NNPA CALLS FOR APPOINTMENT OF A SPECIAL FEDERAL PROSECUTOR ON RACIALLY MOTIVATED POLICE KILLINGS

arlier this week, the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), the nation’s largest trade association of African American-owned newspapers and media companies, issued an urgent call and demand that President Barack H. Obama and U.S Attorney General Loretta Lynch appoint a Special Federal Prosecutor in the wake of the police killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

The NNPA also expresses sincere condolences to the families of the police officers who were unjustly killed in Dallas, Texas.

“The killings of African Americans in Louisiana and Minnesota during the past week represent an escalating national pattern of fatal police killings that appear to be racially motivated. These incidents are not isolated local trag-

edies, but are the terrible growing manifestations of a deadly national system of racism in the criminal justice system that needs to be effectively challenged and changed,” said Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the NNPA. “There are, today, too many African American families and communities that continue to endure police brutality and violence across the United States. This is a national crisis that demands immediate federal intervention to both investigate and to prosecute police officers, who continue to commit these wanton racially motivated killings.”

Chavis continued: “We, therefore, demand that a Special Federal Prosecutor be immediately appointed by the United States Department of Justice. To date, unfortunately, local investigations and prosecutions have been ineffective and

have not insured equal justice. The Special Federal Prosecutor has to be independent and impartial. We have heard from many of our NNPA member publishers throughout the nation who all expressed profound disgust and moral outrage about these brutalities. We will not be silent in the face of these continued injustices.

We demand action by the federal government now.”

The reform of the criminal justice system in America requires more intellectual honesty in the national dialogue about race, inequality and injustice. The NNPA will

he housing market continues to heat up. Many prospective first time home buyers are entering into the heat of the battle. New home buyers are purchasing property at a record-setting pace. HARLEM SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL’S “MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING”

oza Rivers/New Heritage Theatre Group, and Take Wing & Soar productions, under the leadership of Debra Ann Byrd, presented the final presentation of their Harlem Shakespeare Festival’s third season at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building on West 125th Street, June 30, a contemporary concert version of “Much Ado About Nothing,” complete with music and dance.

The new abridged 90 minute staged reading presentation was set in Post-Civil War Louisiana around the period of what was called “The In-Gathering” when freed slaves went searching for their family members sold in slavery. It is a time when

men coming home from battle were something to celebrate. The concert production featured period music and dance. The script was abridged and directed by Dathan B. Williams, Artistic Associate Director of Take Wing & Soar.

The multi-ethnic, multi-racial cast included Alexa Ciera Adderley, Cameron Bartell*, David L. Carson*, John HeathClark*, Ann Flanigan,

James Foster Jr.*, Warren Jackson*, Tauriq Jenkins*, Tom Martin, Adaku Opki, Kamela Payne, Damion Rochester*, Claire Simba, Parker Scott*, Norman Anthony Small*, Kaili Y. Turner, Renauld White*, Natasha Yannacañedo* and Paul Binotto as the Sexton and the Musician.

The audience was seated in a 3/4 round and the cast moved freely around the intimate performance space at times speaking

directly to the audience.

A talk-back/ response was held by director Dathan B.

Williams.

Seniors celebrate the arts at the Polo Grounds

T

he SU-CASA Artist-in-Residence Program hosted “Pop-Up Book Exhibition & Celebration” at The Polo Grounds Senior Center on Thursday, June 30, 2016. The afternoon culminating event was sponsored by SU-CASA, a collaboration between the New York City Council, the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department for the Aging and the City’s five local arts councils. The program is funded publicly by the New York City Council in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Department for the Aging.

The event began with networking and music by world-renown percussionist and former drummer for The Grateful Dead Annette Aguilar along with her The Stringbean Trio. After, Paul Ferrara spoke to the audience about SU-CASA and the work the program has inspired.

Harlem News spoke exclusively with Ferrara after the event and about the origins of his involvement. “In 2013, and again in 2015, I was awarded a grant which was called SPARC (Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide) and it was of the same premise - placing teaching artists in senior

centers. At that time it was funded through the Department for the Aging and the Cultural Councils. In 2016 the City Council became involved and increased the funding and changed the name to SU-CASA. There is also another city funded program called CASA - Cultural After School Adventure Program funded by the City Council. No one has been able to answer what the SU stands for.”

