I have always believed that when you do good for others, “good” will come back to you 10 fold. I have been shown that so many times in my own life.

I have been asked “why I do so much for other business owners when I am struggling myself.”

My answer was an easy one. I have been blessed to be in business for myself now for 25 years and counting because I have received so much support and financial assistance from other business owners, family members and collegues. I thank God for what I have received and continue to receive and allowing me to be a blessing to others.

We had planned to have our Women Business Owners networking event on October 15th at the Alhambra Ballroom. Obviously that is not going to happen since we usually have more than 200 people participate. Therefore we are planning to connect via Zoom and asking the women to produce a 1-2 minute video so we can promote their products/ services during our Zoom event.

I know that we all are aware how important it is for us to vote in November. Plan to do what you have to do to get your vote in. Plan to vote early. Mail in your ballot if you must, however, you ought not to be able to sleep at night if you fail to vote.

More Than a Vote: King James Leads Plans to Increase Poll Workers

n effort by pro athletes called More Than a Vote is working to increase the number of poll workers in Black electoral districts has amassed 10,000 volunteers since it began.

State elections officials in many cities have sounded the alarm regarding a shortage of poll workers to handle in-person voting.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has caused an unexpected problem for local officials. The problem is a bigger issue in Black communities that have far longer wait times to vote than polls in white communities.

The specific plan to increase workers at the polls is called We Got Next. The efforts will include a partnership with the NAACP

Legal Defense Fund and was focused on during the first game of the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers. As the national anthem was played for game one, players on both teams knelt and wore shirts with the word “vote” on them in large letters.

“We are Black athletes and artists working together. Our priority right now is combating systemic, racist voter suppression by educating, energizing, and protecting our community in 2020. Please read our letter asking fans to join us in the fight against Black voter suppression,” reads the website for the initiative which can be viewed at www.morethanavote. org.

The cities that will be focused on feature thousands of Black voters and include Birmingham, Montgomery, Jackson, Houston, Charlotte, Cleveland, Detroit,

Flint, Milwaukee and Philadelphia.

A second phase of the initiative would be even more targeted and will be aimed at 11 cities, “where

significant poll worker shortages remain.”

PONDER THIS! Shingles is Shockingly Serious

f there is one thing we can share with others, it can be our life experiences. It is my belief there is a purpose and a plan already outlined in the destiny of every creation.

There is not one thing that has happened, is happening at this moment or will happen in the future that is new and does not have a reason and a source of survival.

It is our responsibility to be willful participators in this life journey and there will be numerous challenges along the way. Never doubt that what you have experienced is not important enough

to share. Your survivorship and how you made it over is important and uplifting to others. Knowledge is power and the fact that you have personal knowledge of a situation is what makes it valuable. We must tell our story for the sake of others.

I have spent the month of September in the throes of excruci-

ating pain from herpes zoster (Shingles) and it is not over yet. An outburst can prevail 4 to 6 weeks and persist even after the rash is gone termed as postherpetic neuralgia.

Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the inactive chickenpox virus (varicella zoster) which infects 99% of adults 50 years or age and older. If you had chickenpox, you are a candidate for shingles.

The immune system naturally weakens as we age, so risk for shingles increases, even if you feel healthy. If you have suffered through shingles anywhere on your body, you are most likely remember-

ing and feeling a tingling sensation in the area where you experienced it right now.

Seemingly overnight a flat red rash rises into steamy blisters. They gather in clusters and they are relentless.

Whatever touches the blisters, a t-shirt or sheet, a transmittal of pain circulates throughout the entire pack.

There are a few antiviral medications prescribed, Valacyclovir for me taken once daily and dabbing Calamine Lotion to jumpstart drying.

Other underlying health conditions may limit the kind of pain medication you can take. Pain medications

can only suffice with consistency. Do not fool yourself, you will need something to get you through, be brave, but ask for relief.

This is my third round of this insipid circumstance in the last twenty-five years. It is difficult to comprehend that the chicken pox at the age of eleven could create a virus that lives dormant in the body, settling in certain nerves and tissue of the nervous system.

