Happy New Year!

This upcoming Monday, January 20th we will celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's Birthday. Each year at this time I am reminded about my childhood growing up in Savannah Georgia where my family members were very much a part of the civil rights sit ins' marches, etc. I remember as a child seeing the separate "white only" water fountains, movie theaters, etc. I did attend "black only" schools. I was taken to meetings where I learned the freedom songs and "We Shall Overcome" continues to ring in my ears. I also recall after Woolworth was integrated my grandmother taking me there to have a meal at the counter. However, I also remember. most of the businesses in our neighborhoods were black-owned and I don't recall an employment problem. On Monday we celebrate a man who dedicated and gave his life for our civil rights. Monday would be a good time for us to reflect on our own commitments to our community.

U.S. Census Bureau Announces Hourly Pay Rate Increase to $28.00/ Hour for 2020 Census Workers in New York City Pay Off Those Holiday Bills by Earning $28.00 an Hour Working in Your Own Community!

ith less than three months until the 2020 Census begins, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today it will increase the hourly pay rate for census takers in New York City from $25.00 to $28.00 an hour. The pay increase is effective Monday, January 6, 2020. For more information or to apply, visit 2020census. gov/jobs today.

The Census positions are a great way for holiday seasonal workers, students, retirees and workers in the gig economy to line up spring and summer employment opportunities. To apply, residents must have the following qualifications: • Be at least 18 years old • Have a valid Social Security number • Be a U.S. citizen* • Have a valid email address • Be registered with the Selective Service System or have a qualifying exemption, if you are a male born after Dec. 31, 1959 The 2020 Census Jobs website allows applicants to apply for a range of positions, including census takers, recruiting

assistants, office operations supervisors, clerks, census field supervisors and other positions by completing a single application online. Census jobs offer flexible work hours, including daytime, evenings and weekends, paid training, and travel reimbursement.

Applicants will be placed in an applicant pool for 2020 Census positions in which they qualify for as jobs become available in their area. About the 2020 Census The U.S. Constitution mandates a head count,

every ten years, of all residents living in the United States and its territories.

Census counts determine how many seats each state is allocated in the U.S. House of Representative as well as how over $675 billion in federal dollars are distributed annually.

Individual responses are protected by federal law, never to be shared with any other governmental department, court, or law enforcement agency.

Responding to the 2020 Census is easy with 4 ways to respond: online, by phone, on paper, or with the help of a Census taker. * Non-citizens may be hired in certain circumstances. Consistent with law, the Census Bureau will hire non-citizen translators as census takers who are legally entitled to work in the U.S. on an as-needed-basis during 2020 peak field operations, if there are no available citizens who can be hired with the necessary non-English language skills. rooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and the Prospect Park Alliance encouraged all Brooklynites to attend one of a series of 2020 Census job fairs beginning next week at Brooklyn Borough Hall.

The announcement is part of Borough President Adams’ #MakeBrooklynCount initiative, a collaboration with local community-based organizations to ensure Brooklyn is accurately counted in the upcoming 2020 Census.

“Now that 2020 has arrived, it’s more critical than ever that we mobilize all available resources to ensure accurate representation in

this year’s census. Becoming a census worker isn’t just a good job opportunity—it allows Brooklynites from diverse backgrounds to get engaged in an important civic mission. I encourage everyone to come to our job fairs to learn more about how we can help our neighbors get counted!” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

“Prospect Park Alliance is committed to helping Brooklyn achieve a fair, accurate, and inclusive count. As a beloved haven for all communities across Brooklyn, Prospect Park is the ideal location to engage hard-to-

Community Reinvestment Act Changes Expected to Benefit Low- and Moderate-Income Communities Proposed Changes to the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA)

roposed changes to the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) could lead to greatly enhanced investment in low- and moderate-income (LMI) communities around the country, according to Grovetta N. Gardineer, senior deputy comptroller for Bank Supervision Policy with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).

The OCC is soliciting comments on a proposal to modernize the CRA by clarifying what counts, updating where activity counts, measuring performance more objectively, and making reporting more timely and transparent.

“The CRA has a very noble goal of making sure banks meet their responsibility for lending, investing in and servicing communities where they do business, with a focus on low- and moderate-income individuals and areas,” Gardineer said. “The statute remains a noble goal, but the implementation is outdated and, in many ways, ineffective.”

The CRA was enacted in

1977 as a direct response to redlining, an unethical practice whereby banks and other lending institutions made it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for residents of poor, inner-city communities to borrow money, get a mortgage, take out insurance or access other financial services.

Redlining did not take into consideration an individual’s qualifications or creditworthiness.