Ferrara also discussed some of the opinions of the seniors. “The seniors have expressed their interest in having the classes continue and I am hoping that we don’t have to wait for the next grant season for the classes

to start up again, which wouldn’t be until January of next year. The Polo Grounds does not have money available in their budget so I am hoping that a community sponsor will come forward to help to fund the classes.”

Ferrara also expressed a sense of pride with the end results of his senior students. “I am very proud of the books that the participants created.

They put their heart and soul into the project and I think that when you see the books you’re able to understand that.”

Ferrara then introduced two of the senior students, the first of which was Hannah Scarborough. Scarborough’s

pop-up book centered on her trip to Mexico City, Mexico, and it was immaculately designed.

Christine M. Heyward, a retired Administration for Child Services employee who has called the Polo Grounds for half a century, designed four pop-up books, one of which focused on wedding cakes.

The Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Tom Finkelpearl addressed the audience.

“I spoke to three or four of the folks that have done the books back there and every single one of them said ‘when can that artist come back and do another program in

the community center?’

When I get that kind of complaint, ‘We’re really mad this is ending,’ that’s the kind of complaint I love to hear. Because this is a program that the city had invested some money in, it’s program that’s growing. It’s going to be in more senior centers.”

The event continued with lunch and music, continuing with stories by the organization Elders Share the Arts and Pearls of Wisdom Storytellers. With the excitement that the seniors showed for their work, I for one hope that Polo Grounds Senior Center gets the funding that they deserve so the classes can continue.

The whole world has gasped at the political climate of the nation as well as the surging violence in the nation and the world. With a wink and a nod to Banksy, Rockwell, Keith Haring, Pablo and the film “Belarusian Waltz” - get busy.

The visual image is one that the human brain does not dis-

card easily, especially if it gets the message across loud and clear.

The subject choice is up to the artist but what matters most is that artists, in such a time as this, fulfill the legacy so elegantly described by President John F. Kennedy in his eulogy for Robert Frost.

“Strength takes many forms, and the most obvious forms are not always the most significant.

The men who create power make an indispensable contribution to the Nation’s greatness, but the men who question power make a contribution just as indispensable, especially when that questioning is disinterested, for they determine whether we use power or power uses us…

The artist, however faithful to his personal vision of reality, becomes the

last champion of the individual mind and sensibility against an intrusive society and an officious state… In pursuing his perceptions of

reality, he must often sail against the currents of his time.

include artificial dyes, especially red dye; foods with trans fats, such as cookies, cakes and pie crusts; and low-fiber foods, which include many fast-food choices.

Fortunately, there are also great food options that can heal the brain and even help reverse brain damage, Amen says.

Those include: • Healthy fats. Surprisingly, fat is not the enemy.

That’s because there are “good fats” and “bad fats.”

Some examples of good fats are olives, sunflower seeds and flaxseed. Amen also points out that 60 percent of the solid weight of the brain is fat. “So if someone calls you a fathead, you should thank them,” he says.

• Fish. Salmon, halibut, sardines, mackerel and other fish are loaded with healthy oils and healthy fat. “People who eat grilled or baked fish once a week have more grey matter in their brain,” Amen says.

“You may not want grey in your hair, but grey in your brain is awesome.”

• Avocados. This nutrient-dense fruit is loaded with healthy Omega 3 fatty acids, which build braincell membranes, reduce brain inflammation and promote new brain-cell formation.

• Raw nuts. Go easy on the amount because they pack a lot of calories, but raw nuts are very healthy for the brain.

• Chocolate. Here’s an-

other surprise. Chocolate also has been shown to decrease cravings and increase blood flow to the brain. It’s what usually is added to chocolate – sugar and dairy products – that makes it bad.

• Colorful vegetables.

“Anytime you prepare to eat something, don’t just think about the pounds you might put on,” Amen says.

The right diet also can do wonders, improving the brain’s function and even helping to reverse brain damage. Meanwhile, the opposite also is true. Poor diet choices not only hurt the waistline, but have a negative effect on the brain.

“When it comes to the brain, sugar is public enemy No. 1,” says Daniel Amen, M.D., a clinical neuroscientist and brain imaging expert who also is the Founder of Amen Clinics (www.amenclinics. com), which treat patients at six locations around the country.

