March is Women History Month!

Throughout the month of March we will feature women who have made a difference in our community. This week we present LaVerna Fountain who has inspired and assisted small businesses in Harlem, including the Harlem Community News. As Vice President for Strategic Communications and Construction Business Initiatives at Columbia University. La-Verna was an advocate for small businesses doing business with Columbia University. I am personally grateful to La-Verna in that when she learned I was in business for 20 years, she led a committee of a dozen of my supporters for one year to plan for my 20th Anniversary celebration which was held at Alhambra Ballroom, where about 200 attended in 2015. Although retired from Columbia, La-Verna continues to inspire small business owners and work with organizations resolving conflicts. (see page 3) The vaccines are on the way.

The 3rd stimulus check and other aid is on the way as the Biden Administration has delivered on his promise and passed the $1.9 Trillion relief package. I hope most will join me and get vaccinated so that we can begin to enjoy getting together again this summer. I am looking forward to a Juneteenth celebration and hopeful some outdoor events will be back during the summer.

When you shop with local small businesses it is more likely that money will continue to circulate within your community. Many of our small business owners are raising their family in the community. Let us celebrate Women’s History month by shopping with women-owned businesses.

Resolving Conflict through Sacred Listening Celebrating the Work of La-Verna Fountain

One of Fountain’s current clients Bowery Residents’ Committee (BRC) was put in a predicament when it was discovered that one of their residential development sites in Inwood is also consecrated land where the native Lenape tribe held sacred ceremonies and enslaved Africans were buried.

Fountain has taken the lead on holding space for conversations she calls “sacred listening sessions” to unpack this predicament. “We need to respect and honor the people who were disrespected here, we can’t ignore them,” said Fountain. “To me it’s very powerful for BRC to say we aren’t going to move ahead until we listen.

Sometimes it’s painful and people are afraid to speak up because people don’t want to be seen a certain way, which is why I try to create safe spaces.”

Another part of Fountain’s current consulting work includes assisting a client in creating a curriculum on holistic wellness (emotional, en-

vironmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual) for individuals who are struggling with substance abuse and their family members.

Around 2006 Fountain began working at Columbia University, where she earned a Master’s degree in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution. She served as Vice President for Strategic Communications and Construction Business Initiatives at Columbia for many years and taught the graduate-level Introductory to Negotiations class.

A main goal of Fountian’s work as Vice President had to do with building connections between the university and the Harlem community it’s located in. Some of the partnerships she is grateful for are with the Women’s Chamber of Commerce, The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and Harlem Business Alliance.

Fountain has also collaborated over the years with Harlem Community Newspapers and admires it’s Editor-in-chief Pat Stevenson for her important contribution to uplifting the community. “When I talk to Pat I get so much positivity, that I had no choice, but to support her,” said Fountain. “I met someone who believes in the goodness of people, who believes in the power of the community, who wants very much

for people to feel good about themselves and to see the positive.”

Prior to working at Columbia, Fountain was Senior Advisor at the global NGO Save the Children. One of her accomplishments as Senior Advisor was organizing a summit that brought together young people from impoverished areas all over the country including Appalachia, Mississippi Delta and Brooklyn, N.Y. to share their life story with each other. “To me what was eye opening in listening was how similar their story was regardless of where they came from,” said Fountain. “Each

of the stories was about power coming in and doing things to communities without recognizing the value of the people who are in those communities.”

As an entrepreneur and author of two books, Fountain is an example of a hard working and inspiring female leader.

Not only has she learned the value of mentorship and femininity as power, but also the importance of self-care. “Traditional old school values say my first responsibility is not myself as a woman, my first responsibility is my family, except not realizing the best thing I can do for my family is

to take care of me, that’s a little bit of a mind twist sometimes,” she said.

Fountain lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with her husband of 38 years James Fountain and their German Shepard. Her son Andrew Fountain is a filmmaker. Fountain identifies as an introvert, having to spend time alone to regain energy. She also deeply values her friendships: “I make sure that I have very healthy, positive, loving relationships with other women. I call them my Phenomenal Women.”

hile many of us do everything in our power to avoid conflict, La-Verna Fountain has made it her life’s mission to lean into conflict with curiosity, compassion and a resolve to solve it.

