I saw the play last week and I agree. (see page 10) In this issue we feature "Blacks Off Broadway." Next week we will feature "Blacks On Broadway."

The reason we catalog these shows is in hopes that it will make it easier for you our reader to choose to see these productions and support our Black actors. We started this feature 20 years ago when there were just 30 Black actors on Broadway. Today there are more than 300 working "on" and "Off" Broadway today. In 1920 Charles

Black History Month Celebrations in New York

B

lack History Month also called African-American History Month kicked off this February 1st, bringing light and inspiration to a chilly, dreary month. Each February, New York City and the world focuses its attention on this significant annual observance with numerous events.

In 1926 historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February as “Negro History Week,” chosen because it coincided with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The reasons for the birth of the week were recognition and importance. Out of this grew black history clubs, an interest among the teaching community, and an interest from progressive whites. The week continued to grow in popularity until a month was proposed by black educators and the Black United Students

at Kent State University in February 1969. The first monthly celebration took place at Kent State at the beginning of the year 1970.

Six years later Black History Month was being celebrated nationwide in educational institutions and Black culture and community centers. This grabbed the attention of President Gerald Ford who recognized Black History Month during the celebration of the United States Bicentennial. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history”. Black History Month then spread around the world beginning with a celebration in London in 1987, organized through the leadership of Ghanaian analyst Akyaaba Addai-Sebo. The month was declared in 1995 in Canada and in 2010 in Ireland.

Harlem’s Apollo Theater launches February with two free events, a Celebration of Cool and a child-friendly afternoon of entertainment. The theater also features the Apollo Comedy Club (Feb. 6), the Apollo Music Café (Feb. 7 and 8), a concert by Dadju (Feb. 16), Amateur Night (Feb. 19), and a screening of the original Shaft, with Burnt Sugar

The Harlem-based Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture has a full month of programmed events. The Queens Theater presents The African Company Presents:

There are also dynamic tours: Harlem Heritage Tour, Harlem Spirituals Tours, Hush Hip Hop Tours, and UN Black History Tours, exploring the history of jazz, hip-hop, gospel, art, soul food, and as well as memorials and the legacy and culture of the areas.

Blacks Are Working Off Broadway in 2020!

ff-Broadway is a very viable venue for African American actors. There are numerous productions that are utilizing the talents of Black performers. Some shows have opened already and many are coming in 2020.

Off-Broadway is putting Blacks to work in a wonderful way through plays from Black writers like Katori Hall, Lynn Nottage, Donald E. Lacy, Jr., C.A. Johnson, Pearl Cleage, Jillian Walker and through the work of other writers as well.

Productions are happening throughout Manhattan as well as, in Brooklyn.

Looking at the shows alphabetically I’d like to share the productions and the Black actors who are on stage to perform or will be coming in future months.

Let me just say that the shows included here are productions that have cast their actors and had headshots available, which allowed them to be included in this piece. “a photograph: lovers in motion” by Nzotake Shange, a Negro Ensemble Company production, adapted and directed by Ifa

Bayeza will play at Theater 80 at St. Marks. Set in San Francisco during the waning years of the Black Arts Movement, the play explores the world of creative artists as they fought to communicate, create their own image, life and love. Cast members feature Nya Bowman as Nevada: Imana Breaux as Michael; Marc Deliz as Earl; Mystie Galloway as Claire and Adrain Washington as Sean David. The production will run Feb. 2-29.

“All The Natalie Portmans” by Black playwright C.A. Johnson, directed by Kate Whoriskey, will play at the Susan & Ronald Frankel Theater at the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space at 511 W 52nd St. It is a coming of age comedy. Keyonna and her brother Samuel are on the brink of eviction and dream of a better life. Keyonna escapes to the world of her book muse Natalie Portman and learns a valuable lesson about life. The production will feature Joshua Boone as Samuel; Montego Glover as Ovetta; Renika Williams as Chantel and Kara Young as Keyonna. The show will run through March 15.