Satisfying Smoothie Bowls Smoothie bowls are sweet and satisfying -- and meant to be eaten with a spoon. Thicker than a typical smoothie, these delicious bowls are a mix of fresh and frozen produce, blended with your choice of superfoods and toppings. Include leafy greens such as kale or spinach and seeds like chia

or hemp for a power-packed breakfast. Add avocado for a silky texture, then top with

Pumped-Up Pancakes Use a high-powered blend-

Use the natural sweetness of fruit as a camouflage for vegetables. Pineapples, oranges and grapes are particularly good ingredients to marry with vegetables. Apples can offset greens with a slight bite.

Experiment to figure out your favorite combinations, increasing the amount of greens as your family becomes more accustomed to them.

To get started, try this recipe for a Basic Green Smoothie: Ingredients: • 1/2 banana, peeled • 1 1/2 cups green grapes • 1 medium orange, about 5 1/2 ounces, whole, peeled but

How to Teach Children to Give Back to the Community

W

hen school is in session, it may seem like the greatest lessons to be learned revolve around reading, writing and arithmetic. But teaching children the importance of getting involved in their community and lending a hand to neighbors should not be overlooked.

Here are a few ideas on how individuals of all ages can make a positive impact.

• Donate to a local shelter. Provide aid to children and families in need by donating school supplies, toys, as well as gently used shoes and clothing to local shelters. Children can collect things they no longer use at home, and then help deliver items to a local or-

ganization. They can also mobilize neighbors and friends to make donations by hosting a drive.

• Participate in a local fundraiser in your community. Learn about upcoming special events that support your favorite charities. Children can help at all levels, from assisting at registration tables, cheering

on individuals running in a 5K or passing out literature.

They can also organize their own fundraiser. A bake sale or car wash are some fun ideas that children can participate in -- from start to finish.

• Research organizations that support charities important to your child and lend a hand together. Get involved by volunteering, spreading the word or donating to the cause. Local chapters can provide numerous ways children can participate.

• Support companies committed to philanthropic efforts. Many companies identify non-profit organizations that support like-minded causes and offer customers opportunities

to give back throughout the year.

For example, there is a national company dedicated to strengthening the communities it serves through a longstanding -- and ongoing -- partnership with the non-profit organization Shoes That Fit. Rack Room Shoes supports Shoes That Fit’s mission to help more students attend school in comfort, and with confidence and dignity by providing children in need with a new pair of shoes.

If you’re a parent, you know children’s feet grow fast! However, the importance of having shoes that fit properly is sometimes taken for granted. Your children may not realize that some of their schoolmates

may have to wear ill-fitting shoes that make it hard for them to participate in sports or concentrate in class. The good news is there is something you can do to help.

Rack Room Shoes hosts bi-annual Shoes That Fit fund-raising campaigns that offer customers the opportunity to donate at the register. Donations are used to provide new shoes to students in need in local school systems.

“Whether it’s with our customers, associates or partners, it’s important to show children we are all working together to make a positive impact in the areas where we live and work,” said Mark Lardie, Rack Room Shoes president and CEO.

Since the partnership was established, Rack Room Shoes has donated more than 150,000 pairs of new shoes to children nationwide. School liaisons report that students who have participated in the program have better academic performance, improved attendance, improved behavior and an increased participation in physical activities. n recent years, policymakers have focused on how to improve student performance, scrutinizing factors like school day start times and the nutritional value of school-provided meals. However, the basic design and configuration of schools and classrooms can also have a major impact on student success, and this fact is now getting its due attention.

The classroom environment can impact a child’s academic progress by as much as 25 percent in one year, according to a UK study at the University of Salford. Armed with a growing body of evidence of the link between school design and student performance, architects are altering their ideas accordingly.

“As a profession, we have been working closely with neuroscientists, educators, parents and even school children to make more informed design choices for 21st century learning environments,” says John Dale, chair of the American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education, and studio leader at Harley Ellis Devereaux, an architecture and engineering firm. “Through these interactions, architectural approaches have evolved so that classrooms in much greater numbers are becoming flexible laboratories that can accommodate a variety of learning opportunities.”

Findings show that kids learn in different ways, whether it’s by sitting, standing or collaborating in

groups; and experts say the school at-large and the classroom in particular need to be responsive to these varying arrangements. Dale outlines the most important design elements that can improve academic performance: • Lighting (natural and artificial) that mimics the

natural circadian rhythms of a day as best it can.

