This Thanksgiving I felt like a stuff turkey - as usual.

Getting a meal is one thing most do not have to worry about during this holiday season. There were many free turkeys and trimmings given out and many churches, restaurants and organizations were offering free meals. Jacobs Restaurant has been serving free meals at their two locations on Thanksgiving Day for almost a decade. They serve the traditional Turkey and trimmings, however, they also offer many of the dishes they serve during a regular day.

Racially Discriminatory Legislation and Policies Must Be Stopped The Unintended Consequences of a Menthol Cigarette Ban to Black America From pro-slavery laws to Jim Crow, to Prohibition, to racial profiling, to Stop-and-Frisk, history is clear: racist laws and discriminatory bans have been devastating for Black America.

Today, Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP) and National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) have joined together with other African-American law enforcement executives to call on you - our readers in Black communities across the nation - to see the warning signs of yet another proposed racially discriminatory law: the menthol cigarette ban.

It is a well-known fact that over 85 percent of African Americans who smoke prefer menthol cigarettes. There is no factual basis to assert that a menthol cigarette ban will stop African Americans from smoking. In fact, the unintended consequences of such a raciallydiscriminatory ban will set the stage for more negative and more likely counterproductive interactions between law enforcement and African Americans.

While proponents argue that a menthol cigarette ban could encourage menthol cigarette smokers to quit smoking cold-turkey, another possible outcome could be extremely dangerous—the creation of an illicit market. If this happens, illegal sales of menthol cigarettes will likely be concentrated in communities of color, leading to a greater police presence, citations, fines, and arrests for selling a product that for the past 50 years has been legal.

Possible bans on menthol cigarettes are now being considered throughout the United States as add-ons to e-cigarette bans. It must be said that while FDA has deemed teen vaping an “epidemic,” there is no teen menthol cigarette epidemic. The fact is teen cigarette use has steadily been on the decline over the past decade.

Recently in New York, the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner courageously issued a public statement warning against the consequences of a proposed menthol cigarette ban. Sybrina Fulton and Gwendolyn Carr stated, “When you ban a product sold mostly in Black communities, you must consider the reality of what will happen to that very same over-represented community in the criminal justice system.”

Law enforcement leaders like Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), Grand Council of Guardians, and National Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers (NABLEO) have stated countless times that a ban on menthol cigarettes will have unintended negative consequences, especially for African Americans.

Over the past 30 years, we have reduced tobacco consumption overall across this country by about 40 percent. And we did not do that with the criminal justice community. We did that with education, we did it with treatment, we did it from a health and educational perspective. Let’s continue with that. Let’s not do something that’s going to end up with these unintended consequences of increasing interaction between police and community members.

That’s what cops do, and we trust that those laws are well thought out, studied and based upon sound data and evidence. As we begin to mirror the days of alcohol prohibition with tobacco bans, expect the violence and corruption that comes with the illicit market and add something else, the over criminalization of the black community.”

Jiles Ship, President of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives – New Jersey (NOBLE): “Banning menthol cigarettes would be a 21st Century attempt at Prohibition, a past failure of government to restrict a previously legal product. As we learned with Prohibition, every time the government tries to ban something, it seems to cause other problems. And unfortunately, a menthol cigarette ban would be another example of government action that disproportionately disrupts the Black community.”

Charles Billips, National Chair Person of Grand Council of Guardians, “The first question I asked is how are they going to implement this ban on menthol cigarettes, knowing that a large number of Black and Brown people smoke menthol cigarettes? It would be best to educate the communities on the affect it has on our health instead of a ban enforced through Law Enforcement.”

As The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once prophetically said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” And the right thing to do for our families and communities and for all who stand for freedom, justice and equality is to speak out against all forms of racial discrimination and disproportionate law enforcement, as well as the systems, laws, bans and policies that perpetuate them.

ate last month, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and the Brooklyn Borough Hall team participated in several charitable giveaways in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

These activities are part of a tradition at Brooklyn Borough Hall, which continues to emphasize and promote service to the community, especially during the holiday season.

“There is a reason we call the day ‘Thanksgiving,’ as opposed to ‘Thanks Receiving,’’ said Borough President Adams. “We recognize this holiday each year in the shared spirit of generosity, especially toward those who may not have the privilege of gathering around a table with friends and family.”

The Borough President and his team at Brooklyn Borough Hall is proud to do their part, performing charita-

ble acts to help fellow Brooklynites in need.

