Remembering Dr. King and “The Other America”

nce again on the third Monday in January, much of the nation will mark the anniversary of the death of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Countless programs and events will no doubt recall several of his famous speeches from the 1963 March on Washington’s “I Have A Dream to his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” delivered in Memphis during the 1968 sanitation workers’ strike.

In a life of only 39 years, Dr. King captured global attention in his valiant, nonviolent fight for the values of freedom, justice and equality.

Preaching and fighting for long overdue citizenship rights first promised to all in the Declaration of Independence, he championed economic justice – especially for Blacks to have safe, decent, and affordable housing. He also called for full participation in the economy, and an end to financial exploitation.

Now 51 years since his assassination, his words still strike a resonant chord. His words — written as prose but markedly poetic — remain as timely as they are timeless.

“There are so many problems facing our nation and our world, that one could just take off anywhere,” Dr. King said in a speech delivered on April 14, 1967 at Stanford University.

Entitled, “The Other America” Dr. King be4 gan by recapping the na-

tion’s bounty and beauty, noting how “America is overflowing with the milk of prosperity and the honey of opportunity”, and how “millions of young people grow up in the sunlight of opportunity”.

For his audience, those comments almost certainly reflected the lifestyles of the students attending one of the nation’s elite educational institutions.

In his inimitable Baptist cadence, Dr. King then went on to speak of the “Other America” that was equally real but far removed from the commonplace privilege associated with Stanford.

“Little children in this other America are forced to grow up with clouds of inferiority forming every day in their little mental skies. As we look at this other America, we see it as an arena of blasted hopes and shattered dreams,” said Dr. King.

“It’s more difficult today because we are struggling for genuine equality. It’s much easier to integrate a lunch counter than it is to guarantee a livable income and a good solid job. It’s much easier to guarantee the right to vote than it is to guarantee the right to live in sanitary, decent housing conditions.”

In 2019 the two Americas Dr. King wrote about still remain. A nation once lauded for its enviable and expanding middle class has evolved into a nation of people who are either growing wealthy or growing poor.

In this unfortunate process, the nation’s envied middle class is vanishing.

Historically, homeownership has been a reliable measure of the nation’s middle class. Late last year it stood at 64.4 according to the Census Bureau. Yet when race and ethnicity are added who owns a home today discloses a far different picture. White homeownership was higher than the national average at 73.1 percent.

But Blacks still-suffering from the financial losses from the now decade-old foreclosure crisis had a homeownership rate of 41.7 percent, lower than its pre-housing crisis rate of 47.7 percent. Today’s Black homeownership resembles the same levels experienced at the time of the 1968 Fair Housing Act’s passage.

Latino homeownership today is higher than that of Blacks at 46.3 percent; but still lower than its earlier pre-crisis

rate of 47.7.

Housing also remains troubled for renters as well. According to the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, the nation lacks more than 7 million affordable rental homes that affect 43.8 million families.

Moreover, 11 million families pay more than half of their income on housing and are considered severely-cost burdened.

As of January 3, over 1,100 HUD contracts with landlords for its Section 8 rental voucher program expired. By February, another 1,000 more contracts are expected to expire. At press time, the stalemated federal government shutdown continued, leaving millions of people uncertain about their lives, or livelihoods or both. While landlords and HUD figure out the paperwork, 1.2 million families relying on this vital rental support program remain at risk.

san bickering of a federal government shutdown are men and women – the military and civil servants – whose service to the country is deemed so essential that they must continue to work without knowing when another paycheck will arrive. Another 800,000 furloughed federal workers may be at home; but like others affected by the shutdown, they too still need to pay their rent or mortgage, honor their financial obligations and take care of children as best they can.

When times are tough financially, a range of predatory lenders seize opportunities to tempt those who are hardpressed for cash with interest rates on loans that would make a bookie blush. When a loan of only a few hundred dollars comes with interest payments that double or triple the cash borrowed, predatory lenders are ready to exploit those with few or no financial options.