“I’ve learned for myself that my purpose in life is to help be a bridge that would bring people together,” said Fountain.

“My goal has always been to see another perspective, to understand, respect and value a voice that was not my own, and help share that so we as human beings can understand that there is a value and worth in another perspective.”

After years of developing her interpersonal and conflict-resolution talents, Fountain founded her own communications consulting firm Meaningful Communications Matters in November 2018. She has recently been involved in facilitating poignant and painful conversations related to the senseless killings of Black and Brown people at the hands of police.

Fountain brings a unique and sensitive viewpoint when engaging with those whose actions reflect racist beliefs: “I have always looked below the initial.

he Apollo Theater’s fifth bi-annual WOW (Women of the World) Festival

will take place online this year kicking off Saturday, March 20, and ending Sunday, March 21, 2021, via apollotheater. org. The popular international festival elevates the voices, experiences, and truth of women spanning all ages and will feature more than 80 thought leaders, scholars, artists and performers. The two-day all digital festival sets the tone with this year’s theme Black Women Transcending! and will provide global access to an array of music, film, workshops, conversations, panels and per-

Karen Chilton, author of “Hazel Scott: The Pioneering Journey of a Jazz Pianist,” will lead this celebration of Scott with special guests, Damien Sneed and Camille

WOW: Teen Summit will return to the festival and will dissect gender politics and how it impacts girls and young women of color. Through performances from singer, songwriter and spoken-word artist Brianna Knight and singer Alyssa Martinez and a panel discussion moderated by reporter and producer Kay Angrum with community activists Akia S. Callum, Malaysia Freeman, and Hebh Jamal, audience members will be encouraged as a collective to take action towards their goals.

The Festival will close with Apollo Film Presents: ImageNation’s Cocktails & Sol Cinema, featuring short films by women from around the world in speculative fiction, sci-fi, fantasy and folklore. Additional details and a complete WOW Festival line-up will be announced at a later date.

How Democracy Reform Protects Black Political Power

he 2020 elections taught us that our democracy is both strong and fragile. This is the time to shore it up with the For the People Act that is now waiting for action by Congress.

Voters showed the strength of our democracy by showing up in record numbers to cast ballots to defeat an incumbent president. And voters in Georgia, led by Black voters, made history by electing a progressive Black preacher and Jewish filmmaker to the U.S. Senate.

What makes our democracy strong is that people spent years organizing and building the capacity to educate and motivate voters.

We also saw that our democracy is fragile. A president who did not want to give up his power spent weeks enraging his supporters with lies about the election. He tried to bully state officials to manufacture enough votes to overturn the election. He pres-

sured members of Congress and his own vice president to trash the Constitution. And he urged his supporters to come to Washington and fight to keep him in power. We all saw how that turned out— with a noose on the Capitol lawn, Confederate flags in the rotunda, and members of Congress and their staff hiding in fear for their lives.

The impeachment trial also showed both our strength and fragility. The House of Representatives voted to impeach the president for inciting an insurrection, and a clear bipartisan majority of the U.S. Senate voted to convict him. But most Republican senators refused to defend democracy and hold Trump accountable for threatening it – and that will encourage extremists to turn to violence again.

And now we see Republican state legislators trying to make it harder for people to register and vote. Already this year, they have introduced more than 100 bills to restrict

voting.

That’s why we need to take the same kind of energy that we put into the elections and turn it toward getting the House and Senate to pass the For the People Act. The first part of the For the People Act is a version of the Voter Empowerment Act that the late Rep. John Lewis championed for the last 10 years. It would encourage online and same-day registration—and preregistration for youth who will reach voting age by Election Day. It would encourage trust in the election process with paper ballots and recounts.