I did not take the shingles shot and I must accept the foolishness of that decision. I tell my dilemma to everyone I can because I do not want to know that I did not share good

advice. Shingles is serious and you do not want to have it on your resume. Currently the CDC recommends ages 50 and older get the Shingrix vaccine. The vaccine is administered in two doses, which are given two to six months apart. DO THIS FOR YOU! mid the historic coronavirus pandemic, businesses are adapting by making major changes to their operations, including increased use of technology, according to the latest PNC semi-annual survey of small and mid-size business owners and executives, which concluded Sept.

Eight in 10 business owners reported that they have made adaptations in response to COVID-19, including safety changes in the form of new procedures or physical modifications, while others have adopted work-fromhome policies.

“Business owners have learned that the previous status quo won’t work now. The majority of businesses have reconfigured their operations and for many,

these changes will be permanent,” says PNC chief economist, Gus Faucher. “Their confidence may be shaken, but we know through the history of this survey that business owners are resilient and they know how to adapt to change.”

According to the survey, half of businesses report increased use of technology since the outbreak began. Nearly three in 10 have added or increased the use of electronic or touchless payment systems, electronic/website-enabled sales or electronic banking/cash flow management services and 19 percent increased use of fraud/identity protection tools.

The pandemic has also forced many businesses to shake up their product lineups to better align with consumers’ new habits. A third of business owners report making changes either

Gemini II Reimagining Business During COVID-19 Pandemic

elen Pearsall-Barksdale and Alice McNeil owners of Gemini II Specialty Boutique, having been providing women in Harlem with specialized bras, under garments and apparel for 31 years. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic they have had to reimagine their business model. They officially closed their last brick and mortar location and are now hosting private sales events and working on their online presence.

This past weekend the Harlem Business Alliance hosted a “going out of business” sales event for them to get rid of some of their inventory. The Harlem Business Alliance offers the “Creative Workspace” where business owners can rent desk space by the day or by the month. Regina Smith, President of the Harlem Business Alliance said, “The Harlem

Business Alliance has advocated for affordable commercial

space as well as commercial condos for Harlem’s Black-

owned businesses. As long as there is no political support or accountability for policies which support Black business creation, sustainability, and expansion, we will continue to lose the few remaining businesses like Gemini Boutique to rising rents, inequitable access to procurement opportunities and capital, and the Coronavirus pandemic.”

One customer who attended the event this past Saturday, Lil Nickelson said, I depend on Gemini II to get my properly fitted bras.”

years they moved to 353 125th Street@ St. Nicholas a couple of doors down from the post office. They were at that location for 17 years but were forced off of 125th Street due to rising rents. They then moved to St. Nicholas and 128th Street, with the aid of a grant from the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone designed to help small business who were forced off of 125th Street but willing to relocate in Harlem. They stayed at that location for 10 years.

High rents again forced them to move and they moved into

the Artisian Market along with about 11 other business owners. COVID 19 shut down the Artisian Market as well as other businesses in March.

Gemini II decided not to continue operating out of the market. Helen and Alice obeyed the quarantine for 6 months.

Last month, they began contacting their customers to let them know they will continue to find a way to service them.

Gemini’s customers tend to be women who find it difficult to find the right bra and under garments because of their size and body types. This is what

they specialize in and these are the women who tend to be their customers. Helen said, “We plan to continue to have a couple of pop up events to sell our current inventory and we are working on our online presence so we hope our customers will continue to reach out to us because we will find ways to continue to service them.”

Service Learning Gives Students Purpose and Connection in Quarantine (Statepoint)

T

he typical routine a school year brings has been lost this year, as students adjust to hybrid or fully remote learning models and ever-changing reopening plans.

According to McKinsey, 75% of the 50 largest school districts in the country have decided to start remotely, and the UN estimates that 94% of the world’s student population has been impacted.

While the disruption the coronavirus has caused the educational system is clear, the long-term impact on students’ mental health is even greater cause for concern. Research recently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry found that young people who are lonely are up to three times more likely to develop de-

While these findings are alarming, utilizing service-learning to supplement traditional curriculum can give students a sense of purpose and connection, helping mitigate loneliness in a

digital environment.

One program that has shown success in fostering social and emotional learning is the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program, which encompasses digital lessons in leadership, as well as creating and implementing team projects to meet a need in the community.