Those who are unpaid or underemployed – those who are working but failing to earn a salary comparable to their education and training, student loan repayments can take a financial backseat to housing, utilities, or other daily living needs.

At press deadline, the federal shutdown was approaching the 1995 shutdown record of 21 days.

In 1967 Dr. King advised his Stanford University audience, “Somewhere we must come to see that social progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals…. And so, we must help time, and we must realize that the time is always right to do right.”

This year, may we all honor Dr. King and do our respective efforts to make America live up to its promise of opportunity for all.

Brooklyn is Home of The First Free Standing Dialysis Treatment Center in NYC

n November 8th, the Rogosin Institute cut the ribbon at its first free-standing home dialysis treatment and education center in NYC, where patients can learn how to treat kidney disease at home.

A leader in kidney disease care and research, The Rogosin Institute is also one of the largest independent, not-for-profit dialysis providers in the country, with nine dialysis centers located in NYC. Affiliated with New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medicine, Rogosin provides health services including prevention and detection of kidney disease and treats more serious problems that require dialy-

sis and transplantation. Rogosin also works to prevent and care for conditions that contribute to kidney disease, such as diabetes and hypertension.

The new location at 527 Court Street (between W 9th & Garnet Streets) is the first free-standing specialized home dialysis training and treatment center in NYC that provides training for all forms of dialysis for both patients and health care providers. It is particularly important to have this treatment and educational center in Brooklyn because the borough has one of the lowest rates of home dialysis in the country, according to an announcement for the new facility—approximately 2% versus the 10% na-

Brooklyn Affordable Housing Initiative of Governor Cuomo is Unveiled

The first group, consisting of RiseBoro Community Partnership, Apex Building Company, L+M Development Partner, and Services for the Underserved (SUS) was selected to purchase and redevelop the former Brooklyn Developmental Center in East New York.

More than 2,400 units will be created, with 45% available to households earning up to 50 percent of 50%. Additionally, 207 units will be available for formerly homeless individuals and families, 185 for intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals, and 156 units for seniors. Services in

the area will include workforce training programs for residents.

CAMBA will develop the Interfaith Broadway Site C, using grounds owned by One Brooklyn Health, to create 57 apartments which include “a Community Facility Annex in a nearby building will provide residents with access to a workforce development training center, Community

Supported Agriculture dropoff point for healthy food, and Neighbors Together meal delivery for elderly residents.”

The third site will be a joint venture between MDG Design + Construction, Smith & Henzy Advisory Group, and the Foundling Group Brookdale Hospital Site B. Again, using land owned by One Brooklyn Health, the developers will

create 152 units with on-site services for the developmentally disabled and individuals aging out of foster care. Services will include “meal planning and nutrition, socialization assistance, and computer use training.”

Finally, at Interfaith Herkimer Site A, the non-profit Federation of Organizations will build 119 affordable homes for seniors, with social

workers, case managers and nurses on site.

In addition to the newly announced winners, a second RFP has been released, looking for developers to create more affordable housing, this time on land owned by the SUNY Downstate Medical Center-affiliated Health Science Center at the Brooklyn Foundation.

These units will help the program reach the goal of 4,000 affordable units through central Brooklyn.

Housing is just one factor of the Governor’s sweeping $1.4 billion Brooklyn initiative. Other aspects of the project focus on health in Central Brooklyn, and just this summer the Governor pledged millions to help local community gardens to provide healthy, local food.

At the beginning of 2018, a $700 million investment in strengthening the area’s healthcare system through development and consolidation was announced as well.

overnor Cuomo has announced the organizations chosen to develop 2,700 units of affordable housing in Central Brooklyn as part of his Vital Brooklyn initiative. The four companies will develop the 100% affordable units in Central Brooklyn for residents making less than 80% of the Area Median Income. Many of the units will be targeted to seniors, and some will provide support services for the developmentally disabled, families struggling with homelessness, and individuals aging out of the foster care system.