• Views that provide an ability to see nature and appreciate space and surroundings that stimulate students’ imagination, while actually allowing greater focus on the subject at hand.

• Acoustics that mini-

mize background noise and reverberations, and foster an environment that allows for better concentration and attention to the teacher.

• Ventilation that promotes the best possible indoor air quality to avoid the spread of illness and maintain student focus.

• Room layout, furnishings and décor that that hits the sweet spot between stimulating versus overwhelming clutter.

At its best, school layout and design can also extend the classroom outdoors and provide students more opportunities to engage. There are ways to promote greater physical movement, such as strategic placement of “irresistible staircases” (staircases that are so beautifully designed they are difficult

to resist,) and by structuring the building so that natural flow of walking is the norm.

Schools that have been designed to be sustainable can also offer teachable moments about ecology and energy-efficiency by spotlighting elements such as water conservation measures and solar panel placement.

As schools move far away from institutional closed classrooms populated by rows of students tethered to desks, architects are spearheading the movement towards spaces that help students maximize their full academic potential. In many instances nationwide, new school designs are becoming a focal point of a community and serving as a beacon of civic pride along the way.

Adolescence Is Not A Disease – Helping Teens Succeed In A Complex World

W

hen did all teenagers become anxious, depressed and lose their ability to cope?

The truth is, in most cases, they didn’t.

“There is a tendency in our culture to treat young people who are struggling as if there is something wrong with them,” says Jeffrey Leiken (www. leiken.com), Adolescence Expert, CEO of Evolution Mentoring International and co-founder of HeroPath International. “We send them to doctors, therapists and specialists who all try to figure out and ‘treat’ what is bro-

ken.”

Leiken tackles the problems that teenagers – and their parents – face in his new book, Adolescence Is Not A Disease: Beyond Drinking, Drugs & Dangerous Friends – The Journey to Adulthood.

“My methodology begins with the presumption that there is nothing wrong with the teen, but there is a lot wrong with the current system” he says. “Instead, I focus on figuring out what they need that will help them thrive.”

Leiken, a San Francisco-based mentor and con-

sultant, uses relationship, advice, perspective guidance and learning about life to help teens and parents get through this challenging period.

“This is in stark contrast to the medical/clinical/assessment paradigm that dominates the youth development field and heavily influences parents in their thinking and decision making – a system that is largely based on fear and pathology (illness),” he says.

“Each child is different. Each faces his or her own challenges. Rather than get overwhelmed by a dozen different ‘how-to-

parent’ theories, parents only need to become the expert in what works in raising their own teens.”

That means parents need to understand how to communicate and relate effectively with their children, and how to bring the right experiences, opportunities and learning that will best help their child to grow, Leiken says.

This is based on who they are, and what their interests, strengths, talents, ambitions and challenges may be.

For example, Leiken says that eliminating choices that are not right for a teen is much more

effective than allowing them to keep all options open. “This will significantly increase the quality of their decision making,” he says.

Instead of helping adolescents to get into the best colleges, Leiken recommends that parents help them find the program that works best for them, even if that means not going to college at all.

“Parents need to help them identify their strengths and interests,” he says, “and to build a life that flows from these.”

Fear and Doubt III

T

here is an ancient wisdom that tells us that learning takes place with repetition; it is for that reason I often write about the danger associated with Fear and Doubt. Fear and doubt have been major tools used by a few to manipulate and control the mental, spiritual and creative development of the masses for centuries in every developed society in the world. The true concepts of faith and compassion have not been practiced by the majority of modern day society.

We all were born with

the gift to change our reality using thought manifestation. There are many theories that try to explain why this gift was kept secret from the masses for so long. Most agree that control was a major factor. Ancient Egyptian and Mayan calendars predicted that 2012 would be the visual beginning of the next cycle of human development; the beginning of the end, to the illusory concepts of limitation. Fear and doubt will slowly be replaced with faith and compassion.

Compassion for others and faith in one’s ability to change reality using positive thought manifestation will

become necessary survival tools in this new cycle of universal energy. With all that is happening in the our local, national and international communities many of my left brain thinking readers will not embrace my belief that those who rule by fear and doubt will in time self-destruct; to be replaced by a universal energy of faith and compassion. Health and wealth will be two major reasons that will influence this change in many.

