The annual HARLEM WEEK events - "Summer In the City" and "Harlem Day" drew crowds in the thousands over this past weekend and the weather "almost" cooperated but drenched the crowd during the last couple hours on Sunday. Nevertheless, those who attended enjoyed the food, entertainment, vendors and information booths. The final major HARLEM WEEK event will be held this Saturday - The Percy-Sutton Walk/Run. If you are not participating, come out and support the runners and walkers.

Three Day Event Planned to Commemorate First African Landing in Virginia

I

n August 1619, more than 20 Africans landed at Old Point Comfort, the present-day Fort Monroe in Hampton, Va., and were forced into labor as slaves.

That was the beginning of the slave trade in America.

This month, 400 years after that humiliating and disgraceful day, the city of Hampton will commemorate “African Landing Day.” The three-day commemoration, which begins Aug. 23, will include a host of special guests and a variety of history tours, education programs and special exhibits.

“One of the objectives we want to achieve is to correct history,” said retired Lt. Col. Claude Vann, the Hampton 2019 Commission co-chair.

“I think history has done the African American a disservice

because we have never been told what our real history was.

For the folks here at Hampton, particularly, we were taught that the first African landed in Jamestown. Well, that’s incorrect,” Vann said.

The place where the first African landed was Point Comfort, described by PRI.org as far east as you can get in Virginia— on a peninsula that extends out into the Chesapeake Bay. To get to it, you have to cross a bridge over a moat.

On the other side is the largest stone fort in America — Fort Monroe — encompassing 565 acres, according to PRI. “The city saw the importance of this commemoration early on and they created a commission within the city for it,” said Luci Cochran, the executive director of the Hampton History Museum.

“This is a history that so many people are not aware of and we want people to understand that the landing of the first African is a thread that shaped everything.

“It shaped our country and it continues to affect our country today,” she said.

According to a news release, the commemoration kicks off on Friday, August 23 at 12:00 p.m. at the Hampton Roads Convention Center where Byron Pitts of ABC Nightline, and formerly of CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes, will host the African-American

The event will feature a National Park Service Town Hall, libation ceremony, blessing of the land, a tribute to the ancestors with a release of 400 butterflies, and Ghanaian drumming.

“From a historian’s perspective, we hope people will take away that all of this wasn’t an accident,” said Beth Austin of the Hampton History Museum, who conducted much of the research. “It happened in a global context both in terms of the wider Atlantic world in 1619 and it had the enormous global impact. The slave trade and the practice of slavery in America impacted the New World and Africa and it’s had a very longterm and profound legacy.”

Winners of the 25th Annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest are in Crown Heights and Brooklyn Heights

he winners of the 25th annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest, presented by Brooklyn Botanic Garden in cooperation with Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, were announced earlier this month at a press conference held on the victorious residential block, Lincoln Place between Nostrand and New York Avenues in Crown Heights, represented by block association Preserving Lincoln’s Abundant Natural Treasures (P.L.A.N.T.s).

Representatives from the winning commercial block, Montague Street between Henry and Hicks Streets in Brooklyn Heights, represented by Montague Street BID, were also on hand, as were winners in the contest’s other categories.

During the press conference, the office of the Brooklyn Borough President also issued a Proclamation recognizing the significance of 25 years of the contest and Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s leadership in community building through planting, greening, and beautification, and commending groups of

residents who seek to improve their neighborhoods.

“Congratulations to Preserving Lincoln’s Abundant Natural Treasures on being named this year’s Greenest Block,” said BP Adams. “When communities come together to beautify their streets and improve their environment, it brings our borough closer together as One Brooklyn. By working together, we are planting solid roots that will produce healthy communities and families.”

For 25 years, the Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest has been a cornerstone of Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s community greening initiatives, promoting not only streetscape greening, but also social cohesion and neighborly connectivity.

Scot Medbury, president of Brooklyn Botanic Garden, remarked on the Greenest Block entries as evidence of sustained commitment to horticultural best practices and community involvement.

