ast Month New Yorkers spent the weekend enjoying delicious food and drinks from some of the premier eateries in the city – and all for a good cause – the event raised $1 Million for charity. Thousands of people attended the annual New York City Wine & Food Festival, which benefits needy city residents.

The three-day bacchanal

featured some 80 intimate dinners, cooking classes and late-night fetes, including “Maker’s Mark’s” “Flashback Friday” 90s party Oct 11th, where Rev. Run DJ’d and emceed and “The Breakfast Club’s” Angela Yee made a special appearance. The festival culminated with the Grand Tasting presented by ShopRite Oct 12 and 23 on Pier 94 on the West Side of Manhattan.

The festival brought

out celebs, chefs and tastemakers, including Whoopi Goldberg, who spoke to “What Not To Wear” host Stacy London, and “Red Rooster” restauranteur Marcus Samuelsson, who signed copies of his cookbook and led a cooking demonstration on the main stage. Harlem’s own Charles Gabriel of Charles Country Pan Fried Chicken was cooking up his famous chicken in a skillet.

Fitness and lifestyle expert Hannah Bronfman also hosted a cooking demo where she made smooth-

ies and carb-free pancakes.

“I’m a huge foodie,” the cookbook author said. “I’m assuming you are as well, that’s why you’re here.

I love to eat wholesome foods, and I love them to be delicious and nutrient-dense and easy to make.”

Morton’s Steakhouse handed out short rib sliders, while Shaka Bowl served smoothies with vegan sugar cookies. Jams NYC had Maine lobster served in lettuce cups and the ShopRite station had comfort foods like macaroni and cheese

and cheeseburger sliders.

Wine and spirit brands were on hand to quench patron’s thirst, including cocktails made from Tito’s Vodka and carrot ginger juice, Mionetto’s prosecco, Old Elk’s “Smore’s” style bourbon, and Whispering Angel rose wine.

The event raised about $1 million, and one hundred percent of the festival’s proceeds benefit nonprofits “No Kid Hungry” and the “Food Bank For New York City.”

Black Teen Suicide Reaches Historic Highs

By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia frican American teenagers in the United States historically have had lower suicide rates than their white counterparts – until now.

A new study analyzing suicide among American teens by a team led by researchers at the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at New York University have uncovered several troubling trends from 1991 to 2017, among Black high school students in particular.

Researchers discovered that between 1991 and 2017, there has been an increase in the number of African American teens who said they had attempted suicide in the past year. Suicide rates for teenagers of other races and ethnicities either remained the same or decreased over that period.

The researchers did not cite a reason for the trend.

Bill Prasad, a licensed professional counselor with Contemporary Medicine Associates in Bellaire, Texas, cited what he believed are some reasons.

“Lack of accessibility to mental health care, the inability to pay for medications and healthcare coverage, the lack of acceptance of mental illness among some members of the black community, and the availability of firearms,” Prasad stated.

Prasad was not among the researchers involved in the study.

phenomenon.” “Young people in these groups are less likely to share their issues surrounding depression and thoughts of suicide with friends and family than youth in other racial and ethnic groups,” King stated.

Among the answers is starting the conversation on depression and suicide in high-risk groups,” he said.

“A partial answer is giving young people permission to give voice to their experiences and feelings, without recrimination, such as ‘If you were stronger in Christ this wouldn’t be happening,’ or ‘What do you have to be depressed about, we’ve given you everything. Your father and I started our life with nothing,’ and so forth,” King stated.

Researchers in the NYU study noted that suicide is the second-leading cause of death for teens from all demographics. They found that only accidents kill more young people than suicide. The study also revealed that, in 2017, approximately 2,200 teens between the ages of 15 and 19 died by suicide. Researchers gathered information provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 198,540

high school students from 1991 to 2017. Among high school students of all demographics, 1 in 5 said they were thinking about suicide, and 1 in 10 said they had made a plan to end their lives.