“Between The Lines” will play at the Tony Kiser

Theater at Second Stage, located at 305 W 43 St. A musical based on a book

by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer has a book by Timothy Allen McDonald, music and lyrics by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson, with direction by Jeff Calhoun. Presented by Daryl Roth, it tells the story of a girl in a new town and school who finds comfort in the pages of her favorite book. She wonders if she can rewrite her own story.

The musical will have Jerusha Cavazos as Janice/Marina and Morgan Siobhan Green as Jules/Ondine. The musical will begin performances on April 21 with an official opening on May 7.

“Blue” by Charles Randolph-Wright with music by Nona Hendryx and lyrics by Charles Randolph-Wright and Nona Hendryx and direction by Phylicia Rashad will play at the Apollo Theatre at 253 W 125th St. The production celebrates the love and spirit of a family coming to terms with itself. Here the family is the Clarks, a socially prominent family dealing with legacy and pitfalls. It will feature legendary actress in the lead roles—Leslie Uggams as Tillie Clark and Lynn

Whitfield as Peggy Clark.

The production is currently casting the other roles.

The show will begin performances on April 27 and run through Aug. 16, with an official opening on May 10.

“Blues for an Alabama Sky” by Pearl Cleage and directed by L.A. Williams, tells the story of four friends in Harlem and a newcomer from Alabama who collide in 1930 during the Harlem Renaissance. It will feature Alfie Fuller as Angel; John-Andrew Morrison as Guy; Khiry Walker as Leland; and Sheldon Woodley as Doc. The production will play at Theater

Row, located at 410 W 42nd Street between 9th and 10th Avenues. The play will run through March 14, opening on Feb. 18.

“Chicken and Biscuits” written by Douglas Lyons, will play at the Queens Theatre at 14 United Nations Avenue South, Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

Directed by Zhailon Levingston, it tells the story of Baneatta and Beverly, sister who attempt to put their differences aside to bury their father. At the funeral however they find out a secret that puts everyone in an uproar. This new comedy has heart, soul and a little shade. The cast members feature Alana Raquel Bowers as Simone; Jennifer Fouche as Baneatta; Ashanti J’Aria as Brianna; Ebony Marshall-Oliver as Beverly; Robert G. McKay as Reginald; Aigner Mizzelle as La’Trice; and Josh Adams Ramos as Kenny. The show will play Feb. 28 to Mar. 22.

“Coal Country,” written by Jessica Blank and Eric Jensen with original music by Steve Earle and direction by Jessica Blank,

tells the story of the 2010 Upper Big Branch mine explosion based on survivors’ accounts and family members. The play will be performed at Anspacher Theater at the Public Theater at 425 Lafayette Street.

It will feature Ezra Knight as Roosevelt. The play will run Feb. 18-Mar. 29, officially opening Mar. 3.

“Colorstruck,” written

by Donald E. Lacy, Jr. will play at Theater for the New City at 155 First Avenue. It is a comedic autobiography on an outsider: a sensitive, light-skinned Black man in Oakland during the height of the Black Power Movement. It is a one-man show featuring Donald E. Lacy, Jr. The production will play Feb. 27 to Mar.15.

“Dracula” with a new adaptation by Kate Hamill and direction by Sarna Lapine will be presented by the Classic Stage Company at Lynn F. Angelson Theater at Classic Stage Company, located at 136 E 13th St. It will feature Jessica Frances Dukes as Doctor Van Helsing. It will play Feb. 17 to Mar. 8.

“Mirrors” written by Azure D. Osbourne-Lee will play at Next Door at New York Theatre Workshop, located at 79 E 4th St. It is set in Mississippi in 1960 and depicts the lives of three Black women bound by love and loss and family and the secrets of their shared past. It is a depiction of Black queer women in the South. The play features Joyia Bradley as Louise Sterling; Suzanne Darrell as Bird Wilson; Anthony Goss as Ray Johnson; AnJu Hyppolite as Mabel Mosley; Natalie Jacobs as Constance Jenkins; Ashley Noel Jones as Alma Jean Pierson; and Kayland Jordan as Annabelle “Belle” Pierson.