Other parts of the For the People Act would restrict the power of big money in politics. And it would take on the kind of cynical partisan redistricting that state-level Republicans have used to give themselves far more power in state legislatures and in Congress than they deserve based on their share of the vote.

Voter suppression, gerrymandering, and big money

are all tools being used by right-wing leaders who fear the inclusive multiracial and multiethnic democracy we are building. They are willing to weaken democracy if it will maintain their ability to hang onto power even though they are a shrinking minority.

We must not let them.

Erecting barriers to try to keep Black people from voting is an ugly part of our past that we must make sure is not part of our future.

Home Buying in Harlem Be Prepared to Buy Now Rev. Dr. Charles Butler

T

he big challenge now for most first-time home buyers is dealing with the rising home values. These high market values are pricing many Harlem residents out of the market. However, some first-time buyers are determined to own a home in their beloved community and are willing to do whatever it takes to make that dream a reality. In many cases, these prospective home buyers are taking out larger mortgage amounts than they can afford.

This can be a costly mistake because lenders are basing your pre-approval on your gross income. However, you live on your net income which is usually 30-35% less than the gross amount. This additional amount can make a really big difference in having a comfortable mortgage payment or struggling to pay your mortgage and meet other monthly obligations.

The justification being used by both the buyers and loan officers for obtaining a higher mortgage amount is the interest rates are still exceptionally low.

So, having a 30-year fixed rate mortgage will not significantly affect your monthly mortgage payment. This to an extent might be true, but still as a first-time

home buyer you must look at the larger financial picture.

Most lenders are only giving a pre-approval of 3 - 4 times your annual income. Lenders will increase that number if you are considering purchasing a multi-family home. They will add about 70% of the projected rental income into your monthly gross amount if you are purchasing a 2-4 family home. Again, the challenge is the market price.

Most of units are now being sold for several million dollars.

Lenders are also only considering your total housing costs and your minimum monthly credit debt when calculating your debt-to-income ratio (DTI).

You will need to review your monthly living expenses to determine the amount of money

you can comfortably afford to spend on a mortgage payment.

After reviewing your monthly household budget, you can calculate what you can comfortably afford to pay for a monthly mortgage. If you are purchasing either a condominium or cooperative unit you must estimate having the additional expense of paying a monthly maintenance fee as part of your housing costs.

You must also have 3-6 months mortgage payment in a reserve account for unexpected emergencies.

Here are some tips to help you avoid making this mistake: (1) Do not borrow more than you can comfortably pay. You want a loan payment that you can make even if you are facing a financial hardship. (2) Shop around before selecting a mortgage product.

Comparison shopping can assist you in finding the best deal. (3) Use your resources. Work closely with your housing counselor.

A Salute to Achievement and Bravery By: W.A. Rogers

E

very year the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce during its end of year gala presents awards to community leaders who strive to improve the quality of life in the Greater Harlem Area. As a tradition a New York City Police officer from a precinct in Manhattan North would be one of the award receptions. Last years end of the year celebration was canceled due to COVID. On December 13th, 2020 at the end of an outdoor Christmas carol performance on the steps of The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, a gunman wielding two pistols randomly began shooting his weapons. Detective Jason Harper and Detective Daurys Gutierrez of the 26th Precinct took actions to guide trapped civilians to safety. The two officers joined by police officer Daurys Gutierrez were able

On February 23rd GHCC in partnership with the City College of New York and The New York Police Department honored the three offices at a special awards ceremony in CCNY’s Great Hall. In Celebration of Black History Month, the Chamber also gave awards to six Black leaders in the NYPD who have made outstanding achievements in the Department. Three

The third female awardee was Deputy Chief Olufunmilola F. Obe the commanding officer of the School Safety Division and a former Commander of Harlem’s 28th Precinct.

The three other male awardees were First Deputy Commissioner Benjamin B. Tucker, Chief of Community Affairs Jeffrey B. Maddrey and Chief

of Detectives Rodney K. Harrison, Chief Harrison is the first African American to hold this position.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea gave very powerful and honest remarks he reflected on the history of NYPD Black police offices such as Samuel Battle the first Black police officer who joined the NYPD in 1911, he talked about Detective Al Howard who’s quick and decisive actions along with his partner Phil Romano in 1958 saved the life of Rev. Martin Luther King when he was stabbed at a book signing event in Harlem’s Blumstein’s Department Store.

