In this issue we are featuring the story of a young woman 25 years old who also had stage 3 triple negative breast cancer diagnosed in 2015 and died 1 and 1/2 years later in January 2017, which is when I was first diagnosed.

I am now celebrating 1 year cancer-free and realized how at 66, I am so blessed. God is Good. Brooklyn Seniors Face Off for Karaoke Contest Finals

The energetic seniors cheered and danced during the performances. The audience sang along and waved their hands in the air. Judges from previous contests were in attendance and took notes on the competitors, even though they were not voting on a winner that day.

The contest was judged by a panel of volunteer Brooklynites that included a fashion stylist and an opera singer. Cristobal Garcia of Ditmas Park took home first prize with a version of “Mas Que Tu Amigo” that got people out of their seats and on the dance floor. Second place went to Ana Mercado from Sunset Park and third to Vincent Clarke of Bed-Stuy. But there were no sore losers at Borough Hall.

Blackshear said the BK Sings event was about more than just fun. President Eric Adams is working with the Age Friendly Commission to make the entire borough of Brooklyn welcoming for older adults. Surveys were passed out to seniors at the contests, asking for their feedback on issues like housing, public safety, and health care. Blackshear hopes the Office of the Borough President will be able to report on the results in 2019.

The NYC Department for the Aging (“DFTA”) partnered with Brooklyn Borough Hall on the event. The DFTA provides in-home support to aging New Yorkers and funds nearly 250 senior centers. Zenovia Earle, DFTA Director of Public Affairs said, “We’re thrilled to partner on events like the karaoke contest because these events open the door to other services.”

Blackshear said President Adams was “amazed at how well it was received.” Harris told the seniors “some of y’all are karaoke crazy.” He is already planning to bring the contest back next year.

erforming in front of packed room at Brooklyn Borough Hall on the Thursday afternoon of October 4th, ten seniors competed to be crowned winner of the inaugural BK Sings Karaoke – Platinum Edition.

The finalists were the winners of series of karaoke contests held at senior centers that kicked off on August 14th and saw 150 seniors participate.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, himself an avid karaoke fan, started the BK Sings competition in 2016.

The event was held at bars and clubs throughout the borough and drew seniors who wanted to compete but weren’t enthusiastic about the nightlife aspect. Adams heeded their call and this year the Platinum Edition of BK Sings was brought to 22 senior centers in 18 communities throughout the borough.

Nan Blackshear, Community Affairs Director for the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President, cohosted the event with Special Assistant to the Borough President Marcus Harris. Blackshear called the seniors “the jewels of the community” and said events like this are important because they entice people who are not currently involved in senior programs to come out and get engaged. Despite being competitors, the contestants were supportive of each other.

or the first time in the history of its existence, the National Newspaper Publishers Association, which represents over 200 Black-owned media companies across the U.S., has made its way to Ile-Ife in Nigeria for a culturally impactful inaugural trade mission.

The NNPA, under the leadership of its president and CEO, Dr. Benjamin Chavis, was invited to Ile-Ife in Nigeria,

by His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, The Oonirisa (Ooni) of Ife, for The Olojo Festival, from September 27 through October 3.

The Olojo Festival is a very prestigious annual celebration to commemorate the dawn of creation and to highlight the historical and spiritual ties of Ile-Ife being the cradle of human existence.

The NNPA was officially invited by The Ooni of Ife to participate in the annual Festival as a way to better understand the history and cultural significance of Ile-Ife, as well as to better inform African Americans and others throughout the world about the development opportunities and important cultural intersections between our sisters and brothers in Nigeria and across Africa and with peo-

ple of African descent throughout the global African Diaspora.

“It has truly been a blessing to be a part of this unique and meaningful pilgrimage to Ile-Ife, Nigeria,” said Dr. Chavis. “African Americans have a history that did not begin or end with slavery in the United States. It is time we fully reconnect with who we really are without the trappings and ornaments of White supremacy.”

Ile-Ife is widely regarded as the cradle of the Yoruba race and culture. According to Yoruba myth, Ile-Ife is deemed the cradle of human existence based on the collection of historical information, em-

pirical facts and science.

Ile-Ife is celebrated as the original source of all mankind and The Olojo Festival is celebrated annually as the spiritual confirmation that God created the world and deposited the elements of creation in Ile-Ife. The city of Ile-Ife is widely known for its many sacred shrines and spiritual sites that are meant to regularly highlight, promote and remember the Yoruba race and its cultural identities. The members of the NNPA delegation were able to visit many of these shrines and sites during their visit to the historical land.

