Prior to publishing I was a media director in the advertising industry. My job was to develop plans and execution as to which media vehicles would be used to deliver the client’s advertising message. During my tenure in advertising I had been directed by clients and agency account directors at times not to place any ads on black radio stations. In other words the clients made it clear they did not want to increase the traffic of Black people buying their products and services. I also had the opportunity to work with some major corporations such as Anheuser Bush, General Motors, General Foods and Proctor and Gamble who employed black advertising agencies to ensure their advertising messages were included on black radio stations and black publications. They hired the black agencies because they major white agencies they employed did not include the utilization of blackowned media in their plans for the most part.

The Road to Racial Justice Runs Through Tulsa America needs to reckon with its racism through concrete action on this Juneteenth.

ne of the big problems with President Donald Trump’s nostalgic view of the country’s history — “Make America Great Again” — is that it has always winked at the ghost of Jim Crow. Nowhere does that ghost haunt the promise of the American Dream more vividly than the city where Trump held his re-election campaign rally on June 20th in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Last month, as the country was engulfed in protests against racism, President Trump announced that he would stage his first live campaign rally since the start of the coronavirus pandemic on, of all days, Juneteenth. The annual celebration of Juneteenth marks the date (June 19, 1865) when word finally reached Texas that slavery was abolished and slaves were, at long last, free. The president announced the rally on the same day he made a show of rejecting a public demand — supported by a growing group of military leaders — to rename military bases that still honor Confederate generals. This was just a few days after he had echoed rhetoric employed in the 1960s by former Alabama Governor George Wallace and Southern sheriffs.

After an eruption of public outrage, the Trump campaign pushed the rally back a day. But by holding it in Tulsa, the president is visiting a city whose history reveals how important the national uprising against racism is — and how urgently we need to reckon with it through concrete action.

Ninety-nine years ago this month, White residents of Tulsa massacred more than 200 Black residents and destroyed — looting, burning and ransacking — the thriving middle-class Black neighborhood of Greenwood.

It was one of the ugliest chapters in American history, yet it remained buried — hardly spoken of — until recent years. And it was far from an isolated event.

Tragically for Black America, and our whole country, the wreckage and ruins of Greenwood are a symbol of how the end of the Civil War was followed by generations of legalized and systemic oppression and theft, north and south: of Black labor, Black homes, Black farms, Black businesses, Black wealth, Black freedom and, too often, Black lives. As a result, the typical Black family today has one-tenth the wealth of typical White families — a statistic that is nothing short of a national disgrace.

In Tulsa, city leaders have come together to commemorate the 1921 massacre and engage in public education and dialogue around it. Although President Trump never seems to talk about Greenwood, he could start

on June 20th by telling his audience about the looting of

wood, if he mentions it at all, as a prop to repeat his absurd claim that he has “done more for the Black community than any president since Abraham Lincoln.” And so while Trump flew in and out of Tulsa on June 20th, the rest of us need to keep talking about what Greenwood represents to our nation — and start confronting it more directly and forcefully.

I came face to face with Greenwood’s history when

developing an ambitious plan for increasing Black wealth and prosperity, I made a return visit to the Greenwood Cultural Center to announce what we called, the Greenwood Initiative. Our goals were to triple Black wealth, double the number of Blackowned businesses and increase the number of Black homeowners by 1 million.

In my speech, some people were surprised to hear me say that I would not have had the success I’ve enjoyed if I were Black — but it’s true.

And it bothers me a great deal, because it runs counter

Black homes in Greenwood and what it cost Black families. He could discuss why no White people ever went to prison — while hundreds of Black residents were arrested.

He could explain how these kinds of injustices went on in communities across America for decades upon decades — and how their legacy is still felt by Black families.

Sadly, President Trump is more likely to use Green-

our foundation awarded Tulsa a grant to stage a public art project raising awareness about it. Listening to local leaders at the Greenwood Cultural Center was a powerful learning experience — all the more so because, like nearly all Americans, I was never taught about it in school. It has been whitewashed from history books.

A year later, when my campaign for president was

to everything I was taught about America — and everything I want America to be.

But we cannot wish true equality into existence. We cannot pretend that time will heal old wounds. Healing begins with justice. Justice requires admitting wrongs — not hiding from them, or excusing them, or rationalizing them — and acting in good faith to right them. That is what we must do.

