We can begin to exhale. Biden and his administration are officially in charge. Now I feel that I can begin to plan for the future. i now see past the Pandemic and "Hope" for America in 2021.

I am also excited about having Kamala Harris as our Vice President. I am learning more about Kamala everyday and in this issue our book reviewer is offering a book that will give you more information about just who Kamala Harris is. (see page 21) The country celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this past Monday. Celebrations looked much dfferent from the past due to COVID, however there were some significant and movnng tributes. (see pages 12-13).

PONDER THIS! Not Out of the Comfort Zone Yet

he front door of my apartment is the symbol of my haven of safety. I give considerable thought to where I am going and the necessity of the journey every time, I approach the doorknob. Securing a face covering and plastic gloves when shopping are common wearables to divert the devious infectious COVID-19 lurking about.

How long such safety precautions will continue to be a mandate is not within

my comprehension.

However, I do believe there is a light in the tunnel and help is at hand. Vaccines have arrived, millions will take it and rightfully so as a step in the right direction. That does not mean a guarantee of prevention from

COVID, or a license to unmask and take to the streets as if we are home free. Many will smugly declare they are immune after taking the vaccine. Not so fast, my friend.

If you’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19, you might think you don’t need to wear a mask or practice social distancing any longer. The truth has come from medical experts saying we must continue to wear masks and take steps to protect each other.

The body needs time for the vaccine to kick in. “Vaccines work by triggering the immune system to make antibodies and mobilize certain cells to be ready to fight a virus like COVID-19. But this does not happen right away. Despite getting both vaccine doses, you might still be contagious to others.”

The clinical trials testing the two vaccines looked only at whether they protected people from getting sick from COVID-19 – not whether the vaccines stopped people from spreading the virus. There are still questions in search of answers – how long protection lasts or whether a vaccinated person could still pass the COVID-19 virus on to others. Studies of both available vaccines are ongoing.

While we take the

first step in fighting the virus, we must wait in great anticipation for the ultimate cure or total prevention.

In some states across this nation and worldwide, the pandemic is still raging, and a new strain is running rampant alongside the initial coronavirus outbreak.

Recently, I decided to walk to a doctor’s appointment in lieu of the comfort zone of my car. I walked, I looked around, I cried, and I prayed passing the multitude of people, my people, unmasked standing in groups talking vigorously. Some masks hanging below the chin as if it were a turtleneck sweater and far too many with no mask visible at all. It was heart wrenching to see so many seniors in the mix.

It is easy to look at what others are not do-

ing and stand in denial of our own actions. We judge others and forget to look in the mirror at our own neglect and disconnect from what is the right thing to do.

We cannot survive the pandemic or the numerous other factors and factions that exist in our communities, if we are not willing to practice consistent participation in what is good and what works for the good of us all.

WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EACH OTHER. Stay steady, Beloved.

A letter to my daughter: “From the Promise to the Precipice”

y Sophia: Soon, you will witness a first-time event in American history, the swearing-in of Kamala Harris, the first woman to be elected Vice President of the United States. The significance of her being an African American woman, and one of Nana’s sorority sisters, might escape you. After all, Barack Obama was president when you were born.

Four years later, a woman, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was the favored candidate for president. When you awoke on November 9, 2016, you learned that some things that seem certain do not always happen. When you learned that Mrs. Clinton lost the vote in the Electoral College, you cried. As a result of that experience, you have learned more about the highs and lows of politics than most children might be expected to know. Nevertheless, having people of color and women in positions of power may not seem that momentous to you.

Babygirl, the events of January 6, 2021 have changed everything.

And I’m sad to say you may be living in some of the most dangerous days in this country since the Civil War. There is a new word I will introduce to you today. Precipice.

In the context of our politics, precipice means “a situation of great

peril.” Since the election in November, there has been a nonstop drumbeat of disinformation (lies) about the way the election was conducted and its outcome. Anywhere else in the world, winning an election by over 7 million votes means you are declared the winner. Sadly, because of the Electoral College, not here! That has created room for the lies to take hold and inspired the riot that occurred at the Capitol.