“As an African American woman, suicide is prominent in our community for two reasons: we often do not know how to handle it amongst our families, and the pressures on our culture are rising,” said Sabriya Dobbins of Project Passport LLC, a company that encourages getaway retreats centered around three mental wellness areas: reflection, community and personal. “Oftentimes when a black family member says they want to take their life, the family may resort to church, belittle their response and tell them to stop overreacting, or simply assume it is not a big deal,” Dobbins stated. “African American families are taught to be tough and to hold it together because it is already ‘us against the world.’ We are taught to put our heads down and work hard to get those degrees and move up in our careers. “This causes expectations to be too high, then depression and anxiety are heightened. Not only are black youth trying to satisfy their families and be strong, but they are trying to fight their way through a world that is not always accepting. A world where they are dying in alarming numbers in senseless crimes. It is a double edge sword.”

Parents should be on the lookout for risk factors, such as a recent or severe loss like death or divorce, said Dr. Fran Walfish, a Beverly Hills family

and relationship psychotherapist, author of The Self-Aware Parent. “Parents should take heed when they observe specific warning signs like changes in behavior, including difficulty concentrating, difficulty focusing on school or following routine activities, researching ways to kill oneself on the internet, increasing the use of alcohol or other drugs, and acting recklessly,” Walfish stated.

Included among other signs are changes in personality, appearing withdrawn, isolating to their room, irritability, extreme mood changes that are more than typical moodiness, exhibiting rage or talking about seeking revenge, Walfish added.

Other alarms include changes in sleep patterns, insomnia, oversleeping, nightmares, talking about dying, going away, or different types of self-harm, she said. “Teaching problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, building a strong connection to family, friends, and community support are ways to help,” Walfish stated.

“Restrict access to highly lethal means of suicide, such as firearms, and provide access to effective mental health care, including substance use treatment. Talk to your child. Many people are fearful that talking to their children about suicide will increase their risk of suicide. This is a myth,” Walfish said.

“Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” Is Setting A New Bar On Broadway

her loud singing in church and gets into an argument with her father, that turns violent. Zelma admits that she doesn’t want to be in this marriage and didn’t want Anna-Mae. She abruptly takes her other daughter Alline and walks out. Then her father walks out and Anna-Mae is raised by her grandmother— Gran Georgeanna. As a teenager she is sent from Memphis to St. Louis to live with her mother and sister. There she meets Ike Turner at a club and sings for him. He gets her mother to allow him to take her on tour and things take off from there. But not actually the way you may think. The book truly opens the audience’s eyes to a lot more detail of Tina Turner’s life than we were aware of.

But, I don’t want to say more than that. This musical is so sharing and inspiring! Tina Turner is a woman who has been through so much. The rejection of her mother, an abusive husband, and the struggle to find her own voice and have a belief in her selfworth. She is someone who faced adversities and repo men, she had problems paying her bills and was thought at one time to be a has-been, but she was able to not only prove the naysayers wrong, but come out of everything a blazing, beautiful, spiritually and emotionally strengthen woman. She proved that there was always a fighter inside of her and she fought with every fiber of her being.

All the cast members are absolutely fantastic and include Daniel J. Watts as

Ike Turner; Dawnn Lewis as Zelma; Myra Lucretia Taylor as Gran Georgeanna; Mars Rucker as Alline, along with a host of other featured actors and an ensemble that is incredibly versatile and talented as some play more than one role. The creative team behind this musical is extraordinary and includes magnificent musical supervision, arrangements, additional music and conducting by Nicholas Skilbeck, gorgeous set and costume designs by Mark Thompson and breathtaking, pulse-racing choreography by Anthony Van Laast. I mean Warren and the members of this cast perform all the signature moves that you are used to seeing done by Tina and the Ikettes and the direction by Phyllida Lloyd is phenomenal!

One of the things that I loved when I first walked into the Lunt-Fontanne theatre on W 46th Street was all the beautiful Black women I saw in front row, center orchestra seats. Women who came out to see the story of Tina Turner. A story told through a book by African American playwright, Katori Hall with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins.