When my campaign ended in March, I was not willing to walk away from the principles behind our Greenwood Initiative. They are too important.

And so Bloomberg Philanthropies hired campaign staff members who developed the initiative to explore ways we could bring some of its ideas to life through our foundation. We are focusing on three main areas where racial equity is so lacking: financial equity, including housing and small-business ownership; social equity, including access to quality and affordable education, and strengthening historically Black colleges and universities; and civic equity, including voter rights and access to the ballot.

Our work developing the Greenwood Initiative is continuing, with the help of Black leaders in every sector, and we are now more resolved — and optimistic — than ever. The uprising that has happened in communities across the country has been a powerful testament to just how hungry Americans of all colors are for leadership on issues of racial justice and equality. Change can’t wait for the next president and Congress.

So even as Trump straps his political life to the backs of Confederates and segregationists, something good can come of his visit to Tulsa — if more Americans talk about Greenwood and the injustices it represents, and if we turn that dialogue into concrete actions in our own lives and communities, including exercising our power at the voting booth.

That’s the path we must walk, together, to finally redeem the true promise of Juneteenth.

ncumbent Assemblyman Walter Mosley (Fort Green, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights) won in a district that overlaps with the senate district.

According to the unofficial results Mosley received 7,301 votes (52.36%) to Forrest’s 6,606 (47.37%).

“I’m honored to win and have both the Democratic Party and Working Families Party line in the general election.

We’ve accomplished a lot in strengthening tenant laws and dealing with the issue of police misconduct and we have more to do,” said Mosley. “I look forward to continuing the dialogue with those who voted for me, but more importantly with the people

The upstart Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) continued to show their muscle in Brooklyn tonight

as Jabari Brisport appears to have enough votes to overcome and mail-in ballot votes to win the Democratic primary for the 25th District state senate seat.

This hardly mattered, though, as she soundly beat Hamilton in getting over 71% percent of the vote (8,570) to Hamilton’s 3,447 votes.

inety nine years ago this month, a murderous, racist mob looted and torched Black Wall Street, decimating Tulsa’s once thriving African-American business district.

Known as “Little Africa,” the city’s Greenwood neighborhood was replete with its own banks, movie theaters, restaurants, hotels, clothing boutiques - and not to mention upscale homes.

This orgy of violence against black people began with what historians said was an innocuous interaction between a young white female elevator operator and a Black shoe shiner. But this was 1921, and a racially charged account of the incident that appeared in the Tulsa Tribune accusing the man of trying to rape the woman would prove deadly.

Historians have argued that the looters relished the opportunity to use the rape claims as a ruse to cut Greenwood’s Black people down to size; to upend generations of community prosperity and show the “uppity” Black business owners who was boss.

Official records put the death toll at 36, but recent estimates put the number of dead closer to 300, along with some 800 injured. More than 8,000 Greenwood residents were left homeless, and the 35 blocks that once made up Black Wall Street 6

were left in charred ruin. The mob not only murdered with impunity, but the looting and burning of businesses meant that they killed Black livelihoods as well.

Tulsa’s Black community was forced to rebuild with no help from local, state or federal authorities. The area’s Black owned business owners never again were able to reclaim their previous level of prominence.

This Juneteenth, we at the Black Business Empowerment Commission (BBECommission), a national organization focused on the economic health of the Black community, will launch an initiative to prevent another systematic decimation of Black businesses across America.

Due to a lack of access to capital, business networks and public and private procurement opportunities, Black businesses were already in a vulnerable position before the coronavirus pandemic. The coronavirus pandemic on top of the American pandemic of racism has left Black business all across America in a state of crisis.

The story of Tulsa’s ‘Black Wall Street’ is well documented. The truth is there were a host of Black

Wall Streets across America, and many met the same fate.

The Hayti Community in Durham, NC, Jackson Ward in Richmond, VA, the Fourth Avenue District in Birmingham, AL and Boley, OK are just a few.

We celebrate and remember all of our Black Wall Streets because when Black businesses thrive, the entire community is uplifted through job creation, a broader tax base and dollars being circulated within the neighborhood. And the next generation sees that entrepreneurship is a vehicle for Black economic empowerment and generational wealth. We are calling on federal, state and local governments to tangibly address the economic concerns of the Black community - something it has failed to do for more than 400 years.