“I am honored to congratulate Crown Heights’ very own P.L.A.N.T.s, the Montague Street BID, and every commu-

Blocks are judged on a variety of criteria, including vibrant use of color, greening effort, resident involvement, plant sustainability, soil and mulch maintenance, street tree bed care, and all-around most efficient gardening practices. A wide variety of judges and professional

t has been five years since our city was shaken to its core watching Eric Garner being killed on video from a police chokehold. After the Staten Island grand jury handed down their verdict, I stated that Officer Pantaleo should be terminated; today that termination has come to pass. Commissioner O’Neill’s decision was I believe the correct one. Police officers carry the authority to take away life and liberty; with that authority comes the highest standard of responsibility to utilize the full range of de-escalation tools at their disposal. There is still a lot of anger and pain, and for the Garner family and so many of their supporters it may never go away.

But with today’s decision, I hope we can look forward and create a symbiotic relationship between law enforcement and the citizens they put their lives on the line to serve and protect. The pursuit of justice continues,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams.

Adams view on this is significant because he is from a background of being abused by police officers and being a member of New York’s Finest. Let us look at

his background: Eric Leroy Adams was born in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn on September 1, 1960, the fourth of six children for his mother Dorothy, a house cleaner and cook, and his father Leroy, a butcher. Growing up in a working-class household in South Jamaica, Queens, Eric showed an early interest in computers, but was drawn to public service at the early age of 15 after he and his brother were beaten badly by police officers; the violent encounter would later motivate him to pursue a career in law enforcement, a decision reinforced by mentors like Reverend Herbert Daughtry and Jitu Weusi.

Following a public school journey capped by his graduation from Bayside High School, Eric went on to earn an Associate in Arts degree in data processing

from the New York City College of Technology, a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and a Master of Public Administration degree from Marist College. Eric paid his way through his collegiate studies through a number of jobs, including work in the mailroom of an accounting firm, as a mechanic, and as a clerk in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office.

Eric graduated from the New York City Police Academy in 1984 as one of the highest-ranked students in his class. After initially serving with the New York City Transit Police Department, he was transferred to the New York City Police Department (NYPD) with the merging of the city’s police forces. During the course of his 22-year law enforcement career, Eric served in the 94th Precinct (Greenpoint), 88th Precinct (Clinton Hill and Fort Greene), and the 6th Precinct (Greenwich Village and West Village), where he retired at the rank of captain. As a member of New York’s Finest, Eric made the kind of life-and-death decisions that reflect insight, expertise, and poise under fire, earning him a reputation for going above

and beyond the call of duty.

In 1995, Eric co-founded 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, an advocacy group that rose to nationwide prominence speaking out against police brutality, racial profiling, and departmental diversity. He also served at one time as president of the Grand Council of Guardians, a statewide fraternal society for African-Americans in law enforcement. Through leadership roles in these organizations, Eric helped raise thousands of dollars for worthy causes across New York City.

Eric was elected to the first of four terms in the New York State Senate in 2006, where he represented a diverse range of neighborhoods across Brownsville and central Brooklyn. During his tenure in the State Legislature, he chaired both the Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs Committee and the Racing, Gaming, and Wagering Committee. In 2013, Brooklynites elected Eric as the first person of color to serve as their borough president; he is currently serving his second term as Brooklyn’s chief executive.

Readiness Checklist: 5 Steps to Prep for Buying a Home (Statepoint)

or many Americans, making the jump to buying that first house is a significant achievement that allows them to put their mark on their own space, while creating room for family and pets.

But how do you know you’re ready?

Americans see homeownership as an investment in their future, yet they are concerned about the steps they need to take to put themselves into a position to buy, according to the “How Americans View Homeownership” survey conducted by The Harris Poll April 17–29, 2019, among 1,004 U.S. adults 21 and older on behalf of

Wells Fargo. The study showed that 44 percent of non-homeowners identified saving for a down payment as a top barrier to buying, more so than any other obstacle.

