HVAC Tips for Homeowners (Statepoint)

H

aving a home cooling system that is working optimally is crucial to keeping your family comfortable.

To ensure your air conditioner (AC) continues to function properly, here are some tips for your heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) units: • Replace air filters.

Ideally, homeowners should replace filters every three months (more often if you have pets) to ensure that air can flow efficiently. When air filters become clogged, your AC becomes less effective at lowering indoor temperatures. Additionally, prolonged use

of a dirty or clogged air filter can prevent enough return air from entering and can damage the system. Keeping them clean can also lower your energy consumption by up to 15 percent, ultimately saving you money on energy bills.

• Check your outdoor unit. Your outdoor unit’s ability to pull in air affects its efficiency. At least twice a month, check for weeds, debris, and potential obstructions. Keep vegetation at least two feet away from the unit.

• Pay attention to your thermostat. Inspect your thermostat to ensure that it is running properly. If you are leaving the house, turn the thermostat down, but do not turn your system off. It is a common mistake

for homeowners to think that turning it off will save them money, however, it costs more money because your system works much harder in order to completely re-heat or re-cool the entire house. Another common mistake is setting the thermostat to a very

• Inspect condensa-

tion lines. Your AC unit removes moisture as it runs, and sends that water through a drainage pipe. A clogged line will prevent it from running smoothly and could result in costly water damage. Bleach can be used to help prevent algae and mildew buildup.

• Schedule preventative maintenance. At least once a year, have an HVAC professional diagnose your unit to ensure it is running optimally. Technicians can check for damaged insulation around refrigerant lines or ducts with poor seals, all of which can cause your system to lose efficiency and increase your energy bill. A professional can also clean the AC unit by checking for and removing dirt or de-

bris that may clog filters and coils.

NAACP Observes 400th Anniversary of Slave Trade in Journey from Jamestown to Jamestown

n Sunday, August 18, the NAACP began a journey to honor African ancestors.

Members of the storied civil rights organization and numerous guests boarded a bus from Washington, D.C. Their initial destination was Jamestown, Virginia’s Colonial National Park, where they held a prayer vigil and candle lighting ceremony to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved

Africans.

The two-week-long observance included a Monday, August 19, visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture which was followed by a trip to Ghana, West Africa, and onto Jamestown – thus the organization’s theme: “Jamestown to Jamestown.”

“This is to honor the memory of all those stolen from Africa over 400 years ago,” NAACP President Derrick Johnson said.

“We honor the

strength and resilience of our ancestors,” Karen Boykin-Towns, vice chairman of the NAACP Board of Directors, wrote on Twitter.

“We must use the experience to guide our journey forward. Let’s become renewed in our fight for a democracy that is equal and just,” Boykin-Towns said.

During the trip, the NAACP will take part in an ancestral healing ceremony at an ocean, and members will attend a business and development summit.

NEW YORK FOUNDATION FOR SENIOR CITIZENS OFFERS INCENTIVES FOR HOSTS IN HOME SHARING PROGRAM

N

ew York Foundation for Senior Citizens’ (NYFSC) Home Sharing Program, a free service that matches hosts with an extra bedroom or space in their houses or apartments throughout all five boroughs with compatible guests looking for affordable housing, is now offering financial incentives (“Host Incentives”) to eligible hosts.

Financial incentives are available for eligible hosts whose monthly contribution requirements, which go toward household expenses, are greater than the potential guests’ available contribution amount. Based on eligibility, Host Incentives are available for up to $300 per month for a maximum of one year.

With its Home Sharing Program, NYFSC offers a free and innovative service which helps adults of all ages find safe and affordable places to live and provides a reliable source of income for participant hosts.

One of the sharemates must be age 60 or above.

“Host incentives make it possible to pair highly compatible individuals who otherwise might not have been possible to match due to a gap between monthly contributions hosts request and the amount their guests are able to afford,” said Linda Hoffman, President of the New York Foundation for Senior Citizens.

“Sharing your home with the right person, be it a college student or an older person, is the most import-

ant aspect of our program, and offering incentives makes it possible to match the most compatible sharemates regardless of a financial disparity.”

The Home Sharing Program has existed for almost 40 years and in that time has matched more than 5,000 hosts and guests with overwhelmingly positive results.

One recent Home Sharing participant had this to say, “I like the fact that I am helping my guest by sharing my home, while my guest is helping me to financially afford to maintain my home and adding companionship to my life.”

By: Makeda Viehweg he Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run, Health Walk, and Children’s Run on the early Saturday morning of August 24th at 135th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, was filled with moments of triumph, inspiration, and camaraderie.

