Brooklyn Church is Fulfilling Its Dream of Building Affordable Senior Housing

n January 13th, 2019, a sunny Sunday afternoon a Brooklyn community broke ground on an affordable housing development; a project that’s been in the making for more than a decade. The project is the brainchild of the Rev. Dr. Samuel Nicolas of The Evangelic Crusade of Fishers of Men (Evangelical Crusade Christian Church). Nicolas first envisioned the project in 2008 but failed to partner with “the right” developers until 2017.

Now, the multi-million development project at 1488 New York Avenue is slated for completion in a year and a half.

The 7-story mixed-used building will house seniors aged 62 and older whose income is less than 50 percent of the area’s median income.

There are 88 studio units with a single one-bedroom apartment for an on-premises superintendent. The building will also have a community and laundry room, a common-area space and on-site social services.

As per Mandatory Exclusionary Housing (“MIH”) regulations, 10,575 square feet of the ground and cellar space is dedicated to community facilities. The church’s congregation envisions a medical suite that provides geriatric primary care for the area.

The church first purchased the land and building on New York Avenue in 1977 for $65,000. In 1985, when the

congregation outgrew that location, the Haitian church purchased another property at 557 E. 31st St. where the congregation holds its weekly services. In November 2017, the church received $2.9M for the sale of the New York Avenue lot and buildings which sat on the property. The church then reinvested $1.9M back into the development project.

City Councilman Jumaane Williams’ office allocated $500,000.

Williams along with Councilman Mathieu Eugene and Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte were at the groundbreaking.

Rodney Leon, of Rodney Leon Architects, who also designed the monument at

the African Burial Ground in Manhattan, teamed up with Heritage Architecture to design the building. Born in Flatbush, Leon referred to the project as “historical”. “It’s really about all of us coming together to make something happen for the community,” Leon said.

Developers Brisa Builders Corp. aka BEL Community Housing, LLC. first applied for permits in August 2017, according to Managing Member Ericka Keller. The Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) member is an East Flatbush native and Brisa Builders is a family-owned business first opened in 1997. “It’s a tremendous victory to have the ability to come back and develop in the community I grew up in,” said Keller.

The company grew slowly, but Ombligo’s annual revenue, which was $120K in its first year, is now about $7 million.

Edelman started in a garage in South Williamsburg, where he was the only employee. He expanded to another 5-6,000 square foot space in Williamsburg until landing at Industry City complex in 2011., Ombligo has moved spaces twice, first upgrading from

their initial 10,000 square feet to 20,000 and then to their current 30,000 about a year ago.

Employing a staff of 30 and 40%-50% of their workforce is based in Brooklyn, so staying in the borough makes sense. With the growth of manufacturing in Brooklyn, affordable space like that is at a premium and in South Brooklyn, Industry City is already meeting those needs.

The inventory lives within the interior part of the space while people work on the outer edge near the windows. “Computers don’t care about natural light, so we put the homo sapiens on the outside,” says Edelman. Their desks are made from reused steel server chassis and renewable plywood tops –a tangible demonstration of the firm’s commitment to recycling and environmental responsibility.

Edelman emphasizes that because they’re in the “Wild West” of the computer busi-

ness, there aren’t many regulatory requirements they have to follow. So, they self-regulate and hold themselves (and their downstream recycling vendors) to the highest certification standards possible.

Of course, the business is primarily reliant on the inventory that is resold rather than recycled. They changed about five years ago when COO Hani Keirouz came on board. Revenue had reached a plateau at just under $2 million a year so and their exponential growth over the last few years is due to two changes they’ve made as part of their system revamp.

First, they’ve moved from primarily wholesale to primarily retail through their e-commerce site and resale brand, Tech Mike NY(https://techmikeny.com/). And second, in addition to consignment inventory, they now also purchase inventory, which they didn’t do

s the nation commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s holiday, some may find interesting tidbits of little-known or talked about facts and details of the slain civil rights champion.

When he was born on Jan. 15, 1929, King’s name at birth was actually Michael.

His father, a pastor at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church (where the younger King would later also pastor), traveled to Germany and “was inspired by the teachings of the leader of the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther,” recalled Michael Hart, a Christian conservative and host of the syndicated “Michael Hart Show.”

“As a result, King Sr. changed his own name as well as that of his 5-yearold son,” Hart said, stating a fact backed by multiple published records.

Not much was made of the fact that King was a very gifted student which

allowed him to skip grades 9 and 12 before enrolling in Morehouse College at the age of 15, Hart added.

King’s father and maternal grandfather also attended Morehouse.

“Although King was the son, grandson and great grandson of Baptist ministers, he initially had no desire to enter the ministry,” Hart said.

Another lesser-known fact about King centers on his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. When he delivered that monumental and historic dissertation in Washington, it wasn’t the first time.