“Homeownership is very much a part of the American Dream, yet too many first-time buyers don’t know where to start,” says Liz Bryant, Wells Fargo Home Lending’s national retail sales leader. “We find that a great way to get moving down the path to homeownership is with a conversation. By reaching out to your mortgage lender, your banker or even a housing counselor, you can start putting together a plan that will help get you on your way.”

Here are some steps to consider: • Research lenders and loan options. Identify a lender who has a breadth of home loan options, including low down payment mortgages, and who is willing to provide you with personalized guidance. Then just start the conversation.

• Know your goal.

Your mortgage consultant can help, and so can a financial health banker or a housing counselor. A discussion about spending, saving, debt and credit will help you make decisions about what you can afford, how much you need to save and whether you need to do work to improve your credit score.

• Get your down pay-

• Keep an eye on overall debt. While there’s room for student

loans and credit card debt, a good rule of thumb is to keep your overall debt level -- including your new mortgage -- at or below 36 percent of gross monthly income.

• Think beyond the down payment. Consider setting aside 1-2 percent of the purchase price of

your home each year for maintenance projects. If that seems like too much, start with less and work your way up.

ARLEM WEEK 2019 will officially end on Saturday August 24th with the Percy E Sutton Harlem 5K Run, Community Health Walk and the Children’s Run starting at 8:00 am on St. Nicholas Avenue and 135th Street. The soft launch of the highly anticipated Harlem Jazz and Music Festival will begin at the same location from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on the St. Nicholas Park Great Lawn (see www.iloveny. com/harlemweek.) with a tribute to Nina Simone and Smokey Robinson.

Jazz and music lovers are familiar with famous Jazz and Music Festivals such as the New Port Jazz Festival in Rhode Island which has been going strong since 1954.

The Monterey Jazz Festival in California, Billie Holliday and Louis Armstrong were the headline act when it began in1958.

There are several other successful American and International music and jazz festivals but there has never been an annual Jazz and Music festival in Harlem the cultural capital in Urban America.

For the past 45 years HARLEM WEEK has been the closest thing to an annual music festival in Harlem. The success of HARLEM WEEK who celebrated the first HARLEM DAY in 1974

was the Beginning of the Second Harlem Renaissance and has been a foundation for the current tourism industry growth in Harlem.

The West Harlem Development Corp and HARLEM WEEK Inc. along with other Civic Organizations and the public and private sector decided that the time was right for Harlem to have an annual Jazz and Music Festival starting in August 2020. This year New York State has designated Harlem as a tourism location during the month of August (see above I love NY site).

When you consider Harlem’s historic and cultural contribution to music in America and internationally along with the current growth and development of the Harlem tourism industry, an annual Harlem jazz and music festival that would follow HARLEM WEEK has the potential of becoming a major economic development tool just as jazz and music festivals have proven to be throughout the United States and internationally.

As part of this year’s HJ&MF soft launch The Harlem Tourism Board, in conjunction with The Soul City Social Broadcasting Network, and the Sainteus Agency will coordinate a special business information symposium on Tuesday August 27th from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. movie preview for the upcoming biopic featuring the life of legendary abolitionist Harriet Tubman, entitled “Harriet,” was viewed by over ten million people in five days from July 21 to July 26 on Facebook. Another social media post of the same movie trailer on YouTube received over four million views. The movie will be released on November 1.

The film stars British actress Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman and Janelle Monae, Joe Alwyn and Leslie Odom.

“Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, “Harriet” tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history,” a write-up by Focus Features read.

The world premiere for “Harriet” will take place at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2019.

arlem residents and visitors you must experience some of these new and old favorite restaurants featured on the next page. Also, while out dining visit some of the retailers listed below.