The Commissioner also talked about Wilhelmina Holiday, the first African American woman to serve as a deputy commissioner for the NYPD. Commissioner Shea talked about the many racist policies and injustice that exists in all aspects of society, including policing.

The Commissioner went on

to say that “ I’m not in a position to apologize on behalf of all law enforcement, everywhere- that’s beyond my standing. But I can certainly speak for the members of the New York City Police Department, both past and present, by publicly recognizing that we have inherited the burden of our collective history. Our challenge is to ensure that we will not participate in, or tolerate, any further inequality or injustice.”

The Commissioner’s remarks were well received, and many acknowledged the honesty in the PC’s comments and his commitment to addressing an issue that still exist. The leadership roles of the above Black men and women awardees will play a major part in the PC’s stated challenge to address any further inequality or injustice in the New York City Police Department.

The GHCC February 23rd Black History Month ceremony was truly a salute to achievements and bravery.

New York’s UNCF raises over $300K for HBCUs via “A Mind Is...”® Gala

n Thursday, March 4, 2021, over 350 guests participated in the New York United Negro College Fund‘s (UNCF) virtual gala to raise critical funds to help students earn college degrees at the organization’s annual “A Mind Is...”® Gala. The online fundraiser was one of many across the United States raising funds to help students realize their dreams of a college education via HBCUs and many other colleges and universities across the United States. The success of the event exceeded all expectations raising over $300,000 to help local students in need get to and through college at some of the nation’s most important resources for students of color—historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

This event is always one of New York’s finest but due to the pandemic, UNCF’s vital fundraising events have had to scale down and move online.

However, the virtual production did not lose its luster and was fabulous as ever even raising the bar for

others to follow!

Black magnificence prevailed from start to finish!

Infinity Song, a group on the rise recently signed by Roc Nation, got the evening started with “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Michelle Miller, co-host of CBS This Morning: Saturday, kept the event moving without missing a beat! Miller’s team at CBS provided a great video featuring HBCU alumni Stacey Abrams. Kudos to the Taylor Company for the fabulous gala video featuring UNCF Scholar Sydney Green. Miller also introduced esteemed presenters Michael R. Bloomberg, Mellody Hobson, and Dr. Michael L. Lomax.

During the program filled with pomp and purpose, honorees were recognized for helping to advance educational opportunities for African Americans and their commitment to UNCF’s mission of uplifting HBCUs and empowering deserving, talented students to earn college degrees. This year’s honorees included: Thasunda Brown Duckett, CEO, Chase Consumer Banking, received the Leadership Award; PepsiCo, was presented with the Corporate Partner Award; and Dennis M. Walcott, president and CEO, Queens Public Library, was recipient of the Shirley Chisholm Award for Community Service.

The Digital Learning Tools Making Remote-Learning Easier on Everyone (Statepoint)

he past year has demonstrated the importance of digital learning. And thanks to a variety of tools and resources that helped make remote instruction a little less stressful on everyone, teachers, students and parents quickly adapted to the changes brought on by the pandemic.

Music Music has been a particularly difficult subject to provide instruction for at a distance. However, educational foundations have risen to the occasion by creating a trove of resources to aid learning.

For example, the Save the Music Foundation provides free activities for

families, tools for educators to create their own online tutorials and more.

Mathematics Remote learning has only added new challenges to an already difficult subject. The good news is that online tools are helping fill the gaps created by the new normal. Walgreens Expressions Challenge provides outlet for teens dealing with COVID-19 and other mental stresses

M

ore than 10 years ago Walgreens launched its first Expressions Challenge program to encourage teens to use creative arts as an outlet to manage some of life’s stressful circumstances and to guide students to make better life choices. Offered only in Chicago and St. Louis, Walgreens worked with high school districts, teachers and guidance counselors to promote the contest to students grades 9-12. This year, for the first time ever, Expressions is being offered nationally. Submissions are being accepted now through March 31, with 12 winners from three categories to be awarded $2,000 each. Winners will be selected and announced in May 2021.