The Percy Sutton Harlem 5K honors the legacy of the late Manhattan Borough President Percy Sutton, who was a supporter of the New York Road Runners.

The legacy race, which started a year after his passing in 2009, has grown in numbers.

“We started this run nine years ago with only 168 runners,” said the president and CEO of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce Lloyd Williams.

“Many people told us it didn’t make sense to have this run because no one would participate. Today we have close to 8,000 people registered, representing over 107 different countries.”

Approximately 4,843 people finished the 3.1 mile race, according to NYRR statistics.

The top three male finishers and finishing times were Daniel Winn in 15:13, Sean Grossman 15:35, and Gezahagn Girma Beyene 15:42; the top three female

Children as young as two years old, also got the chance to join the fun with their own race. “You’ll see competitiveness, tears, and a whole lot of fun,” an-

nounced the emcee. At the end of each race, each child received a participatory ribbon.

The Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run and Walk was the place to be to see runners young and old accomplish a great feat.

he National Association for the Advancement of Colored People -NAACP Mid-Manhattan Branch Civic Engagement Committee hosted its 1st Annual Back to School Backpack Giveaway at the Children’s Aid -Dunlevy Milbank Center on Saturday, August 24th.

The Civic Engagement Committee gave away hundreds of backpacks filled with school supplies.

In honor of NAACP Hip Hop Recognition Month, this year’s theme focused on building community through political awareness, mental, and physical health. They also conducted voter registrations and discussed the importance of the 2020 Census.

In 2018, at the NAACP National Convention Resolutions Plenary Session in San Antonio, Texas, the Delegates adopted annually “August Hip Hop Recognition Month.” It was resolved that the NAACP will build partnerships with their local Hip Hop entities and other members of the creative arts

How You Can Eliminate Food Waste (Statepoint)

large amount of food in the U.S. is never eaten. However, there are many easy ways families and communities can eliminate food waste in their daily lives, while also protecting the environment.

Each year, more than 66 trillion gallons of water is used to produce food that is estimated to be lost or wasted. Wasted food represents about 8 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions, according to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

More importantly, according to World Wildlife Fund (WWF), food production is the primary contributor to deforestation, forest degradation, and grassland conversion, harming wild-

life and the habitats they call home.

“Finding harmony between agriculture and nature may be the most important social, economic, and ecological issue of this century,” says Pete Pearson, WWF’s senior director of Food Loss and Waste.

Bringing people together from the hotel and kitchen sectors, retail and food service sectors, as

well as schools and farms, a report from WWF called “No Food Left Behind,” explores how to measure and reduce waste, from field to table. Food waste and loss is a huge environmental issue that everyone can do something about, in their homes and their communities. Use these tips from WWF to get started: Shop Smart The choices you make

at the supermarket matter.

Monitor what goes in and out of your fridge. Are you buying more than needed and chucking the rest into the garbage? Though great sources of nutrition, about 45 percent of all fruits, vegetables, roots and tubers are wasted, according to the FAO. Use the freezer!

Consider making a weekly meal plan that includes frozen meat, seafood, produce and canned products (especially in the off-season) so that you can shop with a realistic sense of what you actually need and not feel pressure from items spoiling. Still left with excess?

Compost, but work to reduce what goes in the compost bin!

It’s also important to shop for foods grown and raised sustainably. Look for eco-labels on packaging.

For example, sustainably caught seafood means the fishery is taking steps to reduce by-catch (fish caught unintentionally) which allows marine wildlife populations to thrive long-term.

When it comes to coffee, an eco-label might mean the product was sourced in an environmentally responsible way. Not seeing eco-labels at your store? Ask your grocer to consider stocking shelves with brands working to eliminate wasteful production practices.

Get Schools Involved Schools can do their part to teach kids the value of food by introducing strategies for reducing waste. WWF is working with students and teachers, grades 5-12 in cities nationwide, to conduct food waste audits, and build a connection between food,

wildlife and habitat conservation. The WWF Food Waste Warrior Toolkit is a free resource offering lesson plans integrating math, science and language arts that can be adjusted by grade level.

“Turning the cafeteria into a classroom allows students to immediately understand the impact the food system has on the environment, empowering them to make changes and to be tomorrow’s leaders on food waste reduction,” says Pearson.

How to Update Home Lighting to be Easy on the Eyes (Statepoint)

f you ever experience eyestrain, tired itchy eyes, blurry vision or headaches, it may be time to give your home a lighting makeover.

