted by Chamber of Commerce heads Quenia Abreu and Lina Gottesman, the NY Women of Excellence awards also served as a fundraiser for the chamber’s “ContractHER Initiative,” a plan that aims to increase the

Lotus Care Center Aims To Help Plug Harlem’s Healthcare Gap

t has been committed to providing customized care to people battling HIV/AIDS for more than 25 years.

But St. Mary’s Center has taken their mission even further with a new center offering medical, emotional and holistic support and interventions to the entire community.

Sr. Mary’s has opened the Lotus Health and Wellness center in the same building as its Central Harlem headquarters. It offers primary care, mental health services, pain management and recently began providing women’s health and pediatric care services to the public. There are also plans to provide dental health care services in the future, center officials said.

“We wanted to open up to everyone because there is a need for primary care services in the community,” Shobha Manaktala, director of complimentary therapies, told the Harlem

News.

The philosophy is to treat the whole patient, so besides primary medical care, Lotus Health and Wellness also provides complimentary therapies like therapeutic aromatherapy, acupuncture and talk therapy, Manaktala said.

“It’s a one-stop-shop,”

she said.

Manaktala said Lotus Care is doing its part to help stem the country’s burgeoning opioid crisis by implementing a Suboxone therapy as an alternative to methadone addiction treatment. Suboxone can be taken at home under a doctor’s care, but methadone must be administered at a treatment center.

“What we envisioned at Lotus was a holistic model,” Manaktala explained.

“We are trying to encour-

age people to look at other options.”

Manaktala said the center aims to do special outreach to residents at the nearby Manhattanville and Grant Houses, which has been traditionally underserved in terms of healthcare access.

The Forbidden Medicine

received a lot of feed back from readers of my article last week in the September 26th issue of HCN about my plans to produce a four-part special pilot series on Cannabis “The Green Show” on WHCR 90.3 FM. I am

writing this article in response to conversations with some of my mother's friends who are still active and even though I am now a senior they still talk to me like they feel my mother would, especially when they feel my behavior needs to be questioned.

They wanted to know my reason for getting involved in the legalizing of reefer.

I will not name names but the dialog we had convinced me that I should write this dialog to help others understand the Green Show and other Cannabis educational forums that are important at this time. The most important thing about the legalization of the recreational use of Cannabis in New York State from my prospective will be the ability to explore the health benefits of what has long been considered a forbidden medicine.

There are economic opportunities that will come with the legalization of cannabis for recreational use. Now is the time for strategies to be considered

for those living in New York States' urban communities who wish to take advantage of what many are calling the Cannabis Green Rush. I will explore those opportunities as well but provide information on the potential health benefits and help to demystify the reefer madness myths.

I always suggest reading the book “Marihuana: #The Forbidden Medicine” by two Harvard Medical School researchers Lester Grinspoon, M.D. and James B. Bakalar for those who want to understand a historic account of the medical use of cannabis, the political reasons why it was made forbidden and why it should be legalized .

Many of the seniors like my self who are mem-

bers of AARP received the September 2019 bulletin which has a special report on Marijuana and your health. If you are traveling by plane you can pick up a special History Channel magazine in the airport that has a wonderful history of Marijuana on most book stands until November 15th. This information helped to redeem me in the eyes of my mother's friends. One even suggested that god must have put me in the position to let people understand this.

I hope that this column, my WHCR radio show and the Soul City social broadcasting network will provide a platform to have dialogs about the medical use and business options of the cannabis industry. The official start of

the Green Show Dialogs about Cannabis will be moved back until Tuesday October 22nd from 4:10 pm to 4:50 pm on WHCR 90 .3 FM or :there will be three additional shows for this special pilot series November 19th and December 17th and 24th at the same time frame.

our seat is down there, right at the end.

You know, though, it’s not close enough to where you want to be. You need to be where decisions are made and careers are launched. No, your place at the table is close to the head and with “The Memo” by Minda Harts you’ll see how to get there.

Several years ago, a book circulated among businesswomen that advised them to “lean in,” speak up, and coalesce.

Harts says she eagerly read the book but, once finished, she was confused.

Like most women of color in business, she’d always “leaned in” because she

had to. That book spurred her to come up with The Memo.

“The Ugly Truth,” she says, is that few organizations teach women of color how to deal with mostly-white workplaces.

It’s not just a matter of showing up and doing the work; you need to survive and build “your squad.”

In business-speak, that’s networking, and it’s top of the list in importance. You may not feel like going to Happy Hour with coworkers who’ve irritated you all day but go anyhow. By joining in, even for a minute, you give people a chance to get to know you. You might find an office friend.

For women of color, office politics are twopronged: you must learn “respectability politics” in addition to the other kind.

Having a mentor will help; in the meantime, don’t burn bridges, don’t gossip, and watch your emotions at work.

It sounds like just another platitude, but know your worth. Invest in yourself and stand out, then get the self-confidence you need to ask for what you want. Just remember, salary isn’t the only thing to request: more vacation, a company car, and flextime are all nice bargaining chips.

Finally, if you’re white and reading this book, pay

attention.

Says Harts, “… women of color will be the majority of the workforce by…

There is no denying the usefulness of this book, nor its truth. “The Memo” offers helpful words for those who are the lone women of color at their workplaces.

It teaches strength in the face of racism, on hair issues, self-confidence, and for anyone who needs to school coworkers while keeping her job. It gives young women of color a sisterhood, albeit one made of paper.

And yet, there’s discord

in this book that a deeper look exposes.

At two particular points here, author Minda Harts chastises white women for making assumptions and “sweeping generalizations about ‘women’” without addressing any of the unique challenges that women of color face at work. This creates a paradox, since readers may notice overgeneralizations about white women that don’t allow room for those who are not clueless. That sets up further conundrums, to be sure.

Overall, go into “The Memo” looking for help and you’ll absolutely find it, just as you’ll find that you’re not alone. Go in eyes-wide-open when you take on this book.
