32nd Precinct meet with Business Owners and Community Groups by Marisol Rodriguez

O

n October 4th Commanding Officer (CO) Vincent Greany of the 32nd precinct sat down with the owner of Jacob Restaurant Rachid Niang and other community stakeholders for an informal meeting to get to know each other and discuss happenings in the precinct.

Officer Greany has been working in Upper Manhattan for many years, but recently joined the 32nd precinct in July and will be serving in his role as Commanding Officer for two years.

Community Affairs Representative Det. Osvaldo Collado was also present and positively acknowledged Mr. Niang, who has operated Jacob Restaurant for 12 years, as an important community partner helping to bridge relationships between police and Harlem business owners.

Also in attendance was Kim Lum ChanNiang, wife of Rachid Niang and Administrative Manager of the restaurant; David Taylor, Manager of Jacob Restaurant at 2695 Frederick Dou-

glass Blvd; and Pat Stevenson, Publisher of Harlem Community Newspapers.

The 32nd precinct roughly encompasses the area of 127th to 164th street, between 5th and St. Nicholas Avenues. The Community Council of the 32nd precinct holds public meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00pm at the Community Center, located at 34 West 134th Street. n September 29 th , Mobilizing Preachers and Communities NY (MPAC) in partnership with Airbnb held a back-to-school bash to celebrate the community and promote academic excellence among local kids. They distributed 500 book bags filled with school supplies. There was live music, interactive games, face painting, hot food, vendors and scholarship applications.

Brooklyn L Train Riders Wonder How Will They Get into Manhattan

W

his enthusiasm for the scooters as a way of bringing new technology to his historically underserved community of BedStuy, while Reynoso, who represents Williamsburg and Bushwick, sees the scooters as a piece of the puzzle he’s been dealing with for years: mitigating the effects of the L train shutdown.

Borough President Adams rode one of the electric scooters from Bushwick to Williamsburg this week, touting the scooter’s viability as part of the solution for mobility during the L Train Shutdown: Right now, Bird scooters aren’t legal in the city, but Brooklyn Councilmember Rafael Espinal (D37) is working with others to draft legislation that will legalize them. The company appears ready to launch as soon as they get the word, but it remains to be seen if the scooters will be fast enough for commuters who travel into Manhattan.

It’s worth mentioning that while politicians work to pave the way for new tech innovators, the jury is out on whether e-bike riders, who are mainly immigrants and have been subject to stricter enforcement,

will see any kind of reprieve.

CitiBike launched their own e-bikes over the summer, debuting pedal-assist bicycles geared specifically towards commuters looking for a boost on their L Train-affected commute. A small number of bikes have been deployed

so far, mostly in corrals in Williamsburg, but CitiBike plans to launch 1,000 more bikes in the spring when the shutdown occurs.

But even 1,000 bikes is a drop in the bucket when compared to the 225,000 people that cross the East River via the L train each

day.

Also, CitiBike’s penetration into the farther reaches of Brooklyn—where commuters will be even more affected—has been limited.

Right now, Bushwick is entirely without CitiBike docks.

missioner Polly Trottenberg did tease the possibility of a Bushwick expansion when she visited East Williamsburg with Mayor de Blasio this summer. While there are no concrete details yet, she did say they hoped to expand into Bushwick before the shutdown.

ith the L Train shutdown six months away—and weekend closures of the entire line in the meantime—Brooklyn residents and local politicians are looking into any kind of alternative transportation they can find.

Of course, the MTA has its plans: bolster service on adjacent lines to absorb passengers, a fleet of buses running across the Williamsburg bridge, and a brand new direct ferry route between Williamsburg and Manhattan.

Lately, though, politicians have been backing new ideas in transit, from scooters to bikes to mopeds, but will they be viable options remains to be seen. A huge New York push is coming from Bird scooters, the electric ride-sharing scooter company that has taken tech hubs like San Francisco by storm. The company is making a serious bid for Brooklyn, having wrangled endorsement events and ride photo ops with Brooklyn politicians from Councilmembers Robert Cornegy and Antonio Reynoso to even Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

Advocates Encourage Voting Rights for NY Parolees

he politics of fear and the false connection between race, dangerousness, and criminality have served as obstacles to parole justice for far too long, according to Anthony Thompson, the director of the New York University Law Center on Race Inequality and the Law. “We should be working to change that paradigm, and implementing reforms that help get people who have paid their debt to society and changed their lives for the better get out of prison and successfully reintegrated into their communities,” Thompson said on Monday, as advocates rallied in New York’s capital to call out Senate GOP leadership’s agenda which Democrats and others claim is an interference in independent parole board decisions and the people’s right to vote.

“Unreasonably curtailing parole releases and silencing the political voices of those who have been released from prison is bad policy, guaranteed to reproduce the unfairness and injustice we should all stand against,” Thompson said.

He was joined by a broad coalition of criminal justice advocates, formerly incarcerated people and community members at a state Senate Republican hearing on the State Parole Board’s conduct and the Governor’s restoration of voting rights to more than 24,000 people on parole.

Afterward, in a news release,

many of the advocates said they were there to stand in support of voting rights for all people and the increases in Parole Board release rates, despite strong opposition from some Republican Senators.

They said the Parole Board should release more incarcerated people and that all people on parole should have the opportunity to vote, regardless of their crime.