The concept of improving one’s health and wealth by having faith in one’s ability to manifest a positive reality with focused thought; a reality that also is focused

on improving the quality of life for others(compassion) will never be accepted by some. Nature has always been selective. Those who learn to adapt will move on to the next level of human evaluation. Fear and doubt will keep you from becoming all that you can be.

The social-programed matrix of fear and doubt has been injected into your psychic from early childhood. There are many reasons why the major news networks concentrate on news that create fear and doubt; control is one of them. Unless you can find ways to step outside of the matrix you will in time

self-destruct. Many have no idea that they are living in a matrix, a major reason why stress is the foundation of most illnesses.

Fear and doubt keeps us from learning how to step outside the matrix, to deprogram ourselves and discover who we really are.

We have this gift of thought manifestation. We use it, but all too often in nonproductive ways. What you think about often will come to you. If you always focus thinking on perceived limitations and the lack of power to determine your future, that will be the reality that you manifest for yourself.

ummer time and the living is easy . . . fish are jumping . . . and, well you know the rest. It’s the “living is easy” part that I want to talk about. My hat is off to the legions of women who despite working a full 40 hour week, can still manage to pull off entertaining friends and family every weekend!

Sure there are women who cater, but there are those for whom that possibility is non-existent! They are

the ones who shop for the food, order flowers, clean the house, do the wash, clean the grill, wipe down the outdoor furniture . . . all that after “serving up” an impressive level of efficiency the rest of the week!

And they entertain with a smile and graciousness that makes your weekend really special. But it makes me wonder though, even if they tell you that they really enjoy entertaining . . . whether they ever take time for themselves.

Summer is supposed to be fun, and that means that a hostess should have some (fun) too! I’m sure that she finds time to be entertained elsewhere, but if her weekends are spent cleaning up and preparing for the next round of guests . . . where

does that leave her? You say you hadn’t thought about it? Well, shame on you! Below are some tips to help your hostess enjoy some easy summertime living too.

Be a good guest: Her home is not a hotel and she is not the maid; pickup after yourself and pitch-in when it comes to cleaning up after meals.

Offer to help prepare the meals and bring along essential items to help restock the pantry.

Respect: Observe the rules of the house. If you are a guest, don’t assume that you have the right to bring a guest! You can’t.

Don’t wear out your welcome.

Offer: Take your hostess to dinner at a wonder-

ful restaurant during your stay.

Follow-up: thank you, thank you, thank you!

Send note and a token of appreciation for all of the efforts that went into making your stay enjoyable.

Reciprocate: Extend an invitation to your hostess to be your guest.

Yes, there are some folks that make entertaining look easy, but I can assure you that it takes a great deal of planning and hard work to pull it all off. As a guest you should always remember your role and responsibility to your hostess.

Being a guest in someone’s home is a privilege offered only to those who can be entrusted with the

keys to their castle! It is up to you to give your hostess an opportunity to enjoy her wonderful weekend as well by being an engaging and entertaining guest that makes her proud. Think about it.

he tragedy of the past few weeks should be a sign that there WILL BE a shift in the world. The spiritual shift has to come to show the power of God. The senseless killing of two more black men at the hands of police officers makes the question, “Do Black Lives Matter?” a reality. The increased gap in police-community relations across the country leaves so many unanswered questions.

Our concern is about the children. Our children will suffer from these events. The television, iPhone, tablet and

our computers keep these images in our sight and in our mind. Many parents warn their children to be “non-confrontational” when dealing with the police. Our advice has consistently been to keep quiet. Ask for your parents, preacher, and family friends – somebody to come to your assistance.

Go through the process.

We can fight the battle another day. It’s a lot easier to fight your battle with you here!

We acknowledge that all police are not bad. It seems that there are too many that are. These “bad actors” have an apparent

built-in hostility against black and Latino men.

The shooting of police in Dallas is unbelievable and horrible. This act does not demonstrate the feelings of most residents of the community.

Unfortunately, this Dallas tragedy was destined to happen. The constant showing of black men being killed by police motivated this deranged former army veteran to go off. Different people react differently to the stimuli portrayed across the media. This black man handled it his way.

The celebration of the life of First Lady Zena

Lett was a fitting tribute to a great servant of God and the community. Rev. Ronnie Faison, Pastor of Traveler’s Rest Baptist Church, delivered the Eulogy.

Faith Memorial Baptist Church was the location for the home going service for Mother Bertha Griffin. The well-attended service paid tribute to a wonderful woman who exemplified what a Pastor’s wife should be about.