“Our goal of fostering the strength of One Brooklyn finds its fullest expression in holidays like this one, and we want everyone to know the essential comforts of a good meal, a roof over their heads, and the company of loved ones,” said BP Adams.

Back in November, Brooklyn Borough Hall hosted a “Plantsgiving” giveaway, co-sponsored

by Target. Volunteers helped distribute more than 2,405 pounds of Thanksgiving trimmings, including apples, black beans, carrots, green beans, onions, and potatoes to local nonprofits and religious institutions. The event highlighted the widespread need for healthy, nourishing meals during the holiday season for those who need it most.

On Wednesday, November 27th, Borough President Adams and the

Brooklyn Borough Hall team volunteered at the Campaign Against Hunger (CAHNYC), a Bedford-Stuyvesant-based non-profit that distributes well-balanced meals to approximately 30,000 food-insecure residents each month, in addition to its annual outreach for Thanksgiving.

The two Thanksgiving distribution events, highlighted Borough President Adams’ commitment to leading the way in alleviating the national health crisis, by sharing the broad benefits of embracing a healthy, plant-based lifestyle.

“Organizations like Campaign Against Hunger and so many others across the borough go to great lengths to ensure no one goes without food during the holiday, and their efforts often go unrecognized. We wanted to make sure we were drawing more attention to the good work they do, whether it’s during this time of year or yearround,” Borough President Adams added.

OP-ED: What I’m thankful for this season

e celebrated Thanksgiving last week. Pass the turkey, slow down on the stuffing, put the kids, nieces and nephews at another table so the adults can talk, leave room for the pumpkin pie and leave even more room for, as the word suggests, giving thanks.

So that’s what I want to do here. I want to give thanks for a human right that shaped our country throughout the 20th century and that made Thanksgiving possible for so many Americans who, like me, didn’t get here by way of the Mayflower. A human right that gives millions the time, the security, the good health and the ability to share this holiday with the people they love. Make that a globally recognized fundamental human right, and one written into our constitution that is known as Collective Bargaining.

I know. Collective Bar-

gaining doesn’t sound festive.

But believe me, Collective Bargaining is responsible for a whole lot of the festivities that we enjoy this holiday. Trade unions and the collective voice that they speak to management with, have brought about so much of what we now take for granted. The 40-hour work week, for example, was almost 70 hours until unions rolled their sleeves up and said life also calls for family and R and R time.

Likewise, organized labor, not management, introduced the idea of weekends, paid vacation, sick days and paid holidays such as aforementioned Turkey Day. Union bargainers negotiate what wages will be set at, how safe a workplace environment must be, the healthcare provided you, the retirement you can look forward to. Oh, and the children at the kid’s table? Unions pushed for the child labor laws that put them in chairs asking for second helpings instead of on a bench sewing shoes for countless hours a day.

What’s more, unions and those they bargain for are as diverse as America is. Because of Collective Bargaining, auntie’s mashed potatoes get passed down a long table.

According to a recent report from the Economic Policy

Institute, an independent, nonprofit think tank that researches the impact of economic trends and policies on working people in the United States, roughly 10.6 million of the 16.3 million workers covered by a union contract are women and/or people of color: • About two-thirds (65.4 %) of workers age 18 to 64 and covered by a union contract are women and/or people of color.

• Almost half (46.3 %) are women.

• More than a third (35.8 %) are black, Hispanic, Asian, or other non-white workers.

• Black workers are the most likely to be represented by unions: 14.5 % of black workers age 18 to 64 are covered by a collective bargaining agreement, compared with 12.5 % of white workers and 10.1 % of Hispanic workers.

Union workers are increasingly better educated.

More than half (54.5 %) of workers age 18 to 64 and covered by a union contract have an associate degree or more education.

• Two out of five (42.4 %) have a bachelor’s degree or more education.

I am proud to say, at my Thanksgiving table the col-

lective bargainers I am personally most thankful for are my brothers and sisters at the UAW. As I write this during this bargaining season, we have ratified contract agreements with General Dynamics and Ford Motor Company, and took to the streets to get new contracts with Mack Truck and General Motors — sometimes justice and better working conditions means a picket line. I was so proud of my union family who stood strong on that line and showed Mack Truck and GM, once again, the power of our solidarity. We saw a historic outpouring of public support as well for the sacrifices our brothers and sisters made on those picket lines in the cold, rain and heat. Our negotiated contracts protected wages, health care and retirement benefits and job security.

Our institution is steeped in the history of how America’s middle class was fought for and forged with roots going back to the Great Depression.

