Letitia James is a Woman on Fire for New York State Residents

During the Democratic primary for state attorney general held in September Ms. James beat out three other candidates Letitia James is now poised to become the first black woman to win a statewide position when registered voters go to the polls on Tuesday, November 6th. Her Republican opponent is lawyer Keith Wofford.

With Democrats outnumbering Republicans in the state by a margin or more than 2 to 1, some would think Letitia is cruising on easy street. However, she still needs your vote.

Letitia is working hard up and until November 6th to get people to come out and vote so that our voices can be heard to make sure she is our next state attorney general. When asked what on her agenda for the first 90 days after she is elected and sworn in, she stated: 1. I’d like to confront President

Trump’s agenda and hold his administration accountable by standing up for marginalized people of our state.

2. Investigate government corruption 3. Defend health care for all New York State residents 4. Hold landlords accountable for horrendous conditions in New York City and Buffalo.

I have consistently fought for tenants’ rights as public advocate and I want to continue to do so as state attorney general.

5. Protect our state’s natural resources in Buffalo, Newburgh and Hoosick Falls (is a village in Rensselaer County, New York). Parts of upstate New York’s water reserves are bad; it’s not only happening in Flint, Michigan.

6. Go after individuals and firms responsible for flooding our communities with opioids.

7. Reform the criminal justice system; poverty and mental illness should not be a crime in New York State.

8. Make sure that any sale of real estate by churches are approved by the state attorney general before the sale is finalized.

We need to go to the polls and exercise our civic responsibility on Tuesday, November 6th; vote and let our leaders know that we back them in the way that matters most.

etitia James, New York City’s Public Advocate is on fire for New York State residents; she’s not resting on her past accomplishments. She made history in 2014 as the first woman of color to win a citywide position when she won her current position as public advocate.

Prior to this job, she was a city council member, an assistant attorney general and a public defender.

In her current job Letitia introduced legislation last year that prohibits employers in the city from asking about, relying on or verifying a job applicant’s salary history during the hiring process.

This law can help equalize pay for women and men of color because many employers use this information to keep these groups at the lowest level. The New York City Commission on Human Rights recommends that employers focus questions on applicants’ salary demands, skills and qualifications.

Hiring managers need to move away from salary discussions in interviews and instead focus on the applicant’s salary demands. Organizations need to consult with legal counsel to review and modify written policies, employment applications, job postings and any forms used during the hiring

The Elusive Dollar: NYC is Helping Business Owners Reach Affordable and Reliable Capital

A

t the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS), the number one concern that we hear from small businesses is access to capital, both when they are starting and growing. It’s a catch 22. Business owners need capital to build a thriv-

ing business but, they need a thriving business to build capital. Small businesses, especially minority and women- owned businesses, don’t always qualify for a bank loan and are often subjected to predatory lenders as an alternative. SBS is an ally to the city’s over 230,000 small businesses, and ready to help them overcome this major hurdle.

SBS operates seven NYC Business Solutions Centers across the five boroughs that offer nocost, supportive services - including financing assistance. Business owners’ time is valuable and limited – they spend an average of 25 hours just searching

for the right lender. We’ve partnered with a network of 40 lenders to easily connect business owners to affordable and reliable capital. Since the majority of businesses we serve are not qualified for bank financing, we offer connection to non-profit, alternative lenders to access microloans.

Under Mayor de Blasio’s leadership, the City recognizes that an inclusive economy is a thriving economy. Tailored initiatives are available to support underrepresented populations that are vital contributors to our economy, like the Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (M/ WBE) program, which aims

to address historic disparities in City contracting and provide minority and women entrepreneurs with increased opportunities to do business with the City. We are committed to awarding $20 billion in City contracts to M/WBES by the end of Fiscal Year 2025. We’ve already certified over 6,000 M/WBEs – an historic record - and effectively connected firms to over $10 billion in City contracts. But it is not enough to open the door to opportunity through certification; we are providing a path to success for certified firms. Our Contract Financing Loan Fund helps M/WBEs and other small businesses to access

the affordable loans needed to secure lucrative City contracts. Eligible businesses can borrow loans totaling up to $1 million per year at a low three-percent interest rate.

Since access to capital disproportionately hinders women-owned businesses, we’re also helping to address the entrepreneurial gender gap. Approximately half of the City’s women entrepreneurs seek less than $10,000 when launching a business, however traditional financial products are often unavailable in small amounts and non-traditional financial products can come with high interest rates. We offer the City’s first-ever crowdfunding

program to help women entrepreneurs build capital.

