First, I must say thank you to Governor Cuomo for taking the trip to my home town, Savannah, Georgia, earlier this week. With the supplies he took and his advice to Mayor Johnson I am now feeling confident the COVID curve in that area will start going in the right direction and my family will be protected..

This past weekend we lost a civil rights icon – Congressman John Lewis. He was there fighting for civil rights in his 20’s with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 60’s and he was recently standing on the Street painted with the Slogan “Black Lives Matter” in Washington DC. He remained a constant fighter for civil rights until he took his last breath. (see page 12) Congratulations to Eugenia Foxwood as she was recently sworn in to serve as the 20212022 President of FIABCI-USA part of the The International Real Estate Federation and is the first African-American to serve in that position. (see page 7) I am celebrating 25 years publishing and will publish a special commemorative issue on August 20, 2020. What Happens After You Submit an Application?

After the deadline, applications are selected for review through a lottery process. Appointments are usually scheduled from 2 to 10 months after the application deadline. until its agenda is resolved.

The bird’s sharp beak is used like a chisel. Drumming is the term used to describe the woodpecker’s speedy blows on any solid surface, wood, or metal. It is done as a signal to claim its territory,

let it go. Sometimes, we are so fragmented in our plans that the focus needed cannot sustain the required maintenance. Like the woodpecker, we must be about conscientious steps taken to survive.

The woodpecker has one of the longest tongues amongst birds its size, measuring five to six inches covered with sticky hairs. Used to snatch insects, the tongue is launched and retracted with great efficiency. Our tongue can travel distances also, so to speak, spewing and extracting what it

needs.

It is unfair to harshly judge the woodpecker’s modem operandi. After all, like most of us, the bird does what it must do in a world that is not handing out favors.

As we think about the characteristics of the woodpecker, we should give thought to the part we allow others to participate in our own progress.

Do not let anyone “poke holes” in your dream.

Watch out for those who attach themselves to you with a hidden agenda of their own. Beloved,

the woodpecker may have to go. However, I advise you to be certain before you accuse, think deep and long. You may be the woodpecker!

n neighborhoods where two of the most persecuted peoples in all of history live side-by-side, harmony and mutual appreciation should be a given. The historic relations between the Orthodox Jewish Communities and African-American Communities of Brooklyn have admittedly fluctuated in this measure. However, while there have been reasons for strife on both sides, now is not the time for blame; rather it is the time for action.

Mutual understanding and appreciation is the first step in this process. As an Orthodox Hasidic Jew, Harriet Tubman is a relatable character that can act as the foundation of this understanding. Through the lens of a Moses like-character, to which she has often been likened by those in the African-American community, educational material and sessions in the Orthodox Community surrounding Harriet Tubman and slavery would be the optimal breaking-ground to begin such reconciliation programs.

As the bicentennial of Harriet Tubman’s birth approaches us in March 2022, it is an auspicious time to educate through her history to foment change for the greater good.

Luckily, Harriet Tubman’s heroic life is common knowledge for many Americans. “Many” is quite an accomplishment, but it is no where near enough. Harriet Tubman was born into an enslaved family and suffered horrendous abuse at the hands of her oppres-

sors. She escaped slavery at the age of 27 and returned to free not only her family but many others.

She was often likened to Moses by those in her community, highlighting their shared strives in freeing their peoples from the bonds of slavery.

Harriet Tubman herself is reported to have even invoked Moses’s name in song while leading her escaped brethren in the Underground Railroad. At the onset of the Civil War she began covert intelligence operations for the Union, connecting with slaves in order to reveal Confederate war plans. In the heat of war in 1863, she led the Combahee Ferry Raid in which she successfully liberated over 700 slaves. This is recorded as the first American military operation led by a woman, foreshadowing her dedication to the Suffragette Movement.

Hate is the deformed byproduct of ignorance. To ensure our joint communal safety and prosperity we must educate ourselves on the struggles our neighbors have encountered. There is no better way to learn than to relate the new information to information close to our communal heart and deeply ingrained in communal memory. For this reason, we in the Jewish Community must fulfill our obligation to learn about and love our quite literal neighbors through a figure our community can easily understand: Harriet Tubman.

