Small Business Owners Say Continual Tech Investments Are Critical (Statepoint)

A

new survey of small business executives reveals key insights of what it takes to stay competitive today -- and technology and attracting top talent are crucial.

The survey, conducted

by The Harris Poll and sponsored by CIT Group Inc. (NYSE:CIT), explores the intersection of technology and talent to identify small business executives’ top priorities for investment and growth.

Among those surveyed, 37% plan to invest even more in their businesses during the next 12 months compared to the past 12 months, and of those planning to invest, cloud computing systems, customer relationship management tools and cyber security/data privacy are key priorities.

“Understanding these key insights and trends can help small businesses maintain a competitive edge and also drive growth,” says Ken Martin managing director of CIT’s Small Business Solutions unit, which offers lending options that give small

businesses the financial agility needed to adopt advanced technology-enabled solutions.

The survey also revealed that earlier technology investments have already paid off for small businesses, with more than 40% crediting tech spending as a top driver of growth over the past 12 months. Additionally, 84% of survey respondents agreed that continuous technological investment is a business need. 79% agree that it’s critical in helping to attract and retain customers.

At the same time, small business leaders recognize that their workforce will play a major role in implementing technology investments and addressing the risks that may come with them. While 82% of survey respondents say their current workforce is tech-savvy enough to keep up with the pace of digital transformation, 69% also say they focus on hiring tech-savvy employees.

“Technology is only as effective as the employees that implement it and the customers that benefit from it,” says Denise Menelly, CIT executive vice president and head

of Technology and Operations, “Our own successful integration of technology and talent has been instrumental in empowering both our clients and employees.”

Cybersecurity and data privacy are top of mind for small business executives, as 56% say that the risk of security or data breaches are among the top concerns when it comes to technological changes. Other concerns include not knowing how new technology will work with current tools or systems and not having enough capital to invest in the latest technology.

Less than a third of small business executives are currently outsourcing financial aspects of their business, such as payroll, credit protection, talent acquisition and accounts receivables management. However, as companies add more employees, it’s more likely that they’ll consider outsourcing these various services.

As small businesses beef up their investments, they are focusing on technology and talent, which experts say is a formula for success in a competitive market.

Thinking About Refinancing? 5 Things to Consider (Statepoint)

ortgage rates have recently hit near-record lows and Freddie Mac predicts rates will remain low for the foreseeable future.

If you haven’t already taken advantage of the lowrate environment to refinance your home, experts say it’s worth considering.

“There are lots of reasons to refinance your home mortgage when rates go down,” says Liz Bryant, national sales manager for Wells Fargo Home Lending. “Lower rates can reduce your payment, shorten the overall length of your loan or provide you access to cash that you can use for home improvements or other expenses.”

Here are a few things to consider if you’re thinking

os Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna Maria Onore, were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday, January 26, 2020. Bryant was 41, and his daughter, affectionately known as GiGi, who was only 13.

“As the reports came in on the death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter and the other passengers on board his helicopter we all were shocked and saddened by the news of a life gone far too soon,” stated Danny J. Bakewell, Sr., the chairman and executive publisher of NNPA member newspaper, the Los Angeles Sentinel. “Whether you were a Laker fan or not, the news seemed surreal.”

Bakewell continued: “This tragic death of a young man dying in the prime of his life is a reminder to us all of just how precious life really is and how we must all embrace life, love and family and never forget what is really important. Kobe was a warrior on the basketball court, and he seemed to ease his way into retirement life with the same passion and enthusiasm that we all admired when he was playing in the NBA. My thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, his wife, his children and all those who admired Kobe Bryant not only as a basketball star but as a Man, a Son,

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the NNPA, said the Black Press joins with the rest of America in mourning Bryant’s death.

“The National Newspaper Publishers Association expresses our profound sympathy and sincerest condolences to the family of Kobe Bryant,” Chavis stated.

Denise Rolark Barnes, the publisher of the Washington Informer also offered her condolences to the Bryant family.

“Our hearts cry out for Kobe Bryant and his family,” Rolark Barnes stated. “Our memories of his phenomenal life and career will never die.”

TMZ reported that the 5-time NBA Champion was en route to his Mamba Academy for a basketball practice when the crash occurred. The academy is north of Los Angeles in the city of Thousand Oaks.