I regret that we, your parents and ancestors, have allowed an atmosphere to take hold in our country that is unworthy of you and your peers, with angry mobs storming the Capitol building threatening to “hang” the vice president, and to harm members of Congress. You are certainly not seeing us at our best and I don’t want you to accept this ugliness as normal. Indeed, this country was founded on the highest written ide-

als. The Declaration of Independence says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men (and women) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

There were many times in the past 245 years when our country did not live up to those ideals, especially for those of us who are the descendants of stolen Africans.

Indeed, these sentiments often remain aspirational (we hope they will become true someday), nevertheless we still choose to believe in the “promise of America.”

After January 6th, our confidence is somewhat shaken.

Yet we remain determined to, as President Abraham Lincoln said, to remember that “we are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break

our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

He gave this speech in 1865 near the end of the Civil War. He was reminding us that despite our differences, we are not enemies.

While events may have strained our bonds (as Americans) if we choose to work through the hard times and stay together, the “better angels of our nature” will help us find our way out of the darkness to a better place where we are all seen and valued as equals with rights that are respected and protected. I know times are hard, but don’t ever give up. Time does not march backward, always forward!

We will try to do our best and then, we pray, your generation will do even better!

Make Your Home a Sanctuary – Even If COVID-19 Arrives on Your Doorstep (Statepoint)

Winter has brought with it a resurgence in COVID-19 cases. And while the rollout of preventive vaccines has begun, the manufacture and delivery of sufficient doses to inoculate all Americans will take months. Because the disease can be unpredictable, everyone should take precautions to mitigate its spread, especially when it makes an appearance at home.

While the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends physical distancing, mask-wearing and other health-related measures, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) also recommends additional guidance when a household member is known to be infected, to help reduce risk

to other household members.

First, prepare a clean sanctuary within your home, either an isolation space – for someone who has contracted COVID-19 – or a protected space – for someone who may be at high risk of getting the coronavirus.

Location is especially important. When the weather is warmer, the ideal isolation space should be on a low floor; in cooler months, a high floor.

However, for protected spaces, the location should be just the opposite: on a high floor in warmer weather, and on a low floor in chilly weather. The reason for this is to prevent having air naturally gravitate towards protected spaces as a result of seasonal temperature differences.

Earmarking space is a good start. To further optimize the space for preventing the spread of infection, you can address these key elements as applicable to your home, understanding there is variation in home construction, HVAC systems, and climate: • Windows: Keep windows closed as much as possible throughout the home. In an isolation space, use a window-installable product to provide exhaust ventilation. In a protected space, supply filtered, outdoor air.

• Doors: For an isolation or protected space, always keep the door closed. For added safety, install a draft stopper under the door or hang plastic sheets in front of the room’s entrance.

• Vents: If you have a forced-air heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, seal all vents in the isolated or protected space.

By doing so, you’ll prevent its air from entering other rooms.

However, if the room you select has the home’s only HVAC return vent, it may be wisest to choose another room.

• Portable heating/cooling: If you’re able to seal off all vents, you may require a por-

table room heater or air conditioner so that thermal conditions can remain comfortable.

• Private bathroom: If possible, designate a private bathroom for use only by the occupant of the separate room. For a protected space, only run the bathroom exhaust fan when the

facilities are in use. For an isolated space, run the bathroom exhaust fan continuously at high speed.

• Air purification: A system such as the Filtrete Air Purifier with HEPA filtration can help capture unwanted air particles, including viruses and bacteria, in a protected space. Be sure to change the filter regularly, per instructions or according to the device’s electronic filter life indicator. In First Act of New Congress, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Introduces Reparations Bill

ith the start of the 117th Congress this week, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Budget, and Homeland Security, has reaffirmed her quest for legislation that could eventually provide reparations for slavery victims.

On Monday, January 4, 2021, Jackson Lee re-introduced H.R. 40, a bill that would fund a committee to explore whether Black Americans should receive reparations for slavery.

While it does not directly introduce payments, the Commission would study racial inequities and policy solutions.