The civil rights leader first delivered that speech during the “Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom” on May 17, 1957. At the time, King also delivered his first national address on voting rights before a crowd estimated between 15,000 and 30,000.

King’s assassination in Memphis was not the first attempt on his life.

He narrowly escaped an

attempt a decade before on Sept. 20, 1958 in Harlem where he was signing copies his new book, “Stride Toward Freedom.”

Izola Ware Curry approached King and asked if he was Martin Luther King Jr. After he said yes, Curry responded that, “I’ve been looking for you for five years,” and plunged a seven-inch letter opener into King’s chest.

The tip of the blade came to rest alongside his aorta, and King underwent hours of emergency surgery. Surgeons later told King that just one sneeze could have punctured the aorta and killed him.

King was in Memphis in April 1968 to support the strike of the city’s black sanitation workers, and in a speech on the

night before his assassination, he told an audience at Mason Temple Church: “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now … I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you but I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.

And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything.

I’m not fearing any man.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

Less than 24 hours later on April 4,1968 at 6:01 pm Central time as he stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, King was shot and killed by James Earl Ray. King would have been 90 this year.

Schomburg Center Hosts 7th Annual Black Comic Book Festival

he Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture hosted the 7th Annual Black Comic Book Festival at 515 Lenox Avenue on Friday, January 18th through Saturday, January 19th, 2019 from 10 am to 7:30 pm both days. The invite was free and invited comic book fans of all ages to participate in the festival.

The festival took place over three levels at the center and thousands of school kids attended the event.

In the Langston Hughes Auditorium on Friday the festival started with a screening, discussion and questions and answers session on “Little Apple,” the sci-fi drama comic and series from 10 am to 11:15 am. Creating Black Fantasy was the next presentation

and question and answer session. Two more panels in the afternoon were Fear of Black Planet and #FortheCulture: New York City in Comics. The last panel for the evening was AfroPuertorriquenos: Cultural & Social Activism in Comics.

Each year, the Schomburg Center’s Black Comic Book Festival brings creators, illustrators, writers, and independent publishers together

with thousands of collectors, blerds and nerds for two days of programming and activities. The highly-anticipated community event includes interactive panel discussions, a vendor marketplace featuring exclusive titles by Black creators, a cosplay show, and more.

“This is a special time for Black comix creators, writers, and characters,” said Kevin Young, director

of the Schomburg Center.

“With Black Panther, Black Lightning, Octavia Butler’s Kindred, and many others, there’s a resurgence in using this medium to tell our stories, to engage existing comix fans, and to cultivate new ones. We’re excited to be the premier platform where comix creators of color convene to discuss the industry, its future, and to personally interact with

their fans and each other.

Plus, as a longtime comic collector since my teens, it’s quite special to find my fellow fans.”

“The Schomburg Center’s Black Comic Book Festival is not only the place where participants can find the comics and characters they love, but it’s also the place where new connections, relationships, and ideas are made,” said Brian Jones, education director at the Schomburg Center. “There’s no better place than Harlem to be the home for Black comix culture. We’re looking forward to the conversations that will happen at the coming annual event, and to the ways in which we’ll continue supporting the Black comix community and nurture its growth.”

Black Comic Book Festival participants were encouraged to wear their favorite cosplay costumes and to register on-site for the annual cosplay show. Participants were also invited to contribute to the Schomburg Center’s growing collection of Black independent comic books by bringing single copies of old or new titles from their home collection.

All donations will become a part of the Schomburg Center’s unique and growing archive documenting Black comix and the Black speculative arts movement.

Macy’s Culinary Council Spotlights Israeli Cuisine with Chef Eden

n Thursday, January 17th, 2019, De Gustibus Cooking School located on the 9th floor of Macy’s Herald Square hosted a culinary demonstration for one of the newest chefs on Macy’s Culinary Council, Chef Eden Grinshpan.

Chef Eden is a co-founder and Executive Chef at DEZ restaurant.

Eden Grinshpan, is a Canadian-Israeli Chef and TV personality that is best known for hosting Cooking Channel’s Eden Eats and Food Network’s Top Chef Canada. Citing her tenth-grade obsession with cooking shows as the catalyst to her culinary career, Grinshpan’s budding passion for food and baking led her to enroll in Le

Cordon Bleu in London where she graduated with a “Grand Diplome” in both Pastry and Cuisine followed by the management program at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City.

While working at Babycakes in lower Manhattan, Grinshpan produced her first reel of Eden

Eats, which led to a show on the Cooking Channel.

Since then, Chef Eden has been a featured judge on Food Network’s Chopped Canada, Cooking Channel’s Sugar Showdown and Donut Showdown, a guest co-host on VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz” and is currently the host of Top Chef Canada.