Harlem Restaurant Week offers great menu items from $5 to $35. In the Bradhurst area we have experienced Hot Pot’s Jamaican food for years in Harlem, however now Patrick the owner has opened “Patrick’s Place” (corner of 151st and Frederick Douglas Blvd) offering a full bar and jazz music on Thursdays and for Sunday brunch. Around the corner from Patrick’s is City Island in the City, a new seafood place I plan to tryout for the first time during “Restaurant Week.” Just one block away we have a new fine dining Italian restaurant “

Lucille’s (151st, corner of Macombs Place).

On Broadway you can find Mamashushi, Honeywell, At the Wallace and Harlem Public within blocks from each other.

Sofritos in Riverbank Park has been opened for a while now but summer is the time to go and enjoy cocktails and specials outside near the water with a great view of the George Washington bridge and New Jersey.

East Harlem has a coupe of new restaurants to experience

such as Amor, Daps Eats, East Harlem Bottling Company and Nocciola Ristorante. On 124th and Madison we have one of my long time favorites Sisters’ Cuisine with some great Caribbean food you can eat in or take out.

Central Harlem Lenox Avenue has become restaurant row with more than 18 restaurants from 110th to 145th Streets Whatever your palate is looking for, you probably can find in this hub of Harlem. Of course

the famous Sylvia’s, a Harlem “must go” serves up some of the best soul food. Marcus Samuelson’s Red Rooster (Le-

nox bet 125th and 124th) attracts an international crowd to this area for happy hour, his Swedish meatballs and some blues and jazz downstairs at Ginny’s Supperclub. Across the street Corner Social has become the place to hang out all day for locals. Cove Lounge, next to Corner Social attracts a younger crowd, such as myself at 67 years old (smile) and their red velvet waffles and chicken is to die for.

I know I have not mentioned

all the restaurants as there are more than 30. I plan to visit all from now throughout the holidays. Perhaps I will meet you at one. Let’s start enjoying our restaurants Harlem.

By: Makeda Viechweg n West 135th Street from Fifth Avenue to St. Nicholas Avenue in Harlem the streets were filled with festivities for everyone to enjoy on August 17-18.

The weekend-long celebration part of HARLEM WEEK took up blocks and blocks of the Harlem neighborhood with vendors, music, food, games, festivals, and performances on stage.

Here’s what happened on each day highlighting only some of the events: Summer in the City August 17th The stage on 135th and St. Nicholas Avenue featured performances by Vy Higginsen, Marcuse George, Jeff Foxx Band and more including a fashion show.

The Summer in the City day long festival also featured a Higher Education Fair Expo with over 20 colleges, saluting the CUNY, SUNY, and HBCU institutions. Anyone interested in going to these colleges learned about the admissions process, received viewbooks, college tours, and more information on the institutions.

There was non-stop entertainment from stage to streets as WHCR 90.3 FM created a dance floor in the middle of the street in front of their tent playing upbeat music for people to show off their moves.

NYPD Community Affairs stationed a rock climbing wall for children to challenge themselves to see if they can climb to the top for fun. More children’s activities were found lower

down at the Children’s Festival.

Children enjoyed bouncing in a bounce caster and slide, face painting, popcorn and cotton candy machines, and flying drones.

Like the main stage,

young artists performed in an open space for their audience. The Children’s Festival featured a performance by ten year-old rapper, producer, and clothing line designer Young Trell who performed his single

The three political officials also proclaimed Harlem Day for their 45th annual holiday. “We believe that this is a great day for Harlem, a great day for the

village,” said Senator Benjamin. “We wanted to present a proclamation to Harlem Day, to the 45th annual holiday.”

outine check-ups are essential for adolescents and young adults. As health risks and concerns are rapidly changing during the teen years, these preventive services can help keep your teens healthy and safe. Experts say that conversations between doctors, patients and their families during these visits are very important.

