his past Saturday we celebrated the 90th birthday of Community Activist Reverend Robert Royal held at Our Children Foundation on 125th Street. The packed house included clergy, politicians, community leaders, family and friends of Rev. Royal.

Guest included former Congressman Charles B. Rangel, Assemblyman Rev. Al Taylor, Congressman Bob Levine, Jackie Rowe Adams, Honorable Judge Tanya R. Kennedy, Judge J. Machelle Sweeting, Greater Harlem Chamber President Lloyd Williams among others.

Toastmasters for the event were Bishop E. Alexander and Mary Sweeting. Guests offered remarks that praised Rev. Royal as a dedicated community activist and living legend who continues to advocate.

I served on the board of the Foot Center of New York with Rev Royal for several years. Rev Royal continued to advocate for good services for the community as a member of the board.

Judge Sweeting presented Rev Royal with an engraved Gable. Al Taylor presented him with a proclamation and the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” the old way and to Stevie Wonder’s version.

Rev Royal humbly spoke of his beginnings, born in 1929 to a 15 yearold unwed mother who left him on the sidewalk in Harlem. He then went into foster care and had more than 9 foster parents.

He said he has a lot to be thankful for. He told the

Wilson's Statement on the Extension of Temporary Protected Status Programs for Immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Sudan

ashington, D.C.– Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson issued the following statement in response to the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) programs for immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Sudan until January 2020. The extension was made to comply with a court injunction issued last October by the U.S. Circuit Court for the Northern District of California after the Trump administration sought to end the programs.

“I am pleased that this

extension will give hundreds of thousands of hardworking immigrants a temporary reprieve from deportation–with temporary being the operative word. DHS is patting it-

self on the back for complying with a court order, but I have no doubt that the administration will continue its efforts to terminate TPS. “It is incredulous that

have introduced a bipartisan resolution to extend Temporary Protected Status to Haitian nationals until Haiti has demonstrably recovered from a series of natural and manmade disasters.”

The Florida lawmaker sits on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Education and the Workforce Committee, and chairs the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions.

Brooklyn Schools Celebrate Black History Month

T

he celebration of Black History Month in Brooklyn schools has been a yearly event for decades, learning of great Black leaders, the struggle for civil rights and justice, and an understanding of Black culture. Usually, the month is a time to acknowledge the resilience of Black people.

Clearly, Black History Month in 2019 had a lot to deal with, and it was a wonder on how schools in Brooklyn approached the topic. This is especially so considering, earlier this month, Black Lives Matter Brooklyn took part in a rally for improvement on how

Black history is taught in schools.

With over 400 schools ranging in grades K – 12 in the borough, the Department of Education was contacted about how the average public-school student in Brooklyn has been taught about this subject. DOE spokesperson Miranda Barbot explained, “Chancellor Carranza has prioritized advancing equity, reducing racial disparities, and expanding culturally responsive education across New York City public schools, and we’ve made progress but acknowledge there is more work to do. Black history is celebrated across our school

communities, including in our social studies teaching throughout the year in grades K-12.” When asked further on what was meant on there being “more work to do,” Barbot clarified it was “to advance equity, reduce racial disparities, and expand culturally responsive education.”

Next came charter schools, which Brooklyn has the most of compared to the rest of the City. Ascend Charter Schools, which has 15 schools, including one high school, was contacted but did not respond.

Success Academy, which has sixteen schools operating from Benson-

hurst to Bed-Stuy to Bergen Beach, responded saying, “We view black history as simply American history, and we study it year-round — not just in February,” explained a Success Academy spokesperson. “In grades K-12, we make sure scholars explore history in a way that gives them a deep understanding that history is not a series of events led and narrated by white men but is rather an ongoing and complex narrative of diverse experiences, perspectives, and voices.”

Among the ways Success Academy’s embraces black history is not just through history lessons, which teach

much more than just slavery, Jim Crow era and the civil rights movement, but also through black culture.

Some schools have Spirit Days, in which students, or scholars, dress up as their favorite historical figure.