In a statement, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Bryant was a giant who inspired, amazed and thrilled people everywhere. “He will live forever in the heart of Los Angeles and will be remembered through the ages as one of our greatest heroes,” Garcetti stated.

“This is a moment that leaves us struggling to find words that express the magnitude of shock and sorrow we

are all feeling right now, and I am keeping Kobe’s entire family in my prayers at this time of unimaginable grief.”

The helicopter, an S-76 owned by Bryant, crashed and caught fire at about 10 a.m. Pacific time, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Rescue crews were on location within moments, but officials said it was too late to save anyone aboard.

“He’s way too young,” Laker legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson stated. “I was supposed to pass away before him. He’s gone way too soon.

It’s a devastating loss for all of us.” Another Lakers legend, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, who played against Bryant’s father, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, said he was stunned. “Most people will remember Kobe as the magnificent athlete who inspired a whole generation of basketball players,” Jabbar tweeted. “But I will always remember him as a man who was much more than an athlete.”

Shaquille O’Neal, who won three NBA titles with Bryant and the Lakers from 2000 to 2002, tweeted that his late and former teammate was much more than an athlete. “He was a family man. That was what we had most in common,” O’Neal wrote. “I would hug his children like they were my own

Current Lakers star LeBron James was seen leaving the team’s airplane in tears.

He didn’t address reporters.

A spokesperson for the Lakers said the team plans to address the heartbreaking matter “soon.”

Ken Miller, the publisher of the Inglewood, California-based NNPA member newspaper, Inglewood Today, said he was also in shock and devastated by the news. Miller covered Bryant for years for the Los Angeles Sentinel and said the superstar had previously given him his personal cell phone number.

“When Jerry West drafted Kobe at the age of 17, no one knew exactly what the franchise was getting,” Miller stated. “He evolved to [become], I

would say, the greatest Laker of them all, and I had the opportunity to cover and meet him personally and at one time just out of the blue as a reporter. I was so starstruck by him by his air, by his intelligence, and he had a reclusiveness to him as well, that I just walked up to him and asked him for his personal cell phone. He gave it to me, and it was at a time when Shaquille O’Neill was gone, and the Lakers had just won three championships. He ultimately wanted to connect with the African American community.”

Born in Philadelphia in 1978, Bryant was initially drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the 13th overall pick of the 1996 NBA draft, but forced a post-draft trade to the Lakers, stating it was the only team he’d join. Bryant spent his entire career with the Lakers, winning five NBA championships and the 2008 MVP Award. He topped Michael Jordan for third place on the NBA all-time scoring list in December 2014 and retired in 2016 after scoring 60 points in his final game. His uniform numbers 8 and 24 were both retired by the franchise, making him the only NBA star to have two numbers retired with the same team. In 2018, Bryant earned an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for Dear Basketball.

Even as a lifelong New York Knicks fan, a team that saw Bryant crush their hopes on many a night, the death of the man known as “The Black Mamba” is as stunning as any this reporter has seen. In 1979, in a similarly shocking tragedy, during a season in which they were trying to defend their World Series title, the New York Yankees lost their beloved captain, Thurman Munson, in a plane crash. While Munson was only one of the cogs in a Yankee team that had captured back-to-back titles in 1977 and 1978, Bryant was the unquestioned leader of the Lakers, one of the most storied franchises in sports, who turned out such superstars as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, James Worthy, and Shaquille O’Neal.

FILM REVIEW: Bad Boys for Life T

hey first teamed up for Bad Boys in 1995, to great box office success. There was an encore in 2003, Bad Boys II, which was distinguished by incredible stunts. Now, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence go back to the same well one more time. Is there any water left?

A sporty looking, deep blue 992-Generation Porsche speeds through the streets of sunny Miami. If a reckless twentysomething was behind the wheel, you’d call the car a chick magnet. Instead it’s 51-year-old Detective Mike Lowrey (Smith) steering the vehicle with his lead foot on the acceler-

ator. In his hands the sports car is more a middle-ager’s last grasp at youth. Lowrey’s 54-year-old partner Detective Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) sits petrified in the passenger seat, holding on for dear life and nauseated by the hyper-dangerous ride.