Have you done everything possible to insure that your veins and arteries, your muscles . . . and all your vital organs are functioning at optimum capacity? I

t seems that everyone these days has a friend following a “keto-friendly” diet -- a low-carb eating plan designed to make the body burn fat more efficiently.

Developed years ago to control diabetes and then later to treat epilepsy in children, different versions of the keto diet have gained traction as effective weight loss plans, according to The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

“One thing all keto diets have in common is that they restrict carbohydrates in favor of healthy fats in an effort to achieve nutritional ketosis -the state in which your body burns fat instead of glucose,” explains registered dietitian, Courtney McCormick.

The experts at the South Beach Diet are now taking a safe, effective approach to keto by offering a keto-friendly plan, and are providing helpful tips to get started.

1. Count net carbs: A keto-friendly diet is based around the idea of net carbs.

Limit yourself to no more than 50 grams of net carbs daily.

While this isn’t considered a strict keto diet, it follows the keto plan for those looking for assistance with getting started.

To calculate this number, take your total grams of fiber and grams of sugar alcohols consumed and subtract that from your total grams of carbohydrates. The resulting number should be within the 40 to 50 net carb range.

2. No beans, legumes or fruits: To keep your overall daily net carbs within a certain range, even good carbs like beans, legumes and those in most fruits are off-limits ex-

cept for occasional indulgences. Stick to non-starchy veggies only, like leafy greens, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms and zucchini.

3. Water is essential: Your fiber intake is reduced on a keto-friendly diet with the elimination of whole grains, beans and legumes. For digestive health and to ward off constipation, it’s important that you drink sufficient amounts of water.

“We recommend drinking at least 64 ounces per day on the South Beach Diet Keto-Friendly plan,” says McCormick. “Plus, water keeps you fuller longer, prevents overeating before meals and may boost metabolism if it’s ice cold.”

4. Variety is key: Following a keto diet could put you at risk for deficiencies in micronutrients, including selenium, magnesium, phosphorus and vitamins B and C. To compensate, take a multivitamin and

stay away from eating the exact same thing each day. Mix it up with an array of lean proteins, healthy fats and a daily serving of non-starchy veggies. Pay attention to changes in your health like hair loss, vision changes, aches, pains or weakness. Simple blood tests can reveal levels of vitamins and minerals.

5. Plan special occasions: Carbs are king at special meals and holidays. Communicating your needs with family and friends beforehand can help you avoid peer pressure and garner support for your efforts. Offer to bring a keto-friendly dish so you’ll be sure to have something to eat.

You know that having a bad relationship is easy.

Having a good one takes effort, and it might start with “Making It Work”

Doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, that’s what everybody needs but not everyone has learned to do it right.

Maybe early role models argued loudly or behind closed doors, leaving you with no template for dis-

agreement. Maybe one parent slept around, imprinting a sense of insecurity. Or perhaps your childhood was peppered with lessons that just don’t work anymore.

Whatever you learned early in life, the first rule to keep now is to love yourself. You can’t know what you want in a partner unless you know what you want for you. Loving yourself is the basis of all good relationships.

Treat your body like the precious thing God intended. Stop being promiscuous, and don’t let your partner talk you into anything that’s wrong for you and what you want from a relationship.

“Keep your standards,” says Gaskins.

Pay close attention to potential mates: they’ll show you who they are and it’s up to you to see it. If you’re still falling in love, ask yourself seriously if you can live with their actions and ideals for the next four or five decades. Don’t put up with liars, name-callers, Mama’s Babies, profanity-users, or anyone who abuses substances.

“Be selfless” in your relationship by putting your partner first – and that means no secret-spilling to friends. Remember that both of you will bear the blame for any rift in the partnership. Learn how to disagree. And finally, know what’s worth breaking up over; prayer and a little soul-searching might surprise you.

“Make It Work” is absolutely not a book for everyone.

Page after page after page of it is filled with so many overgeneralizations that it’s almost laughable: the warning tones in the abundance of women-dothis, men-do-that scenarios feel like a marriage manual from the 1950s.

The “female” is painted as a wily being, painfully desperate for love, using her body to “chase” a man; men are portrayed as being unable to think of anything but the bedroom.

Readers are cautioned against having opposite-sex friends, because, well, one of you might not be able to maintain control. Yes, Eisenhower-Era readers, it’s that clichéd.

But then, just when you think your eyes have rolled plumb out of your head, author Tony A. Gaskins Jr. surprises readers with information that is so useful and real that you’ll gasp. It’s advice that makes incredible sense.

And yes, it could help you do what the title promises.

Finding that, though, may be like a treasure hunt that yields rhinestones. Gleaning lessons you can use may be a lesson in frustration. Yes, this book is right for the right person, but for many readers, “Make It Work,” won’t.