“In short, the Commission aims to study the impact of slavery and continuing discrimination against African-Americans, resulting directly and indirectly from slavery to segregation to the desegregation process and the present day,” stated Jackson Lee. The Congresswoman also serves as the Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations.

“The commission would also make recommendations concerning any form of apology and 10

compensation to begin the long-delayed process of atonement for slavery.”

Under H.R. 40, the Commission would comprise members appointed by the White House and both Congress chambers.

The bill has had increased support with 147 co-sponsors in the House, all Democrats.

Because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) and Republicans in the Senate have indicated strong opposition to taking the measure up in that Chamber, the Georgia runoff elections count as a huge step toward getting the bill passed.

Two Senate seats won in Georgia, with Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock has created a possible support for the bill.

“The impact of slavery and its vestiges continues to affect African Americans and indeed all Americans in communities throughout our nation,” Jackson Lee remarked.

“This legislation is intended to examine the institution of slavery in the colonies and the United States from 1619 to the present, and further recommend appropriate remedies. Since the initial introduction of this legislation, its proponents have made substantial progress in

elevating the discussion of reparations and reparatory justice at the national level and joining the mainstream international debate on the issues.”

Jackson Lee noted that some have “tried to deflect” the importance of these conversations by focusing on individual monetary compensation.

“The real issue is whether and how this nation can come to grips with the legacy of slavery that still infects current society. Through legislation, resolutions, news, and litigation, we are moving closer to making more strides in the movement toward reparations,” Jackson Lee said.

The Texas Congresswoman noted that she expects more co-sponsors during the new Congress.

“Today, there are more people at the table — more activists, more scholars, more CEO’s, more state and local officials, and more Members of Congress,” she declared.

“However, despite this progress and the election of the first American President of African descent, the legacy of slavery lingers heavily in this nation.

While we have focused on the social effects of slavery and segregation, its continuing economic implications remain largely ignored by mainstream analysis.”

Jackson Lee continued: “These economic issues are the root cause of many critical issues in the African American community today, such as education, healthcare, and criminal justice policy, including policing practices. The call for reparations represents a commitment to entering a constructive dialogue on the role of slavery and racism in shaping present-day conditions in our community and

American society.

“I believe that H.R. 40 is a crucial piece of legislation because it goes beyond exploring the economic implications of slavery and segregation.

“It is a holistic bill in the sense that it seeks to establish a commission to also examine the moral and social implications of slavery.

“In short, the Commission aims to study the impact of slavery and to address continu-

ing disparities in the African American community and discrimination against the African American community, resulting directly and indirectly from slavery to segregation.

“After its study, the Commission would offer proposals concerning the long-term impact of slavery and bring about solutions to these ongoing disparities in the African American Community.”

Participants include Mayor Bill deBlasio, Senator Chuck Shumer, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, former Congressman Charles B. rangel, Brooklyn Borough President eric Adams and several other candidates for mayor .Earlier in the day on January 18th a group of the nation’s most renowned Black clergy led by Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Calvin O. Butts, III hosted the Choose Healthy Life Black Clergy Conclave.

The event brought together over 100 of the nation’s leading Black clergy who are stepping into the breach to address COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on the Black community. The virtual conclave took place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

“Today’s event signals the Black clergy’s continued resolve to create a strong, sustainable and concerted effort on the national and local level to combat the devastation that COVID-19 has inflicted on the Black community. Testing, preventative health measures and vaccine education are major keys to saving lives and stopping the destruction this virus leaves in its wake,” said civil rights 12

The Conclave convened over 100 Black clergy, America’s leading public health officials, nonprofit leaders and corporate leaders for panels and Q&As on COVID-19 in the Black community. The Conclave also briefed leaders on the Choose Healthy Life Action Plan announced in November – a sustainable, scalable and transferable approach to address health disparities by providing services such as COVID testing and vaccine education in five major US cities. Choose Healthy Life previously hosted a Black Clergy Summit in December, featuring Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

ifty-three years after Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination, and 38 years after his birth date became a national federal holiday, America is now facing another pivotal moment of national racial reckoning.