Even as her health failed she maintained her presence and obligation to the church.

“The Gilded Years”

lways be true to yourself.

It sounds like a poster, a meme, or advice that’s always been in the background of your life.

Putting on airs, pretending to be someone you’re not, keeping up the ruse, it’s harder than it looks – and besides, genuineness is a trait people like. Always be true to yourself – unless, as in the new book “The Gilded Years” by Karin Tanabe, temporarily living a lie could change your future.

For three years, Anita Hemmings had worked for this moment.

It was the fall of 1896,

the first day of her last year at Vassar. She’d finally get to partake of the bittersweet rites that senior students enjoyed, and she anticipated a post-graduate future as a scholar of Greek studies, maybe even a professor.

She studied hard and made what she hoped would be lifelong friends – but she was always careful.

She had to be.

Anita was African American. Vassar had an official ban on black students.

She’d been dreaming about attending Vassar since she was a little girl, but she’d been warned about their admissions policy. Even so, someone at

her church told her to try anyhow; two of Anita’s ancestors were white, and her skin was “high yellow.” She could easily pass – but for four years?

Education was important to her family and, though it had taken a lot of diligence and care, Anita knew that graduation would be worth every night out denied, every study-session alone, each dance missed. It was all about to pay off.

And then she was assigned to be Lottie Taylor’s roommate.

Everybody on the East Coast knew the Taylor family, Lottie in particular.

She was rich and beautiful,

well-traveled and fun-loving. Lottie was never without her large wardrobe, her mischievous streak, or a beau, and she embraced Anita without question.

She pulled Anita out of solitude, took her on trips, and introduced her to a life of wealth and comfort. And then Anita got a little too careless…

Alrighty then. I guess the next thing to do is to figure out who’ll play whom in the movie version of “The Gilded Years.” Yes, this is the stuff that Hollywood (and readers!) love because there really was an Anita Hemmings and she really did matriculate at Vassar by “passing”; in fact, she became that college’s first

African American graduate.

In her afterword, author Karin Tanabe says she came across this story some years ago and decided that it needed telling. In doing so, she also pulls readers into the late Victorian age: a time of swooning femininity, burgeoning women’s consciousness, and racism that sizzled in places unexpected. As for the real Anita Hemmings, while Tanabe admits to taking slight literary license with her tale itself, readers can expect a wonderful, tightly-told semi-biographical period piece with an explosive pinnacle.

When you pack your bags for vacation, work, or just a day away, toss this

book on the top. You’ll want to dive into it as much as possible, because “The Gilded Years” is truly a worthy read.

Little or No Retirement Savings? Here Are 5 Tips That Can Help

ost Americans know they need to save more for retirement. But most Americans aren’t doing it.

Just how bad off are some of them? A study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that about half of households 55 and older had no retirement savings at all.

Clearly, many Americans could be headed for retirement disaster. Fortunately, though, there are steps they can still take to improve their situation.

“While it’s never too early to start saving for retirement, it’s also never too late,” says Chuck Price, pres-

ident of Price Financial Group Wealth Management Inc. (www.pfgwm.com) and author of “Investing Simplified: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You.” “Even if you’re in your 40s or 50s and you have no money saved at all, you shouldn’t just throw up your hands and give up. You can still begin building a portfolio that can put you in a better position for when you retire, even if it’s not as good as it would have been if you had started at 25.”

The first step, Price says, is to calculate how much money you’ll need to live on. A ballpark figure should suffice. If

you’re not sure how to even begin, there are online retirement calculators that can help.

Once you’ve done that, Price says you should: • Pool your resources. Figure out how much money you have for investing and saving, and also how much you’ll receive in Social Security. If you have a pension, include that, too. The goal is to get an idea of where you are financially in relation to how much money you’ll need.

• Set goals. After you have good grasp of your money situation, set savings goals for yourself. You’ll want

to make regular contributions to savings.

• Set up a 401(k) and/or a Roth IRA. If your company offers a 401(k) and you haven’t taken advantage of it, now is the time, Price says. Many companies match your contributions up to 50 percent.

If you make below certain income thresholds, you may also be able to contribute to a Roth IRA. Roth IRA contributions aren’t tax deductible, but you can withdraw the money tax free when you retire.