The program, called WE Fund: Crowd, has helped over 100 New Yorkers access over $600,000 in 0% interest loans. More than 8,600 lenders from across the globe have contributed to the initiative, with the City investing up to $1,000 for each campaign.

Manhattanville Course Auditing and Lifelong Learners Program

Columbia University funds up to 150 courses each academic year for residents of Manhattanville Houses and Grant Houses and others in the local community.

The programs provide adults not currently enrolled in college with the opportunity to attend selected lectures drawn from University offerings in the arts and sciences. The application deadline for the spring semester is Jan. 5.

Brooklyn Prospect Height Residents Seek to Expand Landmark District

received support from preservationists such as the Historic District Council (“HDC”). Veconi presented for the first time before the entire community board at the meeting, and so far, the campaign has already received more than 600 votes in support through the online petition.

According to the campaign’s website, most of the lots within the district are underbuilt with respect to zoning restrictions.

Density can increase up to 50 percent and still meet zoning regulations — making for an attractive spot for developers who choose to purchase the air rights above existing buildings.

Most of the buildings in the proposed historic district were constructed between 1909 and 1929 (see map). Veconi credits the area as the first densely populated area as new arrivals to Brooklyn sought to live near cultural sites like the Brooklyn Museum, Prospect Park and Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the new underground railway -IRT- that would travel along

Eastern Parkway (currently 2/3/4/5).

The district is between two previously landmarked areas and would be adjacent to the Prospect Heights Historic District, which includes 850 buildings was established in 2009 and spans from Flatbush Avenue to parts of Vanderbilt and Underhill, from Sterling Place as far North as Pacific St., at some places.

Later, in 2015, the LPC approved the third phase of the Crown Heights North Historic District, expanding the large swath of landmarked area to more than 1000 buildings. The district spans between Bedford and Kingston Avenues in some places and north and southbound from Pacific Street to Lincoln Place reaching as far south as Eastern Parkway between New York and Nostrand Avenues.

While the Prospect Heights Landmark District was designated within two years, landmarking can take much longer, Veconi acknowledged.

rooklyn’s Community Board 8 voted in favor to pursue a new landmark district designation in Prospect Heights at its October 11th general meeting. They want to stop developers from using air rights to build on top of existing buildings. The proposed Prospect Heights Apartment House District encompasses 107 buildings from Eastern Parkway to St. Johns/Sterling Place between Washington Avenue and Plaza East for a total of six blocks.

The need to protect the historic architecture and concerns of overdevelopment — especially as it relates to building vertically — is part of what prompted the pursuit to landmark the area, according to members at the October 11th CB8 meeting.

“Given the significant unused development rights in the Prospect Heights Apartment House District, designating the area a New York City landmark is the best way to ensure its buildings will continue to serve as a document of the city’s aspirations for residential living in Brooklyn at the beginning of the 20th Century and be enjoyed by future residents and visitors,” said Gib Veconi, co-chair on the Landmarks Committee of the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council (“PHNDC”).

PHNDC and The Cultural Row Block Association (“CuRBA”) launched the campaign to landmark the area under consideration in late 2017 and has already

arly voting has begun in several states and the shenanigans have also increased. There have been a number of reports coming out across the country about voter disenfranchisement and voter suppression tactics that are negatively impacting African Americans, and it is startling.

In Georgia, for instance, Secretary of State Brian Kemp, who is also running for governor against Democratic opponent Stacey Abrams, who is African American, has been hit with a federal lawsuit after being accused of hampering minority voters from registering prior to the midterm elections on November 6. This is troubling, especially because Kemp is running for governor, while holding the office responsible for handling the important process of voter registration.

The issue of voter disenfranchisement, voter intimidation and voter suppression is not new, just like protecting the voting rights of African Americans has been an ongoing fight for centuries and one that cannot be ignored. Voting matters. Voting makes a difference.

After the Civil War, Black men were elected to the U.S. Congress and the South even elected some Black senators. These political gains and the progress made by Black people as a result of Reconstruction governments in the South, empowered many Blacks financially and socially.

Many Southern Whites knew that if they wanted to reestablish control and political dominance over Black people in this country, they would have to stop Black people from voting by any means necessary.

Thus, the Ku Klux Klan was formed, which came with a primary focus of taking back the South through voter suppression, voter intimidation and voter disenfranchisement.

Fast forward to 2018 and the apple has not

fallen too far from the tree, as it relates to many of the same tactics being used to disenfranchise Black people in this country politically through voter suppression, voter intimidation and voter disenfranchisement.