So, this is the perfect season to be thankful for unions across the land, for my UAW, and for the right of Collective Bargaining. Ours is a land of plenty — Unions work for all to share in its bounty.

47th Annual AUDELCO: Black Theatre’s Reunion and Awards!

“The Secret Life of Bees,” from the Atlantic Theater Company followed with four VIV Awards for best musical; LaChanze tied for lead actress in a musical; outstanding musical director-- Jason Hart; and featured actress in a musical— Eisa Davis. The Nuyorican Poet Café’s production of “The Haunting of Lin Manuel Miranda” received three VIV Awards for featured actress in a play—Roz Fox; featured actor in a play— Robert Turner; and costume design—Carolyn Adams.

There was such a rich offering of substantial productions this season and many walked out with a VIV. They included “Native Son” from the Acting Company which tied for best play. Black Spectrum Theatre’s “Reunion in Bartersville” won best revival of a play. “Caroline, or Change”

from the Astoria Performing Arts Center won best revival of a musical. Jessica Frances Dukes won lead actress in a play for her portrayal of Vera Stark in the Signature Theatre Company production of “By The Way, Meet Vera Stark”. Keith Randolph Smith received the VIV for lead actor in a play for the Rattlestick Company production of “Lockdown.” The VIV for solo performance went to Richarda Abrams for her performance in “First by Faith: The Life of Mary McLeod Bethune.” David Wright won the VIV for sound design for his work on “The Savage Queen.”

Justin Ellington tied with Wright also receiving the VIV in sound design for his work on “Fireflies.”

In addition to the Awards for the amazing theater that graced the stage this season, were the special awards presented. Grace Jones Lifetime Achievement Awards were given to Woodie King Jr., founder of New Federal Theatre, a writer, director and producer and Barbara Montgomery, actor, writer,

and director. Board of Director Awards were given to the late playwright and poet, Ntozake Shange and sound designer, playwright, composer, radio drama producer/director, actor—David D. Wright. To celebrate the power of Shange, original actresses from productions of “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf” performed from the piece. Sarita Allen, Carol Maillard, Ruthana Grave McQueen, Elizabeth Van Dyke and Robbie McCauley thrilled the audience.

Special Pioneer Awards were bestowed upon lead Black Broadway Producers and founders of Front Row Productions, Stephen C. Byrd and Alia Jones-Harvey. They have produced Broadway productions that feature Black cast and

mixed race cast including, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “A Trip to Bountiful,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Eclipsed,” “The Iceman Cometh,” “American Son,” “Paramour,” and currently “Ain’t Too Proud.”

An Outstanding Achie­ ve­ ment Award was given to director Kenny Leon.

Leon has directed numerous Broadway productions including “American Son,” “Children of a Lesser God,” “A Raisin in the Sun,” “The Mountaintop,” “Stickfly,” “Gem of the Ocean,” “Radio Golf,” and “Fences.”

Composer/lyricist/playwright/librettist/actress/ director Mick Grant was given the Legacy Award.

Grant has been part of 18 productions, including her musical “Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope,” “Your

Arms Too Short To Box With God,” “Working,” and “Eubie[JA1] .” She is also a Grammy, Drama Desk and Outer Critic Circle Award winner. Melba Moore performed a song in a tribute to her friend. This year’s Rising Star was Raif-Henok, an actor and dancer and son of Rhonda Ross and Rodney Kendrick. He was given the award by last year’s winner—Chinua Baraka Payne.

lack theatre excellence was front and center at the 47th Annual Vivian Robinson AUDELCO Awards, held on November 18 at Tribeca Performing Arts Center at 199 Chambers Street. This year the theme was “The Legacy Continues…” and that it did. It was an evening that placed a spotlight on all that is exceptional and loved in Black theatre from the storyline, to the actors, directors and technical staff.

Black theatre is a rich tapestry and one that needs to be recognized, appreciated and rewarded, and rewarded it was.

The AUDELCO Awards were hosted by Jerome Preston Bates and Rhonda Ross and it was a glorious event.

Finding its way to the top of the heap was New Federal Theatre’s “Looking For Leroy”, which received six VIV Awards, tying for best play; outstanding ensemble performance; playwright— Larry Muhammad; director of a play—Petronia Paley; set design—Chris Cumberbatch and lighting design— Antoinette Tynes. The Public Theatre’s production at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park of “Much Ado About Nothing,” earned five VIV Awards for director of a musical—Kenny Leon; lead actor in a musical—Grantham Coleman; lead actress in a musical—

The Christmas Card Printmakers

he story of the first “real” Christmas card is one worth telling.