Gardineer explains that a primary reason the CRA needs updating is because the banking industry has changed fundamentally in the more than 40 years since it was implemented.

“Among other things,” Gardineer adds, “we did not have the internet in 1977, and interstate branching was not available.

“Banks were limited to where they had branches or where their home office was located, so they had a completely geographical approach,” she continued. “With all of the tremendous technological advancements in recent years, banks now offer products and services across the country regardless of geography.”

The OCC hopes stakeholders will carefully review the proposed changes and submit comments so that a final rule can be issued in the first half of 2020.

Noting that the new CRA rules would fight displacement and harmful gentrification – a high priority in many minority communities – Gardineer points out that the OCC is making a concerted effort to work closely with such organizations as the NAACP and the National Urban League.

To that end, OCC has invested the time to meet with thousands of concerned individuals “discussing the issues that need to be addressed.” Meetings are currently scheduled with Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, and Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League. Another recent outreach effort to solicit public input included an Atlanta bus tour with Ambassador Andrew Young.

There are still too many underserved communities in the U.S. that are “CRA desserts,”

Gardiner notes. “No matter what their geographical footprint, we want banks to be able to offer a broad array of services to communities and individuals throughout the nation.

“Given the wide spectrum of individuals who we know will benefit from this rule making process,” Gardiner said, “it is particularly important to the Comptroller to make sure that we spread a wide net, that we make ourselves available and that we share our vision.

“We have really worked hard over the past two years,” she concluded, “closing a loophole that allowed wealthy people to get CRA credit for investing in LMI areas. That is not what CRA was ever intended to do. And that is being directly responsive to some of the feedback we have been receiving.”

Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture Hosts 8th Annual Black Comic Book Festival - January 17 and 18 Special Guest, Rap Icon Darryl “DMC” McDaniels

he Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture will host its eighth annual Black Comic Book Festival on January 17 and January 18 from 10 AM to 8 PM. Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, member of the legendary hip hop group Run-DMC and founder of the independent publishing house Darryl Makes Comics, will participate in the panel discussion “Hip Hop and Comics in 3D” with Andre Davis and Dawud Anyabwile on January 18 at 2 PM. The Schomburg Center’s Annual Black Comic Book Festival celebrates

the rich tradition of Black comics featuring free, public panel discussions with notable artists and writers, film screenings, a cosplay show and competition, and exhibit tables with premier Black comic creators from across the country. The two-day event connects comic fans, creators, bloggers, independent publishers, and collectors of all ages.

“This festival brings together the large and growing community of Black comics writers and artists, at all levels, from the grassroots independents to the blockbuster silver screen projects,” said the Schom-

or many, the new year is about establishing goals for the year ahead. But where should you start? As we age, an increasing number of us link our emotional and physical well-being to our overall health. After all, you can’t do the things you’d like if you aren’t healthy.

With that in mind, Cigna and its Medicare Advantage (MA) fitness partner, the Silver&Fit Healthy Aging and Exercise Program, share these five tips to help older adults get fitter and stronger and be less stressed and happier in 2020: 1. Hit the gym. Exercise is a proven way to help you get fitter and stronger, improve balance, lose weight, reduce blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health, manage

pain and even be more social. Many gyms offer such options as free weights, machines, pools, classes, private instructors and other amenities that can inspire you to try new things. Prefer working out with others? Group classes can help you discover a new exercise, stick to a schedule and find exercise buddies. If you’re new to exercise, remember that slow and steady is the way to build good habits, avoid injury and achieve health goals. It’s always a good idea to consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program.

Can’t afford a gym membership? You may be surprised to learn that many MA plans offer exercise programs at top fitness centers and YMCAs for no extra cost. Check your plan for details.

2. Nourish your body. For optimal health, nourish your body with healthy, energizing foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, fish and healthy oils, such as olive oil and sesame oil. Limit pre-packaged, processed foods. Set an achievable goal. Try cutting out one unhealthy food each month, such as sugary soft drinks or chips. Your body will love you for it! Also, stay hydrated, especially when exercising.

At the same time, eliminate unhealthy habits, such as smoking or drinking alcohol in excess. With an MA plan, you may be able to get help with smoking cessation products or alcohol counseling at no extra cost.

3. Stress less. Stress can be toxic and debilitating.

Develop a “PLAN” to deal

with it. According to Cigna’s Dr. Stuart L. Lustig, this includes identifying a Period of time to unwind, a Location to de-stress, an Activity to enjoy and the Name of someone with whom you can talk. Yoga, tai chi and meditation may help you cope with stress, as well as going for walks, listening to music, comedy or audio books -- or even coloring. If you’re experiencing extreme stress, talk to your doctor. Remember, the mind and body are connected, and stress takes its toll on physical health.