“What I want people to take away from our project is that even through isolation, you can still find ways to help out in your community,” says Genesis Morgane, a student from Garner, N.C. who created the “Corona Relief Crew” through the program, distributing kits with essential food and supplies to the homeless and those in nursing homes who have been severely impacted by the pandemic.

While the pandemic meant that students had to rapidly adjust to physical distancing

guidelines, they were successful in completing their project and building meaningful relationships in a remote environment.

“The most amazing part of their efforts was that everything was done virtually,” says Dr. Cleopatra Lacewell, the teacher overseeing the Corona Relief Crew. “The youth had to engage one another through emails, texts and a computer screen, which is often a challenge for me as an adult.”

The Corona Relief Crew was honored by Lead4Change with a $10,000 grant for the nonprofit of their choice, but an equally rewarding outcome of the project was instilling in its participants a sense of meaning in connection in their community.

Genetics, Diagnosis, Treatment: NIH Takes on Sickle Cell Disease Globally

ach year, some 150,000 children in Nigeria are born with sickle cell disease, the most common—and often life-threatening—inherited blood disorder in the world.

“I was not happy when I read that Nigeria will have the highest contribution to the global burden of sickle cell disease by 2050—if we continue at the present birth rate and the level of inactivity in newborn screening,” said hematologist Obiageli Nnodu, M.D., the lead researcher in Nigeria for the Sickle Pan African Research Consortium (SPARCo), funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHL-

BI), part of the National Institutes of Health. “As a country, we can do better than that. After all, this is a disease where children die undiagnosed, and largely from preventable causes such as bacterial infections.”

Sickle cell disease affects 20 million people worldwide, including at least 100,000 in the United States, mainly African Americans, but Hispanics and Asian-Americans, too.

To help address the problem on a global scale, the NHLBI has been supporting programs in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 75 percent of the sickle cell disease births world-

wide occur. SPARCo, with a hub in Tanzania, and additional sites in Nigeria and Ghana, works to develop an infrastructure for sickle cell disease research, health care, education, and training to take place in Africa.

“We are showing that with effective partnerships, significant advances in health and biomedical science can be achieved,” said Tanzania-based Julie Makani, M.D., Ph.D., who leads the SPARCo consortium. SPARCo, in collaboration with the Sickle Africa Data Coordinating Center, led by Ambroise Wonkam, M.D., in South Africa, created Sickle In

Africa, which has a growing electronic registry of more than 10,000 individuals with sickle cell disease.

“The genetic diversity of Africa’s population allows scientific research that will increase our understanding of how a disease caused by a single gene can manifest in such different ways,” Makani explained.

Newborn screening, as Nnodu noted, is the first step to reduce mortality and suffering for these children, and for that, they need good tests readily available at the point of care. That’s why NHLBI supports research towards development of diagnostics, such as a

new rapid result test that is relatively inexpensive, accurate, and can provide a timely diagnosis of sickle cell disease. The test does not require sophisticated laboratory equipment, electricity, refrigeration, or highly trained personnel—a critical advantage for countries with few resources.

On the treatment front, a large multinational NHLBI-funded clinical trial found that a daily hydroxyurea pill was safe and effective for young children living with sickle cell disease in sub-Saharan Africa. The NHLBI also has its sights on developing genetic therapies for

the disease, as part of a newly announced NIH collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The goal of the partnership, which also addresses HIV, is to advance possible gene-based cures to clinical trials in the United States and relevant countries in sub-Saharan Africa within the next seven to 10 years.

“A person’s health should not be limited by their geographic location, whether it’s in rural America or sub-Saharan Africa,” said Gary H. Gibbons, M.D., director of the NHLBI. “Harnessing the power of science is needed to transcend borders if we want to improve health for all.”

Energy Healing back to the Future

H

olistic wellness practitioners have used energy healing techniques for centuries.

Your body has energy centers which many ancient healers called chakras. These centers have long been recognized as internal energy healing tools.

The term chakra has its origins in India. Donna Eden states in her book “Energy Medicine” that many cultures have used internal energy cen-

ters for healing.