According to the blueprint drawn by screenwriters Chris Bremner, Peter Craig (The Town) and Joe Carnahan (Narc, TV’s The Blacklist), this is how the film will play out: A plot involving revenge from a former Mexican assailant Isabel Aretas (Kate del Castillo, All About Nina) and her minion (Jacob Scipio, Hunter Killer) evolves. Assassinations of

lawyers and judges rain down on Miami like a summer storm.

A new police unit named AMMO takes charge of the investigation, headed by a tough captain named Rita (Paola Nuñez, TV’s The Purge) and her

elite group: tech wizard Dorn (Alexander Ludwig, The Hunger Games), weapons expert Kelly (Vanessa Hudgens, Spring Breakers) and the very sarcastic Rafe (Charles Melton, TV’s Riverdale).

Subtly and brazenly, in humor and family drama, the script rips into the ages of the two protagonists like someone pouring salt on an open wound.

According to the CDC, Black women are more likely to get Triple-Negative Breast Cancer. This type of cancer

is extremely aggressive, harder to detect. For that reason, it is extremely important to get screenings frequently and as early as possible.

What sets Zwanger, Harlem location apart from any other radiology facility is that all of the equipment is brand

new. State of the art imaging technology is also very safe, so there is little threat when it comes to screenings or the number of screenings that a patient can have.

Zwanger is new to Harlem as of 2019, howeve they have 33 locations and been provid-

ing radiology services in New York for more than 60 years.

Zwanger’s mammography equipment provides detailed imaging and provides them with details on each breast screened. They also have 3D imagiing for breast cancer.

“In the past, I spoke to patients who were only allowed to have two MRIs in a year, because it is such high radiation.

With all of our equipment being the latest and greatest, low radiation, to no radiation. There’s no limit on how many times you can be scanned in a

year at our facility” explained Zwanger PR Director, Chante Jordan.

Many women, find breast screenings uncomfortable. Jordan dis-

cussed why the slight discomfort is necessary saying “We want to capture every angle and everything inside of your breast. Our tech moves

very slowly. She also has a dialogue with the patient to make sure they are not in excruciating pain. However, it is very quick.”

Zwanger offers two types of mammograms -- screenings, and diagnostics. Screenings are mandated by the state of New York and by an individual’s insurance. These visits do not require a referral from a physician. A diagnostic exam is provided after you’ve been diagnosed.

Pat Stevenson, Publisher of the Harlem Community News said, “I am thrilled to have an imaging facility conveniently located right here in Harlem where I live. I am a 3 -year triple negative breast cancer survivor and have to take a mammogram every 6 months. Zwanger has the latest equipment and I will be coming here.”

Over the years, Black women typically had screenings for breast

cancer in their 40s. However, due to recent studies and statistics, many health care professionals recommend breast examinations at 35 years of age.

In addition to mammography machines, Zwanger has MRI machines, cat scan, X-ray, ultrasound, and Dexa for bone density testing.

“We’re family-owned and operated. We moved into a neighborhood

where there are currently no services available for those within blocks of our facility. We’re here for the community” explained Jordan.

Credit Application Denied? Here’s What to Do Next (Statepoint)

t’s no fun being denied anything, especially credit. Usually when someone is trying to get a line of credit, it’s for a big reason or major life milestone and having a credit application denied can feel like a real setback. But this rejection isn’t something to take personally. It’s more common than people realize and doesn’t spell doom for your financial future. In fact, credit denials can be a good opportunity to take proactive steps to improve your credit health long-term.

How will I know I’ve been denied credit? If a lender denies your credit application, they will send you a letter called an “adverse action notice.” Don’t worry -- it sounds more menacing than it really is. This letter

will explain why the lender denied your application and give you information about the credit reporting agency where they got your information. With the notice, you are entitled to get a free credit report from that agency within 60 days. While the credit re-

porting agency provides your information, the lender ultimately makes the decision on whether to grant credit or not.

If you need more information specifically about your denial, it’s usually best to contact the lender directly.

Why was I denied cred-

it? There are many reasons a credit application could be denied and the reasons vary by lender, the types of credit requested and your personal credit history. The adverse action letter will list the reason or reasons why you were denied. Common causes in-

clude having a limited credit history, too many recent inquiries and a high balance on current credit accounts. But every situation is different.

If you are still unsure about the reason for the denial after reading the adverse action letter, you can call the lender to find out more.

