Precious Lee Williams “Mother Williams” of Uptown Dance Academy.

obin Williams of the Uptown Dance Academy has announced the passing of her mother Precious Lee Williams. Fondly known as “Mother Williams,” Precious was the last born of ten children to the late John Henry Williams and Mattie Dorthelia on June 18, 1932 in Palestine, Arkansas.

Precious went Home to be with The Lord on Sunday, July 26th at 5:30 am at age 88 from complications following a major stroke two years ago, which left her unable to speak or use her limbs, and on a

tologist in 1963, and in 1967 she opened her own Beauty Shop Elegant Salon of Beauty. She enjoyed producing Fashion Shows, and won multiple trophies in Fantasy Hair design. She was a member of the National Black Cosmetologist League.

She attended Shiloh Humphrey School in Palestine where her dad was the Principal.

She attended Lincoln High School in Forrest City, Arkansas.

She accepted Christ at age twelve, and as an adult attended Church of Today in Detroit, Michigan.

In later years, she attended True Church of God in

Harlem, NY. Precious loved costume jewelry, and took up the hobby of making her own, which she sold in her shop’s boutique. Her favorite color was Red, she loved Queen Nefertiti, and her favorite artist was Erte. Her favorite Scripture was Genesis 22:13, which her dad taught and reminded her that “there is always a ram in the bush.”

Precious dedicated her life to supporting her daughter Robin’s dream to become a ballerina. In the year 2000, Precious retired and closed her shop to assist her daughter in building her dance school Uptown

Dance Academy. She worked diligently until she suffered a stroke in 2012. She was able to assist off and on for a while until 2018, when she suffered a massive stroke.

Precious is survived by her only daughter Robin Williams, four Nieces, four nephews, four second nieces, four second nephews, and their twenty six children and fifteen grandchildren.

She was a surrogate grandmother to hundreds of students at UDA. Precious was predeceased by five sisters and five brothers.

ancer can be a difficult and overwhelming diagnosis, and if you have cancer or are undergoing cancer treatment, your top priority is to get healthy.

After your cancer diagnosis, there are many new things you might need to learn and manage.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Blood Clot Alliance want you to protect your health by understanding your risk for dangerous blood clots, because cancer and some cancer treatments can increase your risk.

About 900,000 people in the U.S. each year are affected by blood clots, and about one in five of these

The risk for a blood clot is greatest in the first few months after cancer is diagnosed. Touro College & University System Announces Plan to Add New York College of Podiatric Medicine

ew York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) will join the Touro College & University System and New York Medical College, the institutions announced today. Touro president Dr. Alan Kadish and NYCPM president Mr. Louis Levine signed a Membership Agreement in an online ceremony to mark the occasion.

Founded in 1911, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) was the nation’s first medical college devoted to educating and training doctors of podiatric medicine. It combines outstanding classroom instruction with clinical training in one of the world’s largest foot care clinics.

Ominously, nearly 50,000 workers a week lost jobs in the city even during the economic recovery months of June and July – a pace of initial unemployment claims four times higher than during the worst of the 2008-09 Great Recession. And the July expiration of the temporary $600 Federal supplemental weekly unemployment insurance benefit will impose deep new hardships on hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and on the entire city economy.

Drawing on a range of current jobs and income data, this report paints a picture of the pandemic’s persisting economic impact on New York City and

State. Among other key report findings: While the official June unemployment rate in the city was 20.4 percent (up from 18.3 percent in May), the “actual” unemployment figure (measured by workers receiving unemployment benefits) was much higher, at 32.7 percent. In the Bronx, this actual unemployment rate was nearly 41 percent.

The number of public assistance recipients in the city rose nearly 16 percent between February and June, and the

number of residents enrolled in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, previously known as Food Stamps) increased by 12.5 percent during that period.

ome days it is amazing to me that I have been publishing “free” community weekly newspapers in Harlem for twenty-five years. I believe I am fulfilling a divine plan by doing what God set out for me to do in this lifetime.