It was the idea of England’s Sir Henry Cole but the artists who made his idea a popular reality were John Callcott Horsley and Louis Prang. First Cole, an aristocrat, contracted his artist friend John Callcott to bring his idea to life. The artist designed a triptych with the center illustration showing a family dinner flanked on both sides by people helping the poor. Underneath the family table illustration is a cloth draped with the words “A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to You”. That greeting has shown it’s staying power since it has been 175 years since that first card was

printed. The design was not without controversy, since children appeared to be enjoying drinking something in a glass. Cole and Callcott were accused of influencing underage drinking. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was published in 1843. It had such an impact one can only imagine that it helped spur the Christmas Card along. Previously it had

been a tradition of Victorian society to “party” via banquets and write lengthy letters to family and friends during the holiday season.

That was England.

30 years later, Louis Prang, a Prussian immigrant printed the first Christmas Card in the United States.

learned the art from his business partner Juluis Mayer.

The card was different than its British counterpart. It was simple. A painting of a single flower and the words “Merry Christmas”.

In spite of all of this interesting history, it really took

the Christmas Card a while to take off. And take off it did. Now, in this modern age, over 2 billion Christmas Cards are sent annually as well as 500 million e-cards. It also birthed an artistic genre that thousands of artists and writers have

participated in. The birth of the Christmas Card 175 years ago was basically the birth of the greeting card industry.

Take Action to Prevent Falls

W

e all know older people who have fallen – and been shaken up, broken a bone, or even fatally injured because of the fall. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in every four Americans falls each year: that’s one adult

aged 65+ falling in the US every second of every year, and one dying once every 19 minutes.

Falls are serious business and they are not inevitable. Diabetics, the obese, people with arthritis, those taking a wide range of medications, with impaired vision, with foot, back or hip pain, or who are clinically depressed are all at greater risk of falling in their homes or outdoors.

What You Can Do: There is a lot that ordinary people can do to reduce their risk of falling, mostly common sense measures: remove objects on the floor or furniture that pose obstacles, fix loose carpeting and throw rugs, make sure stairs are clear and have handrails, wear supportive shoes rather than slippers, use nightlights for walking around

the house in the dark, take care of your vision and your health, pay close attention when walking. Two organizations, AARP and the CDC, have excellent fall-prevention checklists online with clear and easy-to-implement recommendations.

What a Podiatrist Can Do: A podiatrist should be an older person’s best friend. He or she is uniquely poised to assess a patient’s risk of falling in a number of ways and implement preventive measures.

In addition to looking at the condition and strength of a patient’s feet and ankles, the doctor can assess a person’s balance, gait and muscle strength.

A podiatrist can offer almost immediate pain relief from many foot ailments. A podiatrist has therapies for diabetic foot conditions. He or she will

look at a patient’s shoes and see if they fit properly and if the shoes are the cause of foot pain or discomfort. A podiatrist can also advise about other risk factors in a patient’s life, including medications, and will refer patients to their primary care physicians if needed. The older person should see a podiatrist annually for an evaluation.

The number of people over 65, even over 100, is growing rapidly. These are the age groups most likely to fall and for whom fall prevention is the top priority this fall.

n a brisk afternoon of November 28th, 2019, lines formed at both Jacob’s Soul Food Restaurant locations in Harlem, for the annual Thanksgiving meal giveaway, which started in 2010.

Rashid Niang, the co-owner of Jacob’s Restaurant, immigrated to the United States from Senegal in 1988. He held various positions at Manna’s Restaurant from 1999 to 2009, where he met his wife, Trinidadian immigrant Kim Lum Chan Niang, who is the co-owner of Jacob’s Restaurant. The couple opened the first Jacob’s Restaurant in 2009, located on 373 Lenox Avenue, naming the restau-

rant after Rashid’s father.

The second restaurant was opened in 2010, located on 2695 Frederick Douglass Blvd.

Speaking on the annual Thanksgiving meal giveaway and what it means to him, Rashid said “It is a way to say thank you to all of my customers. It’s a long process and hard work. But, we do it with a smile. It makes me feel great. It’s a way to tell the Harlem community, thanks for what you have done for me.”