“Expanding access to affordable housing is a critical component of the Vital Brooklyn initiative to reverse the chronic social, economic, and health disparities in Central Brooklyn,” Governor Cuomo said. “With the addition of thousands of new homes, we are helping to ensure that our neighbors have high-quality places to live and continuing

s the new Congressional Black Caucus Chair Karen Bass (D-Calif.) was handed a large gavel from outgoing Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La.) it became clear that the new CBC would be making a sizable mark on the next Congress.

The new CBC includes the youngest African American woman to be sworn-in to the U.S. House in history, Lauren Underwood

(D-Ill.), as well as Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the first Muslim female ever elected to Congress. Rep. Tlaib occupies the seat held by long term Congressman John Conyers (D-Mich.) who retired from Congress on December 5, 2017.

The new CBC features nine new members of the U.S. House bringing the group to a total of 55. The 116th Congress will be the first time that the Congres-

sional Black Caucus will ever have over fifty members.

Bass, 65, served as the former Speaker of the California House and was the first-ever African-American woman ever to hold that position.

“Honored to have been sworn in as 26th Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus today.

We will fight fiercely against hate. We will not retreat and allow our past vic-

tories to be erased,” wrote Chairwoman Bass on Twitter, January 3, the first day of the 116th Congress.

“I am proud to witness the ceremonial swearing-in of the largest @ OfficialCBC in history.

With 55 members and @ RepKarenBassserving as their chairwoman, the Congressional Black Caucus is stronger than ever,” wrote Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez.

Changing Times/Adjusting with Caution

t has been a while since I have written for Harlem News. My reasoning was sound. I needed to do an assessment of my own life because I was in the midst of mega changes.

I am not the only one going through significant change.

Our world seems to be in the middle of a wash cycle. Visit your local laundry facility and watch clothes as they tumble and turn.

The person whose clothes are being washed hope the clothes will be cleaned when finished.

Sometimes though the stains will not come out. They are permanent. Other times, those without as much laundering experience learn that mixing certain colors produces a new shade. They will either adapt and enjoy the new color or throw the clothes away.

New chapters in life are like washing cycles. Once cleaned, we want the clothes to look good, feel good and wear well. Our clothes get broken in the more we wash and wear them. We get broken in by life, though, while we live it. Sometimes, our experiences help us look good, feel good and wear well.

Other times, our experiences create a new shade.

Today, I am witnessing amazing shifts. Young people are lifting up those who have become weary. Women and men are speaking

out against violence and abuse. Wounds are being healed, and while scars remain, the bleeding is being stopped.

This shaking does not happen easily.

Generational norms are being challenged. Long-standing assumptions, rules and institutions are being tested, confronted and reshaped. The washing machine is still spinning. Only time will tell what our shape will be when the cycle stops.

We are in the midst of mega changes and I am adjusting with caution.

Each day, though,

is a day for which I am grateful. If you see me and I seem out of sorts, please greet me by asking, “La-Verna, what day is it?” Those who have worked with me know, if you ask me what day it is, I will respond, “Today is my favorite day. Yesterday was amazing, but today…today is my favorite day.” Today is all can focus on in the midst of this shaking. Today, I am here. Today, I am alive. Today, I still have the opportunity to embrace me.

Make Better Brain Health Your Top New Year’s Resolution for 2019 (Statepoint)

lzheimer’s Disease is expected to impact nearly 14 million Americans by 2050, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

So, as you set your New Year’s resolutions for 2019, consider the following ways to maintain and improve your cognitive function.

Research has shown lifestyle changes like improving diet and exercising regularly have helped drive down death rates from cancer, heart disease and other major diseases. These same lifestyle changes may also reduce or slow your risk of cognitive decline, which is often a precursor to Alzheimer’s and

other dementias.

Discovering risk factors and preventive strategies for cognitive decline that can cause problems with memory, language, thinking and judgment is a hot topic in Alzheimer’s research, as are multi-faceted lifestyle interventions to slow or prevent dementia. The good news? Many such interventions are things you might already be doing or thinking about doing in the new year, such as eating well, staying physically active and getting good sleep, just to name a few.