What should I do if I am denied credit? If you are denied credit, you don’t technically have to do anything.

But that’s probably not your best option. It’s natural to feel bummed about being rejected, but you can use the denial as a motivator to make strides to improve your credit health. Your credit report acts like your financial resume, showing your history of what you’ve done with credit. Read it carefully to see if there are any areas where you could do better. Are your

balances too high? Create a financial plan that includes paying them off as quickly as possible. Did you miss a payment recently? Set up automatic payment options on your monthly bills so you’re always on top of it. Don’t forget to check your report for inaccuracies, as they can occasionally play a role in a denial.

How to Prepare Young Adults for Financial Independence (Statepoint)

s you prepare your young adult for college and beyond, it’s important to talk about the road to financial independence, which includes building healthy credit. This is vital for big life moments like getting a car, apartment, house or job, and your child’s credit report will be the financial resume necessary to help him or her achieve these goals.

Use these tips to talk to your student about how to build a financial resume to be proud of, so he or she can confidently take steps toward financial freedom and flexibility.

• Help build credit history early: It can be challenging to get started on your

own without previous credit history. As a parent, you can help start building your child’s financial resume early by adding him or her as an authorized user on your credit card. Just be sure you always pay on time, because your child will inherit that part of your credit story. Set clear guidelines about card usage before adding anyone as an authorized user. Then, monitor your young adult’s card use and always pay on time, because all reported account activity, including negative information, will impact both your credit.

• Explain the importance of on-time payments: It’s essential to consistently pay all bills on time to build credit health and a story of trustworthiness on your child’s financial resume. If your young adult is rent-

ing, the landlord may report rental payments to the credit reporting agencies, so ensure he or she always pays on time. Talk about putting your student’s name on phone or utility accounts, and then maintaining good standing with on-time payments. Timely student loan payments can also help build credit health. Explain that if accounts go into collections or delinquency, that information will hurt credit health.

• Monitor credit reports regularly: Those building credit for the first time should understand what financial story they’re telling creditors. Young adults who move often should confirm that their current address is on their report, along with accurate, up-to-date information for everything else

Black Women Taking on the Fight Against Diabetes

T

he cost of insulin is skyrocketing and people—especially Black women—are dying because they cannot afford or don’t have access to vital medication.

There is not enough being done to lower the prices of prescription medications that could mean life or death for so many African Americans that depend on it to live.

Over 30 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes—including nearly 13% of all non-Hispanic Black people.

According to the Office of Minority Health at the Department of Health and Human Services, African Americans are 80% more likely to

be diagnosed with diabetes and the majority of them are women.

Many of those suffering from diabetes depend on insulin to regulate their blood sugar to remain healthy so that the food they eat does not threaten their lives. Instead of ensuring that people with diabetes can have access to this life-saving drug, some political leaders have put up road block after road block to make it harder for patients to receive care, despite bipartisan outrage by the excessively high cost of prescription drugs.

This isn’t just bad politics: this is a life or death issue for working families across the country, and African Americans are disproportionately

paying the price.

Instead of focusing on lowering drug costs for all Americans, some lawmakers continue to attack the Affordable Care Act and its health care protections for those that have pre-existing conditions. While they do this, as many as one in four people skips insulin doses or ration prescriptions because of the rising cost. Sadly, some of these people are dying as a result—and many black women are specifically at risk.

African Americans are more likely to develop Type

2 diabetes and unfortunately suffer fatalities from type 2 diabetes at twice the rate of their white counterparts.

Black people are overwhelmingly more likely to suffer from debilitating complications caused by diabetes such as amputations, blindness and kidney failure more than their white counterparts. Due to lack of health resources in predominately African American communities, black people receive poorer quality care and get care later when the disease has progressed.

The risk for getting type 2 diabetes increases with age with the highest incidence occurring between 65-75.

This is precisely the point in life when income decreases.

African American women are especially affected. They

are likely to be care-givers and spend their hard-earned money on ensuring family members are healthy making access to insulin a greater challenge.

The health and wellness of Black women must be a top priority so we must take action.

Recently, a coalition of health care, social justice, and faith organizations launched “Affordable Insulin NOW,” a campaign demanding lower drug costs for those suffering from diabetes.