Others visit various museums. At SA Fort Greene, Batingua Arts gave an interactive dance with drumming and singing. Finally, some schools studied Maya Angelou’s poem, “Still, I Rise” and wrote short personal narratives responding to the poem’s theme of overcoming challenges.

certification preparation and job development opportunities to increase financial literacy and empower members and their businesses are top priorities for the organization. NYS is the third largest government spender behind the federal government and the State of California and MWBEs certification and doing business with NYS and NYC agencies should be a top priority for CACCI’s member businesses.

makers began with a little retrospective of the movers and shakers of African American and Caribbean background when he first came to the United States and how their sacrifices and hardships, they endured paved the way for all people of color to follow. Names like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Shirley Chisolm, Tom Jones, Mayor David N. Dinkins, Jackie Robinson, Hon. Charles Rangel, Carl L. McCall, Percy Sutton, Basil Patterson, Major Owens, Walter Thompson and Una Clarke to name a few.

As always closing remarks were given before participants began business networking, exchanging business cards and phone numbers as well as posing for a group photo before the meeting was adjourned.

Breakfast Kickoff Meeting for the 5th Annual Harlem EatUp Festival

n Tuesday, February 26th, 2019 the kickoff breakfast for the 5th Annual Harlem EatUp Festival was held at Ginny’s Supper Club located on the lower level of Red Rooster Harlem located at 310 Lenox Avenue. This year’s weeklong festival will held from Monday, May 13th through Sunday, May 19, 2019. The festival offers an exciting sampling of Harlem’s sights, flavors and sounds; from culinary artists of the kitchen, as well as artists on canvas, stage and streets.

Festival co-founders Marcus Samuelsson and Herb Karlitz started the program off by introducing themselves to the attendees and explaining how they took a whole week off after last year’s festival before they began planning this year’s

festival.

Dawn Padmore, VP of Culinary Marketing at Karlitz & Company and executive producer of the Harlem EatUp Festival took over the program, introduced her team and then started to lay out plans for this year’s festival.

Festival goers can continue to enjoy the Dine in Harlem signature dinner party experiences at select Harlem restaurants and chefs. Some restaurants will continue to host some of the biggest national culinary stars in their kitchens. The Harlem Stroll, which consists of the Ultimate Grand Tasting (ticketed for adults 21 years old and over) and the Marketplace (free admission with pay as you go options and open to people under 21 years old) will be back with the children’s zone and the cooking demonstrations with top chefs will continue to take place on

Saturday and Sunday outdoors in Morningside Park.

Festival beneficiaries are Harlem EatUp Foundation, Citymeals on Wheels, Harlem Park to Park and the four Historic Harlem Parks. These four non-profit organizations will receive the net proceeds from the festival.

Here are 10 ideas to get you started: 1. Write down your financial goals and post them somewhere prominent, such as your fridge. These can be small goals, like “I will bring lunch

to work three days a week,” or bigger goals, like “I will pay off my student loan.”

2. Calculate your net worth to get an overall picture of your financial standing. Your net worth is everything you own

3. Update (or create) your budget showing what money is coming in and what’s going out. Make sure it’s not in the red, meaning you’re spending more than you’re earning.

4. Consider opening a Christmas club-type savings account to pay for big-ticket personal expenses. Originally pioneered during the Great Depression, Christmas clubs were financial accounts people add-

ed cash to throughout the year.

They then used these savings to buy holiday gifts, helping to avoid the holiday spending “hangover.” You can create your own by automating savings each month, ideally in an interest-bearing account. If you save $75 a month, you’ll have $900 over the course of a year (or even more, if you earn interest).

5. Start gathering tax documents like W-2 and 1099 forms and receipts for charitable contributions. Taxes are right around the corner. Do them early if you can.

6. Check your credit report.

ver 1,000 gymnasts from around the country came to compete in The Harlem Gymnastics Invitational (HGI) at the HCZ (Harlem Children’s Zone) Harlem Armory at 40 W. 142nd St. At the weekend long event from February 22nd-24th, hosted by the Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation (WHGF), boys and girls aged 3-17 years competed in areas like artistic, rhythmic, and trampoline and tumbling from various teams across the country. Hall of Fame Rhythmic Gymnast Wendy Hilliard, founded The Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation in 1996.

The WHGF has provided free gymnastics to over 17,000 urban youth in New York City.

With huge plush mats, balance beams, and trampolines covering almost every inch of the Harlem Armory, numerous young gymnasts competed to impress judges and earn the support from their coach, family, and fellow gymnasts.

