diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast cancer and had to undergo 16 weeks of Chemo then surgery in June. In July I was told cells from my surgery showed I was cancer-free. I have spent the last year and a half with many “Hallelujah moments.” I have been so thankful to just be alive and cancer-free that I felt guilty talking about the aches and pains I suffered as a result of the chemo and also the fact that I am diabetic. I suffered for months with pains in my feet as I have neuropathy in my hands and feet. Often I would not attend events or go out of the house because it was painful to wear shoes for more than an hour. Finally a few weeks ago my holistic practioner, cousin, Laura Rogers asked how I was doing and I told her of my pains. She told me to go to Whole Foods and get some pelets called Hepercum and take 3 under my tongue and 3 in a basin with water and olive oil then soak my feet. I did this and in a few hours the pain was gone. A couple more days of the same and I am going to testify that I can now wear shoes all day and have had no further pain. If I feel some pain coming I just use the herpercum. Something so simple has changed my life. This was my holiday gift. Thank you Laura. So I look toward the new year optimistic about getting my life back and going to the gym. For those of you with similar pain I offer you this solution and for oth-

Burke started Just Be Inc., a nonprofit organization that helps victims of sexual harassment and assault, in 2003, after hearing a young girl’s sexual assault story. Realizing something profound was on the horizon, she gave the movement a name: Me Too. A decade later, Me Too is known worldwide – partly because actress Alissa Milano tweeted Me Too and encouraged other women and girls to share their sexual assault stories, but mostly because Burke, who is the senior director of the Brooklyn-based Girls For Gender Equity, spent the previous 10 years laying a solid foundation for her cause.

“I started Me Too to give young people, particular black girls, a safe space to share their stories. Me Too is a toolkit filled with the

words we use to talk about our sexual assault experiences. Words such as ‘rape culture,’ which tells girls it’s not their fault, were missing from the conversation before Me Too,” said Burke, who was named in 2017, with other influential female activists, as “the silence breakers” by Time magazine. “I’ve help change the conversation, which builds confidence and reassures self-esteem, which is the ultimate mission of Me Too.” While Burke received the Social Justice Award, the Metro-Manhattan (NY) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, along with American Airlines, presented the Harlem Champion Award to

the Woods Family of Sylvia’s restaurant.. American Airlines was the gala Champion Sponsor.

“The Metro-Manhattan (NY) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated serves the Harlem community. The proceeds from the gala will benefit Harlem. The Woods Family has been a pillar of the Harlem community since 1962, when Sylvia founded it, and has been a benefactor to many local families,” Hankin Cliette said.

Through the Sylvia & Herbert Woods Endowment Scholarship Fund, established in 2001, the Woods Family has provided over $400,000 to 130 students in

scholarship funding.

“We couldn’t be a good neighbor in Harlem by just providing food. Our commitment needed to be long lasting, which is why we established the scholarship foundation,” said Kenneth Woods of the Woods Family. “The Harlem community has been so generous to our family; we are simply paying it forward.”

The Metro-Manhattan (NY) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is a local chapter of The Links, Incorporated, an international notfor-profit organization that was established in 1946 and consists of over 15,000 professional women of color in 288 chapters. As one of

the country’s oldest service organizations dedicated to enriching, sustaining and supporting the economic and cultural survival of African-American communities, The Links, Incorporated represents an influential network of women committed to community service. The Metro-Manhattan (NY) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, which was chartered on April 23 1988, focuses on carrying out the mission of its national organization through programs that substantially impact the lives of children and families within the Harlem community

Burke received the award earlier this month at the Metro Manhattan (NY) Links 12th Biennial Holiday Gala before more than 800 guests at Cipriani Wall Street.

Burke has worked at the intersection of sexual violence and racial justice. Fueled by commitments to interrupt sexual violence and other systemic inequalities disproportionately impacting marginalized people, particularly black women and girls, Burke has created and led various campaigns focused on increasing access to resources and support for impacted communities, including the Me Too movement, which to date has galvanized millions of survivors and allies around the world.

“For so long the voices of women and girls, especially those who are black and brown, who are survivors of sexual violence, have been silenced. That changed when Tarana provided a platform for them to speak. Tarana’s Me Too movement shifts the focus to where it belongs— on the survivors,” said Dawn Hankin Cliette, president of the Metro-Manhattan (NY) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. “Tarana’s Me Too mission is aligned with the work that we do in our chapter, which, in turn, is aligned with the work that we do in our national organization— to enrich, sustain and support the cultural sur-

Congresswoman Maxine Waters: First Woman and First African American to Chair House Committee

ne day after saying she wants President Donald Trump’s new chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, to testify before her committee about his work overhauling the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA 43) was elevated to another position where she will undoubtedly continue to hold President Trump and his administration accountable.