I am confident in my purpose to provide coverage of “good works” by individuals and organizations; to share information to help elevate our lifestyle, health, education and economics; in addition to shedding light on opportunities pertinent to the overall wellness of my readers and the community at large. By virtue of my willingness to commit to my best with a viable plan, I am currently 100% owner, founder, and CEO of HARLEM COMMUNITY NEWS, INC. Before publishing I held various positions in media and advertising. There were many prominent positions I achieved that include, VP of Media & Promotions, JP Martin; managing media for Anheuser-Busch and the Budweiser Superfest concerts in 15 major cities; Media Director of Uni-

As the wide use of cell phones, Facebook and the Internet grew, with a steady flow of news broadcasts on television 24 hours a day, many consumers stopped buying newspapers. Thus, “free” community newspapers grew and there are now about 300 in New York State.

community newspapers targeted specifically to predominantly African American communities in New York State. In order to do so I had to immerse myself in the industry to understand the mechanics of it, so I joined the National Black Publishers Newspapers Association (NNPA).

Although the Harlem Community Newspapers are free, there are subscribers who receive a copy in the mail each week because they do not want to miss an issue. We now offer a digital edition sent through email and trending with the times, we have two Facebook pages, an instagram account and a website where our readers can retrieve current and past issues. (www.harlemcommunitynews.com) These delivery systems generate mailing and handling costs, so there is a fee stated on our website. Our basic income is generated via advertising in our newspaper and on our website.

Empowerment Zone meant for Harlem’s future. My first advertiser was Mart 125. My first columnists were Barbara Askins, now CEO of the 125th Street Business Improvement District; Arva Rice, who is now President of the New York Urban League’ and William “Tony” Rogers, who is President of the Harlem Tourism Board and on the Executive Board of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce.

For those who believe we do not help each other, I want you to know I had lots of help. Orchestrated by Thelma Russell, who was bank manager for Chase Bank and VP of the Harlem Business Alliance, several business owners In Harlem signed a note for me to get my first business loan from Chase bank.

Thelma Russell became my mentor with further support from Dorothy Pitman Hughes, who owned the only office supply store in Harlem in 1994 and Tony Rogers, who we later learned was married to my cousin. It was small business owners in Harlem such as Princess Jenkins of the Brownstone and Moctar Yara of Yara African Fashions who stuck with me throughout the years advertising their products.

As a businesswoman and mother raising a son, who is now 30, I was acutely aware of the challenges for women in the dual role. It was important to me that I promote women business owners.

During Women’s History Months in the past, I have presented annual events to bring these women together to network, learn about each other’s products and services, form partnerships and

most of all, to advocate and support one another.

Following the event, the women who attended are featured in a special issue to encourage the community to shop with them. In March 2019, more than 250 women attended the event at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem. The 2020 planned event that was scheduled for March 19th will hopefully take place virtually on October 15th.

With an interest in what African Americans were doing professionally in the performing arts, I employed journalist Linda Armstrong to help produce our first “Blacks on Broadway” issue more than 20 years ago.

Numerous conversations with Armstrong and Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, founder of the National Black Theatre, revealed there were less than 30 actors of color to feature. As of this year,

our annual spread published in February numbered more than 200 Black actors in casts on Broadway with an objective that our readers would support them. Unfortunately, COVID-19 shut Broadway down.

In 2015 I brought together four other Black publishers and held an event at the MIST on 116th Street honoring “Men Who Mentor Youth.” I believed that was important because many of our youth grow up without their father, which makes mentoring an asset in our community. Several years before holding that event, I had annually published information on organizations where youth could be nurtured as a “Father’s Day” special.

Rethinking many of the meaningful events and even the multitude of thought provoking articles I have published weekly in the newspapers, I know it is not

enough for me to just sit behind a desk and crank out a publication each week with the top stories of the day.

I was touched by the recent worldwide attention given the Black Lives Matter movement. I just had to go out and participate when they gathered in Harlem.

I believe the protests and revelations caused by the Pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement has shown that Black Newspapers are as important today as they were when the first Black-owned publication “Freedom Journal” was published in 1827.

I was born in Savannah, Georgia. I saw the signs “Whites Only” at restrooms and water fountains. I was made aware of the racial disparities in the country at a young age and always conscious about trying to do something to make a differContinued on page 17

My family marched with Jose Williams in the 60’s for integration of Woolworth and other stores, movie theaters, schools, etc. As a child they took me to the protests and to the churches where I learned all the freedom songs. So, publishing the community newspapers each week is my way of doing something to make a difference in my community by uplifting those individuals and organizations that do the right thing.