Gymnastics apparel, refreshments and young women empowering products were for sale at the event. Some of the vendors at HGI knew Wendy Hilliard personally, making it more of a community event in supporting young talented gymnasts. Aliou Lo, an African vendor, tutors Hilliard’s son. Lo and his family’s table called, AGOWA (Authentic Goods from West Africa), sold handmade baskets made by women in Senegal. The baskets, made from sweet grass and other raw materials, is a source of income to 200 women and their families back in Senegal. These handmade baskets come in all colors, shapes, and sizes ranging from $10 to $160.

Rayshine Harris, another vendor selling his books at the event, is close friends with Hilliard. His book Teal The Heroine Princess is a rhyming book that empowers young women and helps them gain self-confidence. His inspiration comes from his

daughter Olivia, who is a part of her father’s tumbling sport team, “Shine Tumblers” based in New Jersey. Harris is a 15th time world champion and in the Hall of Fame for Tumbling.

While other family members were cheering and clapping for their loved one’s performance, gymnast mom Kendra Bruno, took a knee and steadily recorded her daughter Jordyn Bruno’s Tumbling performance. “She was really nervous to do this,” explains Bruno.

her plans to go to UCLA for their gymnastic team and looks up to American artistic gymnast, Gabby Douglas. Bruno won third place in her Tumbling competition.

Registration Coordinator for the WHGF Samantha Villata, said that working here is a unique experience.

“Working here is quite unique because it is a small and tight knit organization...

It has been a lot of fun, and a great working experience as I have gotten close to the families.”

to feel recognized on the award stand during the award ceremonies. There are up to ten places at each event, in each age group, for participants to get the chance to be awarded. Mom of young gymnast, Ty-la Morris supports her children in anything they do. “Ty-la loves gymnastics. Everything Simone Biles wants to do, she wants to do it too. She looks just like her too.”

Hilliard was featured in an article “The decades of black gymnasts who paved the way for Simone Biles” by Fusion.net back in 2016 as one of the black gym-

nasts that made history for the American artistic gymnast Simone Biles to get to where she is today. Hilliard started her foundation in Harlem to provide low-cost and free gymnastic classes to communities that don’t have the same opportunities as the sport’s predominantly white background.

Diabetic shoes are custom fitted for specific troublesome areas of the foot. Dr. Iorio’s conclusion was specific, “if all other conservative treatments do not work, then only, is surgery to be considered.”

A lift or orthotic insert and the height of the heel is important for agility in the gait (how we walk) and how the foot hits the ground.

Dr. Maxwell, adorned in red from head to toe, concluded the program with a commendation. She explained, though most celebrations are focused only on Black History throughout February, it is also Heart Month and she is paying homage to Les Payne, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, founder of the National Association of Black Journalists; four decades of excellence with Newsday speaking truth across all boards, who expired from a heart attack. Following a rendering of accolades on Payne as the man, the mission and the message, Maxwell read “The Dash” by Linda Ellis. The beauty of the poem implies it is not the date of birth or even the date of death that matters so greatly in life, but rather the hyphen between.

Dr. Maxwell introduced Violet Payne, their son Jamal and daughter Tamara who were present. Jamal Payne spoke about his father, his superhero, a man born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Tuscaloosa meaning “Black Warrior” and Les Payne was truly that. We look forward to the soon to be released book “The Dead are Rising” about Malcolm X, a twenty-nine-year endeavor written

by Les Payne.

r. Marcella Maxwell is the leader of the Golden Life Ministry for Seniors at the Abyssinian Baptist Church, pastored by the Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III. Her workshops have taken seniors on a journey to age gracefully with knowledge from those in the know. The proof of the value of such presentations is evident in the mass crowds that fill the space.

The latest workshop focusing on PROPER SHOES FOR HEALTHY FEET with The Community Partnership Forum and ENESLOW Shoes, The Foot Center of New York, was held at the church on Friday, February 22, 2019.

Our feet were made for walking, the average foot consists of 26 bones, 35 joints, 107 ligaments and at least 18 tendons and muscles. ¼ of all bones are in the feet. Perhaps you are like me, you never gave much thought to parts of the foot beyond the arch and five toes on each one.

Following the continental breakfast at 9:00 am, the program began at 10:00 with greetings from Nancy Houghton, Health Advocates for Older People, which promotes safe and healthy aging designed to facilitate independent living, physical well-being and greater social interaction. Noting that “our feet unite all of us” Houghton introduced Dr. Maxwell.

With her usual enthusiasm, Maxwell welcomed her faithful followers for their support and interest in programs and information for living their best lives.