Lastly, NBLCA created the first programs for Black clergy to develop strategies to address the complexity of problems caused by HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS continue to disproportionately impact Black gay and bisexual men, heterosexual women, transgender men and women and youth. Hazel Rosetta Smith Writes Plays That Touches Your Soul

azel Rosetta Smith has been writing skits, singing and performing since she was 6 years old for her now deceased siblings (three sisters and one brother). She performed with The Duke Baldwin Children’s Performing Arts Company and had appearances on WNBC Children’s Hour.

Hazel studied journalism, speech and drama at Columbia University. She received theatre training & writing at Columbia University School of the Arts.

Hazel began her career as a journalist in the editorial department at Forbes Magazine for 6 years. In the early 1970s she began as a reporter for Big Red News and when Big Red was renamed The New York Beacon News, she

signed on as the Woman’s Editor. Hazel created “Wednesday’s Woman,” a 7-page section honoring African-American women on the move and soon after, she became the Managing Editor of the weekly newspaper. Hazel retired in 2002 to pursue her theatrical ministries full-time.

Hazel spent ten-years as a performing artist with Harlem’s Afro-American Studio’s Repertory Ensem-

ble Company under the direction of the renowned director Ernie McClintock.

She studied acting under the direction of the great actress Frances Foster at the Double Image Theater Company, NYC. In addition, she wrote and performed with the DITC Humanities Acting Ensemble at John Jay College and she staged and designed sets at HB Studios, NYC .

Her first play, “Tell-

It, Sing-It, Shout-It,” was conceived and written at New York’s Sloan Kettering Cancer Center the night before her kidney cancer surgery. Hazel was a cancer patient about to receive a miraculous healing. The stories God placed on her heart the night before that major surgery became her commitment to share the “Good News” by taking this message across the nation; nine months later the play became a reality.

Ms. Smith is the Founder and Executive Artistic Director of Help Some-

body Theatrical Ministries (“HSTM,”), which produces stage productions, special events & concerts.

Hazel is also a coordinator and choreographer of cotillions and beautillions. Her expertise in elegant presentation and etiquette has been utilized by churches, social and political organization that included the Urban League, CORE, the NAACP and several sororities for fundraising and college scholarships.

As a playwright, Hazel has a portfolio of five original plays that have received rave reviews. She wrote, directed and produced: “Tell-It, Sing-It, Shout-It,” “Time for Coming Out: Unity in the Community,” “Miss Hazel’s House of Heavenly Rest,” “To You, Mr. Hughes,” “The Sisters Speak!” along with “The

Flip Side of the Coin: The Brothers Speak!” Her plays have been all over the country over the past 25 years mostly by word of mouth.

Throughout her lifetime she has received many accolades. In 1985, Hazel received a “Presidential Recognition Award for Exemplary Community Service” from President Ronald Reagan for her nationwide intergenerational workshops titled “Becoming the Person You Can Be.” The Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, Pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church (her home church) presented her with an “Honorary Doctorate Degree of Victorious Living” in 2002.

Hazel’s best advice came from her oldest sister, “Live the life you love.”

Advances in Breast Reconstruction: Fat Grafting to Improve Outcomes

or many women who have lost one or both breasts to mastectomy, achieving the ideal breast reconstruction may take time and patience.

“While it is tempting to opt for short-term quick fixes, the reality is that breast reconstruction after mastectomy should be considered a process rather than a single procedure. Even with the most advanced techniques and superior surgical skill, small follow-up adjustments can help improve outcomes. Women should know that many issues with size, shape, and symmetry after an initial breast reconstruction can be addressed to help a woman’s breasts look more normal again, and these rehabilitative pro-

cedures are also covered by insurance,” says plastic surgeon and breast reconstruction specialist Dr. Constance M. Chen.

The goal for breast reconstruction should be to create soft, warm, and natural breasts that are symmetrical and proportional to the rest of a woman’s body.

After the initial reconstruction, women may have slight asymmetries. One way to achieve improved

symmetry is with fat grafting, which uses fat from another part of the body to make minor adjustments to the contour or size of the breasts. Fat grafting can also be used to fill in defects after breast conservation, when women have breast asymmetries after partial mastectomy (i.e., lumpectomy).

Fat grafting, or autologous fat transfer, is a type of natural tissue breast reconstruction in which a woman’s uses her own tissue to rebuild the breast. In fat grafting, the transferred fat does not have a blood supply. Thus, the only way the grafted fat cells can survive is if nutrients passively cross the cell wall through osmosis. “Since there is no

blood supply, about 50% of the transferred fat will be reabsorbed by the body,” says Dr. Chen. “For that reason, it is necessary to overfill a defect to achieve a woman’s goals. A patient may also need repeated bouts of fat grafting to compensate for any resorbed fat.”

The fat to be transferred to the breast is obtained via liposuction from fatty deposits in the body, such as in the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. The aspirated fat is processed to remove impurities, and then injected into the breast. Fat grafting is usually performed as an outpatient procedure.