“Habits formed in adolescence often continue into adulthood, making this a key period for encouraging behaviors that promote health and reduce risk,” says Dr. Elizabeth Alderman, chair of American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Adolescence. “Routine check-ups are a great time to encourage adolescents to actively partic-

To help families prepare for their teen’s next appointment, here are some questions doctors may ask and some tips for making the most of these visits. These tips were developed by the Adolescent

• Your teen’s doctor may

ask them questions like “What are your responsibilities at home?” and “What are you good at?” in an effort to gauge their emotional development, their ability to cope with stress, and assess their risk for depression, anxiety, or other concerns.

• You may be asked general questions about your home, neighborhood, and your teen’s school environments in order to help the doctor determine whether your child is eating enough, feels safe, and is getting enough sleep. This can offer an overall picture of your teen’s well-being.

• Your teen’s doctor will likely ask your teen about their sexual activity, contraceptive methods, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and pregnancy prevention, as well as about their use of tobacco, e-cigarettes, alcohol, and pre-

scription and street drugs. You may be asked about the kind of conversations you’re having at home about avoiding risky behaviors.

• Routine check-ups are also a good time to see whether a patient is at risk of developing eating disorders, so the doctor may ask your teen about their diet, exercise routine, and feelings about their body with questions like, “how do you feel about the way you look?” and “do you ever skip meals?”

• Your teen’s doctor may start discussions on topics like puberty, sexual development, gender identity, sexual attraction and sexuality. Teens should feel safe discussing these topics with their doctor and with you.

“There is a gap between what adolescents and young

adults want to discuss and what they actually talk about during doctor’s visits,” says Dr. Alderman, who points out that doctors are more likely to gather accurate information about a teen’s health when parents are supportive of confidential, oneon-one time between teens and their doctors. “Confidentiality is essential to adolescent health care, empowering teens to get the information they need to stay healthy. Teens and parents, separately, should make a list of questions and discussion topics to address with the teen’s doctor.”

Y

our teacher says “no fighting on the playground.”

No pushing, no smacking, and definitely, no hitting. It’s not nice, he says. That’s what bullies do, you know. But as you’ll see in “A Fist for Joe Louis and Me” by Trinka Hakes Noble, illustrated by Nicole Tadgell, sometimes fists and gloves equals a fistful of friendship.

It was the best of traditions: every Friday evening, right after work, Gordy’s dad gave Gordy boxing lessons. After that, they’d eat dinner together and listen to the fights on the local radio station.

It was especially good when Joe Louis was in the ring.

But then “times got hard,” people started talking about Germany, and Gordy’s dad lost his job. The Friday night tradition stopped for awhile, and Gordy’s mom had to take in some tailoring to pay for the family’s groceries.

One night, when Mr. Rubinstein, whose family left Germany to escape the Nazis, stopped to drop off the work, his son, Ira, came along.

That was when Gordy learned that other kids admired Joe Lewis, too.

But Ira didn’t know the first thing about boxing! He didn’t even

know what “dukes” were, so Gordy had some teaching to do.

Every time Mr. Rubinstein dropped off some work for Gordy’s mom, Gordy and Ira practiced boxing out in the alley.

Gordy taught Ira how to keep from getting hit too hard and they had fun pretending. They even made up boxing names for themselves.

Weeks later, that practice and pretend came in handy when a real bully came after Ira. Gordy stepped into the fray because he knew Joe Louis wouldn’t let Ira fight alone, but hitting someone in anger made him sick.

That evening, Ira and his father came over to listen to Joe Louis versus Max Schmeling on the radio. For years to come, it would be called The Fight of the Century but in the end, it wouldn’t last long: just a little over two minutes.

Its effect on two little boys, however, would last for many years…

Considering all that’s happened in the recent past, “A Fist for Joe Louis and Me” couldn’t be more timely.

Using as a backdrop an event that made history nearly ninety years ago, author Trinka Hakes Noble tells a story of a young African American boy and his

friendship with a Jewish boy. It’s a tale set during the Depression when anti-Semitism and rac-

ism made poverty seem a little bit sharper but Noble’s characters don’t complain; instead, they face problems together, which leaves behind the idea that we can find common ground and mutual interest, if we’re open to them.