It is impossible for Black people to be disengaged politically, and then hope to get the best treatment, outcomes or results from the elected officials they failed to engage with while those candidates were running for their respective seats.

Black people must get engaged and must vote.

However, choosing not to vote at all is a completely different situation altogether.

It is detrimental to the growth of the African American community. It does not help, it hurts.

There is a quote that is often referenced when describing someone who is not a part of a major decision that affects them that goes, “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.”

The worst thing African Americans could ever do in the realm of politics is: Nothing.

Have you ever asked yourself why it has been so important to other people to make it difficult for Black people to vote?

Why have so many people and groups poured so much money into getting behind select candidates and political parties? Why are people constantly seeking to suppress the vote? Why would people do anything to steal an election through voter suppression and voter intimidation tactics with an emphasis on disenfranchising African American voters?

It is because Black votes matter — and everyone knows it.

African Americans must know it and must show it on November 6. Black people must show that we are actually “at the table” and are no longer just “on the menu”

come November 6.

To avoid being “on the menu” as the main course meal on someone else’s table, Black people must show up to the polls this election cycle and make their voices heard.

Black people must do this, in spite of the continuous neglect and lack of concentration of reaching Black voters through the mediums they are accustomed to by both political parties. Black people must not rely on others to plead their cause or fight their overall battles for them. Black people must vote.

The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), which represents over 200 Black-owned media companies across the U.S., including the Harlem Community News in New York, has been focused on registering 5 million, new Black voters before the midterm elections and is working collaboratively with other national organizations to fight voter suppression and increase Black voter turnout.

“We want the largest, Black voter turnout in American history,” said NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin Chavis. “Voter suppression is taking place, because we’re voting. But we’re going to overcome voter suppression this year, as this is a payback year for African Americans all over the country at the polls.”

African Americans should use these midterm elections as a beta test for the 2020 Presidential election and use the results as

a tool to make demands and ensure a dedicated seat at the head table prior to 2020. In Texas, straight-ticket ballots will go away, so neither political party will be able to take a lazy approach to proactively educating potential voters on who their candidates are.

More importantly, candidates of either party will no longer be able to simply skate in to office on party affiliation alone and must put in the necessary ground work and investments to make potential voters more aware of their position on the issues that matter to African Americans. The Black vote should no longer be considered a guaranteed vote.

Choosing not to vote leads to dire consequences for African Americans.

Whether you believe your vote matters or not — and it most certainly does — every Black person will have to adhere to any law that is passed and every decision that is made by the elected body of representatives who hold every seat.

There is absolutely no level of complaining or reactionary response that will change that.

There are no acceptable excuses when it comes to voting. Either Black people vote or reap the consequences of not voting.

Every Black person should get engaged in politics if they wish to bring about change.

So, this is your chance to make a difference.

Say it – I Will Vote!

Now go do it! Cast your vote early or be sure to vote on November 6.

n Wednesday, October 24th, 2018 community leaders, elected officials and everyday citizens that remember when he lived in the development gathered at 10 East 138th Street inside the Riverton Square housing development located in Harlem to witness the naming of its community center after New York City’s only black mayor and his bride, The Honorable David N. & Joyce Dinkins Riverton Center.

The dedication ceremony was billed as “an intimate dedication ceremony and reception” hosted by The Riverton Tenants Association and A & E Real Estate from 2pm to 4 pm, however, the center was jammed packed with well-wishers and people who still have much love the Dinkins family.

He touched many residents in the audience when he further stated, “Riverton was and still is the heart and soul of Harlem, a place where working families can live affordably in New York City. I’m very pleased with all the improvements to its beautiful grounds and the investment being made in the new community center. I’m confident that Riverton will remain a vibrant Harlem enclave long into the future.”

Audience members got a chance to walk around and check out recent renovations to the common space areas made by the new owners in consultation with the Riverton Tenants Association including the enhancement of the grounds, outdoor patio area with tables and chairs, landscaping, new offices and meeting areas, a TV, Apple desktop computers and laptops, restrooms, athletic spaces and playground area.

The new kitchen area was

christened by Renaissance Restaurant, which catered the food for the event and Chef/owner Cisse was in attendance leading his culinary team personally. The new community center will offer programming for kids and seniors in the complex through Harlem Grown and JASA. Harlem Grown will host programs on healthy food, urban gardening and farming for Riverton youth including homework help and classes on environmental stewardship. JASA will host program on health and fitness including Chair yoga, walking and salsa classes plus movie screenings, technology and computer instruction for Riverton seniors. Programming at the center will also include on-site social workers three days a week and nurse’s hours two days a week.