Waters, the fiery and outspoken California Democrat whom Millennials have adopted as “Auntie Maxine,” was named by the Democratic Caucus to serve as the first woman and the first African American chair of the House Financial Services Committee.

“I am honored to have been selected by my colleagues to be the first Chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee in the 116th Congress.

“Since 1995, I have served as Ranking Member or Chairwoman of every Subcommittee under the Committee’s jurisdiction, taking on important issues on behalf of consumers, investors, and vulnerable populations,” Waters said.

“As Chairwoman, I will continue to prioritize protecting consumers and investors from abusive financial practices, making sure there are strong safeguards in place to prevent another financial crisis, expanding and supporting affordable housing opportunities, tackling the homelessness crisis, encouraging responsible innovation in

financial technology, promoting diversity and inclusion in the financial services sector, conducting appropriate oversight and ensuring that hardworking Americans and small businesses have fair access to the financial system and opportunities to thrive,” she said.

As such, Waters has summoned Mulvaney as a review begins of the CFPB. “I am writing to inform you that while your time running the Consumer Bureau may be over, the time for accountability for your actions is about to begin,” Waters said in a letter to Mulvaney, who is also the director of the administration’s Office of Management and Budget.

Mulvaney served as the CFPB’s acting director for one year and had previously charged that the agency overreached its statutory authority under the administration of former President

Barack Obama and it ignored several rules and ceased enforcement efforts.

In her letter, Waters accused Mulvaney of pursuing actions “harmful to consumers” and said she plans to review them.

“I consider it a privilege to hold the Chairwoman’s gavel and look forward to working with my fellow Democrats, Ranking Member McHenry and my colleagues across the aisle on commonsense solutions that benefit hardworking Americans and strengthen our economy,” said Waters, who has served as a Member of Congress and the Financial Services Committee since 1991.

Throughout her decades of public service, Waters has gained a reputation as a fearless and outspoken advocate for women, children, people of color and the poor.

In her various leadership roles on the House Financial Ser-

vices Committee, she has fought for the protection of consumers, investors, small businesses and vulnerable populations.

In a news release, Waters’ camp noted that in 2010, she and her Democratic colleagues worked tirelessly to pass the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, landmark legislation to prevent another financial crisis, which created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an agency dedicated to protecting America’s consumers from financial abuses.

She also was one of 10 Committee Members to be selected to serve as a conferee on the DoddFrank Act. A central driver of the crisis was predatory mortgage lending, which intentionally targeted minority communities with toxic products and resulted in devastating foreclosures across the country and an immense loss of

generational wealth.

Democrats specifically designed Dodd-Frank and the Consumer Bureau to prevent the harmful practices that caused the financial crisis.

The Bureau protects consumers from predatory and abusive financial practices in areas such as mortgage loans, private education loans, and payday loans.

Waters said despite Republican efforts to destroy the Consumer Bureau, she has fought to make sure “it is not impeded from its important work cracking down on industries that have a history of harming consumers, including debt collectors, payday lenders and consumer reporting agencies.”

While she has always been outspoken in her efforts, the era of social media has allowed for her longstanding efforts to be shared with millennials who have dubbed Waters as “Auntie Maxine.”

“Thanks to Borough President Adams’ investment, Met Council will be able to help house the most vulnerable New Yorkers,” said David G. Greenfield, CEO of Met Council.

“This allocation will allow the 75 residents of Met Council’s Abraham I, who have formerly experienced homelessness, to

continue to reside in beautiful accommodations in Sea Gate. We thank Borough President Adams for his leadership in ensuring the most vulnerable New Yorkers have quality housing in Brooklyn.”

Borough President Adams’s FY19 affordable housing capital budget also included $1 million to Love Fellowship Tabernacle for the construction of a 189-unit, mixed-use, 11-story building at 2435 Pacific Street in Brownsville; $526,000 to Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corporation for the construction of the communal and green roof spaces at Our Lady of Loreto Project Phase 2 in Brownsville, which will deliver 102 units of housing; $500,000 to the Hanson Place Church Support Corporation for the development of 100 affordable

housing units and a community facility space at Hanson Place Community Plaza in Fort Greene, and $500,000 to BEL Community Housing, LLC for the construction of 89 units of

low-income housing for seniors at Bishop Philius and Helen Nicolas Senior Residence in East Flatbush.

The projects are part of Borough President Adams’ groundbreaking FaithBased Development Initiative, which is working to partner with Brooklyn’s houses of worship to deliver affordable and supportive housing on available parcels of land across the borough. The initiative holds workshops with clergy and actively engages them in thinking how they can develop their assets the right way, particularly those houses of worship that have air rights or parking lots, where affordable housing can be developed.

“Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corporation is grateful for the support from Borough President Adams for the ability to

develop more than 135 affordable supportive senior housing units in the Ocean Hill-Brownsville area,” said Monsignor Alfred LoPinto, president and CEO at Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corporation. “A safe, affordable home is crucial to providing stability to the most vulnerable in our society.

The need for affordable supportive housing for seniors in New York City is overwhelming and must be addressed. It is our obligation to do whatever we can do to provide this type of housing for all New Yorkers in need, especially for seniors.”

esterday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams celebrated his Fiscal Year 2019 (FY19) capital budget allocation of $3,026,000 for affordable housing across the borough, supporting the development and maintenance of more than 550 new and existing units across Brooklyn.

The funding, which brings his affordable housing capital investment since the beginning of his administration to more than $20 million, includes grants to create and preserve low-income housing for seniors, formerly homeless individuals, and families, as well as to help develop community facility, communal, and green roof spaces. He made the announcement in Sea Gate at the site of Abraham Residence I, a 75-unit single room occupancy independent living facility for formerly homeless seniors 55 years of age and older.

The residence is managed

by Met Council, the country’s largest Jewish community organization providing support for those in need. Borough President Adams emphasized the importance of investing in affordable housing particularly for those struggling across the borough during the holiday season.

NAACP Holds #LivingWhileBlack Town Hall

housands joined NAACP President Derrick Johnson, Democratic New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, National Urban League President Marc Morial for #livingwhileblack, a candid conversation about the passage of the prison and sentencing reform bill and learning from this year’s elections.

Panelists also spoke about NAACP’s #LogOutFacebook protest, the shifting political climate, and the work ahead in 2019.

The NAACP led a digital protest dubbed #LogOutFacebook on Dec. 19thin response to the tech company’s history of data hacks which unfairly target users of color, NAACP officials said.

The organization also called on Congress to conduct further investigations on Facebook after a report

released for the Senate Intelligence Committee revealed that the Russian influence campaign “made an extraordinary effort to target African Americans.”

Over the last year, NAACP officials expressed concern regarding the numerous data breaches and privacy mishaps in which Facebook has been implicated. Since the onset of the Silicon Valley boom, the NAACP has been openly critical about the lack of employee diversity among the top technology firms in the country.

However, recent revelations that Facebook hired an opposition research firm combined with its work with other deeply partisan strategy firms, call into question the notion that Facebook operates with a nonpartisan view, Johnson said.

“Facebook’s engage-

ment with partisan firms, its targeting of political opponents, the spread of misinformation and the utilization of Facebook for propaganda promoting disingenuous portrayals of the African American community is reprehensible,” he said.

The NAACP has returned a donation it recently received from Facebook.

Johnson and others also used the Town Hall to discuss the effect the NAACP had on the 2018 midterm elections.

“The biggest takeaway from the NAACP’s post-midterm election poll is that without the black vote, we don’t win,” said NAACP Spokesman Malik Russell, whose comment was tweeted out by Johnson during the Town Hall.

“Through our civic engagement campaign, we increased [voter] turnout twice as much as we did in 2014,”

Johnson said. “This was a presidential level turnout.”

Morial spoke about the loss of wealth in the black community and the need to get it back. “We’ve lost 40 years of wealth, equity and homeownership as a community as a result of the Great Recession … we’re still burdened by the disproportionality of the credit system and the credit rating system, which negatively impacts African Americans,” Morial said.

Panelists noted that the while black homeownership fell from 47 percent to 41 percent after the recession (a number that reaches back to the levels of the 1970s), the current unemployment rate for African Americans is much higher than the national average.

“We still live in a nation where we call it the land of the free, but the incarceration rates disproportionately affect African Americans,” said Booker, who served as one of the keynote speakers at the Town Hall event.

Booker also lashed out at what he said was an unfair bail system that’s succeeded in keeping too many African Americans locked up. “We have in this nation what I call a debtor’s prison. People are wallowing in prison simply because they cannot afford to pay the bail cost,” Booker said.

n December 20, the Claremont Neighborhood Center at 489 East 169th Street transformed into a Christmas Wonderland providing a safe space for families in the community to enjoy holiday activities, a healthy meal and take home a Christmas gift. This free event was sponsored by Healthfirst in collaboration with City Council Member Vanessa Gibson.

Kids and adults came out in large numbers despite the rain and long lines to take part of the holiday celebration. Inside the community center there was face painting, balloon art, and a favorite tradition: pictures with Santa Claus.

The DJ spun holiday classics like ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ and every child left with one of the over one thousand presents that were distributed by volunteers.

But the best time to make a weight loss commitment is sooner rather than later, according to Dr. Pamela Peeke, chair of the Jenny Craig Science Advisory Board, who is sharing four good reasons to make a preNew Year’s resolution.