Sometimes patients inquire about using fat grafting to reconstruct the entire breast, but fat grafting

can only rebuild the breast a little bit at a time since some of the transferred fat will be resorbed. In order to recreate the entire breast with fat grafting, multiple procedures are usually needed. Thus, recreating an entire breast with fat grafting is usually not efficient.

“Fat grafting should be considered an important adjunct procedure in breast reconstruction, which allows a woman to correct a defect resulting from lumpectomy or undergo finishing touches on a reconstructed breast.” says Dr. Chen. “It is a well-established technique that can be used with great success to help women achieve results to help them restore confidence

When Does Breast Health Begin for African American Women?

mber was your typical 25year old trying to make her way in the world. She left her Atlanta home for Los Angeles to pursue her dream to be an actress. She was thriving in LA, building her Instagram following and building a life for herself. This was halted when she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer in July 2015. She moved back home to Atlanta to be with her mom and fought like a girl until her death in January 2017. We wonder how early detection would have changed her outcome?

According to the CDC, African American women under the age of 35 have breast cancer rates that are two times higher than

cancer as Caucasian women of the same age.

Why are these younger Black women dying? It’s primarily because they face more aggressive breast cancers (like Triple Negative Breast Cancer) and are diagnosed at more advanced stages. genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2), or have close relatives with it.

Since there is no effective method of screening for young women, it is imperative that young African American women become familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel, and learn the signs of abnormal breasts. Since they are not getting mammograms at that age, 80% of young women ultimately diagnosed with breast cancer find their breast abnormality themselves and the earlier the abnormality is found, the greater the survival rate.

During her career Ludie created “The Three Pom Poms” in the early 1940’s. They were the opening act for Cab Calloway and they entertained the troupes at many USO shows during WWII In 1948 the trio travelled abroad to Japan, Okinawa, and the Philippines. They were active thru 1954, at which time Ludie took employment at the NYC Telephone Company until 1978.

Ludie resumed her career in 1982 with “The Swinging Seniors”. In 1984 she joined the “Shades of Harlem”, a Cotton Club Cabaret Musical playing at the Village Gate in NYC. She was a featured performer in “The Rennaisance Ladies”. The

show toured the USA and abroad to Japan, Monte Carlo, Lithuwania and the jazz festival in Italy. While with the show Ludie taught tap dance to the seniors at Kennedy Center in Harlem, NY. She and her friend Ruby Riley formed the “Tapping Seniors”, a performing group who entertains at hospitals, health fairs and various community functions. In 1984 Ludie was asked to be a guest artist at the Apollo Theater in “Motown Returns to the Apollo.”

“Her last public appearance was in 2005 in Little Rock, Arkansas with the “Shades of Harlem”.

She is the recipient of numerous recognition awards, honoree awards, newspaper write ups, magazine articles, and radio & TV interviews.

Ludie was especially proud of two Proc-

lamations. In 2008 she was the honored guest at the 17th Annual Tap St. Louis Festival (Heritage Institute) where she received the city Proclamation. She received the NYC Proclamation at Kennedy Center in the presence of her close friends. Ludie, up to the age of 102 years was still very active. She enjoyed her time at home but she also continues her volunteer work at Kennedy Center. She taught tap dance twice a week to new and old students and she participates in Line Dancing.

She always had a twinkle in her eye and a beautiful smile on her face.

Ludie leaves to cherish her loving memories nephew William (Agnes) Jones, grandnieces and nephews Stephen, Erica,

Stephanie; Godchildren Clarice, Nikki, Cynthia, Gloria and Lorraine.

erformer, Ludie Olivia Jones was born in NYC on January 28, 1916. She is one of 5 children born to Cottle Pearl Watkins from Roanoke, Virginia and Luther O’ Binner Jones from Georgia.

Ludie graduated from the NYC public school system in 1934 and went directly into the entertainment business. She joined “Lew Leslie’s Blackbirds,” a Black musical, as a chorus girl.

She was a member of the “Lang Sisters” along with Marion Worthy and Peggy Wharton who were the opening act for Louis Armstrong at the Paramount Theater in NYC. Ludie lived in Building #1 at Esplanade Gardens in Harlem for the past Fifty (50) years.

Her Godchildren Clarice Sealy and Shaniqua (Nikki) Morse took care of her for the past nineteen (19) years.

Her friend Ruby Riley from showbusiness transitioned two years ago at the age of 100.

Ludie was a Christian woman who loved God. She always projected gracious class and wore a smile on her face. She was outspoken and always extended a positive attitude to her friends and students.

At her funeral service many shared details about their relations with her and in particular at Kennedy Center. Darlene Jist, Thornie and Laverne performed a dance that Ludie taught them with a full musi-