Formed in 2009, the Expressions Challenge is a creative arts competition in three categories, including visual arts, video production, and spoken word.

Teens are guided to use time

spent working on their creations as outlets for expressing difficulties they are facing. Students’ finished works often address a range of issues from bullying and self-image, to the rapid spread of HIV. Teens today still face these circumstances and more, and for many, their anxieties are compounded by the effects of COVID-19.

“Expressions was created for moments like these. Our country is dealing with the weight of a pandemic that has been so challenging that one can only imagine how young people must feel. Every year, Expressions proves to be more rewarding than the previous year, and Walgreens is pleased to extend this support to teens at a time when our nation could use more compassion and healing,” said John Standley, president, Walgreens.

This year the program includes a Specialty Award category for submissions that ex-

plore the impact of COVID-19.

The lucky winner of this category will receive $1,000 for the best entry that addresses the effects of the pandemic and the importance of getting vaccinated. Wood: The Element of Spring

Wood is the element of spring which will begin on Saturday March 20th.

The two vital organs connected to the Wood element are the Liver (yin) and the Gall Bladder (yang). Jupiter is the planet and east is the direction.

During the spring season, sour is the taste and green is the color. We often relate to spring as a time to clean and make new. Spring is an important time for detoxifying the liver and gall bladder the Wood organs of Spring.

The gall bladder is a pear-shaped sack located in a depression under the liver on your right side.

The function of the gall bladder is to store and

concentrate bile until it is needed in the small intestine for digestion. The bile breaks down fats in food.

If the gall bladder gets congested with bile salts or bacteria; the bile will isolate it and form a pearllike stone around it. You do not want this to happen.

Irritability and uptightness can weaken the Gall Bladder in the spring.

The Liver stores large quantities of blood, minerals, and vitamins. The liver produces the bile salts which are distributed by the gall bladder into the small intestine to absorb fats from the food that we eat. The liver also stores all the toxins, poisons, chemicals, and drugs that the body takes in. The liver then breaks down poi-

sons chemically into less toxic compounds that can be easily eliminated. Toxins stay in the liver a long time. If the amount of toxins becomes too high gallstones can develop. Anger and frustration can weaken the liver in the spring.

There are many ways to start a spring detox strategy an amazingly easy and inexpensive way is to drink a glass of lukewarm water with lemon every morning. A few benefits that can come from a daily practice of drinking a glass of lukewarm water with lemon are detoxification of the liver, aids digestion, helps to balance pH levels, stimulation of nerve and brain functions, relief from respiratory issues, and weight loss.

This will allow for more time in the Sun. Vitamin D is an important natural defense tool against any type of virus, your bodies vitamin D level should be in the 80 to 100% range and for extra protection increase your intake of Zink.

he pandemic lockdown has lasted a little over a year, yet it feels like it’s been forever; no traveling, no in-person socializing, no eating out, no music or live shows, no museums or galleries. No, no, no…

YES is slowly coming back and we are excited.

Even though we can’t travel, we can go on a Harlem staycation; going on local trips; and leaning about Harlem neighborhoods and communities. There are many historic sights, history, food and entertainment to experience in beautiful Harlem.

Some you may want to discover or revisit.In upcoming articles I will be making suggestions for your staycation. Happy trails !

This week consider visiting Harlem Meer and Hotel Fane: Harlem Meer

Harlem Meer is the northern end of Central Park, located on West 110 Street, east of Fifth Avenue. It covers 11 acres. It was named after the Dutch city Haarlem and Meer is Dutch for Lake.

It has an area of high ground that was used as a lookout sight during The War of 1812. There remains a cannon on that spot, but it was never used in the war.

The Dana Discovery Center is at 110 Street. In the summer, they host music concerts. In the fall, they host a Halloween event. And in the winter, they host a wonderful Christmas celebration.