Adrienne Warren as Tina is superb! She is beautiful, can sing her a—off, dance it off and her ability to transform from the wife of Ike and being brutalized to taking control of her life and her destiny and discovering a new Tina, is a testament to the indisputable passion and power of a women’s spirit. One person who I will have to give props to is Skye Dakota Turner, who plays Young Anna-Mae and is making her Broadway debut. This little girl is gifted beyond belief. Her singing will make you smile, cheer, clap and recognize her superior gift.

The musical is brilliantly written and brings the audience full circle. It begins with us seeing Tina, when she was doing her solo career, then you see her grandmother and her father, who was a preacher and we are taken back to her childhood and her singing in a Memphis church.

Singing loudly and catching the spirit. The audience is introduced to Tina, whose real name was Anna-Mae Bullock, her father Richard Bullock, mother, Zelma and older sister Alline. Zelma is quick to criticize Anna-Mae for

Commerce. The program had five musical stage sites that welcomed runners from around the corner to around the world to Harlem. Site # 1 was at 135th and 5th Avenue this stage featured gospel and spiritual music.

Site # 2 was at 125th and 5th Avenue - this stage featured R&B music. Site #3 was the main stage and was located on the 22nd mile

marker at 121st Street and Mount Morris Park West (5th Ave.) - that stage featured a musical

tribute to “The Sound of Motown.� Site #4 was at 117th Street and 5th Avenue - this stage featured Latin and Caribbean music. Site #5 was at 110th and 5th Avenue and was the Jazz stage.

The Harlem Miles has become a popular part of the New York Marathon giving runners the encouragement to continue, even though many of the later runners take the opportunity to stop and dance, before continuing.

roperty owners. Politicians, Community Leaders, and Business owners were invited to the annual 125th Street Business Improvement District (125BID) annual meeting held at the Apollo Theater last week. The theme of the meeting was the “Quality of Life – On and Around 125th Street.” The stated mission of the 125th Street BID is: Expand sustainable economic activity in the area including the creation or expansion of businesses and the development of jobs for community residents; Maximize the ability of local residents, businesses and institutions to benefit from any and all opportunities created by commercial revitalization efforts; and Improve the quality of life in the community.

The Key Note Speaker was NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer who was born and raised in Washington Heights. Stringer described the 125th St BID as the most vital BID in the City. He said, “Harlem embodies the vision and strength of New York City.”

Board member Leah Abrams, owner of Settapani Restaurant on Lenox and 118th Street spoke about working with the 125th Street BID on future plans for the 125th Street BID to include Harlem businesses that are not on 125th Street in BID promotions.

After the annual business of the 125th St BID a discussion was held on “Quality of Life – On and Around 125th Street.”

The Moderator was Rose Pierre-Louis, former Man-

hattan Borough President.

The panelists included: State Senator Brian Benjamin; Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer; Deputy Inspector Christopher McIntosh, NYPD 28th Precinct; Henry Ehrhardt, Director, Bureau of Community Affairs, NYC Dept. of Sanitation; Cicely Harris, Chair of Manhattan CB#10; Nilsa Orama, Chair of Manhattan CB#11 and Shawn Hill, Co-Founder, Greater Harlem Coalition. Moderator Pierre-Louis instructed the panelist to give a short presentation on what they see as the problems, what they are doing and what they see as some opportunities and solutions. After the panelists made their presentations a Q&A session was held with the audience.

The overall discussion was informative and insightful. The community board presidents announced they are all working together as a Manhattan Collective and they get together often to discuss similar problems and solutions. The panelist all agreed upon the importance of small businesses in the community and finding ways to assist them with affordable rent solutions.

They also agreed on some basic problems with sanitation, the over saturation of treatment centers in Harlem vs other communities, the need for more police presence in certain areas, etc.

Living with Chronic Liver Disease?

Be Aware of Hepatic Encephalopathy (Statepoint)

pproximately 30 million people in the U.S. have some form of liver disease, which occurs in people for many different reasons. Some common types and causes of liver disease include hepatitis, caused by viruses A, B, and C, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is caused by too much fat in the liver cells, and alcohol-related liver disease, caused by consuming too much alcohol. Having liver disease over a long period of time can result in cirrhosis, an advanced chronic liver disease, which then puts a patient at risk for hepatic encephalopathy (HE) – a serious complica-

tion of advanced liver disease.