“Sistas: The Musical” written by Dorothy Marcic, with direction by Kenneth Ferrone, is playing at St. Lukes Theatre at 308 W 46th St. It has been playing there for many years and is the story of African-American women told through top-40 music from Bessie Smith to Beyonce. The musical has choreography by

Lauren Lim-Jackson and it is simply a great, fun time.

It features Allyson Kaye Daniel as Roberta/Dance Captain; Kenya Hamilton as Swing; Kendra Lynn Lucas as Simone, Rachel Sarah Mount as Tamika and Marlaina Powell as Gloria.

This show is playing an open-ended run.

“SKinFoLK: An American Show,” by Jillian Walker, directed by Mei Ann Teo will play at the Bushwich Starr Theater at 207 Starr Street in Brooklyn. It is produced in association with the National Black Theater and the Bushwich Starr and presented in association with Musical Theatre Factory. It will be a concert/ play that explores the question and limits of Blackness, performance and country.

The production will feature Tsebiyah Mishael Derry as Avery NoLastName; Lori Sinclair Minor as Smiling Tuxedoed Man/Nixon and Jillian Walker as Me. The production will play Feb. 29 to Mar. 22.

“STEW” by Zora Howard, directed by Collette Robert, will be presented

by Page 73 Productions at Walkerspace Theatre at 46 Walker Street. It will deal with family issues coming to a boil hen three generations are in Mama’s kitchen. The play feature Kristin Dodson as Lil’ Mama; Toni Lachelle Pollitt as Nelly; Portia as Mama; and Nikkole Salter as Lillian.

“The Hot Wing King”

by Katori Hall, with direction by Steve H. Broadnax III will be performed in The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at the Pershing Square Center at 480 W 42nd St, between 9th and 10th Avenues. It tells the story of Cordell Crutchfield who lives in Memphis, Tennessee, and is competing

in the annual ‘Hot Wang Festival.’ This production is a comedy that deals with competition, relationships, and family dynamics. Especially when Cordell’s troubled nephew comes to stay. The production will feature Nicco Annan as Big Charles; Sheldon Best as Isom; Cecil Blutcher as EJ; Korey Jackson as Dwayne; Toussaint Jeanlouis as Cordell and Eric Robinson Jr. as TJ. The production will run Feb. 11 to Mar. 22, with an official opening on Mar. 1.

“The Play That Goes Wrong” written by Henry Lewis, Henry Shields and Jonathan Sayer, has direction by Mark Bell. It is play at New World Stages at 340 W 50th St. Presented by Mischief Theatre Company, it is one of the funniest shows you will see about what mishaps can happen while performing a whodunit. It features Jason Bowen as Trevor and Bianca Horn as Annie. The show has an open-ended run.

“The Unsinkable Molly Brown” has music and lyrics by Meredith Willson and a new book based on the original book by Richard Morris and new lyrics by Dick Scanlan. The production is directed and

choreographed by Kathleen Marshall. The musical comedy is about Molly Brown, an underdog turned champion of women’s rights.

This Transport Group production will play at the Abrams Arts Center located at 466 Grand St. It will star David Aron Damane as JJ and have Tyrone Davis Jr. and CoCo Smith as ensemble members. The musical will run Feb. 8 to Mar. 22, official opening on Feb. 26.

“Two Can Play” by Trevor Rhone, directed by Clinton Turner Davis will play at the Castillo Theatre at 543 W 42nd Street. It will be presented by New Federal Theatre in association with Castillo Theatre and will tell the story of a marriage tested as a Jamaican couple risk everything to emigrate to the U.S. The two person play will star Michael Rogers as Jim and Joyce Sylvester as Gloria. The play will run Feb. 27 to Mar. 29.