The time has come when we must educate the Yiddish speaking populations and the Jewish community at-large of the trials and tribulations our African-American

neighbors have endured. We must produce adequate Yiddish and English language materials in order to do so: an unprecedented project of societal acquaintance. Learning her history should not only be completed in order to fulfill an American History requirement.

Additionally, Harriet Tubman was a religious woman. She appreciated the values and lessons of the Bible and used them as inspiration for her actions. This makes her an even more relatable individual to our community. In fact, she is so highly revered by her community that she is often also likened to Miriam the prophetess. The African-American community has compared her leadership of slaves to freedom in song as Miriam led the Israelites from Egyptian slavery to freedom in song. Historians point to evidence of Harriet’s religious upbringing influencing her so deeply as to compel her to act, risking her life in the name of her people and G-D. Her story may not only serve as inspiration for how to treat our fellow humans who may not look as we do, but also as how we should truly be inspired by our beliefs and morals to the point of full devotion to improving what we can in this world.

While I frame this call to action in a format tailored for the Jewish community, it should prove as a foundational structure required in many of our diverse communities in New York City and across the nation. Harriet Tubman is such an ideal role-model because of her bravery choosing to re-enter hostile territory to save others de-

spite the risk of enduring more of the same tremendous suffering she experienced in her youth.

Many of numerous communities in New York City were built and flourished by the hands of heroes who too overcame terrible suffering to save the lives of others and build the vital community infrastructures that allow us all to live our current lifestyles.

Ultimately, while understanding and appreciating the struggles and accomplishments of our neighbors is exceedingly important, achieving an in-depth understanding of the history of this nation (of which we are certainly a part) and its implications on modern life is the end goal.

As we grapple with the racial tensions plaguing our nation and as we desire a better solution than simply allowing the status quo to endure, it is vital we do our part in manifesting a better world absent of such hate. As humans our reaction to our fellow human’s yearning for equality and yearning for justice should resound within us. As Americans who inherit a beautiful nation designed to pursue justice, this should not just resound within us, it should push us to action.

As many anecdotes about New York City go, if you can make it here you can make it anywhere.

Let us make an example in Brooklyn, an example for the world of how to treat our fellow humans.

IN MEMORIAM: The World Mourns A True Icon and Freedom Fighter – John Lewis 1940-2020

omewhere it’s raining. Somewhere the heavens have opened up, reflecting the tears that are falling across the globe as news of the death of civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) spreads.

The legislator, freedom fighter and justice warrior, who was famously beaten, bloodied and arrested in Selma, Alabama — and in other cities across the Jim Crow South — during the struggle for civil rights and racial equality, was 80. . “The Honorable John Lewis was a longtime master freedom fighter who set the eternal example of how and why we all should fight for the freedom and equality of all humanity,” President of NNPA Ben Chavis remarked.

“May Lewis now have his

rest in peace. As for those of us who worked with him and [those] who marched with him, we must keep fighting for freedom and equality with renewed vigor, courage and energy. Black Lives Matter.”

“Very few people could have been harassed, arrested more than 40 times, beaten within inches of their lives, and still espouse Dr. King and Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings of nonviolence, peace, and love. However, these principles were core philosophies to John Lewis, and our nation is forever indebted to him for his humble sacrifices,” Congresswoman Maxine Waters

of California stated., "Lewis was the last surviving speaker from the famed 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The world also will remember Lewis for leading hundreds of people in one of the most famous demonstrations for civil rights ever – Bloody Sunday.

In the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd, Lewis praised this generation of freedom fighters. “This feels and looks so different,” he said of the Black Lives Matter movement and other ongoing demonstrations. “It is so much more massive and all-inclusive. There will be no turning back.”

Lewis announced late last year that he had Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. However, stalwart in his resolve to fight until the end, he refused to quit the struggle. “I have been

in some kind of fight — for freedom, equality, basic human rights — for nearly my entire life,” he said, “I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now.”

“So, I have decided to do what I know to do and do what I have always done: I am going to fight it and keep fighting for the Beloved Community. We still have many bridges to cross,” Lewis said during one Sunday in late December of 2019.