• Avoid being too conservative. If you’ve waited this long to begin saving, then you can’t afford to be con

servative. You have a lot of years to make up. “Don’t be reckless,” Price says, “but a little aggressiveness could do you a lot of good if you only have a decade or two left to build a sizeable retirement account.” Investing in stock and mutual funds, after some extensive research, could make a difference.

• Eliminate debt.

Granted, this is easier said than done, Price says. Getting out of debt, especially heavy debt, can take years and can severely impact your ability to save.

52 CAN DO’S: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions for each week of the year My series of articles on muscle and bone strength hit home for me when I thought of my own Mom, a seasoned woman of a certain age, who begun about a year ago to move differently than I was accustomed to witnessing all my life for her 5 foot 3 inch petite, yet sturdy frame. “I hadn’t realized I was favoring my left leg when standing up so the pressure felt uneven” my mother described.

Bone density loss speeds up for men and women beginning from mid-late thirties and increases particularly in postmenopausal women (when estrogen levels drop significantly) by up to 20% or more according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (www.NOF.org). The good news is, with the right exercise and nutrition habits, your bones (and muscles) are capable of being strengthened at practically any age!

I suggested to my Mom a number of strength exercises to do at home and at her local fitness center – one of which I’ve included below, and over the past few weeks, my mother reports that she “feels steadier, lighter and balanced” and that overall

“my posture and the way I move has improved greatly.”

“LiFE” (Life, Flex, Extend) Workout Benefit: This strength and weight-bearing exercise is also excellent for coordination and balance.

Setup: Stand up straight, holding a bottle weight or dumbbell in each hand, arms by your sides, both feet slightly separated and facing forward.

Step 1: Shift your right foot forward ahead of your left foot, in a staggered stance.

Step 2: Lift your arms from your sides to raise them forward at shoulder level. As you do this, simultaneously raise your right leg. Bring both arms and leg slowly back to Step 1 position. Repeat 8 – 10 times.

Step 3: Flex or bend your

arms at a 90-degree angle, so that the weights are facing the ceiling, Again, raise your right leg simultaneously as you flex, then slowly lower both back to Step 1. Repeat 8-10 times.

Step 4: Extend your arms straight behind you as you lift, aiming for your arms to be almost parallel to the floor. Keep your triceps (back

of your arms) tight and contracted. With each extension, raise and lower your leg back to Step 1. Repeat 8-10 times.

Perform the entire fourstep sequence on the left leg.

How To Become More Generous In A Me-First World

“Greed lurks in all of us. The question is: What are we going to do about it?”

The good news, Cortines and Baumer say, is that while greed is a widespread human characteristic, so is generosity. Reflecting on their lifelong journey, they took a hard look at biblical passages while at Harvard and became convinced that their own hearts were full of greed and needed to change.

“Take your pick of a worldview and it encourages sharing with others,” Baumer says. “Eastern faiths, Abrahamic faiths, atheism – it doesn’t seem to matter when it comes to this topic. Virtu-

ally all of humanity values generosity.”

But valuing generosity is one thing. Making it a significant part of your lifestyle is something else. Cortines and Baumer say mindsets about money can be broken down into three groups: spenders, who pursue the greatest amount of consumption right now without much thought of tomorrow; savers, who limit their consumption to accumulate wealth; and servants, who limit both consumption and wealth building so they can give the most money possible to help others.

“That last group, unfortunately, is the rarest,” Cortines says.

There are steps people

can take to become more generous, Cortines and Baumer say. Those include: • Make giving a priority. In any endeavor, how well you do depends on how much of a priority you make the goal. It’s tough to be generous if the amount you give is based on what’s left over after you’ve satisfied your own wants. Cortines and Baumer give right off the top, before setting the rest of their monthly budgets. (They give away 12-18 percent of their gross incomes, currently.)

• Talk about your finances.

In our culture we talk about almost everything, but are strangely silent about personal finances. Sharing your financial life with a trust-

ed friend can help you gain perspective, Cortines and Baumer claim. They each fully divulge their finances to close friends, soliciting advice and encouragement.

• Set “financial finish lines.”

While it’s important to take care of yourself and your family, Cortines and Baumer say it helps to come up with a cutoff point where there is no further need for more spending or more wealth accumulation. Both authors have publicly committed to live a middle class life, regardless of their earnings. Getting more money should increase our standard of giving, not our standard of living, they say.

“You can always find

ways to justify more spending and more accumulation of wealth,” Baumer says.