There are seven major chakras Crown (awareness-intelligence) Third Eye (intuition imagination), Throat (Communication), Heart (love-compassion), Solar Plexus (self-esteem, confidence), Sacral (sexuality, pleasure) and Root (physical identity, stability, grounding).

Each has its own energy frequency.

Science now acknowledges the fact that every organ in the human body has its own energy frequency which are called Subtle Organizing Energy Fields (SOEF’s). When our SOEF frequencies are in balance, we are healthy. If a vital organ such as our liver has a low SOEF frequency, this would indicate that there is a liver problem.

Nikola Tesla was able to

demonstrate the existence of Scalar Energy (also known as Zero Point Energy) in 1899.

Albert Einstein continued Tesla’s work and introduced the science of Quantum physics to the world in the 1920’s proving everything in the universe including our planet is made of moving energy.

Quantum physics has allowed science to slowly move away from the old Newtonian views of science which held that energy could be measured and quantified, and if you can’t see it you did not have to believe it was real. This belief unfortunately is still a driving force in allopathic medicine.

Yet it is predicted that in a few years the use of medications or surgery to address or suppress symptoms of disease will be replaced with energy medicine. The only time you

will go to the hospital will be to treat wounds and other injuries due to physical trauma. In time, even these types of injuries will become secondary to energy medicine devices.

In 1977 Columbia University physicist Gerald Feinberg defined a faster-than-light subatomic particle of Zero-point Energy that had form, as Tachyon energy. Further research showed that energy devices could positively influence the cellular structure of the body and could be used to heal the body of diseases.

In 1990 David Wagner developed a process called Tachyonization, which was a way to infuse objects with tachyon energy. This technology showed that energy devices could be developed that would allow the body to heal by correcting the low frequen-

cies in the SOEFs that surround our vital organs to heal from a cellular level.

Fast forward to 2020, we now have amazing energy healing therapies such as Focused Ultrasound (FUS). This procedure has been used successfully to address symptoms such as Brain tumors, Neurovascular diseases, Pituitary tumors, Neuroendocrine disorders, and Spine disorders.

Author John Grisham is a board member of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation.

he Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) is for eligible Veterans who have incurred or aggravated a serious injury in the line of duty on or before May 7, 1975 or on or after September 11, 2001. This program provides resources, education, support, a financial stipend, and health insurance (if eligible), beneficiary travel (if eligible), to caregivers of eligible Veterans.

ou’re beat down.

Tired, ready to rest, just plain done. So much racism, so many politicians doing so many things. You’re wiped, laid low with no more go, and you’re not sure you have the energy for more of this. But there’s hope for the hopeless, a lift for the fallen, and in “Rise Up” by Reverend Al Sharpton, there’s reason to keep on.

We are being tested.

It’s happening now, Sharpton says, in a way that we’ve never seen.

We’re poked by haters every day, prodded by

evildoers. The nation is at a “crossroads” and work is being done to “make America great” but not for everybody. This has to change.

Democracy, says Sharpton, is not perfect but it really is the best of all political practices. To make it work now, we need and “deserve” strong leadership that isn’t racist or homophobic, misogynistic, or against immigration or voter’s rights.

It’s what we must have to preserve democracy – and yet, he says, in the last four years, we’ve gone from a transformational leader

who embraced diversity to one that’s transactional, and does not. The former allowed a cultural shift that many in the Black community enjoyed. With the latter, we seem to have

– as are issues of climate change. And as for staying “woke,” remember that waking up means getting up, too...

Let’s start here: Reverend Al Sharpton doesn’t have very much good to say about Donald Trump.

If you’re familiar with Sharpton, you already knew this was coming – but “Rise Up” offers some background that happened between the two, and they’re great stories.

That’s a lot of what you’ll get inside this book, in fact: stories, and they mix in with Sharpton’s observations and thoughts so well that it’s easy to be lulled into the telling. No worries: like any good preacher does, he happily yanks your attention back to the pulpit, to racism, voter’s rights, and politics. True to what you’d expect, Sharpton isn’t shy, and he’ll make readers who are Black, white, and brown think, hard, about today’s issues.

Don’t be surprised to see a somewhat gentler version of Reverend Sharpton in this book – gentler, but no less fierce.