At its core, our plan for Black economic empowerment includes sole source public contracts administered by Black-operated and controlled entities with deep ties to the community. These sole source contracts would enable Black businesses to engage in substantive public and private sector contracts, access capital, culturally sensitive and competent technical assistance, back office

support and workforce development.

Most importantly, sole source contracts will allow the Black community to exercise “PHD”- the purchasing, hiring and depositing of the Black dollar within a Black-owned and operated economic ecosystem.

In the wake of George Floyd’s tragic death in police custody and the protests and unrest that have followed, the Black community does not have the luxury of fighting for social justice while ignoring economic justice for Black people.

Let’s be clear: we cannot talk in general terms about diversity and inclusion, minorities and people of color because it mostly benefits white women and others.

Black does not equal small business. Black does not equal diversity. Black does not equal minority. Black equals Black, and we urge the government at all levels to partner with us to remedy centuries of economic devastation in the Black community!

Students Emerge as Leaders During COVID-19 Through Service Learning (Statepoint)

s learning has gone virtual to curb the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, educators and parents have been left with a pressing concern: how will this experience impact social and emotional development?

“The pandemic is having profound effects on children’s mental well-being, their social development, their safety, their privacy, their economic security and beyond,” a policy brief by the United Nations stated. “While children are not the face of this pandemic, its broader impacts on children risk being catastrophic and amongst the most lasting consequences for societies as a whole.”

While maintaining progress in core subject areas is imperative, a curriculum that develops leadership skills

is equally essential to ensure that emotional development continues virtually.

An independent research study commissioned by Lead4Change found that students who completed the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program experienced tangible emotional growth. The program involves lessons in leadership, as well as

creating and implementing team projects to meet a need in the community. Those that completed the program experienced significant changes in leadership skills (60 percent of students improved), respect for others (54 percent) and ambition and innovation (53 percent).

Programs of this nature can be completed virtually by adapting projects to ad-

dress current concerns, and they can not only succeed without physical contact, but offer unique challenges that help students to grow as leaders.

Students at Mohave High School in Bullhead City, Ariz. reconsidered their project when quarantine began, creating a readaloud library of developmentally appropriate books for preschoolers.

With high schoolers reading preschoolers books and teaching them literacy and social development skills, this resource allowed an early childhood program to continue virtually.

“The students developed a ‘can do attitude’ while working collaboratively to adapt to their new normal,” said teacher, Michele Leyendecker. “With so much uncertainty, this project truly gave them purpose.”

team was awarded Lead4Change’s grand prize, a $10,000 grant for a nonprofit of their choice.

In Garner, N.C., students participated in service learning and emerged as community leaders by directly addressing the local impact of the pandemic. The “Corona Relief Crew” collaborated with volunteers and vendors to create and distribute kits with essential food and supplies for the homeless and those in nursing homes who have been severely impacted by the pandemic.

“Being an adult leader for the Corona Relief Crew has caused a paradigm shift in how I view youth strength and their ability to lead,” educator Dr. Cleopatra Lacewell shared. “This experience has taught me when students have well-organized plans, identified goals

and established team structures, they can then perform as stellar leaders with minimum support.”

The Corona Relief Crew was also honored with Lead4Change’s $10,000 grand prize for their initiative. For more information about the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program, visit lead4change.org.

While distance learning’s impact on students’ education has been unprecedented, this disruption also has presented a unique opportunity for students to overcome obstacles and grow as leaders.

With a service-learning project, students can gain a sense of purpose, lead real change in their local community and maintain a sense of unity that is integral during challenging times.

The Economics of Racism in American Culture

E

conomics has always been the foundation of the culture of racism in America. It is likely that those reading this dialog have been socially programmed to see racism as a social issue rather than an economic tool. Hundreds of years of free labor built the American capitalist system using both African and European slaves.

The terms “black” and

“white” were used to keep African and European slaves from overcoming slavery; an issue that was becoming a problem as there were many reported black and white slave rebellions. Before the mid to late 1700’s, Africans did not consider themselves to be “black” while Europeans did not consider themselves to be “white.” These terms were created to separate the two groups and create a culture of white supremacy: another economic tool.

The term “negro” was used by the Portuguese soon after arriving in Southern Africa in 1442 in hopes of finding a sea route to India. “Negro” means black in Portuguese and Spanish.

Old maps labelled West African areas that stretched

along the Niger River as Negroland, which also led to the term.

