I am always pleased to see so many continue to support and participate in the NAACP. I am a member of the mid Manhattan branch. The NAACP is a civil rights advocacy group we continue to need today, as much as we have in the past. As we have all seen in the past couple of years - "Racism is alive and still at work in America." City Parks Foundation Kicks-Off Free Fall Sports Programs For 1,500 Nyc Youth In Addition To Seniors Fitness Programs

C

ity Parks Foundation is kicking off its 2019 fall sports programs for youth and seniors this September. City Parks Foundation provides free programs each year to over 12,000 New York City youth and 1,000 seniors.

This fall, we will host over 1,000 youth and 500 seniors in 26 neighborhood parks and recreation centers for participation in FREE programs in golf, and track & field for youth, plus tennis, yoga and fitness walking instruction for seniors.

Registration for all programs are now open online and in person at each park site.

CityParks Track & Field, presented in partnership with New York Road Runners and supported by the Randall’s Island Park Alliance, held in 4 parks, gives New York City youth the chance to learn the basics of the sport, from hurdles and relay races, to long jump, shot put and javelin throw. The free Track & Field program runs from September 21 - October 27 in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx and is held once per week, available to youth ages eight - 14.

The Jesse Owens fall track program introduces novice runners to cross country distance running through

Comptroller Stringer Pens Open Letter to Workers: You Have Labor Rights Regardless of Immigration Status

Dear New Yorker: As many of you may know, my office enforces state and local prevailing wage laws. That means that if you have done construction work on a New York City public work project or have been employed in a building service job through a city contract or in a building with an affordable housing property tax exemption, then you may be entitled to prevailing wages and benefits, regardless of your immigration status.

Often, workers are unaware that our office has collected money on their behalf. Other times, the workers are afraid to come forward because of fear of retaliation by their employer or because of their immigration status. If you believe you were underpaid on a City-funded job – no matter who you are, or where you’re from – let us know.

We work to recoup unpaid wages with interest, and we collect money for workers

regardless of their immigration status or whether they still live in New York City or have moved to another state or country.

Because informed workers are their own best advocates, my office has started a new initiative to fine contractors that fail to provide written notice to their employees of their right to

receive prevailing wages and benefits. Workers that know their rights are less likely to be exploited by unscrupulous employers.

Since taking office in 2014, we have assessed more than $28 million against City contractors in unpaid prevailing wages with interest and penalties, returned more than $13.5

million to workers, and barred over 50 contractors who took advantage of workers from State and City public work contracts.

And we’ve done it because people came forward.

No New Yorker should be exploited, and no New Yorker should be illegally underpaid, regardless of their immigration status.

Together, we can make an honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work a reality on City-funded jobs.

10 Acronyms Homebuyers Need to Know

MI, APR, LTV… these unfamiliar acronyms don’t need to bewilder or intimidate uninitiated homebuyers.

To help you negotiate the homebuying process like a pro, Freddie Mac is sharing definitions of 10 key acronyms you’ll encounter as you meet with lenders, make a down payment and pay back your loan.

1. APR (Annual Percentage Rate): The APR tells you the annual cost of borrowing money based on the loan amount, interest rate and certain others fees.

Use it as the bottom-line number to shop and compare rates among lenders.

2. FRM (Fixed-Rate Mortgage): The most common type of mortgage, an FRM, has an interest rate

that doesn’t change, giving you stability over the life of the loan.

ARM (Adjustable-Rate Mortgage): An ARM usually offers lower monthly payments at the outset, but after three, five or seven years, payments change with interest rates and reset periodically.

4. LTV (Loan-to-Value): The LTV ratio equals the

amount of money borrowed divided by the home’s appraised value. It shows how much of your home you own versus how much you owe, and lenders use it to help evaluate the risk and terms of your loan.

5. DTI (Debt-to-Income): Calculated by lenders to assess your ability to manage monthly payments and repay debts, DTI is the

percentage of your monthly income that goes toward your monthly debt payments.

6. PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance): For homebuyers making down payments that are less than 20 percent of the home purchase price, PMI is a required insurance that protects lenders from losses if borrowers are unable to pay their mortgage. PMI is typically incorporated into monthly mortgage payments.