While parades and other festive gatherings for the heroic civil rights leader will not occur this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, national and local organizations throughout the country did honor Dr. King’s legacy.

In Maryland, the nonprofit Civic Works welcomed groups of volunteers to participate in its annual MLK Day of Service. The 9 a.m. event included 150 volunteers banding together across nine sites [both physically with Covid-19 safety precautions, and virtually] to help green a vacant lot in Baltimore, landscape urban farms, sort clothes for AmeriCorps members, writing cards to seniors, and clean public spaces.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music – or BAM – hosted an 11 a.m. tribute that included a keynote address from Black Lives Matter Global Network founder Alicia Garza. The event streamed on bam.org and also BAM’s YouTube and Vimeo channels.

he uncertainty and developing nature of the coronavirus pandemic continues to generate related misinformation. Fact-checkers have been hard at work debunking falsehoods online, with nearly 10,000 fact checks about the pandemic currently showing up across our products.

The global rollout of COVID-19 vaccines is exacerbating a perennial problem of misinformation about immunization.

To support additional debunking efforts, the Google News Initiative is launching a COVID-19 Vaccine Counter-Misinformation Open Fund worth up to $3

million.

While the COVID-19 infodemic has been global in nature, misinformation has also been weaponized to target specific populations. Some of the available research also suggests that the audiences coming across misinformation and those seeking fact checks don’t necessarily overlap.

For this reason, the Open Fund is welcoming applications from projects that aim to broaden the audience of fact checks, particularly with those who may be disproportionately affected by misinformation in mind.

The fund is global and open to news organizations of every size which have

a proven track record in fact-checking and debunking activities or partner with an organization with such recognition.

We will prioritize collaborative projects with an interdisciplinary team and clear ways to measure success. Eligible applications might include a partnership between an established fact-checking project and a media outlet with deep roots in a specific community, or a collaborative platform for journalists and doctors to jointly source misinformation and publish fact checks.

A global team of Googlers will review applications. The jury that will choose grantees is com-

Fighting Flu and Staying Healthy All Year With Medicaid and CHIP (Statepoint)

ach year, millions of Americans get sick from “seasonal influenza” (“the flu”).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 38 million people got sick with the flu during the 2019-2020 flu season. The flu is more dangerous than the common cold and children are at higher risk for developing serious complications. More than 12 million children under the age of 18 were diagnosed with flu last year, and of those children diagnosed, more than 52,000 were hospitalized. However, there are preventive steps parents can take to protect their

children and family from the flu.

Flu viruses change each year, so the best way to keep your kids and teens healthy is to make sure they get their yearly flu shot. The flu is a serious illness, but getting the flu shot helps lower the number of hospital visits and deaths.

The CDC recommends getting a flu shot early in the season, but getting it at any time during the flu season can help.

Medicaid offers free

or low-cost health insurance for eligible kids up to age 21; the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) covers eligible kids up to age 19.

Medicaid and CHIP covers vaccinations for children, like the flu shot, but also other services like preventive care, wellchild visits, dental and vision care, and mental and behavioral health care. Eligibility varies by state and depends on your household size and income. On average, a family of four earning up to $50,000 a year or more may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. Enrollment is open all year, but you have to renew your health coverage yearly.

W

ater has always been an important symbol of Taoism. The legendary Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu wrote in The Tao Te Ching (a book considered the foundation of Taoism) that “nothing under heaven is more yielding, but when it attacks the hardest substance cannot prevail.” Over

70 percent of the earth is covered with water and 70 percent of an infant’s body consists of water.

Taoists consider water to be the element of the winter season.

The positive emotions of water are gentleness and happiness while the negative emotions of water are fear and sadness. Studies have shown that water responds to thought and the emotions connected to that thought; we cry when we are happy, and we cry when we are sad.

The average adult male’s body is about 60% water and the average women’s body is about 55% water. If

emotions can influence water, then negative emotions can be unhealthy as water is the most abundant molecule in the body. Masaru Emoto has conducted years of research focused on how water responds to music, words, and thought. With the use of high-speed photography of magnified water crystals, Emoto’s research (www.masaruemoto.net) shows how water crystals can change based on positive or negative influences.