The term “Caucasian” was introduced by Christoph Meiners in 1785. It was used to describe the people of the Caucasus region in Europe near Russia. Later, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, also known as the father of anthropology, used the term to identify those of European ancestry. However, most Russians still do not consider themselves to be Caucasians.

It was deemed necessary to separate the African slaves from their African heritage.

As a result, their culture, language, and religion were taken away. It was soon considered a crime to read or gather in groups other than religious services. Africans

were taught broken English by their poor white overseers. The African slaves were then dehumanized to justify their mistreatment.

The dehumanization of Africans continued even after the abolition of slavery.

To maintain free labor, Jim Crow laws became legal which enforced and promoted white supremacy. This was to justify the limitation of economic progress of not only Africans, but for poor Europeans as well.

“If you can convince the lowest white man he is better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. “Hell give him somebody to look down on and he’ll empty his pocket for you.” This statement was made by President Lyndon Johnson when

discussing how racism is a political and economic problem for both black and many whites.

The Black Lives Matter Movement has opened the door for a dialog between Americans of African descent and Americans of European descent. However, subconscious ideas of white superiority and black inferiority remain as a part of American culture. Unless these difficult conversations focus on the social programming of race, I cannot be convinced that any dramatic change can take place.

Those of African descent must learn and accept who they are as Africans, those of European descent must do the same before we can truly address and change the economically driven factors

of racism. The American founding fathers were slave owners and Africans were never considered equal or American in the writing of the United States Constitution. This unfair concept still exists and is justified by continuing to dehumanize people of African descent.

I am not sure if I will live to see a full deprogramming of the racist social culture and the dehumanization of Africans for economic reasons. Nonetheless, I am happy to see that young people are now exploring the possibility. “The Rules of Racism” is the 3rd DVD in the Hidden Colors series (www.hiddencolors.com).

ou can teach a bird to sing along with your favorite

songs.

Dogs love to learn new tricks, if you’ve got the patience; cats, too, but that might take longer. If you’ve got a pet pony, you can do all kinds of things together, and even a gerbil or hamster is fun to play with. If you’ve got an aquarium, though, there’s not a whole lot of snuggling going on, and you can’t walk a guppy or throw a ball for it.

Still, when people ask you why you love your fish, you know the answer.

In “Bubble Kisses” by Va-

nessa Williams, illustrated by Tara Nicole Whitaker, you’ll know you’re not alone.

Oh, how she loved her pet!

Other kids had dogs that WOOFed and cats that scratched. They had frogs and guinea pigs or hamsters or ponies. Other kids had regular kinds of pets, but this little girl had special pet: she had a goldfish named Sal. The thing was, Sal

wasn’t just a fish. She was a “pal.”

Now, you might think a fish is not nearly as much fun as a puppy or a kitten.

You might think that you can’t play with a fish. A goldfish isn’t like a bird or a deer that you watch from your window but that was okay. The girl and Sal had fun, especially when they played “lots of games together,” although mostly pretend ones.

But the biggest reason she loved Sal, though, was because Sal gave the girl “bubble kisses as she swims... in the water.”

Sometimes in her dreams, the little girl swam like a mermaid with Sal, and they visited other mermaids for those “delicious” bubble

kisses. She thought it was sad that from other “people’s lives such things are missing,” but she was lucky.

She had Sal, right by her bedside. All night long...

There is one very important thing parents need to know about “Bubble Kisses,” and it’s in two parts: as a book, this is really a no-go. It’s repetitive and not very interesting to read. But as a book-with-accompanying CD, it’s stellar and your preschooler will adore it.

Indeed, this book itself is mostly a vehicle for author Vanessa Williams’ song, which follows the words in this book identically – meaning, basically, that when your child re-

quests it, you’ll be required to read song lyrics aloud.

might make you want to call it a day and head for the shower.

But then, breathe deep and remember that you’re not a 2-year-old. Williams’ words are perfect for silly-singing, and the bouncy, light, super-memorable song is one your toddler will warble everywhere, all the time. With book-inhand – and it’ll be in their hands often – kids can sing and follow along as you both admire the adorable artwork by Tara Nicole Whitaker.

Just beware that this isn’t a one-and-done book.

It’s going to be repeatedly requested and you might get an earworm from it.

Still, just one round of “Bubble Kisses” and your toddler-to-preschooler will sing its praises.