“We’re Gonna Die” by Young Jean Lee, directed and choreographed by Raja Feather Kelly will play at Second Stage’s Tony Kiser Theater at 305 W 43rd St. It’s a play that celebrates what we do in life to get through the hurdles using a series of stories and songs.

This one-woman show stars Janelle McDermoth. The play will run Feb. 4 to Mar. 22, with an official opening on Feb. 25.

“Where We Stand” by Donnetta Lavinia Grays is a one-person show that she also performs, alternating with David Ryan Smith. Having its world premiere at the WP Theater and being presented by the WP Theater and Baltimore Center Stage, the play tells an interesting story. In a town running low on compassion, an exile seeks forgiveness, forcing the community to decide between mercy or justice. This epic fable of penance is filled with humor, heart and music. It is directed by Tamilia Woodard and playing at WP Theatre at 2162 Broadway and 76th Street. It will play through March 1.

The Off-Broadway season for 2020 will be very exciting. There are so many productions that offer all types of storylines for one to enjoy. There are musicals, dramatic plays, comedic plays, one-woman shows, one-man shows, there is a variety for many theatrical appetites. Go out and support our Black artists on those stages.

“Esai’s Table” written

by Nathan Yungerberg with direction by Stevie Walker-Webb, will play at the Cherry Lane Theatre located at 38 Commerce Street.

The play is a mythical tale about a magical table, three young Black men, friendship, family, love and being human. The cast consists of Dimitri Carter as Adam Iverson; Curtiss Cook Jr. as Michael Ferguson; Marcus Gladney Jr. as David Tyler Jones and Benton Greene as Esai Wallace. The show will play Mar. 19 to Apr. 25.

“First By Faith: The Life of Mary McLeod Bethune, written and performed

by Richarda Abrams, this one-woman show will play as part of the Women’s History Solo Show Series at the 14th Street Y, located at 344 E 14th St. The play, directed by Dina Vovsi, will focus on Mary McLeod Bethune and Abrams wholeheartedly sharing this great lady’s life story and legacy.

“Frankenstein” adapted

by Tristan Bernay and directed by John Douglas will play at the Lynn A. Angelson Theater at Classic Stage Company, at 136 E 13th St. It will feature Stephanie Berry as Frankenstein/The Creature. It will run Feb. 25 to Mar. 15.

“Intimate Apparel”, a world premiere opera with a libretto by Black playwright Lynn Nottage, music

by Ricky Ian Gordon and direction by Bartlett Sher, will play at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center, located at 150 W 65th St. It is a co-venture between the Met/LCT New Works Program. A Day for Global Healing

or over twenty years on the last Saturday of April starting at 10.00 AM, holistic wellness practitioners, organizations and businesses in hundreds of cities in over 80 nations come together to provide group teachins, group meditations along with the marketing of mind, body, spirit holistic wellness programs and services.

In 1998 The Kansas City Tai Chi Club held a mass Tai Chi exhibition and teach-in on the lawn of an Art Museum in midtown Kansas City where over 100 people participated.

The next year 1999 World Tai Chi Day became an international event with Tai Chi and Qigong practitioners in cities throughout the world using the last Saturday in April to coordinate programs to introduce holistic energy wellness options to the public.

Over the years other mind, body, soul wellness groups and organizations also started using the last Saturday in April to coordinate wellness informational and educational events creating a World Healing and a World Tai Chi Day on

the last Saturday in April.

In 2007 Dr. Robert Woodbine a Qigong and Tai Chi master asked me to help him coordinate the first Harlem Tai Chi Day in St. Nicholas Park. In 2008 other wellness practitioners joined in.