The first presenter was Dr. Anthony Iorio, DMP, MPH Podiatrist, NY College of Podiatry. Dr. Iorio expressed the importance of foot health, advising that the under parts of the foot must be regularly checked for any ulcerations or hot spots. Infections leading to amputations are prevalent in diabetics. Iorio stated the myth of diabetes; if you have been told you are pre-diabetic, you have diabetes. It is not the diabetes that kills you, it is the complications of the disease and it is treatable. Numerous questions were engaged: Bunions are deviations of the bone and are hereditary. Hammertoes are hereditary deformities of the toe with a callus on the top from the rubbing of a shoe. The length of toenails is crucial to preventing infections, they must have

arch is Women’s History Month. For most of my life, I did not relate to Women’s History Month. I am woman hear me roar – no doubt – but I did not get it until recently. The Time’s Up & Me Too Movement ushered in new voices, new perspectives and re-energized women who have been challenging the masculine controlled, male dominated systems for decades. My challenge is that for every push, there is a pull. For every shift, there is a struggle. For every get, there is a give.

This new wave is shaking up common perspectives. My perspective was that women could do anything.

I did not think women did everything but that we could if we wanted to do so. I think I still believe that. I think we have always paid a high price for whatever we attempted to do, but if we were willing to pay that price, then we could do it. Perhaps I never really tried for the golden ring. I may never have reached higher than I was comfortable reaching. Perhaps I was never driven to challenge a closed door. I honestly do not know and I am unsure

if I want to find out.

I have been watching my bonus daughters lately and they have high bars they are reaching. They travel the world in the same way that other young people ride the subway. They take on new professional responsibilities by pushing and pulling. They struggle or shift by deciding to have children, not have children, freeze their eggs, choose their mates, forego mates all based upon whatever lifestyle they are embracing. It is fascinating to watch.

Just as fascinating is observing young people who refuse to embrace

the male/female gender designation. I admit I do not understand it all.

I am grateful to have people I can turn to who explain the LGBTQIA lingo, patiently answer my questions, and in general recognize I am of a generation that has a different definition of identity. It feels familiar in a way that I believe grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles viewed my generation and the doors that opened to us.

This month, as ceremonies are held throughout the country, I wonder how those who embrace a gender-less designation view Women’s History

Month. Women have a history. We do have genders. Based upon the gives that others gave, we are able to get new opportunities.

In every area, our individual and collective identities are being challenged. It is about identity, acceptance and change.

Who knows where we will end up? One thing is for sure. Regardless of what others think of you, you must first accept yourself. Celebrate yourself. Honor yourself. Know your own identity and history before you can expect someone else to.

Tackling the High Cost of Student Loan Debt (Statepoint)

T

here’s no way around it: Americans are drowning in student loan debt, collectively owing $1.5 trillion. Rising college costs mean that number isn’t likely to drop much in the next few decades.

The average student borrower takes out around $26,000 in loans over the course of a bachelor’s degree -- debt that’s impossible to discharge in bankruptcy, difficult to have forgiven and increasingly unlikely to be fully repaid on schedule.

Here’s a look at the costs of that debt and what’s being done to lessen the crisis.

The Direct Cost New research shows that student debt load is making Americans less likely to buy homes or start families, and

more likely to live at home and take jobs just to make ends meet, instead of the more lucrative positions for which their degrees prepared them.

Short-term solutions include deferring loans by returning to school, or consolidating or borrowing from private lenders, which ends up making the problem worse. For students graduating into a tight job market whose credit ratings are impacted by the amounts they owe, loan debt can remain their chief financial concern for decades.

What’s more, the expanding student loan bubble could rattle the entire American economy in similar ways to the 2008 housing crisis, if borrowers default on loans in large numbers.

The Hidden Cost

The direct costs of student loan debt are obvious, but hidden costs often prevent lower-income students from pursuing the highest-value degrees.

Because the most selective, prestigious institutions are also the most expensive, those institutions are disproportionately populated by students from affluent families able to afford the burden of early-career debt. And the recent trend of “differential pricing,” in which tuition costs are dictated by a student’s field of study, has had an effect on enrollment in high-employment fields, potentially scaring off the students who could benefit the most from an in-demand degree.

Easing the Crisis Organizations such as Scholarship America are working to alleviate the cri-

sis. As the nation’s largest provider of private-sector scholarships, they deliver their most direct impact by giving students funding for higher education -- $264 million last year, and more than $4 billion over its history.