Problems caused by bad lighting can be intensified by using it for longer, something most households should keep in mind, as 74 percent of Americans in a recent survey, commissioned by lighting manufacturer, Signify, say they spend eight hours or more a day under artificial light.

The World Health Organization predicts that 50 percent of people will be short sighted by 2050.

Unfortunately, there’s 16

a disconnect between people’s concerns about eye health and the steps they are taking to support eye comfort at home.

While 80 percent of U.S. consumers in the same Signify survey say they believe good lighting is beneficial for eye health, a 2017 Signify study found only 21 percent take that into account when purchasing light bulbs, and only 29 percent consider light quality.

For many consumers, the disconnect may stem from overwhelming choice when it comes to home lighting and from not having enough information to make an informed decision. Luck-

ily, manufacturers are taking steps to improve lighting quality and help guide consumers in their search for comfortable light that’s easy on the eyes.

For example, Signify has defined specific lighting quality parameters, which take into account factors such as flicker, strobe, glare and dimming effects that can affect one’s eye comfort.

Consumers can look for an EyeComfort label on product packaging to identify the Philips LED light bulbs that meet the standards for quality lighting that’s easy on the eyes.

“When they get injured, they wonder if they’re going to be back on the field, or while they’re out, who’s going to take their spot, and ‘when I get heeled, am I going to have my spot back?’

For them, they’re not only in physical pain, but mental pain as well,” she said.

Mental health awareness

High profile cases such as the O.J. Simpson trial and Aaron Hernandez case are prime examples. Many players have their mind focused on playing sports professionally, and if it doesn’t happen some began to think negative thoughts about what they are doing and other options for their future. The environment you are raised in plays a big role in anyone’s mental health.

For athletes, if you have your family depending on you to make it, it can hurt that player mentally if a pro career doesn’t materialize, Ms. Fairley said. “Just seeing in the Black community that we don’t necessarily acknowledge mental health

issues, we just kind of push them off to the side, really caught my interest.

We always hear “just pray about it” and just kind of brush it under the rug.

Even though mental health issues are becoming a problem in the media, it has always been an issue.” Besides athletes, our favorite celebrities, and those we aspire to be [like], go through rough times also.

More people are open to talk about their mental health now more than ever because many have created that space for one to talk about their problems. Raven Fairley’s organization is set to launch at the end of 2019.

"Count Me In"

T

here are a few kids in your class that you usually try to ignore.

That’s because they’re kinda mean.

They call others names, knock books out of their hands, and say racist or hurtful things. They’re bullies, and you avoid them as much as possible, but as in the new book “Count Me In”

by Varsha Bajaj, could there be something you don’t know?

It was early in sixth grade, and Karina Chopra kept her head down. The popular boys, basketball players, had tried hard to humiliate her on the school bus and she wasn’t

having any of that. She was nerdy, she’d admit it. She was a good student and the teachers liked her. And her skin was brown, but was that any reason to harass and embarrass her?

No, it wasn’t, and though it was now early in the school year, seventh grade, Karina never forgot that hurtful incident. She still tried to avoid those boys, even though one of them, Chris Daniels, lived right next door. Avoiding him was a challenge: she and Chris were in five of their seven classes together.

rina Chopra thought he was one of the mean dudes. He didn’t blame her for it; he never stood up to any of the other boys on the team when they teased her, even though he knew he should. He actually thought Karina was one of the prettiest girls in Houston, but he couldn’t tell her that because he barely knew her, even though she’d lived next door for years.

And then – oh, man!

– Chris’s dad decided that Chris needed a math tutor and the school assigned Karina’s grandfather as his teacher! He had to spend practically every

after-school with them.

For sure, he’d make a total fool of himself!

But he didn’t. Instead, Chris learned math, and a lot more. He found out that Karina was pretty cool, and that Indian culture included awesome food. He learned to stand up for himself, and for Karina and her family. And he learned that there were haters in the world, and that they could change everything...

With its themes of bullying, violence toward immigrants, and diversity, if there ever was a timely tale, “Count Me In” is it.

And this is a nice book, to boot.

It’s not filled with needless drama or preteen angst or drugs.

There are no adult-only themes here, and

nothing from the realm of the unexplained. In-

stead, author Varsha Bajaj’s plot is one that teens and almost-teens may be grappling with now, and her characters are well-rounded, basically good kids caught in a modern problem with a modern solution. That leads to a message inside this tale that is underscored through repetition, and which could invite discussion.

Readers ages 10 and up will surely see themselves or someone they know inside this book and that might help the kid who needs it. Even if there’s no pressing concern for your child, “Count Me In” is a book she can’t ignore.