In the 25 years I have been publishing, I have had to face ups and downs and challenges. It has not always been easy focusing on the happy times in print without editorial on the other side of what is going on. We had to cover the terror of 911, the waters of hurricane Sandy, the fear in the recession and currently some input on the

present administration, after all we are a newspaper.

Harlem Community Newspapers, Inc. is a certified NY City and NY State MWBE. I am fully aware that It has been with the consistent support of the small businesses, the community, organizations & agencies who specifically place advertising in minority publications, that we continue to exist on this journalistic path. It is through the efforts of Governor Cuomo, Mayor Dinkins, Mayor Bloomberg and Mayor DeBlasio who have mandated that NY City and NY State agencies place ads in community newspapers, that I have been able to maintain a consistent presence in the community.

September 10, 2015, I was honored by more than 200 politicians, business owners, contractors, community leaders, colleagues,

friends, and family, at the Alhambra Ballroom on 126th and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard for my 20 years of publishing and community service in Harlem and beyond.

I must express my thanks again to the committee that planned and executed my 20th anniversary celebration in 2015. The committee included an esteemed list, some retired and others who wear many hats in the Harlem Community, including La-Verna J. Fountain, Sabrina Brice, Maria Grazia Cavenaghi, Eugenia Foxworth, Dawn M. Hill (now deceased), Ruth D. Hunt, Princess Jenkins, Pat Lilly, Virginia Montague, Tony Rogers, and Thelma Russell.

It took a village to get me here. I am thankful for the village of supporters who have kept me on my feet.

One year after my 20th Anniversary, in 2016, I was diagnosed and treated with chemotherapy for Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

As an independent business minded Black woman, used to marching to my own rhythm, on my own schedule, this disease and what it entailed to survive was a hard pill to swallow.

Four years later, after five months of treatments and surgery and then being told I was cancer-free in July 2017, I know my life has changed. My heart is full and I can not say enough to thank those who immediate came to my side and ensured I would be able to continue the publishing of the newspapers. Thank you again to my son Dom-

tion of any kind during cancer treatment has prepared me for the Pandemic and what we are all facing now. Because I did have cancer and do have diabetes, and high blood pressure and I am over 65, I am considered high risk for COVID. Through it all, I am grateful that I am still here to celebrate 25 years publishing four newspapers with the same joy and enthusiasm as when it all began. God willing, as we move ahead together into new beginnings, I look forward to what I believe will be the advancements in our community due to the lights shown on the inequities during the Black Lives Matter protests.

wenty Five years ago Harlem was not considered a very safe place to live. There were so many abandoned buildings and vacant lots throughout.

The cultural institutions and couple of entertainment venues such as the Apollo, Cotton Club, National Black Theater, Studio Museum, Lenox Lounge, Showman’s and a couple more lounges were the limited number of tourists attractions, along with a couple of restaurants including Sylvia’s and Copeland.

Now it is hard to find any abandoned buildings and there is ongoing construction seemingly on every inch of available land. There are new condominiums and rentals opening constantly, attracting a more diverse population to Harlem. The median sales price for properties in Harlem’s 10030 zip code increased about 159%

Now there are banks on just about

The demographics of Harlem’s communities have changed throughout its history. In 1910, 10% of Harlem’s population was Black but by 1930, they had become a 70% majority. The period between 1910 and 1930 marks a huge point in the great migration of African Americans from the South to New York. This point also marks an influx from downtown Manhattan neighborhoods where blacks were feeling less welcome, to the Harlem area. The black population in Harlem peaked in 1950, with a 98% share of the population (population 233,000). As of the 2000 census, central Harlem’s black population was 77% of the total population.

These factors may keep the

African-American population skewed high in Harlem for some time to come.

In the past 25 years there have been quite a number of streets and buildings named after African-Americans who have made significant impact in the burgeoning of Harlem and the civil rights of the Black Community.

One of the most significant of these structures is the statue of Adam Clayton Powell which stands on 125th Street in front of the Adam Clayton Powell Jr, State Office Building. This statue was funded through the efforts of a committee of community leaders and residents.

Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (November 29, 1908 – April 4, 1972) was a Baptist pastor and an American politician, who represented the Harlem neighborhood of New York City in the United States House of Representatives from 1945 until 1971.

Upon the death of James Brown in 2006 thousands of people danced and sang in the streets outside the historic Apollo Theatre in celebration of the Godfather of Soul tonight as his body was displayed inside on the stage where he made his 1956 debut. Crowds gathered at the Apollo Theater in 2009 and stayed throughout the night to mourn Jackson’s death. Therefore, Regardless of what the future count will be for the percentage of African-American residents in Harlem, names of those who have fought for, built and advocated for Harlem are woven into the community buildings and streets.