Pastor Edward Oliver Jr. a volunteer in attendance spoke on Rashid Niang’s character saying “It’s a blessing that this man can serve free meals in two locations - serving his community. He doesn’t have to do it, his heart is big. He’s

a blessing, not only on this day but in general. He makes his presence known and he knows the people.

This is a blessing, he could be making money on this day, but he’s not doing that.

He has a heart for the people. We pray that people understand that and continue to patronage this business.”

Rashid Niang has con-

tinually been active in the community. He has an ongoing relationship with both First Baptist Church and Blessed Trinity Baptist Church, which had several volunteers at each Jacob’s Restaurant location for Thanksgiving.

Princess Jenkins, the owner of the clothing boutique, The Brownstone, has

volunteered at Jacobs on Thanksgiving along with her husband Polo Green, owner of Harlem Masters, for seven years. Speaking on the importance of the event, she said “Jacobs has been a long-time sponsor of women in the Black nonprofit organizations. It’s a way to assist him in feeding the community. It’s about a circle, we all have to hold hands to complete the circle that helps to develop Harlem.”

David Taylor, manager and chef of Jacob’s restaurant on Frederick Douglas, spoke on the preparation for the event, saying “It

takes us a few days. Three to four days. In the morning [Thanksgiving] we come in, we’re here from four o’clock in the morning, so we can let people in by eleven.”

Over 800 people were fed at Jacob’s Restaurants on Thanksgiving day. Each person received trays for hot food and the salad bar, along with a beverageand dessert . Rashid, Kim and their children, staff members and volunteers all contributed to the success of the event, giving back to Harlem and more importantly, giving thanks.

This year’s Fair offered students access to more than 50 HBCU admissions representatives, alumni, and staff, along with college and scholarship resources from organizations like the College Board and other notable associations. There also were workshops and guest speakers with a focus on helping students gain the knowledge and tools to navigate the higher education process.

For qualified seniors, a number of schools offered onsite admissions, fee waivers, and scholarships. To date, 1513 students were admit-

ted on-site, 2,358 fees were waived, more than $2,534,000 were awarded in scholarships and 489 students were offered scholarships.

“This year’s fair was the largest in recent history. We know that our community has had a renewed interest in HBCU and we are thrilled to be able to provide the unique opportunity to interact with the college admissions officers and recruiters. Providing students with access to higher education opportunities is one of the most important things we do for our children at the New

York Urban League,” Arva Rice President and CEO New York Urban League.

All students were encouraged to pre-register for the best access to schools, workshops and all aspects of the fair which allowed for the record number of acceptances and scholarships awarded. More than 5,000 students participated in this year’s Fair. All students were required to register individually so that schools would have access to student information for on-site admissions and/or future enrollment communication.

ovember 30, 2019, was Small Business Saturday®.

Starting in 2010, American Express designated this day—the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year— to encourage people to “Shop Small.” The financial services company reports that since the commemoration began, “Consumers have reported spending an estimated $103 billion across all Small Business Saturdays combined.”

As a community revitalization expert, I welcome every chance to shine a spotlight on the small businesses and local entrepreneurs who make up the economic engine of most small and mid-size towns and cities.

Days like Small Business Saturday can help business owners get face time with

customers who might not normally shop there. And consumers get to see what they might be missing—the personal connections and experiences they may not always get from online or big box retailers.

Still, shopping small and local can and should be more than a symbolic oneday-a-year event. Anyone who wants a stronger, more vibrant community needs to support their small businesses every day. They are the key to economic revitalization. They play a vital role in creating the “sense of place” that gives a community its competitive advantage.

There’s a symbiotic relationship between residents and small business owners. They really need each other. Small businesses provide jobs and keep the dollars circulating locally.

Their owners have an active and personal interest in the well-being of the community. They live there. Their kids go to school there.

They care about what happens.

When wealth is created, business owners are more likely to turn around and reinvest in the community.

In fact, small businesses have a far more important role in their communities than ever before. The old “pillars”—big institutions like banks, hospitals, media outlets, and other businesses—are no longer locally owned. The executives who work for them play a critical short-term role in the community, but often they’re

The Economics and Legislation of Marijuana

Rogers s New York State moves closer to legalizing the recreational use of Marijuana, the question that is yet to be answered is what will be the economic Impact of that legislation on Harlem and other urban communities throughout New York State. The New York Chapter of the NAACP and Manhattan Community Board 10 hosted a Marijuana Economic Forum on Monday November 25th at Touro College to encourage more community involvement in addressing that question.