Last year, Rotary Club of Harlem and Active Plus coordinated with The Outreach Program for a community-based and volunteer Food Packing event. The result: 135 volunteers 2833 bags of nutritious food 17,000 meals total in only FOUR HOURS 15000 meals distributed to SEVEN Food Pantries in Harlem 2000 meals distributed to Hurricane Irma and Maria affected islands

Alzheimer's Disease Beautifully Addressed in DOT

T

heartbreaking to see the person who taught you life lessons and helped you to become the person you are today, suddenly need to be watched over like a child.

It’s hard to speak aggressively to a person who reared you and taught you to respect your elders.

Dotty’s story is one that is so common in our community.

Especially the family’s reaction to it. The oldest daughter being overwhelmed by it and the younger siblings being in denial of how desperate the situation is.

What Domingo’s story demonstrates is that you might not be able to stop what is happening to your family member, but you need to try to have patience and give them love and understanding. Something that at times can be a daunting task.

The illness doesn’t just effect the lives of the family, it also effects friends of the family, which is the case with a family friend named Jackie. Everyone gets to see up-close and personal how Alzheimer’s is a life altering illness. There are so many emotional moments during this production—you will laugh, cry, be moved and your heart touched.

You will see things that you recognize either with your family members or with friends’ family members. This is an illness that robs a person of their mind, memories and sometimes their

dignity.

The cast is outstanding.

Denise Burse tears at your heart strings as Dotty. Tinasha Kajese-Bolden gives a powerful performance as Shelly. Gilbert Glenn Brown is touching as Donnie. Amber A. Harris is feisty and funny as Averie, who is often the perfect comic relief.

Lee Osorio is the husband of Dotty’s son Donnie and he gives a stunningly, beautiful and caring performance. Rhyn McLemore Saver is stirring as Jackie, the friend that comes with her own issues, but knows to put Dotty first over her own troubles.

Benedetto Robinson plays Fidel, a Russian caretaker for Dotty and gives a memorable delivery of the role.

Seeing this production at the Billie Holiday Theatre is something that doesn’t surprise me because this theatre has always prided itself on presenting productions that are very meaningful, entertaining, but also educational for the Black community.

You need to make plans to go and see the show. It is playing through November 18. The scenic design by Moriah and Isabel Curley-Clay is astounding. Also, when you go there you will be very happy as you sit in this theatre which has just undergone a $4.1 million renovation. For tickets call 1-866-811-4111.

here are some plays that you see that touch your core, they touch a special place in your heart, because they so imitate real life and things that you have experienced yourself. That was the case as I watched “Dot”, the Colman Domingo play being performed at the Billie Holiday Theatre in Brooklyn. The Billie Holiday Theatre decided to open its 51st Season—what a record—with a play about something very real and devastating in the Black community and that is Alzheimer’s disease. Domingo gives the audience a chance to understand this illness in depth. Mesmerizing direction by Kenny Leon makes you not want to blink, because you don’t want to miss a moment!

You get to know Dotty, a mother of three and grandmother of one, who sometimes knows what’s happening around her and is clear as a bell, but other times goes into her own little world.

The saddest part of this story is that Dotty realizes what is happening to her and she feels out of control, which she actually is.

It is so tragic how a person could have been someone who was a take charge person, but due to Alzheimer’s is now someone whose everyday activities, other people have to be in charge of.

Here you have a mother who is being told what to do by her oldest daughter Shelly, but it’s for her own safety.

Dotty’s daughter Shelly is her main caregiver and is seeking the assistance of her brother Donnie and younger sister Averie. I could relate so much to this story and the moments when the mother fades out of reality as my own mother suffered from dementia in her final years. It is

ovember is American Diabetes Month, and a good time to sort fact from fiction regarding this serious disease.

Here are three common diabetes myths -debunked, with the help of Nutrisystem Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs) and Courtney McCormick, dietitian for Nutrisystem.

Myth: I’m a healthy weight -- I can’t get diabetes.

Fact:Although there’s a clear connection between being overweight or obese and developing type 2 diabetes, genetics and other lifestyle factors can also play a role.

Prediabetes can sometimes be an early-stage development of type 2 diabetes, and its risk factors (other than weight) include: • Polycystic ovary syndrome: Fairly common in women, stay attuned to symptoms such as increased hair growth, weight gain and an inconsistent menstrual cycle.