Dr. King once said that, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” In words, deeds, actions, thoughts, influence, practice, and conscience John Lewis was rarely silent about the things that matter. For this reason, and for so many others, his legacy will remain alive forever.

arlier this week NY Political leaders met on Adam Clayton Powell Blvd between 125th Street to 127th Streets painted “Black Lives Matter” to pay tribute to Congressman John Lewis.

A New Virtual Reality

he term virtual reality has taken a new meaning due to COVID-19.

Meetings, conferences, and schooling have become virtual.

Online communication and interactions have reached a new normal.

Twenty years ago, I hosted one of the first major community technology conferences in Harlem during Black History month. I was the director of the City College Office of Urban

Affairs and in collaboration with Libraries for the Future, Columbia University and The Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers.

Teach Harlem II was the title of the two-day conference that invited educators grant writers, local businesses, civic organizations, and members of the community. The conference focused on how information technology would change life in the future. My opening statement focused on how the digital divide would be the greatest form of discrimination in the 21st century.

Teach Harlem I was held at the opening of one of the first community computer training centers, located in the Minisink Townhouse community center in 1998. The conference and training center was sponsored by a partnership between

City College and Columbia University through a United States H.U.D. community partnership grant.

Twenty-two years ago, access to information technology was viewed as a luxury by many. Today, it has become a necessity. When schools closed a few months ago, hundreds of young people could not be educated because they did not have the tools for virtual learning. In many cases, you could not talk to your doctor or take part in religious services without access to the internet.

Meetings and conferences have now started to use virtual platforms like Zoom, MegaMeeting, and Microsoft Teams.

My weekly WHCR.90.3 FM Urbanology talk show is now broadcasted live on the Soul City TV using virtual platforms.

The annual Harlem Holistic Wellness Week festival was virtual and can still be viewed at www.h2w.nyc. The annual Father’s Day skyscraper Cycling Classic was also virtual this year. HARLEM WEEK and the Harlem Music Festival (August 16th -23rd) will be virtual. Soul City TV will broadcast a virtual four-day (August 24th – 27th) celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 1st Harlem Renaissance as a continuum to the Harlem Music Festival.

The four day virtual Soul City event will include a National Economic Summit on 7/24, a poetry special on 7/25, a comedy special on 7/26, and a

This, however, does not benefit those who lack access to the internet amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The technology committee of Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) chaired

by Clayton Banks (co-founder of Silicon Harlem), has provided internet access and computers to over 100 students.

GHCC in partnership with educational institutions, community-based organizations, and both public and private sector organizations, will continue to collect and

refurbish computers to be distributed to those in need.

Fortunately, the new concept of virtual reality is not all bad. The April CODE 420 cannabis conference had over 5,000 live viewers and is still on the CODE 420 Facebook page. This year’s Harlem Holistic Wellness Week had over 40,000 viewers and continues to be viewed today. I am sure that this year, the virtual HARLEM WEEK will have thousands of new viewers from around the world watching the annual Harlem event.

The new Onuwon Wellness Group website (www.onuwon. com) will soon have virtual meditation and energy training classes. Many other wellness organizations are developing virtual classes as well. The digital divide is still too wide, and many will not be able to participate in this new virtual reality.

ou can’t.

That’s what everybody says to you, all the time. You can’t ride your bike anywhere but the driveway. You can’t go to the store by yourself or go to bed whenever you want.

So many things you can’t do but in “The Magical Yet” by Angela DiTerlizzi, illustrated by Lorena Alvarez, maybe it’s not quite the right time.

Some days, nothing goes right. You try and try to do something that everybody else in the whole world seems to be able to do and.... you can’t.

So depressing. So sad. It makes you just want to quit. You’re never going to do that again. You won’t even try. “No way. Not never.”

But wait a minute.

There’s this “major game changer – a most amazing thought re-arrange-er” that you have, and you don’t even know it.

You have “The Magical Yet!” When you were a baby, you went from drooling to talking to walking, all because of the “Yet’s magic.”

You learned to dress yourself because the Yet was with you. You learned to help Mom and Dad, to draw pictures, to play ball and

And that’s what you’ll be doing, so beware: 4-to-8-year-olds will surely be able to muster the patience to want this book on repeat. With a tale like “The Magical Yet,” your child can’t resist.