Special recognition awards were given to four trailblazers

who have taken leadership positions in the development of community awareness, support and advocacy for making sure that the language in the States cannabis legalization legislation provide economic benefits to the urban communities who were victimized by unjust and many times racist marijuana laws.

Leslie Stone “Let’s Talk Cannabiz”, Regina Smith “Harlem Business Alliance”, Yasmin Hurston “NYC Minority Alliance” and Julian Hill “We Rise to Legalize” were the four trailblazers recognized by the NAACP. The program began with the showing of “Grass is Greener” a Netflix documentary that focuses on the decades of

politics and racism which was the foundation of the criminalization of Marijuana.

I was clear about the role economics played in the early marijuana propaganda campaigns funded by wealthy businessmen. The campaign was to prevent the commercial use of Hemp in making paper and clothing, but marijuana (Reefer Madness) was an easier target .

Both Marijuana and Hemp are cannabis plants.

The Grass is Greener film shows how racism was also used in the government’s move to criminalization cannabis making it a schedule 1 drug.

(Schedule 1 drugs are addictive and have no medical benefit).

The film showed that due to the

political awareness movements of the 1960’s the government ignored research that proved that the medical use of marijuana could be beneficial and contradicted early propaganda and misinformation about marijuana.

Marijuana became a weapon to imprison young people who were in the anti-war movements and the political unrest in urban communities. For over four decades people of color blacks in particular were subjected to criminal persecution for small amounts of marijuana in disproportionate numbers compared to whites.

The question the Grass is Greener film presented was “now that the truth about can-

nabis is out and the medical and recreational use of Cannabis is projected to produce billions of dollars “what happens to the urban communities that were politically and racially victimized for so many years”? After the film and the awards that question was addressed by the awardees.

Regina Smith talked about HBA’s position to have language in the marijuana legalization bill that is being developed by the state to include items such as money set asides to assist urban communities to create cannabis related businesses in their community, criminal records expunged for arrest due to small amounts of marijuana and special business advantages

for community residents interested in getting in the cannabis industry Each awardee agreed that it will be important for urban community residents to get involved in efforts to assure that cannabis legalization legislation is focused on providing economic opportunities for Harlem residents and residents in urban communities across New York State.

“Motherhood So White: A Memoir of Race, Gender, and parenting in America”

ou got the whole package.

That’s what happens when you choose a mate: you get another set of parents, new siblings, aunts and uncles and, of course, any children your beloved might have and any you might want in the future. That’s the way we build families today, the details of which, says Nefertiti Austin in“Motherhood So White,” depend on the color of your skin.

As a child, Nefertiti Austin basically had to raise herself: her parents had drugs, alcohol, deals to make and better things to do. It was

common, therefore, for Austin and her brother to stay with their grandparents; after their father went to jail and their mother quietly left California, the stay became permanent.

Says Austin, raising a child you’re somehow related to, or taking in a kid whose family you know is common in the Black community. Adoption is not, which is why she had to deflect negative comments when she announced her plans to adopt a Black baby.

The process took time: Austin attended classes to become a certified foster mother first, with the end goal of adoption. She’d decided on the gender of the child

she wanted and was offered the chance to foster other boys; she declined, waiting for the right baby.

Her son, August, arrived in late summer, 2008.

Eager to be the best mother possible, Austin scoured the local library for books on mothering for Black women, and found nothing. Everything seemed written by and for white women, who didn’t have to tell their sons about DWB, who didn’t have to tolerate strangers that assumed single motherhood and welfare went hand-inhand, and who wouldn’t have to explain racism to a preschooler. While “there is nothing more universal than a mother’s love for her child,”

Black mothers have different issues to deal with.

And so, this book came inpart from Austin’s frustration.

The most curious thing, though, is that hers may become a reader’s frustration, too.

As a memoir, this book is very good: author Nefertiti Austin writes about how she overcame a life that nearly made her a statistic, with the help of two loving grandpar-

ents who raised her as if they were her birth parents. Austin goes on to tell why she cast

aside cultural norms in order to forge the path she knew was best for her, and to become the mother she should have had herself.

Again, it’s very good – but it’s also of little help to a reader who is looking for solid advice on dealing with her own unique journey to motherhood as a woman of color. There’s so much more that could have been in this book, but wasn’t, and some of it might have helped educate those of whom Austin is critical.

Still, there’s a certain undeniable comfort in her story, and that could be valuable to the right reader. For her only, add “Motherhood So White” to the scant list of parenting books for women of color, and memoir + advicecould make a good package.