In 2012 on the last Saturday in April a Holistic Wellness Expo was also held at the City College of New York in the Great Hall creating the first Harlem Holistic Wellness Day. In 2013 the City College Great Hall was not available until the first Saturday in May creating the foundation for Harlem Holistic Wellness Week, (also known as H2W) which starts on the last Saturday in April and ends on the first Saturday in May. This

year the H2W dates are Saturday April 25th to Saturday May 2nd, 2020.

Plans are underway to have a two-day wellness expo again at The City College of New York on Saturday April 25th (World Healing Day) and on Sunday April 26th. Another exciting thing about this year’s Harlem Tai Chi/Qigong Day is that Dr. Robert Woodbine has returned from three years of intensive training at Dr. Yang, Jwing – Ming’s TaijiquanQigong mountain training retreat in Northern California.

Grand Master Yang is a decedent of the family that created the Yang Taijiquan system one of the best-known Tai Chi training systems in the world.

I am sure Dr. Woodbine’s demonstration and talk on April 25th about his experience of training in the mountains for three years with one of the most famous Taijiquan Grand Masters in the world, will be very interesting.

I would like to thank the members of the H2W 2020 planning committee for coordinating a H2W planning and information meeting on Monday January 27th at Touro College, a large number of holistic wellness practitioners and businesses attended and were the first to receive deals for participating in H2W 2020.

World Tai Chi and Heal-

ing Day 2020 (as it has for the past seven years) will be the kick off for Harlem Holistic Wellness Week, which brings seven days of workshops, teach-ins, along with holistic health and wellness programs to different venues in the Greater Harlem area Community Boards 9, 10, 11 and 12.

Sometimes, a craving hits and that kind of food saves the day; in the new book “Franchise” by Marcia Chatelain, that kind of food once changed neighborhoods.

What did you have for lunch today?

If you’re like a third of your fellow Americans, you ate lunch or some other meal at a fast-food restaurant. It wasn’t always so: a century ago, cooked ground beef was

a food for the lower- and working-classes, not for the masses. Eventually, though, the taste of a burger and fries won over just about everyone – and then came McDonald’s which, says Chatelain, “has affected the ways Americans eat, play, and work.” The restaurant also affected the Civil Rights movement – and vice versa.

In 1961, after Ray Kroc assumed control of the chain he created, he began flying around the country in search of places to further expand his McDonald’s restaurants. There were already two in the Chicago area and they were profitable. Though both stores were then owned

by white men, one store was run by a Black manager; that was fine with Kroc, as long as the place was profitable.

The idea of a restaurant that served everyone, regardless of race,intrigued African American southerners who were living under Jim Crow laws.

When McDonald’s moved to their areas, segregation was in effect but the Civil Rights movement was coming, along with protests and sit-ins. Kroc tended not to get involved, preferring that franchiseesdeal with situations on their own.

By spring of 1968, that was no longer tenable.

White-owned restaurants were an “irritation” in Black neighborhoods and after Dr. King was assas-

sinated, resentment boiled over. Kroc decided that it was best to find black franchisees to assume ownership of suchrestaurants in those areas. So by the end of that year, Herman Petty of Chicago proudly opened the first Black-owned McDonald’s location…

With a sub-title of “The Golden Arches in Black America” on the cover of this book, one might think that it would include something about nutrition.

It does – but not much, and not until the end. Instead, author Marcia Chatelain uses “Franchise” to focus mostly on a history of the chain itself and its business relationship with the Black community.

It’s a sixty-year account that’s tasty, but

there’s not always a happy story to go along with the Happy Meal, which Chatelain explains, starting at mid-century. It’s a tale of unknowns who are usually unsung, and some that are total surprises; Chatelain also examines ofttold Civil Rights stories as they relate to the McDonald’s chain, showing history from a different spot at the table.

This is not your runof-the-mill business book, nor is it an everyday history read. It’s actually a little of both, and worth a look. If you’re seeking something to learn and enjoy, “Franchise” has it in the bag.