“There is increasing evidence to suggest that what is good for the heart is good for our brains,” says Keith Fargo, Ph.D., director of scientific pro-

grams and outreach at the Alzheimer’s Association. “Keeping our brains healthy is not something we should worry about only as we get older. It should be a lifelong effort.”

One easy way to encourage brain health at any age is to stimulate your mind with problem-solving challeng-

es. Working on a jigsaw puzzle, learning a new language and playing strategy games are a few ways to strengthen your memory -- as long as they are new and challenging tasks. Research has also found correlations between higher levels of formal education and a better cognitive reserve -- so sign up for a class

in 2019!

Another way to promote brain health is taking care of your mental health. Managing stress and anxiety is not only important for overall health and wellbeing, but studies have found a link between depression and increased risk of cognitive decline. Take care of yourself and seek medical treatment if you have symptoms.

Being social may also support brain health.

That’s right. Add “hang out with friends” and “have fun” to your New Year’s resolutions list.

Better yet, take on several of these lifestyle changes for maximum impact. For example, enroll in a dance class with a friend.

Alzheimer’s researchers are now looking into whether a “cocktail” of these interventions can protect cognitive function. The Alzheimer’s Association’s U.S. Study to Protect Brain Health Through Lifestyle Intervention to Reduce Risk (U.S. POINTER) is a two-year clinical trial that hopes to answer this question, and is the first such study to be conducted of a large group of Americans nationwide.

While there’s currently no certain way to prevent Alzheimer’s and other dementias, there is much to be gained by living a healthy lifestyle and adopting brain health habits that you enjoy, so that you stick with them for the long haul.

H

ands on the wheel.

Hands on the hood, in the air, on the wall, on the ground. No sudden moves, no waving “hey” or scratching your nose, and don’t reach for a thing. Hands up – although, as you’ll read in “A Bound Woman is a Dangerous Thing” by DaMaris B. Hill, there are times when that doesn’t matter.

The fact is shocking: according to The Sentencing Project, the rate of incarceration for Black women rose 700% between 1980 and 2014. For Hill, that devastating number spurred her to a different kind of action: she wrote poetry to honor those incarcerated women, and the women before them.

They are, she says, “love letters” gathered in six groups in her book, beginning with a photo of her fierce grandmother. Hill admits that Harriet Beecher Spruill-Hill was never incarcerated in the physical sense; instead, she was the victim of “Jane Crow styles of oppression…”

The photo kicks off the first segment, which honors ancestors.

Based on a book by history professor Kali Nicole Gross, the second section of Hill’s book deals with historical African American women, in poems that “attempt to create first-person testimonies…” They were women who weren’t necessarily incarcerated, but were instead directly,

of modern sarcasm. Most are loaded with symbolism and metaphor, made to make you think. For lovers of poetry, that mix here will be welcome and powerful but for readers expecting something else, the presentation could be a head-scratcher.

often instantly punished for crimes committed.

Hill’s third portion focuses on writers such as Ida B. Wells and Zora Neale Hurston, and women like Eartha Kitt and Sonia Sanchez, who used their talents and networks for political activism. Her fourth segment “focuses on what it means to hurdle; to spring forth” beyond the bonds that held this chapters’ subjects back. The fifth section is devoted to Assata Shakur, a woman Hill calls “a second Harriet Tubman…”

Hill’s final chapter is devoted to connections and how there is an arc between “bound” women and their families and children today. In this chapter, Hill includes “an autobiographical journey,” as the mother of a Black man, and her heartache over his addictions.

Looking much like a historical narrative, the front cover of “A Bound Woman is a Dangerous Thing” is very misleading.

Readers will want to know that this is not strictly a history book. Yes, there’s history inside it – brief, fascinating history; biographical clips; and wonderful period photos – but that’s not the focus.

Instead, author DaMaris B. Hill offers too-short introductions to various Black women throughout history before presenting poems she wrote, based on each individual woman’s situation. Names may be familiar, while others are not, and the poems vary: a few are wry, almost biting, with just the barest touch