“New York State Senate Republican leaders need to stop playing political football with the lives of currently and formerly incarcerated people,” said Jose Hamza Saldana, a community organizer with the activist organization, Release Aging People in Prison Campaign.

“After 38 years in prison, four parole denials and having just voted for the first time in my life, these political optics are a direct attack on me, my family and all incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women,” Saldana said.

Saldana continued: “Parolees are returning citizens. We were once a part of the problem but today and for a long time we have been an integral part of the solution. We are committed to working with faith and community-based organizations

to develop viable strategies to address the social ills plaguing our communities.

Chrys Ballerano, the Senior Director of the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault, said as an organization committed to healing and justice for all survivors and to truly ending sexual violence, the group recognizes that reliance on a biased and inherently reactive criminal justice system will not achieve these goals.

“Like many survivors, we would rather see public officials take action to ensure that survivors, their families, and communities have the comprehensive resources they need to heal and to thrive; that significant investments are made in community services and institutions that will prevent violence from happening in the first place; that people who commit harm are held accountable in a meaningful way that does not perpetuate a cycle of violence; and that people who commit harm have access to the services they need to stop committing harm,” Ballerano said.

New York State Sen. Luis Sepulveda, who serves as the ranking member of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee, said he fully supports Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s decision to restore voting rights to those who have served their time.

Rev. Al Sharpton said his National Action Network (NAN) was honored to have Cuomo announce an executive order that granted conditional voting rights

to more than 35,000 parolees in New York.

The announcement came earlier this year at the NAN convention.

“We have fought and will continue to fight for every person’s fundamental right to vote, despite their history in the justice system,” Sharpton said.

Furthermore, the majority of incarcerated older adults have completed or even developed many progressive programs that promote education, constructive and critical thinking, and pro- social behaviors for the betterment of the community, said James Royall, a Re-Entry Advocate at Brooklyn Defender Services in New York.

“Rejoining their families and being part of the fabric of society is paramount to them. These are the very individuals who, after release, continue to make tremendous contributions to our society, whether as entrepreneurs, mentors, or loving family members” Royall said.

“We need to trust our Parole Board professionals to release individuals who do not pose a threat to public safety,” said Retired Albany Police Department Chief Brendan Cox. “We want them out of prison, contributing to society instead of costing us $100 a day that could be reinvested into programs that prevent crime,” Cox said

tarting October 10th, the Apollo Theater in partnership with Coca-Cola will launch the “Coke Save” a new interactive audience experience that gives online viewers the opportunity to actively participate in Amateur Night at the Apollo. Unhappy Gut? Some People Suffer for Years Before Seeing a Doctor (Statepoint)

bdominal pain? Diarrhea? An estimated 16 million Americans live with a type of irritable bowel syndrome called IBS-D (the D stands for diarrhea), and it affects both men and women almost equally.

However, only 30 percent of individuals consult a physician about their symptoms.

Why is that?

“People who experience symptoms of IBS-D can feel like their symptoms are not severe enough to seek medical attention or that there isn’t anything doctors can do to help,” says Dr. Howard Franklin, vice president of medical affairs and strategy at Salix Pharmaceuticals. “But doctors want to hear about everything you are feeling so they can determine the underlying cause of your discomfort and help you find a treatment plan that is right for you.”

A closer look at IBS-D Symptoms of IBS-D, which are different in everyone, include stomach pain and cramping, frequent diarrhea, gas, bloating and an urgency to use the bathroom. Many people experience feeling frustrated, missing out on activities because of symptoms and avoiding situations where there is no bathroom nearby.

IBS-D can be diagnosed based on symptom history, including: • Abdominal pain at least one day a week during the last three months • More than 25 percent of bowel movements are loose or watery (diarrhea), and less than 25 percent are hard or lumpy (constipation) • Symptoms started at least six months ago What could be the cause?

While the exact cause of IBS-D is unknown, and people may have IBS

for more than one reason, an imbalance in the usual numbers and proportions of normally healthy bacteria in the digestive system (the gut microbiota) has been found in many people with IBS-D. The microbiota help digest and absorb food and work with the immune system as a barrier against other microorganisms that can cause disease.

“One study of 109 patients with IBS showed that 73 percent had an imbalance in their gut microbiota, compared with only 16 percent of healthy people,” says Dr. Franklin. “Other potential reasons may include previous gastrointestinal infection or food poisoning, communication problems between the brain and digestive system, a family history of IBS and other causes.”

Treatment options There is currently no cure, but there are treatments that can help with the symptoms of IBS-D. Lifestyle changes, such as eliminating certain foods and increasing exercise, could help.

“Studies have shown that between 50 and 70 percent of patients failed to respond to either fiber or antispasmodics as a treatment therapy,” says Dr. Franklin. “There are different types of prescription treatments for IBS-D. If one isn’t working, it’s important that patients ask their healthcare professional about trying a different medicine to find what treatment is right for them.”

Laura Abadsantos-Rogers, Director of the Ki Energy Wellness Center located at 13 West 122nd Street in between Lenox Avenue and Marcus Garvey Park is hosting two, 2-hour workshops on Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018 and again on Tuesday, November 13th, 2018 from 6 pm to 8 pm that features the EGOSCUE’S PAIN FREE METHOD.