Together, we are raising our voices, amplifying each other’s stories, building onthe-ground teams, and demanding our policymakers and pharmaceutical companies work together to provide access to high quality and affordable insulin.

We need affordable insulin now. Too many lives depend on it.

020 is the year of the Gold Rat it started on January 25th and will last to February 11th, 2021. According to the Chinese Zodiac there are 12 zodiac animals - they are the: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. A Rat year occurs every 12 years. Recent Rat years are: 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2020.

Those born in Rat

years tend to be smart but not the bravest of the zodiac signs choosing to fight only when corned.

They have a quick wit, they are very observant and creative - giving them the ability to take advantage of opportunities when they occur.

This maybe the reason many those who are born in the year of the Rat tend to be wealthy and prosperous.

Each of the zodiac signs connects to one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Gold (metal) Rat years are (1960 and 2020) they are smart talented but can be hot-tempered. Water Rats (1912 and 1972) are talkative conservative and wise.

Earth Rats (19482008) are honest, with a sense of self-awareness. Fire Rats (1936 and 1996) are energetic, friendly and can be very strong willed. Wood Rats (1924 and 1984) tend to be independent, self-confident and virtuous.

Even though there is no love lost for rats and the word rat is often used in a derogatory manor in most societies, the Rat ranks first in the Chinese zodiac (because it out-smarted all of the other eleven animals according to ancient Chinese folklore) and rat years are believed to be a time of material prosperity .

Rat years can also be times of struggle, yet it

is a time to realize goals and dreams which can manifest into abundance and prosperity. Those burn in a rat year have a heightened sense for survival in times of scarcity.

This year is the beginning of a 12 month cycle that will end in on February 11th 2021.

Many view the 2020’s as a time to prosper but like the Roaring 20’s it will be a time to both prosper and struggle.

2020 will be a year to see things as they really are. If you are born in a rat year, you can be unapologetic in promoting your own agenda. It is said that this sign can be motived by its own self interests which in many cases include money.

Greed can become a problem not only for those born on Rat years but for all the signs at this time. During this Year of the Rat it would be wise for us all to learn to find ways to help others while creating ways to help ourselves. All things move in cycles we are in the first cycle of a new decade and the first of twelve cycles in the Chinese zodic.

E

very Sunday morning, you get to do your favorite thing.

You get to sing.

You know the words to all the songs without even looking. Every tune is one you’ve sang before, one your Mama’s known since she was little, one your Grandma sang once upon a time. All you need is to hear the first few notes and your voice is lifted high, and as in the new book “By and By” by Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Bryan Collier, your praise rises beyond the clouds.

Though you’ve always liked to sing, Charles Albert Tindley’s entire life was a song.

It started as a sad song, when he was born in Maryland nearly 170 years ago: his father was a slave and his mother was a free woman. The law said that Charles was free like his mother and so, when she died and because his father had no rights, the boy suddenly had no parents!

His aunt took him in, and sent him to work on nearby farms.

The work was hard, but singing gave Charles something to think about.

He first learned “chants in the field” and then he heard spirituals sung between the crops. This inspired him to want to learn and so, by the light of an oil lamp and fire in the

hearth, he taught himself to read the newspaper and then, a Bible.

Young Charles was inspired! Soon, he started looking for a church to attend and when he found one, he went – and even though he had no shoes, the preacher there welcomed him and let him testify before the congregation. Charles promised himself that nothing would ever come between him and God, ever.

As he grew with God, Charles Albert Tindley became Reverend Tindley, who had a wife and a church and a congregation all his own. His church helped people during the Great Depression. They had an orchestra. And ev-

ery Sunday, the songs that Reverend Tindley wrote were lifted up to God – just as they are now, this week, perhaps, in your own church…

If your household is like most, music surrounds your child from a variety of sources: oldies, new artists, classics, and hymns. Some come from what may be a surprising source, and “By and By” tells the tale.

And yet, use caution when introducing this story to your kids: for the smallest reader, the story of “The Father of Gospel Music” might need a bit more explaining. Author Carole Boston Weatherford’s poem-biography tells a lot but perhaps not

enough so that preschoolers will easily understand, particularly in its significance. Parents and grandparents will find notes at the end of the book to be of further help – or, alternately, you can let the lush artwork from Bryan Collier teach your child everything he needs to know for now about this inspiring tale.