4. Get social. According to a 2018 Cigna survey, loneliness in America has reached epidemic levels. Nearly half of Americans report sometimes or always feeling alone (46 percent) or left out (47 percent). Loneliness has been shown to negatively impact physical and mental health.

Alleviate loneliness by taking one proactive step each week.

For example, call or get coffee with friends or family, join a club or volunteer. You can also connect with other active adults on social media.

Are You Ready for College Entrance Exams?

hile a student’s long record of academic achievement is generally the most important measure that colleges take under consideration during the admissions process, getting as prepared for one’s college entrance exams as possible is a great idea.

Here are a few things to know going into the process: • Almost all four-year institutions of higher learning require that candidates submit either SAT or ACT scores with some requiring strictly one or the other.

Certain selective schools also require SAT Subject Tests and AP Tests. Check which tests you’ll need to take to apply to your

schools of choice. You may also want to check the average scores of last year’s incoming freshmen.

• Find out whether the schools to which you are applying look at the score of every test you take or only your top score. If they look at every score, you may want to avoid taking the test until you’re feeling completely confident.

If they look at only the top score, consider taking the test multiple times (if money and time allow) until you get the score with which you’re satisfied.

• Each institution weighs scores a bit differently.

Some colleges use entrance exam scores in order to place incoming freshmen in classes. Some schools use the scores to award scholar-

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebrations in Harlem and Across NYC By: Erin Lewenauer

onday, January 20th, 2020 brings Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day leading into Black History Month. Across Harlem, New York City, and the world, we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and keep his legacy alive.

As one of two federal holidays designated as a national day of service (“a day on, not a day off”), it provides a time to reflect and an opportunity to volunteer in communities across the city. The day offers a chance early in the year to get off on the right foot, join in, contribute, give back, and to look at where you stand and whom you stand beside.

King was the chief leader for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement and successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law.

The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began after his assassination in 1968.

President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983 and it was first observed three years later. Some states resisted observing the holiday, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays, but by the year 2000 it was officially observed in all 50 states.

as well. In Hiroshima, Japan there is a special, unifying banquet at the mayor’s office.

Since 1987 in Wassenaar, The Netherlands, a tribute and dinner has been held that includes young people and veterans of the Civil Rights Movement. The evening always ends with everyone holding hands in a circle, singing “We Shall Overcome”.

This year, in all NYC boroughs, you can participate in the following community and character-building activities. There is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March at Harriet Tubman Memorial Triangle. This annual march is organized by the eighth grade students at Manhattan Country School.

The children choose the theme, select the route,

and write speeches about the civil rights issues we face today. The Historic Harlem Walking Tour explores pieces of New York history through the Schomburg Center for Research in

Black Culture. You can visit the Studio Museum in Harlem, which opened in 1968 as the first black fine-arts museum in the country. At the Grand Central Library in Midtown East

staff will play films and songs to celebrate King’s life and legacy. And the amazing Harlem Gospel Choir will perform its annual matinee. For nearly 30 years, the Harlem Gos-

pel Choir has been considered the best choir in the United States; the group was founded in 1986 by Allen Bailey after attending an event honoring Martin Luther King Jr. at the Cotton Club. Now, each year the world-famous singers “share messages of love and inspiration” at Sony Hall.

In his “I Have a Dream…” speech, King stated, “The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright days of justice emerge”. MLK Day is a chance to come together and contemplate the urgency of recognizing equality and pursuing freedom for all. King’s grace and guts continue to give us all hope for the future.

The Voice of Harlem

H

arlem has its own radio station WHCR 90.3 FM or online at www.whcr.org.

Also known as the Voice of Harlem WHCR 90.3 FM has provided educational programming and entertainment to its listeners for over 30 years, created in 1986 to offer radio broadcast training to City College of New York students and members of the community.

The station is licensed

by the FCC as a non-commercial community broadcaster and is one of the few low-power FM stations in New York City. The station serves a diverse population of listeners in Harlem, Upper Manhattan; and some sections of the Bronx, Queens and New Jersey.

In 2009 Angela Harden the General Manager for WHCR, developed a partnership with “The Digital Divide Partnership (www. ddpny.org) a Harlem-based Black-owned technology company that has Federal, New York State and City licensing which allowed DDP to provide the station with broadband services creating a live streaming platform for the station (www.whcr.org) provid-

ing the opportunity for the Voice of Harlem to speak to the world.

I was Director of Urban Affairs at City College when Angela came to my office to share her vision for a digital Harlem radio station that could connect the world; but due to her frustration with the lack of support from the college for her vision she was considering taking a position in the mid-west. I told her I understood her vision and would work with her to get the funding.