• Older age: Prediabetes risk increases after age 45, according to the Mayo Clinic.

• Family medical history: A family history of blood sugar-related health complications increases prediabetes risk.

• Gestational diabetes: Women who expe-

rience gestational diabetes (diabetes developed during pregnancy) are more likely to develop prediabetes. Additionally, if your baby weighed more than nine pounds at birth, you’re at greater risk, according to the Mayo Clinic. Men, aren’t off the hook. This increased risk extends to the children of women who had gestational diabetes.

• Inadequate sleep: Certain conditions causing sleep disruptions can be a recipe for insulin resistance.

Myth: People develop diabetes because they eat too much sugar.

Fact: Although con-

suming excess calories can contribute to being overweight, which is associated with type 2 diabetes, sugar is not the singular cause of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is the result of genetics and additional unknown factors and type 2 diabetes is the result of a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors.

Myth: If I have diabetes, I can’t have carbs or dessert.

Fact:Generally speaking, individuals with diabetes can follow the same healthy diet recommended for the general public and can even enjoy sweet treats in small portions on special occasions.

Carbs are a necessary part of a healthy meal plan. Just pay attention to portions. Optimal carbohydrate counts will vary by person, but the American Diabetes Association recommends starting with 45-60 grams per meal, and tweaking depending on how your body re-

sponds.

Some good carbs to consider? Whole grain breads, pastas, rice and cereals, plus starchy vegetables like potatoes, peas and corn. Fruits, beans, milk and yogurt also count toward daily carbohydrates. On the Nutrisystem D plan, which is designed for people living with type 2 diabetes, milk and yogurt are considered “PowerFuels,” even though they provide some carbohydrates. Many people are advised to enjoy these foods with fruit to prevent nocturnal hypoglycemia.

It’s important to have a good understanding of the risks, causes and precautions associated with diabetes. Although preventative measures can’t be taken against type 1 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association, research suggests that you can lower your risk for type 2 diabetes by 58 percent by: • Losing seven percent of your body weight • Exercising moderately 30 minutes a day, five days a week Eat well, be well and know your risk factors for diabetes, this month, and every month of the year!

NBLCA’s Gospel Extravaganza Concert at Aaron Davis Hall

he National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc. (“NBLCA”) has been working over the last 30 years to address and proactively fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic and other health disparities facing African Americans.

On Thursday, October 25th, 2018 they hosted a Gospel Extravaganza concert at Aaron Davis Hall located on the campus of the City College of New York.

The ticket for the event cost $100 and the show’s host was Liz Black, radio personality on Sunday

Mornings on 107.5 WBLS NY’s only R&B station 7 am – 8 am “Inspirations with Liz Black,” and 1190 WLIB NY’s only 24-hour gospel station 12 pm – 3 pm. Greetings came from board of director chair Johnny Ford, vice chair Deborah Wafer and remarks from President and CEO C. Virginia Fields.

Live performances began with 2018 Grammy nominee JJ Hairston and Youthful Praise who were nominated for best gospel song “You Deserve It,” and named number one in 2017 on four Billboard magazine charts. The headline

act was the Richard Smallwood and his singers. He is Grammy nominated multiple times, Stellar and Dove award winning songwriter and musician. The group’s most popular and inspirational tunes include “Total Praise”, “Center of My Joy” and “I Love The Lord.”

In between the opening and headline acts NBLCA gave out two “Choose Life” awards. Amida Care received the first award; it’s a private non-profit Medicaid Special Needs Health Plan (SNP) that provides comprehensive coverage and coordinated care to people liv-

Some interesting facts brought out during the program is that African Americans make only 12% of the U.S. populations, however, we make up 45% of new HIV cases and African American women represent 64% of new infections.

The funds raised go to benefit the organization’s extensive programs and services for communities of color living with and impacted by HIV/AIDS and other health disparities.

Posing Modernity proposes that the changing representation of the black female figure has been central to the development of modernism. The exhibition brings to light littleknown connections between the avant-garde circles of 19th-century Paris and free black Parisians. Posing Modernity also traces the impact of Manet’s reconsideration of the black model and of Matisse visiting Harlem jazz clubs and later creating portraits of black dancers as icons of modern beauty. The exhibition sets these and other works in dialogue with the “New Negro” portraiture style with which diverse Harlem Renaissance artists— such as Charles Alston, William H. Johnson, and Laura Wheeler Waring—defied racial stereotypes.