The organization is also lending support to nationwide efforts to reduce de-

pendence on student loans.

They’ve mobilized a network of postsecondary institutions, or Collegiate Partners, that agree to not punish scholarship recipients with reductions in financial aid; and their Dreamkeepers Emergency Financial Assistance program gives students facing unexpected expenses an alternative to

loans. President and CEO Robert C. Ballard sits on the National Advisory Board of the College Promise Campaign, which is developing innovative public-private partnerships to help students earn their associate degrees tuition-free.

“We work with partners to incorporate mentoring, tutoring and financial literacy education into scholarship awards in an effort to help students persist and graduate rather than drop out with debt or get stuck short of a degree,” said Ballard.

No single funder, college or organization will solve the student loan bubble crisis, and it won’t happen overnight. But by working together, the public, private and higher education sectors can continue to reduce student loan debt.

n Sunday, March 10 we will gain an extra hour of daylight each day! So, I started to think about what that meant to me in my life and wonder what I was going to do with it. Imagine an extra seven hours of extended light each week. It’s almost like getting another full day, or is it? More time to do more

things? Whatever happened to “there are only but so many hours in a day?” How do you squeeze an “extra hour” into a conventional twenty-four?

There are still only twenty-four hours in a day, right?

Uh oh, too many questions and not enough time to get philosophical right now!

It’s easy enough to get caught up in everyone else’s life and forget that you have one too. So, although it’s always tempting to give time to someone or something else, think about putting yourself first for a change.

You might find that loving and spending time with yourself allows you to prioritize and put other responsibilities and obligations in better perspective. Of course, I have a few suggestions to get you started: · Make a standing appointment to have a manicure and pedicure and keep it. · Grab a blanket and go to the nearest park or your backyard to just lie there and look at the sky and watch the clouds go by. · Go fly a kite! · Sit on a beach, by a pond,

stream, fountain anywhere soothing with an exotic drink. · Rent a convertible and take a nice drive in the country with the top down. · Keep a daily journal or finish writing the novel you started years ago. · Go to an art gallery, museum, the zoo, botanical gardens for some culture, peace and quiet. · Contemplate your navel! · Take a self guided tour of antique and thrift shops. · Start a decorating project. · Learn to meditate. · Book a facial, massage or multiple spa treatments. · Listen closely to hear the beat and sound of your life’s rhythm.

Go ahead, extend that invitation to yourself right now to take time with and for yourself. Don’t give your time to anyone else; be totally selfish with it. Surely you can give yourself one hour a day; if not—don’t you feel it’s about

time! Think about it. See you next week.

Y

ou can be anything you want to be!

That’s what you were told, growing up: you could do anything, try everything, and be anybody you wanted to be, if you tried. Set your sights on something, and it was yours – so in the new novel “Inventing Victoria” by Tonya Bolden, a young girl wants a better life.

Five-year-old Essie was embarrassed half to death.

High in her attic room, she could still hear the noises of the “uncles” that her Mamma was entertaining but the “uncles” were all white men, which made no

sense and Essie hated it.

It should’ve come as no surprise to anybody that she wanted to go live at Ma Clara’s house, where she never had to worry about food or “uncles.”

At thirteen, Essie had enough.

Ma Clara had helped nourish her mind and her soul, and Essie knew the time was right for her to leave Mamma by taking a job at Abby Bowfield’s boardinghouse. There, she made her first friend and she dared to dream of a happy future – as if, for a girl whose Mamma escaped from slavery, that wasn’t impossible.

And then the impossible happened.

Miss Dorcas Vashon,

who had Room 4 at Miss Abby’s on permanent hold, took a liking to Essie and made her an offer she couldn’t refuse: She’d take Essie away from Savannah and make her into a lady, teach her, form her, correct her speech, and fix her slouch. In exchange, Essie would have to give up everything she’d ever known.

And so, a girl named Essie stepped away from Miss Abby’s boardinghouse one day, and became Victoria.

At eighteen, Victoria tried not to look back at her life. Doing so was “excessively ill-bred” but she couldn’t help it. With the guidance of

Frederick Douglass is here. James Wormley is mentioned, as is O.S.B. Wall and John Mercer Langston, and Elizabeth Keckley makes dresses for Victoria. These people flow through the tale like it’s an everyday thing to nineteenth-century folks but for modern readers, Bolden makes their presence feel like visits from royalty.