The post office on 125th Street has been named for Percy Sutton, as well as a condominium on 148th and Bradhurst called “the Sutton.” Percy Sutton served as

Manhattan Borough President, he also saved the Apollo Theater.

The Apollo Theater remains the worldwide known tourist attraction in Harlem.

Opened in 1913 as the Hurtig burlesque theater which closed in 1933 and reopened in 1934 as the Apollo Theater introducing the first Amateur Night contest. The Apollo closed again in 1978 Percy Sutton’s Inner City Broadcasting Corporation and a group of private investors purchased the Apollo in 1981 and introduced the television show “Showtime at the Apollo.” In 1983 the Apollo received landmark status and was established as a non-profit corporation

Of course we need to mention President Barack Obama sang bars from Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” on the stage of the Apollo during his re-election campaign.

From 1965 to 2007 the Harlem Boys Choir was

a touring choir and education program for young boys, most of whom were Black. The Girls Choir of Harlem was founded in 1989.

Unfortunately these two very positive programs for our youth were closed in 2007.

the largest African American Day Parade, which celebrates the culture of the African Diaspora in America.

The parade was started up in the spring of 1969 with Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. as the Grand Marshal of the first celebra-

tion. The celebration usually takes place September 20 and is scheduled to be presented virtual this year due to the Pandemic.

HARLEM WEEK, is one of the largest celebrations in New York which draws thousands to Harlem with more than 100 events

throughout the summer from the end of July to the end of August. This year HARLEM WEEK is being held virtually due to the Pandemic.

There are more than 100 churches in Harlem. Several got a facelift as they sold property to developers and they received a new building

inside the property as part of the deal. There are several churches with landmark status in Harlem, including Abyssinian Baptist Church and Mother Zion Methodist Church.

In 2001 Former President Bill Clinton officially opened his office in Harlem. The

community welcomed him with open arms. Hundreds of Harlem community leaders and residents celebrated the arrival of their new neighbor with a traditional block party along 125th Street.

On September 11, 2001, Harlem, along with all of New York City faced the

worst tragedy in its history before the Pandemic. The attacks on the World Trade Center touched New Yorkers from all walks of life in countless ways.

an arts center. When Columbia’s expansion is complete in 2030 and we have another census that year, we expect a more diverse Harlem and I project the number will remain predominantly African-American.

Before the Empowerment Zone there were groups who continue to build affordable housing and provide positive programs for the community, including HCCI which is a non profit organization organized by about 88 churches in Harlem and the West Harlem Group, to name a few. There are also many organizations that support small businesses such as the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, the Women’s Chamber of Commerce, Harlem Business Alliance, Harlem Park to Park, The Bradhurst Merchants Association and Uptown Grand Central, to name a few.

We are currently in the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic, which has presented some real challenges for the future of Harlem, as well as the entire world. Our current administration and the Black Lives Matter movement has unveiled some true bias and inequalities against the African-American communities.

There have been many promises offered of reform. Harlem currently being predominantly African-American is waiting to see the future impact of this deadly disease and benefits of the Black Lives Matter movement. We are working together toward a brighter future. I want to remind those in the community who can, support our local small businesses in the community, as well as our restaurants, and cultural institutions when they open. God Willing the Pandemic will be history and a vaccine will be created real soon.

African American Women in Cinema

or the past 22 years, the African American Women in Cinema (AAWIC) has provided continuous support for talented female filmmakers. The organization used founder Terra Renee’s strong background in filmmaking to provide a platform for support for the work of women in 1998.

Before she founded AAWIC, Terra studied

filmmaking and film directing at the School of Visual Arts. After completing her studies at SVA, Ms. Renee associate produced several independent films including Island Alicia, a feature, which was the official selection at the Cannes Festival UN Certain Regard Category.

The mission of AAWIC is to showcase experienced and novice filmmakers, directors, producers, screenwriters, and actors. The organization’s focus has always been to expand, explore and create business opportunities for minority female filmmakers within a male dominated industry.

It has always been a goal of AAWIC to give artistic women an opportunity to showcase their talents

among their peers and established professionals.