“Up to 80 percent of patients with cirrhosis can develop HE. This condition can have very debilitating effects on patients and takes a toll on caregivers, especially as the condition progresses,” says Dr. Howard Franklin, vice president of Medical Affairs and Strategy at Salix Pharmaceuticals. “However, many patients with liver disease, especially younger patients, are not even aware they are at risk for developing HE, so early recognition of signs and symptoms is critical.”

A Closer Look at HE In patients with advanced chronic liver disease, the liver is damaged so it cannot filter toxins

out of the blood the way a healthy liver would. These toxins can then build up and travel through the body until they reach the brain. The buildup of these toxins in the brain can then lead to the symptoms of HE. Onset of HE can start slowly, and at first, people with the condition may not even be aware they have it.

ietary supplements help people get the nutrients they need to thrive, and 77 percent of Americans take them, according to the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN).

However, experts say that in order to make smart choices down the line, it is necessary to understand changes being made to product labels.

“The Food and Drug Administration has mandated that all dietary supplement products feature updated labeling

by January 2021 to reflect the evolution of the American diet,

as well as advancements in nutrition science,” says Brian Wommack, senior vice president of communications at CRN. “Larger manufacturers will comply by January 2020, and many other manufacturers will be introducing the new labels early, so it’s smart for everyone to get familiar with the updates now.”

Eighty-two percent of Americans agree that the information on the label helps them make purchasing decisions, and being label wise, according to Wommack, means being committed to reading product labels,

having knowledge of what information is featured and why, and making smart, well-informed purchasing decisions.

“While some of the changes to the label are more obvious than others, all of them are important to understand,” says Wommack.

To help you understand the transition, CRN has identified some of the noticeable aspects of the new Supplement Facts label: • New Daily Values (DVs) will reflect the latest nutrition science and changes in American diets.

• Vitamins A, D, and E will change

from amounts in International Units (IU), to the more common measures of milligrams (mg) and micrograms (mcg).

• Folic acid, an important nutrient before and during pregnancy, will be listed as folate and measured in micrograms

of dietary folate equivalents (DFEs).

ou’re doing okay.

Shaky, most days, and you can’t stop crying but you’re doing okay. Thanks for asking, although nobody ever really wants to know. They look away, up or down or anywhere but at the truth: you’ve lost a baby but in “What God is Honored Here?” edited by Shannon Gibney and Kao Kalia Yang, you’ll find sisterhood.

In long days after the loss of their unborn babies, journalists Gibney and Yang began a different kind of healing journey, looking “desperately for answers… finding meaning in human experience.” Alas, for them, as non-white women, it was lacking.

It was then that they began researching, specifically seeking stories from Native women and women of color – tales that were painful to tell, or that the tellers had suppressed. This book is made from those stories.

Here are tales of women who knew their babies were dying; they knew about problems, that the baby was sick, wasn’t flourishing, wouldn’t live; they minimized news of birth defects. Mistakes were made, maybe; guilt was involved, or a doctor was particularly uncaring. No matter; those mothers wanted their babies, their first or second or seventh pregnancy that didn’t last. Their newborn that didn’t live.

They’re memories of

an Anishinaabeg woman, a Thai refugee, a black woman with white in-laws, an Asian American woman, a wife of a Mongolian man who didn’t speak his language enough, each left with empty arms, dealing with “a tiny baby” in a way that makes sense at the end of something that makes no sense at all. Each wondering what happened, and getting answers that left them angry, stunned, satisfied that it wasn’t their “fault,” or without answers altogether.

And yet – there’s hope in this book.

Hope in the tales of the future, and babies that will live to hear about a missing sibling. Hope for twins, though there should’ve been triplets. Hope, when one

And then there’s that hope…

For mothers who grieve, this book is great but it’s also for fathers, grandmas, aunties, and friends. Just know this: it may be cathartic to cry through “What God is Honored Here?’ but take it slow. Give yourself time, and this book’ll be more than just okay.