The then Manhattan Borough President C Virginia Fields also understood the vision providing a substantial grant that served as the foundation for WHCR 90.3 FM and

whcr.org to become a voice that speaks to diverse populations from around the corner to around the world.

The stations musical shows reflect that diversity providing listeners the option to hear African, Blues, Gospel, Hip Hop, House, Jazz, Merengue, Neo-Soul, classic R&B, Reggae, Rock-n-Roll, and Salsa music. WHCR talk shows cover Community Affairs, Sports, Health, Technology, Business, Mental Health, Financial Advice, along with community-based art and entertainment.

The WHCR Emergency Broadcast Team (WEBT) is a program where, the station provides emergency preparedness, mit-

igation and recovery information and service for the Harlem Community.

The WEBT will provide continuous emergency broadcasting, alternative voice and data systems and two-way emergency radio communication to the area footprint of the Harlem Station.

ietary supplements help people get the nutrients they need to thrive, and 77 percent of Americans take them, according to the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN). However, experts say that in order to make smart choices down the line, it is necessary to understand changes being made to product labels.

“The Food and Drug Administration has mandated that all dietary supplement products feature updated labeling by January 2021 to reflect the evolution of the American diet, as well as advancements in nutrition science,” says Brian Wommack, senior vice president of communications at CRN. “Larger manufacturers will comply by January 2020, and many other manufacturers will be

introducing the new labels early, so it’s smart for everyone to get familiar with the updates now.”

Eighty-two percent of Americans agree that the information on the label helps them make purchasing decisions, and being label wise, according to Wommack, means being committed to reading product labels, having knowledge of what information is featured and why, and making smart, well-informed purchasing decisions.

“While some of the changes to the label are more obvious than others, all of them are important to understand,” says Wommack.

To help you understand the transition, CRN has identified some of the noticeable aspects of the new Supplement Facts label: • New Daily Values (DVs) will reflect the latest nutrition science

and changes in American diets.

• Vitamins A, D, and E will change from amounts in International Units (IU), to the more common measures of milligrams (mg) and micrograms (mcg).

• Folic acid, an important nutrient before and during pregnancy, will be listed as folate and measured in micrograms of dietary folate equivalents (DFEs).

E

verybody has that place.

You know, that place where everyone knows you, they know what you want, and they get it for you before your coat’s half off. It’s where you can catch up on gossip and good news, where you take shelter and get sympathy.

In “Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick” by Zora Neale Hurston, you also get a front seat.

Born in around 1891 in Alabama, Zora Neale Hurston learned early to make her own way: she was just a teenager when her mother died, and when her father married a woman she hated, Hurston left home. After briefly working as a maid

for a traveling actress, she moved to Baltimore where she graduated from high school, shaved a decade off her age, and enrolled at Howard University. There, her first story was printed.

Unable to secure money to graduate from Howard University, Hurston moved to New York in 1924, arriving in Harlem with near-empty pockets but a head full of stories that began winning awards for her. This led to more opportunities, a return to college, a network of other writers, and a publisher for her books.

In this book are twenty-one of Hurston’s short stories, including Harlem Renaissance works that

were previously considered “lost.” Many were written in a way that reflects stereotypical patterns of speech and pronunciation which, says Genevieve West in her introduction, was risky and controversial but Hurston knew exactly what she was doing.

While some tales are set in Harlem, Hurston’s stories here start out in Eatonville, Florida, where everyone knew everyone else. It the place where John Redding lived before he died, floating in the same waters that he dreamed might show him the world. It’s where every man gathers at Jim’s restaurant to talk trash, and where Sam met Stella, who changed him into someone who never gambled and

came home on time, mostly. Eatonville was where Spunk Banks got too brave, where Old Man Morgan could put down a curse on anyone; and where “white folks are very stupid about some things.”

Don’t be surprised if “Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick” is quickly elevated to your local high school’s reading list. Yep, it’s that kind of book.

Read, and you’ll almost wish you were slumped on a wooden chair on Jim’s porch on a hot summer day.

Read, because authenticity oozes from every page here and you can’t help but like the men and women in the tales. Read, as author Zora Neale Hurston’s wit shines

between biting narratory descriptions and comments, like sunbeams sneaking through Jim’s raggedy roof, underscored by a mix of highbrow words and lowlife scoundrels.

You’ll also feel the heat sometimes but it’s not always from the weather.

One thing: modern readers may want to know that the “dialect” that Hurston insisted upon may take some getting used-to, but it ultimately adds to the realism that you’ll love about this book. For that, “Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick” is right for any place.