In his many books on water, Emoto shows pictures of how music and even thought can change how crystallized water drops appear.

Two of my favorites are Love Thyself: The Message from Water

and The Hidden Message in Water. If you consider how music, thought, and words can affect crystallized drops of water, imagine what they can do to the water in the human body.

The kidneys are the yin organs of winter and the bladder is the yang organ of winter.

Both organs have a close relationship with the water in our body making them sensitive to the emotions of happiness and sadness.

Drinking too much alcohol during the winter season can cause an imbalance in the kidneys. The kidneys can only move about six cups of liquid per day.

If the kidneys become overloaded with toxins after drinking too

much during the winter, the immune system can weaken. It would be wise to keep this possibility in mind whether you are drinking out of happiness, sadness, depression, or fear.

Water is an immensely powerful element; it can be considered the mother of life. On June 20, 2009, at 8:03 pm ET, Space.com reported that NASA had found evidence of water on Mars. If water is truly the mother of life, water on Mars may be the first sign of life outside of our universe.

As we move into the New Year, try to maintain a positive attitude full of gratitude. Your ability to balance your mind, body, and spirit will improve your quality of life. You will feel

a sense of internal peace because the water in your body will respond to your mood and your winter water organs of the bladder and kidneys will be healthy.

During the current health crisis, alkaline water is important to drink to maintain your bodies high alkaline levels. We only become sick when our body is acidic. A virus cannot survive in an alkaline environment.

Your best defense against COVID-19 or any COVID virus is to make the water and other fluids in your body alkaline.

O

ne step at a time.

That’s how you get anywhere: methodical, with purpose, one foot in front of the other until you get where you’re going. You never waver. You never take shortcuts, side roads, or easy-outs, and as in “Kamala’s Way” by Dan Morain, you keep your eyes on the goal every minute of the journey.

At this point in time, Kamala Harris almost needs no introduction.

Much of what you need to know is summed up in this: says Morain, she “misses little and forgets even less.” Still, a lot of things about her life were left out of her biography, “The Truths We Hold,” or

ignored by most articles written about her.

Much has been said about Harris’ mother but little has been said about her father, for example.

Harris herself has said that they were “not close,” and Morain offers reasons why, as well as some background on Harris’ paternal side.

Outside of California, Harris’ rise to political fame might be perceived as meteoric, but the truth is that it took more than thirty years of focus. While studying at Howard University, Harris worked as an intern in Senator Alan Cranston’s office; after passing the California bar exam, she became Deputy District Attorney at the

Alameda County District Attorney’s office and she got a peek at politics; she worked in “the hothouse of San Francisco criminal justice politics,” was later elected to the office once held by Cranston in the Senate, and is now in the second-highest position in America. Along the way, as one can expect from a no-nonsense woman, there were controversies.

Morain shares little-discussed details of Harris’ relationship with bigger-than-life Willie Brown, former mayor of San Francisco. He writes deeply of Harris’ vow not to call for the death penalty on any California inmate. He explains the strange tie between Harris and Kimberly Guilfoyle.

And he writes of Harris, who gets things done and doesn’t “care that she had ruffled [someone’s] feelings.”

The first time you see “Kamala’s Way,” hold it in your hands, and think a minute. Did you read her biography “The Truths We Hold”? If so, then you’ve already read about thirty percent of this book; indeed, author Dan Morain liberally uses quotes from the bio. Is the other seventy percent – the parts you haven’t read – worth reading?

Probably, yes, if you’re excited beyond measure to have Kamala Harris as Vice President, because Morain gives details on Harris’ life that will be new to a good number of readers, espe-

cially political outsiders and non-Californians. These are the things Harris herself has avoided discussing, but Morain hasn’t.

They’re not all hot-button, though; in fact, Morain shares stories of Harris when the cameras are gone, and he does it in a way that’s not sensational or tabloid-ish. Instead, it’s thorough, honest, and a quick-to-read education about our new Second in Command, so if you think you don’t know much about her, add it to your Must-Read pile.