Fresh. The evening gave the church a platform to introduce themselves to the community with education on services they offer and to inform of other events.

Doug E. Fresh has been speaking about his affiliation with the Church of Scientology for nearly a decade but some were surprisingly surprised to hear of his association. Warmly known as Dougie, has been public in his role with the church as they promote

Exposing the “Black Tax” and Finding Solutions

n October 17 Shawn D. Rochester, author of “Black Tax: The cost of being Black in America” presented his research on the reality of financial discrimination faced by Black Americans. The Harlem Business Alliance sponsored the event which took place at MIST Harlem.

Mr. Rochester began his presentation by acknowledging the “imperious situation” of the current Black American financial state with 6 million jobs and 1.4 businesses missing from the Black community. He referenced studies done by Pew Research Center demonstrating stereotypes and racist ideology of mainstream White Americans that puts the blame on Black Amer-

icans themselves for “not trying hard enough” or “using racism as an excuse.”

In his book, which is divided into three parts the Current Black Tax, the Historical Black Tax and what can we do about the Black Tax - Rochester dispels these misconceptions using facts to demonstrate the financial burden Black Americans exclusively carry due to systematic racism.

Since the Transatlantic Slave Trade, “over $70 trillion of resources were extracted from and/or not provided to African Americans,” starting with $50 trillion in slave labor between the years of 1619-1865.

Another example of the historical roots of financial discrimination Rochester presented on was the system of sharecropping that

arose after the emancipation proclamation, creating a life of perpetual debt for Black families as well as vagrancy laws that imprisoned Black people living on the street and forcing them into a prison system that exploited them for free labor.

Additionally, Mr. Rochester pointed out policies that provided allotted gains for European-descendant families exclusively, such as the Homestead Act of 1862, which provided 160 acres of land to white families free-of-charge, as long as they lived on and worked the land for 5 years.

Rochester shared his personal choices to invest in his community by working with a Black broker when he was looking to

buy a home; a Black car dealer, who was present at the event, and buying his shoes that are a creation of a Black designer.

“When we have to deplore resources, we look for high quality Black talent to do it,” he said. Leaving the audience with the provocation, “What is your plan to increase the economic development in the Black community?”

Six-year-old cancer survivor from Brooklyn gets special back to school surprise

A

s the kids returned to school this year, excited to see their old friends, one 6-year-old boy’s appearance at Pave Academy Charter School, in Red Hook Brooklyn, was especially poignant. As a childhood cancer survivor who’s had to miss time away from school to undergo life changing treatment, every single day he gets to be at school is a miracle.

Shortly after Shaire’s fifth birthday, his parents began to worry when he started experiencing unusual symptoms. It wasn’t long before they brought him to the Children’s Hospital to see what was wrong. After undergoing several tests, he was diagnosed with leukemia and

began aggressive treatment right away.

Tragically, just two weeks into his treatment, Shaire had a

stroke and went blind. He spent the next five months in the hospital, thankfully gaining most of his sight back. He began walk-

ing again for the first time on the day he went home in April 2015.

Treatment for Shaire lasted more than three years and as of June 2018, Shaire has been cancer free. His cancer journey hasn’t been easy, and Shaire is now legally blind and still struggles with walking, but he never stopped smiling and seeing the good in every situation.

Today, Shaire is back at school and adjusting to his new routine. Despite several side effects and countless hospital visits, he continues to keep a positive attitude and push through with indescribable bravery. He has had to work extra hard to keep up with schoolwork as best he could and he continues to beat the odds.

“Shaire has proven to everyone around him just how strong he really is,” says Shaire’s mom, Sade. “He perseveres every single day to stay on top of his work and even attends Huntington learning Center on the weekends to get extra help. I am so proud of this little guy he is truly a hero and inspires me every day.”

More than 6,000 schoolage kids are affected by blood cancers each year. Returning to school after cancer treatment is part of that return to normalcy that these kids crave; it can also make the child wonder if he will be accepted by his classmates again as a friend.

As part of a nationwide initiative to bring smiles and confidence to childhood cancer survi-

vors heading back to school this fall, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which funds blood cancer research and lifesaving treatments, has teamed up with Burlington Stores to offer these child survivors $100 in new clothes. On October 23rd Shaire took his surprise shopping spree at the Burlington Store on 625 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217.

In addition, through December 1, in more than 640 Burlington stores nationwide, customers are encouraged to donate $1 or more at checkout to support LLS’s goal to create a world without blood cancer. The partnership has raised more than $32 million to date.