You can fish in the pond, but you must throw the fish back.

Further down Fifth Avenue at 103 Street is the Conservancy Garden. The wrought iron entrance is from their mansion on west 57 Street, next to the Plaza Hotel, was donated by the Vanderbilt family. Inside there are three beautiful gardens, sculptures and a quiet place to reflect.

Hotel Fane We are standing on west 135 street in Central Harlem, between Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard and Frederick Douglass Boulevard.

We are looking at the former Hotel Duvan. It was built in 1912-13, by German stockbroker Gustav Sidenberg, whose wife the hotel is named after.

During the ‘20s, it was Hotel Dumas. The second floor had a private restaurant. The ground floor had a public restaurant that could seat 200. 3 cooks were hired. Everyday, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., Sam Green and his orchestra performed.

Hotel Dumas was listed in The Negro Motorist Green Book in the ‘20s; Along with eleven other hotels in Harlem.

In the ‘40s it became Hotel Fane. Black folks who visited Harlem stayed there.

The original awning and neon sign remain from when it became Hotel Fane, which makes them rare treasures to see. The front window awnings were removed.

And lastly, it became The Fane. A woman’s shelter. Presently it has undergone a renovation and is empty.

This is one of eight sites we visit, on my tour of this historic block. West 135 Street, The Harlem Walk of Fame.

id you just fall into the lap of luxury?

It might’ve seemed so. The bed was much nicer than yours, with a comforter like cotton candy. The carpet was sinkto-your-ankles thick. The bathroom, wow, and the view outside the window almost made you speechless. A room like that can make a vacation better. In “The Barbizon” by Paulina Bren, it could make a career.

When construction began on Manhattan’s Barbizon Hotel for Women in 1927, America was flush with possibility. World War I was over, prosperity was attainable, and the Nineteenth Amendment had recently been ratified, which had “poked holes in earlier

arguments for why” young, single women would eschew careers. And so the Barbizon was built specifically as a residential hotel for proper young (white) ladies to live while they spread their wings. No men allowed, basic rooms were $12 per week, maid service and amenities included.

Being affiliated with the Barbizon from its beginning, the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School housed its students at the hotel but once the Depression ended, the hotel’s average boarder had changed. “Katie Gibbs” students still lived in the Barbizon – with a housemother and a strict curfew – but other mid-to-late-1930s guests were just as likely to be models for a growing ad industry. Some ten years

later, advertising, clothing, beauty, Mademoiselle magazine, and the Barbizon all became linked through an annual Guest Editor contest, which brought fourteen (later, twenty) of the

country’s most intelligent young women to New York each summer, and housed them in the iconic hotel.

This, and the introductions to influential artists, writers, editors, and actors

opened eyes and changed lives until the program ended in 1979.

Despite the glamour that had lived at the Barbizon, though, not everything glittered. Black

women weren’t allowed at the hotel until 1956. Quietly, the Barbizon was the site of several suicides. A growing Women’s Movement began to make the hotel seem outdated. And yet, when the building was sold, and sold again, some of its longest residents refused to leave...

So you say that you love to read biographies. Generals, actors, scientists, politicians, add this to your list.

“The Barbizon” is a biography of a hotel.

And yet, a building is nothing but materials, so author Paulina Bren weaves concrete and glass with confidence and glitz, and Carols and Gaels. She opens her tale in a just-right manner, with money and a deliciously outrageous woman, proceeding then through decades of American fads and ideals, stretching from Dust Bowl to disco.

Admittedly, that pop-culture is fun, but the women who lived at the Barbizon and their tales are the raison d’etres here and so, with a dash of drama and a bit of period gossip, Bren shows readers the world through the tender eyes of thirty years’ worth of twenty-somethings. For anyone who recalls life at that age, such recollections are sweetly nostalgic, made better by frustrating, funny, heartbreaking updates that truly set this book apart.

They make it irresistibly readable, too. They’ll make you want to lap “The Barbizon” up.