7. P&I (Principal and Interest): This is the portion of your monthly mortgage payment that goes toward paying off the money you borrowed to buy your home. For most homeowners, P&I make up the majority of your monthly mortgage payment — but not all of it.

8. PITI (Principal, Interest, Taxes and Insurance): Together, principal, interest, taxes and insurance make up your total monthly mortgage payment. Calculating your total monthly payment is essential for giving you a more accurate picture of the cost of homeownership than P&I alone.

9. UPB (Unpaid Principal Balance): The amount of principal still owed on a loan is referred to as UPB. On a typical monthly mortgage payment, a portion of your payment is applied to the interest and a portion is applied to the principal. The following month’s interest is based on your UPB. To check how much of your payment is going towards your principal, take a look at your amortization schedule.

10. HOA (Homeown-

ers Association): Twenty percent of America’s homeowners live within a community governed by an HOA. Before buying in such a community, get a handle on how much its HOA fees are, what they cover, and how often payments are due. Typically paid monthly, quarterly, or annually, HOA fees may cover services such as trash removal, lawn care, pest control and maintenance for common areas.

midst the hustle and bustle of New York City, there is a place that offers a close up and personal view of how Mother Nature, the ultimate artist, works her magic.

The Mother doesn’t do it all alone. She’s got plenty of help via the caring hands of La Finca del Sur South Bronx Farmers. Nestled at the border of Harlem and the Bronx, this oasis in the Bronx is not just a place of greenery and peace, but a source of healthy, affordable and accessible food for all. It is one thing to see food neatly wrapped and stacked in a grocery store, but it is quite another to see, feel, smell and taste fresh food right out of the farm bed. La Finca del Sur South Bronx Farmers is an urban farm cooperative led by Latina women and Black women and their allies.

La Finca del Sur is committed to building healthy neighborhoods through economic empowerment, increased nutritional awareness, training and education as well as advocating for social equality, political equality and food justice in low-income communities.

The spirit of the ancestors dwells within the act of farming, no matter where your ancestors were from.

Farming is almost as old as humanity itself. Through growing food much history and culture is revealed. We learn how grandmothers and grandfathers provided for their children and how their parents provided for them, that we might come into existence. La Finca del Sur honors that history and

gives young people a chance to learn about agricultural history and cultural foods, as well as foods good for one’s health. Farm Manager Frances Perez Rodriguez often sends out emails of the caring tasks to be shared by members of this cooperative and most times has something upbeat and inspiring to share. Founding members Nancy Ortiz-Surun and her husband Demetrio are familiar «busy bees» at La Finca.

Speaking of bees, La Finca del Sur has them too. Under the watchful eyes and caring hands of farmer Alan Markowitz, Beekeeper Extraordinaire, they are busy making honey, helping La Finca do their part in saving the world’s bees.

Early in the farming season Farmer Anna Rickards keeps a watchful eye on the seedlings. Seedlings are nature’s birthing of the farm each year. They too require car-

ing hands.

If you would like to see fresh collard greens stretching their leaves towards the sun and outward, or smell fresh sage, basil and mint sending their aromas into the fresh air, visit La Finca del Sur’s Farmer’s Market on September 28, 2019 from 12:00noon to 5:00pm, located at 138th & the Grand Concourse.

You’ll find organics and art there too.

While you are there you may want to inquire about farming education, recipes or even get some hands on experience by volunteering.

n September 7, 2019, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, over 500 guests, representing the who’s who of New York City’s social society, elected officials and activists joined The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Mid-Manhattan Branch at their 18th Annual Freedom Fund Roy Wilkins Awards Luncheon at the elegant Marina del Rey, in the Throgs Neck, Bronx, New York.

Luncheon Chair Kyndell Reid gave welcoming remarks and introduced New York 1 News Anchor, historian and author Cheryl Wills as the awards luncheon Mistress of Ceremony. The cocktail hour hors d’oeuvres were tastefully prepared and the sounds of the Warren Daniels Band had everyone in step and on the dance floor throughout the afternoon.