This year, the annual showcase film festival was challenged due to the closing of theaters because of COVID. Matt McCoy CEO of the Soul City Network offered to support AAWIC by making the film festival an on demand pay-perview special on the Soul City Network www.soulcity.me from August 16st to the 31st. The festival will become part of SCN’s marketing and promotional support for the virtual HARLEM WEEK/Harlem Music Festival from August 16th to August 23rd(www. harlemweek.com).

SCN will continue the HMF celebration with four days of programming that will also acknowledge the

100th anniversary of the first Harlem Renaissance.

A portion of the pay-perview special will provide each of the film makers a much-needed grant. A portion of the festival will also support the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce’s Support Harlem Now initiative.

This GHCC initiative provides over 1,300 meals during the week to families in need. They also repair and purchase laptops or computers for public school children who have been challenged by the lack of equipment for distance learning.

The selected films for the festival are: “Fixed” directed by Ashley Ellis, “Life’s Checklist” directed

by Shayla Racquel, “Wom-

en Outside” directed by Yolanda Ross, “Window Dressing” directed by Stacey Larkina, “Breathless” directed by Analls Cisco, and “Unto Me” directed by Nancy Vuu. Each film can be viewed with a $10.00 donation (go to www.soulcity.me to select the film you would like to watch). This is an excellent way to support the creative film makers and an especially important Harlem community service. You can get additional information about the GHCC Go Fund Me program at www.supportharlemnow.com SCN will broadcast a

national economic summit, a special Hottest Poets reunion, and a great deal of musical performances for the 24th to the 27th of August along with the AAWIC film festival. You will find a schedule of HW/HMF virtual events at the Harlem Week website and on the Soul City website.

The AAWIC festival will be the first on demand pay-per-view program featured on the new SCN multimedia platform powered

by Verizon. Not only will the new SCN platform provide a wonderful selection of entertaining, educational and informative programming but it will provide community-based organizations fund raising options during special SCN on demand programming.

“The Truths We Hold: An American Journey” by Kamala Harris REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

I

t starts early-on.

At first, it seems spontaneous: parents who enjoy their interests naturally display those passions to small children who are dragged along for the ride. The child observes and absorbs until one day, parental interest becomes child’s obsession.

And in “The Truths We Hold” by Kamala Harris, that’s how a politician is made.

Supporters can almost see the trajectory in the history: Kamala Harris’s parents, both highly educated immigrants, instilled a sense of independence in their daughter and both remained supportive of her choices, even as they

divorced. Harris’s mother, especially, gave Harris lessons in strength and activism through an upper-middle-class childhood with ballet and piano lessons alongside marches and protests.

Says Harris of her mother, a breast cancer researcher, “... she was determined to make sure we [Harris and her sister] would grow into confident, proud black women.”

Harris describes her community – the women and men who helped raise and educate her – with obvious affection, saying that “the seed was planted very early on,” and she knew that she wanted to be a lawyer and to make a difference in the lives of others.

“When activists came

marching and banging on the doors,” she says, “I wanted to be on the other side to let them in.”

By the time Harris had finished law school, her sights were set on working “for the people.” She focused on the prosecution of child molesters, sexual predators, and rapists. On her way up the career ladder, she continued to advocate for the poor, for women and children, and for the rights of LGBTQ people and immigrants. She worked for the reduction of recidivism, for Americans in need of health care, and for consumers and homeowners.

Says Harris, “In the years to come with all the challenges to come, we cannot lose sight of who

we are and who we can be.”

As biographies by famous people go, “The Truths We Hold” is a refreshing surprise, in that there’s very little look-atme name-dropping. Author and assumed Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris mentions people because of work or family ties, not to impress. Remarkably, she also writes of her friendship with Beau Biden.

The other interesting thing about this memoir is that readers will not see laid-out plans for the future: remember, this book was likely written at least two years ago and Harris presumably had no crystal ball. Instead of plainly-stated plans, what she offers “is a collection

of ideas and viewpoints and stories...” Readers are left to see passions between the lines, and can draw their own conclusions.

Aside from this, there’s plenty of biography which, again, is not filled with esoteric names-and-dates but with things that are relevant to the story of who Harris is and how she sees this country. That makes “The Truths We Hold”easy to read, if not a bit long in the achievement department, but not uninteresting. If you’d like to know more about the woman who may sit in the Vice President’s chair next January, read it now, while it’s early-on.