Reverend Dr. Thomas D. Johnson, Sr., Senior Pastor of the historic Canaan Baptist Church of Christ gave the Invocation. Songstress Allyson Eaton performed an emotional musical tribute in memoriam of Donald Herbert Eaton, Jr. (Father of Donald, Geoffrey and Allyson) and all of the branch members who recently transitioned onward.

The Green Show: Dialogs about Cannabis

T

he legalization of the recreational use of Cannabis is growing in states across the country. New York State will become the 12th state to legalize Cannabis for recreational use in 2020 according to many of the experts following the

legislative debates.

I had the opportunity to work with Leslie Stone (leslie@letstalkcannabiz. tv) during HARLEM WEEK. Leslie is a leading authority on the Cannabis industry and it’s growth over the past few years.

the growth of the Cannabis industry in California after laws to legalize cannabis for recreational use were adopted. She has developed training models for those who are interested in learning how the industry works, and how to develop business options.

One Cannabiz training center has opened in Brooklyn, she would like to find a space in Harlem next.

After several conversations with Leslie I realized that I could provide a forum for dialogs that a larger number of people in Harlem and other urban neighborhoods through New York State could listen to; and be directed to other cannabiz networks.

I will produce a fourpart pilot series titled

The Green Show: “Dialogs About Cannabis” on WHCR 90.3 FM/www. whcr.org Starting Tuesday October 15th and Tuesday October 22nd On my Urbanology Radio show between the hours of 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

The Green Show dialogs will focus on the emerging Cannabis Industry with experts in both the public sector and the private sector. What type of business opportunities can and will develop upon the legalization of Cannabis?

There is no doubt that many outside of Harlem and other New York State urban communities are already developing strategies to take advantage of what is now being called the New York State “Green Rush”

The focus for the dialogs on the Green Show will be to separate the facts from the fiction. How can the communities in urban American who have been disproportionately victimize by outdated and in some cases unfair Cannabis convections, take advantage of the opportunities that a legalized Cannabis industry can offer?

The Green Show pilot will launch on WHCR 90.3 FM October 15th from 4:10 pm to 4:50 pm.

A Green Show Dialog series on the Cannabis Industry pilot series is also being considered for the Soul City Social Broadcasting Network which will stream the show on demand to millions of viewers.

ith a book in your hands, you can do almost anything.

Grab a cookbook and make a meal. Pick up a how-to book and fix a toilet. Take a trip to the past or the future, learn to knit, meet a new friend, you can do it with a book. Or, with a book like “A Death in Harlem” by Karla FC Holloway, you might solve a crime.

It was a rare day when Officer Weldon Thomas didn’t have reading material with him.

Even on assignment as Harlem’s first and only “colored” policeman, he carried a book because his assignments were light and he nev-

er knew when there’d be time to read. And that’s exactly what he was doing on that midwinter night in 1927 when guests at the Ninth Annual Opportunity Awards Banquet, an event he was policing, came screaming down the stairs of the Hotel Theresa.

It didn’t take long for him to understand the problem. He saw for himself, right outside the hotel’s door: beautiful storywriter Olivia Frelon lay on her back on the sidewalk, her red gown spilling around her as red blood spilled from her head. She was obviously dead, but what happened to make her fall from one of the

hotel’s windows?

In the days following that night, everyone talked and most of them talked about Vera Scott.

She and Olivia had been best friends; they did everything together and were like two halves of a whole although Olivia, with her light skin, could pass for a white woman. Was Vera jealous of that, or was the rumor true that Vera’s husband was sleeping with Vera’s best friend?

It begins on the story’s first page, with language that’s often more fit for academia but that’s mixed with Jazz-Age slang, stereo-

typical inner-city patter, and today’s modern

terms, sometimes all in the same scene. If that doesn’t raise one eyebrow for you, this will: it seems as though half of Harlem 1927 is in this story, a populousness that feels particularly excessive when characters are referred to inconsistently. Author Karla FC Holloway tells a truly great story, but it’s told in a way that may make you scratch your head sometimes.

The best thing to do here, perhaps, then, is to give yourself time with this book; it would be a shame to miss the twisty-fun of “A Death in Harlem.” If you can lend it some patience, get it in your hands.
